INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICAL INFERENCE The intent of the mineral appraiser in collecting samples from a mineral deposit is to arrive at accurate conclusions concerning the size and value of the deposit. In other words, he wants to derive reliable inferences about the total mineral population from the collected sample data, which (he hopes) is representative of the whole. The discussion of sampling theory in Chapter 2 was oriented toward assuring that our sampling techniques and sampling units would indeed be representative of the total mineral population. Chapter 3 described the most common statistical parameters for defining distribution in various populations. Chapter 4 gave some insight into theoretical distributions of random variables and the probabilities associated with them. The intent of this chapter is to derive inferences from the preceding information about the population mean and the population variance. Knowing something about the normal distribution, and assuming our samples represent a roughly normal population, we can make inferences or logical deductions about the estimated interval or the limits of values which can be assigned to a mineral population. ESTIMATION OF POPULATION PARAMETERS In the application of statistics to mineral deposits it is never possible to know the actual values of the parameters or the theoretical distribution of values within the deposit for which our data are samples. Even after the deposit has been mined out it is questionable if the true value of the parameters can be retrieved accurately, due to dilution, mining, and processing losses. Therefore, our problem is to determine what function of our sample values we should use to estimate the unknown parameters of greatest interest to us-namely, the population mean and the population variance of the deposit. In situ mining is a process for recovering uranium from relatively small or low grade ore bodies. The process involves passing a lixiviant and oxidant, typically NH4HC03 and H202, through a uraniumcontaining ore body. As the solution progresses through the ore body, the uranium is oxidized from the plus four to the soluble plus six state. The bicarbonate complexed uranium laden solution is removed from the ore body and the uranium recovered in an above-ground processing plant. During the leach process lixiviant cations may be sorbed on the ore host, if the host contains exchangeable clay minerals. This report examines the implications of this clay interaction on ground-water quality, the various available in situ mining restoration methods, laboratory procedures for simulation and development of those methods, and the results of using the restoration methods in the field. Various restoration methods, including ground-water sweeping, clean water recycle, and chemical restoration are presented and discussed. The use of ore characterization, agitation leach tests, and column tests to study cation sorption and desorption, and thus, to identify and evaluate restoration methods is discussed. Ore characteristics identify the clay type and clay content, which allows the estimation of the magnitude of the cation sorption by that ore. The chemical effects of clay exchange and of chemical restoration can be examined using agitation leach experiments and packed ore column tests which also provide information on the physical effects. The agitation leach test is a relatively rapid means of determining the sorption and desorption characteristics of an ore. Unlike agitation leach tests, column tests can be used to assess the influence of solutions on permeability, on precipitation problems, and on other chemical changes. The effectiveness of using restoration methods, which were developed and tested in the laboratory, are examined by presenting field restoration data from several mining sites.

THE Coal Division of Battelle Memorial Institute, during the course of an investigation conducted for a coal producer, carried out extensive sampling of the fine-coal section of a preparation plant. The information obtained during the testing period was used to evaluate the overall plant operation and provided the basis for. recommended changes in the plant flowsheet. Included in the information were data for the results obtained when using a Bird centrifuge to dewater the particular coal being treated. At the completion of the investigation, the coal producer gave Battelle permission to publish the operating data for the Bird centrifuge in order to make this information available to the coal industry. The authors wish to take this opportunity to express their appreciation to this company and its officials for their willing cooperation in the matter of publication. Description of Preparation Plant: The preparation plant on which the data were obtained is primarily a jig plant. The coal being washed is a low inherent moisture, friable, Pocahontus-type. The washed coal from the jig is dewatered and sized at 1/4 in. by a Parrish-type dewatering and sizing screen. The minus 1/4-in. coal and the underflow water from the shaker screen flow to a sludge tank where, after the coal settles, the coal is conveyed by a flight conveyor into a pump sump. The pump, a 300-gpm sand pump, delivers a mixture of fine coal and water to a Bird centrifuge which produces a dewatered cake and an effluent. At the time when the investigation was made, the centrifuge effluent was returned to the sludge tank and the cake product was mixed with a coarser size of coal prior to loading into railroad cars. The semiclarified water from the sludge tank overflowed into a pump sump from which it was pumped to the jig. As originally designed, the preparation plant was intended to operate with a closed water system but it was found, soon after operations started, that for various reasons this could not be done. In order to provide for removal of excess water from the system and to aid in maintaining the desired minimum percentage of solids in the circulating water, the plant was operated to provide from the sludge tank a continuous overflow of water and fine solids that was sent to waste. The centrifuge feed represents approximately 35 tons per hour of minus 1/4-in. coal in the form of a pulp averaging 38 pct solids. Sampling Procedure: In order to obtain basic data for determining the relationships existing in the fine-coal section of the preparation plant, samples were obtained for: (1) the centrifuge feed, (2) the centrifuge cake, (3) the centrifuge effluent, and (4) the circulating water. The sampling was arranged to start on a Monday, in order to begin operations with a sludge tank full of fresh water, and was continued long enough to allow sufficient time for fine solids to build up within the water system or for a two-day, four-shift operating period. The method of treating hazards wherein value is decreased, is cited by R. D. Parks. Quite properly, the theory of probabilities is made use of when multiple hazards are under consideration. E. F. Fitzhugh, Jr. $ deals with the enhancement phase graphically and uses percentage of expectancy as derived by a study of conditions and the selection of a chance factor. It is believed that both of the authors referred to fully recognize the part which human judgment plays, and as coupled with experience, training, and the application of the theory of probabilities; in that respect the composer of this paper is in accord. Within the past year, the task of arriving at a mathematical method for handling the enhancement phase, and, additionally, coupling the negative and positive phases, was explored. In citing the hazard, or negative phase, reference is made to the text by Parks. Types of Items far Consideration On the hazard, or negative, side some of the common items to be considered are: 1. Subsidence and resulting damage. 2. Flo wage of water above that anticipated. 3. Geological. (a) Decline in quality of probable ore, and/or (b) Decline in quantity of probable ore. 4. Depressed economic conditions. 5. Litigation. Similarly, on the enhancement, or positive, side common items to be considered are: 1. Flo wage of water below that estimated. 2. Geological. (a) Increase in quality of probable ore, and/or (b) Increase in quantity of probable ore. 3. Elevated economic conditions. 4. Litigation. 5. Technological advance in the art. Tn all of the above items no consideration is given to placing a value on, or giving consideration to, possibilities. For example, referring to Table 1, the estimated normal present value (Vp) of a property, exclusive of risk consideration, is taken as $100,000. If subsidence affects the usefulness of the shaft, the present value of the property will decrease to $60,000, and it is judged that there is a 1 in 4 chance that the shaft will be impaired;, consequent.ly, if subsidence took place, the present value would be reduced ($100,000-$60,000) $40,000, but since the chance is 1 in 4, the allowable reduction would be only one-fourth of $40,000, or $10,000, or a discount of 10 pct (hazard factor) of the original value; the related safety factor is taken as unity minus 0.10, or 0.90. Thus, the original Vp, $100,000, multiplied by the safety factor ($100,000 X 0.90) gives $90,000, which is the adjusted present value of the property in this single instance. Additionally, there is a water hazard, which, if encountered, will reduce the present value to $85,000. The chance is 1 in 3. Following through with the same reasoning as shown above, the derived safety factor will be 0.95. To arrive at a single multiplying factor which will express the combined risks, the two safety factors are multiplied together, 0.90 X 0.95 = 0.855. The extraction of iron oxide from several types of siliceous iron ore by digestion in sulfuric acid solutions was investigated in the temperature range from 80 to 258°F at concentrations from 10-60% H2SO4. Degree and rate of extraction were found to be critical with respect to both temperature and acid concentration, requiring temperatures in excess of 250° F and acid concentrations of 50% to effect 80-90% extraction of iron oxide in 60 min. Rate of extraction is directly related to surface area and apparently controlled by the rate of chemical reaction. The activation energy was found to be approximately 25,000 cal per g mol. Extraction characteristics of the several ores were found to be similar. The Department of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin conducts a continuing research program to develop processes for the utilization of low-grade iron ore deposits such as the nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic range. Methods under study include high-intensity magnetic and high-tension electrical concentration, flotation, direct reduction and chemical extraction. Concentration of a number of low-grade siliceous iron ores by the extraction of silica in sodium hydroxide solutions has been reported by the writer and others in the literature.1,2,3,4 Residual concentrates containing as much as 65% iron have been obtained from taconites containing less than 30%. Currently an alternative approach is under study, namely the dissolution of iron oxides from siliceous gangue by extraction in acid, with subsequent recovery of the iron from solution. Such a process for extracting iron oxide from the low-grade oclitic deposits of Alberta with hydrochloric acid was investigated and described by Gravenor, Govett and Rigg.5 The current investigation, which is entirely devoted to extraction with sulfuric acid, is the subject of this paper. In part, the objective of this research was to determine the possibility of leaching iron ores in situ with sulfuric acid. The investigation of a recovery method is left to later research. The ores investigated contained hematite (Fe2O3) as the principal iron-bearing mineral and minor amounts of goethite (Fe2O3 .H2O), magnetite (Fe3O4), and iron-bearing silicates. The gangue was essentially quartz occurring as single crystals and microcrystalline aggregates. Detailed description of the ores may be found in the literature.1,2,4,6 A comparison of the specific ores used in this investigation is shown in the partial analyses of Table I. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS All extractions were made at atmospheric pressure using beakers with a mechanical stirrer for those tests run below the boiling point, and Erlenmeyer flasks for those at the boiling point. A thermostatically controlled hot plate was used for heating, and this maintained the mean temperature within the solution to within ±3°F during extraction. The sample of ore for extraction was weighed to + 0.02 g. For tests below the boiling point, the sample was added to the beaker containing the sulfuric acid solution at the desired temperature. ThE primary slip plane in hcp metal crystals can usually be inferred from the c/a ratio. Basal slip is the primary system at room temperature for zinc, cadmium, magnesium, cobalt, and rhenium, all of which have a c/a ratio greater than 1.60. Zirconium and titanium, on the other hand, each with a c/a ratio of 1.59, deform primarily by (1010) [ll20] prismatic slip. The increasing tendency toward prismatic slip in these materials is generally thought to be associated with the increase in atomic density on (10i0) as c/a is reduced. Beryllium, with a c/a ratio of 1.57, would, according to the above scheme, be expected to exhibit prismatic slip. However, in beryllium of commercial purity, the primary deformation mode at room temperature is basal slip.' The ratio of critical shear stress for prismatic to that for basal slip at room temperature is approximately 5:l. The critical shear stress for prismatic slip decreases quite rapidly with increasing temperature, however, and at 500°C the ratio is approximately unity. The apparently anomalous behavior of beryllium has led to speculation that prismatic slip in this material may be restricted by an anisotropic effect of impurities,' and that, if beryllium could be purified to a sufficient extent, prismatic slip might predominate at room temperature. In such a case, the conditions under which basal cleavage can occur would be suppressed, and enhanced low-temperature ductility might result. With the advent of the floating-zone method for purification of beryllium,3 it has become possible to determine experimentally the effects of purification on basal and prismatic slip. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature on single crystals oriented favorably either for basal or prismatic slip. The crystals had been purified to various extents by zone-refining, employing procedures that have been described elsewhere.4 Relative purities of the crystals were estimated by measuring the ratio of electrical resistance at 4.2"K to that at 298°K. Typical values ranged from 0.40 for commercial-purity material to 7.7 X 10"4 for crystals prepared from vacuum-distilled beryllium and subjected to six zone-refining passes. The purity dependence of the critical shear stresses for basal and prismatic slip is shown in Fig. 1. In the purity range studied, the critical shear stress for basal slip is decreased from 1.4 to 0.14 kg per sq mm. The critical shear stress for prismatic slip is decreased from 6.7 to 5.3 kg per sq mm. The decreases in critical shear stress for each deformation mode, therefore, are approximately equivalent. No purification anisotropy is observed. Because of the absolute magnitudes of the critical stresses, the ratio of the critical shear stress for prismatic slip to that for basal slip actually increases from 5:l to 38:l at the highest purity level studied. It is evident, therefore, that basal slip is the primary deformation mode in high-purity beryllium. This fact must be accounted for in any rationalization of the deformation behavior of hcp metals. The limitations on the problem size to be solved by the program (Appendix II) has been outlined in the paper. I would like to add the following additional limitations of this computer program: The dimensions of the variable J1and J2 should be changed to J, (550) and J2 (550) to handle problems containing more than 400 branches, and up to 550 branches. If there are a large number of branches common to the various meshes, another limitation on the problem size will be the dimension of the variable NA. While a higher-order polynomial fitting for the fan characteristic data points is more rigorous, a quadratic relation, if linear interpolation between the points is inadequate, will result in saving computing time without much loss of accuracy. Of course, this can be handled by minor modifications to the existing polynomial fitting routine in the program. M. J. Even with the best geological maps, there is a constant need for further information and a constant demand for new clues, particularly in exploration work. New ideas and new thoughts are a necessity for progress. In the structural study of an area, be it in Arizona, Africa, or British Columbia, the basic fracture pattern has to be determined first. There is, however, no assurance that the trends shown on the map are really meaningful because they often are secondary in nature, having occurred as a consequence of an intrusion, of doming, or of gravity faulting. Thus, such trends often are a weak basis for assuming the presence of ancient and important zones of fractures that could constitute useful guides to mineral exploration.

A fully-instrumented driving mechanism has been constructed to study the power, aerating and solid suspension characteristics of several laboratory flotation machines. Machines operating over normal flotation speed ranges give substantially constant power numbers in liquid systems indicating that they operate close to fully baffled turbulent flow conditions. Owing to lack of geometrical scaling, power numbers for different sizes of cells of the same make are different. Even larger differences occur between cells of different manufacturers. For a given impeller, varying the tank size did not significantly affect the power consumption. Tank geometry and baffling has a slight effect on power consumption with shrouded impellers. For a given impeller speed, suspension height decreases while power increases with increasing mass of solids in suspension. While power consumption is hardly affected by particle size and clearance between the impeller and tank bottom, the suspension height significantly increases as clearance increases and as particle size decreases. Aeration was found to affect not only power but also the suspension characteristics of the machine. For closely sized particles, drastic sedimentation occurred when a critical value of the air flow number was exceeded. The critical air flow number decreased with increasing particle size. This effect was less marked with a wide particle size range. The self-aerating capacity of flotation machines increases with cell size at a given speed for the same impeller-shroud system, but decreases in the presence of frother and solids. Equations have been established for correlating all of the studied variables. Data taken from the literature were also correlated with these equations. The modern mechanical flotation machine has, over a period of 60 years, displaced other designs to become the dominant type. Once the correct chemical environmental conditions have been established, the major requirement, selective mineral-air adherence, is essentially a function of two operating variables — impeller speed and air rate. The special nature of this dependence is such that in the same apparatus, but under different operating conditions, adherence can be either prevented or destroyed. Another aspect of this observation is that flotation machines though differing in detail to a considerable extent can produce similar metallurgical results. It must be concluded that having determined the correct reagent levels, establishing the correct operating conditions are at least as important as machine design. Since about 1960, after 30 years of fairly stable circumstances, manufacturers have been developing new types of machines whose major feature is emphasis on pulp flow characteristics by virtue of new im-peller-stator designs. As far as can be ascertained, these new designs necessitate radical departures from accepted impeller speed-air rate values. Performance data are still awaited. Flotation machine development has been empirical, as is selection of operating conditions. The purpose of the work at Columbia University has been to elucidate the fundamentals of the subject so that the purely mechanical aspects of the flotation process can be understood in hydrodynamic terms.1-6 Hopefully, this might lead to intelligent selection of a particular machine and its operating conditions for a specific ore based on a minimum of testing, or even to new types of flotation machines. The present investigation is the most comprehensive to date.7,8 Earlier work, which was largely exploratory, has been repeated and extended and employes the most accurate measuring techniques available. Additionally, sufficient hydrodynamic data were obtained under flotation conditions to delineate the relevant operating ranges. Attention has been given to scaling in that several geometrically scaled tanks and impellers have been constructed and tested; it has been pointed out elsewhere that undistorted geometrical scaling rarely pertains in flotation machine design.5 This paper is divided into sections dealing with relevant combinations of the three phases: liquid, air and solid. Summaries of the literature have been given in previous publications2-4 and will not be repeated here. Recently, several reviews of mixing have appeared, which can be usefully referenced.9-11 It is of interest to note that flotation is not included

Studies of reservoir behavior of 12 Smackover limestone oil and condensate pools are presented. Buckner, Midway, McKamie, Magnolia, Mt. Holly, Schuler (Reynolds) and Village are treated in considerable detail and subjected to analysis with an electrical device for analyzing reservoir behavior. Results and comparisons of these analyses are presented. In addition to these reservoir-behavior studies, an attempt is made to assemble trans-missibility and storage data on the Smackover limestone formation from cores and logs taken in dry holes and producers. This together with the behavior of individual reservoirs leads to a better understanding of the formation as a porous aquifer. The ultimate purpose of this type of study is to improve predictions concerning the future behavior of these pools in such a system. Predictions are presented for several pools. This well found oil in the porous, permeable, upper part of the Smackover, thereafter referred to as the Reynolds lime. Since then, six oil pools and six condensate pools have been discovered in the Reynolds lime, and more than 75 dry holes have explored parts of this formation. By the first of 1943, 44 million barrels of oil and 83 billion cubic feet of gas had been withdrawn from the various reservoirs. The original reserves estimated by the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission were 342 million barrels of oil and rzoo billion cubic feet of gas. So far all of the production has been from anticlinal structures, most of which are asymmetric and have their axes roughly perpendicular to the dip of the formation top. This is indicated in Fig. I, which shows the pools, dry holes drilled, and contours on top of the Smackover.' These pools are of particular interest for reservoir-behavior studies because the production and drilling has been controlled, and in most cases the records of reservoir data are complete. In addition to the excellent production and pressure information available, more than one half of the wells drilled were cored and all of them were electrically logged. All of the pools show evidence of water drive. While this paper is in a sense a collection of reservoir-behavior studies for several different pools, there has been an attempt to go one step further and to show the importance of the iormation as a porous continuum or a single aquifer in which the withdrawals of fluids from any pool has an important effect on the behavior of all of the pools. An effort will be made to show that the water drives of these pools are dependent upon a much larger area of the Smackover limestone than that occupied by the petroleum accumulations.

While this paper is in a sense a collection of reservoir-behavior studies for several different pools, there has been an attempt to go one step further and to show the importance of the iormation as a porous continuum or a single aquifer in which the withdrawals of fluids from any pool has an important effect on the behavior of all of the pools. An effort will be made to show that the water drives of these pools are dependent upon a much larger area of the Smackover limestone than that occupied by the petroleum accumulations.

A stability criterion for a lamellar eutectic interface was derived previously1 assuming that the wavelength, A,. of the perturbation which grows most rapidly is much larger than the lamellar spacing. A. This assumption was required to permit averaging of both the interface temperature and composition over the complicated geometry of a lamellae. If this assumption is invalid, as has been suggested.2,3 then the problem becomes too complicated to solve completely. The first of these analyses1 did not calculate the wavelength. A,. of the initially unstable perturbation. whereas the more recent analysis.' which led to a contradiction of this assumption. did not include one of the key factors for determining this wavelength. To rigorously determine the wavelength, the effect of the curvature of the perturbed interface (not considered by either of the above treatments) must be included. By omitting this term, one would be led to an incorrect conclusion regarding the magnitude of A,. but to an accurate criterion for stability as evidenced by the excellent agreement with experimental observations.' In the case of single-phase alloys. the critical wavelength. A,. for instability can be calculated from the Mullins and Sekerka4 (M.S.) analysis which includes the effects of capillarity. In the following discussion, the M.S. analysis is applied to lamellar eutectics and the critical wavelengths calculated for reasonable growth conditions in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys. In order to apply the M.S. analysis to eutectics. one may substitute i) the effective liquidus slope.1 m*. for the single-phase liquidus slope and ii) the ratio of the bulk alloy composition. Measurements of the electromotive force of the cell at 995°C have shown that the cell may be used to detennine the zinc content of molten Cu-Zn alloys to the nearest 0.05 wt pct. The cell is used for brass melts to which no ZnO is added intentionally, because essentially all oxygen in the Cu-Zn-O system is present in the form of ZnO. The cell is also used to detev,nine the thernodynamic activity of zinc for Cu-Zn al1oys of the brass composition range, from which the equilibrium partial pressure of zinc for such alloy may also be calculated. The electrochemical measurement of the concentration of the most active metal in other engneering- alloy systems by a similar technique is also considered. IN recent years there have been many studies concerning the direct electrochemical measurement of oxygen content in molten engineering metals.' These investigations employ galvanic cells in which the electrolytes are various solid mixed-oxides which conduct current by movement of oxide ion vacancies under the influence of an oxygen potential gradient. Similar cells have also been used to measure the thermodynamic properties of mixing of solid alloys,' one component of which has a much greater affinity for oxygen than the other component(s). One alloy system of obvious engineering importance comprised of two metals of greatly differing affinity for oxygen is copper-zinc. At the casting temperature of molten brasses, the zinc concentration is very difficult to control not only because its vapor pressure is very high, but also because of its high affinity for oxygen to form ZnO. Inasmuch as brass castings may be required to have a zinc concentration within very narrow limits, it would be advantageous for the brass industry to have a means for quickly measuring the zinc content in the molten alloy just prior to pouring. A calculation based on earlier thermodynamic studies of oxygen and zinc in dilute solution in binary Cu-O and CU-Z' alloys indicates that the oxygen concentration of molten 70 wt pct Cu-30 wt pct Zn brass must be much less than 1 ppm for the separate phase ZnO not to exist in the ternary Cu-Zn-O system. Thus it can be assumed that all molten brasses, both in the laboratory and in the foundry, are sufficiently saturated with oxygen for the separate phase ZnO to be present. In view of the foregoing reasons, the cell investigated at 995°C for the purpose of measuring the zinc concentration in molten copper-zinc alloys, particularly those of brass compositions. In this cell the left hand electrode is a reference electrode comprised of a mixture of the pure powders of nickel and nickel oxide, to which a platinum contact is made. The electrode of interest is a molten Cu-Zn alloy of unknown zinc concentration with a tantalum wire contact. The electrolyte is the commercially available (Zircoa) calcia stabilized zirconia. The ZnO in the Cu-Zn electrode compartment is not intentionally added, but is naturally present as a result of the infinitesimal amount of oxygen required for its formation in this alloy system. In cell [A] nickel oxide is reduced at the cathode where O= represents the electrolyte. At the anode dissolved zinc of the Cu-Zn alloy is oxidized to form ZnO(s) in its standard state Thus the overall reaction is for which the molar free energy change is where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), is the electromotive force of the cell in volts after correction for the Pt-Ta thermocouple, FOf (ZO) and AFF (NO) are the standard molar free energies of formation of the respective oxides, and a2n is the thermodynamic activity of zinc in the molten Cu-Zn alloy. The reference state of zinc in this case is taken to be the pure liquid. At constant temperature all the terms of Eq. [I] are constant except and azn Thus since all other participants in the electrochemical reaction are in their standard states, the change in the electromotive force of Cell [A] is represented only by a change of the thermodynamic activity of zinc at constant temperature. The zinc concentration is related to the activity by sampling the alloy for chemical analysis after cell measurements are taken. EXPERIMENTAL A typical cell construction is shown in Fig. 1. This and other experimental details were similar to that described earlier with the exception of some minor modifications which are detailed below.

The method of drilling deep wells into the earth for the recovery of oil and gas is beset with many hazards. This is especially true in the Ventura Avenue field, which has the distinction of being the hardest field in California in which to complete a deep well. The hard, shifting and squeezing formations must be penetrated to great depths in the face of tremendous gas pressures. This field presents problems that keep the operators abreast with all of the latest developments in oil-field tools and machinery and in oil-well drilling practices. Equipment must be strong, and adapted to deep-well drilling and the handling of long heavy strings of casing. High-pressure sands require the utrnost care and attention of the operators and no chances can be taken, since a serious blowout may cause the loss of a well that has cost months of labor and expense. Equipment must meet these requirements or be discarded. Although the deepest wells in the world are not in this field, nor hav:. the longest strings of casing been set, nevertheless, the consistency with which deep wells are drilled and long strings of casing are set places the Ventura Avenue field foremost, in this respect, among the oil fields of the world. The V'entura Avenue field dors claim the deepest commercial oil-producing well in the world, in the Shell Co. of California's "Edison" No. 18. This well was drilled 7015 ft. and came in flowing 3280 bhl. of oil per day. This field also claims the deepest average depth of producing wells in that its Ill producing wells average 5676 ft. in depth. Of these 111 producing wells, 50 arc 6000 ft. or deeper, and 16 are 6500 ft. or deeper. Also, of the 111 producing wells 100 arc flowing, and 11 arc pumping wells. This paper is intended to set forth the methods used in the drilling of deep wells with rotary tools and the handling of long heavy strings of casing in the Ventura Avenue field.

THE advent of curved jaw crusher wearing plates made an approach other than segmental layout analysis desirable for prediction of capacities. For some time it had been known that the drawing board capacities of crushers using these plates had to be considerably modified by complicated experience factors to achieve agreement with results. Because these apparent capacities could be readily increased severalfold by minor crushing chamber shape changes, it was necessary that the utmost precaution be taken in predicting capacities of jaw plates modified for nonchoking, special wear characteristics, or any other reason. To this end the laboratory and field tests outlined by the author in a previous paper1 were made on Blake-type jaw crushers. The results of these tests were summarized in a simple first degree equation applicable to crushers using either straight or curved jaw plates. This equation first outlines the maximum capacity potential of a given crusher, then reduces this figure in accordance with installation circumstances by means of a realization factor. It was found subsequently that this equation, with the addition of an eccentric throw factor, is applicable to standard types of single-toggle or overhead eccentric jaw crushers as far as maximum capacity potential is concerned. However, these crushers have realization factor curves somewhat different from those outlined for the Blake type. While this paper is concerned principally with standard type single-toggle crusher capacities, the evaluation of data obtained with these machines is simplified by comparative reduction to the 10 x 7 in. Blake-type equivalents upon which the summary of the preceding paper was made. Convertibility of data from one type of crusher to the other also tends towards confirmation of both. The agreement of these data is sufficient to be considered complimentary. Consequently the feed factors, f, previously reported for Blake crushers are slightly adjusted to an average with the single-toggle crusher results. A nip-angle of 20" has an a value of 1.18, and an angle of 30" has an a value of 0.88, see Fig. 1. r is the realization factor. It is unity for perfectly uniform choke feeding and usually less for actual operating conditions according to the method of feeding used and the probabilities of hang-ups involving the size of feed and crusher opening. Approximate values are given by the curves in Fig. 2. These values are further reduced by intermittent feeding, e is the throw or diameter of gyration of the single-toggle crusher eccentric in inches. As evident in Fig. 1A, variation of feed size will generally have little effect on nip-angle if both jaw plates have flat areas. Jaw plates having continuous curvature, as in Fig. 1B will have different nip-angles, depending upon the size of feed. For test work as described in this paper this effect was accounted. For general compilation of capacities for average feeds it is suggested that the nip-angle be taken at the various settings computed, at an arbitrary level, such as is indicated in Fig. 1C. Data Evaluation To bring the Blake and single-toggle type crusher capacity test results to common terms for evaluation, all data are converted to terms of 10 x 7 in. Blake-type performance at conditions of 100 lb per cu ft, 10 in. chamber width, 250 rpm, 0.65 in. stroke, 3-in. openside setting, and 18° nip-angle. (The nip-angle of the 10x7 in. Blake is 18° at 3-in. setting.) The single-toggle crusher performances are also divided by the eccentric throw to bring this effect to unity. As outlined,' laboratory and field tests made on Blake-type crushers ranging from 10 x 7 in. to 60 x 48 in. were summarized along the foregoing conditions of speed, stroke, etc. This resulted in groups of data which correspond to feeds with fines, feeds

CONSTRUCTION of a ground-water supply includes many operations, which do not end with completion of facilities. Evaluations must be made of the quality of water in various areas and the history of production. Following an analysis of geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data there must be an exploratory drilling program and a study of resulting information. When the well is completed a continuous survey of operating records and basic data is necessary, since designs for future wells are varied as more data becomes available for those already completed. As the following discussion must be limited to a single undertaking, the customary procedure will be outlined for development and construction of a ground-water supply in which more than three wells are involved. Parts of this procedure are applicable for all ground-water supplies. Three possible sites were selected for construction of a paper mill. The problem was that the industry daily required approximately 15 million gallons of water of the best quality available; however, if water of the best quality were not available in the desired amount, water of a poorer quality could be used up to half the required amount, about 7 million gallons. In the preliminary survey approximately 1500 to 2000 square miles were covered for each site. Collected data consisted of several hundred electric logs of oil and gas wells; reports by the U. S. Geological Survey on ground-water resources of localities in and near the area; unpublished records of several hundred water wells including chemical analyses of the water produced and drillers' logs of the wells; records of periodic water-level measurements made in observation wells by the USGS; topographic maps drawn up by USGS and by army engineers; and highway and county road maps. A preliminary report based on study and evaluation of these data was presented to the client, recommending the site with the most favorable and economical ground-water conditions. The study indicated that water of the quality and quantity desired could be developed. In this particular area there were indications that the aquifer could be separated into two zones con- taining water of different chemical character. This chemical character varied somewhat with area, but principally with depth, a factor which later proved an economic advantage in design of the well field. After studying the preliminary report, the client weighed other economic factors as well as ground-water advantages and selected a plant site. Authority was given to proceed with detailed study of the chosen area. Evaluation of preliminary data concerning the area indicated that it should be supplemented with additional information derived from actual exploratory drilling and testing. A flexible plan of exploratory drilling was devised so that data obtained as each test hole was drilled could be correlated with existing data and additional test holes could be located and drilled accordingly. Specific data to be obtained from each test hole were: samples of all formations penetrated; the driller's descriptive log of formations; electric logging surveys; one or more samples of water from selected water-bearing formations; temperature; and water levels and their recovery after periods of production. The area studied in such detail was approximately 400 square miles. Choice of location for the original test holes was based on the preliminary study. The pattern for these test holes was designed to require a minimum number of holes and to allow for interpolation of data between two, three, and four holes. Geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data gathered after completion of the first four test holes showed that the north section was the most desirable in the area, which was then reduced from the original 400 square miles to about 150 square miles for more detailed and intensive study. On the basis of findings from the current test a tentative well field was laid out and a drilling program devised. One test hole was located on the actual plant site and later developed into a small pilot production well equipped with a deep well turbine pump. Water from this well was used for general construction requirements. Another test hole drilled near the pilot production well and adjacent to the proposed route of the well-collection system was used during the pumping test of the pilot production well to determine the degree of interference. From the data thus obtained, calculations were made to determine the coefficients of transmissibility and storage. Three additional holes

The deformation mechanisms operating in Ti-5Al-2.5Sn at 20°K under uniaxial and biaxial stress fields were determined by using both optical and electron microscopy. In the uniaxially stressed specimens, de-fu~rnation twins were found only in the immediate vicinity of the fracture. Twinning was, however, established as a deformation mechanism under biaxial stress conditions. The same slip systems were opera-tiz,e under both uniaxial and biaxial stress. Prismatic slip was identified as the major slip syslem; however, basal and first-order pyramidal slip also occurred, but to a lesser degree. The interaction of moving dis-locations on intersecting slip planes resulted in the formation of jogs and dipoles. Hexagonal dislocation networks were formed only under biaxial stress conditions. A discussion is given on the formation of hexagonal dislocation networks. IT has been shown that titanium alloys can exhibit unusually high strengths when tested in a biaxial stress field.'-" The high biaxial strengths are a consequence of a strong basal plane sheet texture which results in distinctly anisotropic flow properties. This texture strengthening appears to decrease with decreasing temperature2 and would seem to indicate a change in deformation modes. For example, in a uniaxial tensile test, Ti-5A1-2.5Sn yields isotropically at 20°K but is strongly anisotropic at room temperature. The increase in biaxial ultimate over uniaxial strength at 20°K is also much less than at room temperature. It is known that titanium car] form deformation twins more readily at cryogenic temperatures than at room temperature.4 Since the formation of deformation twins will reduce the degree of basal texture in sheet material,' an accompanying decrease in texture strengthening would be expected. To investigate more fully the nature of texture strengthening at cryogenic temperatures, the deformation modes of Ti-5A1-2.5Sn tested in uniaxial and 1:1 biaxial tension at 20°K were studied by optical and electron transmission microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uniaxial and biaxial stress test specimens were prepared from 0.020-in. thick sheets of Ti-5A1-2.5Sn ELI having the composition shown in Table I. Uniaxial stress conditions were obtained by using flat tensile specimens machined from the sheet material. The longitudinal axis of the tensile specimens was aligned perpendicular to the rolling direction of the sheet. Tile biaxial test specimens were prepared by rolling precut, 19-in.-lengths of sheet into 4-in.-diam cyl- inders. Following longitudinal butt welding, the cylinders were stress relieved at 1000°F for 4 hr. A 9-in. sq "window" was then chemically milled into each cylinder's surface reducing the wall thickness in the milled area to approximately 0.006 in. The testing procedure consisted of pressurizing the cylinders while simultaneously applying a tensile load. Using this technique, a 1:l axial to hoop stress was obtained. Complete details of the specimen and testing procedures are given in Refs. 1 and 2. The biaxial and uniaxial stress specimens were all tested in liquid hydrogen. Specimens for electron transmission microscopy were prepared by first chemically milling to a thickness of about 0.001 in. followed by electrolytic polishing to electron transmission thickness. The Rocky Mountain region is defined with some variations for different purposes or by different organizations. For oil and gas development, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and Utah are included in the order of their apparent importance. Portions of adjoining states, such as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, arc attributary to this region, but have little or no oil or gas production. Nebraska and New Mexico are considered separately (see pp. 412 and 415), and most of the discussion in this report will be confined to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Utah has produced about 200,000 bbl. of oil from the San Juan and Virgin fields, which are isolated and shut in at present. The Clay Basin field in northeastern Utah produces natural gas and distillate, and the Farnham field in central Utah produces carbon dioxide gas. Other Utah areas of some interest are listed in Table I. The Cedar Creek (Baker-Glendive) field in southeastern Montana extends into North Dakota, but is listed under Montana. The other states are in the main wildcat areas, and exploration in 1944 was at a minimum. However, geological and geophysical parties are reviewing them for further testing. Oil production in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming was 459,000 bbl. more than in 1943. Increases of 713,000 bbl. in Colarado and 731,000 bbl. in Montana offset a loss of 985,000 bbl. in Wyoming. This was the first decline in Wyoming since 1938. Field production figures and state totals are given in Table I. Total drilling activities in these three states and Utah increased from 687 wells making 1,442,511 ft. of hole in 1943 to 916 wells making 2,245,803 it. in 1944. Wildcat drilling increased from 163 wells making 331,193 ft. of hole in 1943 to 171 wells making 389,144 it. in 1944. These figures include all drilling wells making footage, not starts or completions, and represent an all-time high in drilling. The year 1944 witnessed the greatest concentration of seismograph activity that the region has had. The Rocky Mountain Oil Scouts Association reported that in 1943, the previous peak year, 91 crew months of work were performed; in 1944, the time was 254 crew months. About 67 per cent of the work was in Wyoming, 18 per cent in Montana, and 12 per cent in Colorado. Twenty-three blocks totaling 400,000 acres were reported assembled in Colorado, and 161 blocks totaling 4,000,000 acres in Wyoming. Information about other states was not given. Fourteen unit agreements were approved by the Department of the Interior, as compared with 13 in 1943. The 1944 agreements were all in Wyoming.
