Composite rock mass failures involve intact rock material as well as fracture and shear on existing defects. Experiences from open-cut coalmining in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland are that failures of this nature occur suddenly with little warning, and are much more common than classical structurally controlled failures. Geological conditions and mining practices in the Bowen Basin are described. The circumstances of a sample of composite failures are described in detail in the paper. From this experience it appears that several aspects of conventional geotechnical investigation and design practice have not contributed significantly to either predicting or controlling the risks associated with sudden failures. These practices are described as myths for reasons outlined in the paper. On the other hand, the reality seems to be that high initial stresses and stress changes caused by excavation lead by a process of extensional deformation to a critical stress condition within the rock mass, and that sudden collapse follows when that critical stress condition can no longer be sustained. It is concluded that learnings gained from underground excavations in rock may be more applicable to open pit excavations than previously thought, and that the processes of prefailure deformation require more careful study if we are to develop more reliable risk management controls.

"The predominant current processes for the treatment of oxidized copper–cobalt ores use a reductive acid leach to bring the desired metals into solution. However, the indiscriminate nature of acid leaching results in a solution, akin to a metal soup, containing not only the Cu and Co but also an extensive suite of other metals. These other metals, notably Fe, Mn, Al, Ca, Mg and Si, all have to be eliminated from solution before the copper and cobalt can be recovered. Generally precipitation processes are used, but these tend to result in significant losses of copper and/or more usually cobalt from solution, leading to reduced recoveries. The AmmLeach® process uses ammonia-based chemistry to selectively leach the target metals, leaving the rest behind in the leach residue. This approach eliminates any need to clean the solution of unwanted metals and the consequent metal losses. After solid–liquid separation, the leach solution is immediately subjected to separation and concentration of the copper and cobalt using solvent extraction and electrowinning. INTRODUCTION The Copper Belt extends through the northern part of Zambia and the southern province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and contains the richest and highest grade deposits of copper and cobalt remaining in the world. Whilst there are a number of mines that produce sulphide concentrates, using froth flotation, the largest deposits are those where near-surface sulphides have been weathered over time to form oxides. The oxides cannot be concentrated by conventional physical means to give high recoveries. Despite this, a number of dense medium separation plants have been installed and used to produce a higher grade concentrate which is typically exported (while the rejects, typically 2 to 3% Cu are stockpiled for treatment at a later date). These plants generally have low recoveries and can only be used on the dwindling supply of high grade materials. In exporting the concentrate, little value adding is undertaken within the country, thus greatly reducing the economic benefits to the country. Recent changes to the regulations in the DRC will effectively ban the export of low value ores, concentrates and intermediates in favour of high value metals. This will necessitate mines to install new processing circuits in order to comply with these regulations. The head grade of ores currently being treated in the DRC is slowly decreasing as the extremely high grade materials are being selectively mined out. In many cases, the removal of a small volume of high grade materials leaves a much larger volume of economically marginal ore behind. This is due to a desire for short-term profits overtaking long-term prosperity. The remaining ore, which in many cases is still of relatively high value by world class standards, is likely to be only treatable by low cost heap leaching. There are some initial trials of heap leaching within the DRC, but implementation at a large scale has yet to be adopted."

Bateman Minerals & Metals supplies the APIC Technologies which include the under-bed air-pulsed APIC jig and related technologies such as the JigScan controller and advanced mathematical models of the jig process. Bateman have developed a methodology for predicting process performance for jigs from simplified testing and modelling, based on batch equipment matched to industrial designs. Batch tests conducted on laboratory scale air-pulsed jigs can process small batches of material, such as those obtained from drill core samples. The novelty comes from using an advanced jig process model, ASTRAD, to link the results of batch and continuous jigs. The batch jig presented as a novelty in this paper has been designed to be hydraulically equivalent to the full-scale APIC Jig, allowing the generation of equivalent pulse shapes and using JigScan controller. Lump and fine ferrous ore material have been separated in this unit and any feed >1mm can be tested and extracted. The global test procedure and further modelling focus on the stratification of material, with emphasis on key aspects such as pulse shape, feed characteristics and residence time. The splitting of rejects from concentrates is itself more difficult to reproduce in batch jigging, however the ASTRAD model includes a separation imperfection module, and the APIC Technologies have extraction systems adapted to each type of material. Air pulsed batch jigs are available in several locations and are relocatable. They have been used to treat samples from Australia, South Africa and India as part of studies into ore processing using jigs. Each test layer is available for various physical testing procedures (density and chemical analyses). Test-work is performed on a case by case basis, and analysed using an advanced model ?now available over the internet. Some fundamentals of air-pulsed jigging are recapped along with some of the features of APIC jigs. The process of designing a ?hydraulically equivalent? batch jig test is then described. Some results from jigging tests are presented plus the results of the ASTRAD advanced jig model, which was first developed at the JKMRC with ferrous ores and coal and is now being supported and further developed and utilised by Bateman.

The deep level gold mining environment is characterized by high stresses that give rise to intense mining induced fracturing of the rock mass surrounding the stopes. In a geologically disturbed region where the intensity of mining induced stress fracturing is high, the degree of faulting and/or the frequency of other geological features such as joints may pose serious strata control problems. Unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities namely, faults, joints and mining induced stress fractures tend to divide the immediate hangingwall into unstable keyblocks which, if not supported, may result in extensive falls of ground. Effective support strategies therefore demand detailed investigation of the predominant inclinations and orientations of these discontinuities. The orientations and inclinations of these discontinuities surrounding a deep level stope have been measured. The results are projected onto the lower hemisphere of a stereographic net to determine the factors that contribute to the falls of ground in the stope. The analyses reveal that unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities divides the immediate hangingwall into unstable wedges that may become dislodged between support units.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimize the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focused on ore characterization and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blast ability indices, as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined, a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model; however, it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained, thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both brownfield and greenfield projects on the PPRust operation

The interaction between rock and drill bit during drilling has been modeled for many years, but a complete understanding of the phenomena occurring has yet to materialize. Successful models will allow the prediction of rate of penetration in a given environment and optimal selection of drill bit and drilling parameters, thus minimizing exploration costs. In most rock-drilling models the value of the unconfined compressive strength of the rock (UCS) is used in the predictive equations, within the concept of specific energy, and the value of UCS is the percentage of the value of the stress applied on the drilling bit in order for the bit to advance. While the exact percentage depends on the model used and it is not known with certainty, good knowledge of UCS is nevertheless required before any decent prediction can be made on rate of penetration. Determination of UCS, normally done via destructive testing, requires not only the availability of sound rock core samples but also expensive testing and significant time for the test, which frequently are not available for routine drillability predictions. Hence, a multitude of methods and techniques has been proposed for estimating UCS from various indirect and/or non-destructive measurements, or combination of measurements with neural networks, such as point load index, block punch index, unit weight, and apparent porosity, water absorption by weight, sonic velocity, and Schmidt hardness. The many proposed approaches are critically reviewed and the results are compared, and what becomes apparent is that after many years, not only in mining but also in oil-well drilling, accurate indirect determination of UCS is still an elusive goal. An equation to predict UCS from sonic velocity data is suggested based on several data sets reported in the literature. Use of the specific energy equation with UCS or sonic data and utilization of drilling data allows an estimation of the efficiency of energy transfer from the bit to the rock and of the friction coefficient. Analysis of data reported in the literature, both from laboratory and field studies, has shown that this approach is sound and enables the determination of energy transfer efficiencies and friction coefficients, which for the cases studied range between 15 and 30% and 0.15 and 0.30 respectively. Thus, the suggested data analysis approach allows drillers to focus on inefficiencies and optimize drilling practices in future campaigns. A prototype weightometer soft sensor is under development at DebTech, De Beers in partnership with Venetia Mine. Its main function consists of an online data source; data validation; dynamic weightometer models; online detection of weightometer failure; alarming and replacing a weightometer when it fails. 31 dynamic models have been developed. All models with R2>= 85%are accepted as good models and they generally have satisfactory results with a daily error of less than 8% within 90% confidence level. By using those models, a set of soft sensors can be set up to cover all weightometers in the entire processes starting from primary crushing to the stock piles of dense medium separation (DMS). Some practical issues and concerns on model development are discussed, including data collection, data analysis, data pre-processing, variable selection, time delay, model training and model validation. When deploying the weightometer soft sensor system, the potential benefits could include: reduction in plant downtime; reduction in unplanned maintenance and even replacement of non-critical weightometers, particularly where nuclear weightometers are used. The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

The Rhodax inertial cone grinder, designed by France?s FCB Group Fives, is the result of three years, theoretical and mechanical research in the field of compression grinding by the research staff of FCB?s CRM minerals research centre. A number of potential uses have been assessed and will be discussed in the paper. The crusher is an inertial grinder that works on the pressurized bed fragmentation principle. The fragmentation force is caused by the rotation of unbalanced masses rather than by an eccentric mass, as is the case in a conventional crusher. This makes it possible to achieve very high reduction ratios. By controlling the speed of rotation of the unbalanced masses, the grinding force can be modified, thus changing the product size distribution. The paper describes the machine layout, operating principles, control parameters and will briefly describe the results obtained on reef, waste and ROM reject pebbles. Some comparisons are made with conventional crushing.

A new method, localized uniform conditioning (LUC), was proposed in 2006 for modelling grades of small blocks of ore when data spacing is too broad for their accurate modelling by the linear regression based techniques, such as kriging (Abzalov, 2006). It represents a modified uniform conditioning (UC) technique that calculates the grade distribution functions for the large panels. LUC uses partitioning of the panels onto the small blocks and then ranks them in increasing order of grade. Based on the block ranks, a single grade value can be deduced for each block from the UC model of the gradetonnage relationships of the corresponding panel. After being first presented in 2006, the LUC method has been implemented in ISATIS© (commercial software) and became one of the common approaches for grade estimation when data spacing is broad in comparison with the estimated block size. Several years of study on the LUC method and its application to different geological environments, have allowed identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the method, which are as follows: ? The method produces accurate grade-tonnage functions, which are in a good accordance with a volume-variance relationship principles ? An initial ranking of the selective mining unit (SMU) blocks can be made by direct kriging from the sparse data grid. Therefore, the LUC method can be particularly useful at the early stages of exploration and mining project evaluations when sparsely distributed data is often the only available information ? Accuracy of the local estimation depends on the SMU ranking techniques. When ranking performed by direct kriging of the SMU blocks their spatial distribution is approximate. When the variogram of the studied variable is characterized by a large nugget effect, the block ranks produced by kriging can significantly differ from their ?true? distribution ? Block ranking can be improved using auxiliary data, either geophysical or geochemical. This allows use of the LUC method for integrating different data sets. In particular, LUC can be used for grade control in open pits by integrating resource definition data (e.g. drill-hole assays) and blast-hole assays. The latter are used for the block ranking.

In a gravity separation device, particle shape, size and density all play a role. The combination of these determines where each individual particle reports to in the viscous fluid, where particle crowding (solids to water ratio) also plays a role. To understand the performance of gravity separation devices in the heavy mineral industry, these particle characteristics need to be measured. There are various challenges in analysing particle density and particle size simultaneously for the purpose of quantifying gravity separator performance, not to mention particle shape. These analytical challenges include the high cost of high-density sink-float fractionation, toxicity of high-density sink-float media, inability of sink-float media to fractionate at densities greater than 4.0 g/cm3, and the time-intensive nature of these fractionations. The use of the detailed particle-by-particle output from Qemscan® particle mineral analyses (PMA) as a fast and cost-effective alternative is evaluated. The size and density outputs from the Qemscan® were employed to characterize the performance of a heavy mineral spiral concentrator as an example. An industry research project has been established to examine the issue of rock mass failure in large open pit slopes. The approach began with numerically modelling failure at the laboratory scale with a displacement discontinuity program. The interim results from the program suggest the output failure mode is dependent upon the input parameter cohesion weakening. Es wurde ein Forschungsproject mit unterstützung von Bergbauindustrie bearbeitet. Die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit war die Analysierung des Böschungsgefähr im größen Festgesteinstagebauen. Das Verfahren besteht aus der numerischer Modelierung mit Ansatz einen sonderen Rechnerprogram. Die erste Ergebnis zeigt, daß die Aufgabe am Angabendaten (cohesion) abhängig sein wird. Un project de recherche industriel fût conduit avec le but d’examiner les éboulements de roche dans les mines a ciel ouvert. La premiere étape a été de modelliser numériquement les éboulements dans un laboratoire en utilisant un programme de déplacement discontinu. Les resultants préliminaires du programme indiquent que la prédiction des ébouliements est directement reliée à la magnitude de la cohesion.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings. Among these, Infacon and the Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts Conference series are worth mentioning. The studies from a fundamental point of view include thermodynamics, phase equilibria, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process dynamic aspects of high temperature processes and systems, both in the solid and liquid states.

One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM The technique reported here involves measuring the air pressures generated within sealed boreholes located behind blasts. Results from twelve free face blasts in competent rock environments a represented. There were no instances of high pressure gas penetration, even at distances corresponding to less than one blast burden. Rapidly generated underpressures were measured in most holes, with the magnitudes of the peak pressures decreasing with distance behind the blasts. It has been proposed that the under pressures are the result of new volume created due to crack formation and overall rock mass dilation. The experimental evidence is consistent with this, including a correspondence of the onset times of the peak underpressures with the nominal firing times of the nearest blastholes. New post-blast cracks were observed when using borehole video cameras in the monitoring holes. A calculation of new volume produced within the monitoring holes is proposed as an indicator of damage. While the data exhibit considerable scatter, there is a power function dependence on scaled distance, which resembles that of typical vibration data. The data also lie within the normally quoted vibration regimes for rock damage and are consistent with measured extents of damage. It is concluded that this technique may provide an inexpensive and practical comparative measure of near-field rock damage due to blasting. It is further concluded that gas penetration is not a common phenomenon. Damage appears to be mainly attributable to the nearest blastholes and the control of charge mass in perimeter blastholes is emphasized for damage minimization.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

Mining companies are increasingly looking to the developing world for the next generation of mining projects, often in countries that have little or no previous history of large-scale mining. One of the major challenges for such projects is hiring?and retaining?personnel that have technical skills and experience in mining-related disciplines. Staffing a mine with an expatriate workforce is neither cost-effective nor sustainable, and many countries now insist that mining companies ?transform? the profile of their workforce to more closely mirror the demographic profile of the host population. The need to nurture mining-related skills in emerging mining nations is not solely limited to the workforce: there are also pressing economic and sustainability imperatives to develop capacity within local service providers such as consultants and contractors, as well as to facilitate informed engagement between mining companies, government and civil society. However, few educational institutions in emerging mining nations currently have the ability to offer practical training in mining-related disciplines. Local employees who are sponsored by companies to develop their skills through international study maybe impeded by language and cultural barriers, and may also be taught using course content that is of limited relevance to the specific challenges of their future working environment. This paper addresses the challenge of skills development and retention in emerging mining nations and uses examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region to explore practical means of developing capacity in mining-related disciplines. It examines the need for companies to implement strategies to develop local technical capacity in countries where they envisage a long-term operational future and also highlights the need to foster partnerships between academia, developmental institutions, mining companies, governments and civil society to establish the critical mass of mining-related skills required to nurture the development of a sustainable mining industry.
