As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Westmoreland County for coking tests was based, in part, on estimates of the coal reserves by Dowd,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in thousands of tons, as follows: [ ]

The material in this Information Circular was presented at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) open-industry briefing held during the 2004 Northwest Mining Association conference in Spokane, WA. The open-industry briefing discussed results of recently completed and on-going mine safety- and health-related research conducted at NIOSH’s Spokane and Pittsburgh Research Laboratories on the human side of mining—the miner. The first paper sets the stage for what mining has achieved and what we mean by “getting to zero.” The second paper, “Help Experienced Miners Become Great On-the-Job Trainers,” distinguishes between experienced miners and trainers. This paper provides some key concepts for turning great miners into great trainers. “The Power of Story-Telling in Getting Through to Miners” explains the history and importance of stories in the culture and training of miners. Finally, “Understanding Self in Stressful Working Environments,” describes the personal and social aspects of the working environment, much of which parallels familial theories. The downward trend of deaths in U.S. mining has been remarkable. The number of miners killed or injured each year has decreased steadily over the past 100 years. Some charts show these trends overlain with important events such as World War II and the Mine Safety and Health Act. However, this downward trend in mining fatalities has flattened out. How can you get to zero accidents? Do you concentrate on technological advances and equipment maintenance to avoid malfunctions? Do you concentrate on developing work processes and organizational structures that minimize risk? Do you combine them and take a systems approach that links one to the other with an evaluative loop? Safety efforts in mining have used all of these approaches. What more can we do to get to zero? Getting to zero will require two objectives: A clear and unshakeable belief that it can be done and attention to the human side of mining. Getting to zero is not a new idea; it has been used by mine companies and safety professionals for years as the safety goal. But getting to zero is not so much a physical goal as it is a belief that there are no insurmountable barriers to achieving the goal.

This paper describing the dredging operation of J. K. Davison & Bro. on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, Pa., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of dredging sand and gravel in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. THIS REPORT presents the technique and equipment used in determining the hardness of titanium sponge. Detailed descriptions are given of the methods used in preparing test samples for chemical analysis and hardness testing, the method of melting and surfacing test ingots, and the technique of reading Brinell-hardness impressions. The arc-melting furnace described, for which engineering drawings are included, will produce from 70 to 90 double-melted buttons each 8 hours of operation. Experimental data are also presented depicting the effect on hardness of the methods of surfacing specimens, temperature of test specimens, and the effect of time at test load. These data show that surfacing of the specimen involves no critical machining operations but that the test surface must be paralleled by a relatively flat surface for contact with the anvil of the Brinell tester. The heating of a specimen to 150° C. during surfacing does not materially affect the results if the ingot is cooled to room temperature before the hardness impressions are made. The optimum time at load appears to be approximately 30 seconds, but load times of as much as 1/ ½ minutes will not cause major errors.

"Characterization of the size, shape, chemical composition, and mineralogical content of mine airborne dusts generally requires a larger mass of dust particles than is typically collected using traditional sampling devices. In this paper, the general design of a passive dust collector is described and the field results are presented. The collector was constructed of galvanized sheet metal duct with a resin-coated honeycomb to provide an elutriation-type system for particle collection. Several versions of the collector were used in the field portions of the research.The dust samples collected from underground coal mines were found to possess angular particle shapes, relatively consistent size distributions, and elemental compositions that showed relatively little variation, at least for the more prevalent elements. In addition, the distributions of particles sizes obtained from the passive dust collector appear to be similar to those of samples collected at the same time in a conventional personal sampler except that the passive device seems to collect a larger quantity of coarse, nonrespirable particles. Conclusions on the suitability of this dust collector for collecting characterization samples are presented. In addition, the potential for using such a dust collection system for supplying dusts for biomedical research is discussed.INTRODUCTIONRecently, a considerable amount of research effort has been directed toward better understanding of the characteristics of the coal dust generated during the mining process. It is generally believed that dust characteristics play a significant role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dust, it is important to understand the properties of dust, the mechanisms of generation and dust-lung reaction. Conducting research on dust characterization, dust control and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology generally requires a large sample of airborne coal dust. Unfortunately, current dust sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand because only a few milligrams of dust are collected."

A sedimentation method involving the use of the Palo-Travis apparatus was found satisfactory for rapid determination of the size distribution of coal particles ranging from 10 microns in diameter to those passing an 840-micron opening (20-mesh sieve), The method is most useful for comparing the size distributions of samples of pulverized coal where the actual size of the particles is not required and is applicable to sieve and subsieve sizes of a wide variety of coals and chars that can be wetted and are heavier than water. An analysis, including all calculations, can be completed in 1/2 to 10 hours, depending on the time required for the finely divided coal to settle. A typical analysis requires about an hour, making this a rapid, precise method for routine size-distribution analysis of powdered coals. When used with coal particles smaller than 400 microns, the method is precise within 15 microns for wide variations in test conditions and within 5 microns for identical test conditions. The precision decreases as particle size increases, becoming unsatisfactory for particles larger than 400 microns (40-mesh). For precision within 15 microns, the samples must be equal in weight. Greater precision is obtained with 4-gram samples, but samples as small as l gram may be used.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting studies of the slags related to ferrous technology to evaluate acceptable substitutes for the auxiliary flux, mineral fluorspar, in foundry operations. This work is directed toward the Bureau&apos;s goal of minimizing the Nation&apos;s dependence on scarce and critical minerals Comparative basic practice cupola (18-inch-ID) trials were made to evaluate a waste material called "used potlining," which contains significant levels of fluorine, sodium, and aluminum in various compounds. Used potlining is recovered from alumina reduction cells after its useful life, and was supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America (Alcoa) to the Bureau for evaluation. The material in the lump and pelletized form (with limestone) provided extremely fluid slags based on visual observation during cupola operation. No adverse effects were found on cupola performance, metal and slag chemistry, the environment, or mechanical properties of the castings produced. Fluorine recovery in the slag was equal to, or higher than, that of fluorspar; fluorine losses to the scrubber water and solids were lower. The acidity of the scrubber Hater was somewhat neutralized. No difference was observed in furnace-refractory attack, as determined by the level of magnesia in the slag and visual inspection. The recovery of sodium in the slag, presumably as the oxide, significantly increased slag fluidity, suggesting that less than equivalent fluorine may be required. There was no contamination of the gray iron by the aluminum from the used potlining. Used potlining was completely satisfactory as a substitute for fluorspar in cupola ironmelting.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a method for determining parts per million (ppm) of helium-4 (He-4) in helium-3 (He-3) to an accuracy of ±5% by mass spectrometry. Gravimetrically prepared primary standards were used for the calibration of a Dempster 1800 magnetic sector mass spectrometer. A comparison between a 2.49% He-4 in hydrogen mixture and a 2.49% He-4 in He-3 mixture shows that He-3 can be replaced with hydrogen as a diluent for standards with comparable mass spectrometry sensitivities for He-4. Using hydrogen as a diluent allows analysis of He-3 samples for He-4 when He-3 for preparation of standards is not available and also conserves the rare He-3 isotope. Standards of He-4 in Hz were prepared for calibration of the mass spectrometer for quantitative determinations of He-4 in the 2-to 100-ppm range. A minimum detectable limit of 2 ppm He-4 is obtained by this method.

Software techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines Denver Research Center for real-time microseismic data analysis are presented. These techniques focus on the simple acquisition of P-wave arrival times and their use in event location. The paper discusses in detail software techniques to separate microseismic events from mining noise such as drilling and from very large events such as rock bursts. Incorporation of these techniques has enhanced the reliability and accuracy of computer-based monitoring of microseismic activity in ongoing research by the Bureau.

"The phenomenon of re-entrainment is seen in environments such as sand dune formation, soil erosion, fugitive dust emission and the spread of radionuclides from accidents involving nuclear weapons. A thorough review of existing literature reveals that work on re-entrainment of dust in mine atmospheres is scant. The present study was undertaken as a part of ongoing research at the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust at the Pennsylvania State University on the development of methods to predict ambient dust concentrations in mine atmospheres (Ramani, 1983). The contribution of re-entrainment to the spatial and temporal concentration of dust in mine airways is being studied. The research has included wind tunnel and in-mine studies.A set of seven experiments was performed under controlled conditions in the US Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. Two types of source coal dust, anthracite and bituminous, were subjected to various airflow rates and were subjected to walking by two different individuals. Six sets of instruments were used along the test section for sampling airborne particles. The average air velocity just above the coal dust bed varied between 2.1 to 3.2 m/sec.Due to re-entrainment as a result of the airflow conditions, the average respirable dust concentration in the center of the mine airway increased to 0.09 mg!m3 (standard deviation= 0.03 mg/m3)from an initial value of 0.02 mg/m3. The concentration of all (total) airborne dust increased to 0.17 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0.10 mg/m3) from an initial value of 0. 02 mg/m3. The action of people walking, however, caused higher amounts of re-entrainment. The average concentration of respirable and total dust at the center of the mine airway increased to values of 0. 28 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 0.12 mg/m3) and 1.53 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 1.0 mg/m3), from initial values of 0.03 and 0.05 mg/m3, respectively. Jr was observed that the dust concentrations were much higher near the floor, immediately at the end of the coal-dust bed.Depending on the level of activity and the amount of dust deposited in the mine airways, re-entrainment may become an important source of airborne dust in areas away from the point of actual mining."

The bulk and apparent densities , particle size , and surface area of ceria powders derived from the ammonium sulfate , carbonate , nitrate , oxalate , and sulfate salts and heated at 950 ° to 1,500 ° C for 1 to 24 hours were studied . The bulk and apparent densities and particle size generally increased , and surface area decreased with increase in temperature and time of heating ; surface area was more sensitive to changes in temperature and time than the other properties studied . These properties of the ceria powders had a marked dependence on temperature and a lesser dependence on duration of heating at a given temperature ; and the source of oxide and thermal treatment cannot be considered optional in the preparation of refractory powders by thermal decomposition . The ammonium sulfate and sulfate salts heated at 950 ° and 1,200 ° C produced oxide powders with the lowest bulk density , the smallest particle size , and the highest surface area . The highest apparent densities were achieved for oxides resulting from the carbonate and the sulfate but the carbonate - derived material was considerably coarser . The surface areas of ceria powders derived from cerium salts decrease in the order of sulfate , ammonium sulfate , nitrate , oxalate , and carbonate . The observation of these physical properties are useful in predicting the sintering behavior of various oxide powders .

As an exploratory effort to produce useful products from coal by a new path, the Bureau has made a few experiments on the fast heating of finely ground coal particles by irradiation with a flash of high intensity light. The flash was produced by an electrical discharge at high voltage through a xenon-filled tube. The flashes lasted from 2 to 3 milliseconds. The reaction took place in small sample tubes, ½ inch-dimeter by 4 inches long, and with small amounts of coal (total amount charged 0.1 gram, probable effective amount not more than 20 milligrams). Average particle size of the coal, estimated on a numerical basis, was 20 microns. Temperatures reached were evidently quite high, because all products obtained in quantity were characteristic of high temperature pyrolysis. Apparently, conversion of the coal was extensive where isolated particles received the full benefit of a flash. It seems particularly significant that acetylene was present in appreciable amounts--comprising almost 3 percent of the total gaseous product in one case. This is good evidence of a short heating period to very high temperature (well above 1,000° C) followed by rapid quenching. Although the results are interesting, they do not suggest any immediate practical application.

The Bureau of Mines investigated means of electrodepositing iridium to form thick coatings suitable for the protection of such metals as tungsten and molybdenum, which oxidize rapidly at high temperatures. Using a fused sodium cyanide bath, thick, adherent, and coherent deposits of iridium up to 15 mils thick were plated on tungsten and molybdenum substrates at 600° C and current densities of 10 to 100 ma/cm2. Limited oxidation testing of molybdenum encapsulated with pure iridium indicates that the coating may offer protection to approximately l,000° C in flowing air, but that at higher temperatures, the volatility of its oxide limits use of pure iridium. Alloy coatings of iridium with platinum, palladium, and rhodium up to 4 mils thick were formed from a fused sodium cyanide electrolyte; because their oxides are less volatile, these alloys may protect substrates at higher temperatures. Deposits made from aqueous electrolytes either had very low rates of deposition or were highly stressed and cracked when heavy deposits were made.

The source and petrographic analysis of each sample are given. Included are values for isomorphous series of minerals showing wide ranges of composition and for a few high-purity synthetic minerals.

In the 39 years from 1891 to 1929 , gas and dust explosions in the coal mines of Tennessee caused 413 deaths , or one- third of the fatalities in the mines for that period . Inasmuch as explosions caused but about 15 per cent of mine fatalities for the whole United States for this same period it is evident that the Tennessee coal mining record is by no means good , as far as explosion fatalities are concerned . Since 1926 , Tennessee has had a clear record as to fatalities from explosions ; this fact may be credited very largely to the improved conditions and safer practices in Tennessee's coal mines which have been brought about by the work of the State Inspection Department and of the Southern Appalachian Coal Operators Association directed toward adoption of safety precautions and practices most of which are advocated by the United States Bureau of Mines . Chief among these improvements are the replacement of black powder and dynamite by permissible explosives , improved ventilation , and the installation of rigid methods of inspection for gas . With the present tendency for operations to pass into the hands of responsible and informed management , and with unrelaxed care and inspection , the good record of the past several years should be maintained .

This paper describing the timekeeping and pay-roll methods of the Britannia raining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of nines regarding office procedures in connection with mining operations. The general office of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is located at Britannia Beach, B. C., a town of about 600 inhabitants at tidewater on the east side of Howe Sound and about 30 miles from Vancouver, B. C. The Beach, as it is locally termed, is a company town consisting largely of about 250 employees of the company and their families. Here is the milling and concentrating plant of over 6,000 tons daily capacity- the main service units comprising the electrical, mechanical, blacksmith and woodworking shops and the local electric-furnace foundry; the central-heating steam plant; the air and electric generating units; the ball-manufacturing plant; the warehouses; and the general store, which serves this community and also acts as distributor for the general stores located elsewhere on the property.

"Effects of Bisbenzylisoquinoline Alkaloids on Alveolar Macrophages: Correlation between Binding Affinity. Inhibitory Potency and Antifibrotic Potential. CASTRANOVA, V., KANG, J-H., MA. J. K. H., Mo, C-H., MALANGA, L. J., MOORE M. D., SCHWEGLER-BERRY, D.. AND MA. J. Y. C. (1991). Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol 108, 242-252. The Chinese have conducted extensive studies concerning the medicinal properties of plant products. In this investigation the ability of three bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to inhibit particle-induced activation of alveolar macrophages was evaluated and this inhibitory potential was correlated with the ability of those drugs to bind to membrane components. Tetrandrine. i.e.. an herbal medicine used as an antifibrotic agent in China, was a potent inhibitor of particle-stimulated oxygen consumption, superoxide release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion by alveolar macrophages. Tetrandrine also exhibited substantial binding affinity for membrane lipids and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, tubocurine, an analogue with little antifibrotic potential, exhibited low binding affinity and had little effect on macrophage activation. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrotic potential, exhibited inhibitory and binding properties similar to those of tetrandrine. The data indicate that a strong relationship exists between the antifibrotic potential of these alkaloids and their ability to bind to alveolar macrophages and inhibit particle-induced activation of these phagocytes. These drugs should serve as useful probes to evaluate the role of alveolar macrophages in pulmonary fibrosis. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.Chronic silicosis is a fibrotic disease resulting from occupational exposure to silica dust. It is manifested initially by an increase in the quantity of pulmonary surfactant (Dethloff et al., 1986). However, in later stages it is characterized by an increase in collagen formation and the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung (Ziskind et al., 1976). Although mechanisms for the progression of silicosis have not yet been completely defined, activation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica particles is believed to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. Studies from our laboratory have shown that both in vitro and in vivo silica exposures result in a stimulation of macrophage release of reactive products capable of damaging the lung parenchyma (Castranova et al., 1990; Goodman et al., 1990). In addition, exposure of al¬veolar macrophages to silica results in the release of fibrogenic factors which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (Leibovich and Ross, 1976; Bitterman et al., 1982, 1983).The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which represent the largest group among the iso-quinoline compounds isolated from the plant kingdom, are known to exhibit a broad rangeof pharmacological activities. Tetrandrine, for example, an alkaloid isolated from the root of Stephania tetrandra, has been tested for its antitumor, antihypertensive, and antisilicotic effects (Kupchan and Atland, 1973; Zeng et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1983). It is currently used in China as a treatment for angina, hypertension, and silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Li et al., 1981). Several related bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as methoxyadiantifoline and tubocurine have also been evaluated for medicinal effects. Methoxyadiantifoline has been shown to exhibit effects on the cardiovascular system similar to those reported for tetrandrine (Jia et al., 1988). However, to date, the antifibrotic activity of methoxyadiantifoline has not been evaluated. In contrast to tetrandrine, tubocurine, a structural analogue of this drug, has been reported to be relatively ineffective against fibrosis (Mo et al., 1982)."

Abstract-Underground mines are typically extensive labyrinths that employ many people working over an area of many square miles; exten¬sive analysis of mine-communications systems has identified specific problem areas, in particular the excessive times required to locate key personnel underground, the inadequacy of existing phone systems in terms of capacity and privacy, and the inability to communicate with men on the move with wireless communications, as is taken for granted on the surface. A review is presented of the existing systems, the prob¬lem definition, and the various approaches that have been or are being investigated to solve these problems. The usual run time errors occur when illegal mathematical operations are attempted by MFIRE For exam¬ple, if the user enters a negative value for the input variable HEAT to model a heat sink or cooling station, a run tame error will occur because an exponential function is employed to better model the changing temperature dis¬tribution in the airways. DATA FILE ERRORS Two types of data file errors can occur. 1 An error may occur because the input data file itself is invalid This may be caused by: The data file cannot be found due to incorrect spelling, drive, or path specification Check the spelling and path at the prompt for location of the data file. The data file contains non-ASCII symbols Check op¬eration of the text processor to insure that only ASCII characters are produced Delete all non-ASCII and/or all out of place characters. 2 Data are accepted by the program, but are incorrect for the data types or ranges or the combination causes a data inconsistency This may be due to. An invalid character is located where a numerical value is required The input data value is outside the reasonable range The input data is insufficient to build the model for simulation. The input data exceeds the capacity of the program. PROGRAM ERROR DETECTION When the program is running, tracing messages are given on the screen indicating the group and lines of data that have been read and the section of the program that is executing Program termination indicates that problems are caused by the subsequent (not read) data file section. For each detected error, descriptive message starting with * ERROR * is issued and the program terminates. When a possibly wrong value and/or its calculated intermediate result is detected, a descriptive message starting with * WARNING * is issued and the program continues. If a modification of input value or calculated intermediate result is automatically made by the program, descrip¬tive message starting with * ATTENTION * is issued and the program continues. LOCATING ERRORS If a message indicates that the error condition occurred due to the data input file, locate and correct the data item. If no error message is issued, but the simulation results are not as expected, carefully check the list of input data shown in the output file WARNING messages and ATTENTION messages may reveal an error in the input data even though the program continues to operate Insure that the default values or modifications adopted by the program run are acceptable. Anomalistic data, though not incorrect or impossible, may lead to an unusual simulation For example, making a fan unusually powerful may prevent a normal strength fire from affecting the airflow distribution in the system Much care must be employed before considering an ex¬treme case.
