A low grade, refractory ore gold mine with high striping ratio such as at Macraes is always challenged in ways to improve margins. Common practice approaches used at OceanaGold Ltd Macraes are to maximise grade delivery, optimise recovery and reduce unit costs, as well as take any opportunities to incorporate new technologies and implement enhanced commercial strategies.   The Business Improvement (BI) programme was implemented across the Macraes operations in late 2003 and is being rolled-out to all other parts of the business. The core focus of BI at OGL is to: +        increase revenue, +        reduce cost, and +        improve processes.   A dedicated BI team comprising of a manager, team leaders and business analysts were engaged to identify and manage a series of opportunities to reduce operating expenses, optimise capital outlays and generate extra revenue. The Business Improvement Programme, though in its formative phase, has begun a cultural change within the organisation. Many people are starting to challenge the way they do things and are looking for ways to continually improve business performance.   The BI team encompasses individuals from different departments who can offer the diverse skill set necessary to produce intended results. The current team is made up of a BI manager, BI Team Leaders in Mining and Processing and analysts from Mining, Processing, Commercial and Plant Maintenance workgroups. A team member has recently been formally trained as a Six Sigma Black Belt. ] The BIÆs team role is to assist in the establishment of project management processes for each improvement idea. In addition the team will assist in tracking implementation, identifying and unblocking restrictions and limitations as well as setting up metrics to quantify the level of benefit returned and sustained.   From a more strategic point of view, the BI team is advancing the Business Improvement capability of the company by developing long term Communication and Training strategies. These strategies will set the direction of BI initiatives in the years to come to: +        educate the OGL workforce in basic BI techniques, +        assist the OGL workforce in applying basic BI techniques, +        communication the direction of BI in OGL, and +        close the information feedback loop to facilitate transparent communication between the OGL workforce and the BI team.

This paper provides an overview of these results, with particular emphasis on new results from Arnhem Land.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

The Golden Pig mine has embarked on a diamond drill program design philosophy that increases flexibility of the program by greatly increased drill pattern densities. The use of standard broad pattern diamond drilling at the Golden Pig mine has previously lead to operational inefficiencies and impacted significantly on the costs of the mine. The diamond drill program philosophy and its interaction with mine planning is explained. The case study of the E lode mining as used to internally justify the increased drill densities is detailed.

The link between exploration success and new ideas from research and development (R&D), although often assumed, is rarely well explained or well illustrated. One issue is understanding the role of innovative ideas in the exploration process, and another is determining the relative contributing factors to an exploration success. A useful measure of gold exploration success over an extended time period and geographic area is discovery rate (θ): Discovery rate θ = gold discovered/exploration expenditure (usefully expressed as tonnes of gold per $1 million). The total gold discovered is strongly leveraged to discovery rate, as any increase in θ typically has a positive effect on exploration expenditure. Hence, improving the discovery rate is a key driver for a sustainable mineral industry, especially for gold. There are very few ways to influence θ beyond innovative R&D ideas and breakthroughs, and well-motivated and trained staff. The Australian gold industry has experienced exceptional exploration success with 9956 tonnes of gold discovered from 1979 to 2003, inclusive. This equates to: Discovery rate θ = 0.9 t/A$1 M Two-thirds of this gold has been found in the Yilgarn craton of Western Australia (6265 tonnes Au). Without this exploration success, there would have been no platform on which to build the current gold industry and to take advantage of elevated gold prices and advances in mining and processing. Several causes of the Western Australian gold success have been proposed, and more than one may be correct. Gold price, and mining and processing advances have all had influence; but exploration success and discovery of gold were essential to add to the miniscule resource base of 1979. A comparison of the exploration methods used to search for gold in the Yilgarn craton in 1979, and 1990, highlights a small number of breakthrough ideas introduced to the industry during the 1980s, and in most cases emanating directly from local R&D. By the 1990s, these ideas were being used in most gold exploration programs in the Yilgarn craton, and are still used today. These six breakthroughs are: epigenetic timing of gold deposit formation (ie after formation of rock sequence), chemical and mechanical role of host rocks, relevance of carbonate alteration haloes, gold dispersion in the regolith, optimal sampling media, and appreciation of landforms in exploration program design. Interestingly, gold exploration science in Western Australia entered the 1980s period without rigid paradigms in place regarding gold deposit formation; there was a balance between descriptive and genetic models, there was scope to research gold deposits from microscopic to global scales and there were highly effective industry research uptake processes in place: it is suggested here that these favourable conditions contributed to the exploration success and industry growth.

The geographical region of South East Asia is variously defined, but generally agreed to include the Asean group - Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Other regional countries, such as Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Kampuchea etc. are of course geographically part of the region, however in economic terms, they play a minor role. It is the Asean group that dominates present economic activity and provides the overwhelming opportunity for commercial development. My experience in South East Asia has been gleaned over 15 years of regular travel in the region. More recently, we have established company offices in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to extend and deepen contacts with major customers. This progressive development is an integral part of a planned growth pattern and will be discussed in more detail shortly. South East Asia is a rapidly developing economic growth centre, a fact which is clearly recognised and accepted by most commentators. An important question is then to be asked: Why has the region been relatively neglected by Australian, U.S. and European industrial supply companies? I will attempt to address this question in the context of industrial minerals and propose some ideas as to how effective sales programs could be developed. Firstly, let's consider the market potential provided by countries within the region. It is reasonable to suggest that industrial growth in S.E. Asia over the past 20 years has been generally steady and in some cases, explosive. Until recently, this growth has predominantly been driven by development of internal (regional) demand. Population growth and rising living standards have ensured that basic industries have enjoyed a solid uptrend in sales and production. The industries which most benefitted from regional economic development over this period were, interestingly, those which we understand to be major users of industrial minerals - glass, ceramics, paper, surface coatings, cement, refractories, rubber and plastics. Each of these industrial sectors has been influenced by different growth stimulii over a 20 year period. Nevertheless, they also enjoy a common feature which ensured an above average performance. All sectors are fundamental to an environment enjoying rising living standards and rapid growth in general prosperity. More recently, internal growth factors have been overtaken by a recognition that manufactured products from the region are competitive in export markets. This comparatively recent development provides the most interesting possibilities for higher value industrial mineral raw materials. Let me explain: For 20 years, industrial growth in South Asia has essentially been focused on satisfying domestic demand. Finished quality of manufactured items was orientated to a developing market more interested in cost than aesthetics or long life. This was reflected in raw material specifications, which often did not exist and at the best were undemanding.

I propose to speak today about our mineral heritage. In common usage "heritage" refers to the past. It means the discoveries, the developments, the mines and the processing plants, the benefits, the consequences, and the human experiences flowing from these. The history of the industry, inseparable from the history of the countries in which The Institute operates, is a rich background of which we can all be proud.But there is also a much wider meaning to mineral heritage. Our past has left us with the ab\lity to create and operate world scale enterprises generating wealth for the community, the ability to offer satisfying and challenging careers in a wide range of skills to our young people, and the willingness to follow adventurous and challenging vocations in remote areas, away from the big cities, at a time when the mentality of many is to get the most for the least effort and at the least inconvenience to themselves. The industry continues to be the repository of the pioneer spirit and a vital contributor to improving the life of the people in our countries.Thus, while our mineral heritage has much to do with the past, an essential part of it is how we use this rich past to build and shape our future. It is in this broader context that I am speaking today.

Two unknown iron ore samples were found by a geologist from Ok Tedi Mining Limited copper, gold and silver mine at an old wharf site dedicated to a 1970s drilling program in Lake Murray in Papua New Guinea (PNG). These iron ore samples could not come from a PNG mine and it was decided that a study should be undertaken to understand their origin. Lake Murray is the largest lake in PNG with a total surface area of 647 km2. It has a high-water 2038 km long convoluted shoreline with seasonal water level changes (Osborne, Kyle and Abramski, 1987) and it is located around 200 km south of the Ok Tedi mine (5°13’25”S, 141°09’37”E). The petrology, mineralogy and chemistry of two Fe samples (Ok Tedi 1 and Ok Tedi 2) included optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and a comparison with worldwide iron ore deposits. The two rock samples were cut to produce two subsamples: (1) a polished thin section; and (2) a pulp that was used for XRF analysis including major, minor and trace elements. Ok Tedi 1 and Ok Tedi 2 were petrologically and chemically compared to a range of known iron ore samples from Australia, Brazil and South Africa. The petrological study of Ok Tedi 1 indicates that it is composed of granoblastic recrystallised hematite and the overall texture is uniform without any obvious original ‘sedimentary’ texture. Ok Tedi 2 is a ‘specular’ or platy hematite with recrystallised and fused grains. Using both petrological and chemical clues, the two Ok Tedi samples likely originated from the Iron Quadrangle in Brazil.

In the sixteenth century the Spanish Captain da Alvaro Soavedaro, on a search for the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, came across the main island of New Guinea which he named Isla del Oro (Island of Gold). Since that time exploration for, and mining of, gold has been pursued by many, culminating in . the development of major world-class projects in the latter part of the 20th century. Though various prospectors have panned for gold and small gold mining projects were undertaken through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was not until the 1880's when mining became a more concerted economic venture. Misima and Woodlark Islands in Milne Bay, Gura-Ackera and Yoada in Oro, and Lakekamu in Gulf Province and Keveri in Central Province were all gold producers by late nineteenth century. It was in the 1920's that corporations began mining in PNG and with the commencement of production at Panguna in Bougainville in 1972 a new era of mega-project mining began.' Today there are two large mining projects producing mainly gold and copper. The first, already mentioned, is Panguna on Bougainville Island. This project has provided Government with $US 475 million in taxes. ok Tedi is the second large mine development located in Western Province. It began production in 1984 with the extraction of the deposit's "gold Cap".

In the Renison Bell area of western Tas mania, a series of Lower Cambrian quartzites, shales, carbonate beds ("dolomites"), cong- lomerates, tuffs and argillites have been folded into a broad monocline whose general strike is NW-SE, plunging slightly north and dipping NE. The downwarped eastern side of the monocline is disrupted by a steep (50-800) east dipping normal fault, known as the Bassett Structure, whose throw is in excess of 500 m. A series of flat north dipping normal faults, each with a throw of approximately 50 m, further disrupts the sequence. All major faulting was pre-mineralization. A cassiterite- bearing Devonian quartz porphyry body intrudes this Cambrian sequence 2 km south of the currently operating mine. Of economic importance is the presence of three carbonate beds in the sequence. These carbonates consist of a mixture of calcite, dolomite and siderite. The No. 1 (youngest) and No. 2 carbonate beds are each approximately 15 m thick and are separated by 20 m of hematitic conglomerates and tuffs. The No. 3 (oldest) carbonate bed is approximately 5 m thick and is separated from the No. 2 horizon by 50 m of dark grey, finely laminated shales and quart- zites. This subject of paramount importance in many modern plants employed in the extraction of gold from ores by cyanidation, involves several considerations.With the old-type "slimes decantation" process, using several tanks of large dimension, installed at high capital cost, it was frequently possible to obtain good settlement over a protracted period, but the disability of indifferent response to subsequent filtration and washing of the residual pulp, after decantation of the supernatant pregnant solution, was often present.In modern cyanidation practice, the tendency is to reduce capital expenditure by continuous processing of the ore pulp in a plant of less volume, but capable of handling more tonnage through-put and yielding, coincidently, less residual dissolved gold in the final pulp residues.INHIBITORY FACTORS.These involve a study of the effect of the circuit water or solution employed in milling and treatment, the amount of "primary" slime occurring in the ore broken underground, the constitution of the "walls" underground, the inherent occurrence of colloidal slime in partially decomposed ore, and the presence of kaolinised and ferruginous clayey structures carrying payable infiltrations of gold values, to mention some of the troubles encountered in practice. THE following description of the surface plant of the Great Fitzroy Mines is to be understood as having been compiled by a mechanical engineer, who concerns himself more with the various appliances used, their correct construction to enable them to accomplish their prescribed work, and the production and transmission of the power required to operate them, than with the reasons for the physical and chemical processes which those appliances are called upon to assist in carrying out. Hence the metallurgist will not find herein more than the skeleton of the organism, which perhaps he would wish to be clothed with the detailed description of the substances undergoing treatment, in their various combinations, at all stages, and the results attained in separating the valuable constituents from the worthless. So, also, no details will be found of the methods employed by the management for. the purpose of determining by sampling and assaying the nature of the various products obtained.GENERALThe ore being worked at the Great Fitzroy Mine is divided into two classes :-1. Ore that requires concentration before smelting.2. Around no subject of technical )uterest have prejudice and wrong-thinking in the past so wrapped a web of obscurity as that of the corrosion of metals.It is a matter which has primarily concerned the engineer, but the paucity of his training in chemistry and electrochemistry has been the stumbling block to a better understanding of its mechanism.Now that the more important conditions controlling corrosion have been scientifically.established, it can be seen that, with the exception of but a few of the minor points, the electrochemical laws enunciated by Faraday, Helmholtz; Nernst, and others, are sufficient to include all the facts of the process.The word corrosion (derived from the Latin rodere-to gnaw) is so often wrongly applied that a definition at this stage would be useful. As now understood, it means the dispersion and waste of the useful solid metal by conversion into a useless compound which mayor may not be retained on or near the metal remaining.Commonly the presence of these compounds is regarded as evidence of corrosion, but the converse is not necessarily true; the lack of visible corrosion products on a clean surface of metal is no criterion of the absence of this change. It may be difficult to prove that the erosion of such a surface has been caused by chemical and not by mechanical effects alone.

The performance of 460 stope surfaces at WMC ResourcesÆ Olympic Dam Operation (ODO) has been used to investigate the confidence that can be placed in the Stability Graph Method for design of stope dimensions. A detailed database of stope performance and ground condition information was established for each stope. The database contains all the required stability graph information as well as other factors thought to influence stability, such as discrete major structures, poor shape and exposure time. The performance of each stope surface was quantified by calculating Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Slough (ELOS). The performance of stope walls and crowns was plotted on the supported and unsupported case history stability graphs. Based on this information an ODO design limit of HR = 3.3 x NÆ0.33 has been suggested for stope walls. Walls that plotted above this line were 80 per cent stable, 20 per cent unstable and zero per cent failed. Below the line 60 per cent were stable, 30 per cent unstable and ten per cent failed. Supported crowns that are flat or arched in shape and are not within the influence of major structures can be designed in the stability graphÆs æstable zoneÆ with a strong likelihood of stability. The Stability Graph Method did not reliably predict the performance of unsupported crowns at ODO.

The mining industry maintains a ælove-hateÆ relationship with water. Dewatering, aquifer, water disposal, irrigation, process water, tailings water, run-off water, seepage, leachate and sumps are all terms that are used on a daily basis in the mining industry, highlighting the numerous water usages on site and their associated quality. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2001), each year the mining industry consumes over 530 000 ML of water. The increasing recognition of water as a limited and valuable commodity, and the associated environmental concerns with the management of water disposal to the environment has led the industry into improving on-site water management. Progressively, water balance models and water reuse strategies are being developed, incorporating more sophisticated water treatment processes. By way of example, membrane technologies, once restricted to industries such as the pharmaceutical industry or the drinking water industry, are now entering the mining world with the aim of producing clean water of suitable quality for ore processing or for advanced treatment prior to release to the environment. This paper will provide a review of the threats and opportunities linked to water use and recovery/reuse in the mining industry in Australia. It will open with an overview of current water usage and associated quality for various mineral industries and continue with identifying the threats and limitations associated with the quality of available water. It will then present how newly developed water treatment technologies and assessment tools can be incorporated into the system to enhance the recovery and reuse of water on site, reduce the risks associated with securing long-term water supply and further improve production, environment and safety (health risk control).

Welcome to this 13th Congress of The Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is twenty one years since The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy last hosted this congress and it is a privilege and a pleasure for The AusIMM to have that responsibility once more. The theme of this congress "The Twenty-First Century - Mining for Mankind" stimulates many thoughts. The first thought that it generates in me relates to the reference to the 21st Century. We are still 14 years away from it and already consideration of the beginning of the next millenium is becoming something of a cliche. If we feel like that about it now, how will we feel at the 14th Congress of the CMMI in 1990, or the 15th in 1994 or the 16th in 1998? If we do all the crystal ball gazing about the 21st Century this week, those poor devils in the 1990s will in fact have nothing to talk about. Of course that is not the case. This is a very appropriate time for those of us concerned with mining and metallurgy to contemplate the next century. Fourteen years is about the extent of forward planning necessary in the mining business. I sometimes feel that most people do not take seriously the need for long range planning in our industry. Politicians, investment fund managers, and others under severe short-term pressure to perform in our hyperactive world may nod in apparent appreciation of our long term plans but their actions in the interests of expediency often betray-them.

When Australian voters elected a Labor Government in March 1983 the value of the Jabiluka uranium deposit as an asset of Pancontinental Mining Limited effectively evaporated overnight. The day before the election, Jabiluka was Pancon's principal asset, with the Company's 65% stake in the deposit having a market value of the order of $US1 billion. This value had been set by an agreement reached with a potential customer, who was prepared to pay $US150 million for 10% of Jabiluka. The months before the election had been the culmination of ten years of unremitting effort to bring what was then the world's largest reserve of high'grade uranium ore into production. These efforts had included two and a half years of negotiations with the local aborigines, as well as exhaustive environmental studies and conceptual mine planning. All domestic approvals required to develop the Jabiluka deposit had been given to Pancontinental and marketing efforts had successfully placed about 50% of the expected uranium production with overseas utilities. It appeared that Jabiluka was about to emerge as one of the world's great mining enterprises. The election of a government with an anti-uranium policy stopped Jabiluka dead in its tracks. Pancontinental's largest asset had effectively become worthless and the Company appeared to be facing a bleak future.

æZero waste steel making productionÆ has already been the subject of several studies and also the successful result of some companies. Regarding waste and by-products, slags are the largest in terms of weight, although among the least hazardous. All steelmakers around the world are presently looking into profitable solutions, according to their local conditions: environment constraints, available markets, and mode of operation. Today the major technical methods of slag value capture include different levels of magnetic separation and screening to remove entrained steel, for production of aggregate in civil works. A survey of different retrieval processes shows that pyrometallurgical processing of steelmaking slags will increase the recovery ratio of iron and other metals. In the process, the remaining part of the material, a mixture of metallic oxides, can be easily transformed into hydraulic binder such as cement. Can steelmakers consider the slag as a co-product, and not only a waste or by-product? The ability of pyrometallurgical processes to treat other wastes and by-products generated in the steelplant is an opportunity for the steelmakers to reach the æzero waste productionÆ status. A technical survey of the experiences and possible solutions of pyrometallurgical processing is presented as well as technical descriptions of technological, economical and profitability analysis in relation with foreseeable markets.

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

In cases where coarse gold is present in a deposit, it is usual to use the screen fire assay (SFA) method to analyse the samples. There is no doubt that this method is more accurate than the standard fire assay (FA) and reduces the risk to have a systematic bias. Nevertheless, the difference between the analytical errors of both methods can be glossed over when the overall sampling error is added to obtain the measurement error. In that case, the advantage of the SFA cannot justify its higher cost.The current paper attempts to address this question in the case of a gold ore deposit with visible coarse gold in various sampling situations (drill core sampling in exploration, blasthole or chip sampling in mining exploitation). The overall measurement error is estimated taking into account the analytical error and all the sampling error components following the Pierre GyÆs theory of sampling.Firstly, only the last sampling stage is considered when the pulverised sample is processed either to obtain one analysis sample for a FA or to be screened and subsampled for a SFA. The calculated measurement error clearly shows the advantage of the SFA specifically in presence of coarse gold. Secondly, the half core sampling is studied to explain the observed discrepancies when controlling the second half core. Finally, the blasthole sampling is treated using in situ heterogeneity models to show that the relative advantage of the SFA is hidden by the large overall sampling error.In conclusion, the choice of the assaying method is discussed at the light of the overall measurement error and in accordance to the analysis objective.CITATION:Brochot, S, 2012.
