"In Italian building market one of the reasons that often stop building contractors from not taking into consideration the possibility to recycle rubble from building is represented by the increase of costs for rubble separation. However the recycling of C&DW can also allow a decrease in disposal costs and a reduction in raw materials requirement.In this paper the results of a testing conducted on a case study through economic and technical analyses are presented.Results highlight that a wise management of demolition and disposal processes can generate a remarkable saving and that it is possible, on the other side, to achieve environmental benefits such as reduction of raw material consumption and dump life lengthening.IntroductionTwo major factors have been found to have considerably influenced the market of recycled aggregates in Europe and Italy: the EU and national regulations and environmental awareness. The market of recycled aggregate has grown in countries with limited natural resources.Waste disposal has also been one of the top EU political and environmental priorities. In the complex interaction between human activities and the environment, waste is proved to be one of the most environment-degrading products.In 1972 the European Commission introduced measures on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. In 2006, directive 2006/12/EC (European Commission) on waste was issued. It covers the scope of minimizing the waste, prevent hazardous waste, maximize reclamation, reuse, recycling and energy-recovery.No specific directive refers to management and recycling of construction and demolition wastes. However, in 1992 the European Commission listed debris among waste management priorities because of its growing amount.Only recently, effective environmental policies have been implemented in Italy, even though relevant environmental issues started rising as early as the beginning of the 1970s. In the 1980s the Government undertook the first significant measures to handle the waste management."

While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. Existing metallurgical operations can be optimized by implementing engineered bioreactor systems in the process configuration. For instance, metals can be recovered safely and economically from process and waste streams using biogenic sulfide. This paper focuses upon possible applications of high rate biotechnology in metallurgy and mining. Metal recovery from liquid streams (process bleed streams, leach water, waste streams), integrated removal of (fugitive) SO2, treatment of acid blowdown and other options will be described. Practical examples are given. A large-scale application of biotechnology at Pasminco's Budel Zink refinery is described. Here, acid plant blowdown is treated together with electrolyte magnesium bleed. Concentrated zinc sulfide (10 tpd) is produced biologically, eliminating the production of gypsum and closing the refinery sulfur cycle. Recovery of metals from solution at Kovehute Pribram in the Czech Republic is the second practical example. In this case, H2S is produced on-site for metal removal from an alkaline slag dump leachate. At the Caribou mine in New Brunswick, Canada, acid mine drainage is treated with biogenic sulfide. This plant is situated upstream of a lime neutralization plant. As a result, reusable ZnS is produced, the volume of the sludge (gypsum and hydroxides) from the lime plant is reduced by 50%, the sludge is free of heavy metals and the final effluent concentration of heavy metals is in the ppb range. In the second phase of this project, metals will be recovered from stored tailings, resulting in significant revenues.

"Nowadays, the concern with the reduction of industrial pollution has motivated researchers to found out new technologies for treatment of industrial waste. The clean technologies, as electrodialysis, are capable of treating these residues, minimizing the impacts when they are discarded directly on the environment. Membranes of SPS/HIPS, PAniCSA/SPS/HIPS, SPAN/SPS/HIPS were developed using chemical mixture method. Membranes were characterized by Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). Membranes were submitted to electrical polarization and to electrodialysis at NaCl and KCl solutions, in order to determine ionic transport through the membranes. Results were compared with commercial membranes. The average percent extraction for Na+ ions obtained by membrane was beyond 20%.IntroductionThe high environmental impact caused by the galvanoplastic industries represents today a world concern(1). In the galvanoplasty, thin metallic layers are deposited on metallic surfaces(2) through chemical methods or electrochemical process. This industrial process presents some disadvantages that limit its utilization, as the generation of toxic effluents containing concentrations of heavy metals usually above the limits allowed for his release in receiving bodies(1), the production of galvanic sludge which is considered hazardous waste and that is very difficult to treat, beyond the high consumption of water (3).Stimulated by the development of new ion-exchanged membranes with high selectivity, lower electrical resistance, and improved thermal, chemical and mechanical properties, the use of electrodialysis in the wastewater treatment has recently gained a broader interest(5). The electrodialysis (ED) is a mass separation process in which electrically charged membranes and an electrical potential difference are used to separate ionic species from an aqueous solution(5). The technique permits the recovery and the reutilization of the waste products from the industrial process, avoiding the discharge of them on the environmental (acting as clean technology)."

"Reduction of CO2 emission is necessary to remedy global warming, however, promising approaches of CO2 separation require a large amount of energy. Molten slag, which is generated as by-product of steel production, has high temperature, but its energy has not been harnessed. To recover the thermal energy from the slag and to apply to separation of CO2 are economical and environmental conscious ways. We propose a new heat recovery system, in which, molten slag is solidified continuously on water-cooled roll and the solidified slag plates are charged into counter-current heat recovery equipment. In laboratory scale experiments, heat recovery ratio of more than 30% was acchived by controlling the thickness of slag.IntroductionThe steel industry in Japan has been working on the projects of ""Environmentally Harmonized Steelmaking Process Technology Development (COURSE50)"". COURSE50 aims at developing technologies to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 30%. One of the main technologies is to capture and recover CO2 from blast furnace gas using chemical absorbents to regenerate CO2-laden chemical absorbents by separating CO2 from the absorbents. As one of the solutions, JFE Steel Corporation has been developing sensible heat recovery process from steelmaking slag. It is effective to recover and use unutilized high temperature waste heat within a steel plant as the thermal energy required."

The use of microbes for sulfide oxidation was investigated as a potential treatment option for low-grade refractory gold ores at Newmont Mining Corporation. The resulting patented technology for heap biooxidation maximizes oxidation rate by distributing the microbial population on the ore before placement on a heap. This paper presents data on global oxidation rates based on oxygen uptake in a 50-kg column for sulfidic refractory ores from the Gold Quarry mine. The oxygen uptake data was converted to a global oxidation rate. The calculated global oxidation rate was used to determine heap cycling times for Newmont?s commercial heap biooxidation facility.

This paper explores direct use of finite element analysis by CASTEM 2000 in order to determine the evolution of T-stress term for arc of pipe specimens with external surface crack. A simple method, called the stress difference method proposed by Yang (1999), is used to compute the elastic T-stress in mode I at a crack tip. The different crack geometries and length-to-thickness ratio on T-stress and stress-intensity factor (SIF) are examined. The revisited stress difference method is shown to be an accurate and robust scheme for evaluating T-stress in arc of pipe.

A survey of operating zinc smelters and refineries throughout the world has been done in conjunction with the Lead-Zinc 2000 Symposium. This survey follows the examples set by the Japanese Mining Industry Association in 1985 and 1995. Questionnaires were sent to operating zinc plants that covered feed materials, process details, energy consumption and labor requirements. The voluntary responses to the survey were tabulated. Key operating parameters including feed grade, production capacity, quality of the intermediate products and quality of the final products have been compared for both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes.

It is practically useful to separate copper from nickel at the fire refining stage of blister copper by transferring nickel in electrochemical inert silicides which are being concentrated further into the tank-house slimes. The treatment of copper melt by silicon-containing reagents is resulted in lowering the interfacial tension of the melt, its deoxidizing, selective siliconizing of in-melt nickel and forming a by-product with fluxing properties. Si-containing reagents have positive influence on results of fire and electrolytic refining, and further pulverizing of copper in plant conditions.

Nonferrous metal recycling not only provides energy saving and environmental benefits but also is a significant factor in the supply of various types of metals used in our society. Recycling plays an important role in establishing the sustainability of materials. The total amount of recycled nonferrous metals by weight accounts for less than 5% but their value is larger than 50% compared to ferrous metal recycling which consists of about half of the total metal recycling in weight. This paper describes trends and typical achievements in nonferrous metal recycling and overviews the present and future of nonferrous metal recycling technology and business in Korea.

The Onsan smelter has tried to do various activities to decrease operation costs. With several expansion projects, the Onsan smelter has aimed at not only a quantitative growth but also qualitative growth through efforts improving operations equipment and processes. Activities to reduce operation costs have been one of those efforts. In particular, the energy cost of operation has been a main target for reduction. The activities to save energy have been carried out in two ways. One is to recover and utilize waste heat as much as possible and another is to replace existing equipment and processes with more energy-efficient ones. This paper reviews recent improvements and future plans for energy saving activities at the Onsan smelter.

Nonferrous metal recycling not only provides energy saving and environmental benefits but also is a significant factor in the supply of various types of metals used in our society. The use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), a selective separations technology using specifically designed ligands, has been established as an effective process for removal of metal ions found in many hydrometallurgical, chemical, and wastewater streams. The MRT process has been proven to be highly efficient and effective for indium extraction and recovery from zinc acid leach, electrolyte, chemical process and waste streams. A high percentage of the indium is recovered in a solid product format. MRT has also proven effective for germanium extraction and recovery from similar feed streams. This paper provides the indium and germanium metal recovery flow sheets and analytical results of the metal load and recovery steps.

In its early stage of copper solvent extraction development, SX plants were designed in a series configuration and gradually the copper industry reduced staging and trains for keeping capital investments reasonably low. At a later date of its development, series parallel configuration was applied in some copper SX plants, particularly for increasing copper production at low copper tenor in pregnant leach solution. A gap between series and series parallel configuration had been observed for years. Conventional SX plants in series configuration frequently do not have the flexibility for maintaining designed or expected production level, whenever copper concentrations in pregnant leach solutions are getting low, whereas series parallel flow schemes almost require to double SX feed flows for achieving optimum results. A combined SX configuration breaks the gap and its application potentials are explained.
