The material composition of product is defined as the quantity of metal used per unit of product manufactured during a year. This ratio measures the efficiency of converting a ray material into final products. The material composition of product has shown steady and persistent declines over time for most metals and materials. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology, resulting from substitutions of other materials and improvements in production efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to study trends in the material composition of product to reveal the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

Selective flocculation was used to produce superclean zinc concentrate with minimized silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, Tennessee. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but has never been used for processing zinc. The feed material assayed 0.45% Si02. Use of 0.56 kg/tonne (1.13 lb/st) of sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/tonne (0.141 lb/st) of causticized tapioca starch resulted in 98.2% zinc recovery in a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The present target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is 0.3% Si02. This work has shown that selective flocculation offers a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

Researchers at the University of Alabama have developed a method for producing fuzzy linguistic models of mineral processing equipment directly from engineering data. These fuzzy linguistic models rely exclusively on data collected from the processing systems being modeled and do not presuppose an understanding of the physics of the system. The fuzzy linguistic models use descriptive rules and explicit membership functions that provide a precise, nonmathematical description of the processing equipment. A genetic algorithm is employed to simultaneously select rules and tune membership functions used in the fuzzy models. The result is an extremely flexible approach to modelling that is applicable in a variety of linear and nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of this approach to modelling is demonstrated using a four-input, two-output model of a grinding circuit.

The Bureau of Mines investigated rapid bubble-pulp separation to improve flotation kinetics. A shallow-depth froth separator was employed to quickly recover the mineral-laden bubbles from a mixture of ore, water, and air bubbles. The shallow depth minimized the rising distance required to recover even the smallest size bubbles (100 ~m). Therefore, the slurry remained in the unit only long enough to recover the bubbles before the pulp exited through the conical bottom. Joining this unit with a rapid bubble-particle attachment unit, a rapid flotation system was formed that floated silica from phosphate in one-fifth of the retention time for conventional mechanical cells. The hydrodynamics of the rapid flotation system along with fundamental parameters for scale-up are presented in this paper.

The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. I am indeed honored to be the 1991 recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award. To be voted this honor by my peers in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and AIME means more to me than I can truly express. Daniel Jackling's position and prominence in the mining industry first came to my attention in the fall of 1949 when I transferred from Wisconsin Institute of Technology, then a three-year school, to the Missouri School of Mines to complete my last year for a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. I played basketball in the Jackling gym and ran track on the Jackling field. I didn't know a lot about Jackling then, except he was an honored graduate of the school and, obviously, supported the school financially. Over the years, Jackling's name kept coming up. He was a man with a reputation for being a doer, a mining leader who was always a step ahead, a mining engineer who knew how to motivate men in the working place, to organize mining systems, to finance and organize corporations. to open up new, low-grade ore bodies for exploitation. If Jackling were alive today, I would expect he would bean excellent candidate to apply practical rock mechanics to his projects. Looking over the list of Jackling Award recipients, I have known many, have met many personally and had a few who were dear friends that affected my own professional life. Ab Shoemaker, '58, and I consulted at the White Pine Copper Co. on mining problems in the 1960s. We arranged for our visits to the mine to coincide so that we could collaborate on our ideas. I would rent an auto and drive for Ab. He said he was the only mining engineer in the country that had a PhD for a chauffeur. James Boyd, '67, was my mentor as regards the White Pine Rock Mechanics Program that we organized in 1963. Only through Boyd's forsight. leadership, dedication and willingness to spend money on research and development did the Practical Rock Mechnics Program at White Pine succeed. He never wavered in his support to that program or to me personally. Tom Howard, '75, was my predecessor in 1970 as Director of Mining Research for the US Bureau of Mines. When I joined the Bureau in August 1970, he had the research centers up and running. Any successes I may have had with the Bureau of Mines were due in great part to Tom's leadership and organization throughout the 1960s. Gene Cameron, '68, was my teacher at the University of Wisconsin and I remember him fondly. He was the one professor who lectured in a manner that made me welcome going to his classes each day, a truly remarkable educator. If you have come today to listen to me talk about instrumentation, rock properties, stress-strain relationships, rock mechanics theory, etc., you will be disappointed. Large volumes of data have been collected by well qualified theoreticians to define stress-strain conditions in mines. Unfortunately, very little of this data has been used by industry due to the lack of initiative and understanding by the researchers to the true problems of implementation in the industry. I hope my remarks will assist future investigators to work through the maze of operational problems so they will experience the satisfaction of seeing their research used. I fully realize that the Jackling Award is given by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and is primarily offered for accomplishments in hardrock mining. I have found it impossible to separate hardrock and coal mining when I talk about "Applied Rock Mechanics." There is too much overlap and the same mechanics principles are applied to both. For example, coal mine designs have been applied to salt, trona and potash. Also, the original layout and design of White Pine Copper Mine was based on coal mine designs. Radial gas holdup profiles have been measured in a 50x400 cm flotation column using a multi-cell conductivity probe. Three different bubble generation systems were examined: up to eight vertical filter cloth spargers, three horizontal filter cloth spargers, and three (horizontal) Cominco-type spargers. The variables tested were: number of spargers, symmetry of their arrangement, and height above spargers. Batch water with up to 20ppm frother concentration was used. The general observation is that the profiles tend to be uniform (i.e. flat) with some exhibiting a slight wavy shape. The vertical sparger arrangement proved the most difficult to achieve profile symmetry. The horizontal spargers gave uniform profiles at right angle to their length but a decreasing gas holdup along their length; the Cominco-type spargers gave slightly less scatter in the data. Switching off selected spargers (to simulate malfunction) did not produce strong asymmetry in the profiles.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. The warm southwestern desert of Arizona is an ideal location for ASARCO's new Sacaton Unit. The climate of this arid region played a major role in the design considerations of the Unit's crushing and concentrating facilities. Low yearly rainfall and relatively high yearly temperatures are a combination that was taken advantage of when designing the surface facilities. The plantsite, located due west of the mine pit, is in an area originally covered with sparse desert vegetation, underlain to an average depth of 125 feet by desert alluvium. The entire plantsite area slopes gently to the southwest at approximately 1%. Ground conditions at the plantsite area were not acceptable for construction due to the collapsability of the wetted soil when under loaded conditions, Overburden from the pit area was used to form the foundation for the entire plantsite. This waste material, entirely devoid of rock, was placed and compacted to an elevation approximately 20 feet above the desert floor. Elevating the plantsite by filling with waste material not only provided an adequate construction foundation but also eliminated the possibility of flooding from run-off in the surrounding desert areas.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Canadian open-pit mines are highly mechanized and use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. During the past few years, productivity improvements at Canadian open-pit mines have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment, in-pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of global positioning systems (GPS). Mine planning has become computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning. Equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep the equipment functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1997, the mining and mineral processing sector employed 370,000 Canadians, contributing $26.2 billion to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). The value of production of the Canadian mineral industry, including coal, amounted to $19.1 billion in 1997. Gold remained Canada's leading mineral with production valued at $2.8 billion. This was followed by copper ($2 billion), coal ($1.9 billion), zinc ($1.6 billion) and nickel ($1.9 billion). [ ] Synthetic crude oil from oil-sands mining operations in Alberta represents an important part of Canada's petroleum production. In 1997, the value of synthetic oil production was $2.87 billion. Canadian oil-sands mining has contributed significant technology developments in Canada.

The impact generated by old abandoned mines in Peru have produced mining environmental liabilities, which can generate an impact on the environment. In the search for long-term sustainable solutions, Phytoremediation is presented as an interesting alternative, since it allows the use of Peruvian native plant species for the accumulation of heavy metals. In this paper, we present the results of native high Andean species: Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida. The final metal concentration in the aerial parts and in the roots of each plant show that Stipa Ichu is more efficient to recover Fe, reaching almost 278 times its initial value. In the same way, this plant is efficient to remove Zn, Cu and Cd, reaching maximum values of 64, 39 and 12 times its initial concentration respectively. Cortaderia Nitida turned out to be more efficient to recover Fe, Zn, Cu and Cr, with highest recovery of 250, 117, 39 and 13 times its initial value respectively. Finally, based on translocation factor, Stipa Ichu has better capacities of hyperaccumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr. Cortaderia Nitida only shows hyperaccumulation of Cr.

The Risk-Informed Decision Making (RIDM) working group is a group of industry professionals formed under the joint initiative undertaken by United States Society of Dams (USSD), Tailings Dam Safety Committee and Canadian Dam Associations (CDA) Mining Dam Safety Committee (MDC). The working group was organized to develop a guideline on implementation of a RIDM process relating to the design of mining water dams and Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF). Since its formation in 2022, the group has completed a literature review of more than one hundred (100) cross industry publications on applications of RIDM in mining water dams and TSFs, has held two industry workshops in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 2024 and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2025 to capture industry input relating to the understanding and application of RIDM. The working group has subsequently formulated a process that constitutes good industry practice as it relates to application of RIDM in mining dams and TSFs. The authors, through their engagement and leadership in the working group and facilitating the two industry workshops in 2024 and 2025, are of the opinion that the successful application process of RIDM across Canada and United States (U.S.) is still not clear to many industry practitioners. There is confusion over terminology, good versus poor RIDM, and in some cases reluctance to use the RIDM terminology. This paper addresses critical knowledge gaps identified in the RIDM implementation for mining water dams and TSFs through three years of stakeholder engagement. It provides clarity of the process via a joint position statement and implementation roadmap, resolves terminology confusion, and documents contradicting industry opinions to promote adoption of good RIDM practices in Canada, U.S. and beyond.

"The Earth’s properties, composition and structure ahead of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be mapped for hazard assessment during excavation. We study the use of seismic-exploration techniques for this purpose. We focus on a seismic system for soft soils, where shear waves are better and easier to interpret than compressional waves, as has been shown over the last decade. The system is intended to be deployed on the machine’s cutter head, with a few seismic sources and sufficiently many seismic sensors to tackle spatial variability and noise characteristics. An important property of the newly developed system is its ability to process data with very little human interaction. Images need to be available in near real time, without human interactions slowing down the imaging process. This can be achieved by employing Full Waveform Inversion, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed data. Because this method may suffer from local minima in the cost function if the data lack low-frequency information, we employ a dedicated seismic source that can generate sufficiently low frequencies for the relevant length scales. With data acquired in a number of field settings that mimic realistic TBM configurations, we show that the designed seismic system can successfully look ahead of the TBM and offers a valuable capability to support decision-making during tunnel excavation. INTRODUCTION While excavating a tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the geology and the ground conditions along the planned tunnel trajectory need to be investigated in order to safely and efficiently carry out the underground operations. This entails detecting the occurrence of boulders, foundations, pipes and faults, necessary to prevent hazards and time-consuming delays in the tunnel boring operations. In order to facilitate ground prediction ahead of a TBM, techniques as used in seismic exploration can be deployed. Two components common to seismic-exploration techniques are data acquisition and processing, the latter including inversion. We will discuss each of these for the application to tunnel excavation with TBM, in particular for soft soils."

Reagent control for optimum concentrate yield was studied by laboratory batch flotation tests simulating the Groveland plant flotation circuit in which a rougher concentrate is cleaned twice. The reagents were a fatty acid collector, a sulphonate collector and sulphuric acid. The study included two types of flotation feed representative of the reground and deslimed tailing from the spiral concentration circuit, one when the ore mineral is predominantly specularite and the other when it is magnetite. The factorial design included three levels of fatty acid, five levels of sulphonate and five levels of H2S04, with the two types of ore in nested blocks, making up a total of 75 tests. Similarity of results and reproducibility were established in preliminary tests. The final tests were performed in random order under closely controlled conditions following the established procedure.

If one considers that prehistoric man's first house may have been a limestone cave, calcium carbonate may be the most timeless of all building materials. Fanciful history aside, CaCO3 has been used for countless applications in human habitats. After all, tine marble block and tiles have always been the hallmark of eloquents and style. Mortars and cements derived from limestone have held together the very blocks of our civilization. In modem times, synthetic polymers are blended with ground limestone to produce everything from pipe, floor tile, cultured marble and house siding. All of these miracles of our technology contain CacO3 of various sizes and in varying amounts. This paper will discuss some of the critical attributes of CaCO3 which make it suitable for the new building products that have helped increase our standard of living. The vehicle of discussion will be a residential, single family house.

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) adopted its Clean Water Plan (CWP) in May 2020, as part of a federal consent decree to comply with the USEPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy. Planned improvements include constructing a new regional storage/conveyance tunnel system, promoting green infrastructure/ source control, and expanding the treatment plant. Preliminary planning for the tunnel system was completed in October 2020. The Ohio River Tunnel (ORT) project is the first of three tunnel projects that make up the regional tunnel system. The ORT project began final design in 2021. This paper discusses the advancements made to the ORT preliminary planning concepts considering property availability, alignment optimization, tunnel boring machine evaluation, contract packaging and delivery schedules.

In a 2007 report to the U.S. Congress, the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) stated that built-in-place refuge alternatives (BIP RAs) provide significant advantages over mobile refuge alternatives. At present, the requirement to locate refuge alternatives within 305 m (1,000 ft) of working faces makes BIP RAs impractical in most coal mines. BIP RAs would be practical if three issues are addressed: (1) allowing BIP RAs to be located at greater distances from the working face, (2) developing a reliable process for the design and approval of BIP RA stoppings that meet the 0.1-MPa (15-psi) design criteria, and (3) developing systems that reliably deliver breathable air to the refuge alternative. In 2015, NIOSH OMSHR conducted a study of these three issues and issued a report. In the report, justification was provided for allowing the placement of BIP RAs at greater distances from the working face than the currently mandated 305 m (1,000 ft), guidelines were developed that could be used by industry when submitting BIP RA stopping design applications for approval which are patterned after the Mine Safety and Health Administration guidelines for coal mine seal design applications, and insights were provided into options for providing a reliable supply of clean, breathable air to BIP RAs. This paper presents a summary of the study’s findings and also addresses issues discovered during the building and designing of a BIP RA that OMSHR researchers constructed in NIOSH’s Experimental Coal Mine in Pittsburgh to research the testing and improving of BIP RAs. These issues include several issues related to the delivery, distribution and exhaust of ventilation air to the BIP RA and some general construction issues that require further investigation.

"Re-occurring face ignitions in U.S. coal mines are concerning and require a closer look at air quality monitoring systems and practices employed in these mines. The explosion disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia in 2010 caused 29 fatal injuries and was largely caused by inadequate water sprays and inadequate ventilation monitoring. In this comparison, the author compares ventilation system monitoring in Australian, German and U.S. underground coal mines and makes recommendations for improvements and best practices. Mines in Germany and Australia are adhering to more stringent requirements for monitoring air quality and quantity and for monitoring water spray systems on cutters to prevent frictional ignitions. Air quality should to be monitored for sufficient oxygen, toxic gases, explosibility and for fire gases indicating a potential fire. Ventilation monitors must also confirm that sufficient quantities of air are available. Fully automated, continuously recording atmospheric monitoring and alarm systems are established practices in Germany and Australia and should be mandated for U.S. mines as well, in addition to the current, regular spot inspections of the ventilation system by certified mine examiners. BACKGROUND: METHANE EXPLOSIONS, FACE IGNITIONS AND NEED FOR AIR QUALITY MONITORING Accumulations of methane in face areas of underground coal mines frequently lead to ignitions that can cause burns, traumatic injuries and, in the case of the 2010 Upper Big Branch disaster, cause major explosions with multiple fatalities. Table 1 shows the number of reported face ignitions in U.S. coal mines between 2010 and 2014, based on statistical data published by MSHA (MSHA 2010 – 2014). Although there appears to be a downward trend in such ignition incidents over time, ignitions continue to occur with some regularity; and each ignition may cause a potentially catastrophic mine explosion.Per regulation, all U.S. coal mining machinery, continuous miners and longwall equipment, is outfitted with continuously monitoring methane sensors wired to cut power to the equipment as the methane level exceeds 1%. Face ignitions keep occurring because these sensors are usually not positioned in sufficiently close proximity to the coal cutting drums or to the freshly exposed coal face where the methane is most likely released. Therefore, methane may accumulate in explosive concentrations near the coal face and the cutting drums long before the gas concentration reaches the 1% level near the monitor and creates an alarm."
