The present paper focuses the application of CFD techniques to investigate the Top-Submerged- Lance (TSL) gas injection in liquid metal. Previous works of the authors have shown that up- and down- scaling procedures based on the modified Froude number have some shortcomings, as this approach does not take into account the interfacial and viscous forces. Indeed, surface tension and dynamic viscosity of the smelting slags (σ = 0.4-0.5 N/m, μ = 0.2 Pa·s) are higher than the operating fluids that have been used in literature (water, paraffin oil) to study TSL injection in down-scaled furnaces. In order to get closer to real systems, the authors study the TSL injection of Argon in a liquid metal. An experimental campaign was carried out in the X-ray lab at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), where the eutectic alloy GaInSn was used as liquid phase. The alloy is liquid at room temperature, and X-Ray imaging is used to picture the multiphase flow in a quasi-2D vessel. The aim of the present work is to demonstrate the applicability of CFD techniques to model multiphase flows involving liquid metals, and validate the model using the data produced at HZDR. The commercial software ANSYS Fluent® was used together with the Volume of Fluid model to directly resolve the gas-liquid interphase. Some features of the flow, such as the void fraction distribution and bubble detachment frequency are tracked with CFD and compared to the experimental data. INTRODUCTION In the last thirty years the TSL smelting technology has increasingly been used for industrial non- ferrous smelting processes and is now one of the significant pyrometallurgical processes. Developed in the early 1970’s at CSIRO, the furnace is nowadays commercialized in different market sectors, including copper and lead smelting, zinc fuming, waste treatment and slag recovery (Floyd, 2005). Despite the wide application of these reactors in the pyrometallurgical market, some aspects of the process are still not fully clarified, since in-situ measurements and optical accesses are prohibitive because of the high temperatures and aggressive conditions. Phenomena such as the bubbling regime, the slag solidification and the submerged combustion still need a deeper scientific investigation to obtain a better understanding of the process.

Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of bulk commodities and the extensive use of sampling equipment is key to the successful management of each mining operation. At the process plant, without a full understanding of the feed, product and tails, it is impossible to fully optimise the performance of the plant, such that the metallurgical balance is often open to error. At the port, a statistically correct, bias free and compliant sampling system is crucial to ensuring exported minerals are reflective of their true value and to avoid penalties. Over the last decade, as a result of the iron ore boom, there has been high demand for reliable, representative and standard compliant solids sample systems in Australia. This paper reviews several solids sampling applications at Australian mine sites, the challenges and experience gained and how the implementation of reliable representative sampling systems has provided better understanding of plant process performance, improved plant control and overall benefits to the operations. INTRODUCTION Mining is the primary contributor to the Australian economy with Australia ranking in the top 4 in economic resources for 21 primary industrial minerals in 2016 (Britt, et al., 2017). Australia is one of the world leaders in the export of the majority of its commodities including gold, copper and iron ore (Britt, et al., 2017). Therefore, a suitable and standard compliant sampling system is essential for evaluating plant performance and content verification. At the mine and at the port, the larger iron ore miners in Australia have developed stockpile models to predict the grade of their ore down to individual blocks of the stockpile. This allows the miner to create the right blend of material for sale to their customers and ensures they are not underselling their product or at risk of penalties for impurities or low grade. As an example, the average difference between the benchmark 62% Fe and low grade 58% Fe fines at the time of this report averaged US $20/tonne according to the Metal Bulletin Iron Ore Index (Fastmarkets MB, 2019). At a shipload of 180kt this would be a variation of US $3.6M. Whilst this is an extreme example, it highlights the economic importance of producing the correct grade product and a recognised representative sample of said product.

Attention has been drawn in the publications of the Department of Mines to the view that veins of two different ages occur in the Cariboo district, namely, those of Jura-Cretaceous age and those of pre" Mississippian age. It has been further pointed out that while there is doubtless a wide distribution of veins of pre-Mississippian age in and about the Barkerville and Stanley areas, and in the vicinity of Round Top mountain and Yank's peak, there is no such wide distribution of veins carrying gold values of commercial significance. Veins of the latter type discovered to date occur almost exclusively within one or other of two comparatively narrow zones, both trending northwest and southeast, the one extending from Island mountain co Round Top mountain, and the other from a point somewhat north of Stanley co Yank's peak. In addition, there is some evidence of a third zone trending northwest from Spanish mountain, at or near the contact of the pre-Cambrian and Mesozoic rocks. In short, all the evidence from prospecting and lode-mining operations to date indicates that values are mainly restricted co zones having marked directional distribution. Moreover, it can be demonstrated that the placer deposits resulting from the erosion of the pre-Mississippian veins have a similar directional distribution, allowance being made for modifications due to glaciation. The observations offered in this paper are of the nature of a generalization which seeks to explain certain anomalies both in the vein-mineralization and in the -important auriferous-pyrite replacement deposits in limestone which have recently been discovered. For the sake of brevity, the Island Mountain-Round Top Mountain zone will be referred to as Zone No. 1, and the Stanley-Yank's Peak zone as Zone No. 2.

A drop tower and methodology were developed to study the impact of mineralogy on the flash combustion behaviour of copper concentrates. Reaction shaft conditions of a flash furnace were simulated using a drop tower reactor and different molar ratios of oxygen gas to sulphur in the feed. Five feeds were tested in the drop tower including pure minerals chalcopyrite and pyrite as well as two mineralogically distinct copper concentrates and a blend of the two. The behaviour of each of these five feeds were evaluated through analysis of the solid combustion products for elemental sulphur, mineralogy and particle size. Desulphurization curves for each of the feeds were produced. It is thought that the desulphurization behaviour of pure minerals can be used to estimate the behaviour of a concentrate and that a blending recipe could be developed, which can optimize the chemical and mineralogical inputs to the flash furnace and guide operations on the optimum furnace conditions. Overall, the drop tower has proven to be a useful tool for studying flash combustion processes. Experimental results suggest that mineralogy has a significant impact on the conditions required for the production of matte with consistent grade. This finding is especially significant for custom smelters, which may see several different blends in a day. INTRODUCTION Flash furnace smelting is a continuous feed, batch tap, pyrometallurgical process that is used to produce copper matte from copper sulphide concentrates. Dried concentrate(s), silica flux, and secondary materials are blended to a target chemical composition, typically given by the Cu/S ratio, before processing. This fine, dried feed is dispersed throughout the heated furnace reaction shaft with an O2-enriched reaction gas. The particles heat up in the shaft of the furnace, ignite and undergo reactions that pre-oxidize the iron sulphide and some of the impurities in the feed. Oxidation reactions in the shaft of the furnace desulphurize the feed and produce an SO2-containing off gas. The reacted particles fall into the furnace settler and separate into a Cu-rich matte and an iron-silicate slag, while the SO2-containing off gas is carried out of the furnace for heat and dust recovery, as well as H2SO4 production. Some concerns during operation of the furnace are dusting, over or under oxidation of the feed, and a stable flame.

Many ideas, tools, technologies, and methodologies are believed to have staked their claims on the future of mining. For example, automation is strongly positioned as the platform within which mining will be practiced. A subset of automation ? intelligent mining ? will add some smart interactions between machines, technologies, the rock, and the environment. The future also calls for an improved approach to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Mines of the future are dreamed of to be more ethical and more balanced. They will boast optimized designs, integrated value and supply chains, produce less waste, recycle and reuse, and will require less energy to operate. Then, what about the people that will operate this optimized ecosystem? How is the education system teaching the operators of the mines of the future? What kind of a future should mining education foresee to prepare the workers appropriately? In recent years, the shortage of skilled labor for mines around the world has created a tough competition to attract, retain, and train the very people without whom mining will cease to exist. In Australia, Canada, and the United States in particular, the war for talent has resulted in higher-than-usual labour costs. Such costs have dented the unit costs of many mining businesses. Concomitantly, mining contractors? and consultants? prices have increased to reflect the escalation of labour costs across the value chain. From labourers to engineers, from juniors to seasoned professionals, the increase in compensation is unprecedented. Yet, the shortage is still hurting the industry, and the high calibre candidates continue to be rare gems. The industry has been implementing aggressive solutions that include the increased hiring of skilled immigrants, the training and recruitment of minorities, and the retaining of near-retirement experienced employees. Public relation campaigns about the benefits of embracing careers in mining are also common. The CIM has also devoted a ?M4S? section to its pan-Canada meetings to educate the public, especially the youth, about the importance of the mining industry for Canada. Moreover, mining associations and universities are enticing students? enrolment through scholarships and financial support. Still, the balance between quantity and quality of workers can be discussed. This paper intends to discuss the present state of mining education as an essential part of the future of mining. The authors brush the picture of the education of miners, technicians, and engineers, against the backdrop of the technology-advanced mines of the future.

Plant throughputs range from 150,000 to 810,000 tonnes per year.This paper gives a general view of the Peñoles Mining Group, their type of deposits, mining methods, and mineral processing work practices.The paper also discusses some of Peñoles work philosophies and measures being adopted to become more competitive. Due to the small size of the deposits, the mining methods used and size of the concentrator plants are somehow different to those typically seen in large deposits. Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REEs) profiles and high field strength elements (HFSEs) in rocks and minerals represent important tracers of geological processes. Of these the birdwing-shaped profile with negatively-sloped light REE ((La/Sm)N >1), positively-sloped heavy REE ((Tb/Yb)N <1), and strong negative Eu anomalies is commonly associated with large-scale hydrothermal systems or granitic intrusions. In a different way, severe deviation of Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios from those of chondrite may also indicate hydrothermal signatures in the rocks involved as these ratios are generally stable and chondritic in normal magmatism as a result of their nearly identical ionic radii and charge. In this study, we present a typical setting where birdwing-shaped REE profiles together with Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios unusually higher than those of chondrite, are systematically developed in a series of garnetite, quartzofeldspathic gneiss, Fe- or Mg-rich aluminous gneiss, and sulfides and magnetite. These units and associated Cu-Au mineralization form a VHMS-style hydrothermal system in the granulite-facies 1.4 Ga -1.35 Ga volcano-plutonic, arc-related Bondy gneiss complex (BGC), western Grenville Province, Canada. Outside the recognized hydrothermal system of the BGC, such REE profiles are not observed. Instead the surrounding felsic and mafic gneisses display primary trace element characteristics of island-arc magmas, suggesting that granulitefacies metamorphism did not modify significantly the trace element signatures of the protoliths. Although magmatic fractionation of accessory minerals can produce birdwing-shaped profiles, it cannot explain the extreme fractionation of isovalent trace elements (Nb-Ta) and the high Zr content of the hydrothermal rocks. Neither is it compatible with the lack of significant Nd depletion that would normally incur during this process. Following our study, we demonstrate that F-rich fluid and mineral phases enriched in LREEs and HREEs respectively must have been involved in the main hydrothermal alteration and REE fractionation process in the BGC. Preferential removal of REEs from the interstitial glass of the volcanic protoliths together with dissolution of plagioclase and subsequent external influx of HREEs and HFSEs can produce birdwing-shaped REE profiles. In turn, such profiles and/or unusual Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios can be used as a sensitive marker of hydrothermally altered rocks in targeting mineral exploration.

Although we have yet to reach the midway point in the decade, the copper concentrate market has already witnessed some of the most volatile swings in history, moving from record high treatment and refining charges in 1991-92 to historic lows, in real terms, during the past year. What has been the cause for such volatility? By and large the swings can be attributed to factors of supply and demand in the "custom" copper concentrate market. For example, two relatively recent events which had a major impact on the supply-demand balance were the shutdown of the Bougainville copper mine in Papua New Guinea in 1989 due to rebel insurgency and the startup of the La Escondida mine in Chile in 1992. The first event, threw a balanced to slightly surplus concentrate market into a substantial deficit, forcing treatment terms down as smelters, caught short by the loss of concentrate supplies scrambled to cover their positions. The second event, brought over 300,000 mt per year of new copper in concentrate to the market, more than reversing the losses from the Bougainville shutdown. In combination with other additions to mine capacity via new mines or expansions, the custom concentrate market moved into a huge oversupply in 1991-92 and many mines found themselves unable to place uncommitted tonnage. But even this event was quickly overcome by the use of underutilized capacity at non-traditional buyers, such as those in the C.I.S., Zambia, or those which were not traditionally buyers of custom materials. All of this has happened in the space of five short years, a mere snapshot in the history of the market. I'll return to these points a little further on, but first I would like to review the fundamentals which govern the copper concentrate market.

Reading the newspapers, you will know that opposition to ratification on economic grounds always points to the view that action will result in major price increases for energy (to both industry and households) with consequent severe losses of energy production and a loss of competitiveness for energy-intensive producers (i.e., in your kinds of industries). You might think of this as the ?carbon tax? fear, and you should note that many of the initial policy development experiments included variations of this theme. Analysis reported in late 2000 and into early 2002 reported reductions in energy production in the long run of between 10% and 20%. At the upper end of that view, these were the kinds of numbers reported in the Industry Canada study ?leaked? to the Press last week. The consequences of this approach included significantly uneven negative effects for some provinces (e.g., Alberta, but also Saskatchewan and Newfoundland). It had been agreed by the First Ministers of Canada, however, that the policy should not yield those results so development in recent months has focused on eliminating sector and therefore provincial ?sore thumbs?. Although an emissions trading system, which represents this type of approach and directly impacts costs of production, continues to be featured in the new or current policy and is applied to the Minerals Industries among others, it is designed to be implemented in such fashion that the costs are more moderate than before. And because the industries covered by permits are almost all price takers, there is no device for moving an increased price signal forward to ?consumers?. What this does do is even out negative effects among sectors in the economy and for provinces, but at the expense of government financial results.

The 20th Century saw changes in the mining and metallurgical industry not only technically but also in social and environmental expectations. As projects continue to become larger to maintain competitiveness the visibility of their potential impacts raise concerns among many groups. The need for transparency, openness and early engagement of all parties are fundamental to assure success. An equally important task is to anticipate the standards that will be required to meet society?s expectations in the 21st Century. Historical Observations The mining industry of the 18 and 19th Century was dominated by opportunistic Companies and individuals with an entrepreneurial flair for adventure and risk. Those who promoted had the chance of great reward, while those willing to risk their life were assured a short one for their efforts because of the physical and health dangers that abounded. Disregarding conditions miners rewards were high even in those days, with an average Cornish miner known to be earning two pound a month in 1800. Coal and iron ore mines were driven by the needs of the industrial revolution and were the first to embark on larger scale output. Base metal mines were smaller as industrial demands for their use did not start to expand greatly till the late 19th Century. Electrification, the automobile and the 1st World War drove the increased demand for a variety of metals. Early mines were foul smelling and dusty and what was taken from below ground left spoil piles around the surface countryside after recovery of the coal or concentrate. The image of barren blackened hills is one that is easily conjured up and is an environmental legacy that still lives with us today.

"Since all gold mills must sooner or later be cleaned up for permanent shutdown it was felt that a record of what was done at one mill might be of some help to those who will have to do the same job in the future,In cleaning up the mill of Delnite Mines Limited, I had an advantage that most mill superintendents will not have in that I started up the mill and was there until it was shut down, It was also known for two years approximately when the shutdown would be and for a year almost the exact time. This, of course, made careful planning possible and enabled me to get advance information that wouldn't have been available had the shutdown come unexpectedly,Early in 1964 calculation of ore reserves and the known number of working places available indicated that the mine would run out of ore sometime in August or September but not later than October, The time of course would vary with the number of competent miners that could be retained until the shutdown. Since the mining method used exclusively on the ore then remaining was cut and fill, it was known that once mining operations ceased it would require at most two days to crush and grind the last of the ore.In March 1 964 I took samples of the concrete floor under the precipitation presses, in the flux room and furnace room of the refinery and from the assays obtained proved that there would be no profit in breaking up the concrete to recover the gold from it, Samples taken from the top half inch of the concrete floors assayed less than 0, 10 oz per ton,"

"The Stewart mining camp has a long history of precious and base metal mining. The camp is abundantly mineralized, with more than 200 widespread, varied, vein prospects, deposits and orebodies. These show wide variations in the mineralogy of ore, gangue and alteration assemblages, and wide variations in textures and structural settings. This report establishes the timing of the different metallogenic epochs and suggests a specific exploration application for systematic leadisotope analyses.Galena lead isotope ratios from a range of mineral occurrences indicate that all these varied deposits formed during two main mineralizing events. Lead isotope data from the Stewart mining camp do not provide absolute ages for the formation of mineral deposits, but the relative distributions of data are consistent with dates determined in other studies. One ore-forming episode occurred in the Early Jurassic and the other in the Middle Eocene. Both metallogenic epochs were brief, regional-scale phenomena. Some deposits from the younger mineralizing episode were emplacedadjacent to or superimposed on the older deposits.Field and laboratory studies show that the two metallogenic epochs are characterized by different base and precious metal suites: Early Jurassic gold-silver-zinc-lead-copper; and Middle Eocene silver-lead-zinc. Therefore, showings of different ages have different base and precious metal potentials and deserve different exploration emphasis. Lead isotope studies provide a reliable, cost-effective method for evaluating the age and commodity potential of small or recently discovered mineral showings and for setting exploration priorities on properties with several varied mineral occurrences. The determination of the age and metal potential of a prospect at an early stage of exploration may govern the urgency, intensity or even the necessity for further exploration work."

If fuel cells and hydrogen are to become a mass market reality a substantial amount of further research and development needs to be undertaken. Work in hydrogen storage, production, the economics of all aspects of fuel cells and hydrogen, materials balances, and product integration are just a few of the areas that are under focus. Setting R&D targets, and providing R&D funding are therefore areas that are central to the long term development of the market, and areas in which a number of governments worldwide are highly active. Some governments, such as Japan and Korea, have set a number of very ambitious, highly focused, long term targets and are backing this up with substantial funding, others such as the EU are working on a more integrated approach, wrapping some fairly fundamental R&D into large integrated projects which run in combination with a number of other market aspects, such as public acceptance and roadmapping. The US is slightly different, in that although is has a number of long term programmes and targets, FreedomCar and SuperGen being just two, the levels of funding are set annually with the passing of each years Fiscal Budget. This paper takes three high profile regions and analyses the R&D targets and funding levels for fuel cells and hydrogen. Criteria that will be looked at include: Time frame of target(s), level of ambition, funding issues, including: Funding windows, levels available, funding barriers, overall programme goals. The added value to this paper is that it will provide a clearer picture of where each region is heading, what are its strengths and weaknesses, in terms of R&D and where there may be areas for potential international collaboration.

This type of mineralization i amenable to exploration through an integrated program of geological and geophy ical surveying, consisting of the following: i) Geological urvey both regional and local to outline area of turbidites and a ociated iron formation. Structural and tratigraphic trends documented during this phase are useful in determining eventual grid configurations. Grids are then mapped and ampled at 1:2000 cale. ii) Magnetometer and gradiometer urvey at the ame scale define strongly magnetic diabase dyke and erratically magnetic portions of iron formation. iii) VLF-EM survey are u eful in outlining conductive trend invariably as ociated with sulphidic or graphitic phase of iron formation. iv) Geological updating and ampling of iron fom1ation based on the geophysical su rveys. This is necessary for the production of a final geologic map and a an adjunct to drill target election. In problematic instances self-potential urveys have documented the pre ence of non-conductive sulphide accumulations, and horizontal loop EM surveys have been used to determine conductor geometry and quality. Target selection is based on a synthesis of the information from all of the above surveys with the results of no single survey being critical to drill decisions. The program is designed to provide first-pass, detailed , cost-effective ground coverage of large areas of highly prospective geology.

Geophysical techniques have played a pivotal role in northern kimberlite exploration since the initial discovery at Point Lake in 1991. In the Slave Craton and surrounding regions, there are definite contrasts in physical properties between kimberlite intrusions and surrounding bedrock. Kimberlite commonly displays higher magnetic susceptibility, distinctive remnant magnetism, low electrical resistivity and lower density than surrounding rocks. In addition, the distinctive geometry of kimberlite pipes is reflected in geophysical responses which further facilitates target discrimination. There has been an evolution in geophysical exploration strategies over the past 12 years. Helicopter total magnetic field and electromagnetic (HEM) surveys have proven to the most cost-effective means of conducting first pass investigations in prospective areas. During the early 1990&apos;s, total magnetic field and frequency domain electromagnetic surveys were virtually the sole techniques employed during follow-up surveys. Inevitably, the initially high rates of kimberlite discovery declined in the areas surrounding the original finds. Marginal magnetic and EM anomalies were all that remained to be tested and this spurred interest in the improvement of existing interpretation algorithms and in the application of additional complementary techniques to reduce the exploration risk. Gravity has become a popular third survey following the deployment of the Falcon (TM) airborne gravity gradiometer system by BHP Billiton in 1999 and improvements in ground techniques. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has proven to be particularly useful in delineating kimberlite pipes following drill discovery and in exploring for kimberlite dykes in settings where indicator mineral trains indicate such targets are likely. Seismic methods have been tested for both reconnaissance and delineation but remain underemployed. Given the high cost of drilling in the North and the proven success of geophysical techniques in reducing exploration risk, it is likely that an increasingly diverse range of geophysical techniques and innovative interpretation techniques will continue to be applied in kimberlite exploration.

Many mines combine open pit with underground mining, and on many occasions the underground mine is an extension of the open-pit. In these circumstances the decision about where the open-pit stops and the underground starts is crucial and driven by many factors. This paper looks at some of the ways that this cut-over can be calculated and specifically examines the calculation of it using modern mine optimization software. The paper provides a case study which will review various outcomes using these techniques, and demonstrates the influence of various factors on the optimal transition cut-over point. Biographies Mr Finch is a Divisional Manager and a Principal consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Vancouver, Canada. At Snowden Mr Finch leads a team of engineers that perform mining engineering studies for projects around the world. Prior to joining Snowden Mr Finch was the Mining Manager at Barrick?s Henty mine in Tasmania Australia. Prior to that Mr Finch has held a variety of roles in both consulting and operations working for various organisations at various levels in the Asia Pacific region. He is responsible for the design and implementation of Snowden?s proprietary optimization software products. Prior to joining Snowden Dr Elkington completed his PhD in Mine Optimisation at The University of Western Australia, and bachelor?s degrees in Engineering (Hons) and Commerce from The University of Western Australia. "Evolution of the continental lithosphere over Earth’s 4.6 billion year history is one of the fundamental questions of geoscience. Much of the Earth’s present-day continental crust formed during the first 2 billion years, the Archean eon, of the planet’s lifetime and thus, Archean processes of lithospheric formation must be studied in order to address this question. Until recently, the processes of Archean lithospheric evolution were thought to be fundamentally different from present-day plate tectonic processes. However, subsequent evidence suggests that the growth of Archean continents may be explained in terms of modern tectonic accretionary tectonics similar to those presently operating in the southwest Pacific region. The evidence supporting this hypothesis was compiled largely by Canadian geoscientists working in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield in northwestern Ontario, over the past 15 years. Study of Archean rocks is also economically important because the Archean rocks of the world, although comprising only a relatively small fraction of the exposed continental crust, contain much of the world’s mineral wealth, including more than half of the world’s gold, as well as significant base metal reserves. Furthermore, the vast majority of primary economic diamond deposits are derived from the lithospheric roots beneath Archean cratons.The LITHOPROBE Western Superior Transect is located within the western part of the Superior Province in northwestern Ontario (Fig. 1). The Superior Province is the largest and best exposed Archean crustal block in the world and forms the nucleus of the North American continent. The internal structure of the Superior Province records a history of the processes that formed the earliest lithospheric elements of the Earth into cratons, thus providing an ideal laboratory for investigating early crustal evolution. The Western Superior Province is characterized by a regional pattern of alternating, 100 km to 200 km wide geological belts (Fig. 2). The observed geologic relationships between and within these subprovinces have been explained in terms of a modern tectonic model of terrane accretion. Oceanic floor, volcanic island arcs, oceanic sediments and continental fragments were accreted successively from north to south against the southern margin of a cratonic nucleus (North Caribou terrane, Fig. 2) which grew steadily in size with the arrival of new terranes through geologic time. If this model is correct, it suggests that the tectonic processes operating today have been active without major variation over the past 3 billion years."

The use of gold compounds in homogeneous catalysed organic reactions has been undervalued for many years due to the preconceived opinion that gold is an expensive and extremely chemically inert metal. However, recent reports have changed this assessment and gold salts in small amounts are known to display high catalytic activity.[1] Thus, it has been reported recently that anhydrous AuCl3 catalyses the formation of C-C and C-O bonds (usually mediated by hydrochloric and other protonic and Lewis acids).[2] Some examples include Michael type additions, selective cross cycloisomerisation/dimerisation of propargyl or allenyl ketones, benzannulation between o-alkynylbenzaldehides and alkynes or cyclisation of alkenyl furans. It is noteworthy that some of these reactions[2a] can be also catalysed by silver salts but with much lower yields. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrones to alkenes is a powerful synthetic method that has found numerous applications in the synthesis of a variety of carbon frameworks.[3] Several laboratories have focused on the development of Lewis acidic reagents to modulate the selectivity of the reaction.[4] Despite the extensive study performed, there are not many examples in which a metallic complex catalyses the dipolar cycloaddition. Most of these reactions require the presence of a metallic complex and nitrone in a 1:1 molar ratio. Recently, we have carried out stoichiometric reactions of the N-benzil-C(2-pyridil)nitrone, 1, with different dipolarophiles in the presence of zinc and silver compounds.[5] Apart from an increase of the reaction rate and the selective formation of one of the possible isomers, we have shown the formation of zinc and silver-nitrone complexes during the reaction, which behave as the intermediates in the cycloaddition process. As suggested by the results obtained with silver complexes, we decided to test gold derivatives (in the oxidation states of I and III). Interestingly, we have found that they can be used not only as stoichiometric reagents but they can also mediate these cycloadditions in catalytic amounts (5 to 10 mol % respect to the nitrone). Here we present the results on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of the N-benzil-C(2-pyridil)nitrone (2-PyBN), 1, and methylacrilate, 2, (Eq. 1) catalysed by gold(III) derivatives.

THE prospecter and geologist in the field, in the search for gold, are very often faced with a real difficulty. The: mineralized rock _frequently contains gold which is so finely divided or associated with sulphides that it is not recognizable in the gold pan. In recent years, the practice has been to take samples, send them to an assay office, and sit down and wait for results. This paper describes a method of solving the difficulty of proving the presence of this fine gold. The investigation is still in an experimental stage; but certain results have been obtained which would seem to justify publication. We do not consider that the method outlined is quantitative, but we believe that qualitative results are assured. The procedure has the great merit of simplicity. A sample of approximately two pounds of the mineralized rock should be taken and powdered as fine as is practicable. This powder is theo panned and the heavy minerals concentrated. Approximately two grams of these concentrates are taken for the test (one gram can be roughly gauged in the field by heaping up the powder on a Canadian twenty-five cent piece). The material is placed in a test-tube and 6 c.c. of a 10 per cent solution of iodine in alcohol are added (one-third of a test-tube full is approximately equal to 6 c.c.). Heat gently for about ten minutes over a spirit lamp, but without actual boiling. Allow to stand undisturbed until the sediment has settled to the bottom. Remove the clear iodine solution with an eye dropper. Allow it to fall, drop after drop, on a warmed pyrex watch-glass (the drops should be of equal size), taking care that the successive drops fall in the same place and that each drop evaporates before the next drop falls. Heat is applied to the lower side of the watch-glass by means of a spirit lamp. If gold is present in amounts of $2.00 or more per ton, a gold mirror will be formed on the watch-glass. This process of dropping and evaporating should be continued until no clear solution remains. If no mirror has appeared when all the solution has been used, another 6 c.c. of the iodine solution should be added to the powder and the process repeated. The absence of a mirror after the double treatment denotes an amount of gold less than two dollars per ton at the present price, or that the ore contains no gold. The mirror obtained must be washed with nitric acid ( 1: 1) to remove any copper, silver, lead, zinc, and iron. The yellow mirror remaining is pure gold.

Despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary, the mining industry is not in decline. Rather, the world?s largest mining companies are among the most consistently profitable companies in any industry. In many cases, profitable mining companies have been built around a few large scale, long life mines. These criteria for success ? size and long life ? have led to the current preference for deposits that can be exploited using open pit methods. However, developments in the science of block caving have resulted in this mining method achieving costs and productivities that are competitive with the largest open pits, while achieving widespread applicability. One implication of the low costs and widespread applicability of block caving is that some current open pits are possibly too deep.
