Since the passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Bureau of Mines has made many advances in mine communications. These efforts have resulted in the following developments and demonstrations: • Surface-to-surface electromagnetic transmission of baseband voice signals through overburdens as deep as 600 feet. This transmission was achieved with equipment from the Interim Mine Rescue and Survival System Program, and demonstrated that baseband voice communications could be obtained through these overburdens in the absence of mine-generated noise; that is, when the mine power system was shut off. However, during mine operational conditions, the mine-generated noise proved to be so large that effective baseband voice communications to the desired depths could not be effected. • The development of beacon transmitters for locating trapped miners. This work was again the outgrowth of the Interim Mine Rescue and Survival System. Extensions of this work have led to reliable detection and location of trapped miners to depths of 1000 feet. The system, which makes use of a loop antenna deployed where the trapped miner is located, uses low-duty-cycle, tone-burst transmission. Portable tuned receivers and loop antennas are used on the surface to determine the location of the trapped miner. An extension of this work has led to a call-alert paging system concept, wherein a transmitter, similar to that used in the trapped miner system, is used to audibly and/or visually alert key mine personnel carrying pocket receivers that they are wanted at the nearest mine telephone. In addition, a roof-bolt paging system has been developed, wherein commercial paging and mine carrier phone equipment are used in conjunction with a long-wire "roof bolt" antenna to page individuals and relay to them short voice messages.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. Each rule that is given is proposed as necessary or helpful to the accomplishment of one or more of these measures. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED Alive.-See definition of " live." Symmetry theory, based on ground work established in the study of single crystals and experimental procedures utilizing ultrasonic pulse velocities of spherical specimens plotted on equal area polar projections, enables the direct identification of a material's elastic symmetry system and the determination of its orientation, as well as the position of the elastic coordinate axes. The method is especially useful for elasticity studies of polycrystalline and amorphous materials for which this knowledge of symmetry is a prerequisite in determining the independent elastic constants. Projections based on theoretically derived velocities are given for a single crystal from each of the major crystallographic symmetry systems except the triclinic. Projections based on experimentally derived velocities are given for one brass and several rock spheres.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 19,200-hectare Garfield Mountain study area in east central Idaho. The area had been proposed for Wilderness. Cretaceous-age quartzite and limestone conglomerates underlie the area's east half; thick travertine beds, as well as limestones, dolomites, sandstones, and volcanic tuffs occupy the west half. All the rocks have been faulted and folded as part of the Western Overthrust Belt. Two, enormous travertine deposits occur in the west end of the study area. The lower deposit, controlled by Faxe Kalk Inc., has at least 200 million m3 (cubic meters) of travertine resources. Most of their deposit is very bright with a high CaC03 content and a low insoluble residual percentage: thus it is suitable for use as a paper and paint filler. The upper deposit, owned by Idaho Travertine Corp., contains 100 million m3 of travertine resources; it is used for facing or dimension stone. Weathered travertine outcrops are buff to tan and locally vuggy. Bureau of Mines samples of' outcrops contained greater than 95% CaC03. Approximately 600 m3 of travertine have been quarried from the two deposits and used for facing stone. Four travertine quarries and two dozer cuts were examined. Faxe Kalk has 103 White Rock placer claims on the lower deposit; approximately one-half of the claims are within the study area. Idaho Travertine has the Limestone 1 and 2 placer claims on the upper deposit. A 4,647-m-deep oil and gas exploratory well was drilled on the east end of the study area without success.

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure., but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo,, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of intolerability which -accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a nonodorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

The Ore Knob mine, in Ashe County, N.C., was one of the largest producers of copper in the eastern states during the 1870's. The ore occurs in a fissure vein, which strikes N. 64° E. and dips nearly vertical. The country rock is granite gneiss. Drilling indicated that the vein structure is approximately 200 feet wide and 1,500 feet long. The vein material shows evidence of replacement of the original gneiss by sulfides. Solution cavities in the vein were noted in some places. The ore minerals and pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and minor quantities of sphalerite. The gangue contains biotite, magnetite, albite, calcite, and many silicate minerals.

Difficulty has been encountered in making thermodynamic calculations of metallurgical reactions involving interoxidic compounds of the ferroalloy elements because of the serious lack of most thermodynamic data for these substances. This Bureau of Mines report (the first of a planned series dealing with entropies of vanadates, tungstates, and molybdates) presents low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropy values at 298.15° K. for three crystalline sodium vanadates--metavanadate (NaV03), orthovanadate (Na3VO4), and pyro-vanadate (Na4V2O7). The results are combined with data for the constituent oxides and elements to obtain entropies of formation of the vanadates. Previous to this report only one vanadate had been studied Similarly, ammonium metavanadate.4/

This report is the 17th of a series originally issued annually, and more recently bienially, to acquaint the reader with the work of the Division of Explosives Technology, Federal Bureau of Mines. It differs from preceding reports in that its material is presented in two parts: Part I reviews briefly the overall activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956;4/ part II presents in abstract form, the publications of the Division during that period. As it is not unusual for research completed in the course of one report period to be published only in the following period, the Bureau believes that the present approach will give a more accurate presentation of its work for the period considered. The Bureau hopes too, that the somewhat more concise presentation will prove convenient to the reader.5/ PART I -RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGIC ACTIVITIES The activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956 reflected the steadily growing preoccupation with factors affecting the safety of permissible explosives and those affecting the tests used for approval of these explosives. Elementary concepts of seismic wave properties are reviewed to establish a framework for discussing seismic noise and its suppression. A liberal number of references is included for those who wish to pursue the topic in detail. A base motion noise level is established for a single surface seismometer. It is argued that simple array processing and seismometer burial should regularly permit us to approach this base noise level which is found in areas free of conspicuous man-made seismic noise sources. The sensitivity of the base seismic level to a number of common disturbances is presented. Solutions that promise to hold the "effective" seismic noise at a site near the base level are given for acoustic, meteorological and fixed local surface sources. Guidelines are suggested for controlling other local man-made sources, e.g. vehicular traffic, by keeping them at sufficiently large distances away from the seismometers to keep noise at permissible levels. These guidelines are speculative and conservative. They should be the subject of future study. The ability to process against general local activity, drilling, and intra- mine sources is limited. Certainly no dramatic gain is to be expected. When strong man-made and/or intramine noise sources are not controllable, detection may well be impossible to achieve, unless the seismometer can be moved close enough to the suspected miner position, i.e. via very deep holes, to compensate for the likely vast differences in strength of the miner signal and the uncontrollable man-made noise sources. However, many intramine sources, e.g., falling water, rock bursts, explosions, etc., may well preclude the existence of a hale miner in their vicinity, and therefore any need to attempt detection of a miner at such locations. The following recommendations are made to enhance the detection and location of a miner signaling seismically. They are: 1. Seismometer burial in slim holes. 2. Narrow band detection, using multiple narrow band filters to cover the likely signal band. 3. Broadband recording and analysis for time-of-arrival estimation.

This report describes the feasibility test of an electromagnetic method for locating, boreholes, with or without casing, that have been drilled in conjunction with mining operations but whose location with respect to the tunnel is not precisely known. The first tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Kerr-McGee Corporation, Church Rock Mining Operations, New Mexico, in September 1977. These tests demonstrated that accuracies of better than ±15% of range and ±1° of bearing can be achieved with a simple system and setups. Subsequent tests, in January 1978, on a horizontally drilled pipe line river crossing application, by Ti tan Contractors of Sacramento, California, demonstrated that accuracies of better than one-half percent of range and a few tenths of one degree of bearing can be achieved by using refined techniques. The demonstration tests were done at ranges on the order of 100 to 200 feet but the method is capable of working at much greater distances.

In a survey of the coking properties of United States coals, the Bureau of Mines has accumulated data on more than 500 coals and blends tested by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method.4/ The importance of these tests depends upon the fact that a greater number of different coals has been tested in this apparatus than in any other of similar scale, thus permitting comparison of the carbonizing properties of many coals. Evaluation of BM-AGA results with respect to industrial data supplied by member firms of the American Gas Association was one of the first objectives in developing this test apparatus and procedure. Early data showed that, de-pendent upon BM-AGA carbonizing temperature, BM-AGA and commercial results agree closely.5/ Because of limited data, statistical relationships were not established at that time.

Bureau of Mines laboratory tests show that ilmenite concentrates with titanium dioxide contents as low as 33 wt--pct can be beneficiated to produce a crystalline substitute for natural rutile suitable for direct chlorination. The synthesized product prepared by a three-step procedure was comparable with natural rutile in titanium content. Reduction smelting of ilmenite removes iron as a pig iron byproduct, and the remaining slag phase is greatly enriched in titanium. Oxidation of the slag in the presence of phosphorus¬bearing slag additive converts the titanium-bearing phases to discrete rutile crystals and a glass phase containing most of the associated impurities. Rutile is separated from the glassy impurities by attrition scrubbing ground slag in dilute phosphoric or sulfuric acid solutions. Tests made in a laboratory fluid-bed reactor show that synthetic rutile responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile and that more than 95 pct of the titanium contained in the feedstock was extracted as titanium tetrachloride.

[As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, FeO .9S, Fe304 , S02 (g, 1 atm) //Zr02//02 (g, 0.0114 atm) , Pt with the overall cell reaction 10/3 FeO .9 S (s) + 16/3 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = Fe.,04 (s) +10/3 S02 (g). (4) These results yield the standard Gibbs energy of formation for the reaction 0.9 Fe (s) + 0.5 S2 (g) = Fe0.9 S (s) (5) ?G°f = -35.229 + 12.67 x 1073T+-0.104 kcal/mole (839.5 - 1,086.6 K). (6) A third-law analysis of MnS data yields a standard enthalpy of formation (AH°f) for the reaction Mn (s) + S (rh) = MnS (s) (7) ?H°f298 = -51.16±0.21 kcal/mole (8) A similar third-law analysis for Fe0.9S data yields a ?29°f298 for the reaction 0.9 Fe(s) + S(rh) = FeO .9S(s) (9) ?HO\°f298 = -24.01±_0.15 kcal/mole. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the effects on the physical properties of coarse coal waste of adding large amounts of fine coal waste. Maximum laboratory dry density, optimum moisture content, shear strength, and permeability tests were conducted on samples that contained 18 to 60 pct minus No.4 (U.S. Standard sieve size) coal waste. For the nonslaky materials, maximum laboratory densities were highest and permeabilities lowest when the samples contained between 30 and 40 pct minus No.4. Shear strength increased rapidly when the proportion of minus No. 4 was increased from 20 to 40 pct, but then increased only slightly or leveled off when the minus No. 4 was increased to 60 pct. Optimum moisture content and permeability were the physical properties most affected by the addition of fines. Optimum moisture content increased as much as 3 pct, and permeabilities decreased up to three orders of magnitude. Slaky coal waste material had physical property reactions to the addition of fines substantially different from those of nonslaky material.

"The sulphidizing filming of minerals in oxide ores as a preliminary treatment to aid their recovery by flotation is known practice. In this work the use of barium polysulphide does not appear to have been considered. A study of the properties of barium lead to the following comparative investigation of the sulphides and polysulphides of the alkaline and alkaline-earth metals. It is thought that barium polysulphide may prove to be a more satisfactory sulphidizing reagent than others now in use under conditions that favor the cheaper barium reagent.For the investigation two fairly typical oxidized ores of copper and lead were selected. The copper ore came from the Big Indian Mine in southeastern Utah, and assayed 3.8% Cu; the copper was present in a sandstone gangue mainly as the carbonates, malachite and azurite, with less than 0.2% as sulphides, or silicate. The lead ore is from the Tintic Standard mine in the Tintic district, Utah. It is typical of the oxidized lead-silver ores of that district; the lead is present in an oxidised form in a siliceous gangue, much: Uncolored by ferric oxide. The sample assayed 5.15% Pb and 11.3 oz. Ag.In addition to the results obtained in this investigation, there are included some results secured by Mr. J. B. Lain, consulting metallurgist of Reno, Nevada, on a sample of ore from the Chino Copper Co. The ore assayed about 1.7% Cu, of which about 0.25% was nonsuiphide."

As mines become safer and major disasters fewer, the number of experienced emergency responders is decreasing. This decrease will create a gap in response expertise which could have serious ramifications during future mine disasters. While working toward safety goals which may make emergency response obsolete, it would be reckless not to acknowledge that the potential for disaster still exists and that the protection of miners in such circumstances must remain a priority. The Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation (MERITS) is a computerized mine emergency simulation that meets a variety of needs. It allows personnel in leadership positions to test their knowledge and skill. Groups of individuals composed of representatives from mining companies, labor, and government agencies can practice working together during the simulated mine emergency much in the same way an actual emergency would require. An individual could also run the program to enhance his or her response skills. With this training tool, responders will be able to learn from their mistakes before facing situations with potentially catastrophic consequences. This paper discusses MERITS and its use in providing command center training.

Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.
