This work describes the design, analysis, and comparison of discrete simulation and static spreadsheet models developed to compare the oreflow efficiency of two conveyor-based material handling systems; one approach with a conveyor stream in series and one with parallel conveyor streams. Analysis and comparison indicated that daily rates were significantly affected by random conveyor failures in both designs. The compound effect of random failures limited the effectiveness of long belt assemblies in series, while the parallel conveyor stream design partially alleviated this constraint. The static spreadsheet model predicted a lower average daily oreflow rate for the series conveyor stream design and a higher average daily oreflow rate for the design with parallel conveyor streams when compared to the discrete simulation results. These discrepancies were the product of model sensitivity to operational factors incorporated in the system and provided the opportunity to further use the discrete simulation models for trade-off comparisons and sensitivity breakdowns of mine operating practices and material handling system efficiencies in both the series and parallel belt stream designs

Silica sand has been mined in Illinois from the St. Peter Sandstone since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Ottawa on the Illinois River in the north-central part of the state. Production of this sand, consumed mainly by the glass and foundry industries but also sought after for many other uses, has grown with the economy, and last year's output in Illinois exceeded 4,000,000 tons. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey, and a very complete report was issued in 1928, authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the sand has changed very little during the intervening 40 years, so that much of Lamar's data and descriptions are applicable today. More recently, the stratigraphy of the St. Peter Sandstone in north-central Illinois has become better known from the work of Willman and Payne (1942). The present authors have borrowed generously from Lamar's publication, and we wish to acknowledge the contribution of both of these studies to our work.

Wet kata cooling power (WKCP) measured using a kata thermometer is a well-known heat stress index in mining industries. Although over the years several researchers have proposed different heat indices and indicated the limitations of the kata thermometer, it is still being used in many areas, especially in the South African gold mining industry, mainly because of its simplicity and rapidity of assessment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the newly developed empirical expression for WKCP, and some of the more prevalent empirical expressions. The analysis presented based on a regression technique aims to assess the disagreement between model predictions and actual measurements. It is found that the WKCP expresses bioclimatic interaction quite well under the specific parameter of interaction that explains the harsh thermal environment and air condition, such as metabolic activity, the person’s clothing, and the velocity of the air in which the person is working. The statistical analysis shows that the WKCP exhibits significant estimates to thermal stress under lower air velocities, light clothing, and higher metabolic activity rates.

Gold chlorination which will be presented in this paper is limited entirely to the use of gaseous chlorine in a fluidized bed reactor at elevated temperatures in the absence of aqueous water. The only water used in this process is that which is used in scrubbing the effluents. Low temperatures are defined as those below 500°C. All experimentation for this paper was carried out on a laboratory scale, with all calculations extrapolated frpm this. Some of the data is drawn from work with other projects which have been operated at pilot and larger scale.

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. Teltech has been a pioneer and leader in KM, both as a practitioner and as a leading consultant to other organizations.

"Wear of TBM tools significantly affects tunneling advance rates. Wear-prediction models are based (amongst others) on the abrasivity of the present geology, which is determined via laboratory tests. To evaluate the results from such tests in context, this work considers the tribological system TBM tool from a materials technology perspective. In so doing, the microstructures of different application-oriented materials are presented and discussed in terms of their wear behavior and wear resistance. The significant influence of tool materials on the abrasivity of the geology and thus wear prediction models has already be identified. LCPC, Cerchar and nano-scratch experiments have been performed as confirmation. Material-dependent wear mechanisms and their correlation in terms of tunneling have shown that it is mandatory to consider the complete tribological system to estimate the wear of TBM tools. 1 INTRODUCTION Mechanized tunneling is vital to ensure necessary infrastructure development in megacities like Tokyo (Bay Tunnel), Istanbul (Eurasia Tunnel) and Mexico City (Tunnel Emisor Oriente). The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has been established for many years. In contrast to other methods such as boring and blasting or excavation using dredgers, tunneling with TBMs allows simultaneous excavation and removal of both the mineral and tunnel lining by tubbing segments or shotcrete. This makes tunneling more efficient, allowing for faster development of the tunnel in both hard rock and soil [1]. When budgeting such tunneling projects, precise planning and coordination in terms of tunneling technique choice (e.g. EPB or Slurry-shield), the relevant geology, and the associated penetration rates and tool wear are required. In particular, wear to TBM tools has a significant impact on tunneling progress. Due to wear, tools become dulled or lose their functionality because of brittle material behavior, thus reducing penetration rates and therefore tunneling efficiency [1]. As a result, additional tool changes are necessary, leading to higher overall costs due to down times and maintenance costs. Therefore, there is strong interest in a reliable and precise wear prediction model for TBMs. As already mentioned, the geology and associated wear of the tunneling tools define the maintenance times."

When extending the life of an existing mine in Appalachia, it is common to acquire the adjacent reserves and extend the existing mine into it. The existing mine is often renovated to accommodate the new conditions. The existing mining system and the track and belt haulage systems may he modified while the new property is integrated into the old one. All of these changes create new constraints for the mine ventilation system (MVS) that require proper planning and control procedures. This paper presents a study that was carried out for the ventilation system of a newly expanded underground coal mine in the Appalachian region. The process of correcting the ventilation system of the existing mine is discussed. That is followed by a discussion of some of the stages of controlling the expanded system. Numerical data for these steps are also presented.

"The kinetics of leaching of a saprolitic ore from Indonesia by citric acid solution under atmospheric pressure was investigated. An examination of the effects of leaching temperature, citric acid concentration, pulp density and ore particle size on the dissolution rate of nickel found that they all had significant influence on the rate. The highest nickel recovery (95.6 percent) was achieved under the leaching conditions of ore particle size of 212-355 microns, citric acid concentration of 1 M, leaching time of 15 days, pulp density of 20 weight/volume percent, leaching temperature of 40°C and shaker speed of 200 rpm. The shrinking core model was found to be appropriate for describing the leaching kinetics of this ore in citric acid solutions at atmospheric pressure. The experimental data were well interpreted by this model with rate of reaction controlled by diffusion through the solid product layer. Using the Arrhenius expression, the apparent activation energy for nickel dissolution was evaluated as 12.38 kJ/mol. Finally, on the basis of the shrinking core model, a proposed empirical kinetic model for the leaching of nickel from this Indonesian saprolitic ore was expressed as a mathematical model, which was verified as consistent with the observed experimental results.IntroductionIndonesia has some of the world’s largest nickel laterite reserves and was the largest producer of nickel – in the form of nickel lateritic ores – in the world in 2013 (Merchant Research and Consulting Ltd, 2014). However, only high-grade saprolites are processed in Indonesia using pyrometallurgical methods to produce ferronickel and nickel matte. Lower-grade saprolites and limonites are removed, becoming waste or overburden in mining site areas. Hydrometallurgical methods, involving either chemical leaching or bioleaching, are now seen as the most important technologies for treating nickel laterites in the future because of their advantage of not only extracting nickel and iron but also other valuable elements. In addition, hydrometallurgical methods consume less energy and have lower capital and operational costs. Although they are recognized to be more suited to limonites, some researchers have studied their use in the extraction of nickel and other metals from saprolites (Guo et al., 2009; Lu et al., 2013). Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metals, especially nickel, promise to be meaningful alternatives to pyrometallurgical processes to primarily treat low-grade saprolites for which pyrometallurgical processing is not favorable"

The Bulagidun copper-gold system occurs in Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks. It is located (figure 1, from Curless, 1991) ca. two days walk from the coast in an isolated area on the northerly slope of the main range of mountains, in steep terrain dissected by erosion. Detailed and district-scale exploration from 1988 to 1991 by BHP Minerals defined a small, sub-economic resource of gold and copper. One preliminary estimate of the resource in bedrock suggests 14.4 million tons at 0.68 grams / Tonne Au and 0.61% Cu, in multiple small bodies.

The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

Although fraught with problems of completeness and comparability, statistical measures of mineral exploration in the United States point downward for 1985 and 1986. Exploration expenditures in the US domestic and Canadian companies have dropped steadily from a 1981 peak of about $400 million to about $190 million in 1985, according to a recent survey of exploration statistics by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). These totals have been adjusted to account for differences in the estimated coverage of exploration activity by each year's SEG survey. This survey is now supported by the US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The drop in current dollar amounts does not take into account the effects of inflation, which would make the decline even more substantial. Metals Economics Group of Boulder, CO reported in its Mine Development Bimonthly that announced exploration budgets for 1986 indicated an even larger drop for the past year. Worldwide expenditures for companies covered by the report dropped from about $800 million to $750 million from 1984 to 1985 and plummeted to about $600 million in 1986. Exploration activity has been declining since about 1981. This has been due in large part to low prices for base and ferrous metals. Exploration budgets of mining subsidiaries of oil companies have plunged as parent companies try to conserve cash in the face of the sharpest decline in oil prices in nearly 40 years. Mining subsidiaries of petroleum firms that were either liquidated or divested recently include Anaconda (Arco), Getty Mining (Texaco), and Cyprus Minerals (Amoco). Exploration expenditures in Canada increased in 1984 in regions where gold is a traditional target. But there was little change in 1985, based on preliminary statistics from a federal government report (Energy, Mines and Resources Mineral Bulletin MR 211, 1986). Claim staking in Canada dropped 23% from 1983 to 1984 and declined slightly in 1985. Diamond drilling increased in 1984 to the record levels of 1980 and 1981. The ratio of exploration to development expenditures in Canada, however, fell from a 1981 peak of 0.9 to about 0.5 in 1984. The report also indicated that, since 1981, there has been a massive write-off of reserves with high production costs. Reserve levels of all major metals were down since 1981. Precious metals exploration accounts for an increasing share of total mineral exploration. For example, the SEG data show that 90% of 1985 US exploration expenses by domestic mining companies were devoted to base and precious metals, compared with only 51% in 1980. The restructuring of the mining industry has been accompanied by a decrease in response to the last two SEG annual surveys, but the trend towards precious metals was already established in earlier years. Trade journal reports suggest that the reduction of long-term interest rates has encouraged the mining industry to make cost-reducing capital investments in existing mines to maintain competitiveness. This is consistent with the observations that metals explorations in 1986 was characterized not by announcements of "grassroots" discoveries, but by on-property exploration on identified mines or prospects. In an effort to cut costs, gold mining companies have been following up on low cost production opportunities in their prospect inventories. Short-term, low risk, heap leach operations that can produce rapid returns on investment have been pursued. The characteristics of gold leaching from carbonaceous matter by sodium cyanide, and sorption of gold cyanide to carbonaceous matter in autoclaved and non -autoclaved gold ore from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was investigated. Much greater gold cyanide complex sorption was observed for the carbonaceous matter in high preg-robbing ores relative to the low preg-robbing ores. This observation corroborates previous reports that have attributed observed preg-robbing behavior to the carbon in the ore. Gold cyanide complex sorption was found to be reversible for carbonaceous matter from low preg-robbing ore, but was irreversible for carbonaceous matter from high preg-robbing ores. Autoclaving the ore appeared to enhance the sorptive behavior of the carbonaceous matter from both high and low preg-robbing ores.

INTRODUCTION Nevada Goldfields began underground mining development at the Kingston Project in September, 1986, followed by mill start-up in March, 1987. The first gold pour in April followed three years of preparatory work in establishing a North American operational base for the production of precious metals by Golconda Minerals N.L., an Australian mining firm. GENERAL CORPORATE BACKGROUND The Golconda Group of companies was established in early 1983 in Australia. It began operations by successfully retreating tailings at several old gold mining sites throughout Australia. With the limited reserves available for tailings retreatment, Golconda began to look toward the future by conducting a gold exploration program in Australia. However, the continued high price of gold in Australia had limited the possibilities of acquiring good properties at a reasonable cost and consideration was given to looking outside Australia in addition to Golconda's domestic exploration activities. North America was favored because of the proven potential for substantial gold deposits, the established infrastructure which would allow for rapid and cost-effective development of new projects and the advantages of similar political and economic climates. In mid-1984, Golconda established an office in California and began an extensive study of over 100 prospects throughout the United States. Two prospects were identified as a result of this study whch showed merit; one was located at Empire, Colorado and the other at Aurora, Nevada. Negotiations were then successfully undertaken to acquire these two properties. Golconda's U.S. offices were moved to Reno, Nevada in early 1985 to facilitate management of its projects. To operate and manage these projects, a small Canadian company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Cannon Minerals, was acquired by Golconda and renamed Nevada Goldfields Corporation. The current structure of the company is shown below in Figure 1. A private placement of 2,575,000 shares of common stock at US54.00 per share was arranged by Jacksons Limited of Australia in association with W.I. Carr (U.K.) Limited of London. This placement resulted in US510.3 million being available in May, 1986 for the acquisition and initial development of the Aurora and Empire projects. While the financing was underway, project planning commenced on both the Aurora and Empire projects. The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.

The largest Spanish kaolin deposits formed on granites occur in Galicia (NW Spain) due to a widespread kaolinization of Variscan granitoids. This paper provides insight of the origin of this kaolinization process on the basis of a mineralogical and geochemical study carried out in two kaolin deposits, presently mined to be used in the paper industry. Mineral composition of the deeply kaolinized rocks is dominated by well-ordered kaolinite with minor quartz, K-feldspar, mica (illite/muscovite), locally gibbsite, and traces of resistant accessory phases (rutile, ilmenite, zircon and monazite). The content and structural order of the kaolinite decrease with depth. Kaolinite formed by extensive replacement of feldspars (plagioclase). Differential mobilization of major and trace elements during kaolinization has been inferred by using a mass-balance approach. Significant amounts of Na, Ca and minor Mn, Sr, P and U were removed from incipiently leachable minerals (plagioclase and apatite), and K, Rb, Cs and Ba were released from K-feldspar and mica. On the contrary, Ti, Zr, Th, Hf and the REE are retained in the resistant trace minerals that are concentrated in the fine fractions of the kaolins.

In this paper a correlation between selectivity of flocculant adsorption and separation efficiency is outlined and a potential technique to achieve selective adsorption of flocculants is discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.
