The behaviour of grouted cable bolts used for rock reinforcement as a means of ground control in hard rock mining is investigated. The study utilizes an analytical model which is based on the variational principle to calculate the shear bond stress distribution along the embedded length of cable bolt. In this paper, a comprehensive parametric study which covers both geometric and mechanical design parameters involved is presented. Special emphasis is placed on studying the characteristics of the grout model represented by Winkler springs. This involved varying the maximum shear strength of the grout, its residual strength and the slip occurring between the cable and the borehole wall.

Two existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Gals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These were applied to several field measured subsidence pro¬files over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

At any given lime, the tidal force subjects massive regions to a spatially uniform load. The deformation of any large structure due to these forces is proportional to the elastic properties of the structure. In this aspect, the tidal force applies a load in a manner similar to that of a large-scale testing machine. Any anomalies in the measured tidal response must reflect alterations in the average elastic response of the massive structure. In the present work, tidal tilt measurements obtained in the wall of a large dam are used to infer changes in the response of the dam to applied loads. In particular, it is found that the dam response has changed by approximately 13 percent, on average, for two monitoring periods separated by 5 years. It is possible that these changes were produced by the different volumes of water in the dam for the monitoring periods. The tidal measurement technique can also be applied to monitor changes in the average structural response of large underground and surface masses relevant to coal and metal mines.

With a view to producing increased target output every year, Indian coal mining industry is fast moving towards mechanisation but the present approach of mechanisation suffers from lack of standardisation, mainly due to nonavailability of the cutting data for various machine/rock combinations. The coal seams of the country are relatively hard in nature and the coaling machines are reported to be affecting production and productivity of the coal mine and the very trend of mechanisation. This paper presents the result of extensive study performed to visualise the cutting characteristics of coal seams of compressive strength ranging from 20 MPa to 65 MPa. In a specially designed drag bit type coal plough rig, continuous recording of cutting forces was done with the help of a microprocessor based data logger and the specific energy of cuttability was evaluated at different depth of cut and speed of cutting. The geomechanical properties such as compressive strength, orientation and frequency of cleats etc. and different indices of coal seams were measured in the laboratory and field and relationship was developed for easy determination of specific energy.

Gob pressure measurements were made in a Western U. S. coal mine as part of a long-term program to evaluate cave progress and to determine the influence of geological discontinuities on caving conditions, load transfer, and resulting instabilities. Gloetzl cells were selected for the measurements due to their simple, robust construction and a history of being able to monitor pressures in a broken medium. A methodology was developed for the successful installation and protection of the cells and hydraulic lines in the gob as the face retreated. The measurement indicated a cave progress controlled by the frequency of, major faults. The pressure-mining progress profile was compared to those observed in other parts of the world. It was concluded that the significant differences in profiles was caused by the thick-bedded strata, the existence of high lateral stresses and the spacing between faults. Recommendations are given for future applications of Gloetzl cells for gob pressure measurements.

Maltby Colliery, operated by RJB Mining (UK) Ltd is successfully mining the Parkgate seam in Yorkshire at a depth of 1000m using longwall retreat. Extraction in the Parkgate seam is influenced by interaction from previous workings in the Swallow Wood Seam 160m above. The paper describes in-situ stress measurements and simple gate road convergence measurements carried out to assess the extent of the interactive influence. The stress measurements, obtained using the stress relief overcore technique, were carried out from a maingate development roadway in an area where the stress redistribution under an overlying pillar and adjacent panel goat could be measured. The measured vertical stress distribution confirmed a significant interactive influence with high imposed vertical stresses under the overlying panel edges. Simple roadway convergence monitoring stations established in the gateroads of a retreating panel and in the development gateroads of the adjacent panel, confirmed higher rates of roadway deformation relating to overlying panel edges and pillars, particularly in the areas where a vertical stress window developed during panel retreat. In addition to highlighting a close relationship between closure rate and the measured vertical stresses, the convergence monitoring proved valuable in establishing characteristic deformation behaviour under specific interactive influences and also in defining the optimum location, extent and time of installation u£ additional roadway support and reinforcement. The information from the measurement programme has enabled the Mine Management to gain a better understanding of the interactive influences on roadway behaviour and was instrumental in designing the layout of panels in an area of the North East district of the mine where previous experience had indicated the combined influence of high interactive stresses and weak roof lithology resulted in difficult strata conditions both at development and on panel retreat. The planned location of panels and gateroads took into account both mining operational considerations and the need to avoid potentially high risk interaction zones as highlighted from analysis of the monitoring results. To obtain additional data on parameters influencing roadway deformation, extended roadway convergence monitoring has been established.

Spontaneous combustion hazard of loose coal in the top-coal caving region of entry affects the safety of the entry and top- caving longwall face seriously. In this paper, by combining on- site temperature tests with lab tests and numerical simulation, the characteristics of microcirculation close to the top-coal caving region are analyzed. A model for the temperature fields of the microcirculation in loose coal is presented. Based on this model, the temperature distribution and possible self-ignition region can be predicted. Further, the heat and mass transfers in microcirculation are studied. Finally, the mechanism of oxygenation during the spontaneous combustion of microcirculation in loose coal of the top-coal caving region of entries is put forward. The research results in this papa may provide ideas for the prevention and putting out of the fire caused by spontaneous combustion in the caving zone.

The integrity factor approach was developed by the Bureau of nines to assess the stability of mine pillars and has been applied primarily to longwall chain pillars. Recently this approach was applied to a room-and-pillar mine in the Illinois Coal Basin. A special configuration of hydraulic borehole pressure cells was installed in a pillar to determine the in situ strength-and- stress relationship of the coal pillar and to verify the applicability of the integrity factor approach. Results indicate that the integrity factor approach is applicable to the assessment of pillar st6b:lity and nay bs a realistic and effective approach for room-and-pillar mine design.

The United States Coal Mining Indus- try had the opportunity to greatly improve their roof control techniques during the nineteen seventies by the use of fully grouted resin roof bolts. This new tool was first approved for underground coal mines by M.S.H.A. ten years ago and during the next decade has been perfected to meet many problems previously thought to be unsolveable. The initial approved cartridge was very similar to the ones used in Europe in the nineteen sixties and since then has undergone a great deal of modification for our mines. These refinements in cartridge construction have been obtained by the close cooperation of resin manufacturers with mining personnel in perfecting pro- ducts customized to particular needs. This type of continuing program naturally necessitates a responsibility upon the resin anchor manufacturer to maintain a competant technical department. These roof control technicians by constant exposure to many of the most demanding underground problems, have developed through the years into leaders in successful applications. Today, Celtite has over twenty technically trained underground technicians with an accumulation of over one hundred years experience in resin anchors. Our documented technical reports are in excess of five thousand, involving over six hundred mines representing every major coal mining area in most mineable seams. This department has been the implement used to work with our research and development people in perfecting a continual line of improved resin anchors. This program has been a significant factor in leading the resin anchor industry into a position where approximately one third of the 1980 under- ground coal production used the fully grouted system. However, as gratifying as this accomplishment is, our experience has lead us to believe that there is an additional demand for a roof control system capable of combining the mechanical bolts ability to apply tension with resins proven superiority in anchoring. A significant number mines visited during the last decade had problems that we believed could be better answered by applying tension rather than the fully grouted approach. In most in- stances, their current mechanical installations were doing an adequate job until anchor slippage occured. Fully grouted systems solved this bleed-off problem. However, an acceptable number of falls still occured. In these some- what unique areas which we believe may amount to as much as fifteen percent of the total bolt installations, the need for improved anchors was a necessity. In developing this program we listed the ultimate requirements necessary for both the bolt and the anchor. These are for the bolt: A. Have one end manufactured so it can be grouted to the mine roof with polyester resin, obtaining a variable length from 12" to 36". B. Have a mechanism which allows the operator to tension the roof from zero to 10,000 psi. This mechanism should indicate if the roof is in compression and the bolt in tension. C. Have a mechanism which allows the operator to thoroughly mix the resin. D. The head of the bolt should not extend below the roof line any more than a normal mechanical bolt. E. Not require any extra tools for installation. F. Be bendable for use in low seam coal. G. Be durable and inexpensive. The ultimate point anchor resin should have the following characteristics: A. Have a mix and gel cycle which would compete with a mechanical bolt for speed of installation. B. Have a pull out strength in excess of a normal 5/8" mechanical bolt.

"Over the past decade, ground falls have resulted in five fatalities, representing over 40% of all fatalities occurring in underground stone mines in the United States. In conjunction with recent high-profile pillar collapses, the need for further ground control research in the nation’s stone mines is evident. Ground conditions are growing more difficult. Therefore, this research is focused on deep cover, steeply dipping, and multi-level underground nonmetal mines. The objective of this paper is to introduce a geomechanical study of pillar development in a steeply dipping limestone deposit. To accomplish this, a numerical model was developed using input from modified laboratory test data and in situ stress measurements provided by the mine to simulate the development of a pillar under these conditions. The model was then verified against field observations and stress mapping. The calibrated model was then used to calculate the estimated stresses in the pillar and immediate roof as development progresses around an instrumented pillar.INTRODUCTIONGround falls represent a significant hazard in the nation’s underground stone mines. In response to recent large-scale pillar collapses, as well as stakeholder interactions, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are currently conducting detailed investigations into the complex loading conditions at mines operating in challenging operational environments. These include deep-cover, steeply dipping, and multi-level mines where there is the potential for an increased risk of ground failure. The Pleasant Gap Mine, shown in Figure 1, operates in the Valentine Formation, which is typically light grey, extremely fine-grained limestone, and approximately 21.3 m (70 ft.) thick. The Centre Hall Formation makes up the immediate and main roof members and is approximately 9.1 m (30 ft.) thick, consisting of medium-dark-gray limestone (Murphy et al., 2018). Situated in a syncline, the top of the Valentine Formation dips at approximately 19° with a strike of approximately N54E in the area of interest (see Figure 2)."

Clusters of underground openings were developed around the shaft bottom of Tangshan Mine. They were deep and located in soft rock strata. After development, those openings have been subjected to considerable deformation and damages. A combined supporting method including grouting and bolting, shotcrete lining and brickwork was used. This paper analyzing the theories on which this supporting method was based. A new theory called "Disturbed Creep" was developed for deformation prediction of openings surrounded by strata subjected to stresses close to limiting or failure strength. There are many methods developed for measuring the crustal stress in China. Among them only two methods have been adopted in practice, i.e., overcoring method (for which the sensors include: Piezo-magnetic stress gauge, steel-ring strain cell, 3-dimensional hollow-inclusion stress ,gauge, and Leeman's-like stress gauge) and hydraulic fracturing method. For the former method, one of those sensors is installed in a borehole, 36 mm in diameter, then prestressed, and finally overcored with a drill bit of 130 mm in diameter. After that the deformation of the borehole wall is measured, from which the in-situ stresses are determined. In order to avoid the errors resulting from the difference in elastic modulus for various kinds of rocks as well as from the installment of the cells, we have developed a technique to calibrate the sensor on-spot using a confining pressure calibrator and produced a very good result. For the later method, the measurements are achieved by isolating a certain section of a borehole and then injecting water to pressurize it till a tensile break is induced. It is identical to the typical technology used internationally. For many years, through field observations and a large number of laboratory experiments, we believe that the most efficient way of stress measurement for engineering purposes is the overcoring method using Piezo-magnetic stress gauge. It is characterized by stable and reliable measurement values, high accuracy and high adaptability. Taking the measurements in the intact rock mass as an example, the measured stress magnitudes are within accuracies of 8% and the errors in orientation are about 5 degrees. It can even be used perfectly in deep water. Up to now, we have performed in-situ stress measurements in more than 70 sites and obtain more than one thousand sets of data. The deepest depth used in the overcoring method is 80 m in vertical borehole and 780 m in tunnels.

"In this paper, the mining experience and challenges for the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam are introduced. The longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence (up to 2 feet), accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded.Different underground instruments, such as a roof scope, de-gas drill, tell-tale, laser meter, and Borehole Pressure Cell (BPC), were employed to explore the roof geology and to monitor the entry convergence and the stress changes in the pillar. In addition, the impact of other geologic factors, such as large overburden depth, laminated sandstone roof geology, soft floor, and large headgate equipment, were also analyzed. Subsequently, geotechnical solutions were provided to avoid or mitigate the impact of these challenging geologic factors.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that high horizontal stress will affect the stability of roof, floor, and ribs within underground mines. In general, the headgate entries will experience stress concentration for the right-handed longwall face. On the contrary, the stress concentration will be in the tailgate entries for the left-handed longwall face (Hasenfus and Su, 2006). Without the stress shadow, the stress concentration in the headgate for the first longwall panel may be more significant (Figure 1).A mine in the CONSOL Pennsylvania Operation was extracting the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam, which created high horizontal stress concentrations at the longwall headgate. Because of concern over soft wet floor within the syncline, floor coal had been left in place on development. Early on, upon retreat, the longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence, accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The floor heave was exacerbated by the presence of floor coal, which buckled upward near the center of the beltline. Roof movement was occasionally aggravated by laminated roof conditions, but was kept in check by aggressive supplemental support including cable bolts, yielding props, cribbing, and roof mesh. Rib bolting and rib mesh helped to further maintain the entryway stability by keeping sloughage at a minimum. Nevertheless, despite the heavy support, headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded."

4 and 6 point timber chock constructions are used extensively on both a systematic and spot basis by Australian longwall operators to support tailgate roadways. In 1996, the School of Mining Engineering at UNSW published design and performance criteria for timber chocks constructed from Australian hardwoods. The research was funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). In 1997, ACARP awarded funding for a stage 2 testing program. This testing focussed on examining the effect of using thinner timber elements in chock constructions to improve OH&S and comparing the full-scale performance of traditional 4 point chocks to Link-n-Lock constructions. It was established that chocks constructed from thinner elements have failure loads much less than thicker elements. However up to the failure loads of the thinner elements there was no significant difference in the response to convergence of chocks constructed from 25, 50 or 100mm thick elements. Chocks constructed from 150mm thick elements have a similar ultimate strength to the 100mm thick elements. However, they have a significantly lower resistance to load, thereby permitting more convergence to occur. There is more potential for chocks comprised of thin elements to be constructed 'out of plumb' and so suffer eccentric loading. The full scale testing program established that at any given level of convergence up to 10% strain, the timber in a Link-n-Lock chock generates twice the support resistance of the same quantity of the same timber in an equivalent size 4 pointer chock. On the basis of support resistance per cubic metre of timber, there is only a marginal difference in the performance of 1.0m Link-n-Lock chocks and 1.2m Link-n-Lock chocks constructed from select Blue Gum. The cost per tonne of support provided by a Link-n-Lock chock is effectively half of that provided by a 4 pointer chock of equivalent dimension and timber. Up to a strain level of 4%. Link-n-Lock chocks constructed from 1.2m long elements are slightly more cost effective than the same chocks constructed from 1.0m long elements. Thereafter, there is no significant difference in cost per tonne of support resistance. Beyond a strain level of about 4%, Link-n¬Lock chocks constructed from landscape grade Blue Gum are just as cost effective as Link-n-Lock chocks constructed from structural grade 4 Blue Gum.

The major functions of longwall headgate entries are to provide access ways to the outby submains or mains for coal transportation and to the longwall face for fresh air and for transporting men and material during longwall operations. Any roof control problems such as cutter roofs or roof falls in the outby headgate entries could result in significant production delays to the longwall face and may be a threat to miners' safety Under a thinly laminated immediate roof and a high horizontal stress field, even a longwall headgate entry that has an angle of less than 45 degree to the maximum horizontal stress may experience roof deterioration in the outby headgate if the longwall panel mining sequence and retreat direction are not properly considered. This paper attempts to analyze the causes of the roof control problems experienced in the longwall gate entries at our Cumberland and Emerald mines in Pennsylvania and to determine the optimal longwall panel mining sequence and retreat direction for the future mining area at Cumberland

"The capacity of ground support components which have been affected by corrosion is reduced and may ultimately lead to dynamic failure of the component and the strata. In order to maintain an effective, long-term ground support system, significant campaigns of rehabilitation are often required in corrosion affected areas which also expose the workers to hazardous conditions. The most common corrosion protection for steel ground support utilises sacrificial systems such as galvanising. Galvanising has previously been proven to be susceptible to some corrosion processes. Stainless steel is the most effective in resistance to corrosion, but can be cost prohibitive, and its mechanical properties often make it unsuited to use in ground support components.Providing an outer protective plastic coating to bolts has proven to be an effective means of protecting the inner steel bar from corrosion. However, these support systems tend to be susceptible to coating damage, and require post cement grouting to provide full encapsulation. In comparison to a standard bolt/resin system, they can be slow to install and expensive. These systems have also been shown to reduce overall load transfer performance of the bolting system.In order provide a higher level of corrosion protection whilst maintaining current installation practices and bolting cycle times, Minova has developed the Enduro™ Steel Ground Support Range. The Enduro™ range consists of standard Minova steel ground support components which have been treated with a unique coating process. The Enduro™ coating has been tested in the harshest of conditions, in laboratory controlled conditions and in underground trials. It has been proven to effectively resist or completely eliminate the formation of corrosion, even in the most aggressive environments. This paper explains the process and provides the details of the laboratory and underground corrosion performance testing carried out on Enduro™ ground support products.INTRODUCTIONTraditionally, the most common form of corrosion protection in steel ground support consists of a sacrificial protective coating such as galvanising (Aziz, et al., 2013). Such coatings have proven to be ineffective in extreme high and low pH conditions with corrosion of the support system commonly encountered. There is also evidence that common forms of galvanising may actually increase the rate of corrosion in certain pH environments. Figure 1 shows typical corrosion and failure of a standard re-bar roof bolt."

"From 2011–2016, there were 1,511 documented injuries, including 7 fatalities, from ground falls in underground coal mines in the United States. The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA.The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft panel of 8-gauge welded screen were evaluated using a newly designed, large laboratory screen test frame with multiple load pull locations. This screen was tested in a configuration that simulates current installation practices in U.S. coal mines. In this study, the effects of varying the number and position of the load pull location on the screen performance were evaluated. Ultimately, the type of information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to aid in developing wire roof screen design criteria and to assist mine operators in the selection and use of roof screen in underground mines.INTRODUCTIONThe large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA."

Pre-feasibility work at Goedehoop Colliery indicated that stooping of the undersized pillars could be undertaken safely and economically. In light of the findings a decision was taken in may 2003 to undertake the project in the 600 area where three panels (628, 630 and 632) were identified for pilot test sites. The findings of the pre-feasibility studies were presented in a paper to the 22nd International Conference on Ground Control in Mining held at Morgantown in 2003 (1). This paper is a progress report for the project 12 months down the line. Work commenced to prepare the sites for mining including, acquisition of equipment, equipping the panels, selecting and training people to undertake the project. Three monitoring sites were set up distributed evenly along panel 628. Each site comprised of a surface extensometer station in the overburden strata adjacent to a pillar underground containing hard inclusion vibrating wire extensometer cells. This combination would be used to record pillar loading ahead of stooping as well as the depth of caving and strata deformation in the goal zone behind the stooping face. In July 2003, support work began to secure the roof and rib sides. The support was required to be at least three-pillar center distances ahead of the mining front to ensure that the effective stooping zone is secured at all times. The NEVID method of pillar extraction developed at Sasol and described in detail by Ismet and Moolman (2) in a Coaltech 20-20 report was adopted for the pilot project. As part of training the selected stooping team was send for a week to Sasol's Bosmanskrans Colliery to familiarize with the NEVID method of stooping. Further training sessions were carried out on site especially on the use of Mobile Roof supports. The first cut was taken on 20 August 2003 by implementing a form of chequerbord mining taking every second row of pillars. Three rows were mined this way which period was considered training to get workers familiar with the new equipment and mining method. On the fourth row the full design span equivalent to mining 4 pillars in a row was implemented taking out all the pillars in successive rows. Production figures gradually increased from 300 to more than 1,000 tons run of mine coal per shift. Panel 628 was mined out at the end of December 2003 and the second of three panels (630) is being mined. Substantial data from the monitoring set up has been recorded since the start of the project. Monitoring will continue to the end of the pilot project and the data will be analysed and fed back into the design tools to improve the design in future undertakings. The pilot project has been a success so far and other old workings are being evaluated for stooping.

As coal production in the United States continues to increase, the availability of unexploited or virgin fields continue to diminish. As a result, mine operators are forced to mine in unfavorable or multiple seam conditions. The safe, productive exploitation of coal in multiple-scam conditions requires specific design technology. At present, there are two general design approaches that the mining engineer can use to analyze the multiple-seam problem in question, either simple empirical relationships or complex numerical models. Often, the empirical approaches are too general for the specific problem and the numerical models require too much time and expertise for the practicing engineer. This paper introduces a new computer program, Lam2D, designed specifically to enhance multiple seam mining operation by quickly and easily calculating, stress, displacement, subsidence, horizontal strain and safety factors associated with multiple seam mining situations. The program implements a simplified, two-dimensional boundary-element method in order to model the complex multiple-seam stress and displacement interactions. Most importantly, the program is greatly simplified by incorporating automatic overburden, interburden, coal and gob property generation thereby reducing typical modeling and solution time to a few minutes.
