In recent years, there have been many articles and papers written on the use of specially designed belt conveyor systems in mining operations, either economic studies or actual experience. These papers generally conclude that the use of these systems can reduce overall costs from 10% to 40% over conventional methods using general purpose equipment (truck/shovel, scrapers, etc.). However, they also generally conclude that conveyor systems are inflexible and capital intensive. With the increasing cost of mobile equipment, the capital cost conclusion is losing steam, particularly when the costs of maintenance shops, road and ramp construction and other related start-up costs are thrown in. Attention here will be focused on answers to flexibility related questions, but first, a look at costs in general. Basic production economics tell us that when we have a small job to do, it is cost effective to use simple, low cost, general purpose tools which will have a minimum impact on total cost. It also tells us that when we have a large project, we can employ methods using special, relatively expensive production tools. Figure 1 illustrates what occurs on projects, of different sizes, with various quantities of production. With small quantities of work, the cost per unit of work starts out much lower using general purpose equipment, rather than using special purpose methods and equipment. However, at a relatively low quantity of work, the cost hits a lower limit and, regardless of how great the quantity of work, the unit cost can never go any lower.

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

A generalized mathematical structure is proposed whereby internal species mass flows within a flotation network are defined uniquely by a matrix of enhancement factors. An element of the enhancement factor matrix is defined as the ratio of the mass flow of that species leaving a given cell in the concentrate to the species mass flow leaving the same cell in the tailings. To predict the enhancement factors, knowledge of flotation kinetics effects is required. Recently experimental data has become available relating to the performance of industrial flotation circuits which indicate that the discrete or discrete-distributed kinetic schemes are capable of reasonably effective simulations. These simulations show the importance of including froth effects. The prediction of performance of networks from small-scale batch tests on flotation streams shows that the model for the froth phase used in the simulations does not scale-up well and that aeration effects are also difficult to predict. The network analysis should be useful in differential flotation of complex ores and it is disappointing in this context that little information on the kinetics of activation and depression is available.

As part of its program to minimize mineral and metal needs, the Federal Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to determine the feasibility of producing foundry-sand-grade olivine concentrates from low-grade sources. Using a Bureau-patented attrition-grinding technique, concentrates meeting Steel Founder's Society of America (SFSA) specifications for loss on ignition (LOI) were prepared. Studies showed that green strengths and tensile strengths of the attrition-ground olivine were equivalent or superior to those of commercial materials. Metal-casting studies showed that molds of attrition-ground olivine produced better surface finishes. The improved surface finishes were attributed in part to increased grain sphericity.

The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

Optimization of the rock cutting performance plays a major role in the tunneling operation. For a given set of tool and cutting environment, rock fragments may be chipped away in numerous manners and it is crucial to understand and be able to predict the dynamics at the cutter-rock interface. This paper presents rational and realistic 3D finite element modeling of rock cutting where typical computational issues ?such as contact formulation, appropriate rock material response, mesh distortion, and crack propagation? are overcome. Cutting forces and failure mechanisms in this finite element analysis are successfully validated by laboratory single-cutter scratching tests in sandstone.

The trend toward development of large low grade ore bodies has accelerated in recent years. It has been estimated within the copper industry that "porphyry" type deposits will provide the bulk of copper production during the next 30 years. It is further estimated that in these deposits the average ore grade by the year 2000 will be 0.25% copper (1). Many of the new porphyry copper discoveries are of such extremely low grade that they are particularly sensitive to small fluctuations in cost variables and copper prices. Because haulage constitutes a major item of surface mining expense, the capability to transport large tonnages of material at increasingly lower unit costs is vital to the profitable operation of many of these mines. High capacity conveyor belts appear to have considerable promise in this area. The heaviest use of high tonnage conveyors has been in the brown coal industry in Germany. In the past 20 years several such installations have proven successful. In addition to the German installations, several other successful systems have been put into operation. Some examples are: The Oroville Dam project in the United States; the tar sand operation in Northwest Canada; the pre-mine stripping and mining of the Twin Buttes Mine in the United States; the Kursk Magnetite 'dine in the U.S.S.R.; and the Nchanga Copper Mine in Zambia. Most of the systems mentioned are handling alluvial material consisting mainly of fines. The noteworthy point regarding these installations is their high continuous capacity. One of the largest lignite mines in the world is at Fortuna, Germany, where over 15,700 tons (15,250mt) per hour of overburden is transported on an 87 inch (221cm) wide belt running, at over 1000 feet (305m) per minute.(2). Another example is a 20,000 ton (18,150mt) per hour system for loading iron ore into barges on the Great Lakes (3).

Large deposits of eudialyte, a low grade zirconium bearing mineral, occur on the Southern Coast of Greenland in the Ilimaussaq intrusion. Various processes were tested in the laboratory to recover eudialyte from these ores, including flotation, leaching, gravity and magnetic separation. A combination of dry and wet magnetic separations has the advantage of simplicity and the least environmental impact for the location. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory testwork to develop a two-stage treatment process to recover the eudialyte by magnetic separation.

Si define la simulación digital y las técnicas de simulación son revisadas. La metodologia tipica conlleva la selección de modelos, el ajuste o reajuste de los datos primarios, la selección de una estrategia de acoplamiento, la valoración de la precisión del modelo en un sentido estadistico, y el desarrollo de estructura de simulación ejecutiva. La simulación sirve de ayuda para los ingenieros de procesos para evaluar la viabilidad de un esquema de flujo propuesto y el efecto de la modificación de un flujograma ya existente. Por otro lado, la simulación juega un papel importante en la optimación "off-line" y en la evaluación de estrategias de control de circuitos alternativos. Son presentados varios ejemplos para ilustrar estas utilizaciones para la simulación, incluyendo aplicaciones en los circuitos de trituración, circuitos de molienda y circuitos de flotación. Es de opinión de los autores que, dentro de la próxima década, las plantas de proceso de minerales serán estudiadas rutinariamente a través de una simulación digital durante las etapas preliminares de diseño. La simulación constituirá un importante componente en la toma de decisiones de un proceso.

This chapter contains moderately detailed descriptions of some typical and well known mills that treat predominantly sulfide copper ores, some containing secondary values in gold, silver, and molybdenum. The descriptions are general in nature, because most of the specific data will be found in tabulations elsewhere in this section, covering a large number of mills in such matters as flotation reagents, crushing and grinding equipment and steel consumption, thickener and filter operating data, power consumption, and many others, in a manner that the reader will find convenient and comprehensive for reference and comparison. On the other hand, the plant descriptions selected for this chapter emphasize the kind of information that cannot be readily tabulated.

Topsoil for revegetation projects is in demand in many urban areas. In this case history, a large aggregate producer manufactured a topsoil from three waste materials. The topsoil was produced in a 200,000 m2 (50-acre) abandoned gravel pit that still had additional gravel under 10 m (30 ft) of overburden uneconomic to strip directly. The topsoil was produced by rotary mixing of sludge, overburden, and a lime admixture; solar drying; and stripping and stockpiling of the product. A major problem was an increase of topsoil drying times for stripping from 40 to over 100 hours when it was rewet by storms. The problem was solved by a research project that evaluated over 50 formulations and over 20 waste materials. . The final formula dried in 15 hours and contained 3-parts sandy mine spoil, 1-part sewage sludge, and 2 % spent-bed, a granular quick-lime produced during power-plant flue-gas desulfurization.

Sampling of respirable dust and analyses of samples have been partially completed for a longwall panel. Physical and compositional properties which have been characterized include: 1. Respirable mass concentration, 2. Mineral composition, 3. Particle size distribution by mineral, 4. Particle shape distribution by mineral, 5. Particle angularity distribution by mineral, and 6. Respirable size distribution. Analytical techniques used in the characterization of samples are described, and results are reported with emphasis placed on relationships between the various characteristics and worker locations. Details of existing mining conditions, equipment arrangements, dust control methods and operating system parameters are presented.

Alumina hydroxides such as gibbsite (Al(OH)3) and boehmite (AlOOH) are precursors of many types of alumina that find important industrial applications. The thermal decomposition of AlOOH, which is a more energy saving precursor compared to gibbsite, gives rise to the formation of ?-, d-, ?- and a-aluminas that are used for the production of catalysts. The applications of the aluminas are governed by their properties that are a function of the precursor material and its microstructure. The microstructure in turn is a factor of the method and conditions applied, as well as, in the case of soft chemical processes, on the anions present. Towards these ends, this study was focused on the effect of different anions on the physicochemical characteristics of the alumina hydroxides precipitated in the first 5 minutes after the perturbation of the stability of a supersaturated sodium aluminate solution (Bayer liquor).

The underground portion (about 10 km) of Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line consists of eight shield tunnels connected with Kawasaki Man-Made Island in between, at four underground locations. The connection work had to fulfill strict precision and safety requirements in the ground about 60 m below soft seabed, but was completed successfully in May 1997. This report describes the connection work in detail, featuring the method of investigating shield machines’ relative positions, ground freezing method and connection mechanism and procedures. It also mentions the present state of Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line that was put in service on December 18, 1997.

Cyprus Pima is a medium-sized open-pit copper mine located 35 km (22 miles) south of Tucson, AZ. The ore body was discovered using geophysical prospecting methods in 1953 and was originally worked as a small underground mine followed by small open-pit operations. As mining equipment grew larger and the economic ore grade dropped, the operation grew in size, through four expansions, to the present 50 500 tpd (56 500 stpd) milling rate. The remaining stripping ratio is about 2.5 to 1. Mining equipment includes 11 electric shovels ranging in size from 6 to 15 m3 (8 to 20 cu yd) and 42 diesel-electric haulage trucks ranging in size from 89 to 223 t (100 to 250 st). Mine planning is performed at Cyprus Pima to serve several functions. The most important is to plan ahead, one year at a time, to predict the ore grade and stripping requirements on a month-by-month schedule. This yearly plan is necessary for budget preparation and is revised once each quarter to incorporate variations in actual production experienced during the preceding quarter.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.

The STG integrated method of grouting can be divided into the several phases as outlined in preceding chapters. For convenience in describing technical procedures, they can be grouped as: 1. Investigations in non-geotechnical, exploration bore¬holes. 2. Drilling the holes necessary for geotechnical investiga¬tions and for grouting. 3. Conducting appropriate hydrogeologic tests in those holes and consequent calculations. 4. The preparation of a clay mortar. 5. The preparation of a clay-cement grout with additives. 6. The injection of the grout. 7. Checking the quality of the grout curtain. Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 are discussed below. These activities contain the procedural aspects of grouting. 7.1 DRILLING GROUT HOLES Grout holes belong to a very select class of drillholes. The necessary drilling equipment must enable the operator to drill the holes in inclined, twisting directions. In addi¬tion, the equipment must permit drilling under structurally and hydrogeologically complex conditions. The equipment must permit the operator to conduct specific testing activi¬ties in the drillholes. These activities include hydrodynamic analyses, flowmetric analysis, and the installation and re¬moval of deflectors, packers, grouting plugs, casings, lin¬ers, pumping facilities and other work. As explained in Chapters 5 and 6, the grouting of sat¬urated rock is conducted both through holes drilled from the surface and through holes drilled from the face of a shaft, drift, or tunnel. The drilling of grout holes from the surface can be carried out by an aggregate of equipment that can be the same equipment used for drilling exploration boreholes. Depending on the projected depth of the holes, the STG ZIF- 1200MR and ZIF-650 drilling rigs (or modifications of them) are used. The SKB-4, SKB-5 and SKB-7 high-output drilling rigs (workover rigs) have been used in recent years. The STG BMP-24 drilling rigs are used for carrying out the descent-lifting operations for drilling holes from the sur¬face. In a number of cases, the UKB-500C, URB-3AM and URB-2A power-fed drilling equipment is used for drilling holes from the surface. It should be noted that the drilling of grout holes usually requires an electric drive assembly. Drilling with diesel drive assemblies would be used only to preclude the possi¬bility of losing electric power during drilling operations. Turbine drilling would be used only for appropriate techni¬cal-economic reasons. The selection of the grout hole design is determined by the hydrogeological and structural geological conditions at the site as interpreted in Chapters 2 and 3. The design of grout holes must be as simple as possible in order to min¬imize costs. Hole design guidelines can be adopted as a basis for this purpose, unless site-specific conditions require otherwise. The mouth of the drillhole must be outfitted with a guide-pipe having a length of at least 2 m and an outside diameter from 219 to 234 mm. The upper part of the hole must be attached by a jig consisting of borehole casing that has a diameter ranging from 108 to 146 mm. The length of the jig h is determined by the equation [ ] where k = 1.1 to 1.2 is the load factor; P,, is the injection pressure of the grout into the mouth of the drillhole; D is the external diameter of the jig pipe; m = 0.6 to 0.7 is the work condition factor; T[ ].1 MPa is the bonding value of the rock cemented to the jig. The grout hole is drilled from the jig shoe to the de¬signed depth using a rock-crushing bit with a diameter of 93 mm or more. However in complex hydrogeological condi¬tions when the shaft intersects unstable rock, other hole designs can be used. The diameter of grout holes must permit an aggregate of investigations to be conducted in them using down-hole borehole geophysical and flowmetric logging instruments. It is necessary to cement the casing strings reliably in the grout holes, thereby permitting the injection of the grout under high pressure through the pres¬sure tight mouth of the borehole. Technological details for drilling grout holes such as the rotational rate of the drill bit, the axial load on the rock¬crushing bit, and the drilling fluid flow rate are optimized for the specific rock-hydrogeological conditions largely by experience. The hole diameter and type of rock crushing bit are important variables in these details of drilling. It is advisable to drill holes using water as the drilling fluid. However in those cases where the hole walls are unstable or under very high ground water pressure, the use of a well¬ engineered drilling mud should not be precluded. Unfortu¬nately, drilling mud can influence test results. When steeply dipping fractures with inclination angles of more than 60 to 70° are encountered, it is necessary to drill guided, inclined grout holes. Roof deterioration in weak moisture-sensitive rock leads to roof falls in coal mines. An observation site was set up in intake air at an underground coal mine in central Ohio to evaluate the time-dependent deterioration of moisture-sensitive roof rock. By periodically collecting and weighing the rock falling from the roof, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was able to quantify the deterioration of the moisture-sensitive shale roof. The measurements showed that more roof rock is falling in the dry winter months. Movements in an intersection were monitored in order to determine if deformation correlated with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. The rate of intersection roof-to-floor convergence was found to be cyclical and related to seasonal changes, with more convergence during the months of April through September. At the study site intersection, the roof beam did not show deflection indicating movement most likely due to mine floor deformation. The bolt load also increased in the warmer months before shedding load, possibly due to rock failure. Temperature and relative humidity sensors, placed in holes in the roof show that mine air does not mix with the air in the holes. Consistent saturation levels of relative humidity were measured in the holes and it appears that high levels of moisture may have migrated into the bolt holes from roof shales. A roof sealant applied to a portion of the test roof appears to be preserving the roof and reducing the amount of rock fall into the entry, while the screened area virtually eliminated rock falling from the roof.
