"In a mining environment, high quality seismic event catalogs are often useful in interpreting local stress states and identifying areas with elevated ground control risk. Installation, operation, and maintenance of local/in-mine seismic networks, however, may be prohibitively expensive, and mine operators may not anticipate the need for seismic data until unusual mining conditions arise. If regional, generally public, seismic instrumentation could be used to reproduce the results generated by local/in-mine instrumentation to an acceptable degree of fidelity, it would be a valuable and inexpensive tool for mine planners and ground control engineers.In this study we apply subspace detection—a non-traditional seismic event detection technique—to data from a sparse, regional network. The process is employed to identify mining induced seismicity (MIS) from an underground coal district. The results are compared to a seismic event catalog produced by a local seismic array operating within the permit boundaries. Additionally, we analyze the performance of two different stations of the same sparse, regional network in identifying blasts at a surface coal mine for which we have a detailed blasting log. In both cases data from stations between 10 and 60 km away from mining activity are used. We also explore the trade-offs between the number of detections and the number of false positives, which is influenced heavily by detection thresholds and the number of stations used in the process.For the surface mine we are able to identify more than 90% of the production blasts documented in the blasting log. We also find that the detected blasts from each of the four active pits produce waveforms similar to one another. The results are not dependent on source-receiver distance, and by requiring detections to occur on both stations the number of sure false positives is reduced to zero. In the underground mining district we identify between 30% and 75% of the events detected by the local array, depending on the acceptable number of false positives and the source-receiver distance. We also find many events that were missed by the local array, showing that regional subspace detection can usefully augment traditional local catalogs. Moreover, subspace detection can provide an estimate on event location and classification using data from as little as one seismic station."

Wood cribs have been the dominant form of supplemental support in coal mining for many years. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in prop supports as a replacement for wood cribbing due to the increasing cost of mine timber and engineering advancements in prop design to improve their stability and yield capability. Prop supports generally consume less material, can be installed in less time with less labor, and provide less restriction to mine ventilation than wood crib supports. Several prop supports are now available or under development'. These include: (1) Strata Products Propsetter? Support System; (2) Heintzmann ACS and Super Prop; (3) MBK-Hydraulik MEGA prop; (4) Advanced Mining Technology Inc. (AMTI) BTS Mortar prop; (5) Dywidag Coal Post; (6) Western Support Systems YIPPI support; and (7) "The Can" support by Burrell Mining Products. A comparison of the performance and cost of these support systems to wood cribs is made to provide mine operators with information needed to assess their application potential. Examples of current underground installations are discussed. Included in this assessment are full scale tests of these supports conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Mine Roof Simulator.

Current research in longwall mining in CSIRO Exploration & Mining is focused within five major projects and several minor projects. The major projects are: 1 3D Aspects of Longwall Geomechanics. This was reported to the conference last year and a final report will be available by mid-2001. 2 Mine Gas Control. This just completed project centred on Dartbrook Colliery which has a longwall gas make of more than 8 cubic metres per second. 3 Rapid Roadway Development This includes the construction of an autonomous conveying and bolting module (ACBM) that sits between the miner and haulage system. 4 Top Coal Caving In conjunction with the YanKuang group in China, CSIRO and the University of NSW are conducting a prefeasibility study of the Top Coal Caving method in Australian conditions. 5 Longwall Automation. In partnership with the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE), the CSIRO has conducted a scoping study on this issue and will commence an initial three-year demonstration project in July this year. This paper describes these protects in more detail with particular focus on the last three in the above list.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomographic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First¬arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

The main objective of the research described in the paper was to determine the causes of falls of roof in South African coal mines. The south African Colliery Manager's Association and the members of the South African National Institute of Rock Engineering (SANIRE) who are employed by coal mines lent full support to the work. Fifteen major roof falls were investigated in detail and their causes established. This data was supplemented by mapping a large number of roof falls on four coal mines in less detail. The total number of recorded roof falls was 182. The data bank simulated the data bank of roof falls that resulted in fatalities in terms of the total number of falls recorded and the thickness distribution of the collapses. It was found that the causes of the falls differed for different thickness ranges of roof falls, The thin falls, classified as "Skin falls", which accounted for approximately 70% of all fatalities, were predominantly caused by ineffective joint support and excessive bolt spacing. Ineffective joint support was found to be a dominant cause of roof falls for all thickness ranges, while the influence of excessive bolt spacing diminished with increasing fall thickness. However, it remained a significant cause of roof falls even for the major falls. Burnt coal, dykes, bad mining practice, weathering and inferior materials were found to be minor causes, but nonetheless contributed to the falls. Horizontal stress was a minor cause, with increasing contribution for thicker falls. It was also found that the indicators of horizontal stress coincided with areas of reduced roof rock strength. In general, roof falls occurred in areas where the roof rock was found to be less competent in terms of rock mass rating systems. It was concluded that the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed by NIOSH in the USA held promise for application in South Africa and should be investigated further.

Many longwall panels in China are laid out along the dip direction such that the direction of longwall retreat mining is along the strike direction of coal seams. Downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams refers to those that are laid out in a non-uniformly developed fold structure where the seam is not only steeply dipping, but also highly undulated along the strike direction, causing longwall mining extremely difficult because it has to deal with large dip angles that vary both in the mining and faceline directions. Obviously, the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply dipping seams have unique patterns that are very much different from those cases of mining the flat or gently inclined coal seams. The effects of those unique patterns presented a big challenge to production and safety. Almost all previous and current researches on ground control have been concentrated on issues related to the flat and gently inclined coal seams. Conversely, research on steeply inclined coal seams, especially those with large angle variation both along the seam dip and strike directions is almost none. Therefore, it is very important to initiate a study to better understand the characteristics of mine pressure and overburden strata movement for this special type of geological condition. The objective of this paper is to monitor and analyze the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams, the angle of which varies greatly along both the seam dip and strike directions. The measured data has conclusively demonstrated that the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams are different from those for the flat and gently inclined coal seams. The large downward angles of coal seam undulation along the strike (mining) direction can obviously affect the roof movement and reduce strata pressure. Study in this research showed that appropriately increasing the rate of mining (or face advance) is positive to roof control.

"Over the last five years, the authors have compiled a database of Short Encapsulation Pull Test (SEPT) evaluations from Interior Basin (Basin) coal mines. Typically, SEPT data are analyzed to obtain peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation designated as the ""Grip Factor,"" or GF. In a previous paper, ""An Analysis of Short Encapsulation Bolt Pull Test (SEPT) Data From Interior Basin Coal Mines,"" authors analyzed tangent value of the load-displacement curve as Anchorage Stiffness at 50% (AS-50) of the peak load, or GF value, to assess reinforcement potential of an installed bolt system. This paper attempts to correlate the secant AS VALUES (of SEPT on 6 ft (1.8 m) long installed bolts at a lower load of about four tons from several different mines in the Basin with their MSHA-approved primary support requirements. Since the current regulatory environment requires plan changes dynamically to ensure that roof falls are minimized, the authors hypothesize that the practiced roof control plan must meet the minimum requirement of adequately supporting immediate roof strata. The analyses are based on 181 SEPT studies performed by Minova professionals. Analyses indicate a macrolevel correlation for both roof support density and roof support cost that may have the potential to be used by mine operators to compare their performance with other mines in the area. Limitations of the analyses include ignoring mining depth, mining height and required secondary supports as part of the requirements for a roof control plan. The authors recommend additional analyses to develop this concept further to develop guidelines that can be confidently used by coal companies.INTRODUCTIONPartially- and fully-grouted bolts are extensively used in coal mines for roof support as part of MSHA-approved roof control plans. Since grouted bolts have a larger area of contact with the rock, they can develop much greater anchorage capacity than conventional expansion shell (point-anchored) bolts. Load transfer characteristics and interaction mechanics between steel rebar, grout and rock mass around the bolt hole for grouted bolts are generally assessed in the laboratory or field though short-encapsulation pull tests (SEPT), which have been extensively researched by Aziz and Jalalifar (2005), Aziz (2004a), Serbousek and Signer (1987), Signer (1990), and Mark et al. (2002), among others. In a SEPT, about 12 in. (30 cm) of bolt length is typically encapsulated in resin and a pull test is performed to collect load-displacement data prior to failure and, in some cases, post-failure. A typical load-displacement data set for a bolt is shown in Figure 1. SEPT characteristics are designated by peak load carrying capacity, or grip factor, which is the peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation. SEPT is routinely used to assess anchorage performance characteristics of different lithologies overlying a coal seam to identify type of bolt, bolt diameter, length and spacing across and along an excavation. Anchorage stiffness, or AS, at any load may also be calculated as the tangent or secant value of the slope of the load displacement curve at a particular load level. Anchorage Stiffness characteristics of bolts from SEPT data have typically not been considered in any depth until recently (Chugh et al., 2014; Chugh et al., 2015)."

"Tailgate entries in U.S. longwalls can be subjected to high loads and deformations. Therefore, tailgate entries are generally supported with varying types and amounts of standing support. However, even with standing support, roof falls and blockages can occur in the tailgate when the support system is not properly designed. Safe and efficient operation of a longwall face requires the selection of the appropriate type and amount of standing support. Because of the importance of maintaining a safe and functional tailgate entry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. Using the ground reaction curve for design requires that the ground and support interaction be quantified. This can be accomplished by the installation and analysis of data from instrumented field sites. Although necessary, the field results cannot develop the complete ground reaction curve. Numerical models, calibrated to the field results, are used to establish the complete ground reaction curve. In the present study, data was obtained and evaluated to establish points for calibration of the ground reaction curve for two western longwall operations.One test site, Mine A, was located at a depth of 1,550 ft. At this site, the floor consisted of siltstone, while the roof was an interbedded siltstone and sandstone. Because of the depth, a double row of22-in diameter CANs1 were installed to support the tailgate. Both the first and second longwall panels have mined past the instrumented site.The second site in Mine B is at a depth of only 760 ft. The floor at this mine consists of a weak shale/mudstone and the roof consists of thick, top coal overlain by weak shales. At this site, a double row of pumpable cementitious cribs was installed. The second test site has only been subjected to side abutment loading from first panel longwall mining.The measurements indicate that the support at both mines was heavily loaded when subjected to the side abutment loading from first panel mining. At the deeper site, the support began to yield when the face was more than 300 ft outby during second panel mining. In comparison to results from previous test sites in the Pittsburgh Seam and Illinois Basin, the amount of support loading and roof-to-floor convergence was an order of magnitude higher at the western sites. This has resulted in a significant difference in the position and shape of the ground reaction curves."

"The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open-cut highwall. In response to this movement, Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining and in direct contrast with typical longwall subsidence behaviour.This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established, as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the ICGCM and challenge the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.BACKGROUNDThe mining of longwalls under or adjacent to large voids (e.g., stream valleys, escarpments, or cliffs) is commonly associated with heavily vegetated or steep surface areas. In areas of extreme topographic variance, access to traditional survey pegs and stations or even new radar or laser technologies is limited. In addition, seldom have the longwall layouts aligned themselves parallel or perpendicular to the surface feature, making interpretation of any available surface movement data more complicated.The punch longwall layout (Figure 1) is also quite uncommon (only undertaken at a small number of longwall mines in Australia) but creates the perfect configuration to enable a somewhat controlled study of the effect of longwall subsidence on a steeply dipping surface feature (an un-vegetated, evenly excavated open-cut highwall). The relatively recently developed radar and laser scanning technology has also enabled near continuous, real-time, sub-millimetre monitoring of a full 500m wide x 100m high highwall. Because the punch longwall enables access and a clear view, the technology could be easily deployed as compared to the highly vegetated and variable topography of stream valleys."

The design of support for underground excavations is a complex process in which the interaction between supports and the rock mass must be evaluated. The strength reduction method (SRM) is useful because it provides a stability factor of the supported excavation that can easily be compared between support alternatives. The method is based on numerical model analysis where the stability factor is determined by reducing the rock mass strength until collapse is indicated in the model. This paper presents the results of validation studies that were conducted using the FLAC3D stress analysis software to compare SRMcalculated stability factors to the empirically based Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and the Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS). The objective was to determine whether the SRM, with its basis in mechanics, would predict similar outcomes as the fundamentally different ARBS and CMRR methods with their basis in empirical observations. A total of 450 different scenarios were evaluated in which the geology, horizontal stress, depth of cover, entry width, support spacing, and support length were varied. The results showed that the SRM-calculated stability factors were able to satisfactorily capture both the ?weak bed? and ?strong bed? adjustments in the CMRR. The SRM results were found to be well correlated to the ARBS stability factors for the 450 cases considered. Further analysis showed that the SRM accurately captures the effect of bolt length, depth of cover, and entry width on the overall stability of an entry.

The use of wooden supports, supplementary to the primary method of roof control using roof bolts in mines, consumes over 3 million cubic meters of hardwood in the U.S. annually. These supports arc primarily used in the form of cribs and posts. Along with a rapid depletion of high quality timber resources, supplies fluctuate seasonally, costs are escalating rapidly, and product quality is highly variable. Environmental considerations of global climate change put additional pressure on deforestation for utilization of timber for artificial supports. On the other hand, management of coal combustion byproducts (GCBs) from power plants has become a major issue to maintaining a healthy coal industry. The USA currently produces over 100 million tons of CCBs annually and the average cost for their management in the US is about $20/ton. This cost is expected to escalate rapidly with tougher environmental regulations. The principal author has been directing research, development, and demonstration studies for CCBs-based artificial supports and lightweight structural materials in mines for the past seven years and has made significant progress toward commercially viable products. More specifically, first and second generation crib elements and post elements have been developed, characterized analytically, and demonstrated in the field. It is estimated that about 2.5 x 10" tons of fly ash could be utilized for artificial supports in U.S coal mines and this would double if these materials were utilized in non-coal mines as well. The author believes that CCBs-based artificial supports have the potential to replace wooden supports and blocks with better performance and cost competitiveness while managing CCBs in an environmentally sound manner. This paper focuses on the development and field demonstration of CCBs-based artificial supports for use in underground mines, and its pilot scale fabrication facility. Recent analysis results on engineering performance evaluation of the developed crib under various loading conditions using finite element method are presented. The following comments highlight the developments: I ). Engineered artificial supports, crib and post elements, using CCBs as a major constituent, have significant potential for application in mines because their structural performance is significantly better than wooden cribs counterparts. 21. Engineered crib elements provide about 50% larger area for air-flow than a conventional wooden crib. 3). Engineered crib elements are not flammable. 4). Each engineered crib element utilizes about 10 kg of fly ash, about 40 % of the weight of crib element- Therefore, a typical crib 2.0 m high utilizes about 200 kg of fly ash. 5). Each 16.5 cm diameter engineered post utilizes 50 kg of fly ash. 6). Assuming 3.0 million cu. meter of wood consumed for post and crib support systems, it is estimated that about 4 - 5 million tons of fly ash may be utilized for supports fabrication in the USA. 7). An engineered post has excellent post-failure characteristics similar to wood. In addition, the engineered post also has excellent loading and unloading characteristics close to the yield point of about 75% of the ultimate load carrying capacity.

BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal operates Dendrobium Mine in an area 10-20km west-northwest of Wollongong in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales, Australia. The mine recently completed longwall mining in Area 3A adjacent to an overhanging rock feature known as Sandy Creek Waterfall, which had been identified as a significant, and potentially sensitive natural surface feature of the environment. This waterfall lies within the Sydney drinking water catchment area, in a surface terrain of variable topography where non-conventional subsidence behaviour such as valley closure, and far-field horizontal movements are known to occur, over and above conventional subsidence responses to mining. As a part of the conditions of approval to mine, Illawarra Coal undertook to protect the waterfall and the section of Sandy Creek immediately upstream of the waterfall from the effects of longwall mining using an innovative management process and an array of very high resolution monitoring systems. This paper outlines the type of non-conventional subsidence effects that can occur; the range of different monitoring regimes adopted in response to such effects in order to develop an understanding of the valley closure phenomenon in proximity to the waterfall and provide suitable early warning data. The paper also describes the management processes that were adopted, incorporating the use of these monitoring regimes in order to successfully protect the waterfall from the valley closure effects of mining four adjacent longwall panels in close proximity to the waterfall while continuing to maximise recovery of the coal resource in the area. The management structure adopted involved a technical committee, a steering committee, and an external independent reviewer. The technical committee was responsible for design of the monitoring systems, interpretation of the results, and making timely recommendations to the company steering committee who were then able to make informed decisions on when to cease mining each adjacent panel. The steering committee comprised Illawarra Coal management and technical personnel. Although the steering committee took advice from the technical committee, all decisions relating to mining were made by the steering committee. An external reviewer was engaged by the steering committee at the end of each longwall panel to review the results, interpretation and management decisions. This management structure was effective in successfully protecting the very sensitive structure of Sandy Creek Waterfall from potential impacts of nearby mining in the midst of active ongoing natural erosion processes.

A measurement-based ground control management system, commonly employed in coal mines, has been successfully implemented in a UK potash mine operating at a depth of over 800 m. This system includes the routine deployment of telltales in roadways throughout the mine to mitigate against the risk of large-scale roof falls and the deployment of detailed ?design monitoring? instrumentation for ongoing design verification. The routine monitoring systems used in coal mines have not been, to date, commonly applied in potash mines, despite the similar, variable weak geology and associated ground control hazards. Monitoring information from the site indicates that telltales can be deployed to monitor roof conditions, with action levels based on differential rates of strain, as opposed to absolute movement.

The Pennsylvania Joint Coal and Gas Committee Gas Well Pillar Study of 1956 is the bases for well protection pillar design in the US and many other countries. An update was necessary because the well construction common to the gas and coal industries as well as mine configurations, mine depth, and extraction thickness have changed considerably since 1956. As initially envisioned the update would involve a similar empirical study that formed the basis of the initial investigation. However, there are no records of any gas or oil well failures related to coal mining since 1956 when mines followed the initial recommendation, making an empirical study problematic. Thus, the study had to be more analytical, which in return required at least some fundamental research into the behavior of the interaction of coal mining and oil and gas wells. A call to industry about research they have undertaken resulted in obtaining excellent research on the subject from three companies; Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., CONSOL Energy Inc., and Range Resources. These research projects were initially undertaken for internal use and not previously published. John T. Boyd Company reanalyzed these studies and determined how their results would affect protective pillar designs. These research projects pointed to the importance of horizontal movement and shear caused by subsidence and the strength of pillars and their foundations. The importance of geology is important in understanding horizontal shear, ground movement, and floor strength. The failure modes of casing and pipe needed to be understood so the threshold of these movements and stresses could be determined.

A diverse range of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Despite their wide spread use, the factors that affect the performance a rockbolt is not fully understood. The laboratory-scale rockbolt test facility at the UNSW Mining Research Centre is being used to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of rockbolts leading to an improvement in ground support. A test program investigated the nature of load transfer between a fully encapsulated rockbolt and the surrounding rock mass. It was found that with all other factors held constant, there were differences in the behaviour of load transfer depending on the method of loading. The typical pull-out arrangement as used in most field test work resulted in a different load transfer function to that observed when the load on the rockbolt was induced through bed separation.

"China is a major coal producer and consumer. It is necessary to mine the steeply pitching coal seams due to development of the coal industry to meet the increasing needs for coal. Flexible shield supports mining is a safe and efficient mining method for steeply pitching coal seam that was first applied in HuaiNan mining area in the 1970s. The coal seams are steeply pitching in DaAnShan Colliery, so mining is mainly done by the flexible shield supports method. The roadway lay-out and extraction technology are researched in order to improve the safety, yield and work efficiency in the flexible shield supports working face. Optimization of the flexible shield supports mining method is discussed. The main optimization aspects are as follows: (1) the angle of working face and mining track roadways are increased from 23° to 28°, and (2) the technology and parameters of coal breaking are optimized. Applicable conditions, as well as advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. Finally, a comparison is made of the two different flexible shield supports mining methods, namely ""bench blasting . technology"" and ""piecewise blasting technology"".INTRODUCTIONChina is the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world and relies heavily on coal for energy production. At present, Chinese production is about 42% of the worldwide production, and coal has accounted for 76% of primary energy production. Coal plays a dominant role in the structure of energy production and consumption, which is fuel and an important industrial raw material but it is non-renewable. In recent years, the high inclined seams (35°< angle of coal seam < 45°) and steeply pitching coal seams (angle of coal seam >45°) have drawn increasing attention in the mining sector along with the growth of coal mining. There are two reasons. First, there are abundant reserves of high inclined and steeply pitching coal seams in China, which account for 15- 20% of total reserves (Xie, Dong-hai, 2007). Highly inclined and the steeply pitching coal seams are mined in more than 50% of the western mining provinces such as Sichuan, ChongQing, YunNan, GuiZhou, XinJiang, GanSu, NingXia, etc. As the mining of mineral resources continues west in the 21st century, the study of coal mining in high inclined seams and steeply pitching coal seams will be of great importance. Secondly, better quality coal has become scarcer in the eastern mining areas after years of exploitation, so steeply pitching seam mmmg is growing more prevalent. In short, carrying out research on steeply pitching seam mining technology plays an important role in sustaining the development of the Chinese coal industry."

"Longwall bituminous coal mining has been practiced in Pennsylvania since the 1970""s. Hundreds of longwall panels have been mined during the last 40 years but only 24 have actually undermined Pennsylvania's Interstate Highway System. The impact to interstate highways are summarized in this paper and the factors that influence the magnitude of these impacts are examined.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 30 years, interstate highways in Pennsylvania have been undermined by portions of 21 bituminous coal mine longwall panels. From 2003 to 2008, three of the panel were extracted by the Emerald Mine and six by the Cumberland Mine both in Greene County and both owned by Alpha Resources. Previous assessments of longwall mining under Pennsylvania’s interstates have identified impacts to the highways but no danger to public safety. In general the magnitude and extent of impacts during the recent undermining of Interstate 79 or 179 appears to be similar as those identified in previous studies. The nine longwall panels are among some of the widest in the U.S. They are supercritical in character with overburdens ranging from greater than 152 m (500 ft) to less than 305 m (1,000 ft).The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) requested that the University of Pittsburgh summarize observations collected by their staff during the recent undermining of 179. Observations and photographs of impacts to the highway were made by PA DEP staff and entered into reports prepared by California District Mining Office (COMO) staff and statements written into the Bituminous Underground Mining Information System (BUMIS) database. In addition to the observations by the PA DEP, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) conducted a series of detailed land surveys along portions of the highway undermined from 2003 to 2008. "This paper presents results from a recent study conducted to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced stresses and deformations on the mechanical integrity of shale gas wells drilled over a longwall abutment pillar. The primary objective is to demonstrate that a properly constructed gas well in a standard longwall mining abutment pillar can maintain mechanical integrity during and after mining operations. Successful designs would allow for the safe recovery of both coal and gas reserves. Major elements of this comprehensive study include: (1) modeling of rock movements to predict impacts on gas wells, (2) measurements of actual rock movements at the surface and in the subsurface, (3) measurements of actual impacts on test wells designed similarly to real shale gas wells, ( 4) comparison of modeling results to actual rock movements to validate the model, and (5) employing the validated models to evaluate various casing and cementing designs to minimize casing deformations and absorb longwall-induced strains along the intermediate and production casings.A study site was selected over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under about 600 feet of cover. Four test wells and four monitoring wells were drilled and installed over an abutment pillar with 125-ft by 275-ft centers. The four test wells were drilled to a depth of 642 ft, or 42 ft below the Pittsburgh seam, and were designed like a real shale gas well, except that only three casings (namely the surface, water protection and coal protection casings) were installed in each well. Casing steel grades, wellbore diameters and annular spaces were purposely varied in each of the four test wells to evaluate the effect of different well designs. The four monitoring wells - one vertical extensometer and three in-place inclinometers (IPI) - were drilled to different depths to measure the vertical settlement and horizontal displacements as a result of longwall mining on both sides of the abutment pillar. In addition to the test wells and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-ft-wide longwall panels on the south and north sides of the abutment pillar mined by."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is conducting research to provide alternatives for traditional secondary support methods. These cost-saving methods are proving to afford safer installation, improve entry stability, eradicate material-handling injuries associated with crib supports, and enhance ventilation. In cooperation with Mountain Coal Company, the USBM replaced timber cribbing with high- strength cable supports to provide stability in a gate road that was used for two longwall panels. The support design consisted of 2.1-m (7-ft) full-column resin-grouted bolts and 4.8-m- (16-ft-) long high-strength resin-grouted cable supports. Three support concepts were evaluated: passive, stiff, and tensioned systems. Cable loading and roof deformations were monitored to evaluate the behavior of the immediate and main roofs during panel extraction. The stress and loading histories for both panels and the abutment and yield pillars were monitored to assist in evaluating the stress transfer and pillar performance in conjunction with the roof behavior. The test results indicated that resin- grouted cable support systems successfully maintained the immediate and main roofs during the extraction of two longwall panels. This paper describes the theory, application, and advantages of resin-grouted cable supports and presents the mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

Room and pillar mining under shallow depth is usually conducted with a high extraction ratio, which leaves small pillars with a low safety factor in some old workings in abandoned mines. Pillar sloughage, squeezing or even collapse may have occurred in those old workings with small pillars, either at the time of mining or later. The conditions of the pillars in abandoned mines can affect mining above them. Subsidence fractures and abutment pressure are indications of multi-seam interaction caused by squeezing or collapse of small pillars. To mine over areas with potentially unstable small pillars, the panel layout in the upper seam should be such that multi-seam interaction can be minimized and proper roof and rib support should be installed in the influence zones. This case study presents an example of multi-seam mining above small pillars under a shallow depth of cover. Though the interburden is relatively thick and competent, interaction is still present over the influence zones. Pillar stability and multi-seam interaction analysis, numerical modeling and in-situ monitoring are presented to demonstrate how the upper seam can be mined safely over the small pillars.
