More than a quarter of a century has passed since the introduction of the machine known as the Blake crusher, the invention of Eli W. Blake, of New Haven, Conn. Although originally designed for breaking stone for road-metal, its importance for crushing ores of the precious metals, and those of iron, copper, and zinc, as well as emery, phosphates, plaster, etc., mas soon recognized, and for many years its use has been world-wide, and its construction so well known that no special description of it is deemed necessary. Following its introduction, many different machines for the same purpose, containing the same essential features of upright convergent jaws, one of which is movable with respect to the other, hut having some slight modification of such movement (generally a rubbing motion) or of the non-essential method of imparting motion to one or both of the jaws, have been offered to the public for sale and use, but have, as a rule, in time disappeared from the market. If we seek for the reason of the success of the Blake crusher, aside from its simplicity of construction, we shall find it in the adherence to the principle of crushing by simple pressure and careful avoidance of attrition. In this lies the economy of power and of wearingsurfaces. To reduce any hard and brittle material to a fine powder by many different methods—by attrition, impact, or percussion—is a comparatively easy matter; but to accomplish this by the employment of either of the above-mentioned principles involves such a consumption of wearing-surface? (generally iron) or of power, that the numerous devices that have hitherto been presented to the public as solutions of the problem of fine crushing have proved utter and complete failures when tested with reference to the power employed and the wear of iron in doing their work.. The Athens mine is in the city of Negaunee, Mich. It is one of the larger producers of soft hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The property is held under lease by the Athens Iron Mining Co., and is operated by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which is a partner with Pickands, Mather & Co. in the Athens company. The mine was opened in 1913, and shipments of ore commenced in 1918, the total reaching 3,063,711 tons up to Jan. 1, 1932. Diamond-drilling from surface, together with a knowledge of geological conditions in neighboring properties, gave a comprehensive picture of the location, size and shape of the orebody before shaft-sinking started. Striking east and west, the orebody entered the east boundary of the property at a depth of about 1500 ft. below surface. A pitch of 15" to the west carried it down to about 2500 ft. on the west boundary, about double the depth of that of any soft-ore property heretofore worked on the Marquette Range. The width of ore averaged close to 500 ft., and the thickness 300 feet. The depth of the deposit and its size, together with an overburden of quicksand, which in places reached a thickness of 150 ft., presented unusual mining problems. The use of a caving system made surface drainage into the orebody inevitable, because the north boundary of the deposit was a vertical diorite dike 200 ft. wide, and the south boundary a northward-dipping impervious slate. S. R. Elliott, manager of the mining department of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., who was superintendent of the mine at that time, conceived the idea of starting at the bottom of the orebody and working upward, reversing the usual mining procedure. This innovation divided the Athens orebody into a series of steps, or blocks, the first of which was adjacent to the western boundary, and therefore in the lowest portion of the deposit. Top-slicing was to start under the capping in this first block by raising from the bottom level, and development and mining were to progress upward in successive blocks to the east. Mine fires are a serious hazard; surveys show that the coal-mining industry lags considerably behind industry in general in planning and training for fighting fires, and providing adequate fire-protection facilities. The results of the experiments discussed in this paper emphasize that every effort must be made to extinguish a fire in its incipient stage. The research also demonstrated that extinguishing agents and techniques, superior to those presently used in most operating mines, are available. An underground coal mine fire, if not extinguished quickly, can develop rapidly, create a serious hazard, and cause loss of life and property. The problem of controlling a fire increases in direct relationship to the time interval necessary to initiate control measures; as the fire increases in size and intensity it becomes progressively more difficult to cope with roof control, visibility, ventilation, and explosion prevention. Despite the constant vigilance of the industry, the number of coal mine fires is increasing. During the eight-year period, July 1952 to July 1960, following enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the Bureau of Mines investigated 401 fires that caused 30 fatalities and 75 injuries. More than half of these fires burned for more than one shift; 20 pct could not be extinguished by direct attack and had to be sealed. Agents and techniques for extinguishing simulated mining-machine and underground coal fires have been investigated in the Bureau's experimental coal mine. The research shows that visibility in the fire area is a primary factor affecting control operations. Associated with good visibility is accessibility to the fire; the closer the attack can be made, the less time and quantity of agent are required for extinguishment. Approach to the fire and visibility are hindered by the smoke and hot gases backing up against the ventilating current. In open entries an increase in air velocity assists in driving smoke ahead; at low airspeeds approach can be made by placing a brattice across the lower two-thirds of the entry, pushing the smoke ahead with water sprays, or discharging rock-dust from a rock-dust distributor. Calculations are presented for the prediction of the combined radiative-convective heat loss from molten steel held in a ladle, covered by initially molten slag. A mathematical formulation is given and numerical solutions are presented of the resultant partial differential equation. It is shown that a slag layer of about 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss from the top metal surface for Periods of up to 1 hr. For thinner slag layers (or in the absence of the protective slag) appreciable heat losses would occur; plots given in the paper allow the quantitative evaluation of the fall in the metal temperature due to this heat loss. The ironmaking-steel processing operation involves several intermediate steps where the molten metal is held or transfered in ladles. The quantitative assessment of the heat losses occurring under these conditions is of considerable importance in process design considerations since the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in any given part of the processing sequence. While the metal is held in a ladle, heat is lost by two mechanisms: i) by conduction into the ladle walls; ii) by radiation and convection from the top surface. Calculations relating to the conductive heat loss, are readily made and information may be found in the literature both on data pertaining to metallurgical situations and on the techniques that are available for performing additional computations.'-3 The evaluation of the combined convective-radiative heat loss is less straightforward, especially when there exists a protective slag layer covering the metal. In this latter case, as the top slag surface loses heat partial solidification may occur and the latent heat thus given up by the slag may represent an effective barrier to the heat loss from the metal. A semiquantitative assessment of the role played by the slag in preventing heat loss from the metal has been made in a previous paper,4 where it was shown that a slag layer 6 in. thick would act as a near-perfect insulator for periods of up to 2 hr. However, this first paper reported on an essentially preliminary investigation that considered only one slag layer thickness; furthermore, the boundary conditions used for the calculations were somewhat restrictive since no allowance was made for changes in the metal temperature. The purpose of this second paper is to extend the scope of the preliminary investigation previously reported by: i) considering several slag layer thicknesses; ii) allowing for variations in the metal temperature; and finally iii) by performing calculations on the net loss from the metal rather than from the slag surface. FORMULATION Consider a slag phase extending from y = 0 to y = L1, covering a metal phase that occupies the region extending from y = Ll to y = L, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Denote the slag and metal temperatures by TS and Tm and assume that initially both slag and metal are molten, having a uniform temperature Ti. At time = zero the surface represented by the y = 0 plane (top slag surface) is brought into contact with cold air, the temperature of which is given as T Thus for time > zero, heat will be transfered from the slag to the air by natural convection and thermal radiation; as a result of this heat loss the slag temperature will fall and after some time a solid phase is formed and a solidification boundary (more realistically described as a zone) will move progressively from y = 0 toward y = L1. Once the region of temperature gradients, moving ahead of the solidification zone, reach the slag-metal interface (y = L1) there will be a net transfer of heat from the metal through the slag to the cold air, across the y = 0 plane. In the formulation of moving boundary problems, involving phase changes that require computer solution, it is convenient to represent both phases by a single equation, making allowance for the latent heat of solidification by assigning an appropriate temperature dependence to the specific heat content. Thus the energy equation for the whole of the slag may be written as follows:

The van Arkel-deBoer method for producing ductile titanium by thermal decomposition of Til, vapor and deposition on an electrically heated filament is modified by film boiling Til liquid on a heated filament, resulting in similar titanium deposition on the filament and liberation of gaseous iodine. The deposition rate is higher and the energy requirement smaller than in the van Arkel process. Many problems must be solved before the process is commercially feasible. TITANIUM of 99.9 pct purity, called ductile titanium, has been produced by a modification of the van Arkel-deBoer&apos; method. In the van Arkel-deBoer method, an electrically heated wire is suspended from two electrodes, which are placed in a container holding TiI, vapor at a low&apos; vapor pressure (usually <5 mm Hg). The vapor diffuses to the hot wire, usually maintained at 1100" to 1600°C,&apos; and decomposes according to the reaction liberating gaseous atomic iodine and depositing solid crystalline titanium on the wire. Estimations based on the data of Runnalls and Pidgeon,&apos; indicate that the rate-control ling step is the diffusion of atomic iodine away from the wire. There appears to be nearly thermodynamic equilibrium at the wire with TiI, and iodine as the main gaseous species. TiI, is almost certainly an important gaseous species in the cooler regions.&apos; The liberated iodine diffuses to a heated source of crude titanium and reacts to form more TiI, vapor, which again diffuses to the hot wire and completes the cyclic process. The foregoing process may be modified by suspending the hot wire in liquid TiI,, instead of the vapor, and obtaining film boiling. This type of boiling is characterized by the formation of a continuous film of vapor over the wire surface. Since only vapor contacts the wire sul.face, the temperature of this surface may be raised as high as desirable, within the limit of mechanical strength requirements for the wire. By properly adjusting the input voltage. the temperature of the wire may be maintained above U0C"C; and by evacuating the vessel holding the liquid TiI, and maintaining a suitable condenser temperature, the vapor pressure of TiI, may be held low. Thus, the conditions of operation of the van Arkel-deBoer method may be approximated with film boiling; and hence, it is postulated that ductile titanium may be produced by this method. Preparation of Til, There are many methods available for the preparation of TiI,; that used in this research was prepared by the direct reaction of titanium sponge in controlled amounts with liquid iodine. Although no difficulty was encountered with this reaction, it has since been pointed out that this method is sometimes dangerous and should be used with caution. The resulting TiI, was purified by distillation. First Film Boiling Experiments Apparatus: The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 was used for film boiling TiI, on short wire filaments. The current to the filament was supplied through a bank of three 5 kva transformers connected in parallel. The current was controlled by adjusting the voltage over a 0 to 67.5 v range with a 7 kva variable transformer on the low voltage side of the bank of transformers. The current and voltage were measured by Weston meters. The sealed-in-glass tungsten electrodes were hard-soldered to the filament for the film boiling of TiI,. The bottom part of the reactor, containing TiI,, was wrapped with ni-chrome heating wires to maintain the TiI, in the liquid state. An ice or liquid nitrogen trap, for solidifying I, vapor and any TiI, not condensed, was attached to the low pressure side of the air-cooled condenser. A Megavac vacuum pump was used. Procedure: A 0.010 in. diam tungsten filament was hard-soldered to the tungsten electrodes. TiI, was melted (mp 156°C) and poured into the reactor chamber; the top of the reactor chamber, containing the electrodes, was replaced. Freezing of the TiI, was prevented by controlling the current to the ni-chrome wires wrapped around the reactor with a 1 kva variable transformer. The mechanical vacuum pump was started and the system evacuated to about 2 mm Hg TiI, vapor pressure. It is proposed that shape anisotropy in the internal structure of materials be defined by distribution functions which specify what fraction of the total line length or boundary area lies in a given direction. Methods are descriibed for determinirg these distribution functions from measurements on sections through an opaque material. New derivations, that have certain advanifages over those given previously, are Provided for well-known expressions used in estinzating the total density of lineal or areal features. INCREASING attention is being given to the quantitative description of imicrostructures in metals and other materials. This interest stems from the recognition that the structure often provides a convenient half-way point between the properties on the one hand and the processing variables on the other. Such cross correlations become increasingly desirable as materials become more complex and the demands on them more stringent. One of the principal aims in structure analysis is therefore to find parameters that are readily measurable and specific enough to be correlated with other properties of the material. Certain properties, such as magnetic and mechani cal behavior, are strongly influenced by structural anisotropies; in order to relate such properties to the structure it is obviously necessary to have means of specifying and measuring the type and degree of anisotropy. For the determination of preferred orientations in crystal structure, X-ray diffraction methods are available and are widely used, but scant attention has been given to the estimation of anisotropy in the shape of grains and particles. It is the latter problem that will be considered in this paper. It is evident that shape anisotropy can be describe in terms of preferred orientations of lineal and area elements of the structure. It will be shown that these preferred orientations can, in turn, be specified by distribution functions that define what fraction of the total line length or boundary area lies in a given direction. Methods will be given for determining the distribution functions from measurements on sections through the structure. Even when the orientation distributions are of no interest per se, they still have an important bearing on the measurement of the total line length or boundary area by means of an intercept analysis. The treatment in terms of orientation distribution functions leads to new derivations, that have certain advantages of those given previously, for the well-known expressions used in estimating the total density of lineal or areal features. The treatment is divided into two main sections. The first deals with the orientation distribution of a two-dimensional array of lineal features such as occurs in the projected image of dislocations in electron transmission microscopy. The other section treats the estimation of the distribution of lineal and areal features dispersed in three dimensions.

Any stratigraphic section or bedding sequence can be synthesized if there is a transition procedure from one lithology or bedding type to another, and if thickness distributions of the different lithologies are known. Stratigraphic sections of a fluvial sandstone body were synthesized with five bedding types: cross-bedding, massive beds, parting lineation, ripple mark and mudstone. The transition procedure from one bedding type to another used dependent, Markovian random processes which have a memory that extends one step backward in the depositional process. As observed in nature, median grain size and sand wave thickness (cross-bedding and ripple mark) decline upward in the synthesized sections as proportions of the different bedding types change. Grain size and permeability were also incorporated into the sections. By changing the transition procedures, bed thickness distributions, rate of upward decline or sand wave height and length, different types of sections can be synthesized, thus making it possible to model many different sedimentation problems. INTRODUCTION This paper describes a general method for synthesizing stratigraphic sections and bedding sequences of sedimentary, metamorphic or igneous origin. Synthetic generation is of interest for several reasons. Close correspondence between real and synthetic sections suggests that the factors used in the synthesizing model may indeed be the correct ones, thus giving the investigator a check on his assumptions. Rapid, inexpensive simulation of many stratigraphic sections permits one to synthesize a rock body (sandstone or carbonate reservoir) or, on a larger scale, the fill of a sedimentary basin. Harbaughl gives an example of mathematical simulation of a carbonate basin. He simulated the basin in the hope that improved prediction would follow better understanding of the depositional processes. From the petroleum engineer&apos;s viewpoint it seems reasonable to believe that the synthetic generation of rock properties and their distribution in a reservoir should be relevant in the study of reservoirs. Any stratigraphic section or bedding sequence can be generated provided there is a transition procedure from one lithology or bedding type to another, and provided the thickness distributions of the different units are known. The transition procedure involves random processes that are either independent or dependent. If the depositional process is independent, previous deposition will have no influence on present deposition. However, if it is dependent, past deposition will influence either present or future deposition. Such a dependent depositional process can be thought of as having a memory that extends backward in time through one or more pulses of deposition. A process with a memory can be described by a Markov process. Because the concept of memory or dependence appears to be in accord with our understanding of many depositional processes, Markov processes were used to synthesize the bedding sequences of this study (see Appendix). The above methods are perfectly general and are appropriate for any stratigraphic section or bedding sequence: bedding types in a beach deposit, an evolving carbonate bank or the changing lithologic fill of a thick geosyncline sequence. We chose to synthesize a vertical profile of a fluvial sandstone body because its characteristics were well documented, much was known about fluvial processes and fluvial-deltaic sandstone bodies constitute an important class of petroleum reservoirs. CHARACTERISTICS AND ORIGIN OF FLUVIAL CYCLE The fluvial cycle has been well documented in recent years by Bersier,2 Allen3-5and Visher.6,7 Deposits from fluvial cycles range from 10 to 150 ft or more in thickness and are characterized by a "fining upwards": coarse sandstones with occasional conglomerates grade upward into medium- to fine-grained sandstone, and hence into siltstone and mudstone. Photogrammetrists are studying with new interest the problems of mine mapping and mining engineers are beginning to see what photogrammetry can do for them. Administrators in a number of European and U. S. mines have tried photogram- metric methods and are finding that better maps and data, needed for mine development, can be produced with savings of time, men, and money. In addition to wide use in small scale mapping projects, photogrammetric methods are now used for producing large scale plans and maps in German coal and lignite mines, in some U. S. open pit mines, to inventory TVA coal stock piles, and to compute highway excavation volumes. In each case surveying and map compilation has been made more efficient and accurate by photogrammetry and at significant savings over ground methods.

INTRODUCTION The first stage in planning any mining venture is to determine whether the reserves are of sufficient quantity and quality to warrant commencement of mining activities. In addition to total reserve values a modern mining operation requires information on possible support problems, various pillar sizes, and an estimate on recoverable reserves. To achieve this goal in U. S. coal mines, up-to-date computer methods have been applied to existing ground control technology to provide the mining engineer with a reasonably accurate method of determining such figures. The purpose of this paper is to present a mine planning suite comprised of three computer programs, CONTUR, RESERV-COAL and RAMPLAN, created to accomplish this task. These programs were developed at VPI under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research (now Energy Research and Development Administration), and are currently available to the mining industry. A basic assumption in the construction of the CONTUR program is that a coal seam is variable in nature. The data available to the mining engineer comes from randomly spaced points, namely boreholes and sampling points, on outcrops or in adjacent mines. These randomly spaced data points are used in the CONTUR program to estimate numerical values at evenly spaced grid points and to provide approximate contour plans. Given the necessary gridded data, RESERV-COAL calculates raw and clean coal tonnages and then provides breakdown on the quantity of coal within specified ranges of ash, sulfur, BTU and reject. RAMPLAN (Rock Mechanics Applied to Mine Planning) also uses gridded data to calculate mining dimensions and estimate recoverable reserves, thereby

When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. Successful mining of taconite has required the solution of a series of difficult problems, including more efficient magnetic separation. Progress in this field is evidenced by reductions in operating and capital costs made possible by the advances in permanent magnetic materials and in new circuits for better utilization of these materials. The advent of the flux control circuit appears to be one of the more important breakthroughs in permanent magnet drum design circuitry and has contributed greatly to the economics and metallurgical requirements of the modern day taconite concentrators. High strength permanent magnetic separators are now replacing electro types in many applications requiring field strengths of 900 - 1000 gauss measured at 2 in. This is made possible by the new circuits having gauss readings at 2 in. previously attained only by electromagnets.

This paper deals with the methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. The fact that the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines causes a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over 15 varieties are mined on a scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at the rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, as far as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin1 and will not be considered here. Geographical and Geological Features of California Clay Deposits The greater part of the high-grade clays consumed by clay-working plants in California is mined from one of three producing areas in the state: (1) Lincoln, Placer County, on the eastern edge of the Sacramento valley, 30 miles northeast of Sacramento; (2) Ione, Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, 38 miles northeast of Stockton, and 12 miles west of Jackson, one of the important towns of the famous Mother Lode gold-mining district; and (3) Alberhill, Riverside County, 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Other districts of minor importance are near Cardiff and Carlsbad, San Diego County, and El Toro and San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. In addition, there are a number of isolated properties in various parts of the state.

After shotcrete had been in use for a short time al the Climax Mine of the Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo., it was noted that regular longhole undercutting blasts would severely damage or detach slusher drift shotcrete linings. If this were to be a usual occurrence, the widespread application of shotcrete would have to be reexamined or abandoned. Concrete drift linings are affected less by blasting because of occasional significant gaps between the placed concrete and rock and the greater thickness of poured-in-place linings. The rate of copper corrosion in liquid lead was studied as a function of flow rate and temperature in a closed isothermal loop system between 350" and 500°C. Kinetic data were interpreted with the Nernst-Brunner equation and the Chilton-Colbum mass transfer analogy to heat transfer. Over the range of temperatures and flow rates employed the solution rate constant varied from 2 x 10-3 to 20 x 10-3 cm per sec. The rate constant was found to vary with the 0.76 power of the Reynolds number in the range 7500 < Re < 40,000. The results of this investigation indicate that the Cu-Pb corrosion process is controlled largely by diffusion across a boundary layer. particularly at the higher temperatures. The effective boundary layer for diffusion is found to be approximately three to four times smaller than the momentum boundary layer. CORROSION by liquid metals has long been a problem during melting, static containment, and casting. Recently, considerable emphasis has been placed on the understanding of liquid metal corrosion mechanisms in an effort to prevent mass transfer and eventual failure in liquid metal heat exchangers and in liquid-metal-fueled nuclear reactors. The present investigation was conducted to determine the relationships which exist between corrosion kinetics and hydrodynamic conditions in an isothermal loop containing a simple liquid metal-solid metal corrosion system. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for its simplicity and ease in handling. Previous isothermal Cu-Pb corrosion studies1-3 have been conducted in both static and dynamic systems but not under conditions which allow easy "scale-up" to engineering systems, such as liquid metal heat exchangers. On the other hand, most liquid metal loops which have been used to evaluate mass transfer rates4 have been driven with temperature gradients under conditions of natural convection and unknown flow rates. The primary contributions of this research are twofold: 1) to evaluate the design of a simple isothermal loop corrosion system and 2) to investigate liquid metal corrosion behavior under well-defined hydrodynamic conditions. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The apparatus used to measure the Cu-Pb corrosion rates is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The loop system consisted of 1) a reservoir made of Type 316 stainless steel containing a centrifugal pump and 2) stainless-steel tubing containing a removable copper test section. The copper test section was OFHC hard-drawn tubing, 11.0 0.05 cm in length and 0.775 ±0.005 cm ID. A Type 316 stainless-steel venturi meter* was inserted in place of the copper test sec- tion in order to determine the lead velocity as a function of pump speed at each temperature. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for this study because the solubility of copper in liquid lead is large enough to measure accurately but small enough that the diameter of the copper tubing was not changed significantly by corrosion. There are no intermediate phases formed in the system, and the solid solubility of lead in copper is vanishingly small so that back-diffusion cannot occur. Molten lead (corroding grade; 99.94+ pct Pb, 0.0015 max pct Cu) was charged from an auxiliary melting furnace into the system under an argon cover to minimize oxidation. The lead was then maintained at constant temperature by a stirred molten salt bath in which the loop was immersed to a depth just above the lead level in the reservoir, Fig. 1. The total volume of lead in the system was 320 2 cu cm.

The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineering arts embraced by it through interchange of knowledge. This can best be clone by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that will he a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper frequently leads to a reorientation of the author&apos;s thoughts, and publication contributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following suggestions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts. 1. SUBJECTS: The subject must be within the field of the Institute. Original work, the results of field, plant, laboratory or theoretical investigations, new views on old but important problems and occasionally reviews of timely and important subjects of wide interest to our members may constitute the basis of a paper. The mere fact that the work is original does not necessarily justify publication: it must be of a substantial nature, of value to a reasonable number of our members and worthy of permanent record. It is seldom desirable to subdivide the results of a single research for publication in a variety of journals. Previous publication is usually a bar to acceptance. If any part of your paper has been published elsewhere and you regard repetition as absolutely necessary please so state in your covering letter. 2. CONSTRUCTION: Papers should be clearly and concisely written in good English. Care in this regard ensures wider reading and the saving in space permits the Institute to publish more papers. It is the experience of the Papers and Publications Committee that most papers can he improved by condensation. "Readers" who are asked to recommend acceptance or nonacceptance put particular emphasis on the length of the paper and the elimination of unnecessary or any extraneous material. The terminology and units employed should be those current in the particular field. An examination of Institute publications will afford useful guidance in such matters. Webster&apos;s New International Dictionary, 1935 edition, is the Institute&apos;s authority for spelling and style. Various abbreviations are used habitually; for instance, lb., pound; bbl., barrel or barrels; ft., foot or feet; hr., hour or hours; in., inch or inches; Fig. 1 but Figs. 2 and 3.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE problem of mine pumping is so much affected by local conditions, and those conditions are so liable to changes during the life of a mine, that the best system to use is difficult to determine. The experience of the;, writer has been that, in general, for copper mines, electric pumping is most satisfactory unless the quantity of water to be pumped is great or. the mine does not use electric power for any other purpose. As a rule, however, figuring on the cost of necessary power plant, the total cost of: installation is greater with electric pumps than steam- pumps. As the water is liable to be gritty, outside-packed plunger pumps are to be recommended, and if the water is not acid, or only slightly so, chilled cast-iron plungers pay for their extra cost very quickly in diminished cost of packing. With chilled plungers it is possible to use metallic, packing instead of soft packing, if the water, is not too gritty nor the lift too high. In vertical pumps this packing is satisfactory for lifts up to 400 ft., in the experience of the writer; and may be found satisfactory for higher lifts. For water slightly acid, cement-lined pump bodies have given good satisfaction. For acid. water, both plungers and pump bodies should be made of acid-resisting bronze. For high lifts, especially with gritty water, a satisfactory pump valve is difficult to find. To reduce the unbalanced pressure on the valve at time of opening it is advisable to have narrow seats; this, however, brings high pressure on the seats when the valve is closed. On large valves for lifts of 600 to 1,000 ft. we have used leather, hard rubber, vulcanized fiber, and soft brass; for clear water the latter has given best satisfaction. The difficulties due to grit make it advisable to have large sumps where water can settle, and if possible, to have two of them so that they can be cleaned alternately. At the mines of the Old. Dominion Copper Mining ,& Smelting Co.; Globe, it was found that a small air. ejector discharging into a mine car is a very convenient way to clean mud and sand from a sump. .

This paper is not intended to be a technical discussion of square-set framing as used in mines, but merely a short description of the different kinds of framing that have been used in the Butte mines, and what has been decided upon, after years of practical experience, as being the best, taking into consideration the physical condition of the veins and country rock, and also the supply of timber available for mining purposes. Butte is, essentially, a square-set district. Virginia City, Nev., was the first mining camp to use this method of timbering, and to Philip Deidesheimer, who went to the Ophir mine in 1860, is given the credit of solving the problem of square-set framing, where large bodies of ore were stoped and the timbers were supposed to hold the ground from caving without any filling. That he did his work well is shown by the fact that the main features of his framing are in use to-day. In the Butte mines the conditions are such that this method of timbering is generally used. We do not, of course, depend upon the timbers any more than is necessary. The worked-out stopes are filled with waste rock as close behind the miners as possible and not interfere with mining operations. The waste rock is obtained from development work on the different levels or from the surface. In the earlier days of mining in Butte there were numerous independent companies and naturally there were different ideas as to the best way to frame the square sets, although the general features were the same. Timber was abundant for mining purposes and the common practice was to use sawed lumber, generally 10 by 10 in. or 12 by 12 in. square. Some of the mines used for girts 6 by 10 in. or 8 by 12 in. timber, depending upon whether they used 10-in. square or 12-in. square timber for posts and caps. A summary of recent progress in understanding the main factors affecting the pelletization of fine particles is presented. A scheme for categorizing the mechanisms responsible for pellet growth is out- lined and laboratory methods to both identify the important growth mechanisms and quantify the effects of the major factors influencing the rate of pelletization are described. Next laboratory and mathematical simulations of the commercial process involved in pelletizing iron ore concentrates, are presented. The operational instabilities associated with this pelletization process are described and subjected to a control theory analysis. This analysis, in conjunction with the mathematical models, is used to both explain existing control problems and assess the effectiveness of possible circuit redesigns at producing a more stable and controllable operation. Although much of the discussion is in the context of iron ore pelletizing the approach developed to analyze the agglomeration behavior of these concentrates should apply to most other fine particle systems.
