The demand for lithium may increase because of its potential use id lithium batteries and in the generation of electrical power by fusion. Therefore, lithium abundance in some United States oil-field brines was surveyed. Oil-field brines from numerous locations were found to contain more than 100 mg/l lithium and several exceeded 500 mg/l. An area of 25,000 km2, with a reservoir thickness of 60 m, an effective porosity of 5 percent, and a brine with a specific gravity of 1.2 containing 100 mg/l of lithium, contains about 0.75 x 106 tonnes (1 tonne = 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg) of lithium in 7.5 km3 of brine. It is postulated that the brines were enriched in lithium by lithium-rich spring water or lithium leached from volcanic rocks followed by evaporation sequences.

During the formation of most epithermal precious metal deposits geochemical changes can be characterized by the introduction of large amounts of silica, minor amounts of sulfur, and trace quantities of gold, silver, and other metals. During the same process, large amounts of alkalis and alkaline earth elements, such as sodium and calcium, and sometimes aluminum are removed from the rocks. In deposits hosted by carbonate sedimentary rocks large amounts of carbonate may be removed before or during the silicification process. Small amounts of iron may be introduced by the mineralizing solutions, however, in most epithermal deposits this may be a relatively immobile component and is locally derived. The results of these changes are deposits consisting of up to 90 to 95 percent silica as quartz veins, breccias, silicified host rocks, and jasperoids containing a few percent sulfides, mostly pyrite, and a few parts per million gold and silver. Other minerals commonly but not always present are barite, arsenic, antimony, or mercury sulfides, and tellurides. Often gold shows a spatial, and therefore an apparent genetic, relationship to pyrite in primary ores. Alteration and gangue assemblages sometimes include sericite and/or adularia, and parts of the deposits may contain alunite and/or clay minerals. Even though the value of these deposits usually lies in their gold content, silver is usually present in larger quantities than gold (Romberger, 1990). Based on these general characteristics observed in a large number of epithermal deposits, together with processes occurring in active geothermal areas to which they are often genetically linked (Henley, 1985), a model is proposed whereby deposition occurs along a subhorizontal zone separating environments of contrasting chemistries. The upper environment is characterized by oxygenated acid waters and the deeper environment by a reducing near neutral aqueous system. The model describes the chemical changes occurring as a result of mixing and/or boiling within this zone. It builds upon the physical models proposed by Romberger (1988a) for disseminated gold deposits and Bonham (1988; 1989) for volcanic rockhosted deposits.

The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating-drum reactor was studied. The reactor contained horizontal paddles on the inner wall for lifting the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested by bioleaching a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at a 50% pulp density with the drum operating at from 0.5 to 1.0 rpm. Attempts at bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density used in a conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows the process to operate at much higher pulp densities than conventional stirred-tank reactors. This results in improved bacterial activity because of better attrition control of the mineral particles.

Underground and surface mining operations produce gypsum from sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Silurian through. Jurassic. Although reserves tend to be limited at individual operating properties, potential resources are vast and future development will hinge principally on market growth and changing economic conditions. Most critical of the variables affecting the industry in both the short and long term will be the availability, type and cost of energy and both processing and distribution.

A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly-mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala Aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil, Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after 21 months of operation. Water quality in 15 specially-drilled monitoring wells has returned to the original quality level of the aquifer, and chloride concen¬trations in the pumping well have dropped to half the maximum level recorded thus far. Project results are very favorable and provide guidelines for initiation of similar undertakings in localities where needed.

The kinetics of froth flotation and the three-phase contact (TPC) parameters are studied at temperatures varying from 20°C to 40°C. The material floated consists of glass spheres and a quartz particles with various diameters. Dodecylamine hydrocloride (DDAHCI) is used as a collector. The equilibrium three-phase contact angle is measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Scheludko method. Using a Wilhelmy method, the temperature effect on the surface tension of the DDAHCI solution is determined. The formation of the thin film on a polished plate of vitreous silica and the expansion of TPC is monitored by means of a metallographic microscope and recorded on a attached camera at different temperatures. The experimental data show an intensification of the flotation kinetics at 30 and 40°C in the case of small particles. Such an intensification is not observed with the larger particles. The cause for intensification of the flotation kinetics is sought for in the dependence of the TPC rate of expansion and induction time on temperature.

Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.

The hydrodynamics of the leaching solution in leach heaps is known to be one of the important variables in the performance of the heap. The solution hydrodynamics are also important in the decommissioning of a heap where the aim is to flush out the residual dissolved metals and the remaining reagents. Chemical engineers have studied the hydrodynamics of "trickle bed" reactors for 40 years in an attempt to relate the performance of trickle bed reactors to flow conditions. Their work is reviewed with emphases on areas of similarity to heap leaching.

Fuzzy logic is well suited to the control of non-linear, time-varying, and/or any system for which it is difficult to obtain an exact mathematical model. To design a good fuzzy controller, a thorough understanding of the desired process behavior is required. Many papers have suggested that fuzzy controllers are robust. If they are, it is reasonable to explore whether or not they respond better than conventional controllers to errors in the feedback signal due to imperfect measurement or sensor degradation. It may be the case that simpler or less expensive sensors could be used in some processes. The research presented here relies on an integrated array of computer programs that model and simulate (1) the process to be controlled, (2) common feedback instrumentation, and (3) both fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's) and conventional controllers. Various types of feedback sensor imperfections are imposed upon the system, and the performance of the two controllers is compared. Each controller is tuned to its optimal performance in response to a setpoint change using perfect feedback measurement.

Since gold was first discovered in Colorado in the late 1850s' mining has been a major part of the state's economic history, according to Stanley Dempsey, chairman and chief executive officer of Denver- based Royal Gold Inc. While the mining industry has seen some lean times throughout the past century, it has always bounced back. Today, dozens of major gold companies are headquartered in the Denver area. The state's coal mines produced record amounts during 1996. And even some of Colorado's uranium mines are resuming production. Dempsey joined other speakers in addressing the state of Colorado's mining industry during the Colorado Mining Association's (CMA) National Western Mining Conference. Some 800 people attended the CMA meeting, held Feb. 2-5 in Denver. The meeting was the association's 100th since it was incorporated in 1897.

By-products are of greater importance in lead and zinc mining than in any of the other major base metals. While I think most mining people would accept that statement, you would probably get some widely varying estimates when attempting to quantify the value of by-products in lead and zinc mining. We are now able to do this with our lead-zinc mine cost model. This model was originally developed as a zinc mine cost model to help us forecast long-term zinc supply and price as part of a study we completed in late 1979 entitled "Zinc - The Next Decade". Before demonstrating the importance of by-product revenue to lead- zinc mines, let me first explain how the cost model was constructed. I will discuss the model as it was originally constructed - as a zinc mine cost model. It has subsequently been expanded to include lead only mines and now can Be run either as a zinc or a lead mine cost model.

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.

Design for economical operation, minimum operating labor and minimum maintenance for labor and supplies are virtually inseparable. Each consideration has a vital bearing on the other. Let us assume that we have the design complete for the most economical operation with a minimum of operating personnel. This means, in addition, that we have the fewest number of operating units consistent with the product requirements for a team or metallurgical coal which we are called on to produce. The number of units will vary greatly, being influenced by design, washability characteristics, tonnage and degree of quality control necessary by reason of producing a product for metallurgical, steam or domestic use. Elastomeric liner products have been used for over two decades in a wide variety of uses including pond liners, hazardous waste barriers, dam face rehabilitation and mining applications. Asphalt blended with polymers is enjoying renewed interest in the engineering community because of its durability, high yield attributes, fewer CQA steps due to seamless installation, and ease of installation and repair. As in other lining technologies, advancements in polymer chemistry and improvements in installation techniques have had dramatic impact on the quality of fluid-applied asphalt (FAA) membranes. Membrane 6, man­ufactured by Deery Oil, Inc. for over 16 years is a hot-applied polymer modified asphalt membrane that can be applied to a variety of substrates in a reinforced configuration or installed directly on an asphalt surface. By blending thermoplastic polymers with asphalt, very favorable stress/strain characteristics can be achieved (Chambers, 1980). Typically the membrane will yield under rel­atively low stress and also exhibit high elongation capability. In service applications where puncture resistance is a concern, fluid applied asphalt materials have the flexibility and com­pressive strength under heavy loading that leach pad designers may find attractive. Additional security is achieved if long term service life is important as in the case of radioactive waste con­tainment. The Department of Energy selected Membrane 6 over seamed liners for a surface barrier that must isolate and contain radioactive waste for 1000 years. Asphalt has a long history of use as a water-stop material and it is believed that this natural construction material combined with SBS polymers will per-form for a millennium. (Freeman, 1994) The process of installing Membrane 6 varies according to job size and the type of surface to be protected. Lining applica­tions on compacted substrates require the membrane to be applied to a scrim cloth (fig 1). Some early pioneers in FAA technology neglected this step and therefore never achieved per­formance levels that satisfied regulatory guidelines. The scrim provides a cohesive surface that promotes membrane flow while achieving high impermeability (2Xl0 '11).

The mining industry needs to assure compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). Congress has enacted this legislation with the intent of preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution of the nation' s surface and groundwaters. Recognized sources of pollution such as seepage from tailings ponds, waste dumps, and contaminated effluent from mine dewatering operations pose a serious threat to adjacent groundwaters. In addition, technological innovations being implemented by the industry such as in situ leaching of low grade ore deposits may also lead to ground- water contamination. An adequate monitoring methodology designed to meet the needs of the mining industry is needed. Monitoring and control methodology devised for other man- caused sources of ground- water pollution - e. g., landfills - offer considerable promise for adaptation to the problem. The prediction of deleterious effects on groundwater quality usually requires extensive geohydrological data in addition to a thorough analysis of the mining activity that is underway or projected. If the avail- able data are adequate, mathematical models of surface and groundwater flow can be constructed that will help to predict effects on water quality. Data are inadequate to allow a realistic interpretation of pollution potentials. These data can be supplemented by computer simulation as a method to explore a number of possible environmental effects and also to develop a minimum-cost approach to identifying and gathering the additional necessary supporting data. Incorrect assessment of the important environmental considerations may, in many instances, prove to be the weakest link in analyzing the financial feasibility of a mining operation.

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration, namely, nitrogen, air and oxygen on ball war was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. 'Marked ball grinding, tests along with electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen towards wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry-appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.
