This paper presents a method for evaluating the economic feasibility of solution mining a hypothetical uranium roll-front deposit. It is assumed the wellfield will be operated in a prudent manner and that leaching tests were performed in depth in both lab and field (push-pull) prior to startup. Leach test results are reduced to two important parameters and used as the basis for solution mining a wellfield. This case study assumes a 10 mil- lion-lb uranium deposit with 40 possible small wellfields; four are kept in operation simultaneously until the deposit is depleted. The wellfields have different ore reserves and grades, lixiviant circulation rates, leach rates, and peak concentrations, and thus the daily uranium production will vary. Daily production is used to assess the profitability of a particular lixiviant and the mode of well- field operation in light of realistic market price estimates. The mathematical procedure is simple and straightforward, based on reasonable in-situ leaching relationships as well as accepted accounting practices.

This paper describes some concepts developed in a geologic data recording system at the Victoria, Nevada breccia pipe-skarn copper mine. The recording system is not fundamentally new, but represents expansion of earlier ideas. The paper is based on the philosophy that a high quality geologic data base is necessary and that it should be complete, clear, standardized, neat, quantitative, and readily useable. It may be multi-colored or simply black and white. Graphic, descriptive and quantitative recording of data is essential. A format for core logging is presented and discussed and as well as a multiple overlay system for recording data gathered in surface mapping.

Heavy media processes have been used for cleaning +28 mesh coals for a number of years, Two applications, i.e., the vessels and the cyclones are widely used in the U. S. for this purpose. The basic reason for the popularity of these systems is their extremely high efficiencies for particle sizes above 28 mesh, However, application of heavy media technology to fine coals below 28 mesh, has been limited due to the following reasons: o Inability to make size separations effectively at sizes below 28 mesh o Necessity of feeding large quantitites of magnetite to the separators o Difficulty of recovering magnetite in the presence of large quantities of coal o High levels of coal contamination in the recovered media, leading to high circulating loads and ineffective control of media gravity

Introduction The disposal of mine tailings, development rock, and other unwanted refuse material underground in mines by using pneumatic conveying techniques has been undertaken in the coal industry for many years. Similar equipment has been utilized for backfilling hard rock mines and is currently being applied in a gold mine in South Africa where development rock is being stowed in the mined-out stopes to help reduce the incidence of rock outbursts. On a limited scale, pneumatic conveying has been applied for backfilling uranium mines and one particular mine in New Mexico, U.S.A., has used this technique for 8 years. Other uranium mines in this area are now considerinq the dry backfill technique to eliminate the problems associated with hydraulic fill. The need to backfill in uranium mines is primarily of importance to improve ventilation, stabilize the pillars and roof, and possibly to extract a larger percentage of the uranium ore. If this can be achieved by utilizing the tailings from the beneficiation plant and using rock from the development headings which in itself may be slightly radioactive, then a greater benefit can be derived. Backfill can be achieved with hydraulic fill methods by running slurry into the stopes and allowing the water to decant and return through the footwall development entries to sumps for pumping to the surface. However there are several disadvantages associated with this method in that water is percolating throough the mine workings; it is necessary to build bulk heads in flat lying deposits; it is difficult to fill right to the back; and the decanted water takes with it quantities of the finer sand particles which results in maintenance problems with the mine pumps. Pneumatic conveying can overcome these problems in that the voids can be completely filled with high degree of compaction, heavy bulk heads are not necessary, the development rock can be added to the pneumatic system for disposal underground so eliminating hoisting cost to the surface, and cement can be added to the wetted material. Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

A common problem in mineral processing and chemical engineering is the need to estimate flow rates and/or weight ratios involved with engineering operations for which it is inherently difficult to directly measure stream weights. Simple examples of this situation include stream separators (a classifier operating on a particle flow) and stream mixers (the mixing of new feed and circulating load in a ball mill circuit). Often in these types of operations, it is possible to sample the streams involved to get approximate component analyses (e.g. size distributions of solid streams, chemical composition of chemical streams). In this paper various formulae are developed which can be used to estimate stream flow rates or weight ratios given information on the stream components. The type and level of experimental error present in the stream component analyses does have an important bearing on the numerical values (and reliability) of the weight ratios calculated by the various formulae. A simple but theoretically sound method is shown for selecting appropriate estimation formulae for any given engineering operation. The derived formulae are applied to sets of experimental classification data for illustration purposes.

In Exxon's Los Bronces Expansion Project in Chile, a stochastic simulation is performed to resolve the complex decision problem of matching the mine to mill system capacities from both technical and economic standpoints. The unique combination of weather conditions at the mine and the 30-km belt conveyor network for ore transport to the mill necessitates this analysis in the planning phase to optimize the design capacity of the sys tem. Appropriate statistical distributions of major equipment performance, snow storm duration, power outage, etc, ate developed from actual mine local records and manufacturers specifications. The interactions of operational constraints including ore storage capacities, number and sizes of individual equipment, ore variations, and mine and mill production rates are studied more realistically than in a traditional planning approach. Details of the computer modeling and typical results of simulation studies are discussed.

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

One of the seemingly eternal problems with which we are frequently faced is that of providing adequate and economical warehousing facilities to store large quantities of bulk product. Seasonal consumption, transportation, marketing, and other factors very often dictate extensive product warehousing requirements for an operation geared for steady, year-around production of a material requiring weather protection during storage. Fertilizers such as potash and urea are examples of such products; the consumption of these materials is extremely heavy in the early spring at which time the materials must be placed in the soil, whereas, for obvious operating efficiencies, production is more or less constant for a given operation throughout the year.

INTRODUCTION Ever since miners were faced with the task of moving ore, some form of scraper has been in use. At first, men and beasts of burden supplied the power to move the scraper, and later, machines were developed for this purpose. In the early 1900s, a few mining properties used small pneumatic single-drum winches to pull loaded scrapers to a raise or ore pocket, and the empty scraper then was dragged back to the muck pile by a miner, as shown in Fig. 1. Just prior to 1920, an improvement was introduced, using two single-drum hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 2, the second hoist was used to return the empty scraper to the muck pile. However, this arrangement still re¬quired two men, one operating each hoist. The next developmental step was to eliminate the second man by locating the hoists side-by-side and using one man to control both hoists. As illustrated by Fig. 3, this involved the use of a tail rope over a sheave to pull the scraper back. The greatest progress in development and the great¬est increase in the use of slusher haulers occurred between 1920 and 1930. In 1921, the Sullivan Machinery Co. designed and built the first two-drum scraper oper¬ating on the principle illustrated by Fig. 4. It was powered by a 4.5-kW (6-hp) Turbinair(r) motor and would pull a 450-kg (1000-1b) load at 0.61 m/s (120 fpm). In 1922, this unit was shipped to the Verona Mining Co. of Caspian, MI, and it experienced immediate success in the Lake Superior iron ore district. Since the two-drum slusher was much less expensive and more efficient than hand mucking, the Lake Superior mines were saved from financial disaster when iron-ore prices fell 25% between 1923 and 1925. Immediately there¬after, a demand developed for slushers that would oper¬ate with electric power, which was considerably cheaper than compressed-air power. In 1923, the Sullivan Machinery Co. responded with the first electric-powered double-drum hoist. During subsequent years, design improvements in¬cluded separate tail-drum gearing to increase the tail¬drum speed, as welt as a number of safety features such as rope guides. One result of these improvements and their utilization by the Michigan iron mines was an in¬crease of 100% in the tons of ore per miner per day in those mines between 1924 and 1929. Since the two-drum slusher was capable only of straight-line mucking, it was not a practical machine for use in open stopes. In 1929, the Sullivan Machinery Co. introduced the first three-drum slusher. As illustrated by Fig. 5, two tail drums and one hauling drum were provided. A tail sheave could be placed at each side of the stope, and the ore then could be loaded and hauled to a central point from the entire width of the stope. During the 1930s, progressively larger slushers were demanded. By 1940, two- and three-drum units were available with motor power as high as 45 kW (60 hp), and slusher power continued to increase after 1940. Be¬tween 1951 and 1952, Joy Manufacturing Co. designed a 112-kW (150-hp) two-drum Blusher for the Climax Molydenum Co. Although there has been no demand for a slusher more powerful than this, 150- to 225-kW (200- to 300-hp) slushers are quite feasible at the pres¬ent time. During the last 30 years, many slusher improvements have been made to the operating life, operational safety, and ease of operation and maintenance. Increased tail-drum speeds have decreased overall scraping times. Rope guards, totally enclosed drums, and operator shields have reduced the hazards of injury due to wire¬rope breakage. Improvements in lubrication have made the slushers relatively maintenance-free, with long operating lives. The introduction of spring-actuated drag brakes prevented uncontrolled unreeling of dis¬engaged drums, allowing the development of practical remote-control slusher operation. Remote control now is available in a choice of all-air, all-electric, or air¬electric slushers. Introduction The geological processes that form coal can also concentrate trace elements in the coal. For example, the average concentration of arsenic in bituminous coal (20 ppm) is ten times the average concentration found in all the other rocks that make up the earth's crust (2 ppm). Similarly, other elements, such as antimony, cadmium, mercury and selenium, are more concentrated in coal than in the earth's crust. When coal is burned, trace elements can be further concentrated. Although no new constraints on trace clement emissions were placed on the power generation industry under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the act does mandate a three-year study of air toxics. Any new regulations aimed at electric utilities as a result of this Federally-mandated study will almost assuredly be very costly-an estimated $1 billion per year. Many trace elements in coal are associated with mineral matter. For example, arsenic is commonly associated with pyrite, cadmium with sphalerite, chromium with clay minerals, mercury with pyrite and cinnabar, nickel with millerite, pyrite and other sulfides, and selenium with lead selenide, pyrite and other sulfides (Finkelman, 1980). There are also cases in which some of these elements are organically bound. Just as both organic and pyritic sulfur can be found in the same coal, the same trace element may be both organically bound and present as part of a mineral in the sane coal. Physical coal cleaning techniques are effective in removing mineral matter from coal and can potentially remove at least some of the trace elements associated with specific minerals, thereby reducing the release of these elements into the atmosphere. Conventional coal cleaning to remove trace elements As part of a project funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, CQ Inc., a wholly-owned EPRI subsidiary located in western Pennsylvania, has demonstrated that large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements are possible if conventional coal cleaning techniques are properly applied. Four examples are given in Tables 1 to 4. In each example, the results shown were generated by cleaning the coal at CQ Inc.'s commercial-scale cleaning test facility. Cleaning results for Upper Freeport Seam coal from Northern Appalachia are provided in Table 1. Data are presented in the table in two ways: as a weight-based concentration (parts per million) and as a concentration per heat unit (grams per billion Btu). Grams per billion Btu is analogous to pounds per million Btu, but avoids the use of numbers with many decimal places. The heat-based concentration provides a better measure of boiler impacts, because the increased heating value obtained through coal cleaning reduces the number of tons that must be burned to produce a given thermal output. Reducing the quantity of coal burned reduces the quantity of trace elements entering the boiler. This raw coal is relatively high in several trace elements of environmental concern, including arsenic, cadmium and chromium. Cleaning provided large reductions in the quantity of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, fluorine, lead, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc. The results for tests with a Powder River Basin coal, Rosebud/McKay, are presented in Table 2. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, fluorine, mercury, nickel, selenium and zinc were observed with cleaning. The concentration of chromium increased with cleaning, while lead concentration increased in one test and decreased in another. Table 3 presents test results for Croweburg Seam coal from Oklahoma. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium and zinc were obtained with cleaning. Smaller reductions were obtained with lead and nickel, while chromium, fluorine and mercury increased in at least one of the tests. Table 4 presents cleaning test data for Kentucky No.11 Seam coal. In this case, large reductions were obtained with all elements measured. In general, these data indicate that physical coal cleaning is effective in reducing the concentration of many trace elements, especially if they are present in the coal at relatively high concentrations. The degree of reduction achieved is coal-specific, relating in part to the degree of mineral association of the specific trace element and the degree of liberation of the trace element-bearing mineral. 1.1 The purpose of this paper is to show the way by which estimates are made of the tonnage and grade of iron ore and taconite reserves of Minnesota. 1.2 The procedures include those of estimating the open pit reserves of: (a) Natural iron ore, and (b) Taconite 1.3 The methods of estimation which will be discussed are primarily based on the information from exploring iron ore deposits. They consider the geology of the deposit as well as the contained mineral of potential value. 2.0 Some geologic, engineering, and economic principles. 2.1 Ore 2.11 "In the broad economic sense, and from a legal standpoint as well, ore is mineralized rock, which under appropriate conditions of time, space, technology, economics, and politics, can be mined, processed, and made to yield a saleable metal , or other mineral products at a profit."(Parks, 1957) Stated differently, metallic ore is rock material from which presently known methods of beneficiation, a merchantable concentrate, suitable for use in the manufacture of metals at a profit, can be produced. Crude ores as low as 0.38% metal, as in the case of copper and even lower in the case of the precious metals.

Pore-filling organic material concentrated uranium to form sandstone-hosted primary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Grants uranium region, New Mexico. Petrographic observations and radiometric ages for primary ore in the Westwater Canyon Member require that the organic material was emplaced early in the diagenetic history of the host sandstone; in fact, organic material was emplaced before major compaction. This inferred early emplacement constrains models concerning the nature and origin of the organic material and thus also constrains models of ore genesis. Reconstruction of the burial history of the basin indicates that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the interval of inferred emplacement of the organic material, was probably not a time of hydrocarbon generation and migration. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, elemental abundances, and isotopic studies provide further constraints on the nature of the organic material, and data from these studies are consistent with a humic acid rather than an oil origin. In addition, the overall tabular shape of primary uranium orebodies and the way these orebodies are suspended in the host sandstone mimics Recent deposits of humate, the precipitated form of humic acids. The critical clue that favors a humic acid origin for ore-related organic material is provided by the nature and patterns of postdepositional alterations that are spatially and temporally related to primary ore, specifically destruction of detrital magnetite and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide) grains. Humic acids are implicated in the destruction of iron-titanium oxide grains because these organic acids are one of the most effective natural agents in leaching of Iron from these grains. Thus, timing constraints, chemical evidence, orebody geometry, and the nature and patterns of ore-related alterations favor a humic acid origin and suggest that an oil origin is highly unlikely. Because alteration of iron-titanium oxide grains tracks the pathways of humic-bearing solutions through the host sandstones, it is possible to trace these solutions back to their source. Alteration patterns in the Westwater Canyon Member suggest that the humic-bearing solutions originated as pore fluids in the mudflat facies of the overlying Brushy Basin Member and moved into adjacent sandstones during early dewatering of the mudstones. The humic acids precipitated, by the process of cation loading, in tabular layers. Uranium was concentrated within these tabular layers by complexation with the humic acids to form primary uranium orebodies.

The difficulties encountered while sinking deep shafts for Potash Mines in southern Saskatchewan have been the subject of several papers in the past. Geological and hydrological conditions of the strata overlying the potash deposits require special techniques for ground and water control during shaft sinking. The easily soluble potash ore requires the lining of these shafts to be virtually watertight to assure long term and safe operation. This paper describes the construction of the most recently completed potash shaft for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. The shaft was designed and constructed by Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd. and it is located near Lanigan, approximately 110 km east of Saskatoon.

Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

Since geologic anomalies are one of the governing factors of instability of underground openings, it is extremely important to know in advance the locations and extent of these anomalies such as faults and weak zones. At an underground coal mine in the Black Warrior Basin, core drilling was conducted to find a fault in an area where they were planning to locate longwall panels and possibly a shaft. Core logging did not provide sufficient information to delineate the exact location, strike, and dip of the fault. However, a high resolution reflection seismic study successfully solved this problem. This experience proved the seismic exploration technique could be used for premining coal exploration by reducing drilling costs and providing more accurate and detailed information about geologic anomalies.

Introduction For the past several years the Bureau of Mines has undertaken research to develop alternative mine material haulage systems that will improve mine productivity, reduce haulage costs, increase mineral availability, and conserve energy. One basic concept being pursued is a means for crushing primary blasted rock to a size that can be reliably and economically moved on conveyors. During 1980, mine requirements for this equipment and the capability of existing technology to satisfy these requirements were assessed. The study continued into 1981 on the basis that satisfactory equipment for this purpose needed to be developed. The objective of the 1981 program was to perform an engineering design of such a system. A mine survey and equipment development study was conducted in cooperation with the open-pit mining industry by GATX through its subsidiaries, Fuller Co. (a crusher manufacturer) and GARD Inc. (GATX's research and development center), under contract to the USBM. Results of a mine survey in the copper, iron, and molybdenum industries indicated that a universal crusher system could be developed even though details might vary from mine to mine. The crushing characteristics, including tonnages desired, were similar in all surveyed mines. Most mines had similar views about the desirability and frequency of crusher movement. The perceived need for in-nit crushing varied between copper and iron mining. The copper mines felt a greater sense of urgency for introduction of such a system, probably because typically greater vertical haulage is found in copper mines than in the iron mines. All mine personnel surveyed were interested in portable crushers and almost universally preferred gyratory-type primary crushers. They preferred large crushers, citing inherent reliability and durability, and the machine's relative freedom from clogging. Large size minimizes the number of crushers and conveyors needed. Analysis of desired crusher system characteristics (Table 1) fixed the crusher size at 1.5 x 2.3 m (60 x 89 in.). The 1.5-m (60-in.) feed-opening dimension could accept the largest material normally fed to the crusher, and the 2.3-m (894n.) head diameter could fulfill the 3.63 kt/h (4,000 stph) capacity requirement. Selected System Description The comments and analyses discussed in the contract report led to the design and refinement of a movable crusher system. This system represents the consensus of more than 100 mine workers and almost 50 construction and engineering company personnel. It is supported by more than 50 years of experience in crusher manufacturing. Although many alternatives are available for any given system, and selections are likely to be dictated by varying site conditions, the selected system is believed to be appropriate for most projected requirements. Final design would be dictated by mine operators during evaluation for approved projects. Detail design of the feed and discharge systems were not included in the study because they are mine specific. The basic system (Fig. 1) consists of a 1.5 x 2.3-m (60 x 89-in.) gyratory crusher on a structural steel frame. The frame is used as an operating platform for the crusher and as a carriage to move the crusher. The control tower includes a crusher lubrication room, a hydraulic equipment room, a switch gear room, a room for the motor control center, and a control room for operating the crusher and maintaining the equipment. The auxiliary system consists of a hydraulic rock hammer and pedestal crane with 74-t (80-st) and 14-t (15-st) hooks. Figure 1 also shows stairs, railings, and a work platform. Feed and discharge arrangements are shown on Fig. 2. The system shown is for mildclimate applications. Additional enclosure and heating would be needed for extremely cold weather conditions. Crusher A 1.5 x 2.3-m (60 x 89-in.) gyra¬tory crusher was selected for this application. This size can handle the typical throughput of 3-3.63 kt/h (3,500-4,000 stph) desired by the mines and the 1.3-m (50-in.) material to be crushed without difficulty. The crusher is the heaviest

Over 100 saprolite samples from Turkey Hill Gold Mine, Lumpkin County, Georgia, were analyzed (-80 mesh) for As, Au, and Sb. Maximum values are 16.2 ppm As, 7.9 ppm Au, and 29.1 ppm Sb. Results show trace element content of saprolite varies with topography: ridge top samples show a pronounced decrease in Au and Sb, and to a lesser degree in As, whereas, slope and valley samples have anomalous Au and Sb concentrations, with no discernable pattern for As. Statistical analysis shows strong correlation between Au and Sb and none between Au and As. This study will serve as a model for gold exploration in deeply weathered terrains with variable relief.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a chlorine-oxygen leaching technique for the recovery of metal values from lead-zinc sulfide concentrates. Lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, and silver extractions are in the 95- to 99.9-percent range. During leaching, the zinc, copper, cadmium, and silver are solubilized as metal chlorides, and lead is converted to insoluble lead sulfate. The iron contained in the concentrate is converted to insoluble iron oxide, and a majority of the sulfide is converted to elemental sulfur Minor metals such as copper, cadmium, and silver are recovered by precipitation with zinc dust. Zinc is then recovered from the purified zinc chloride solution by evaporation to dryness; the lead is recovered from the leach residue by brine leaching and crystallization to produce lead chloride. Recovery of zinc and lead metals by fused-salt electrolysis of the chlorides is being studied separately.

The marketability of a large volume bulk material is significantly effected by transportation costs. Hence, it is essential for anyone that deals with minerals or mineral wastes to be able to reliably estimate bulk transport costs. The three types of bulk overland transportation modes that will be discussed are truck, railroad, and pipeline. Contract and private carriage are the two types of truck transport generally suitable for movement of bulk commodities. Contract carriers are those transportation firms that service a limited number of shippers and geographic points, and carry a restricted number of commodities. Private carriage consists of control over drivers and equipment by the shipper, ownership or lease of the transport equipment, and shipment of commodities related to the primary business of the shipper.1 A combination of private and contract carriage may also be used. Depending on the size and regularity of the shipment, rail offers single car, multiple car, or unit train service to move bulk minerals. Both long and short distance pipeline transportation has been shown economically and technically feasible for many different solids such as, mine and quarry products, coal, chemicals, copper concentrates, phosphate rock, and sewage sludge. 2
