In order to further the understanding of spontaneous heating of longwall goafs a numerical model was developed, based on conservation principles applied to the transport of heat, water vapour and oxygen across the god Advective air flow into the goaf is caused by the differential air pressures across the god The air velocity field within the goaf area was computed using Darcy's law. The boundary and initial conditions concern air pressure, temperature and relative humidity. The oxidation rates and heat generation rates of the goaf materials required for the simulation were obtained from laboratory measurements. The main outputs of the model are temperature, oxygen and water contour maps, the rate of air leakage into the go4 velocity field and pressure distribution across the god. The model while still in its development stage, is able to simulate a heterogenous goafs constructed from different materials with different thermal and mass flow properties. Validation of the model by comparing its output with measurements from within goafs is required before the model can be used with confidence in a predictive sense.

Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc. (FGMI) began blending and processing True North ore at their Fort Knox mill on April 12, 2001.Gold extraction subsequently dropped from 88% to 71% during the last week of April 2001. 25% of the gold values remaining in the leach tailings were gravity recoverable free gold. Significant quantities of stibnite and arsenopyrite were also identified in the tailings. In laboratory bottle roll tests, the gold extraction from a composite of leach circuit feed collected during the same period was 72.6%, when leached at an average NaCN concentration of 0.16 g/kg. The extraction increased to 82.4% and 91.7% with 0.5 g/kg NaCN, and 0.5g/kg NaCN plus 0.075 g/kg Pb(NO3)2, respectively. A passivating layer surrounding liberated gold particles and resulting from sulfide mineral dissolution, likely contributes to reduced gold recovery, which can be substantially increased by the addition of lead nitrate. Lead species remain in the solid residues after leaching and were not mobilized using Meteoric Water Mobility Procedure.

The Richmond Hill Mine has recently completed a reclamation plan to mitigate Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) which was identified at the toe of the former waste rock pile in 1992. Reclamation activities began in 1994 with the removal of ARD material from the waste rock pile and placement of this material in the former pit. This material was then isolated from the near surface environment by a low permeability capping system designed to minimize water and oxygen flow into the material. The capping system consists of, from bottom to top, six inches of limestone, 18 inches of low permeability clay liner, 4 and one-half feet of thermal barrier/drain layer, and six inches of topsoil. This capping system was completed in 1995. An extensive program is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the reclamation plan, and includes measurements on moisture content movement, temperature, oxygen content, and groundwater impacts. Monitoring has been ongoing since the completion of reclamation. This monitoring plan is demonstrating the success in isolating the material from the near surface environment and minimizing the impacts to the surrounding environment.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is currently improving its primary water supply system for the Boston Metropolitan area. The improvements planned by the Authority, which provides water for 46 communities and over 2.5 million people in eastern Massachusetts, include the MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel (MWWST) to provide redundancy in the transmission system, a large capacity water treatment plant and extensive covered storage facilities. The 28.3 km (17.6 miles) long, mostly 4.3 m (14 ft.) I.D. MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel will allow repair of the aging Hultman Aqueduct, which for 56 years has served as the transmission main from the water supply reservoirs to Boston. On completion of the tunnel, the old pipeline aqueduct will be repaired and brought back into service as a parallel, redundant transmission main. This paper describes design considerations and the design process for pressure tunnels in general and the MWWST in particular. It provides an overview of how the design of pressure tunnel and shaft components progresses.

A joint research effort by Newmont Gold and Du Pont, working with Kurtis Mooney, of Tri-Combined Resources has developed a new ore-sample bag made of "Tyvek," a spunbonded olefin. "The goal was to find a bag with the best trade-off between efficient draining of moisture, minimal fines loss and compatibility with the conveyor drying process we were developing for our new assay lab," Charles Bucknam, analytical development coordinator for Newmont Metallurgical Services states. None of the available polypropylene, cotton or canvas bags had the needed combination of properties. "Our original tests in 1987 on the plastic bags we had been using showed an average loss of 5.4% of mud sticking to the bags when they were emptied into drying pans. Part of the sample was still in the bag as a residual." Tests on bags of "Tyvek" showed low residuals when the samples were dried in the bags before they were emptied, but about 3% of the fines were lost through the seams. Mooney recommended a new bag design, with fold-over seams.

The Kori Kollo operation is owned by Empresa Minera Inti Raymi S.A., a Bolivian mining company. Inti Raymi is an eighty-five percent owned subsidiary of Battle Mountain Gold Company (BMGC). The remainder of Inti Raymi is held by Zeland Mines S.A., a Bolivian mining company. The project is located near the village of La Joya, approximately 220 km south of La Paz, and 40 km north west of Oruro on the Bolivian altiplano. Inti Raymi started a heap leach operation in 1985. By 1988, following several expansions, 4,000 tonnes per day of oxide ore were being treated. At this time drilling was started to delineate the larger sulfide orebody. A feasibility study for the development of this deposit was completed in 1990, and following project approval, the engineering design was started later that year. During this period orders were placed for the major items of mechanical equipment. In July 1991, Minproc Engineers Inc. was awarded a firm price contract to design and construct the 14,000 tonne per day sulfide ore process facility.

The performance characteristics of a multigravity separator for the recovery of heavy minerals of lead, zinc, copper and silver from a lead rougher-flotation concentrate were studied. Factorially designed experiments were carried out on three operating variables, i.e., the amount of wash water, the drum inclination and the drum rpm, of a multigravity separator. The experiments were carried out at two levels of each variable. With the experimental data, regression equations were developed for different metal grades and recoveries. The analysis revealed that drum speed has a major influence in determining the heavy-metal grade and recovery. Drum inclination is the next most important variable, with the amount of wash water being the least important. A concentrate containing 40% lead, 9.4% zinc, 1.5% copper and 1,400ppm silver was obtained with recoveries of 74.8%, 65.9%, 64.1% and 53.2%, respectively. Finally, the predicted values of grades and recoveries at intermediate levels are compared to actual experimental data to test the validity of the equations developed.

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (MINOSAL) concentrator is located 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Copiapo, Chile. It processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4.2 kt/d (4620 stpd). In 1982, Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL to explore the property's potential. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). At the time of the pur¬chase, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly 50 cents/ lb. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansions, the concentrator is a combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

Introduction For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, scheduled to go into production by the end of this year, includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2.4 km (7,700 ft), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 m (2,000 ft) of development drifting and stope preparation. The project was conceived in the fall of 1979, and the duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is testimony to what can be accomplished when a mining company and a contractor work as a team rather than developing into two warring camps, as often happens. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to outline the data requirements for selecting a proper underground mining method and to discuss the general steps taken in selecting that method. Determining the appropriate mining method is an iterative process that continues throughout the life of a mineral deposit. We will discuss the subject from the standpoint of a feasibility study, where a realistic assessment is necessary in order to determine investment merit. The feasibility stage of a project is that point where the drilling program has defined sufficient geologic reserves to consider mining the deposit but little or no underground development has been done. Primary parameters for consideration in choosing a mining method are 1) geometry of the deposit; 2) distribution of grade; 3) rock mass strength for the deposit, as well as the hanging wall and footwall; 4) mining cost and capitalization requirements; 5) mining rate; 6) type and availability of labor; 7) environmental considerations; and 8) other site-specific conditions. Of these parameters, the first four have the most impact on determining the general mining method to be employed.

Lime and calcium products are essential building blocks to the modern world, used to purify drinking water, preserve foods, control pollution, improve crop yields, stabilize soil, pave roads and support the production of steel, cement, glass and many other industrial processes. While lime is essential to society, it also has a sizable carbon footprint. Approximately 30 percent of the scope 1 greenhouse-gas emissions generated during lime production are related to fuel combustion, while the remaining 70 percent are created by the unavoidable chemical reactions during calcination.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

In the past, most people have associated gold scams with the sale of non-existent gold mines, an undivided interest in unmined ore or the sale of gold-plated lead bars. These scams are still available to those who want to speculate. Now, though, the mining industry is plagued with a new type of con artist. Many of the new scams involve large, well established mining companies being victimized. Nearly all legitimate mining companies are in search of good mining prospects. This makes them susceptible to modern day con artists. Many professionals from the mining and petrochemical industries are out of work. Some of them have gotten involved with scams or activities that border on the criminal. Mining companies are losing millions of dollars each year to scams. Some of these scams involve venture-capital fraud. Some involve fraudulent mining proposals. And some involve unqualified individuals who are providing services by the precious metals industry. The author estimates that mining scams may be costing precious metals companies as much in dollar losses annually as employee theft. Employee theft is at an all time high, but so are gold scams. Since January of 1990, the au¬thor has been involved in gold theft investigations in which more than $1 million in gold product has been stolen by employees. In the past, most of the gold mine scam operators have concentrated on the general public, which is generally ignorant of basic mining procedures and practices. A scam artist would tell someone from your neighborhood that they have a wonderful underground mine. It produces 62.2 kg/t (2000 oz per st) of gold ore. Your neighbor might think that sounds like a very good investment. Those involved in the mining industry know better.

INTRODUCTION The literature on project management considerations and techniques for large rail rapid transit projects in mid-1979 was fairly large and getting larger. UMTA was establishing special organizational elements to deal with the subject as it related to those properties requesting capital assistance, and comprehensive project management plans were being requested from those properties as an early step to build confidence in UMTA that the particular project could be planned, designed, and executed efficiently and effectively, thereby using critically short capital assistance funds to best advantage. In the late 60's and early 70's, the choices of models for heavy rail construction would have been quite limited.., and perhaps much simpler than was the case in 1979. One of the writers was with an agency in 1979 in the process of finalizing its organization for project implementation after several years of study and had the opportunity to review the experiences of others at length, presumably to build on the success and to try to avoid the pitfalls and failures. The properties that were surveyed all reported more or less success stories. One could only conclude that there are many ways to organize for a major transit (construction) project and that there is a great variety of viable management structures, but it seemed that chances for success were best where the executing property had prepared a comprehensive project management plan, then resolved to follow it. Perhaps more important, a commitment or prior approval had been sought from UMTA as to the validity of the project management plan, and the property was allowed to proceed without detailed prior UMTA review or approval of all specific intermediate steps. Most important, however, an early overall UMTA funding commitment had been obtained that permitted some reasonable expectation of the rate of funding, perhaps by commitment

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. Therefore, it is well suited for removing trash, roof bolts, wood, and pyritic balls that are common in Illinois Basin coal. The -75 mm (-3 in.) coal is conveyed from the rotary breaker to

SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most ubiquitous and versatile minerals found in the earth's crust. Its availability, attractive physical properties and relatively low processing cost make CaCO3 the most widely used filler material today. It is mined in three different forms - chalk, limestone and marble. Each physical form of CaCO3 has different qualities due to differences in postdepositional geology. But the chemical composition remains the same, with CaCO3 an inert component of the finished product. In the past, the paper industry largely left CaCO3 by the wayside, as it cannot withstand the acid-based papermaking process. But conversion to an alkaline system by many US mills changed this picture. Carbonate suppliers have put time and effort into research and development, demolishing barriers and creating new possibilities for what is a simple, natural product. By controlling particle size, size distribution and particle charge, the industry uses ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as a performance enhancer and as an extender for more expensive ingredients. It is estimated that the United States uses 3.6 to 4.1 Mt/a (4 to 4.5 million stpy) of CaCO3. Consolidations and mergers are taking place in the industry. Of the 12 major GCC producers in operation nine years ago, seven are left. Mineral Technology (US) is the dominant precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) producer with more than 50 satellite plants worldwide. Other producers include Georgia Marble (French); Franklin Industries (US); OMYA (Swiss); J.M. Huber (US); ECC (English); and Filler Products (US). Global Stone PenRoc (Canada) is the only newcomer. In addition to this group, there are three small producers left in North America, each with a capacity of less than 100 kt/ a (.110,000 stpy). The trade organization operating as the Pulverized Limestone Division of the National Stone Association renamed itself the Pulverized Mineral Division, to increase its membership pool. The US paper industry is a predominant GCC con¬sumer, using approximately 800 kt/a (882,000 stpy) at an approximate cost of $130/t ($1.43/st). European paper mills pioneered alkaline papermaking. In the early 1960s, they began using GCC as filler and soon thereafter added GCC to their coating formulations. A decade later, the North American paper industry followed suit. The conversion from acid to alkaline paper production benefits the economic and performance aspects of the industry. Less pulp is needed, paper machine maintenance and effluent treatment costs are reduced, and sheet strength, opacity and brightness are increased. Perhaps most important to the reader, the sheet is desensitized to ultraviolet light, extending the paper's archival ability. CaCO3 can provide the papermaker with additional control of his paper. For example, PCC has long supplied the tobacco industry with a means to slow down the burning rate of cigarettes. Due to enhanced performance with regard to bulk and opacity, filler PCC use has risen to 1,500 kt/a (1,650 stpy) in the United States, at an approximate price of $130/t ($143/st). The majority is produced onsite at the paper mill, using "satellite plants." This concept reduces freight cost because only quicklime (CaO) is shipped to the mill, not CaCO3 slurry. The future of CaCO3 is encouraging. The amount of natural ground CaCO3 used is expected to double by the year 2005 to approximately 8 Mt (8.8 million st) worldwide. Acid papermaking practices will feel an increasing pressure to convert to an alkaline process as larger volumes of GCC containing paper enter the recycling market. CaCO3 reserves are plentiful. They will supply the ever growing demand for increasingly sophisticated paper. The plastics industry is supplied with almost 900 kt/ a (990,000 stpy) GCC at an annual growth rate of 4% to 5%. The price of a functional, inorganic filler, surface modified for the plastics industry, has an average selling price of $220/t ($243/st). GCC represents the most common filler, creating a product with higher gloss, better dielectric properties, impact resistance, weatherability and shrinkage control. CaCO3-filled plastics surround us - auto hubcaps and dashboards, shower enclosures, floor tiles, wire coatings, microwave dishes and Tupperware. The caulking and sealant industry is an enormous GCC user, with annual consumption requiring 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st) at about $44/t ($48.50/ st). Caulking and sealant may be highly filled with GCC yet undergo no adverse flow effects, with a narrow particle-size-distribution filler decreasing the binder demand. The CaCO3 industry, as well as the carpet industry, are more or less tied to the growth rates of the construction industry. It is estimated that the carpet industry uses some 680 kt/a (750,000 stpy) of GCC at about $25/t ($27.50/st). The paint industry uses approximately 300 kt/a (331,000 stpy) at a 1 % to 1.5% annual growth rate. Here, too, GCC is the dominant filler. It is used to enhance flow characteristics and color uniformity. It also extends costly titanium dioxide, creates sheen and controls roughness, hardness and tack. More CaCO3 should be used in the future as industry shifts from solvent-free or water-based formulations that can accommodate higher GCC volumes. CaCO3 is not imported or exported in any great quantity. Most areas have reserves of their own and the selling price is relatively low. Even so, quality varies from deposit to deposit. As our needs become morespecific, it remains a challenge to provide varying industries with a fitting product.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.
