From 1980 to February 1991 the Rosebery concentrator purchased ore from Aberfoyle's Que River Mine. Following the termination of the contract the concentrator reverted to treating Rosebery ore alone. Since that time it has become apparent that the circuit configuration employed was no longer optimum for zinc metallurgy. The circuit was designed to treat a difficult, slow floating sphalerite; however, the opposite was now found to be true. The sphalerite is fast floating and the circuit was cumbersome. During 1992 extensive circuit changes led to the provision of a simple open circuit flow sheet. The circuit is now easier for operators to understand and lends itself to improvements in process control. Middlings streams have been minimised, which produces a far more stable circuit. Significantly, it must be noted that the key to achieving potential results must lie in reducing variations within the process. A significant ore characterisation program has been undertaken, providing an insight into the metallurgical compatability of the ore to be mined. Using the information collected in this program, metallurgical recoveries and grades can now be predicted with a geater accuracy. Ore characterisation data suggests that an improvement from a 54 per cent zinc concentrate to a 57 per cent zinc concentrate should be achievable. By understanding the size-by-size mineral assemblage, a strategy for concentrate grade improvement has been developed. The requirements of the customer must in all cases determine the quality of the product. Pasminco is a fully-integrated zinc producer and as such significant gains can result by tailoring the concentrates to suit the Smelters.

Recent geological mapping has indicated changes to the stratigraphy of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The new stratigraphy and interpreted depositional environments are examined in relation to the distribution and genesis of stratabound mineral deposits. Basinward correlations are made with near-shore carbonate and psammite-rudite units in the Rum Jungle region. Most other units in the same region are condensed, indicating long- lived supratidal, intertidal or shallow conditions during most of the depositional cycle. Units containing most of the mineralisation represent the earliest near-shore developments of strongly reducing partly pelitic and evaporitic conditions and contain mainly uranium and base metals. Restricted distal, strongly reducing facies with associated felsic volcanics are also well mineralised, and mainly contain gold, silver and base metals, although some deposits are probably genetically related to synorogenic or postorogenic granites. Mineralisation in other facies is almost all epigenetic hydrothermal in origin, although minor mineralisation is related to volcanics, or dolomitic parts of the sequence. Areas of potential mineralisation include near-shore environments in the north, and carbonate reefs along growth faults. Two suites of postorogenic felsic volcanics and related sediments deposited in shallow water within and around northwest and east-northeast rift systems, overlie the metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the south. The suites have potential for volcanogenic deposits, mostly of uranium, gold and copper.

Tin mineralisation occurs at Renison Bell, near Zeehan in Tasmania, as a group of cassiterite-bearing massive pyrrhotite bodies in Cambrian sedimentary rocks. Mineralising fluids from the underlying Pine Hill Granite have replaced carbonate rocks with massive sulphides and cassiterite. The discrete blocks of massive pyrrhotite have high density and high magnetic susceptibility contrasts with the comparatively barren country rock. They are strongly remanently magnetised and are excellent geophysical targets. A detailed geophysical model of the mine was created from a database comprising 1:2500 scale geological mapping and geological logs of approximately 4000 drill-cores. The model comprises 93 parallel cross-sections, each 1.5 km long, spaced 20 m apart. Each cross-section is comprised of up to 150 polygons which represent all known individual rock types and orebodies. The magnetic response of the model was computed and the residual between the model and the observed response, measured by a low-level helicopter magnetic survey, revealed several anomalies unaccounted for by the model. Drill testing of these anomalies led to the discovery of several hitherto unknown massive sulphide occurrences. Surface gravity data of the mine and surrounding district were enhanced by applying digital terrain corrections. The corrected Bouguer anomaly revealed a hitherto unknown positive anomaly associated with the ore zones of the Renison mine. The gravity anomaly of the model was also computed. Unfortunately, the limited resolution of the observed data prevented the delineation of ore targets. The terrain-corrected Bouguer gravity data were also used to model the shape of the underlying non-magnetic Pine Hill Granite. A computer inversion method was implemented to build a 3D block model of the granite. Results agreed with previous conventional 3D modelling techniques but yielded improved resolution of the granite form. The project involved development of new computer software to build and edit the large and complex 3D geophysical model of the mine and to compute the model's magnetic and gravity responses. Software was also developed to build and compute the gravity response of a 3D block model of the underlying granite.

The treatment plant of the Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd. is situated on the Oroya South Lease, on the Eastern edge of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile.It was designed and erected by Messrs. Alex. Stewart and Company, in consultation with Mr. Harry Hey, and was completed in November, 1937.Its original capacity was 9,000 tons of all-sulphide ore per calendar month, l?ut the plant was extended in October, 1939, to treat 13,000 to 14,000 tons per month of mixed sulphide and oxidised ore.Recovery of the gold is accomplished by cyanide treatment, followed by flotation of the cyanided residue, roasting and cyanidation of flotation concentrate and precipitation of the gold from the cyanide solutions. In the cyanide section, the crushed ore is finely ground in cyanide ,solution and the pulp is agitated to dissolve further gold. It is then thickened and filtered. In the flotation section, this filter residue is conditioned with S02 gas and a pyrite-gold concentrate recovered by flotation.This concentrate is roasted and then cyanided.KALGOORLIE ORE DEPOSIT.The Kalgoorlie ore deposit occurs within a wide area of Pre-Cambrian rocks, ,and consists essentially of two series of basic igneous rocks known as the older greenstone series (calc schist) and the younger greenstone series (quartzdolerite- greenstone) . In order to study conditions under which SiO(g) may be formed in a blast furnace, equilibrium phase diagrams were constructed for the combustion of high and low ash cokes with oxygen-enriched blast and oil injection under conditions of high and low raceway pressures. Free energy minimisation techniques were used to calculate the composition of gaseous and condensed phases. Where coke ash is assumed, for simplicity, to comprise Si02 only, the coke can be comple- tely gasified, mainly to SiO and CO, under restricted conditions of coke to blast ratio and at temperatures greater than 1600 - 1650¦C, depending on system pressure. The formation of SiO(g) is partially suppressed by the introduction of alumina into the ash, because of the formation of solid and liquid alumino- silicate compounds. The minimum temperature for complete silicon gasification is raised to about 1700¦C. The results of the equilibrium calcula- tions are related-to actual raceway conditions. It is proposed that virtually all silicon in the coke ash is gasified such that, on condensation, it affects hot metal chemistry and slag properties and secondly, that the effects will be greater with higher ash cokes.

In the mid 1960's Outokumpu considered building a lead Flash Smelter on the basis of Flash Smelting technology developed first in the late 1940s for smelting copper concentrates. Pilot scale tests were carried out and the process was found technically sound. The project was however not economically viable under Finnish conditions and it was cancelled. In 1981 pilot plant tests were restarted after many enquiries from the primary lead producers. All the know-how and development made in copper and nickel smelters was applied to the Lead Flash Smelting process and the tests were successful. Outokumpu has so far tested several types of lead concentrate with lead contents ranging from 28 to 75 per cent. The concentrate is oxidized and smelted to metallic lead and slag directly in the Flash Smelting Furnace using high oxygen enrichment of tonnage oxygen. Fossile fuel is used in the Flash Smelting Furnace in cases when the feed material does not contain enough latent heat to smelt the furnace products even though pure oxygen is used for oxidation. Thus the process results in a low consumption of extraneous energy. Use of oxygen results in a small gas flow but it is rich in sulphur dioxide. The gas treatment facilities and sulphur recovery plant will be small in size and low in investment cost. The process is flexible and can produce stable quality of products from different types of raw materials. Quality of lead bullion especially the sulphur content can be regulated over wide a range, from 0.1 per cent upwards according to the needs of the refinery.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

The San Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t An, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70-100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the "subvolcanic complex". At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine. Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦ C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry-related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

The McKinnons gold deposit is hosted by weakly deformed, Palaeozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Cobar Basin in the western Lachlan Fold Belt of New South Wales. Mineralisation comprised a largely supergene resource of 1.7 Mt of ore, grading 1.7 g/t gold, established over structurally controlled, primary gold and base-metal mineralisation in underlying, carbonate-rich meta-siltstones and sandstones of Early Devonian age. Mineralisation was associated with at least two major fluid cycles. The first cycle was characterised by four stages of vein formation. Early quartz and carbonate veins (Stages 1 and 2) and quartz-pyrite breccias (Stage-3) occurred prior to, or early in, the main regional deformation (D1). Continued D1 deformation produced syntectonic, carbonate-base-metal veins (Stage-4), primarily in dilatant zones adjacent to fold axes. The second cycle of mineralisation was an epithermal-style event, driven by a shallow, syn-D2 or post-tectonic intrusion, defined by aeromagnetic imaging. The intrusion may have exploited a jog, controlled along the basin margin by basement faults. Mineralisation produced gold-pyrite veins, associated with pervasive quartz-sericite-adularia and chlorite-sericite alteration. Highest primary gold grades are confined to quartz-adularia boiling zones. The McKinnons deposit offers an important example of mineralisation formed by multiple processes. Early-stage, base-metal mineralisation at McKinnons reflects structurally focussed, basin dewatering and metamorphic processes, typical of other deposits in the Cobar Basin. By contrast, late-stage gold mineralisation at McKinnons is magmatically driven and of epithermal style. Recognition of overprinting distinctive geological events is critical, not only in modelling ore formation, but in developing a versatile exploration concept.

The amount of copper production by flash smelting process occupies about 17% (equivalent to 1.4 million t/year) of total free world production. In Japan, 650,000 tons of copper is produced annually by flash smelting. This is 65% of the gross copper production of Japan. To reinforce pollution control, promote energy saving, and enhance production efficiency by increasing the size of furnaces, conventional blast furnaces and reverberatory furnaces are being replaced with the flash smelters worldwide. The Ashio Smelter started copper production in 1884 and developed in association with the Ashio mine. In those days, the Ashio smelter produced copper by using the blast furnace process designed for the high-grade ore from the copper mine. At that time, this process was specialized in Japan. In 1956, for the first time in Japan, the Ashio Smelter introduced the flash smelting process developed by Outokumpu Oy of Finland (it is suitable for treating the copper concentrate, producing sulfuric acid and improving production efficiency). The flash furnace in Ashio, the first ever in Japan, had a capacity of 230 t/day for copper concentrate and was operated up to 1962. During this period, various operational troubles were solved, and further improvements were made; and, in 1962, a Furukawa-type flash smelting furnace was completed in Ashio. This improved version of a flash furnace had a capacity of 450 t/day. There was one flash furnace and one waste heat boiler, which were arranged in a unique pattern for that time. This furnace may be said to be the prototype of the present flash smelting process in the world.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. The Rio Capim kaolin district, located in the north-east of Parß State, Brazil, constitutes one of the worldÆs largest high-whiteness kaolin reserves for the paper coating industry. It contains, at the base of the main ore, a soft kaolin that gradually changes at the top into a ferruginous duricrust followed by a flint kaolin. The flint kaolin is completely discarded during the exploitation of the soft kaolin. With the view of a more complete beneficiation, aiming at a sustainable development of the minerals industry, the use of this residual flint kaolin has been considered for the manufacturing of zeolites. Zeolites were synthesised from the flint kaolin through a reaction between metakaolinite with soda at 80¦C, for durations of 24 to 144 hours. The transformation into metakaolinite was carried out at 800¦C and was not affected by the titanium oxides. For a synthesis time of only 24 hours, a zeolite 4A very close to its theoretical definition was obtained, whereas for synthesis times longer than 96 hours, a slight formation of hydro-sodalite was also observed. The synthesised zeolites were tested as cationic adsorbents on 0.5 molar solutions of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. The adsorption was measured for contact durations of one and three days. It was noted that the exchange kinetics were slow and that the retention was significantly greater after three days than after one day. The retention was greater than 50 per cent of the theoretical exchange capacity for Pb, Cd and Zn, which was different to Cu, where the retention exceeded its theoretical exchange capacity.

We conducted a preliminary assessment of an extensive deposit of historic tailings discharged over a period of 40 years to the shoreline along a Southern Peruvian coastline. The tailings formed an extensive beach approximately 2.4 km long and 300 m wide. The tailings consist principally of pyrite (37 to 59 per cent), hematite (nine to 20 per cent), magnetite (three to 13 per cent) and quartz (11 to 36 per cent). The present operating company was required to evaluate the feasibility of capping the ocean side tailings deposit, however, given the size of the undertaking and the potential to reclaim residual minerals from the tailings, it was prudent to first evaluate whether capping would in fact reduce the impacts to the marine environment. Therefore this preliminary assessment examined: 1. metals contamination in tailings, shoreline porewater and marine sediments; 2. reactivity of tailings and acid generation potential; and 3. the potential for biological effects from metal contamination in the uplands tailings (solid phase) and beach porewater. Based on mineralogy, column leach studies and chemical results, the upland tailings have a high geochemical potential to acidify and release metals, especially copper, nickel and zinc, should they be subject to oxygenated and aqueous conditions. But, the extreme arid climate results in very low potential for precipitation and virtually precludes the transport of acid drainage reaction products from the upland tailings towards ocean. Wind erosion caused by offshore winds is likely a small source of tailing transport to the ocean. Since some potential exists to reprocess the tailings in the future, capping does not seem justified at present.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. Number of belts and design of equipment.7. Cross-sectional area of tunnel.8. Inclination of tunnel.9. Surface drainage.10. Type of equipment for drifting the tunnel.11. The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

Modern petroleum refining offers a complexity of environments, each requiring different metals for the satisfactory performance of-the various sections of the refinery, and this paper first outlines the varied enva.x¦on-ments thus met.It follows that the metal types in use will also vary to suit each particular environment, and the paper' consequently covers the use of ferrous-metals, ranging from plan carbon steels to the high alloy types and the non-ferrous metals, particularly copper and its alloys.The failures of some,of these metals and alloys are then illustrated by experiences it Kwinana. These failures are duo to (a) corrosion, (b) erosion, (c) faulty welding, and (d) mechanical defects,' of which the first is by far the most prevalent. The protective measures taken to prevent subsequent failures are then given under one or other of the following headings :(1) alterations in process conditions, (2) the use of alternative ,alloys,(3) suitable heat treatment, (4) redesign of the failed section, (5) cathodic protection, and (6) use of corrosion inhibitors.Reference is then made to the use of specialised metals and alloys.Metals, generally in the form of oxides or salts, are also used as catalysts in refining processes. Activated alumina is used, combined with silica .forScracking' of heavy oils, and as a support -for platinum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and similar metals, which catalyse hydro-genation and dehydrogenation-processes. .In the final formulation of petroleum products metallic compounds may be added. Reference is made to the large quantities of lead used by the petroleum industry and to the use of metallic soaps and detergents in the formulation of lubricating oils and greases.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.

A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant.
