The primary objective of most comminution operations is liberation; however, mill performance is generally quantified in terms of particle size. Only recently has the use of image analysis equipment made it possible to quantify mill performance on the basis of liberation. In this investigation, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of mill operating parameters on the liberation of sphalerite from a sphalerite/dolomite ore. The parameters studied included mill rotational speed, mill loading and ball size. The results of this work appear to indicate that sphalerite liberation is improved under conditions that promote impact breakage, while dolomite breakage is enhanced under attrition conditions.

Shotcrete is a versatile and widely utilized rock support material in mining and civil engineering projects due to its adaptability, strength, and efficient application. It immediately stabilizes rock surfaces, effectively controlling loose materials and preventing rockfalls in underground excavations. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing data from observations of nozzlemen (shotcrete sprayers) during primary ground support activities in an underground mine. The study highlights the importance of nozzlemen’s skills in ensuring the quality of shotcrete application, which is critical for underground mining operations’ structural integrity and safety. A comprehensive training program and field support were implemented to enhance the nozzlemen’s proficiency. The training set covered theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to improve shotcrete application daily. Proficiency improvement was assessed using quantitative metrics, with rebound percentages decreasing by 5–14% as nozzleman competency increased. The results of this initiative showed significant improvements in shotcrete quality, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and fewer reworks or rehabilitations. The findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of best practices in shotcrete application and nozzlemen training, ultimately enhancing ground support application measures in the mining industry.

An evaluation was performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, WY. A 1.52 m-diam (5 ft-diam), 37.3-kW (50-hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated about 31.4 m3/s (66,578 cfm) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of about 20% of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 610 m (2000 ft) and 1829,m (6000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF6 tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

This 1988 survey provided a cross section of computer software use by the US coal industry. From 1250 mailed questionnaires, 171 responses were received, representing a 4.9% sampling of the 3496 US coal mines. Since the distribution of responses by regional stratum matched well with the distribution of mines by stratum, the survey was given statistical validity. A statistical description details the computer use by region, mining type, organizational size, the level of application within the organization, the type of software application used, the variety of computers on which the software was used and the percent of users within engineering, management and general applications categories. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers at some level in their organizations. All of the mines producing more than 454 kt/a (500,000 stpy) used computers. However, for those producing more than 9 kt/a (10,000 stpy) but less than 91 kt/a (100,000stpy), only 44% used computers. Generally, the software applications were still data-processing oriented. The application sophistication grew with increasing mine size. Computer system models and configurations for different sized organizations are recommended based on the configurations used in the industry at the time of the survey.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

Direct digestion of phosphate ores by the acid-alcohol method offers improved leaching selectivity for the exclusion of iron and aluminum in the product acid. The leaching kinetics of this process will have a major role in the eventual application of this technology. The Bureau of Mines investigated apatite dissolution to determine the reaction rate and mechanisms of the leaching kinetics. The dissolution kinetics were monitored on various sized fractions of pure apatite. The "shrinking-core" kinetics model was applied to the data to determine the rate controlling mechanisms. For each size fraction, the initial reaction rate was controlled by the dissolution reaction. After an hour the dissolution rate slowed indicating a diffusion controlled reaction caused by the formation of calcium sulfate hemi-hydrate coating on each particle. For complete dissolution of the apatite, the phosphate rock should be ground to near 10 µ m size.

Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

The McCoy/Cove mine is located 48 km (30 miles) south of Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA, in the Fish Creek Mountains at an elevation of 1548 m (5080 ft), see Figure 1. Joseph H. McCoy first discovered gold at this location in 1914. This discovery led to the Gold Dome Mine which produced the first gold from this area in 1928. After the Gold Dome era, the land remained relatively dormant until Houston oil and Minerals Corporation purchased the claims from the Summa corporation and defined an ore body at the present day McCoy pit. In 1986 Tenneco Minerals (formerly Houston oil and Minerals corporation), sold the McCoy mine and adjoining claims to Echo Bay Minerals corporation. The Cove ore body was discovered soon after the sale to Echo Bay. Echo Bay expanded the heap leach operation and built the present mill which began processing ore in the fall of 1989.

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been focused on developing mill liners to increase wear resistance, improve grinding efficiency and reduce energy consumption in milling applications. The installation of an appropriate mill liner is critical as it affects the overall cost and product quality. A mill liner has two specific functions. The first is to protect the mill shell and mill ends from direct contact with the abrasive grinding media (in this case, the liner serves as a wear surface). The second function is to transport the grinding media, creating energy for size reduction. The liner acts as a lifter, mechanically transporting and cascading the grinding media. The mill lining is a major cost in the milling operation. The costs associated with the mill lining include the capital cost of the lining, downtime required to replace the worn liner and the labor for installation. Generally, in hard rock mining, the life of a mill liner in secondary ball mills is 12 to 24 months.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

The intersection of joint sets and excavation planes leads to removable blocks which can be expected to fall or slide. The amount and cost of supports required to stabilize these blocks of excavation are related to the number and dimensions of key blocks, the mechanical properties of joints and the active forces present. In this work, the application of the block theory in the study of the kinematics and stability of removable blocks is investigated considering any number of sliding faces for some Egyptian limestone quarries.

Much is known of the geography of the Alpine orogeny because it has now ended and all geosynclines are in their terminal, cordilleran form. The principle of sea floor spreading, continental drift, and mantle cells has gained general acceptance, but the number and position of the cells, even during the Alpine orogeny, is controversial. The oceanographers have demonstrated the uprises and in this paper it is suggested that downflows are marked by island arcs in the oceans and geosynclines (now cordillera) in the continents, for a total of about a dozen cells. Major mineral deposits associated-with the Alpine downflows are porphyry copper, molybdenum, nickel, chrome, lead-zinc-silver, gold, mercury, tungsten, and tin. Amore precise environment is known for some of these metals, for example, nickel, chrome, and mercury in flysch (which flanks mantle downturns), Ten major orogenies have taken place from 3500 m.y. to the present, Their re¬construction and metallogenesis is the subject of a continuing study.

The need for reliable and adaptable underground mine communications has become a focal point for both the safety and logistics of a mining operation. New mine communication technology aims to connect personnel, equipment, and data together while setting up a network that can be utilized during normal operations and also in an emergency event. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) requires mine operators to establish post-accident, two-way communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking for all mine personnel. Communications systems must be designed such that they can survive major mine accidents, including explosions, fires, inundations and ground falls. Typical, wire-bound communication technologies are vulnerable because wires are often destroyed in such accidents. Wireless technologies that work well on the surface, such as cellular telephone networks; have limited applicability underground because the wireless signals do not propagate through rock.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings. Rische and Hook discovered the Little Pittsburg (often spelled Pittsburgh) Mine and made Tabor an instant millionaire. Tabor once purchased a "salted" mine, the Chrysolite; but instead of considering it a bad deal, he further developed the property and struck rich silver ore. Later, Tabor purchased the Matchless Mine for $117,000, possibly the only investment he made without partners. During its peak years, the Matchless yielded $1 million worth

Through a regimen of process control and documentation, routine audits and a commitment to quality management, this kaolin producer is a competitive pigment supplier in a worldwide market. Background In 1987, the International Organization for Standards developed the ISO 9000 quality management system. This series of standards is used as a means to ensure customers that a quality management system is in place. Certification of a company does not mean that an individual product is of high quality. Rather, it demonstrates a supplier's ability to meet its customers' product and service needs. It also shows that a company has documented records to assure product consistency. The ISO 9000 system was begun in England during the early 1980s. During the mid-1970s, the British manufacturing industry was experiencing low quality. In an attempt to boost quality standards, the British government established the BS 5750 standards system. In 1987, BS 5750 was incorporated into ISO 9000. The ISO 9000 series consists of three levels of certification. ISO 9001 is the model for quality assurance in "design/development, production, installation and servicing." This standard applies to companies that rely on research and development to bring products that frequently change to market. ISO 9002 involves "production and installation" only. This standard is relevant to industries that produce a specific product according to specifications - either their own or their customer's. ISO 9003 is the model in "final inspection and test." This standard is the least detailed of the 9000 series. It is also the most applicable to companies that purchase, inspect or sort and resell. The quality system requirements for certification are outlined in the 18 elements of ISO 9002. These include: 4.1 - Management responsibility. 4.2 - Quality systems. 4.3 - Contract review. 4.4 - Design control. 4.5 - Document and data control. 4.6 - Purchasing. 4.7 - Control of customer-supplied product. 4.8 - Product identification and traceability. 4.9 - Process control. 4.10 - Inspection and testing. 4.11- Control of inspection, measuring and test equipment. 4.12 - Inspection and test status. 4.13 - Control of nonconforming product. 4.14 - Corrective and preventive action. 4.15 - Handling, storage, packaging, preservation and delivery. 4.16 - Control of quality records. 4.17 - Internal quality audits. 4.18 -Training. Continuous improvement, though implied in maintaining these requirements, could potentially be included in the quality system requirements in the next revision. Large mining companies use a number of sophisticated analytical techniques for introducing the element of risk into the valuation of mineral reserve sites. These methods include, but are not limited to, sensitivity analysis, computer simulation, conditional probability, and portfolio theory. Such techniques enable the managements of these large companies to have an awareness of the many possible ramifications of their investment decisions. On the other hand, small mining companies and individuals in the mining business, due to limited financial and technical resources, still rely primarily on single point estimates of the value of mineral reserves. These small miners introduce the aspect of risk only through the application of an appropriate "speculative" discount rate. This paper illustrates the application of a technique for the introduction of risk into investment analysis. The method appears to be most suitable for use by small mining companies and individuals contemplating a large investment in a new mineral reserve site.

Fifteen samples of chert from seven localities in Ohio were tested for potential durability and reactivity in concrete. The tests determined are porosity, pore-size distribution, relative degree crystallinity, specific surface area, and degree of dissolution according to the ASTM C289-71, Potential Reactivity of Aggregates, Chemical Methods. The results of these tests were compared with petrographic, electron optical, physical-chemical, and engineering properties of the chert samples. Based on these tests, the important properties that affect the durability and reactivity of chert in concrete were observed to be: (1) porosity, (2) pore-size distribution or pore spectra, (3) relative degree of crystallinity, (4) grain size, (5) specific surface area, (6) impurities, and (7) amount and species of quartz present-all of which are functions of original composition, time (geologic age), depth of burial, tectonics, and diagenesis. Preliminary results of this study indicated that the geologic history and physical-chemical properties of chert vary from one sample to another, and any one or combination of these parameters affect the performance of the chert in concrete. These complex interrelationships are difficult to ascertain; if the performance of the chert in concrete is to be predicted, it is necessary to study in detail this enigmatic material.
