This paper presents the process methods of beneficiating various copper-cobalt and copper-zinc ores mined by Gecamines in Zaire. Geology and mineralization of both sedimentary and vein type deposits are described with special emphasis on the production of oxide, dolomitic and sulfide concentrates. Description of different types of concentrators and their treatment methods are discussed for the production of sulfide, oxide and dolomitic concentrates. Production of concentrates, their consumption and stocks are briefly reviewed. Modernization of the concentrators with substantial investments on grinding, classification, flotation methods and tailings treatments are also discussed to improve the metallurgical efficiency of the concentrators with a view to improve the production of concentrates both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Imagine . . . an operatorless drill moving around a blast pattern drilling off rounds in record times ... a satellite-based positioning system and drill data combining to report diggability to a shovel operator based on the position of his shovel in a blast ... a driverless truck warning central dispatch of an impending mechanical problem and being reassigned to the shop ... an infrared detector diagnosing the problem, for which the mine management system generates a maintenance work order and, once the problem is corrected, re-dispatches the truck to the optimum shovel.

A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

The percentage of exploration dollars flowing out of the industrialized countries continues at an all-time high, and this shift in risk money is justified (Samuels, 1990; Bosson, 1977). Clearly, the odds of discovery are greatly enhanced if exploration is pursued in an untrampled and geologically more prospective environment. Unfortunately, such major unexplored areas of the developed world are shrinking rapidly, not just because the lands have already been tested, but primarily because they have been withdrawn from exploration. Experience, however, has shown that foreign investment is not without risks. These include problems that result from working in isolated areas, a lack of infrastructure, untrained workers and an absence of a solid geological data base. While the likelihood of once-feared expropriation is now low, mining enterprises still must take precautions to gain the support of their constituencies, including a variety of governments (local, provincial and central), workers, environmentalists, cultural organizations and local landowners. Is foreign exploration worth the risk? In most cases, Yes! But maintaining tenure and long-term success in a less developed country is only likely with good planning and the use of appropriate safeguards. These include measures such as buying country-risk insurance, building multinational relationships, forming joint investments, developing a broad customer base and seeking local investors in the company (Cobbe, 1979). The primary theme of this lecture is: How a company handles its constituency is critical to long-term tenure in a foreign country. Ideally, a multinational mining company would be so effective in dealing with the local people and managing its relationship with the host government that it would become a preferred employer, preferred over its competitors and over local companies. Historical overview Our earliest ancestors lived in Africa three to four million years ago. The Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, about 500,000 years ago, marked the beginning of mining in its earliest form (Gregory, 1980; Wolf, 1984). Various types of rocks and stones were used for tools and weapons, with flint being the preferred resource for implements. Initially, these materials were collected as stones (eoliths) lying on the surface. Then they came from excavations of flint in limestone beds that were exposed in river banks or naturally occurring excavations. Later, more formal mining developed. No doubt tribes of the Old Stone Age experienced conflict over rights to eoliths, food and land. The question of who owns the land and has rights to its contents and what is fair value for extraction is still the subject of intense debate and, occasionally, open conflict. As time passed, the search for useful minerals required migration from one area to another. Later, voyages from Europe to the New World and travels to other remote regions were funded and supported by absentee investors, kings and such (Rogers, 1976). The primary objective of such funding was to obtain gold, silver, food stuffs and other commodities that could be collected from the new countries. This is still the objective of foreign investment.

Current scrubber capacities vary from 1.89 to 4.72 m3/s (4,000 to 10,000 cfm), and there is interest in using scrubbers with capacities up to 6.61 m3/s (14,000 cfm). This paper describes research to compare the effectiveness of blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems using high-capacity scrubbers with flows up to 6.61 m3/s. Tests were conducted in a surface ventilation gallery with exhaust and blowing systems operating under similar conditions. The mining machine was equipped with a machine-mounted scrubber. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face and measured at several face locations. Effectiveness of exhausting and blowing systems was compared by determining average face methane concentrations. For each operating condition tested, blowing ventilation was more effective than exhausting for controlling face methane levels. Raising scrubber flow to 6.61 m3/s reduced methane levels for both blowing and exhausting systems.

Turkey has important celestite reserves in Sivas. These reserves have gypsum and/or calcite as gangue minerals. Celestite-calcite ore cannot be concentrated by gravity methods due to the low efficiency of gravity methods in fine sizes. Research was tried to concentrate celestite to a market grade by flotation. Parameters such as pH, particle size, dosage and types of collector and depressant were examined. Cyanamid A-845 and Na-oleate combination as collector, sodium silicate as depressant, and Aerofroth-65 as frother were found as the optimum flotation reagents. By applying 3-stage cleaning, a concentrate assaying 95,34 % SrS04 was obtained with 84,93 % recovery.

Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The most recent TBM used is for the Blitz Project, where a 5.5m (18ft) diameter main beam unit, commissioned in Q3 2012, is being utilized to drive a 6,975m (22,500 ft) ventilation and haulage level East of the Stillwater Mine for the Blitz expansion project. The assembly/commissioning of the TBM, institution of the planned diamond drilling program, application of ground control systems, and the current tunneling metrics will be covered.

Introduction The impact of computers on individuals and businesses increases each day. And the mining industry is no exception. The growing number of short courses, symposia, and feature articles in journals on the subject of computers is indicative of the developments and interest in their application to mining. Given this interest and the growing importance of computers, a legitimate concern is the computing background of graduating mining engineers. Based on a sample survey, this paper presents the current status of computer education in Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET)-accredited mining engineering programs in the US. Specific topics addressed include hardware and software available to students, integration of computers into curricula, concerns of mining educators, and historical and anticipated trends in computing education. Methodology Nine of the 19 ABET accredited mining engineering schools (as published in the SME-AIME Guide to Minerals Schools) were surveyed. Interviews consisting of open-ended questions were conducted with a knowledgeable faculty member from each of these schools. This was done to obtain an overall view of computing in mining engineering programs. The intent was not to evaluate nor compare individual schools, so a complete census was deemed unnecessary. The minimal deviations between the responses to the subjective questions reinforces the credibility of the sample as being representative. Results Hardware Most of the mining engineering schools polled had access to hardware on three scales - mainframe computers available university wide, minicomputers available in the college or department, and microcomputers available at all three levels. Without exception, each school had access to mainframe and microcomputers. Minicomputers, however, were not available at every school. The mainframe computers have been in place the longest. The predominant mainframe currently on campuses is the IBM model. Mainframes were once the essence of all applications. But the improved availability and capabilities of smaller machines have afforded users a viable alternative. The increasing practice in education of assessing charges for time used on the mainframe - as opposed to no charge for time on the mini- and microcomputers - makes use of the smaller machines attractive. Conversely, much of the mining engineering software is only operational on mainframes. Sometimes this restriction exists because the requisite speed or storage inherent in the software can only be met by the mainframe. More often, however, it is because the software was developed when mainframes were the only machines available, and it has not yet been adapted to run on a smaller machine. At the schools polled, many mining engineering problems that are well suited to microcomputers are being solved on mainframes simply because microcomputer software is not available. Minicomputers are available at the department or college level in many mining programs. DEC is the most popular make. Often, the minicomputers were installed to alleviate the inconveniences of attempting to access and use an overcrowded mainframe, to avoid being charged for time used on the mainframe, and to meet the needs of a specific research project. The minicomputers are currently used much more for research than for teaching applications. Therefore, minis are seldom used by undergraduate students. Microcomputers have become extremely popular at mining schools within the last five years. Generally, some form of computing policy or strategy was established near the time the first microcomputers were purchased. This was formulated in part to ensure consistency, or at least compatibility, in the type of machines acquired. Using the newly developed and permitted explosive Pentadyne-HP (Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd., Hyderabad), the Blasting Department of the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad experimented at the GDK-5 Incline, RG-1 Area of the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) to establish one modified angular cut blasting pattern as an alternative to conventional solid blasting in India to obtain longer pull, as well as to achieve at least 40 t of coal in a single blast round for the deployment of diesel load-haul-dump units at the face. This permitted explosive satisfied the statutory requirements of incendivity characteristics applicable to P5 explosives of the regulatory agency Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) of India. The present paper summarizes the development of this new blasting pattern and its possible use in Indian coal mines.

Introduction The Afton property is located 290 km (180 miles) by air east-northeast from Vancouver and 14 km (8.7 miles) west of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people, in south central British Columbia, Canada. The mine is adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 670 m (2198 ft) above sea level. The ore body is a porphyry copper deposit that has undergone supergene alteration. The major economic minerals in the supergene zone are native copper and chalcocite with chalcopyrite and bornite in the hypergene areas. The grade is 1% with an overall copper distribution - 70% native, 25% chalcocite, and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite and covellite. The ore also contains important but variable amounts of gold and silver. The mill was designed to treat 6350 t/d (7000 stpd). Semiautogenous grinding was selected to minimize capital cost and because of the expected high clay content of the ore, which would have caused problems in a conventional crushing and screening plant. Test work indicated that a recovery of 87% was possible in a circuit incorporating both flotation and gravity separation. Flowsheet Run-of-mine ore is crushed in a 1.06 x 1.65-m (3.5 x 5.4-ft) Allis Chalmers gyratory crusher set at 228.6 mm (9 in.), closed side setting. The surge pocket, below the crusher, is emptied by a Hydrastroke feeder onto number one conveyor, which discharges onto a 180,000-t (198,416-st) coarse ore stockpile. Six Hydrastroke feeders on two conveyors withdraw the crushed material from the bottom of the pile. These two conveyors, in turn, discharge onto the belt feeding the semiautogenous mill. The live storage in the stockpile is approximately 22,000 t (24,250 st), sufficient for three days' mill feed. Primary grinding is accomplished in an 8.5-m (28-ft) diam by 3.7-m (12-ft) long Koppers (Hardinge Cascade) mill (Fig. 1) containing a 10% ball charge and driven by a 4000-kW dc variable speed motor. The mill dis¬charge is pumped by a 10 x 12 G.I.W. pump to a 1.22 x 4.88-m (4 x 16-ft) stationary screen sloped at 20°. Screen oversize returns to the semiautogenous mill (SAM), and the undersize flows by gravity to the ball mill discharge pump box. Secondary grinding is performed in a 5-m (16.4-ft) diam by 8.84-m (29-ft) Koppers overflow ball mill driven by a 3430-kW synchronous motor through an air clutch. The mill is in closed circuit with a Krebs Cyclopac containing 10 635-mm (25-in.) cyclones and the cyclone overflow, at 35% solids and 65% to 70% -200 mesh, is flotation feed. In order to limit the buildup of native copper, circulating in the secondary grinding circuit, a portion of the underflow from the cyclones is processed in a circuit containing screens, cyclones, and shaking tables to produce a finished metallic copper concentrate. Primary mill variable speed drive The overall waste to ore ratio at Afton was 4.5:1. The mining was to be done with only three shovels, which meant that it was highly unlikely that more than one of them would be in ore at any one time. The resulting inability to blend the mill feed made it impossible to prevent wide swings in the grade and grindability. The variable speed do drive motor installed on the semiautogenous mill was selected because of the extreme variability of the Afton ore body. This variability has persisted throughout the lifetime of the mine. There are times, however, when due to ore conditions, the mill is operated at full speed (78% of critical) for extended periods of several shifts duration. There are other times when the mill speed may be changed several times in a 12-hour shift due to changing ore conditions. When ore is processed that contains a fairly large proportion of fine native copper, the primary mill speed and, consequently, the tonnage may be reduced to improve the secondary grind and to maintain an acceptable grind and recovery. High clay ores require less mill speed and more dilute grinding densities. In the latter case, the slower primary mill speed also helps to minimize damage to the mill liners. Approximately 57% of the time the mill operates between 90% and 100% of full speed or between 71% and 78% of critical. The variable speed is also used for inching during mill relines.

ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. Finely processed industrial minerals in "powdered" form have long been utilized by the plastics, paint, rubber, paper, ceramics, and adhesives industries as fillers, extenders, coatings and special additives. These minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide, and the like, have provided economic, uniform and consistent base materials which have, in turn, been used by the referenced industries to manufacture quality products. The focus of this paper will be the development of equipment and systems at ABB Raymond for the dry processing of such non-metallic minerals in order to meet what have become increasingly stringent requirements of the producers of these minerals. Changes in these requirements seem to have been accelerating rapidly during the last ten years, and it is expected this process will continue into the 1990's.

Most analysts find that progress has been evolutionary in any technologic field. To be sure, a few discrete breakthroughs can usually be identified, but viewed in its entirety, the curve of technologic progress over time tends to be relatively smooth with few discontinuities. Even in those cases where a major scientific discovery is achieved, the rate of technologic progress is limited by the often surprisingly slow rate of commercializing the concept into usable products. Whereas discovery and invention tend to be discrete events, technical innovation is often a painfully slow process. In spite of overall gradual change, technologic progress in most fields, when viewed in retrospect, tends to reveal certain relatively homogeneous periods where little change is evident, separated by episodes of accelerated progress. Thus, open-pit mining over the past century has changed from predominately train haulage to truck haulage and is now experiencing a major increase in belt haulage. Ore reserve estimation is another field that fits the same pattern, and the history of mine evaluation lends itself to a similar analysis. Evaluating mine investment opportunities is a fascinating aspect of mining. The unique set of risks inherent to every mining project is particularly intriguing. Geologic risks are most obvious, since faulty ore grade and tonnage estimates are among the leading causes of mine failures. Wide swine's in mineral commodity prices are usually cited as another major risk in mining. Because any ore deposit is a finite resource and the miner has limited discretion in selecting a mining sequence, mines are generally at the mercy of notoriously fickle commodity markets. There is a tendency for many mine investment analysts to feel that mineral market uncertainties are unprecedented in severity. Of course, prices in other markets rise and fall also-in some cases as precipitously as with minerals. However, two other mining characteristics tend to compound this marketing risk. First, the preproduction development period for a new mine is characteristically long. Under extremely favorable conditions, a significant mine may be developed in as little as two years, but the norm is four to six years or more. Second, mining is among the most capital intensive industries, consistently ranking near the top among all industrial sectors in assets per employee, and near the bottom in annual sales dollars per dollar of assets. Thus, mine investors typically have large sums invested for a long time before the outcome of the venture is determined by notoriously unpredictable markets. This is not a business for the faint of heart, and the importance of sound investment decision making is obvious. The high risk and technical complexity of mining operations have combined to require greater attention to financial evaluation by mining engineers than by most engineers in other specialties. Nearly all early mining engineering textbooks dealt with problems in mine valuation in a detailed manner; and, today, the sophistication of capital investment analysis is high in the mineral industries. Traditional Mine Valuation Methods Although some evaluation process has no doubt accompanied nearly every mine development throughout history, a formalized quantitative approach first emerged in the last half of the 19th century with the establishment of academic programs in mining engineering. The philosophy and approach to mine valuation that evolved at this time were, with periodic minor refinements, considered the standard for nearly a century. Only after 1960 did major changes begin to occur. The traditional approach to mine valuation reflected the investment community's historic attitudes toward risk. Mines were generally considered too risky for debt financing, and virtually every new mine was financed from internally generated funds or new equity subscriptions. Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers' findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.

Over a period of eight years (1989 through 1997) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a nonevaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). The following three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10 to 20 min of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down, and more than 100 min of additional residence time is required to produce percentage increases equivalent to what was achieved in the first 10 to 20 min. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C (525°F to 61 5 OF) range.

A longterm overburden removal plan can be realistic and optimum only when the cost and capacity profiles off the equipment assigned to the operation are taken into consideration. Therefore, the planning should involve the proper assignment of equipment capacity by insuring a timely investment and a timely replacement policy throughout the mine life. A dynamic solution algorithm has been developed, by which all possible truck fleet alternatives are evaluated for each year off the operation. Cumulative cost off the operation is carried throughout the analysis. The optimum solution is obtained by selecting the minimum cumulative cost at the last year and tracing backward the best fleet alternative for each year. The solution provides: 1. the optimum amount of overburden to be removed each year; 2. the best fleet to be assigned to the job; and 3. the best equipment replacement policy.

A principal long-term goal of this laboratory is to achieve a detailed understanding at the molecular level of the microbial-dependent solubilization of minerals. Three recent advances in this research are summarized. (i) An in situ electrolytic procedure is described whereby large quantities of autotrophic iron-oxidizing organisms may be achieved for fundamental or applied studies. Over 600 grams wet weight of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were harvested from a single 55-gallon growth vessel. (ii) A basis is presented for classifying some 70 different iron-oxidizing bacteria into one of 4 categories, depending on the type of redox-active electron transport proteins expressed during aerobic respiration on reduced iron. Comparative spectroscopic analyses indicated that different electron transport mechanisms exist in different genera and species of acidophilic bacteria that respire on iron. (iii) A method is introduced to investigate the binding interaction between bacteria and minerals, based on changes in the electrokinetic properties of the two species. Preliminary experiments indicated that the electrophoretic mobilities of pyrite and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were both altered when the two colloid particles were mixed prior to the actual electrokinetic measurement. The need for more basic information regarding all aspects of the microbial-dependent solubilization of minerals is evident.

High-purity gypsum of Permian age crops out in three major gypsum districts of western Oklahoma. The northwest and southwest districts have important reserves in the Blaine Formation, whereas reserves of the west-central district are in the Cloud Chief Formation. Gypsum beds of the Blaine Formation typically are 10 to 30 feet thick, 95 to 99 percent pure, and interbedded with shales that are 2 to 30 feet thick. The base of the Cloud Chief Formation consists of a massive bed of gypsum that typically is 20 to 100 feet thick and is 92 to 97 percent pure. Anhydrite is present in the sulfate beds, beneath 20 to 100 feet of overburden, at a number of places in all three districts. Total gypsum reserves in the three districts are estimated at 48 billion short tons. These reserves are well suited for open-pit mining or quarrying, because gypsum typically forms hills in the semiarid climate of western Oklahoma, and the gypsum layers are nearly flat lying, without folds or faults. Seven companies currently mine a total of 1.0 to 1.4 million tons of Oklahoma gypsum each year for wallboard, for plaster, as a retarder in portland cement, and as a soil conditioner.
