Proterozoic gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline are at present receiving renewed attention with the opening of old mines and several new discoveries. This important polymetallic province contains occurrences of gold, base metals, tin, tungsten, tantalum, platinum, palladium and aluminium. These resources have been exploited over the past century with periods of major interest during the turn of the century and during the past 20 years. Economically viable resources of predominantly gold, eg Pine Creek, Woolwonga, Brocks Creek and Union Reefs, and Ag-Pb-Zn, eg Woodcutters are currently in development or being mined. A variety of genetic models, ranging from magmatic through hydrothermal to syngenetic, have been postulated in the past for the formation of gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The first discussion on the regional geological factors that control ore deposition in the Brocks Creek-Howley District was by Sullivan and Iten (1952). They recognised that the most important ore deposits are associated with anticlinal and domal structures and that granites may be a controlling factor in the localisation of the mineralisation. More recently a group of authors, Needham and Roarty (1980), Goulevitch (1980), Nicholson and Eupene (1984), Sanger-Von Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, (1988), Nicholson and Eupene (1990) and Kruse, Whitehead and Mulder (1990) have suggested an exhalitive syngenetic origin, or remobilised syngenetic during dolerite intrusion and/or regional deformation, for gold mineralisation, especially those associated with South Alligator Group lithologies (eg Bridge Creek, Mt Bonnie group of mines and Cosmopolitan Howley). Studies carried out at the Bridge Creek and Western Arm Prospects over the last three years suggest that syngenetic models for gold mineralisation are less relevant to gold mineralisation in the Howley District than first thought (Wall, 1989; Partington, 1990). The Bridge Creek prospect has been cited as an example of a syngenetic-syngenetic remobilised deposit (Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, 1988) while the Western Arm prospect is more clearly a vein hosted epigenetic deposit and a comparison of the styles of mineralisation at both prospects will be made. The nature of the gold mineralisation at both prospects will be described and compared, and possible genetic models for gold mineralisation and their relevance to regional exploration discussed.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. "Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. The methods used by the Anglo American Corporation for analysis of long-term metal markets and prices are described. The principal factors affecting the relationships between production costs and metal prices are analysed. These are firstly the type of market, - speculative or consumer commodity, free market or subject to price control; and secondly the rate of growth of demand for the metal. It is shown that virtually all metals will have relatively low rates of demand growth for the foreseeable future, due to market saturation, increased economisation, substitution and product obsolescence. Metal prices have a clear dependance on production costs, however forecasting future costs is by no means simple; amongst other things, account must be taken of changing exchange rates, inflation rates, and the potential for operating more efficiently. The paper concludes by giving brief assessments of the long-term future for aluminium, copper, zinc, nickel and tin.

The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

Managers are demanding efficient use of their resources and part of this demand is leading to the idea of integrated audits for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), quality and the environment. It is possible to construct audits which test the compliance in this area with standards established by management systems and it may be that such an integrated audit of a site could reduce the time of auditing and be equally effective as three separate audits. However, this is only a maybe. To do an audit on all three aspects when they are not fully integrated results in more time wastage than doing three separate audits. But organisations are not structured around the audit process (some financial managers may query this statement). The organisational management systems are put in place to achieve the organisational goals - presumably in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthermometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10-15 pm in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170-220¦C in early 2A veins, 165-322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190-256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8-11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt. Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 ¦m are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160-268¦C and salinities of 5-8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Heap leaching is establishing itself as an efficient method for the extraction of gold from low grade ore. It has the advantage of low capital costs, low operating costs and rapid startup. However, not all ores are amenable to heap leaching. It is only applicable to well oxidized ores that have reasonable permeability characteristics. Ore with excess fines or clay often display low permeability and are unsuitable for heap leaching.In this study, an attempt has been made to increase the rate of cyanide leach solution percolation by flocculating clay particles or reducing the surface tension of the leach solution. A wetting agent was found to decrease the rate of gold dissolution, possibly by presenting a hydrophobic surface to the gold particle. Flocculation of the clay increased the solution flow rate. The flocculation agent had no affect on the total gold leached but decreased the leaching rate.

A new least-squares method for inversion of d.c. resistivity soundings from horizontally layered earth is proposed. Powers are used as measured data. Apparent resistivity is generalized and apparent parameters curves are defined. Estimates for parameter errors are often possible even when data errors are unknown or large. Acceptance or rejection of a model is made an easier decision. Total computational effort is often reduced when compared to global least-squares methods, because although several optimizations are needed, few data points are involved in each, and initial guesses are requested only once and not all at the same time. Correlations between parameters may be used to improve solutions. Precise indications for extra needed data points can be conveyed. A test example is worked out and a field sounding, taken by Rijo (1973, personal communication) in an alluvium-filled river valley in north-eastern Brazil, is studied.

The Beverley uranium mine û now in production in the remote north of South Australia at1000 tonnes per annum û was established to meet a projected, but little-recognised shortfallin primary supply of uranium for the nuclear industry in the early part of the 21 st century. Inthe context of AustraliaÆs lack of bi-partisan support for uranium mining and the nuclearindustry, a four to five year window of opportunity existed from 1996 to establish the mine.During this period, Beverley achieved a number of firsts including: the first ISL mine inAustralia; the largest ISL mine in the world and the first to produce more than 500 tonnes ofuranium in its first year; the first to be established under a new Native Title regime in SouthAustralia; and the first to be established under a revised South Australian Mining Act.Beverley was brought into production against the background of: hostile opposition fromanti-nuclear activists; a suspicious and at-times hostile media; a regulatory and politicalcommunity that was unfamiliar with ISL mining; commercially unsophisticated Aboriginalgroups; an inexperienced engineering industry; and the vagaries of development in a remote,semi-arid location with neither population nor infrastructure. The lessons that can be learnedfrom Beverley showed that û like much in life û flexibility and timing are crucial.

The impact of non-ferrous smelters on their local surroundings is well monitored and guarded by various actors: the owners looking for profitability, the villagers looking for employment, the consumers asking for ever cheaper products and services, the government collecting taxes and all cherishing the environmental impact. Recent challenges facing the industry are various new doomsday projections: that we will be running out of base metals, that the ground we dwell on will be contaminated by the use of products. Smelters, such as BolidenÆs R÷nnskSr Smelter have a long history of increasing non-ferrous resources by recycling. It is shown that extraction and recycling of metals together with energy recovery can be integrated in a modern, profitable and clean smelter. Examples of efforts to further improve the business will be discussed such as flowsheet rationalisation, environmental investments, new feed from recycling and energy utilisation.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

While I contemplate the formidable catalogue of bodies and organisations participating in this Conference and the impressive array of qualifications chalked up after the names of the representatives I am indeed honoured to be invited to address you. When I consider the theme you have chosen for your conference I am also somewhat daunted: "The Twenty First Century - Mining for Mankind". It is indeed dramatic, challenging. But what, I ask myself, can a mere KCMG say to all you professional fellows and doctors and academicians? It is not for me to stray on to the more esoteric areas that you will be covering, thereby running the risk of teaching my grandmother how to suck manganese nodules. On the other hand it seems to me that you deserve more than the courtesies, not to say banalities, that are sometimes - sadly, and unjustly - regarded as the stock in trade of diplomats.

In most of the literature, the hydrocyclone is viewed as a black box in which only global variables are present and where the equations are obtained by curve fitting. Recently some work has appeared where the Navier Stokes equations are solved numerically in the hydrocyclone geometry. However, in all of these works the air core surface, which has an important influence on the hydrocyclone dynamical behaviour, is modelled as being a cylindrical surface of fixed radius. In this work, we model the surface of the air core as a free-boundary which has to satisfy a jump condition, the Young-Laplace equation, relating the physics to the geometry. Based on this model, we are able to explain, qualitatively, some phenomena that have puzzled research workers in the field for many years, and can show, through the air core behaviour, the influence of material parameters on the performance of the hydrocyclone.

The non-metallic minerals, excluding the construc- tions and fuel materials have for long been the "poor relations" of the Mining Industry of New South Wales. The State is self-sufficient in only a few of the industrial minerals and is almost completely lacking in any of the essential fertilizers. The deficiencies must be met by imports from overseas and interstate and in fact New South Wales imports some quantity of every one of the non-metallics. For the year 1967 the value of non-metallic mineral production amounted to only $9,390,000 or less than 3.5% of the States total of $275,900,000 for all classes of mining and quarrying. In roughly the same period, the 1967-68 financial year, New South Wales imported non- metallic materials, valued at well in excess of $22,000,000 from overseas and over $2,000,000 from interstate sources.

The stability of access tunnels is one of the main engineering challenges in deep underground mine construction. Many underground hard rock mining operations are now reaching depths where the induced stresses are such that sudden and violent failure of the excavations can occur very soon after construction. The loading conditions on the installed ground support schemes are often underestimated by conventional engineering design methods. Therefore, the actual loading conditions often exceed the installed ground support capacity. This can result in failure of the excavations and, in extreme cases, potentially closure of mining operations amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost production. More frequently, violent excavation instability at great depth causes operational delays, costly and unplanned rehabilitation, as well as risks to worker safety. In order to address this challenge, this paper briefly summarises a modern, innovative approach to the design and construction of mine development at great depth. The process follows seven main steps. The first step is to characterise the rock mass strength, structure and stress. The second step is a stability assessment, which identifies the plausible modes of excavation failure, based on the rock mass characterisation. The third step is the definition of an excavation geometry which is harmonic to the high stress conditions. The fourth step is to prepare a site-specific face destressing drill and blast design which will reduce the potential for rock mass instability during the development construction cycle. The fifth step is to accurately quantify the expected loading conditions on the installed ground support. The method of doing so is uniquely analytical and probabilistic. It is based on the natural mechanical relationships between rock strength, structure, induced stress and the physical characteristics of the instability, including its mass and ejection velocity. The sixth step of the design process is to specify a ground support scheme arrangement with sufficient strength and displacement capacity to exceed the rock mass demand by a safe margin. The final stage is to install the complete ground support scheme using mechanised technologies which minimise the exposure of the equipment operators to unsupported ground at the tunnel face.

The Cannington deposit is one of the largest accumulations of silver-lead known. Located 135 km southeast of Cloncurry in North West Queensland (Figure 1), Australia, the deposit is currently in the feasibility stage of its development. The deposit is named after the nearby Cannington Pastoral Property which runs some 25 000 sheep on 'downs' country. The investigations of the Cannington deposit are carried out under the authority of Mineral Development Licences 139 and 144 and Exploration Permit for Minerals 6788, Answer Downs. Exploration for Broken Hill Type (BHT) silver-lead-zinc deposits in the Mt Isa region has been undertaken by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited's Minerals Division (BHPM) since the early 1980s following in-house research which showed that the Eastern Succession of the Mt Isa Block exhibits characteristics which were favourable for hosting BHT

Mining and metallurgy are more capital intensive than all other industry in Australia. Capital demands are met by domestic and foreign sources of finance for whom the major constraints are the supply of funds and factors of risk and uncertainty. in both mineral development and institutional financing policies, specific options are available to administrators which would allow mining to benefit from a more reliable supply of capital. The strength of major partners involved and overseas participation are important aspects of financing mineral developments. Future changes in financing for the mineral industry are considered most likely in variable interest rate funding, in the leasing of major plant items, and in the development of flexible techniques to ease the burden of infrastructure costs. In a consultancy sense, financiers are available to mining to assist with and to advise on optimal develop- ment of mineral industry projects.

Explosives have been an important tool for unlocking minearl wealth from the earth's crust for several countries. In'the past, innovation in explosives technology, spurred on by industry needs has assisted the Mining Industry to improve productivity and reduce costs. A symbolic relationship exists between Explosives and Mining. Australia has vast mineral wealth. Our Mining Industry is of major importance to the Economy., The value of mineral produc- tion in 1987 was $25 million or 10% of GDP. Australian Mining is a business depending on international markets. The Mining Industry is our leading export earner, generating 44% of all export income. 60% of mineral production is exported. About half of these minerals are extracted using explosives. Explosives rank as one of the top three consumable expenditures for a mine. For example: A major open-cut iron or coal mine can spend $6 million dollar per annum on explosives.

Mineral exploration management has undergone major changes particularly in the last decade. Parallel to these changes in management, and partially responsible for them, have been the changes in governmental laws and regulations at both National and State levels reinforced by a highly competitive climate created by the exploration boom in Australia. The influence of overseas methods and approaches have been married to the Australian techniques resulting in a management climate which is not only familiar with the technical aspects of exploration, but is also familiar with the personnel, economic and legal phases associated with the expenditure of very large sums of money. The utilization of all the geosciences coupled with mathematical models and computer techniques for pre-selection and assessment of areas are now normal aids used in management decisions. Management techniques developed and being developed will ensure that successful exploration will be carried out if sufficient incentives are guaranteed.
