A unique process for removing cyanide and base metal complexes from industrial waste streams was patented by Borberly et al. (1984). The process uses S0, (liquid or gas, or solutions of sulfite salts, or from burning elemental sulfur), plus air that is dispersed in the effluent using a well agitated vessel. Acid produced in the oxidation reactions is neutralized with lime at a controlled pH generally in the range 7 to 10. The reaction requires the presence of soluble copper as a catalyst that can be supplemented by copper sulfate if necessary. The process can be applied to the detoxification of gold and silver mining waste streams, such as carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailing pulps, barren solution bleeds, pond waters and heap leach rinse solutions and also to plating shops waste waters. The S02/Air process has substantial advantages over two of the main alternative methods of cyanide destruction, namely alkaline chlorination and hydrogen peroxide. Alkaline chlorination is highly penalized in terms of reagent consumption. Chlorine is a strong oxidant reacting with species other than cyanide present in the effluent such as thiocyanate and sulfides. Furthermore, alkaline chlorination is an incomplete detoxification process. Iron cyanide is not removed and the potential for harmful byproducts species exist. Consequently, final effluents may be subject to additional treatment in order to comply with regulatory demands.

1.1 INTRODUCTION When underground mining involves total extraction, it induces overburden strata movements. If not properly planned it causes surface subsidence and affects surface environmental conditions. Total extraction usually refers to longwall mining and room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. Surface subsidence has long been a subject of intensive research for scientists all over the world and considerable achievements have been obtained. However due to its difficulties and complicated nature, research into overburden movement has been thus far incomplete as compared to that into surface subsidence. Since surface subsidence is a manifestation of the results of overburden movement, the processes and mechanisms of overburden movement must be fully understood in order to establish the mathematical prediction models of surface subsidence. In this chapter the processes of overburden movement and its zones of movement in the overburden will be discussed. 1.2 PROCESSES OF OVERBURDEN MOVEMENT When total extraction is used, it produces a large void in the coal seam and disturbs the equilibrium conditions of the surrounding rock strata. The roof strata bend downward while the floor heaves. When the excavated area (or gob) expands to a sufficient size, the roof strata will cave. As a result, the overlying strata continue to bend and break until the piles of the fallen rock fragments are sufficiently high to support the overhanging strata. At this tie the overhanging strata no longer cave, but bend and rest on the underlying strata. Strata bending and subsidence develop upward until reaching the surface and forming a subsidence basin. The whole overburden strata and the surface subsidence basin will further go through a period of compaction and gradually become stabilized. Current knowledge regarding the process of overburden movement has been derived from several sources. One is the direct observation of the mined sections and their surfaces, another from field monitoring of strata movements in the overburden, and others from computer modeling and scale modeling in the laboratory. For example, Figs. 1.1 and 1.2 show the results of a borehole monitoring experiment (Borehole B-2) using the full profile borehole inclinometer and full profile borehole extensometer for lateral displacements and vertical subsidence, respectively (Conroy and Gyarmaty, 1983). The panel, 400 ft wide by 5000 ft long and 630 ft deep, was extracted from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam which had an average thickness of 54 in. The face advanced from east to west. Curve A in Fig. 1.1 shows the inclination of the borehole when it was 45 ft ahead of the face at Position A (i.e., on the solid coal side). The total deviation of the borehole was 1/7000. The first shear movement occurred at 130 ft above the coal seam and appeared to have occurred along the bedding plane with large contrast of rock strata on both sides, i.e., sandstone vs. shale. When the face had passed the borehole 79 ft at Position B, the borehole deformed to assume a bow shape with a maximum deviation of 2.8 in. from the center line. Numerous shearing planes occurred and extended further upward. When the face had passed the borehole by 75 ft at position C, strata subsidence was measured. Fig. 1.2 shows that a strata separation as large as 4 ft occurred at 40 to 100 ft above the coal seam. Above this level, the strata subsided more uniformly with bedding separations within 1 to 2 in. Another example is the longwall mining with complete caving in the Soviet Union's Karaganda Coalfield (Kolebaeva, 1968). The coal seam was 6 ft thick and 154 ft deep. The immediate roof was the fine-grained sandstone interbedded with coarse-grained sandstone. Above this, there was sandy shale and shale. In order to monitor the process of overburden movement, 15 stations were established in a borehole (Fig. 1.3). The elevations of those stations were measured when the face was at various distances from the borehole. Fig. 1.3 shows the movement history of each station. For convenience of comparison, the movement history of each station was plotted on a common reference point as shown in Fig. 1.4. Clearly, the movements of strata from Station # 1 to #6 were nearly simultaneous, i.e., they behaved as a single unit. The strata from Station #7 to # 15 had differential separations, the maximum of which was 40 in. As the face passed by and moved away, strata separations in general reduced gradually. But strata separation between Stations #12 and #13 remained the same until the end of the monitoring period. The total bed separation between Station #7 and # 15 reached 11 in., approximately 18% of seam thickness, when the face was 132 ft beyond. Based on the above observations, the author developed a conceptual model of overburden movement due to underground longwall mining (Fig. 1.5). The above-mentioned two case studies illustrated that subsidence in the overburden strata propagates upward and subsidence velocity decreases from the bottom to the top. When the subsidence velocity at the surface reaches the maximum value, the subsidence velocity at the bottom portion of the overburden strata has decreased considerably and the strata have begun to compact. Bed separation occurs within a certain distance above the coal seam and reduces from the bottom to the top. When the face has moved away, bed separation reduces gradually, so that eventually some beds completely close and others partially close. Bed separation reaches the highest level when the subsidence velocity at the surface is at its maximum value. For instance in Fig. 1.4 surface subsidence velocity was maximum when the face was 38 to 44 ft past the point. At this time the total bed separation was maximum. Overall the strata directly above the opening are subjected to tension in the vertical direction. But above a certain level, all strata move nearly simultaneously. There is also significant shear movement along some bedding planes. 1.3 ZONES OF MOVEMENT INTHEOVERBURDEN After the extraction of a longwall panel or room and pillar section of sufficient width the strata in the overburden are subjected to various degrees of movement from the bottom to the top. According to the movement characteristics, the damaged overburden can be divided into four zones (Fig. 1.6). Caved Zone. After the extraction of coal, the immediate roof caves irregularly and fills up the void. The strata in this zone not only lose their continuity completely, they also lose their stratified

Orebodies with intricate three-dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer-assisted methods. The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral deposits.

The elimination of metal ions from aqueous solutions by biosorption plays an important role in water pollution control. Heavy metals are hazardous to the aquatic ecosystem and pose possible human health risk. Beside the toxic and harmful effects to organisms living in water heavy metals also accumulate throughout the food chain and may affect human beings. Conventional methods for removing metals from aqueous solutions before they are disposed of include chemical precipitation and sludge separation, chemical oxidation or reduction, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, electrochemical treatment, and evaporation. Alternative processing methods are being considered more seriously. Sorption and/or complexation of dissolved metals species based on the chemical activity of biomass, known as biosorption, is the base of the new technology for metal removal and recovery. Different types of biomass (dead and alive) have been investigated for biosorption of heavy metals ions. In the present work, the cadmium biosorption capacity and bioflotation of Rhodococcus opacus were studied. The adsorption capacity of biomass was investigated by batch experiments, the influences of some variables like pH and ion concentration were evaluated and the experimental data obtained for each metal were evaluated and fitted using adsorption and kinetic models. The bioflotation process showed that R. opacus has excellent features as collector and foaming agent after metal biosorption. Around 90% of cadmium uptake by the biomass was achieved by bioflotation.

The chemistry of waters processed by Acid Rock Drainage water treatment plants can affect the Total Suspended Solids quality of the plant effluents. The sulfate ions in the ARD water will combine with the calcium ions from the lime that is used to adjust pH to form calcium sulfate. When the sulfate content of the waters to be treated is greater than about 1400 parts per mil­lion, the resulting calcium sulfate concentration will be approx­imately 2100 parts per million. This concentration is above the saturation point for calcium sulfate, and the salt will drop out of solution until the concentration falls below the saturation point. This "salting" phenomenon affects the total suspended solids of the treatment plant effluents by virtue of the fact that the salts will report to the filtration apparatus used for the analy­sis. This scenario is exacerbated as an effluent sample ages. Zortman Mining's water treatment plant effluent was being affected by "salting" during the spring and summer of 1995, and it seemed as though the effluents were exceeding the TSS lim­its; for no obvious reason. A testing program was initiated to verify an observation that "salting' was taking place. Treatment plant samples were collected and allowed to age, with TSS analyses being performed every day that the samples aged. Synthetic solutions were also prepared to study the "salting" phenomenon.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) multiple seam interaction between web and barrier pillars in superjacent mines, ii) subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and mines, iii) pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, iv) the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. Miners working in underground mines where diesel equipment is used are exposed to exhaust pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hundreds of different hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter. Evidence from animal inhalation studies and limited epidemiological investigations have led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that ‘... whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen ...’ NIOSH further stated that ‘... the excess cancer risk for workers exposed to diesel exhaust has not yet been quantified, but the probability of developing cancer should be decreased by minimizing exposure…’ The International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) reached a similar conclusion, saying that ‘... diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans.’ Before these declarations, there was insufficient evidence concerning the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. It was well known, though, that diesel exhaust caused less severe problems, such as headache, eye irritation and unpleasant odors. In 1988, a milestone was reached in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory process. An advisory committee recommended a three-tier approach to regulating diesels used underground-approval of diesel equipment, safety and health. Diesel particulate matter may be specifically regulated. In addition, ambient air quality standards are being proposed that will establish a new standard for CO2 and lower the permissible exposure limits for the NO2, CO, SO2 and formaldehyde emissions that originate from diesels and other sources. Additional safety and emission restrictions are also proposed for diesel engines in coal mines. The goal of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) diesel engine research program is to minimize the health and safety problems associated with underground diesel equipment use. Part of this program is focused on reducing exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines.

In, any open pit mine the ability to make accurate production estimations for the shovel-truck system is an important asset. This is true in an operating mine wishing to estimate production under a set of system modifications (i.e. more trucks, fewer loaders, change in roads, etc.), as well as in the pre- mining planning stages of a property. Many different methods have been proposed for solving this problem; some of the methods rely heavily on "rules of thumb" while others are highly mathematical and require access to a high speed digital computer. Analysis of shovel-truck systems with the use of simulation models is a widely accepted technique within the industry. Through the use of such models it is possible to account for much of the inherent variability of the system and thus produce meaningful results. However, simulation studies are expensive. Formulation and setup of the actual simulation model requires a significant commitment of time and energy. In addition, the cost of the necessary computer runs is often of considerable magnitude.

INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Mining is promoted as an industry while prevention of pollution is required along with reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) system of "one-stop shop- ping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process. It fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Paha Sapa means "Hills that are Black" in Dakota Sioux. Appearing dark from a distance due to a thick forest of Ponderosa pine, the Black Hills were gold to many people. The exact date that gold was discovered in the Black Hills remains debatable. Object-oriented programming, design, and expert systems are part of this technology which is shaping the future of real-time supervisory control. Goals of real-time supervisory control systems include: minimizing variations in process operations, improving efficiency, maximizing production, and implementing procedures for starting and stopping the process. Incorporating object-oriented technology in design, development and implementation of real-time supervisory control systems provides new opportunities for these tasks. Ever since the introduction of the first successful continuous mining machines some twenty odd years ago, there has been an obvious, and steadily increasing, need for some form of continuous haulage machine, or system to work with them. There is universal agreement that the continuous mining principle, and the various continuous mining machines in particular, have done a great deal for mining. However, coal mining men, who have the longest and broadest experience with them, agree that continuous miners do not truly mine continuously. In fact, their estimates, and actual studies, show that the real mining time of these machines ranges, on the average, from 20% or less to about 30% of the available shift time. Part of the failure of the continuous mining machine to mine continuously may be ascribed to breakdowns in its intricate machinery. Most of the failure, however, is blamed on a variety of other factors. Of these, there are two which are given particular blame: face haulage and roof control. The relative importance of the two as the major negative factor in continuous mining is a moot point. However, there is an extensive concensus that haulage is the number one problem. Roof problems and their control are inhibiting factors regardless of the type of mining or mining machines employed. But the truth of the matter is that a continuous mining machine, like any type of loading machine, whether underground or on surface, is only capable of mining or producing in direct ratio to the mineable, or loadable, material that can be kept ahead of it and equally, if not more, important, that can be taken away from it. Many long conveyors, 2 - 20 km plus, have been installed over the past 10 years. Conveyor belt life, depending on the conveyor length and material handled, will generally range from 10 - 15 years. To replace long conveyors splicing one or two rolls into a conveyor run on an intermittent basis can be prolonged in an operating system involving considerable downtime and scheduling problems. This paper presents some of the methods used to- date and highlights forward planning for such an event. Special belt handling equipment required and the execution of a belt change operation are described in detail. Wright Engineers Limited have worked in collaboration with Canada Conveyor to design and implement the methods described herein.

This study aims to investigate the reduction thermodynamics of ilmenite and pre-oxidized ilmenite, and reveals the isothermal reduction kinetics of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate by carbon monoxide. The results indicate that the ilmenite concentrate and pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate can be selectively reduced by controlling the temperature. The pre-oxidation process leads to the breakage of complex mineral structure, and the formation of porous simple oxides, which is an effective method to increase the reduction and leaching rate.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. 5.1 INTRODUCTION Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for exploitation of low-grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. Primary among the necessary ore characteristics is that the ore must have good permeability after being crushed or treated and stacked into heaps if uniform distribution of the cyanide leach solution is to be achieved. Gold and silver ores containing excessive amounts of clays or fines generated by crushing are some of the most difficult to treat successfully by heap leaching. The presence of excessive amounts of slimes (generally classified as minus 50-micron or 270 Tyler mesh sieve size particles) in the heap leach feed will slow the percolation flow of the leach solution, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap, causing the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than to penetrate the ore heap. The problem of heap leaching ores containing fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the ore heaps, because natural sorting of coarse and fine material occurs during these steps (Johanson, 1978). This phenomenon results in a concentration of ore fines at the center of individual ore piles and a concomitant concentration of larger rock fragments on the lower slopes and base of the piles. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off prior to installation of the sprinkling system which delivers the leach solution, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. The segregation results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. As a consequence, the leach solutions follow the path of least resistance, percolating downward through the coarse ore regions and bypassing or barely wetting areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective utilization of marginal gold and silver resources through heap leach processing requires the development of new methods in order to achieve more uniform size distribution during ore heap preparation and better slime control during leaching.

In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.
