[The Construction Materials section contains the following Chapters: Aggregates Cement and Cement Raw Materials Crushed Stone Dimension and Cut Stone Lightweight Aggregates Gypsum and Anhydrite Sand and Gravel Insulating Materials-Thermal and Sound Slag Roofing Granules] Mineral aggregates are those natural and manufactured industrial mineral and rock materials that provide bulk and strength in portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete mixes, and plaster or stucco surfaces. They may also provide special characteristics such as thermal and acoustical insulation, weight, surface textures, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. Most aggregates are relatively inexpensive materials, but despite their low unit value, the tonnages consumed each year in the United States and throughout the" world make mineral aggregates by far the leading industrial mineral and rock materials both in terms of volume (tonnage) produced and value consumed. The major use of mineral aggregates is in concrete. The low cost, high bulk aggregates tend to keep concrete construction costs at levels competitive with other building materials. Other major uses of aggregates include highway and railroad base or ballast materials, graded fill, and various industrial uses such as metallurgical and chemical fluxes and raw materials-these latter uses are often considered nonaggregate uses of mineral aggregate materials. The per-ton value of mineral aggregate materials at the production plant in 1980 and 1981 varied from $2 to $5 for most sand and gravel and crushed stone, $3 to $6 for air-cooled slag, $7 to $20 for expanded slag and expanded clay or shale aggregate, to as much as $165 to $320 for expanded perlite or vermiculite. The expanded lightweight aggregates have been dramatically affected by increasing fuel costs. It is ironic that the specialized aggregates used as insulating materials to conserve energy cost so much more to produce due to the high proportion of energy consumed in their production. The first four parts of "Construction Materials" deal with the utilization of four major mineral aggregate types: Crushed Stone, Lightweight Aggregates, Sand and Gravel, and Slag. While the focus will be on the use of these industrial minerals and rocks, there will also be some coverage of sources, mining and production, especially in those cases where they are not discussed in the Commodity section of this book.

The genesis of some orebodies has been explained by the mingling and chemical interaction of water solutions of different compositions and the consequent precipitation of the mineral load of one or both solutions at their confluence. While this process can be proved in the laboratory, rarely can a positive demonstration be found in nature, for the conditions at the time an ore deposit is being worked are usually entircly differcnt from those that existed when the orebody was formed. For this reason, the present deposition of copper carbonate in the southern end of the Briggs mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. near Bisbce, Ariz., is of great interest. The developed orebodies in the Calumet and Arizona mines are roughly confined to two broad parallel zones separated at the north by a wedge of Copper Queen ground and at the south by an undeveloped block of Calumet and Arizona ground about 2000 ft. (610 m.) wide. The more westerly zone includes the Irish Mag, Oliver, P. and D., and Cole mines, none of which has been operated since 1919. Much of the water from this division is carried from the 1400-ft., or bottom, level at the southern end of the Cole mine in a long water drift through the undeveloped block to the 1300-ft. level of the Briggs mine at the southern end of the more easterly zone. Most of this water comes originally from outlying areas in the P. and D. mine, passing through parts of the lower. levels of the Cole mine, which are heavily mineralized with iron and copper sulfides. This sulfide zone has been opened up and slowly oxidizing for years. Originally a pure, potable water, the analyses of which are shown under A- in Tables 1 and 2, on its way through the mineralized area in the Cole mine it gathers copper, calcium, magnesium, iron, and aluminum sulfates, a load of dissolved mineral salts almost four times as great as that which it formerly carried; analyses B

FLOTATION is now commonly practiced in alkaline ore pulps, yet little is known regarding the action of the alkaline solutions on the ore particles beyond the fact that films of oxidized material form. We wish to chronicle our discovery of the presence of soluble reducing agents in alkaline ore pulps of the United Verde, and present some data on lime consumption. During the grinding and flotation of a pyritic ore containing small amounts of ferrous sulfate and other soluble salts, an excess of lime was added to precipitate the salts, and filtered samples of the solution were titrated with standard permanganate solution. Even in pulps of high causticity an appreciable permanganate titration was always obtained, in spite of the fact that the solutions were shown to contain little iron. Investigation of the cause brought about the discovery of several previously unsuspected compounds in flotation pulps made from pyritic ore. Not only the reducing agents present had to be identified, but also the amount of dissolved oxygen, and a survey was finally made of the free oxygen content and reducing agents of the mill pulp in the concentrating mill at Clarkdale. A great many. compounds might form, caused by oxidation of pyrite or other metal sulfides or by reaction between a lime solution and pyrite. The most probable compounds considered were calcium sulfides, polysulfides, thiosulfates, and polythionates. Later it was discovered in the literature that in alkaline pulp polythionates do not exist and if introduced are decomposed into sulfites and thiosulfates.1 Any precipitated sulfur is changed by alkali into thiosulfate and polysulfide. Sulfites and sulfides react to form thiosulfate, so that in the end it is possible to have in an alkaline solution only thiosulfate and an excess either of sulfide or sulfite. Introduction Maximization of profit consistent with environmental protection is the principal goal of new applications development for any conventional or in situ mining technique. Efficient evaluation of all the parameters that contribute to mining costs and production hinges on proper design and evaluation of testing programs and data. The program discussed uses several field and laboratory procedures to estimate ore deposit characteristics and optimize lixiviant compositions. Ore characteristics and lixiviant compositions are then used in a long path leaching test (stream tube test). Stream tube test data are analyzed by mathematical models with computer assistance to predict such wellfield rate parameters as target metal production, lixiviant consumption, and restoration. When these predicted rates are combined with market values for target metals, capital expenditures, prices of lixiviant chemicals, and other economic variables (labor costs, power rates, and licensing fees), an assessment of the relative feasibility of various proposed mining plans is possible. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 illustrates this process. [ ] Field and Laboratory Procedures In general terms, the procedures followed in the evaluation of an in situ leaching application aim at accomplishing: •rapid leaching and maximum recovery of the target metal in a marketable form, •low consumption of lixiviant chemicals, •unquestionably satisfactory restoration of the mined aquifer, and •minimization of capital and operating costs for the above through development of an optimum mine plan. Keeping these goals in mind, the following minimum test program is generally recommended. Geology •Estimate of ore reserves and their variability. •Average disequilibrium value for uranium deposits. •Ore thickness, depth to ore, water level, degree of confinement, and consolidation. •Characterization of quality and quantity of other ore deposit constituents (e.g. sulfide minerals, ion exchange parameters). Hydrology •Single well pump and injectivity test. •Downhole vertical permeability test to compare flow rates of barren and mineralized formations. •Groundwater quality as it may affect licensing, hydro metallurgy, and restoration. Hydrometallurgy • Flask or autoclave tests for optimization of lixiviant parameters and determination of specific reaction rate constants. • Flask or autoclave tests for assessing amenability of lixiviant solutions with ore, consumption of lixiviant, stability of metal in solution contacting ore, and environmentally important species mobilized. • A long-path leach test for modeling the behavior of the lixiviant solution flowing through a long mineralized streamline (stream tube testing). •Metal recovery tests from lixiviant solutions (ion exchange, electrowinning, etc.). •Lixiviant regeneration tests. •Environmental restoration tests.

Fine powders of lead zirconate titanate have been prepared by three different methods such as ball milling, conventional coprecipitation and spray drying. Different powders have also been prepared by changing the process variables in each method. These powders were analysed for particle size chemical composition and reactivity. DTA, TGA and x-ray analysis have been carried out to study the lead zirconate titanate formation with reference to calcination temperatures. The calcined powders were then consolidated by compaction and sintering. An attempt has bean made to explain the consolidation behaviour of these powders on the basis of powder characteristics.

INTRODUCTION Post-Lower Ordovician karstification on a continental scale produced a wide-spread paleoaquifer in the upper portion of the Knox Group of the Southeastern United States. The presence of economic zinc deposits in the Knox of Tennessee is considered to be a con- sequence of this paleoaquifer(1). During The New Jersey Zinc Company's initial exploration of the middle Tennessee region the known artesian nature of modern Knox water and its potentially adverse effect upon mining activities was a matter of concern. This concern intensified as a mining situation appeared imminent and a program of hydrologic investigation was begun in early 1969 and continued through August 1972. The preliminary findings of this work were reported at the AIME World Symposium on Mining and Metallurgy of Lead & Zinc in 1970(2). This paper presents additional data acquired during subsequent stages of the program and relates the hydrologic relationships to the overall geologic framework of the area. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY The Elmwood mine is 85km east of Nashville and 8km southeast of Carthage in Smith County, Tennessee (Figure 1). Its physiographic location is in the Central Basin of Tennessee, a basin resulting from erosional breaching across the Nashville Dome of the Mississippian strata which now form the bordering Highland Rims. Both the Central Basin and Highland Rims are divisions of the Interior Low- lands Province. Outcropping rock units of the Central Basin are predominantly Middle Ordovician limestones with scattered high hilltops capped by Devonian and Mississippian strata. One outlier

(communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Dilworth's formulas and tables are of course correct, and the extinction will occur as calculated, provided the money periodically set aside for sinking-fund be really invested. and the interest compounded as assumed in the calculation. Actually, in almost all cases, such funds are used "in the business," in which case, in addition to the periodical charges for principal of the fund, additional charges must be made at the end of each period to cover the interest and compound interest on previous charges. The periodical charge for sinking-fund thus becomes a varying and continually increasing one until the date of extinction. On many accounts it seems more natural and convenient to make the extinction by a fixed periodical charge under the legal rule for partial payments, namely, that each payment should apply first to the interest due at the date of payment;: and any remainder, after this is satisfied, be deducted from the principal before the interest for the next period is calculated. The paper presents a stability investigation of shaft intersections and pit bottom roadways in the vicinity of upcast and downcast shafts at a colliery in the U.K. Aschemeof instrumentation was aimed at monitoring the strata displacement surrounding the pit bottom roadways and shaft intersections with a view to ascertaining the origin of the strata movement and effectiveness of the control measures. The bore- hole instrumentation results together with a theoretical analysis suggested that the cause of instability could be attributed to the drivage of a roadway within the shaft pillar. A semi-empirical technique was used to calculate the amount of support resistance required to reinforce the pillar to take additional abutment load. A rock bolting system was designed to provide a required increase in thrust capacity of the roadway support. The results indicated that roadway closure was effectively controlled after installation of bolts indicating efficacy of the control measures adopted.

The Anglovaal Group has released details concerning its new processes for recovering platinum group metals, stating that the Group's system, which involves batch processing and precipitation methods for these metals (PGM's), leads to faster recovery times, increased recoveries, and higher purities than the conventional process. Insofar as South Africa's Merensky Reef is concerned, the Anglovaal method of recovering palladium first (as opposed to platinum in the conventional process) enables it to use a much simpler process in the subsequent recovery of platinum and other metals. Because the processes give cleaner separations, the volume of material to be recirculated -and therefore the total volume of material in the recovery circuits- is reduced substantially.

Most previous work on sedimentation of coal 1 and mineral 2-3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer," shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-divi-sion line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions. Procedure: The following procedure was used in many tests. A 1.6-gm sample of dry coal was mixed with 16 ml of distilled water in an ordinary test tube and allowed to stand for three days, with occasional shaking to insure thorough wetting of all particles. The slurry was transferred to a Nessler tube and diluted to 32 ml. The pH regulator and flocculating reagent were added, and the slurry was diluted to reach the uppermost or zero-division line. The tube was immediately stoppered and inverted downward and up again ten times during a period of 35 to 40 sec. The lumaline lamp was turned on during the inversion period. After inversion the tube was quickly returned to the viewer rack. The time elapsed for each 10-division drop of the demarcation line between solid and liquid was recorded by stopwatch until the 80-division line was reached in the zone of compression. Additional readings were taken at 15, 30, and 60 min after settling began. The clarity of the supernatent liquid was observed also. As the settling rate became considerably slower at the 75-division line, it was convenient at this time to start the next test in a separate Nessler tube. This was continued until the suspensions in any number of the 21 tubes were tested. An attempt was made to correlate the experimental results between the Nessler tube and a 1-liter glass cylinder. Table I shows that coal particles settle much faster in the cylinder than in the tube, which has a large wall effect.' The correction factor for the tube impedance is 1.662 2 0.145 at the 40-division line in the hindered settling zone, and 1.614 & 0.139 at the 75-division line in the compression zone. This rough correlation was established by dividing the pulp height of each container into 100 divisions and comparing the settling rates of the two containers at the same divisions. Tests were also performed to determine the accuracy of the viewer. The results, not presented, showed that error was within 10 pct.

PostScript to a paper presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 129 to 154. The writer looked over the quarry with care in the search for fossils, having in mind shells or corals of fairly large size. In the brilliant summer sunshine, none were observed on the glaring white ledges. The impression was gained that none were present and the statement to this effect was made in the edition of this paper published in the Bulletin' of the Institute for February, 1915, p. 136. On closer examination in the laboratory it has been discovered that the limestone itself is made up of minute organisms, which are clearly revealed by microscopic examination of thin sections. The principal component of the rock is a small foraminifer, 0.1 to 0.3 in. (2.5 to 7 mm.), of the genus Orbitoides, presumably an Oligocenic form. Figs. 1 and 2. illustrate it. The accompanying description has been kindly summarized by Marjorie O'Connell, M. A., Curator in Paleontology in Columbia University, who first detected the evidences of organisms in the rock. Orbitoides kempi O'CONNELL N. SP.1 The foraminiferan which makes up the Seboruco limestone is an Orbitoides of a Species new to North America. The only Orbitoides heretofore described from this country is 0. mantelli from the lower Oligocenic of the Gulf States. This form from Cuba, then, so different in all of its characteristics from the 0. mantelli, is of great interest as perhaps forming a basis of correlation over wide areas. The most closely related Species is 0. dispansa Sowerby, which occurs in the Nummulite limestone of the Eocenic of the Bavarian . Alps, in the Priabona beds of the lower Oligocenic of Massano, and elsewhere in Italy, as described by Gümbel.2 The age of the limestone in Cuba would thus Seem to be of upper Eocenic or lower Oligocenic age, probably the latter. The fossil has the form of a sphere Surrounded by a wavy rim of horizontal extent, the whole resembling two flat-brimmed, round-crowned hats placed base to base. The total extent of the Shell ranges up to 7+ mm., while the thickness of the central sphere is 2.5 mm. in one of the largest individuals. Like all of the other Species of Orbitoides, this form begins with a Single layer of chambers which multiply in one plane and assume a circular outline; but it is in the subsequent growth that the distinguishing specific characters appear, for the chambers at the central portion of the shell increase more rapidly than do those near the periphery and in consequence a Swelling is produced which finally gives the Spherical form which is so characteristic. The rim, on the other hand, shows little chamber-increase and remains thin. This is clearly Shown in the sections figured, where the central row of larger chambers forms the equatorial zone. Radiating from this row, in section, there appear, a number of solid cones alternating with broad reticulated ones. The solid cones mark the more dense structure forming the walls surrounding the reticulated or chambered cones. These appear upon the Surface as distinct pits, whereas the solid part appears as raised walls.

In the death of Major A. B. desaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major desaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armidc Longer desaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when he became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. desaulles survives him. In 1876, Major desaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. As a feature of the Pittsburgh meeting in May, 1879, Major and Mrs. desaulles entertained the members of the Institute at dinner at Dunbar on the occasion of the Institute's visit to Dun-bar furnace. In 1883, he took up the formation of the Oliphant Furnace Company in that county, of which he became and remained the head for five years. He was then called to the superintendency of the New Jersey Zinc Company at South Bethlehem, Pa., in which position he remained until his retirement,from active service in 1911, maintaining, however, hi.; keen interest in the metallurgy and smelting of zinc, in collaboration with his son Charles, a member of the Institute and a Director of the American Smelting and Refining Company. From 1888, until his death, he resided in South Bethlehem, a prominent and highly respected citizen of that progressive and stirring community. Major desaulles was a member of the Protestant Espicopal Church, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of the Church of the Nativity at South Bethlehem. He was president of the Men's Club of the Church of the Nativity. His kindly nature led him to take an active interest in the promotion of healthful sports among young men. He was ever active in all things pertaining to the general welfare and uplift of his fellowmen. In his death the profession has lost a distinguished engineer and mctallurgist and our country a patriotic able citi-zen and man of affairs—one greatly beloved by those whom he honored with his friendship, and respected and looked up to by all who were privileged to know him.

The use of petroleum-barren aquifers for underground storage has become extremely important to the natural-gas industry. A critical problem in assessing the feasibility of a specific aquifer for such use is the permeability determination of the caprock over the proposed storage project. The approach used here is to conduct both static and dynamic field tests on the aquifer being analyzed. Valuable information on the possibility of communication between the storage aquifer and any other aquifers above can be obtained by measuring hydrostatic water levels and water analyses. Significant differences in such data give evidence of the lack of communication between the intended storage reservoir and other horizons. The dynamic approach requires that one well be pumped in the storage aquifer, and changes in fluid levels recorded in both the aquifer and its caprock. The interpretation of the data from such pumping tests involves the solution of nonsteady radial flow in an infinite aquifer and the influence on such flow of a leaky caprock. A finite-difference model has been used to investigate this problem, and the transient behavior has been solved numerically with a digital computer. It has been found that the pressure transients in the storage aquifer are not affected significantly by moderate caprock leakage. The pressure behavior of the caprock is a much better indicator of the degree of leakage, and generalized solutions for this behavior are included. Field data are presented to demonstrate both the static and dynamic approach. If is concluded that appropriate investigation of the groundwater hydrology in an aquifer-type gas-storage project can provide much valuable information for determining the effectiveness of the caprock to hold gas. INTRODUCTION Underground storage of natural gas in the United States has been developing at a rapid rate over the past few years. In 1955, the total gas-storage capacity was about 1.6 trillion cu ft; by 1961, this figure was almost 3.2 trillion cu ft, an increase of 100 per cent in six years.' This trend un- doubtedly will continue because the economics favor the development of gas storage, as opposed to the construction of new pipelines, to meet the inherent cyclic demand for fuel in the metropolitan areas of this country.' About 15 per cent of the current underground gas storage has been developed in petroleum-barren aquifers, i.e., geological domes or anticlines in which no commercial quantities of oil or gas had been produced prior to the storage operations. The necessity for using barren aquifers outside many metropolitan areas of this country has been due to the lack of depleted oil or gas fields that were near enough and large enough to meet the demands of such consuming areas. Pipeline companies have developed aquifer storage along their transmission lines to meet the fluctuating needs of their complex systems. Considerable thought has also been given to the problem of storing gas in a structureless aquifer, both in this country' and in the Soviet Union outside the city of Leningrad.'," Conditions such as these have led to the development of aquifer gas-storage projects in many parts of the U. S. Most of these developments have centered in the Mid-Continent area, and the greatest amount of activity has been concentrated in Illinois.6 Thus, the use of petroleum-barren aquifers for gas-storage purposes has become extremely important to the natural-gas industry. There are three basic problems in developing aquifer-type storage: (1) finding an adequate geologic structure, (2) finding a suitable storage reservoir within the structure and (3) determining the tightness of the caprock over the intended storage zone. The first two problems can be solved by applying conventional methods of exploration geology, but once these problems are solved, the question arises as to why no oil or gas is present in an otherwise favorable setting. Two situations are possible: (1) an adequate source bed was never present, or (2) a source bed was present but the petroleum seeped away because of a leaky caprock. Determining the tightness of the caprock is one of the most critical problems in assessing the feasibility of a specific aquifer for storage purposes. In attacking this problem, one usually takes cores of the caprock and subjects them to a rigorous investigation. Such core data are desirable, but they only detail the matrix properties and cannot be expected to reveal the gross characteristics of the caprock. Several gas-storage projects in the U. The stress distribution at the surface of a twisted cylinder is analyzed along the boundary of a slip plane of arbitrary orientation and this analysis is applied to the torsion of cylindrical crystals of magnesium. A criterion for slip is developed and the critical resolved shear stress of magnesium in torsion is found to be 0.038 kg per sq mm. The mechanism of torsional deformation in magnesium and aluminum is described, as well as the relaxation of a twisted crystal at elevated temperatures. THERE has been considerable fundamental study A of the mechanism of slip occurring during deformation in tension and compression but comparatively little attention has been paid to the mechanism of torsional deformation. This paper is concerned with the way in which a single crystal deforms in static torsion and with the phenomenon of untwisting which a twisted crystal undergoes during annealing. Particular attention is paid to the application of the critical resolved shear stress law to torsional deformation. Probably the most likely mode of torsional deformation that can be imagined consists of rotation of one part of the crystal relative to another on the active slip plane. Here the most interesting feature is the slip direction. If a cylindrical single crystal is twisted about its axis and if, to consider the simplest case, the active slip plane is normal to the specimen axis, then the direction of gross slip at any point must always be at right angles to the radius drawn to that point. It follows that the crystallographic direction of slip must be continually changing, in sharp contrast to slip in tension which occurs in a crystallographically constant direction. Extensive investigations of slip in torsion have been made by Gough and his associates.' They made torsional fatigue tests on metal single crystals belonging to a number of different crystal systems and observed, with a microscope, the appearance of slip lines on the surface and of strain markings on the transverse cross section of cylindrical specimens. They concluded that the critical resolved shear stress law was just as valid in torsion as in tension, in the sense that slip occurred on that plane and in that direction in which the resolved shear stress was a maximum. They also established that the operative slip planes and directions were the same as in tension. They did not, however, measure the critical resolved shear stress in torsion nor, in fact, did they establish that a critical value of the resolved shear stress was necessary for the initiation of slip. Their investigations were, moreover, restricted to torsional fatigue tests which necessarily involve small strain amplitudes.
