The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to many agents which induce mutations in germ cells and/or cancer at work, at play, and at home. In this total mix of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents, how important are radon and its daughters? Before man moved into caves and other permanent dwellings, the principal mutagenic and carcinogenic agent to which he was exposed was natural background radiation--cosmic rays, radium and potassium-40 in his food, plus gamma rays and radon from the soil and rocks. When man moved into caves, captured fire, and began to preserve and store foods, his exposure to carcinogens and mutagens took a quantum leap. Carcinogens and mutagens appear to act in the same way, that is, by altering the DNA or nuclear proteins of cells. Most mutagens are carcinogens, and vice versa, so when I say mutagens from here on, I will be referring to both. The relationship of the two is emphasized by the fact that administration of a carcinogen to a group of animals not only increases cancer rates among the exposed animals, but also among their progeny (Tomatis 1979). Environmental Mutagens Smoke from man's fires, overheated foods, and foods preserved by smoking, resulted in ingestion and inhalation of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons--many of which are mutagens. Caves and houses with tight windows and doors tend to collect the radon which is constantly emanating out of soil, rocks and concrete, so man's exposure to the radon daughter component of background radiation increased several fold. Preserving food by salting or pickling with material that contained nitrites and nitrates led to increased ingestion of nitrosamines, which are potent mutagens. When his grains and other foods were stored in slightly damp rooms, fungi or mold would grow on them. Several of these fungi are now known to produce very potent mutagens. The best known of these is aflatoxin B (Ramachandra 1979). It may seem strange that a living organism would produce a mutagen. One might think that it would scramble its own genetic heritage. The reason it does not is that it produces the mutagen in an inactive form. It can be activated only by an animal's enzyme systems after being eaten. When man moved into cities, the collective smoke from wood and coal fires further increased his exposure. That particular smoke has now mostly disappeared, but has been replaced by smoke from automobiles and industry. When man moved into the age of technology, his exposure to mutagens again increased dramatically. Many mutagenic chemicals, from benzene and beta naphthylamine to a long array of pesticides and tobacco products have been added to our environment. Excess deaths from cancer are now being observed among chemists in most industrialized nations. Mutagens are even found in much of our wine, beer, and whiskey (Keller 1980). Some of the chemical mutagens were widely used in food or in other commercial products before their potential was discovered. Striking examples of this is the original butter coloring agent and the polychlorinated biphenyls that have been widely used in brake fluids and electrical transformers. Large quantities of them have been discarded or disposed of in a careless manner--in such a way that many of them have contaminated our food, our ground water and air (Landrigan 1981). In this nation, with the help of several recent laws, we were just beginning to get control of the industrial chemical mutagens. With the relaxing of these laws that is currently going on, it appears that it will be many more years before we really bring chemical mutagens under control. Many nations have yet to come to grips with this problem. On top of this massive array of chemical mutagens we have now added radiation from many artificial sources. For most of us this means medical X-ray and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Ionizing radiation is one of the most potent mutagens, so it has caught the public eye, and its contribution cannot be ignored. Fortunately, by the time we started using radioactive materials in quantity with the Manhattan Project, we had experience with radium and X-ray (some of it bad); we knew enough radiobiology and enough about methods of radiation protection so that most nuclear laboratories have had a phenomenal record of radiation safety. Radiation is one new technology with great potential for harm that has not exhibited that potential except for a few isolated situations like that of radium dial painters, uranium miners and atomic bomb victims. Uranium miners slipped into this list almost by accident. We could have protected our uranium miners just as well as we did the workers in nuclear laboratories; but we failed to do so. Why didn't we? The reason is simple. The Atomic Energy Commission was charged with protecting the health of their workers. They did not wait for a pile of bodies before they introduced controls. Congress appropriated the money, and taxpayers were willing to pay for the protection against radiation. Miners unfortunately did not work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Although mine operators were ignorant about radiation, the key item was that in the 1950s nobody was willing to pay the extra costs of adequate ventilation to control the high levels of radon and radon daughters in uranium mines. Control was not achieved until new laws and regulations were passed which made it compulsory. BIRTH DEFECTS AND CANCER

Caterpillar unveiled a new dozer, the new Cat D10T2 dozer, that builds on the success the company has had with its D10T model. The newest version of the dozer includes refinements to its power train, automated controls and structures. The result, the company said, is high productivity with superior fuel efficiency, reliable operation with long-lived structures, as well as enhanced access for service technicians and operators. The D10T2 uses the latest load-sensing hydraulics technology combined with Cat advanced engine controls to maximize the amount of material moved for every drop of fuel burned. Improved filtration protects the fuel system, hydraulic system and power train oil system to help ensure high reliability and minimal machine downtime. Refined large structures, such as redesigned track roller frames, deliver longer service before rebuilds. Improved access and egress features enhance safety and productivity of technicians and operators, and optional powered access systems and platforms enable configuring the D10T2 for the site. Caterpillar offers the D10T2 with two variations of the Cat C27 engine with ACERT Technology. One version is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final certified, and the other is capable of achieving emission levels equivalent to EPA Tier 2 standards. Both engine configurations produce net power of 447 kW (600 hp) in forward gears and 538 kW (722 hp) in reverse gears. The engine controller automatically adjusts power output based on the direction of travel. With the new system, the D10T2 has about 20 percent more power in reverse compared to its predecessor model. The result is faster cycle times and greater productivity in certain applications. The D10T2 is suited for a variety of applications including mining, heavy construction and bulk materials handling.

Introduction The 150 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this article is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to burn low ranking coals or coal wastes. These include anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash-plant-waste slurries. This article also addresses the impact of fuel characteristics on plant design. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements. The uncertain economic environment in which utilities must now operate has shifted the industry's interest away from large, base-loaded generating units to small, more versatile installations. Utilities now consider purchasing new generating capacity in smaller increments and staging its deployment to correspond with demand increases. In this way, they lower their risk in the increasingly hazardous art of long-range load forecasting. This strategy has many advantages. Multiple, smaller units have inherently greater turndown capability and better availability than a single larger unit of the same size. In addition, the smaller units will each have better cycling capability. And, with CFB combustion, the smaller units will have greater fuel flexibility. General plant description The 150 MW powerplant described here is a grassroots CFB unit. Fluidized bed technology differs from conventional combustion techniques. With CFB, solid fuel, together with inert material such as sand, gypsum, limestone, or ash from the fuel, is kept suspended in the combustion chamber. This is done by using the action of the fluidizing air distributed below the bed. Fluidization promotes the turbulent mixing conditions required for good combustion. The turbulence causes the entire mass of solids to behave like a liquid. The result is improved mixing. This allows heat to be generated at a lower and more uniformly distributed temperature that is below the ash fusion temperature of most coals. The fluidizing mechanism offers several other advantages over conventional combustion. There is less volatilization of alkali compounds, which cause deposits on boiler tube surfaces. And there is less sensitivity to the quantity and nature of the ash in the fuel. The low combustion temperatures prevent vitrification of the ash particles and minimize problems associated with furnace slagging. The ability to select from many fuels is one of the major advantages of CFB combustor technology. Fuels that can be burned in CFB plants to produce steam and electricity include: low grade coals with high ash or sulfur, lignite, peat, wood and pulp products, biomass, refuse, anthracite culm, petroleum coke, and oil shales. The plant's turbine cycle uses superheated steam at 12.4 MPa (1800 psi) and 538°C (1000°F), with single reheat to 538°C (1000°F). Two high pressure and three low pressure, closed, feedwater heaters are furnished. So is a deaerator, which is an open, direct-contact heater. The CFB plant exceeds EPA's New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for air emissions. The design limits sulfur dioxide (SO,) emissions to 0.25 kg/GJ (0.6 lb per million Btu). The rockburst monitoring system at the Sunshine Mine has recently been improved to increase the certainty of burst locations and to output location results in a manner amenable to easy interpretation. Three methods of location calculation were used: a computer code provided with the hardware in-place (the MP-2501, a code based on the least-squares method (Blake et a1, 19741, and a nonlinear iterative code written by the principal author. The more accurate locations are given by the latter two codes, but still are only correct to within about 100 ft. This error is due to uncertainties introduced by the geologic and mining variations versus the assumptions made in the location codes. Software was then written to make two-dimensional plots of burst location by level, so management could monitor problems easily.

The coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been considered as the most serious health problem in the coal mining industry. The development of CWP in a worker lung depends on the average concentration and toxic components of the coal dust and the exposure length. Toxicity studies on coal dust shows the bio-available iron (BAI) in the coal dust plays an adverse role in the CWP development. It is also found that presence of calcite in the coal seams can significantly reduce the CWP cases as evidenced by the significant difference between the coal miners in the western and Appalachian coal regions. Based on this finding, it is proposed to artificially introduce calcite to BAI -containing coals in the effort to mitigate the CWP disease in coal industry. This paper introduces the scientific bases, the main geological factor that makes the differences, the proposed methods to introduce calcite to coal dust or to coal seams. Feasibility for the proposed methods is also discussed.

Introduction Grinding is the reduction of ore and similar raw materials to particle sizes below the practical limits of commercial crushing ma¬chines. This size is about 36 in. (1 cm), in most cases, although some finer crushing machines are in regular use. The feed size to grinding machines may range upward to S in. in rod mills, and 12 in. or more in autogenous mills. The finest particle sizes produced in mineral processing operations result from grinding. Ordinary grinding of brittle materials is the result of impacting, rolling, and abrasion of heavy bodies, moving freely under the influ¬ence of gravity. These falling and rolling grinding bodies, which are usually of metal, must be much heavier and larger than the ore parti¬cles they break. This weight relationship is usually in excess of 100: 1. The sustained fall of the grinding bodies is obtained by placing them, together with the rock particles they grind, in a rotating drum or cylinder with horizontal axis, called a tumbling mill. The mill is nearly half full of grinding bodies and ore particles, which may be fed into one end and exit from the other through hollow trunnions which usually serve as the mill bearings. The mill lining must be thick to absorb wear and rough to prevent excessive slippage of the charge. The breakage of brittle rock or ore is accomplished by compression. The compression may be a rapid impact, from the fall and roll of a grinding ball, or it may result from the relatively slow and constrained motion as in a jaw crusher. Breakage by shear is a secondary result of the compressive motion. Ordinary rock has an extremely heterogenous structure with innumerable zones of weakness in which cracks, fractures, and breakages can form. When a rock is subjected to com¬pression it deforms. If the compressive force exceeds a certain critical value an incipient crack appears in the most fragile zones of weakness. This crack tip may first form on the particle surface or in its interior. When the first crack tip forms the compressive stresses immediately surrounding it flow to it, and this concentration of forces extends the crack and splits the rock. Other adjacent cracks may form during this extremely rapid process. Because of the nature of brittle particles, the work done in breaking them consists essentially of the work input required to compress them to the point at which the first crack tip forms. Breakage requires no appreciable additional energy input be¬yond that required for the deformation, since the stress energy already imported to the rock flows to the crack tip and extends it to breakage. Types of Tumbling Mills The general term tumbling mill includes the rod mill, ball mill, pebble mill, autogenous mill, and tube mill. It is of cylindrical or cylindro-conical shape and rotates about its horizontal axis. Rotational speed, liner type, and size and shape of tumbling media are selected to provide the desired operating conditions for the specific grinding application. Introduction Wear of pumps, wet cyclones and pipelines by suspended solid particles will impact their operating economies by limiting their useful life, reducing their reliability and increasing the amount of servicing. Erosion is considered a materials problem. The empirical solution consists of testing different materials in field applications. Such tests are time consuming and expensive. The prediction of localized wear rates, life estimates and appropriate material selection demand a better understanding of the slurry wear process in environments corresponding to those found in working equipment. Key words: Wear, Slurry abrasion, Coriolis erosion tester The slurry wear process Solid particles suspended in liquid generally move with the flow, but such particles deviate under the centrifugal and Coriolis forces encountered in pumps. The concentration of particles will increase, and a solid layer or bed may accumulate if the acceleration is directed against the flow passage wall. Large particles in dilute suspensions may impact the wall. dissipating their kinetic energies and removing material. However, particles smaller than about 11)(1 µm encounter great drag when moving through the liquid. and such par¬ticles have little kinetic energy left when they reach the wall. They cannot penetrate the stagnant boundary layers present in pumps. Therefore, small particles tend to form beds that slide along the wall, removing material by a process that could he called sliding erosion or wet abrasion. Wear by impact erosion from large particles in dilute slurries can he predicted by appropriate analytical and empirical methods. However, laboratory tests and calculations of wear rates that correspond to sliding erosion are more likely to correlate with field experience from wear under similar conditions. Specific energy Data from laboratory slurry erosion experiments have shown that the amount of material removed is approximately in proportion to the energy expended in the erosion process. Thus. the specific energy-energy expended in removing by erosion a unit volume of material-offers a simple, practical measure for the erosion resistance of materials. The concept was found to also apply to sliding erosion (Clark et al.. 1997). Generally, the study of the material-removal process in slurry erosion continues to remain a subject of research. Conceptually, if the flow velocities and accelerations could be calculated in a pump or pipeline, the energy dissipated at the passage walls could also be estimated, and the material removal rate would become known from the specific energy determined by laboratory tests. Slurry erosion testing Laboratory devices made specifically for slurry erosion testing may be grouped into the following: jet erosion devices, slurry pots and the Coriolis test machine (Pagalthivarthi and Helmly, 1992). Jet erosion devices use a slurry pump and nozzle to produce a high-velocity slurry jet that is directed at a flat material specimen, either perpendicularly or at some acute angle. Combined impact and sliding erosion are produced. but the processes cannot be separated, and the wear is difficult to assess except by weighing. Slurry pots consist of a cylindrical vessel containing the slurry of interest. In the slurry pot, test specimens are attached to a rotating arm. The samples are rotated in the slurry and experience local flow conditions that result in combined impact and sliding erosion. Wear depth measurements from detailed laboratory experiments have been successfully correlated with results from an analytical model of the process, and specific energy values have been calculated (Wong and Clark, 1995). In industrial use, the samples are weighed to determine the total material loss. Materials are ranked with respect to some reference material. The Coriolis erosion tester (Tuzson, 1984) consists of a rotor with a central cavity, from which two opposing radial passages lead out (Fig. 1). The slurry is fed to the centerof the rotor in one pass from a stirred overhead tank. The slurry particles are subjected to the Coriolis acceleration as they flow out through the radial passages. The material specimens are mounted into the radial passage walls facing the direction of rotation and are eroded by the particles that are pressed against them as they flow out radially. A narrow groove is worn into the sample within a few minutes, using a few gallons of slurry. Material removal is estimated accurately from profilometer traverses across the wear scar at different locations. The energy dissipated by the particles can be estimated, which leads to a well-defined experimental value for the specific energy.

Microwave heating of iron ore was investigated as an alternative to conventional reduction processes to solve the problem of slow heat transfer. Microwave heating and reduction tests were run on composite green balls made from coal and magnetite concentrate. Benchscale tests were run on both powdered and pelletized feeds using a 15 kW microwave generator. A significant increase in the reduction rate was obtained. With 20% excess stoichiometric carbon in the mix, more than 90% reduction of the iron ore can be achieved in about 10 min at temperatures of around 1,000°C. The reduction of iron ore with coal by microwave heating produces a pure, dust free, high-Btu flue gas that can be used in related thermal operations. Depending on the purity, the reduced iron product could be fed directly to an electric arc furnace for melting. In some cases, the removal of a slag phase may be required to eliminate excess silica and alumina.

It does not take sophisticated economic analysis to determine the current status of nickel production and demand (Figure 1). One only needs a quick glance at the balance sheets of the major nickel producers to learn that prices are down and profits are supressed to the point where they are major losses. Operations have been closed, and those remaining in production have reduced output. What Is now of interest Is, when will the nickel market improve and to what degree? The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer these questions. This will be done by the normal method of projecting nickel demand, chosing a production scenario, and analyzing the results.

In recent years, we have witnessed many innovations in the equipment used in handling bulk materials. Not too long ago, any sizeable stockpile of coal or iron ore was attended by one or more material handling bridges. More recently, large stockpiles have been built with mobile equipment of' the earth moving type with bulldozers and front end Loaders being utilized in reclaiming operations. The most recent stocking and reclaiming device is the rotary bucket wheel machine. The early bucket wheel machines built in the United States were developed for the strip mining of coal. We understand that the first American machine was built in the Midwest in 1944. This type of unit was developed in an effort to reduce the cost of removing overburden and to provide satisfactory spoil disposal. As the available coal reserves under shallow cover were exhausted, the cost of removing the deeper overburden with conventional equipment became too great for these operations to continue profitably. The first machine has now been followed by six or seven additional units, the largest of which can handle material at a rate of more than 7000 cubic yards per hour.

The Wobbler Feeder is a comparatively new materials handling and separating device. It is essentially a materials separating or scalping machine, particularly adaptable to separation of oversize particles from mine-run ore and to the separation of oversize materials from overburden, where the removal of oversize materials is necessary, as is the case in conveyor stripping. In construction, the Wobbler Feeder is simply a set of transverse bars of manganese steel, or other wear-resisting alloy steel, each having an elliptical cross-section with the major axes of adjacent bars displaced by ninety degrees so when rotating in unison, the pre-determined space between the bars remains constant.

The exposure of miners to radon gas and its airborne daughter products is a serious health problem which has long been recognized in the uranium mining industry. The association of high exposure to alpha particle emitters with incidence of lung cancer is well established. There continues to be a pressing need to reduce and eventually eliminate the high incidence of occupational lung cancer among uranium miners through the development of new and improved measurement and control technologies. This paper highlights the current efforts of the Bureau of Mines radiation hazards research program. It is aimed at obtaining a fundamental understanding of the behavior and transport of radon and radon daughters, developing more accurate and reliable instruments and measurement methods and developing cost-effective control techniques. Also discussed are the most recent accomplishments and the future research plans of the program.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines have developed a control algorithm to efficiently manipulate chaotic systems. The control, based on both fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, prescribes actions that drive the chaotic system to acceptable regions of state space. The use of fuzzy logic enables a person who has limited experience with a chaotic system to establish a set of rules for manipulating the problem environment, and a set of membership functions that define terms used in the rule-set. Genetic algorithms are search algorithms based on natural genetics, and are used in the control algorithm to select membership functions that provide for a suitable level of control. The Bureau-developed algorithm controls the computer simulation of a ball bouncing on an oscillating table, a system that exhibits chaotic behavior.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

One-quarter of a century has passed since the "theory of regionalized variables" (geostatistics) was introduced by G. Matheron (1962, 1963) in France. Yet, only during the past decade has geostatistics found broad acceptance in the mining industry. Foremost among the reasons for this time lag was ignorance. The first English treatise on geostatistics was not written until Matheron (1971), and the first published text accessible to mining professionals did not appear until David (1977). Other significant reasons for the slow acceptance of geostatistics included the conservative nature of management in the 1970s minerals industry, and the fact that conventional ore reserve estimation performs reasonably well when confined to massive deposits of base metal and iron deposits having relatively low coefficients of variation in grades. In short, mine engineers and geologists were not willing to accept a new set of tools for problems that they did not see.

Once a mineralized body has been delineated, drilled and estimated from surface samples, it often happens that before the final go-no-go decision is taken, an underground sampling program is decided, very often via a ramp which hopefully will be later used to extract the ore. The cost of such a program can be close to a million dollars. On other occasions, when a property changes hands and is reexamined maybe 20 years after the original drilling program, a "check sampling" program is carefully, designed to make "sure" that the old assays are "correct". One may fear poor sampling practice in old days, or deliberate highgrading by promoters. Again one may be talking of resampling cost which may be in the six-figures range. Other similar situations include the drilling of a few large diameter holes to ascertain the validity of a majority of small diameter drill holes, or auger drilling, or back-rimming. In uranium checking radiometric information is also a problem related to the above ones.

In the May, 1969 issue of Mining Engineering the Editorial Director, John V. Beall, described the Japanese Onahama Copper Smelter and Refinery as follows: "On the shore of the Pacific, 120 miles north of Tokyo, is the world's most modern copper smelter and refinery.? One of the improvements that has been made at the Onahama Refinery is the quality of the electrolyte in the copper refinery electrolytic cells. This has been accomplished by reducing the concentration of slimes in the cells between the electrodes. In a December 19, 1966 review in Chemical Engineering magazine reference was made to some tests in Sweden as follows: ?However, at 1,000 amps/sq.M., satisfactory cathodes could be prepared, provided electrolyte flow past the anode and cathode was at least 3 to 4 meters per minute, and the slime content was not allowed to exceed 20 to 30 mg. per liter. By dropping the current to 500 amps with the same electrolyte velocity, the slime content could grow to 50 mg. per liter (50 ppm) without causing occlusion at the cathode." From this data it appears that the production capacity of copper refining electrolytic cells can be significantly increased. In order to do this the concentration of suspended contaminating slimes in the electrolyte solution is reduced by filtration. The electrolyte in-between the active electrodes must be purged with higher velocities to maintain a high concentration of the desirable copper ion in the liquid film adjacent to the cathode and the sulfate ion in the liquid film at the anode. This higher velocity also carries away from the cathode the undesirable impurities released from the anode as they are released into the electrolyte as filterable solids.

This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later it will semiautomate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide the section foreman with real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units. This data will allow the section foreman to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and in-mine testing results from the first phase are now available.

Methods to increase the gas penetration through sinter layers. In the field of agglomeration, sintering has gained importance, specially in Europe; in Best-Europe this trend will continue till the year 1980, since it is quite probable that in the blast furnace burdens with 50-60 sinter, 10-20 % pellets and 20-25 % ore lumps will be employed. In order to meet this demand for sinter, new sinter bands with reaction areas between 300-400 m2 will be constructed. Chemical and physical phenomena during the Suction-Draught-sinter process. Iron ore sintering is generally considered as a burning process where the material contains 90-95 % ash i.e. non-combustible ingredients. Sintering represents a heterogeneous exothermic reaction in which the chemical phenomena as combustion, calcination, hydration, reduction and oxydation are superposed by physical phenomena. The physical phenomena are devided into material transport and simultaniously occurring heat transport processes. The velocity of these combined physico-chemical reactions i.e. the change in the reaction site per unit time determine the efficiency of the sinter process. The gas permeability as an important criterion of heat transport during the Suction-Draught sinter process.
