Interest naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth's surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface. Goose Creek Field The single known instance in which the nature and magnitude of the surface subsidence incident to petroleum withdrawal has been accurately ascertained is that in the Goose Creek oil field of Texas, described by Pratt and Johnson.' There subsidence caused the submergence of a considerable area within the oil field, and, because the title to the naturally submerged lands of Texas rests in the State, it became necessary to determine whether the submergence was due to natural or artificial causes. A detailed study revealed that the sunken area conformed very closely to the limits of the productive oil field and that the cumulative depression over an eight-year period ranged from zero at the margin to 3.25 ft. at the center. Precise knowledge regarding the effect of heat treatment on the properties of steel has made possible the detailed specifications and instructions covering optimum heat-treating temperatures and practices that are in current use. A distinct contrast is presented by the metallurgical treatment of steel adjacent to a fusion weld, as such steel is subjected to each temperature from room temperature to fusion temperature, and cooled at a rate that is not generally controllable but is predetermined by the nature of the assembly to be welded, the kind of welding used, and the surrounding conditions. This is true regardless of the type of fusion welding: oxyacetylene, electric arc, thermit or flash resistance. Therefore it seemed desirable to investigate the effect of this metallurgical treatment on the characteristics of carbon steels commonly used for welding, by a detailed study of metal subjected to each temperature range; i.e., each heat-affected zone. Oxyacetylene welding was chosen for the investigation because of the experimental facility of accurately segregating and studying each temperature zone. The nature of the zones produced by other types of welding is the same. The difference is primarily a matter of dimensions of each of the temperature zones involved. The advantages and disadvantages of the extent of the zone are of prime moment, and are discussed after the presentation of the detailed zone study. PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by M. SOKASKI, M. R. GEER and H. F. YANCEY INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken :he loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War 11 in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-ton-per-hour pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London. In April 1945,2 operation of this pilot plant was observed by one of the authors, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was started by the Bureau of Mines immediately. This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals was made available. Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are so easy to clean they respond well to simpler cleaning systems, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.3 As of the spring of 1967, a total of 31 commercial cy- clone plants had been installed or were under construction in the United States; this does not include eight Dynawhirlpool plants. The capacity of the cyclone plants ranges from 50 to 1300 tons per hour and totals 6600. THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in figure 10-1, the mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vertical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the under- flow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the vortex finder to the overflow chamber.

[THE conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may of be able to adopt the practice of larger mines because of necessary capital expendites for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has n yet been developed. CONVENTIONAL DRILL BIT IN USE That drilling speed increases as the hit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests married out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8-in. show that when bit sizes are reduced from. 1 ½ in. 1 3/8 in., and 1 3/16 in., to 1 3/8 in., 1¼ in., and it' in., respectively, the volume of the hole is15 per cent less and the drilling speed 4q per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to 1.826 in., a difference of 0.251 in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and 14° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr characteristics) by some mines.4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and I4° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as can be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier papers.5,6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert.7 REQUIREMENTS FOR DETACHABLE BIT FOR HOLLINGER Under these circumstances, it was apparent that it would be difficult to introduce a detachable bit that could successfully compete with the conventional bit already in]

In defending the chemical theory of flotation, Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl have criticized1 the views of those who prefer to attribute the effects of certain flotation agents to adsorption. Perhaps with some justification, they describe the latter term as the "haven of refuge of writers lost in a morass of shaky experiment and muddy thinking." We prefer to regard it, however, as a haven of refuge for writers who seek a conventional term to describe the formation of films of flotation reagents on solid surfaces, because in many cases it is not yet possible to specify the forces that hold them there. Originally, as Taggart and his associates state, adsorption connoted a concentration difference and nothing more. In recent years, workers in the field of surface chemistry have tacitly added other meanings, and they now speak of orientated adsorption of unimolecular films on a solid sub-strate, of chemi-adsorption, and of exchange adsorption. Thus the term adsorption may connote simply the Gibbs layer of excess concentration at the surface of a solution, or a unimolecular film at the surface of a solid. Perhaps this has led to the misunderstanding of Taggart, del Giudice and Ziehl concerning the relationship between surface tension and adsorption at solid surfaces. The change in "surface tension" accompanying adsorption at a liquid surface can be used as a measure of the adsorption, and the Gibbs equation as quoted by these authors correlates these two conceptions. But, to correlate two conceptions docs not necessarily imply an attempt to explain either, although sometimes such an "explanation" is carelessly inferred. Use of "surface energy per unit area" instead of the numerically equal but more difficult and less definite conception of "surface tension per unit length " would lessen many of the present difficulties. (Compare with Adam.2) At interfaces involving a solid phase, neither '" surface tension " nor " interfacial tension "can have any meaning, but the conception "interfacial energy per unit area" call be understood by anyone who is familiar with the concept of free energy. A modelfor dilute quasi-regular interstitial solid solutions is proposed in which the solute atoms can occupy both the octahedral and tetrahedral interstices in the bee solvent lattice. The distribution function, according to which the solute atoms are apportioned between the two kinds of sites, is calculated. The partial thermodynamic functions of the solution are calculated from the distribution function. It is shown that such a solution model can explain the deviation from linearity of the Arrhenius plot of the temperature variation of the diffusivity of carbon through a iron. The published difiusivity data is analyzed to obtain numerical values for the distribution function. Finally it is shown from the numerical values of the distribution function that the possibility of dual-site occupancy will have a negligible effect on the solution thermodynamics for this system. DeSPITE the large amount of experimental data available on the thermodynamics and diffusion kinetics of dilute solid solutions of carbon in a iron, many of the elementary properties of these solutions are not understood due to real or apparent discrepancies in the experimental data. Basically there is a lack of agreement between the solubility and diffusion data obtained by anelastic damping techniques and by bulk chemical thermodynamic methods. SPecifically the heat of solution of cementite in ferrite estimated from thermodynamic measurement1, 2 is about twice as high as that determined from anelastic damping measurements.3 Furthermore the diffusion coefficient D of carbon in a iron in the range -40" to about 150°C (covering about ten orders of magnitude) determined from anelastic damping techniques is such that an Arrhenius plot of In D vs 1/T is linear. However in the range of about 300o to 850°C where mass flow measurements of D have been made (covering about four orders of magnitude), although the data merges with the low-temperature data, the Arrhenius plot departs from linearity. The object of this paper is to present a more refined model of dilute ferrite solutions in which the solute atoms can occupy two kinds of interstitial sites. The experimental data is analyzed in the light of this model and it is believed that thereby some of the anomalies can be resolved. snoek4 explained the room-temperature internal-friction peak (usually referred to as the Snoek peak) in iron as the stress-induced ordering of interstitial carbon and nitrogen atoms occupying the octahedral (0, 0, 1/2) interstices in the bee lattice. From the consideration of a hard-sphere lattice model the (0, 1/4, 1/4) tetrahedral interstices are larger than the octahedrons but their symmetry would not produce the strain dipole necessary to give rise to the Snoek peak. Thus the presence of the Snoek peak is direct evidence that the octahedrons are occupied. Since the publication of Snoek's explanation, most workers have assumed that all of the carbon and nitrogen in the a solid solution was located in the octahedral sites. Some 15 years ago, Dr. Adolf Schmidt, director of the Magnetic Observatory in Potsdam, Germany, developed an instrument, which was a modification of Lloyds balance, for the measurement of the vertical component of the earth's magnetism in the field. There was a keen demand for this because (1) it was desirable to have a field instrument that would measure the component of the earth's magnetism which stands in the closest and simplest relation to the configuration of the subterranean magnetic formations-the vertical component; (2) it was desirable to have an instrument that was not only more sensitive but also more reliable than the existing vertical magnetometers (the dip needle, for instance). The application of the magnetometer in oil geology demanded such an instrument, because the magnetic disturbances produced by most types of magnetic formations associated with the occurrence of oil (salt domes, faults, anticlines with crystalline core, etc.) are too small to be detected with the ordinary dip needle. The writer can prove, by some investigations recently made for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, that these instruments may be used also to very great advantage in mining, because they are capable of measuring anomalies which are as great as twice the normal strength of the earth's magnetic field. Even for such anomalies, the field balance is more advantageous than the dip needle. First, the instrument rests on a firm support and can be adjusted in the proper azimuth, which insures measurement of the vertical intensity only, without a part of the horizontal intensity, which is very important for the interpretation. The readings give the vertical intensity in linear terms and not as a function of an angle; and the field balance is insensitive to temperature when used with scale values that are adequate for the determination of large anomalies. In another phase of mining, the gold placer work, the field balance has also shown excellent results for which the dip needle is not adequate. What has been said about the dip needle holds also, though to a lesser extent, for two other types of vertical variometers recently used, the Tiberg balance and the Thomson-Thalen magnetometer.

Introduction and Importance of the Industry Sand, as described in this chapter, is a crude product used for ballast on railroads and highways, and as the fine aggregate in concrete, mortar, plaster and in asphalt paving materials. The sand used in glass, as a molding sand, and as a source of silica is described in Chapter 43. Sand and gravel together constitute the mineral raw materials of largest volume produced from the earth. In 1958, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines,21 680,080,000 tons of sand and gravel (including industrial sand) were produced in the United States. The nearest competitor was crushed rock of which 532,818,000 tons were produced. Coal, both bituminous and anthracite accounted for only 431,616,689 tons in the same year. In dollar value, sand and gravel were exceeded only by cement, crushed rock and fuels. Hence it is a major unit of the mineral-producing industry. As an example, one plant in California operates around the clock at an average rate of 1,500 tons per hour, and at peak intervals has shipped over 4,000 tons per hour, all by trucks. Nevertheless, it is controlled by one man through a panel of push buttons that control the crushing, screening, washing, grading, stock piling, and reclaiming of the products. Because sand and gravel are low-valued commodities, but are used in every construction undertaking in every city, village, farm, dam and highway, they are produced in almost every county in the United States and southern Canada, by thousands of individual operators, very few of whom operate in more than one community. Many operations, particularly those established to supply the needs of major dams that are under construction, or of major segments of new highways, are temporary in nature, and the equipment installed is more or less portable. Because of the bulky nature of sand and gravel, there is very little interstate movement, and almost no exports or imports, except a little movement back and forth across the border of the United States and Canada. First, the material needs definition. Definitions Sand and gravel have been defined as continuously graded unconsolidated materials that appear in the earth's surface as a result of the natural disintegration of rocks. Both normally appear together, but in a wide variety of sizes, types and range of size classification. The American Society for Testing Materials has tentatively revised its definition of "sand" as: granular material passing the 3/8-in. sieve and almost entirely passing the No. 4 (4760-micron) sieve and predominantly retained on the No. 200 (74-micron) sieve, and resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of completely friable sandstone (ASTM Designation C 58-55T). The Society's tentative revision of its definition of "gravel" is: granular material predominantly retained on the No. 4 (4760-micron) sieve and resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of weakly bound conglomerate (ASTM 125-55T). ONE of the fundamental principles of efficiency is the use of adequate and permanent records. The rapid increase in the manufacture and use of recording pryometers is a proof of the appreciation of efficiency principles on the part of the manufacturers engaged in the various technical industries. Where recording pyrometers are not employed in an industry in which temperature measurements are necessary, one will generally find that a printed form is used upon which is written, periodically, the temperatures measured by an indicating instrument. It is no serious condemnation of the workman to state that such records are often "doctored," but it is rather a reflection upon the executive who puts such temptation in the way of a workman. One of the well-known "tricks of the trade" is to "force." a furnace so that it will be at the proper temperature during the periodic trips of the foreman or other official. Indicating instruments and recorders may be used together to great advantage. The recorder furnishes .a printed record and a check upon the operator of the furnace, and a record of value in correlating properties of the finished product with the heat treatment. The indicator should be of assistance to the operator in controlling the furnace or oven. Modern practice requires a temperature-recording instrument that is as simple as possible, rugged, reliable, and sufficiently accurate. Of these qualifications reliability is paramount, particularly in cases where the recorder is used for controlling the temperature automatically. By a reliable instrument is meant one that will run continuously with little attention and with a consistent degree of accuracy. That is, if it is in error by 5 per cent. one day, it must be in error by a like amount on any other clay, and not by 2 per cent. or 10 per cent. The earlier forms of recorders were complex and delicate, or mechanically unsatisfactory and inaccurate, and required considerable attention to keep them in operation. Within the past few years, however, the development in the manufacture of temperature recording devices has been highly satisfactory and many excellent instruments are now available. .

DESPITE the increasing interest in and the technical importance of iron-chromium-manganese alloys, very little published information is available regarding their constitution. F. M. Becket's paper1 in 1930 represents the first correlated effort in the field of these alloys. The paper served particularly to draw attention to the commercial possibilities of iron-rich alloys containing chromium and manganese in balanced proportions. The duplex structure of alloys within the commercial range was briefly discussed, but exposition of their structural constitution was necessarily limited because the physical properties and corrosion resistance of the alloys were the main subjects of the paper. Both prior to and following the publication of F. M. Becket's paper, and at his instigation, an extensive investigation of the constitution of iron-chromium-manganese alloys of commercial purity was in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc. The present paper is based on the results of that investigation. In the last few years, investigations covering various portions of this alloy system have also been made in Europe. W. Koester briefly mentioned the effect of annealing on chromium-manganese steel2 and later3 constructed approximate sections of the iron-chromium-manganese equilibrium diagram. M. Schmidt and H. Legat14 even more recently studied this system, and their article and conclusions are of interest as representing an entirely independent study of a number of iron-chromium-manganese alloys. Koester's sections are shown in Fig. 1. The figures summarize the effect of manganese additions to iron alloys containing 5, 10, 15 and 20 per cent Cr as well as the effect of increasing chromium content on iron alloys containing 3, 8, 20 and 30 per cent Mn. These diagrams, within their composition limits, substantiated in some measure the results of our investigation. However, in our work some differences as regards the position of the mixed alpha-gamma fields were found as compared to Koester's work, and we were able to detect the presence of

ALTHOUGH many structural and kinetic investigations have been made for alloys of iron and nickel, only meager data exist from thermodynamic investigations. The purpose of this note is to estimate the free energy of the Fe-Ni solid solutions from thermodynamic data available for ternary alloys containing iron and nickel. The lack of a description of the thermodynamic behavior for the Fe-Ni system has required the structural and kinetic analyses of the system to assume some form of solution behavior, usually regular, e.g., the mar-tensite transformation analysis of Kaufman and Cohen, 1 consistent with the limited thermodynamic data. Indications that this system could exhibit ideal solution departures might have been suggested by the large deviations from additivity rules observed in the density and lattice-parameter measurements of Jette and Foote2 who interpreted this in terms of possible solute-solvent interactions. Later Turkdogan et al. 3 and more recently Ward and wright 4 found a minimum in the graphite solubility in liquid Fe-Ni solutions near the concentration of FeNi3 with deviations from linearity persisting at all concentrations. This was interpreted by Ward and wright4 to indicate negative heats of solution and was suggestive of short-range ordering. The infinitely dilute activity coefficient of carbon (?oC) was also observed by smith5 to pass through a maximum near the FeNi3 concentration in Fe-Ni solid solutions. Recent investigations of the liquid solutions over the entire concentration range by Zellars et a1.' and Speiser et a1.," using vapor-pressure determinations, revealed both negative departures from Raoult's law and a nonregular solution behavior. The solid alloys have been studied by Oriani 8 and Kubaschew-ski and von Goldbeck6 employing gaseous H2/H2O equilibria with Fe and FeO. Both investigations were in substantial agreement, indicating very small departures from ideality. However, Oriani observed the formation of Fe3O4 (instead of FeO) at XFe= 0.441 which severed the equilibrium and precluded experimental investigation of the nickel-rich alloys. Heat-capacity and heat-content measurements have been evaluated by Montgomery10 and found generally unsatisfactory for gleaning thermodynamic information. This is due to the unknown final states of the alloys caused by the interference of the martensite transformation on cooling iron-rich concentrations and superlattice formation, magnetic transformation, and the varied heat treatments used by investigators of nickel-rich concentrations. As an alternative to the experimental difficulties, indirect estimates of the solid-solution behavior have been made by Fleischer and Elliott11 and Smith et a1.12 From their measurements of the solubility of Fe-Ni alloys in liquid lead, Fleischer and Elliott calculated the nickel activity (aNi) (and integrated for aFe) by assuming: 1) liquid lead has no solubility in solid Fe-Ni alloys, 2) Henry's law is obeyed throughout the liquid lead-rich phase (0— 12 at. pct Nil, and 3) Henry's law constant is independent of relative iron and nickel concentrations. Resume.—The district of Santa Eulalia lies 12 miles to the southeast of the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. The ore deposits occur in a Cretaceous limestone of unknown thickness, overlain by a series of rhyolitic tuffs and flows. The limestone is very gently folded and is cut by several systems of fissures, of which only those with a general north-south strike are pre-mineral and control the deposition. The deposits are of two main types; the earlier silver-bearing iron sulphide type occurs as high-grade tabular bodies resembling veins and as large masses of relatively low-grade ore, The gangue of this type is composed of lime-iron silicates that point toward a close association with an igneous rock mass which has not yet been encountered. In the later silver-lead-zinc type the ore occurs in vertical chimneys and horizontal mantas, principally as oxides, though at a depth of 1,500 ft. some sulphides have been encountered. During oxidation the ore chambers have increased in size owing to the solution of the walls by the sulphuric acid generated in the process, and a substitution has taken place of nearly one-half part by weight of the original constituents of the ore, by newly introduced elements and radicals. Both types are believed to have come from greater depths than those yet reached by mining, and their ultimate source, from a consideration of similar deposits, is believed to be an igneous rock in contact with the limestone at some horizon below. The deposits are believed to have been formed at unusually great depths, as indicated by the proved great vertical range of the silicate minerals coupled with the absence of the igneous rock, and by the practically unchanged character of the silver-lead-zinc ores as far as developed. The volcanic capping is believed to be distinctly later than the economically important ore deposition. SEVERAL investigators have computed stacking-fault concentrations from X-ray diffraction data.'-' The method generally employed relates the line shift to the stacking-fault probability. In this investigation platinum filings of 99.99 pct purity screened to -325 mesh were studied after having been subjected to various annealing treatments. The lines were measured on a General Electric XRD-5 spectrogoniometer using CuK, radiation. The centroid of the broad reflections was determined by the method proposed by pike.' The stacking-fault probability was calculated by the formula given by Warren and warekois,3 with the assumption that all stacking faults were on the (111). Various high-angle reflections were used, but most data collected refer to the shift in the (400) reflections. When the filed platinum powder was annealed at 1200°C for 20 min the stacking fault concentration was too small to be detected. The stacking-fault probability in freshly filed specimens, as determined by the line shift relative to the annealed specimen, was about 0.016, Fig. 1. If the faults would be created only by extended dislocations, the dislocation density in the filed specimen would be about 3X1012 cm-2. The average stacking-fault width of about 21 which was used in this computation, is that given by Thornton and Hirsch.7 The mechanism by which stacking faults are annihilated during annealing is not yet fully understood. The isothermal results obtained do not seem to support the simple hypothesis of a first-order decay. On the other hand, the analysis by Kuhlmann, Masing, and Raffelsieper8 for the loss of dislocations during recovery agrees much better with the experimental data of this investigation. This analysis yields an activation energy of 29 ± 8 kcal per mol for the disappearance of stacking faults in cold-worked platinum during annealing. Even if one takes into account the lack of accuracy inherent in this X-ray method, the activation energy found is substantially less than that of self-diffusion in platinum, i.e., 61.6 kcal per mol.9 The results therefore suggest that processes other than dislocation climb, which involves the activation energy of self-diffusion, are responsible for the loss of stacking faults in platinum during annealing. Conclusive evidence is given showing that the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution follows mainly the over-all equation A similar equation can also be written for the dissolution of silver. Theoretical derivation of the velocity equation for this reaction has been obtained, which describes quantitatively the experimental facts. The equation is as follows: where [CN-] and [O2] = the concentrations (in moles/ml) of cyanide and dissolved oxygen, respectively. DcN- and Do2 = the diffusion coefficients of cyanide and dissolved oxygen; 1.83 x 10-5 and 2.76 x 10-5 cm2 sec-1, respectively. A = the surface area of the metal in contact with the aqueous phase, in cm S = the thickness of the boundary layer; varies between 2 and 9 x 10-3 cm, depending on the speed and method of agitation. Rate being expressed in g. equiv. sec-1. INTRODUCTION During recent years a number of papers have been published on the kinetics of dissolution of gold and silver in cyanide solution.1,6 The authors agree that the rate of dissolution is diffusion-controlled, but disagree regarding the mechanism of the reaction. Some authors'-3 support the Bodlander equations: The apparently conflicting results, when critically reviewed, are concordant and lead to the conclusion that the proper equation for the dissolution reaction should be only Eq. 1. This conclusion is based on the following facts: 1) For every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved one mole O2 was consumed. 2) For every 1 equivalent of metal dissolved, 2 moles of cyanide were consumed.' 3) Hydrogen peroxide is formed during the dissolution of gold or silver, and for every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved, one mole H2O2 was produced.1,2 The fact that Kudryk and Kellogg4 did not detect H2O2 during the dissolution of gold should not throw doubt on the many affirmative reports of other investigators. Lund2 has shown that depending on the crystalline nature of the silver surface, (e.g. method of etching the sample) H2O2 may undergo catalytic decomposition heterogeneously according to: Further Kudryk and Kellogg4 carried out their experiments in the presence of 0.5% KC1 to achieve a greater electrolytic conductivity, and Matsudaira7 has shown that H2O2 is catalytically decomposed (homogeneously) in the presence of C1- ion in alkaline solution. 4) Experiments carried out by Boonstra8 and Lund2 showed that the dissolution of gold and silver respectively in KCN + H2O2 in the absence of oxygen was a slow process. Thus the reaction takes place to a minor extent only. Further kinetic studies showed that: 1) The rate of dissolution depends on the surface area of the metal in contact with the liquid phase, thus indicating that the process of dissolution is a heterogeneous process. 2) The rate of dissolution depends on the speed of stirring,5,6 thus indicating that the process is controlled by a physical phenomenon.

The high-temperature allotropy of some heavy rare-earth metals and their alloying behavior with magnesium in the 0 to 50 at. pct Mg region was studied by thermal, microscopic, and X-ray methods. Examination of a hcc phase retained upon quenching alloys of different magnesium content confirmed the existence of a bcc high-temperature allotrope in pure gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, and lutetium. The lattice constants of the pure metals were determined from a Vegard's Law extrapolation and .found to be 4.05, 4.02, 3.98, 3.96, 3.94, 3.92, and 3.90 + 0.02 A, respectively. In all of the systems studied, the high-temperature bcc phase decomposed eutec-toidally, when slowly cooled, into a hexagonal rare earth-Mg solid solution and a simple-cubic peritec-tic AB-type compound. In 1956, Spedding et al.' observed high-temperature resistivity anomalies in the light rare-earth metals and made several unsuccessful attempts to retain the high-temperature form of these materials at room temperature by quenching the pure metals from temperatures near their melting points. High-temperature X-ray techniques were used by Spedding et a1.' in 1959, to investigate the high-temperature allotropy of the rare-earth metals. This study showed that lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, ytterbium, and possibly gadolinium are bcc at temperatures near their melting points. Discontinuous changes in resistivity at elevated temperatures were also observed for pure gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, and lutetium, thus indicating the possible existence of a high-temperature crystalline transformation in these metals. However, due to experimental difficulties encountered in the high-temperature X-ray analysis of these metals, their allotropic form was not identified. Spedding et a~.~ in 1960 observed that yttrium displayed a continuous solid solubility with lanthanum at elevated temperatures, thus showing the high-temperature structure of yttrium to be the same as that of lanthanum, i.e., bcc. Similarly, the high-temperature alloying behavior of gadolinium with yttrium showed gadolinium to be bcc at elevated temperatures. The bcc nature of the high-temperature form of yttrium was again recognized in 1960 by Eash and carlson4 in their study of the alloying behavior of yttrium with thorium. Gibson and Carlson, in a similar study of the alloying behavior of yttrium with magnesium, found that by quenching Y-Mg alloys from within the 0-solid solution region, Fig. l, they were able to retain the allotropic form of yttrium. It was the present authors' intention to use this method to show the existence of a bcc high-temperature form of the heavy rare-earth metals gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, and lutetium. Simultaneous with the present work, Beaudry and Daane' have shown the bcc nature of the high-temperature form of scandium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. The rare-earth metals used in this study were prepared by the calcium reduction of the fluoride and were further purified by vacuum distillation. The magnesium was obtained from the New England Lime Co. and was also purified by distillation prior to its use in the preparation of the rare earth-Mg alloys. The results of chemical and spec-

MEASURED in terms of ore tonnage, the New Quebec and Labrador iron ore fields promise to rank with the greatest iron ore districts of the world. Over 400 million tons of high-grade ore for direct shipping have been discovered to date. Much greater amounts of lower-grade beneficiating ores are indicated by outcrops. Many hundreds of square miles of iron formation await testing. By 1954 iron ore will begin to move towards American blast furnaces, and shortly thereafter the annual rate of production is expected to reach 10 . million tons. To bring this vast project into being over $200,000,000 will have been spent for exploration and development, mining equipment, hydro plants, townsites, the building and the equipping of . a 360-mile railroad, and the construction of docks and ore-handling facilities. The most important iron ore deposits are located over 300 miles from tide water, see frontispiece and also Fig. 1. The frontispiece shows principal sources of iron ores and manganiferous iron ores for the U. S. and Canadian steel industry, and the major smelting districts are shaded on the map. No navi- gable rivers lead into the interior. When work was . commenced on this project there were no roads, no railroads, no communication ,system, no inhabitants, and no adequate maps either topographical or geological. The geological field season was limited to approximately 100 days per season. The obstacles facing this enterprise were many and varied. Drilling tests with a 11/4-in. diameter roller bit were performed on Berea and Bandera sandstones and Leuders limestone using water and two conventional drilling muds as circulating fluids to evaluate the influence of dynamic filtration on penetration rate. The muds possessed widely differing API fluid-loss properties. Mud filtrate was constrained to flow beneath the bit; no filtrate flowed radially through the borehole wall. Rock pore pressure at three different locations ahead of the bit, cumulative filtrate volume, borehole pressure and bit location were monitored during drilling. The rock samples, cored in three orientations with respect to bedding planes, possessed a wide range of liquid permeabilities. and were drilled at borehole-to-formation pressure differentials of 0, 250, 500 and 1,000 psig. The effect on penetration rate of API fluid loss, borehole pressure and rock permeability was studied. Rock permeability damage and pore pressure gradients beneath the bit were evaluated. The importance of borehole-to-formation pressure differential was illustrated for each drilling fluid and rock permeability combination. Penetration rates decreased with increased borehole pressure and reduced fluid loss. The observed penetration rate reduction due to changing fluid Ioss was attributed to decreased filtrate flow and improved mud cake plastering hy the low fluid-loss mud. The reduction in filtrate flow could not be related to spurt-loss phenomena. Rock permeability influences penetration rate through particle invasion ahead of the hit, which damage leads to high pressure gradients. Penetration rate variance with sample orientation was evident for water-drZled samples but less obvious for mud-drilled rocks. Permeability damage beneath the bit ranged from 1 to 3 cm. Maximum damage occurred in the first 0.1 cm. Pressure gradients varied with API fluid 10.s.s and could be correlated with penetration rate. The pressure gradient was found to influence penetration rare in rocks of all permeabilities tested. INTRODUCTION Early microbit and small-scale drilling experiments proved to be invaluable contributions to understanding the mechanics of drilling at depth. For example, the effect of borehole-to-pore pressure differential on drilling rate was demonstrated conclusively by Murray and Cunningham', Eckel' and others .' However, the effects of various drilling fluid properties on drilling rate, particularly filtration, have not been studied extensively on a laboratory basis. Microbit correlations of penetration rate with different viscosity and API fluid-loss muds led EckelV o conclude that viscosity and density. more than API fluid loss, were the most important fluid properties in controlling drill bit penetration rates. Ferguson and Klotz6 studied filtration beneath the bit and stated that the maximum amount of filtrate which could conceivably flow beneath a drilling bit could be described by a potential function associated with flow from a moving disc source. and be characterized by a depth-of-filtrate invasion. Invasion depth is a function of penetration rate, formation porosity and permeability, flooding efficiency, pressure difference between borehole and formation and borehole radius, assuming that no filtrate flows through the borehole walls. Electric analog and experimental measurements were obtained, assuming no plugging of the formation pores. Theoretically, filtrate invasion was predicted to extend from 1- to 15-hole radii beneath the cutting surface; experimental results indicated that the extent of invasion was only Y2 in. Comparing these data with results of core-plugging experiments by Norwak and Krueger' led Ferguson and Klotz to state that the drilling operation apparently contributes to higher filtration rates than are observed in nondrilling core filtration tests in which the core face is jetted and scraped. Glenn and Slusser: in describing a linear filtering system in which a rotating bit continuously scraped mud cake from the surface but did not penetrate Alundum cores, stated that mud-solids invasion and permeability damage of the cores were most severe in the first 2 to 3 cm. The filtrate flow rate through the core was found to stabilize after sufficient time had elapsed for the formation of an internal mud cake whose effective permeability was estimated to be 50 to 300 times as high as that of bulk filter cake. Krueger and Vogel reported core permeability damage depths up to 12 in. during a 5-day exposure period in which filter cake buildup was prevented. Havenaar pointed out that the discrepancy between reported and calculated values of filtrate volume obtained in the experiments of Ferguson and Klotz was due, among other things, to failure of the reported API fluid loss to truly represent filtration beneath the bit. Williams," Pro-koplz and others"" have shown that dynamic filtration tests (where a flow of fluid parallel to the filter surface continually erodes the deposited filter cake until a dynamic equilibrium between wall-shearing forces and normally directed compaction forces is attained) yield higher filtration rates than do static tests. Season cracking of brass has received wide attention and there is a wealth of technical literature on the subject. Its causes arc fairly well understood and means for its prevention are inexpensive and effective, so that the frequency of failures from this source has diminished of recent years. But its sister phenomenon, the failure of annealed brass by reason of applied tensile stress plus a certain type of corrosion, has received less attention, though it has been responsible for occasional more or less troublesome cases of cracking of brass in service. The work described in the following pages was undertaken about two years ago to determine the relative resistance of various commercial brass mixtures to stress-corrosion cracking, and to learn something of the controlling factors. By stress-corrosion cracking we mean the cracking of brass free from internal stresses by reason of applied tensile stress and simultaneous attack by certain corrosive agents. Rogers,' in discussing a paper by Hatfield and Thirkell, says: " He had also applied a solution of mercuric salt to tensile test pieces of brass whilst they were under stress in the testing machine. At very moderate stresses such test pieces cracked, and very readily broke." Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson2 subjected test pieces to simultaneous corrosion and tensile stress. In order to determine the minimum stress detectable in brass by the mercurous nitrate test, tensile samples were placed under stress and treated with mercurous nitrate solution. They found that brass stressed below a minimum did not crack. Dr. McAdam3 has investigated the effect of corrosion on the fatigue limit of brasses, among other materials. He directed a stream of either fresh or salt water against the specimen while it was undergoing fatigue test. The corrosion-fatigue limits thus determined may be considerably lower than the endurance limit without coincident corrosion. The exact
