Specialized sulfur concretes were developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a result of research for the beneficial utilization of sulfur in construction materials. Materials were developed for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where portland cement concrete has been found to deteriorate. Because the mineral aggregates also come into contact with the corrosive media, concretes were developed utilizing both limestone and quartz aggregates. The sulfur binder used with both aggregates was modified by reaction with 5 pct dicyclopentadiene to improve product durability. Sulfur quartz aggregate concrete was found to have moderately high strength characteristics (6,000 psi compressive) and was extremely resistant to chemical attack by both acid and salt solutions. Sulfur limestone aggregate concrete exhibited very high strength characteristics (9,000 psi compressive) and was extremely resistant to chemical attack of salt solutions. Both types of concretes maintained their strength and integrity after long-term testing in acid and salt solutions and exhibited considerable resistance to damage by the action of freezing and thawing. Potential uses include leach tanks, electrolytic cells, thickeners, bridge decking, industrial flooring, pipe, and tile.

In January 1948 , the Secretary of the Interior directed that a study be made of energy resources and requirements that would provide a basis for continuing appraisal of the adequacy of the Department's programs in the energy field . That this instruction was timely has been demonstrated by the increasing interest being evidenced by Congress , industry , labor , and the public in the future of the energy segment of our national economy . Several studies of individual energy sectors have appeared . Various legislative proposals have been made in Congress for obtaining more information on this subject . Substantial interest in energy projections is not , of course , a recent innovation . Energy availability and consumption are strategic factors in peacetime prosperity and growth and in our national defense as well . The past generation's literature of earnest public discussion and of legislative consideration of matters involving energy projections is very extensive . This is an exploratory study produced in the Program Staff of the Office of the Secretary of the Interior in the first half of 1949 and revised recently to take account of certain of the preliminary energy data from the 1947 Census of Manufactures and critical comments . It is offered at this time solely as a technical contribution in economic research technique . As the Bureau of Mines has recently undertaken to revise this preliminary study , critical and other comments are invited .

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of Oklahoma is the sixth in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United. States. Preceding reports* may be obtained on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples, making laboratory tests, and interpreting results are discussed in the first three papers. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped they will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines for correction before the appearance of the permanent report. Samples of Oklahoma crudes analyzed in this report were taken from those fields representing the major production of the State. The Oklahoma Geological Survey designates 172 different oil and gas fields in the State, S1 being in Osage County, 14 in Tulsa County, 14 in Okmulgee County, 9 in Washington County. The list of samples collected by the Bureau of Mines represents only 5 fields in Osage County - Bigheart, Burbank, Hominy, Osage Junction, and Pershing - yet these samples, together with those from adjoining fields, are representative of nearly all crude produced in the county. "Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. This paper deals with the tests of pressures of explosions only."

This report presents results of a series of tests on grindability of lignites and factors that influence grindability determination. All grindability tests in this investigation were made in the standard Hardgrove test apparatus. In addition to tests on standard samples of equilibrium moisture content, grindability determinations were made on air-and oven-dried samples of lignite representing the complete range of moisture content from normal bed moisture to nearly moisture-free conditions. Grindability index for all tests was calculated both by standard method and by an alternate or "corrected" method of calculation based on directly measured weight of fine-particle material produced in the grindability test. The second method of calculation allows more satisfactorily for loss of moisture during testing of high-moisture samples.

"The tests described below were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a lease in Oklahoma on installations designed to decrease evaporation losses of crude oil Pram storage tanks. Use of the lease was granted by the Oklahoma Producing and Refining Corporation of America. Tankage was obtained through the courtesy of the Parkensburg Pig and Reel Co. The purpose of the installations and tests was to demonstrate the value of making crude-oil storage tanks gas-tight, rather than to determine the amount of evaporation in any one type of tank. None of the tanks used were absolutely gas-tight, but one of them was very nearly so. They comprised a tank of the ordinary open type with an 18-inch manhole, a tank with a ""4-inch vent"", a tank with a ""smaller vent"", and a tank which had only ""pin holes"" through which air and vapor could pass freely. On the last two tanks any excess pressure was taken care of by an automatic differential pressure regulator.The results obtained in these tests indicate that tight tankage will soon pay for itself. They will not, however, serve as a basis on which a producer can compute the actual number of days necessary for tight tankage to pay out, because the oil used was exceptionally volatile. It is probable that the average evaporation loss in the Mid-Continent field is at least one-half as great as that shown by these tests, and if this is true, the saving that would be effected by providing tight tankage on the lease will undoubtedly justify the expense. The installation of evaporation-proof tanks on the lease has been delayed by the failure of production managers to realize, first, that their evaporation losses are enormous, and, second, that they can practically eliminate these losses by a simple and inexpensive installation."

The Bureau of Mines two-stage coal-pyrite flotation process was modified to provide a more concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow which could be dewatered economically by filtration or centrifugation. This was accomplished by doing the first-stage coal flotation step in the conventional manner with a slurry of about 8 percent solids, but running the second-stage pyrite Flotation step with undiluted coal froth concentrate containing about 25 percent solids. The final clean coal underflow produced by the new technique contained between 26 and 30 percent solids; this pulp was sufficiently concentrated to be filtered industrially without further thickening. Sulfur removal was equal to that obtained using dilute second-stage pulp,

The Bureau of Mines has developed a pallet loading dust control system designed to lower the dust exposure of workers during the bag stacking process at mineral processing facilities. The system makes bag stacking much easier because the pallet height remains constant throughout the entire bag stacking cycle through the use of a hydraulic lift table. The system uses a push-pull ventilation technique to capture the dust generated during bag stacking. A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately 150 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-in air jets (approximately 1,200-ftjmin velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they entrain the dust generated during bag stacking. The exhaust ventilation system pulls approximately 2,500 cfm of air and dust through the exhaust hood. This exhaust air can then be dumped into a baghouse ventilation system, or filtered before being discharged outside the mill. During a laboratory evaluation, a 70-pct dust reduction was recorded for the bag stacker. The system was then evaluated in an actual working environment. The first field evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation in which one worker performed the entire loading and bag stacking process. This worker's dust exposure was lowered 76 pet when using the new pallet loading system. The second field evaluation showed only moderate dust reduction, but this was mainly attributed to an overriding problem associated with background dust and the cleanliness of the bags. From both the ergonomic and production standpoint, the system was well received by both the workforce and plant management.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. This report describes preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines to develop a procedure for extracting the fluorine from low-grade fluorspar ores in which the CaF2 particles are finely locked in the calcite matrix. A combination of flotation beneficiation and pyrohydrolysis is applied to recover and to liberate the fluorine. Flotation of a finely locked high-calcite fluorspar ore containing only 11.7 pct CaF2 recovered over 92 pct of the fluorspar at a grade of 51 to 52 pct CaF2. Pyrohydrolysis of the flotation concentrate liberated nearly 90 pct of the fluorine as aqueous HF. By this procedure over 80 pct of the fluorine contained in the original ore was extracted.

(B) Selected injury experience: Tables 10 to 15: Contain comparable injury data in the coking industry covering 5- and 10-year periods on the number of injuries, accident agencies, and severity of injuries. (C) Historic injury experience: Tables 16 to 19: Contain data on the number of injuries, frequency rates, and employment at coke ovens from the earliest records through 1952, Operating statistics from 1929 through 1952 are given in table 19.

A single-cylinder research engine was operated on pure hydrocarbons and simple (two-component) mixtures of pure hydrocarbons to study the effect of fuel composition on exhaust emissions from a spark-ignition engine. Used as fuels were three pure hydrocarbons that represented the primary hydrocarbon types present in commercial motor fuels: A paraffin (2,2,4-trimethylpentane), an olefin (2,4,4-trimethylpentene-2), and an aromatic (meta-xylene). The engine was operated at the same equivalence ratio for all of the fuels used in the experiment. Exhaust gas samples were collected and quantitatively analyzed for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen oxides, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons. Exhaust hydrocarbons were separated and quantitatively measured with a chromatographic system employing a flame-ionization detector. Unknown hydrocarbons and oxygenated materials in the exhaust were identified with a Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer coupled to a chromatographic system. The results of the exhaust gas analyses showed that ethylbenzene, l-methyl-3-ethylbenzene, and l-methyl-3-vinylbenzene were more abundant in the exhausts from either 2,2,4-trimethylpentane--m-xylene or 2,4,4-trimethylpentene-2--m-xylene fuel mixtures than in exhaust produced from m-xylene. Also, the pure 2,4,4-trimethylpentene-2 fuel produced smaller amounts of C2 to C7 olefins in the exhaust than that produced by the pure 2,2,4-trimethylpentane fuel. The exhaust from pure m-xylene fuel contained aromatic hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight than the parent fuel. The amount of total hydrocarbon (moles of exhaust hydrocarbon per mole of fuel used) in the exhaust from the three pure fuels decreased in the following order: 2,2,4-trimethylpentane > 2,4,4-trimethylpentene-2 > m-xylene. The hydrocarbon mole-fractions of unreacted fuel in the exhausts produced from each of the pure fuels were 0.20 for 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, 0.13 for 2,4,4-trimethylpentene-2, and 0.66 for m-xylene.

The effect of comparatively low concentrations of carbon monoxide for short periods and under normal air conditions.of temperature and humidity , with the subject at rest , was studied by Dr. Yandell Henderson and his co -workers . In making recommendations to the New York and New Jersey tunnel commissions * he advised that , if the New York New Jersey vehicular tunnel be so ventilated that persons passing through the tunnel would be exposed to not more than 4 parts of carbon monoxide in 10,000 parts of air for not longer than 45 minutes , they would experience no ill effects . supplementary experiments , carried out by us in connection with our studies at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, substantiated this advice . ** In continuing our studies on low concentrations of carbon monoxide , we made a few experiments in a gas chamber where the conditions could be accurately controlled . The Bureau of Mines has devised techniques to recover lithium from geothermal brines as the chloride. More than 99 pct of the lithium was precipitated from a brine containing 170 mg/L Li by adding a solution of AICl3 and increasing the pH to 7.5 with lime slurry. The Li-Al precipitate was dissolved in HCl and sparged with gaseous HCI to recover the AlCl3; this resulted in a solution containing LiCl and CaCI2. The solution was evaporated at 1000 C to obtain a mixture of the chlorides from which 97 pct of the lithium was recovered and 90 pct of the calcium was rejected by leaching with tetrahydrofuran. The LiCl recovered by evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran was purified by dissolution in water and treatment with oxalic acid. The final LiCl solution contained 89 pct of the lithium originally present in the brine and had a purity of 99.9 pet.

The results of an experimental investigation into the possible use of medium energy acoustic fields (130 to 140 dB) to precipitate 1 to 10 micron particles is presented. The aerosol was produced with a LeMer generator using oleic acid and nitrogen. The sound field was a sinusoidal standing wave field in an acrylic tube, with light transmission data used for concentration determination. The results showed collection efficiencies of up to 80% on 2 micron particles with a residence time of 11.8 seconds at a sound pressure level of 139 dB re 2x10-5 N/m2. A discussion of the possible turbulent mechanism is made, as well as review and comparison with others? work.

The mineral value in the ores from the Mother Lode mining districts of California is almost entirely gold, Although many mines have produced extremely high-grade ore the usual mill grade averages approximately $7.00 gold per ton. Fully 80 per cent of the gold has been and is now being recovered by amalgamation. Various methods have been introduced to recover the gold that was not obtained by the amalgamation processes. They include vari¬ous kinds of gravity concentration which in some cases were followed by chlorination or cyanidation. The usual practice includes only stamp battery, plate-amalgamation, and vanner concentration. In the very early practice the tails were run to waste through the main drainage streams of the different mining districts. During later years very large storage dumps have been impounded. These old tails, together with those being saved from present mills, furnish the problem discussed in this article. The clean sand portion of these mill tails is amenable to the usual cyanidation. The slime portion contains the major amount of the gold lost, but it also contains 1-1/2 to 3 per cent carbon, which precludes direct cyanidation of this part of these low-grade waste tails. The black carbonaceous slime portion is the particular problem considered in this report.

This analytical method development and evaluation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to provide accurate determinations of eight minor elements in low-alloy steels prepared from ferrous scrap. Fluorescent X-ray spectrography was the principal method investigated. Confirming analyses were made by conventional instrumental and chemical methods. All X-ray data were processed by a timesharing computer. No corrections were found necessary for inter-element effects or overlapping spectral lines. Concentrations were calculated from the least-square fit of a linear calibration equation derived from measurements on three sets of standard steels. These studies show that X-ray spectrographic analysis of lathe-finished surfaces provides accurate determinations of aluminum, copper, chromium, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, silicon, and tin.

This report describes preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Marion County, W. Va., as determined by the Bureau of Mines. It is one in a series telling what coals are suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Marion County, W. Va., in 1958, of which almost 6 million tons was cleaned mechanically in nine cleaning plants. All of the coal mechanically cleaned came from the Pittsburgh bed. The Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,578 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick as of January 1, 1955.
