Rock mass properties testing for determining strength parameters is an integral part of geomechanics. These tests are performed either in a laboratory environment or in a field (in-situ). The authors share their experience in using numerical modelling in simulating the laboratory test procedures. This approach helps studying the rock breakage and failure mechanism more efficiently and provides a high degree of visualization. Moreover, imperfections and discontinuities can be easily incorporated in these models. This capability of providing arbitrary fractures and discontinuities facilitates in building a large knowledgebase of rock strength and failure mechanisms. This knowledgebase may then be used to generate heuristics for determining rock strengths for rock mass with fractures and discontinuities.

Flotation control systems in use around the world today owe their effectiveness to the coordinated use of appropriate sensors, control hardware, and decision-making strategies. This paper traces the development of these three main elements of the "control triangle" over time. Based on an analysis of recent developments, it is concluded that improvements occurring in instrumentation have basically been evolutionary, while advances in hardware and strategies have, in contrast, been revolutionary. An attempt is made to extrapolate developments in each of the "control triangle" elements into the future in order to make a projection concerning flotation control systems for the next millenium.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. INTRODUCTION he most important information required for the engineering design of structures in rock is its inherent rock properties. Without providing adequate parameters on the rock property, high quality of the engineering design cannot be expected. Many laboratory rock testing methods have been developed, but they are mostly for testing intact homogeneous rock without appreciable discontinuities. In reality, the intact rock properties do not represent the behavior of rock masses because rock masses include irregularities such as joints, cracks, interlayers, variations in mineral compositjon, etc. In general the type and intensity of the rock defects may be much more important than the type of rock which will be encountered (Terzaghi, 1977; Bieniawski, 1984). In-situ rock testing can provide better information on rock parameters, but it takes a tremendous amount of effort, time and cost. In recent years, numerical modeling techniques are gaining popularity as a design tool for structures in rock bodies due to the enormous progress in computer technology (Wang, 1985; Kripakov and Melvin, 1983; Park and Ash, 1985), but it is quite dangerous to use numerical techniques without having proper input data. Bieniawski (1984) states as follows: Some design methods such as numerical techniques have outpaced our ability to provide the input data necessary for the application of these methods. In order to provide an adequate amount of input data, an extensive testing program may be required, thus major efforts in time and expenses are commonly spent, In this paper, a new rock testing method, which utilizes the principles of laser holographic interferometry, is introduced. This method requires only a few minutes to measure the modulus of elasticity and quality of a rock core sample, which does not have to be cut or ground. The Poisson's ratio can also be measured in a few minutes from a sliced rock specimen. HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY Principles of Holographic Interferometry In 1948, Gabor invented holography, which is the technique of reviving three dimensional images using a monochromatic light source. A full demonstration was not made then because a clean monochromatic light source was not available. Later, in the early 19601s, the laser was adopted as a monochromatic and coherent light source (Leith and Upatnieks, 1963). Since then, applications have been made in many different fields ranging from crime prevention to three dimensional television. In this technique, an image is usually recorded by means of constructing a hologram which is a record of the interference pattern formed on a high resolution photographic system as shown in Figure I. A beam splitter divides the laser beam into two beams: (1) an object beam which is expanded while passing through a beam expander and illuminates the object, and (2) a reference beam which is expanded and illuminates the holographic plate. Subsequent to an exposure, the holographic plate is developed and illuminated by the expanded reference beam. The original scene of the object is revived in a three-dimensional image. The entire instrument should be placed on a vibration free environment. The wave fields reflected by the object in two slightly different configurations can be superimposed to form an interference fringe pattern. Thus, it is possible to measure the displacement that took place between the two configurations. This method is called holographic interferometrv. There are two methods of achieving this phenomena. The first is the double exposure method, wherein two exposures of the object are made prior to developing the film. "Plutonic-related" gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As- (Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of the depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton. These associations have been used successfully in exploration. Results from several analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations. Gold and bismuth have paired mineralogy at high temperatures and, thus, are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 t/h (2,200 stph) of low-grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines that feed four bulk-flotation banks with a scavenger-concentrate regrind mill und a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk-flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grude in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent- addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population-balance model that estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer that computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module that implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over a period of three months. The model-based expert optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5%, and an optimized bulk-concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

A process has been developed for recovering the refractory metal values contained in mixed secondary source materials such as contaminated grinding wastes, oxides and sludges. The wastes are calcined with sodium carbonate in air to convert the refractory metals to water soluble Na2CrO4, Na3V04, Na2Mo04 and Na2W04. The base metals, Fe, Ni, Co and Cu, are converted to water insoluble oxides. An aqueous leach of the calcine effectively separates the refractory metals from the insoluble base metals. Co, Ni and Cu can be recovered from the oxidic residue by conventional processing methods. The leach solution is purified and then treated to recover the refractory metals as Cr203, NH4VO3, (NH4)6Mo7024?4H2O and H2WO4. The purity of the products is sufficient for their use in many metallurgical applications. The Na+ values in the leach solution are recovered as Na2CO3(or NaHC03) and are recycled to the calcination step. It is shown that the process can accommodate a wide range of feed compositions and generates a minimum of aqueous effluents.

A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

Vibratory hand-tools can produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This disease, often called Vibration White Finger, can cause varying levels of hand-arm discomfort and, in severe cases, impairment. In addition to the human suffering, there are also significant economic repercussions for industry. These include reduced operator efficiency, lost time through increased absenteeism and increasing compensation awards. In the mining industry, jackleg rock drills are a particularly troublesome source of hand vibration exposure. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. This paper details the results of a study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered ("cushioned") handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicate that, for a particular cushioned design, the overall acceleration level experienced at the hand-handle interface can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It is also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz, with performance improving with increasing frequency. Qualitative evaluation of the cushioned handles by the drill operator indicates a significant increase in comfort over the standard steel handle.

CURD started producing pellets in 1969, with one two-million ton straight grate plant. In the beginning of April '73, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million TPY of pellets. In January '77, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million TPY. For the present year 3 more units, 3 million each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience is given about the use of different binders and additives. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy the market requirements. The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCI. Precipitation of the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

The use of paste tailings as underground backfill and for surface disposal is rapidly expanding, and with it comes the requirement to understand and predict its long-term environmental stability. This paper presents the results from a kinetic testing study performed on cemented tailings paste mixtures under both subaqueous and subaerial conditions. In addition, the effects of grainsize reduction are investigated. It will be demonstrated that the long-term weathering behavior of tailings paste is controlled by its physical and chemical characteristics, as well as its placement conditions. The testing indicates that subaqueous disposal of paste inhibits acid generation, whereas the exposed samples produced acidic leachate despite the presence of cement added to meet geotechnical requirements.

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

The choice of fragmentation method is one of the most fundamental aspects of mine design, and often has a major impact on the safety and economic viability of an operation. Almost exclusively, underground mining operations rely on either mechanical excavation or drill and blast techniques to extract rock. Each of these fragmentation methods has distinct advantages and disadvantages, and each is appropriate, and economic, for different mining conditions. However, the choice of fragmentation method can have a pronounced effect on the amount of damage created in the rock mass surrounding the opening. This paper reviews a number of case studies where both mechanical excavation and traditional drill and blast were used in underground mines. Ground support requirements in the mechanically excavated areas are compared to the support requirements in the blasted sections in order to demonstrate the potential safety and cost benefits of the various fragmentation methods.

The bulk of the ore found in the Lihir Island deposit is refractory in nature, with the gold contained in auriferous pyrite. In support of an evaluation of the development of this deposit by Kennecott (a wholly owned subsidiary of RTZ) and Niugini Mining Ltd., testwork has been carried out at the Sherritt Research Centre to demonstrate the amenability of the Lihir ore to pressure oxidation pretreatment to liberate the refractory gold. The results of pilot plant treatment of the Lihir ore in a continuous circuit with a feed rate of between 10 and 30 kg/h ore are described. The integrated circuit comprised pressure oxidation, residue washing, and gold recovery from the washed residue by carbon in leach or carbon in pulp cyanide leaching. Significant factors affecting gold recovery included temperature and retention time in the pressure oxidation step, and the concentration of soluble chloride in the feed. Gold extraction from well washed ore, after oxidation at 210°C for 66 minutes in the autoclave, was typically between 94 and 96%, compared with less than 30% by direct cyanidation.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. Bisbee and Ajo Study It turned out to be a busy half year, in addition to many good times with my Bisbee friends. Following the recession of 2001, restrained consumer spending, declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output, and increased unemployment led to a lack-luster year in the domestic economy. In 2002, the U.S. real gross domestic product (GPD) grew only 2.4%. Significant production declines in the U.S. metals industry were registered by copper, lead and zinc producers. Steel producers, despite a slight improvement in shipments, continued to face strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. Homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors— major consumers of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above 2001 levels. A strong U.S. dollar relative to other national currencies continued to weaken the competitive stance of U.S. metal and non-metal mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

The Henderson molybdenum mine, near Empire, CO, has operated since 1976 using a panel caving process and a rail haulage transportation system. After two decades of service, the rail haulage system required a substantial capital expenditure to improve operations. The timing for this worked well because Henderson was able to combine this capital need into a mine plan that addressed process bottlenecks and current mining practices as a new production level was designed and developed. This process was a logical step, following an equipment upgrade program, and became known as the Henderson 2000 project. One of the key components of Henderson 2000 is a new ore transportation system. Throughout Henderson&apos;s life, the bottleneck has been the rail haulage system. Henderson staff evaluated several transportation alternatives and decided on a truck haulage configuration feeding an underground crusher and conveyor system. This configuration will eliminate the haulage bottleneck and will allow the mine to increase capacity. The installation of this system will be completed by the year 2000. The second key component of Henderson 2000 is the development of a new 7175 production level to extract the lower reserves of the ore body. Henderson staff benchmarked other caving operations and compared their mining practices to Henderson&apos;s basic mining guidelines. It became apparent that Henderson&apos;s practices could become more efficient, particularly in the areas of drawpoint spacing and column heights. These concepts were incorporated into the layouts
