Camp and sample-site methods useful for determining about 0.5 to 16 ppm of mercury in soils and rocks have been devised to complement the analytical methods already widely used in geochemical prospecting. In the camp-site procedure the sample solution is obtained by digesting the finely powdered sample with hot nine-molar sulfuric acid and bromine, the latter generated in place. The solution is buffered at a pH of 4 and the mercury is extracted into a relatively small volume of an organic solvent. Estimations are made by comparing the color of the mercuric dithizonate extracted from the sample with that extracted from a standard. In the sample-site method the mercury is volatilized as the iodide and the latter is dissolved in a buffer solution from which the mercury dithizonate is extracted as in the camp-site method. The estimation is made by a similar comparison with standards or by comparing the color of the mercuric dithizonate with artificial standards prepared from Orange II, an azo dye. Except for the establishment of standards, the time required by an experienced analyst seldom exceeds 10 min for a camp-site determination and 5 min for a sample-site determination. Camp-site determinations are useful for commodity studies and intensive exploration programs; sample-site determinations are applicable to extensive and reconnaissance-type geochemical prospecting programs. The results obtained on samples taken along traverses above known mercury ore deposits in the California Coast Range and western Nevada demonstrate the usefulness of both methods in geochemical prospecting. The increasing use of the mercury content of soils, rocks, plants, or water in geochemical prospecting emphasizes the need for analytical methods which are sensitive and at the same time require a minimum of readily available equipment. Sensitive methods based on the absorption of ultraviolet light by mercury vapor are common in the literature31 12. Although none of these methods have been used to analyze the large number of samples required in geochemical prospecting, they could be extremely useful except for the expensive instrumentation usually required to make the methods quantitative Also, such methods are perhaps too sensitive for field use, especially around areas of possible contamination. Other methods involve the distillation of mercury from a relatively large sample and subsequent collection of the vapors in nitric acid6. The mercury is then estimated by titration with a suitable reagent such as thiocyanate. These methods are not trace methods because the actual amount of mercury measured is often as great as 50 to 100 milligrams. Also, such methods are unsuitable for geochemical prospecting because of the amount of equipment necessary and the time required. Still other methods involve colorimetry, and the sensitive reaction between dithizone and mercury (11).. is the basis for a number of reports on the determination of mercury in biological materials 5,7. Moreover, by the judicious use of solvent extraction and suitable complexing agents, the dithiaone method can be made almost specific for mercury. Sorting tests on limestone at the Lohjan Kalkkitehdas Oy Ojamo mine, Finland, are described. The tests, conducted to evaluate a Sortex 811MW optical separator, were successful, and upon completion, the sorting machine was put into production. Optical separation characteristics of the limestone, used for cement manufacturing, are described. Problems of winter operation are discussed. Operating costs are given.

Further information on the surface characteristics of the silicate minerals was obtained by experimentally correlating the oxygen-silicon ratio of the silicates with their electrokinetic properties. Specifically, the behavior of the minerals in an electric field was investigated using zero point of charge as a parameter. A modified electrophoresis cell was used for the determination of electrophoretic mobilities. It was shown that there is an increase in the zero point of charge with increasing oxygen-silicon ratio in the silicates. Finally, a chemical interpretation was presented to describe the surface phenomena observed in the experiments. In recent years great interest in surface chemistry has produced a number of methods to study the surfaces of minerals and to observe the phenomena occurring at their interfaces. One such method is discussed in this paper. A rather complete review of the surface characteristics of the oxide minerals has been undertaken by parks,' but, a similar study has not been made for the silicate minerals. Two previous papers by the authors2'3 attempted to remedy this situation. In these papers it was demonstrated that the reaction between the silicate mineral particles and acidic water involves mainly an exchange of metal ions for hydrogen ions on the surface of the solid, leading to an increase in pH of the aqueous phase. Also, the degree of reaction was found to depend on the oxygen-silicon ratio of the silicate structure, being least for the quartz and greatest for the olivines. A hypothesis was then set forth explaining that upon the fracturing of a silicate mineral, the oxygen-metal bond (which is almost entirely ionic in character) will break more easily than the stronger oxygen-silicon bond. This results in the exposure of unsatisfied oxygen sites on one hand and active, exchangeable cations on the other. These active sites on the fractured surfaces are then available for reaction with the hydrogen ions in acidified aqueous solution. Thus, an increase in degree of adsorption of hydrogen ions occurs as the oxygen-silicon ratio increases due to the presence of a larger number of active sites on such minerals. A correlation between oxygen-silicon ratio and electrokinetic properties will be further pursued in this paper from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. Efforts will then be made to present a chemical interpretation of surface phenomena observed in the experiments. It is believed that this study may supply pertinent information on the behavior of silicate minerals in froth flotation systems. ELECTROKINETIC STUDIES Equipment: In a previous paper,2 Deju and Bhappu described a simple method for determing the zero point of charge using a potential across a cata-phoresis cell and observing particle movement by means of a Rayoscope* optical system. This setup is simple in design and operation and extremely reliable. With care, reproducible results within 1.5% accuracy may be obtained. A new setup has been developed, based partly on the design by Zeta-Meter Corp.4 and partly on previous cells used at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines. This new, modified cell is shown in Fig. 1. BECAUSE of the wide use of platinum in industry and research, the physical properties of this metal, including its vapor pressure, have been studied in some detail.' The other members of the palladium-platinum group of metals have not been studied as extensively, and only qualitative information is available on the vapor pressure of palladium. Data given in literature by Vines1 and Brewer2 on the vapor pressure of palladium are based on the qualitative observations by Holborn and Austin3 and Crookes4 on the rate of volatilization of palladium filaments in various atmospheres. The general observation that palladium is the most volatile metal of the palladium-platinum metal group was corroborated by Bell, Love and Normand who studied the separation of isotopes of the platinum-group metals by a mass spectrometric method. We have measured the vapor pressure of palladium using the Knudsen effusion technique. In this work, the effusion vessel was suspended from a quartz-fiber microbalance into an induction furnace, and the amount of vapor effusing from the vessel was determined by direct weighing of the vessel during the measured heating times. This technique has been described in a report from this laboratory." The vapor pressure of palladium was calculated from these measurements using the equation P...... = 17.14 -W- (77m)'u [1] a t where ? is the weight loss in grams of vapor of molecular weight m from a vessel having an orifice of a sq cm, during t sec. The derivation of this equation from kinetic theory has been described in a previous report from this laboratory: as well as in texts discussing the kinetic theory of gases.%" Test Vessel—In the search for a suitable material for the effusion vessel, it was found that tantalum reacted with palladium metal to form intermetallic compounds, and graphite was readily dissolved in palladium metal to form what appeared to be a liquid phase at a temperature several hundred degrees below the melting point of palladium. On cooling, the graphite gathered into spherical balls in the palladium, with crystals extending radially from the center of these balls, some of which were a millimeter or more in diameter. However, palladium metal vapor did not attack the graphite vessel, so graphite could be used where it did not contact condensed palladium. Tungsten did not appear to react with palladium vapor or molten palladium at its melting point, but it was not convenient to use a tungsten-vapor pressure vessel because of the difficulty of fabricating this metal. Since the vapor-pressure range to be studied (10 2 to 10 ' mm) did not appear to extend above the melting point of palladium, a combination of tungsten and graphite served to provide a very satisfactory effusion vessel. The lower half of the graphite vessel was lined with some strips of tungsten foil and the sample of palladium consisting of a coil of sheet was placed in the tungsten liner; in this way, no contamination of the palladium by carbon occurred. Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. • As part of $850,000 granted by the House Appropriations Committee for development of manganese in the U.S., the Bureau of Mines will build a pilot plant at Artillery Peak, Ariz., for development of low grade manganese ores. • The historic Argo tunnel and mill in Idaho Springs, Colo., will reopen shortly for the mining of uranium. The Uranium Co. of America has acquired control of the tunnel and mill and 12 nearby mining properties. J. H. Rodgers and G. C. Ridland will manage the operation. •The opening of a new 4000-ton per day coal mine in Washington Co., Pa., and the reopening of another mine of the same capacity in Fayette Co. has been announced by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. They'll help meet added war demands. •A 7000 bbl per day commercial synthetic liquid fuel plant, making gasoline from natural gas at Brownsville, Texas is being operated by the Carthage Hydro-col Corp., a Texaco subsidiary. The gasoline is produced by the Hydrocol process, chemically similar to the Fischer Tropsch process, but differing mechanically in several ways. To operate the process it has been necessary to build an oxygen plant producing 95 pct pure oxygen in quantities equal to U. S. production of commercial oxygen in 1946. •Over 96 pct of the class of 1950 at Montana School of Mines are now employed,, in industry, and they're scattered from MIT to the island of Cuba., • Cobalt, heretofore almost entirely imported, will soon be produced in Idaho. The Calera Mining Co. is building a 600-ton mill in which a cobalt and copper concentrate will be obtained from Idaho ores. •Plans for mining iron ore on the Conarky Peninsula in French Guinea, (an ECA project) call for equipment purchases as follows: 8 wagon drills, electric shovel for mining, conveyor for the port, 8 trucks, wrecker, 2 tractors, as well as miscellaneous accessories and spare parts. •A low-grade lead-zinc mineralization, located east of any known ore bodies in Utah's East Tintic district, has been located by a 2000-ft wildcat USGS drill hole. * Higher-than-going rates have been authorized by the Munitions Board for its stockpile program, where domestic production of scarce materials is low or uneconomical. Payment in excess of 25 pct over the foreign price is now permitted. •A new self-centering conveyor roll, developed by Carnegie-Illinois Steel, is expected to revolutionize materials handling. It completely eliminates the necessity for sideguides to keep materials on a conveyor. See P. 1028. •Great Britain's socialized coal industry employs twice as many miners, but produces less than half as much coal as America's coal industry. last year, British mines produced 28 million fewer tons of coal than the output of the same ,mines in 1939. Absenteeism amounted to a big 12 pot of working time. • Labor market conditions have tightened on almost a country-wide scale. Only 4 out of 143 major labor market areas have a substantial surplus -- less than half the total for May. Growing scarcities of skilled labor are in evidence.

This paper describes the results of a visit to the Santa Elena Peninsula, Ecuador, in January and February, 1921. On account of the complicated folding and faulting of the rocks and the peculiar occurrence of petroleum, field work was possible on only a few of the many geological problems and the results here published are only a contribution to the solution of the general problem. We know of nothing published on the geology of the district, except one account, in Spanish and German, by Theodor Wolf. The Santa Elena peninsula, the most important headland of the coast of Ecuador, lies two degrees south of the equator. The chief town, Santa Elena, is about 75 miles west of Guayaquil, the main seaport of Ecuador. The nearest developed oil field is the Zorritos of northern Peru, 120 miles south across the Gulf of Guayaquil. If newspaper reports are true, viz. that the Anglo-Ecuadorian Oilfields, Ltd., has recently brought in a 700-bbl. well on the coast of the peninsula near Ancon, the district may become important in the production of petroleum. At the time of our visit, the best way to reach the peninsula was by a steamer of the Pacific Steam Navigation Go., southward from Panama and northward from Guayaquil. About once a week, one of these steamers anchored 1/2 mile off shore near the village of Salinas, an important cable station. An alternative route, in the dry season, is by automobile from Guayaquil. In February, 1921, a railway bed had been graded part way between Guayaquil and Salinas, but this was detcriorating rapidly because of lack of funds to continue construction or to keep in repair that portion already completed.

HUDSON MAXIM, Brooklyn, N. Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,' and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a veritable Sherlock Holmes of science.

Sixteen executives, technicians and operative personnel from the French mining industry, now touring mining operations in the U.S., will wind up their visit to this country at the AIME Annual Meeting. Traveling under ECA auspices, they will be in Denver on Feb. 5, Salt Lake City, Feb. 8 to 13, Bonne Terre on Feb. 16. Four of the group are engaged in bauxite mining, nine in lead and zinc, two in pyrites mining. All are interested in American mining equipment and methods, and hope to contact manufacturers' representatives in the various areas they visit. A $600,000 manganese pilot plant is expected to be put into operation by Sept. 1, by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev. S. R. Zimmerly, chief of the Bureau's metallurgical div. for the region, recently completed the mill design and flow sheet; and the Bureau is awaiting steel priorities before building. Ore from the Artillery Peak area, 60 miles south-west of Kingman, Ariz., will be used in the mill. Construction will be handled by Rex Lloyd of Boulder City.

The Questa mine is located in northern New Mexico on the western flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains about 75 miles north of Santa Fe and ranges in elevation from 6,800 to 10,000 ft. GEOLOGY The rocks of the area are Precambrian metamorphic rocks covered by Tertiary extrusive andesites and rhyolites and intruded by Tertiary granitic rocks. These Tertiary intrusives are localized in an east-west belt about 20 miles long and 2 miles wide, extending from Questa to Red River. The Questa orebody is associated with a north-trending aplite intrusive about 3/4 mile wide and 1 3/4 miles long. In the area of mineralization, the metasomatism of aplite has produced a mottled porphyritic rock. This hybrid rock has caused much of the controversy about the Questa mine intrusive. The orebody is essentially monomineralic and consists of numerous closely spaced molybdenite veins varying in thickness from ' 'paint" to 3 in. and occurring in both the andesites and the intrusive. In the intrusive the veins are often siliceous. Common alteration minerals associated with the molybdenite ore vary with the original composition of the rock. The alteration of the aplite has produced phenocrysts of orthoclase, albite, oligoclase and biotite; veins of quartz, orthoclase, and biotite; and graphic myrmekitic intergrowths of feldspars and quartz. In many places near the contact, the andesite is indistinguishable from the metasomatized aplite. The dominant alteration in andesite, however, is the development of fine-grained biotite with apatite, rutile, and sphene.

The subject of the flow of homogeneous fluids—gases alone or gas-free liquids—through porous media may be considered at the present time to be fairly well completed. That is, analytical, graphical, numerical, or experimental methods are now available for obtaining detailed descriptions of the behavior of such homogeneous fluid systems of any reasonable geometry. Thus, satisfactory empirical techniques are now well established for the determination of the permeability of porous media for homogeneous fluids, the numerical magnitude of this permeability uniquely and completely describing a porous medium as a carrier of a homogeneous fluid. Considering this constant as known, the treatment of a wide variety of specific problems involving either the flow of gases or liquids has been carried through to satisfactory conclusions. Beginning with the simple case of strictly radial two-dimensional flow of a liquid or gas into a well under steady-state conditions, generalizations have been developed to apply for systems where the flow is not strictly radial, due either to a lack of uniformity in the reservoir pressures at points distant from the well or deviations from circularity of the external boundary whereby the fluid is being supplied, and finally, to the lack of complete penetration of the well into the producing strata. Satisfactory descriptions are now available for cases where gravity is acting as the driving agent inducing the flow of liquid into the well, either alone or as a supplement to the effect of pressure. The effect of acid treatment on limestone wells has been given a reasonable interpretation on the basis of the fundamental theory of the flow of homogeneous fluids through sands, as have the important features of the problem of water-coning. Then, too, systems in which the outlet of the fluid from the underground reservoir is of a predominantly multiple character may be now considered as in the domain of

FOR the last 20 years, geophysical methods have been in practical use. The results accumulated during this time have been broad enough to enable us to formulate some general rules for conducting geophysical surveys to the best advantage. It is a well established fact that electrical and magnetic methods have aided the geologist to outline bodies of ore, to differentiate between various types of rocks hidden from view and also to determine the thick-ness of the layer of drift that covers the bedrock. Fundamental require-ments for a successful solution of a geophysical problem is the existence of physical differences between the various formations under investiga-tion. If such conditions exist, our problem becomes a physical, mathe-matical and geological analysis of the effects of these differences upon the structure of an arbitrarily produced, or already existing, field of force. Experience has shown that reliable and consistent results in analyzing such fields of force are obtained only if: (1) the methods and apparatus used are scientifically sound and designed to provide information with a maximum amount of accuracy, reliability, sensitivity, simplicity and speed of operation, and (2) the interpretation of the results of such an investigation is guided not only by rigid mathematical rules but also by common sense, based upon sound geological knowledge and imagination. Today, a number of methods are based upon sound principles, are highly sensitive and are well suited for field work. The instrumental developments have resulted in self-contained instruments, which permit the determination of field ratios and intensities with great accuracy. Magnetic surveys have almost become standardized. The electrical methods, mostly based on the determination of potential-drop ratios, or electromagnetic field ratios, are built as bridge circuits and it is easy to determine amplitude, as well as phase relationship of the various electrical and electromagnetic fields.

With the advent of water-flooding into active commercial usage in half a dozen areas in the Mid-Continent, the process passes the experimental stage and joins other methods and processes now in use which have been found suitable in one oil field or another in securing a more profitable production than has existed heretofore. The use of the air-gas lift, acidization, pressure maintenance and repressuring have presented their problems in economics and engineering during their introduction and extended application. When a new field is discovered or attention is turned to an old producing area in which these methods have not been considered, it is to be expected that these problems again arise. While some information is available as to the results obtained by water-flooding in a few localities in the Mid-Continent, the extrapolation of the sand data on which the results are based, for even generalized use in other areas and fields in the region, is hazardous. It is precarious to assume that the same physical condition will obtain in a sand over more than small, special areas. This paper is concerned with a brief presentation of such data as are available to the authors on existing operations, a survey of the region and extent to which application of the method seems most likely to be made, an estimation of the crude reserve existing for such operations, suggestions as to the importance of core analysis in guarding against uncontrolled floods and its usefulness in predicting ultimate recoveries, and comment on some of the economic phases involved. These subjects, as concerned with water-flooding in the East (notably Bradford, Pennsylvania), have been discussed in detail in the literature and are generally well known. Especially is this true of discussions of the mechanical equipment and various lease layouts and development patterns for water-flooding.
