The composition and volume of geothermal fluids in New Zealand offers considerable potential for the extraction of various metals and minerals, as well as being a source of heat energy, steam and gases, and for use in generating electricity. While extracting products from geothermal fluids is technically feasible, positive economics is the key driver for commercial success; however, there is no assessment of this opportunity that identifies simple, cost-effective processing technologies and provides a greater understanding of the economic viability and barriers for implementing such technologies. The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. In 1991, two autogenous grinding mills were installed replacing two stages of crushing, one stage of rod milling and one stage of primary ball milling. The cyclone overflow P80 of the secondary ball milling circuit was reduced to 120 microns due to the increased operating power in the AG/SAG mill circuits. A study of the mineralogy of the milled products and the plant flotation recovery indicated that the installed secondary grinding energy was more than what was required for adequate liberation of the chalcopyrite and half of it had potential for more effective use elsewhere. Halving the secondary grinding energy meant only one of the two secondary ball mills would be needed. The predicted saving in operating cost of one less ball mill was more than two million dollars per annum. This paper summarises various plant trials that were conducted in the Copper Concentrator to decommission one of the two secondary ball mills.

Success for underground coal mine operators in the 1990's and beyond will be dependent upon better understanding of the dynamics of their operating environment, and extension of emerging technologies to reach new levels of output and productivity. The Collieries Division of B.H.P. Steel International Group clearly identifies with the concept of business/product life cycles - and the need to adopt strategies that can drive the business successfully into the future. Three main thrusts within BHP Collieries Division relate to: 1) Detailed assessment of current mines to determine: a) The real output potential of the current facilities. b) What factors now inhibit the full potential from being realised. c) Opportunities that exist to enhance overall mine performance. 2) Based upon the findings of these studies, putting into place cost effective strategies and systems for the ongoing "tuning" of the mine. 3) of new/improved technology primarily in areas of: a) Coal cutting and underground coal clearance. b) Controlling the overall mine gas Regime.

A series of organoclays with different surfactant arrangements were prepared by ion exchange. The resulting organoclays were investigated using a combination of characterisation techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric measurement (TG) and N2 adsorption-desorption. In the present study, the pores within the organoclays were discussed on the basis of the micro- structural parameters, including BET-N2 surface area, pore volume, pore size, surfactant loading and distribution. The results show that both BET-N2 surface area and pore volume decrease from low to high packing density of the surfactant as the average pore size increases. Two basic organoclay models were proposed for hexadecyltrimethyl- ammonium bromide (HDTMAB) modified montmorillonites: 1. the surfactant mainly occupied the clay interlayer, and2. both the clay interlayer space and external surface were modified by surfactant. This study demonstrates that the pore structure of the resulting organoclays has a significant influence on the sorption efficiency and mechanism of p-nitrophenol onto the organoclays.

Comalco's Bell Bay smelter produces some 94 000 t.p.a. of primary aluminium in the form of foundry alloys, extrusion billet and rolling blocks. The extrusion billet and rolling block are produced by a process, in which molten aluminium is poured into an open ended water cooled mould of the required shape. The bottom of the mould is initially closed off by a dummy or starting block. Primary cooling takes place at the mould wall and secondary cooling is achieved by direct water sprays onto the out side shell of the product. Careful preparation of the molten alumin- ium is essential if stringent alloy specific- ation limits are to be met. Optimum casting temperature must be maintained within a narrow range and metal cleanliness is important to ensure a consistent product. As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

The metallurgical works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company is situated on the Derwent Estuary, approximately five miles north of the city of Hobart and near a relatively dense housing area. Zinc concentrates, consisting chiefly of zinc and sulphur, have been roasted at Risdon for 53 years;- recently at rates of 1, 100 tons per day. The zinc content of the ores is converted to zinc calcine (ZnO), which is a dusty material. The calcine is leached with acid to form zinc sulphate, which is then electrolysed to make zinc. The sulphur is oxidised during roasting to sulphur dioxide, part of which is converted to sulphuric acid and part is dissolved in estuarine water which is then discharged to the Derwent Estuary. One of the major changes in the resource industry in the nineties has been the re-internationalisation of the industry. The history of the resource business has been one of companies from the developed world utilising the cash flows from their operations to explore and develop mines in less developed regions of the world. This resource development has progressively generated wealth and economic development, which in turn, has led to a new generation of exploration and mining projects. In South America, Chile had led the way in a mining resurgence, now closely followed by Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Peru. Although Chile has long had a significant copper mining industry, the pre-nationalisation phase was driven by American capital; the current phase has been spearheaded by R.T.Z. - B.H.P. at Escondida with Canadian junior companies, in particular, providing major speculative impetus. The Australian junior companies have not been significant in South America.

Coal Mining in India had been confined in the past primarily to two or three coalfields. Unscientific mining has led to huge degradation of land including massive subsidence of strata and disturbances of water tables to a wide extent. This has caused problems not only in flooding of mines from surface water but also in further planning of the surface drainage for current mining activities. Now, therefore, surface hydrology and land-use potentialities of the area have been endangered inflicting severe damage to the overall environment and ecology of the area. The paper Discusses certain investigative aspects of the problems highlighted as above in one of the coalfields, and encompasses mainly the following areas : 1) Quantitative estimation of the damage already done to the natural surface drainage system. For this purpose damage to topography and drainage for the last fifty years have been made out through the aerial photographs and topographic map sheets 2) Analysis and comparison of different states of such photographs are carried through to indicate the extent of damage to the hydrological conditions inducing undesirable changes in its land-use pattern. Based on the analysis, concrete suggestions are made to restore the water drainage system which will be most suitable for future mining in the area containing high grade coal. The design and planning of the drainage system is based on the total system approach including the cost benefit analysis as well as hydrological considerations.

The geographic imperative of ore systems leaves mining, more so than virtually any other aspect of modern industry, heavily dependent on obtaining and maintaining social licence to operate. A prospective miner cannot arbitrarily walk away from a deposit in search of more favourable community perceptions – concentrations of mineral endowment represent highly specific and fixed elements of the landscape, and their development and extraction thus requires the acceptance and trust of a specific network of landholders and stakeholders, sometimes with diverse and even competing interests in the development and use of the local environment. Weakness or absence of such social licence can bring added costs and complexity to developing and operating a mine – and in extreme cases even result in project failure. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

Conventional blasthole sampling for grade control has acquired an extremely bad reputation for the last 50 years. The introduction of many sources of bias is a structural reality. Delimitation biases are devastating. Extraction biases are of great concern as well. Weighting biases aggravate an already bad situation. Furthermore, preparation biases are many. Some of these biases are due to the type of drilling machine that is used and are nearly unsolvable. Some of these biases are due to the sampling tools that are used and often unsatisfactory. Attempts to automate blasthole sampling at the drilling site have failed, not because it cannot be done, but mainly because it interferes with drilling productivity. As a result the miner most often rejects the idea after a few weeks of practice. Manual sampling of blasthole piles is a disaster for many reasons; some are related to the methodology, some to the selected sampling protocol, some to the training of operators, some to limited manpower available, and some to limited supervision. Furthermore, with blasthole sampling a time logistic problem is unsolvable as the miner wants the ore grade control geologist to make up his mind within two or three days at most; as a result not enough time is allowed for samplers, preparation facilities, laboratory, and resources department to perform a good job as everyone is working under unreasonable pressure. The economic impact of poor blasthole sampling for grade control has been vastly underestimated by mining companies. The resulting ore grade misclassification is responsible for severe reconciliation problems and massive financial losses every year. This paper suggests areas along this grim scenario where things can be greatly improved; however it is clear that too many problems are unsolvable. An alternative using reverse circulation drilling for grade control is suggested. A thorough analysis of the respective advantages and disadvantages for blasthole and reverse circulation drilling for grade control is presented in this paper.

This study analysed the fracture characteristics and movement process of goaf roofs under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, based on the engineering conditions of Tangshan Mine F5001 gangue backfilled working face. The inclined borehole detection method is adopted to conduct long-term and fixed-point detection of the roof stability. The distribution characteristics of mining-induced cracks in the roof are described quantitatively based on the crack density, and a similar model test method is used to assist the analysis of the roof movement under the control of gangue backfilled mining using stress sensors and digital speckle deformation field monitoring. The results show that under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, structural cracks in the roof typically appear at the boundary of rock strata. The appearance of cracks is related to the rock strata where they are located. Structural cracks appear in the form of single cracks ahead of the working face and develop into structural cracks in the goaf. The roof movement of the coal seam develops in five stages: fracture incubation, crack extension in advance, dense fracture development, steady fracture expansion, and roof stability. Separation forms the primary component of the roof subsidence, accounting for more than half of the subsidence value. The separation generally extends over a long distance along the strike, and vertical crack-intensive areas appear in the roof above the cut-off and stop line. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis to support designs of backfilled mining and upgrading of hydraulic supports in working faces.

The optical basicity (A, Pb2+ as probe ion) of various oxide glass systems has been measured to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts. Best conditions of glassy fragments to measure A were as follow, (1) 1 ti 4 x 10-2 wt% Pb content, (2) 0.2 mm in thickness, (ii) enough annealing (about 10 hr) at a temperature 200¦C below Tg., and (4) polishing a surface well. the variation of A with composition was correlated to that of relative oxygen activity of slag melts. The estimation of basicity of slag melts from it could be valid. The A of opaque and coloured quenched slags could not be measured. An approximately linear relationship, however, exsisted between the isomer shifts (b) of Fe3+ ion in slag derived from the Mossbauer effect and A. Therefore, -4 of various metallurgical slag could be estimated from this relationship. These results can be expected to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts as the Louis basicity.

Steady depletion of the world’s primary copper reserves coupled with a meteoric rise in electronic waste (e-waste) generation has led to secondary copper processing assuming an ever-increasing importance within the global copper industry. Treatment of secondary copper feeds at existing smelting operations has traditionally been performed in the Blast furnace, Peirce-Smith converter and/or anode furnace. In the past decade or more, bath smelting technologies have been preferred for the processing of these materials due to their superior environmental performance and flexibility to operate under a wide range of conditions. This paper focuses on the pyrometallurgical processing of copper secondaries in the Outotec Ausmelt TSL Furnace and some of the unique issues facing secondary copper smelters and downstream gas handling/cleaning equipment.

Calculation of the amount of metal in an ore deposit or mining block should be approached by multiplication and integration of appropriate numerical manifolds describing the spatial distribution of the relevant variables, viz. grade, specific gravity and also thickness for bivariate data. Construction of a numerical manifold necessarily involves some form of interpolation but detailed characteristics of this are often not specified in various automatic methods, some of which even provide manifolds with discontinuities. A manifold used in calculations should describe in a geologically plausible way the spatial distribution of the variable of interest. Different approaches to the problem are discussed and compared. Particular computational inconsistencies emerge when "accumulation" is used as a variable in calculations of average grade. If an ore deposit is variable in relation to its sampling and especially if selection of mining blocks according to grade cut-off is a necessary operational decision, the biases introduced by accumulation methods can bring about serious problems of over-evaluation. Modern computational techniques make unnecessary the use of accumulations; because of potential inconsistencies it would seem unwise to use them in any ore reserve computation.
