A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

The definitions of system pressure loss (mine head) and system resistance, which are traditionally associated with single-fan net- works, are applied to multiple-fan ventilation networks. The system characteristics -- relations among air power, pressure loss, air quantity and resistance -- are analyzed by introducing the concept of subsystems. These subsystems are associated with the fans located in a cutset of the network. For a multiple-fan network, the resistances for the subsystems and total system are dependent on the quantity ratios of the subsystems. In general the pressure loss of a subsystem or a total system does not vary as the square of the corresponding air quantity. If the quantity ratios of subsystems are all held constant, then the resistances become constant and the pressure losses are predictable from the quantities employing the "square law." The system resistance has a minimum value under the natural- splitting flow pattern. Being independent of the value of system quantity, the minimum system resistance provides a basis for comparing the different networks.

The analytical pillar design procedure employing the Wilson equation is based on the site-specific material strength of the floor, pillar, and roof rock. Stable pillars so designed will sometimes be larger than those designed using empirical methods thus providing more stability or at other times smaller than empirically designed pillars thus conserving natural resources. Presented here is a detailed procedure for the analytical design of soft rock pillars using the Wilson Equation. An example of this procedure is presented that uses data from a mine in the Owl Seam in Southern Appalachia. These Owl Seam pillars are now in use and are performing as expected. Also addressed is an assessment of the Dr. Scovazzo?s analytically designed pillars based on pillar performance data gathered by Dr. Mark in the Southern Appalachian Coal Field.

The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

This work focused on identifying, examining and ranking the physical and environmental hazards at inactive and abandoned mine sites in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Earlier inventory projects in the Black Hills concentrated on federal lands, while more recent efforts have examined abandoned mines on state and private lands. The more recent efforts are a result of passage of legislation by the State of South Dakota requiring a comprehensive inventory. The inventory information provides criteria for identifying those sites that require further investigation or characterization of the physical safety or environmental hazards. For most AML sites in the Black Hills, location information is all that is typically needed, because the majority of sites pose little environmental or physical hazard.

The AirBoss*200 is a unique ambient airflow sensor with important improvements in accuracy, especially in the critical low end, 0-61 m/min (0-200 fpm) where MSHA regulations apply. All solid state, its design is rugged, and there are no moving parts or delicate filaments. An on-board microprocessor calculates air velocity, linearizes and corrects for temperature, while driving voltage and current loop analog outputs to .3 meters/minute (1 ft/min) resolution. Recent developments also cover both positive and negative flow directions. A hand held computer is available to readout data and to adjust stored range selection, alarm set points, calibration data and the speed of response. Installation in hazardous areas is covered by MSHA Classes G, H and L.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the impact of potential shale gas well breaches and subsequent gas inflow on selected mine ventilation systems of operating longwall panels using a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. A series of tests were performed at 340, 400, and 500 cfm inflow levels utilizing different mine ventilation scenarios. Results suggest that the breached gas can be diluted to meet statutory levels when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. The results enhance the understanding of the gas inflow and mine ventilation system interaction and provide critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving miners’ safety.

A theoretical and experimental study was made of the surface phenomena occurring in a silicate - sulfonate system and a silicate -amine system, Experiments were conducted varying the collector concentration to examine its effect both on the total surface sorption and the rate of sorption. The results were compared to a theoretical model based on a Langmuir-type isotherm, Finally, the flotation behavior of selected silicate minerals was predicted from the sorption results and an explanation for the flotation of silicates postulated on the basis of both the theoretical predictions and experimental data.

The platinum group metals (PGM's) are typically recovered by flotation, smelting of the flotation concentrate to matte, and matte leaching. Concentrates too low grade to be processed economically by the conventional process require a new treatment route. PLATSOL, a new pressure leach process, was developed for the Northmet deposit and dissolves in one step base and precious metals (PGM's and gold). Various options exist to recover all pay metals from the leach liquor. The preferred option to date involves a solid-liquid separation, followed by sulphide precipitation of gold and the PGM's, and copper solvent extraction using commercial solvent extractants. This paper briefly summarises the process and the effect of the main leach parameters. Application of the PLATSOL process to various feedstocks is also presented.

Motivated by recent EU legislation already entered into force or in preparation, this article aims at offering glimpses of the future landscape in the area of subsurface protection against contamination from point sources. Towards this end, it discusses the most salient parts of legislation for the protection of water resources. It then presents results from the wide consultation rounds organized by the European Commission in order to both receive input and help make all opinions heard on the issue of soil protection. Finally, it introduces key provisions of the recent legislation on environmental liability. From the above pieces of legislation, this paper highlights the elements that concern specifically the protection of the subsurface against spills of hazardous wastes from point sources and the requirements for subsurface restoration.

In the northwestern part of the Netherlands lies the deepest solution salt mine in the world. The company operating the mine is Frisia Zout bv (part of the K+S group). Extracting the NaCl from caverns at a depth of nearly 3000 m has a lot of challenges. Continuously monitoring, among others, the flows, pressures and salt concentrations is necessary to safely and economically mine the salt. A system has been set up at Frisia to be able to monitor the data from a distance. Data has been put in graphs to monitor the trends daily. All gauges are also continuously monitored to maintain accuracy. With this system a better understanding of the mining process has been made and has led to many optimizations.

Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural-tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Since their discovery in 1886, they have produced 52% of the gold mined in all of human history (Pretorius, 1989).

Long before excavation begins, the in situ stresses in the horizon of planned underground chambers can be measured by employing the hydrofracturing technique in existing exploratory holes. Such measurements produce the stress magnitudes and directions required for the rational design of rock structures. Two recent case histories are cited in which preexcavation stress measurements for the design of underground powerhouses proved very beneficial in the orientation of the chambers and the estimation of the stability and required support. A third stress measurement case is related to the preexcavation design of tunnels that will house doughnut-shaped superconductive magnets for the storage of electric energy. In all cases, expensive later modifications were probably prevented by measuring stresses early in the design stage.

The Los Angeles Metro Red Line has installed high density polyethylene (HDPE) as a gas and water barrier around all subsurface structures. The paper reviews the geological setting and resulting need for the barrier. HDPE installation practices are outlined, as are the risks to the barrier, from normal placement methods. Testing and inspection methods used to assure a quality installation are described, and also the field tag method for recording deficiencies and their repair. Specifications and installation changes that will be incorporated into subsequent contracts to improve the quality of the installation are high lighted. The cause of the fire that destroyed part of a tunnel is reviewed as are the revised precautions put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. The performance of the filtometer was investigated by calibrating FT-IR data from DPM (dependent variable) to the filtometer spectra (predictor variables) using a partial leastsquares (PLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) approach. "Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."

Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST&apos;s uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. The White Pine Mine is the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, covering an area of approximately 13 square miles in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution mining by circulating a solution of mine water, sulfuric acid, and ferric iron through rubblized ore and recovering copper from solution. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of solution mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution mining fluid indicate that the solution, through time, will change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations include reaction path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine experiments. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides, and sulfides.
