After considerable experience in connection with the magnetic iron-ores at the South, especially in the Cranberry district of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, the writer was led into a thorough investigation of the magnetic separation of iron-ores, and, from this investigation, has gradually been developed a separating machine which it is the purpose of this paper to explain. Numerous United States patents have been issued upon machines for magnetic separation. Since the original patents date back to 1849, it is not possible to-day to establish broad claims upon the principles of electro-magnets as applied in such machines. Among these inventions there are certain types of separators which have very marked practical advantages over the others; and these successful machines, while varying radically from each other in their proportions and arrangements, are all based upon a principle originally explained in a patent which was granted in 1870, and which has now expired by limitation. The problem of practically separating iron-ores, as found in the mines, is very different from the separation of a purely magnetic substance from a purely non-magnetic one, since the crystals of magnetite, scattered through the ore-bearing rock, and sometimes collected in masses, are of very different sizes. The average size of the particles may be definitely ascertained for each mine, and the crushing- and screening-machinery may be adapted thereto, but there will still be a large percentage of very fine crystals which, in the crushing for the average, will not be broken apart from the gangue. If these mixed particles are thrown into the heads they carry gangue with them, and if thrown into the tails they occasion a loss of ironore. There are two methods for preventing such loss. IN 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

An isothermal calorimeter suitable for measurements of heats of solution in liquid tin as solvent is described. Measurements of the heats of solution of gold, silver, copper, and a gold-silver alloy are reported. The heat of formation of this gold-silver alloy is also reported. HEATS of solution in liquids can be determined directly, but few such data have been published for metals as solvents. Knowledge of heats of solution is desirable because it contributes to the general understanding of energy relations in metallic solutions. Thermochemical measurements of this type also furnish answers to specific problems: For example, from the heats of solution of an alloy and of a mixture of its constituent elements in a given solvent, the heat of formation of the alloy may be found. Similarly, differences in the energy content of samples of the same metal in two different states, such as the annealed and cold worked states, may be determined. In the work reported here, gold, silver, and an alloy of gold and silver were dissolved in liquid tin at 240°C and gold, silver, and copper were dissolved in tin at 300 °C. The experiments yielded the heats of solution of these metals in tin. The heat of formation of the gold-silver alloy was also determined. The same calorimetric method is being used to measure the energy stored in metals during cold working and preliminary results have been published.' Equipment and Experimental Procedure The isothermal calorimeter used in this work, Fig. 1, consisted of a Dewar flask completely immersed in a constant-temperature salt bath. A long neck provided space for thermocouple leads and a stirrer shaft and permitted the injection of solute samples. The metal bath in the calorimeter flask was stirred at about 100 rpm by a small glass impeller driven by a constant-speed motor. The shaft of the stirrer passed through a Wilson vacuum seal.2 All measurements were made under vacuum in order to eliminate temperature disturbances resulting from gas convection and to prevent the oxidation of tin. The calorimeter flask was joined by an all-glass connecting line to a gas-control system which made possible the use of a protective atmosphere of deoxidized and dried hydrogen. At the operating temperature of the calorimeter tin oxide was not reduced by hydrogen, presumably because the reaction rate was too slow. Part of the closed system was a removable side tube through which the solute sample could be introduced and in which it was held at a temperature of 0°C prior to injection into the metal bath. CONTRARY to what seems to be the general impression, the island of Cyprus was not named for the metal copper, but the reverse was the case. The origin of the name is entirely lost. The ancient city Kition, the birthplace of Zeno, is supposed to be the same as Kittim mentioned in Gen. x, 4; Jeremiah ii, 10 and Ezekiel xxvii, 6, and Josephus states that this name seems to have been applied to the city and also to the island itself. Cyprus is 50 miles off the coast of Asia Minor. The mountains on the mainland are plainly visible across the sea from where I write six miles from the shore of Morphou bay. It is 200 miles from Joppa the port of Jerusalem, and 250 from Port Said. The shape of the island is like a lizard, the tail pointing directly toward the old city of Antioch near the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean. The island was once heavily timbered. Among the great trees the cedars were said to even excel the famous cedars of Lebanon. The Odyssey refers to it as the "sweet smelling island" and makes other references. But the continual wars of every race and age completely stripped it of its timber, and for centuries it has been woefully barren. There are two ranges of mountains. One borders the north coast and runs out in a slim rocky ridge forming the "tail." The other occupies the southwestern part of the island, the highest point being Mt. Troodes 6600 ft. high, sometimes called Mt. Olympus. Whether or not it be the Mt. Olympus, anyway right around there the ancient gods and godesses frequently "started things." These peaks are in plain sight 10 miles south from where I live.

IN, diamond-drill work, a true sample consists of all the material cut by the bit-both core and cuttings. As the recovery of this sample is the object of diamond drilling, the utmost care should be taken to secure it. Speed of drilling and low costs are of little value if an inaccurate sample is obtained. The engineer in charge must study his material and lay out the plan of sampling, and then see that the drill runner follows his instructions; for the runner may be more interested in obtaining a large footage than in developing accurate methods of sampling. The No. 2 unit of the West Mill of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co., which went into commission Apr. 17, 1912, is structurally a twin of the No. 1 unit, which was started Nov. 9, 1909. Up to the point where the ore enters the concentrating-de-partment, it follows precisely the process described by G. Cae-tani in his article entitled, Milling of Lead-Silver Ores,' under the heading, Preparation of the Mill-Ore. The process from this point forward, in the No. 2 section, is outlined on the accompanying flow-sheet. In describing it I shall attempt to analyze the products of each separate process. The constancy of the tonnage and the uniformity of the quality of the feed render this practicable. No. 1.—550 tons of feed, all having passed 30 mm., is washed into two 15-mm. trommels, 4 ft, in diameter, 60 in. long, 17 rev. per min., 1 in. slope, 3/8-in. gauge steel.

THE term "total operation" is meant to include problems that cannot be answered from the standpoint of either the blast furnace or the open hearth separately but must be studied by considering the interrelations of these two processes. There are other ways of expressing this idea, such as reference to the blast furnace and the open hearth as an integrated process or by emphasizing the interrelation and interaction of the two processes. Much progress has been made in metallurgy and other fields by breaking complicated processes and reactions into simpler parts and studying each of these intensively. This intensive study frequently is done under the controlled conditions of the laboratory experiment. The entire process is understood better by this specialized study of each of its parts. This procedure is so satisfactory that an understanding of unit operations is a fundamental requirement of chemical engineering. Much discussion of the open-hearth process is in terms of one heat or one furnace. By this is meant that the conclusions apply to one furnace, wherever it may be. Furnaces seldom occur singly; they are located in groups and these groups are located in steel plants having characteristic blast-furnace equipment. Problems that are affected by the number of furnaces operating, by the number of blast furnaces in the plant and by the fact that the open hearth shop is dependent on the blast-furnace capacity rather than on its own needs for the amount of iron available are among those which, in contrast to "unit operations," we have chosen to call "total operations," Many of these problems, such as charging delays and the general mechanical problem of material handling, are so familiar that merely to define "total operations" brings them to mind. These problems are of such importance that already they have received careful thought and study and probably will merit further study. As will be shown later, these mechanical problems are so intimately related to metallurgical problems of total operations that the effect of certain changes cannot be ascribed with certainty to either a mechanical or a metallurgical cause entirely. Although the problems coming under the general term of "railroading" are included in the problems of total operations, two others are selected for the discussion of this paper. One of these is strictly a problem of composition; the other is strictly a problem of tonnage production. The problem of phosphorus is present whenever basic open-hearth slag is used in the blast-furnace burden. This practice has not secured universal acceptance chiefly because of difference in preference for high-manganese or low-manganese pig iron. INTRODUCTION. THE Park City mining-district is distinctively a camp of few properties, 5,000 acres, or one-third of the entire district, being under the management of but three companies. As a rule, the ore-bodies lie deep, with no outcrop, except where erosion has formed the deeper canyons and gulches. Ontario canyon exposed the famous Ontario ledge, and Woodside gulch showed the first ore of the Silver King Coalition mine. The Quincy ore-bodies were first brought to light in upper Empire canyon, and Thaynes canyon was instrumental in aiding the prospector during the early days of the camp. There are 22 shafts which have reached a depth of at least 500 ft., ten a depth of 1,000 ft., five a depth of 1,300 ft., and two a depth of 2,000 ft. The amount of lateral development has been proportionally extensive, including six long tunnels, four of which are in 3 miles, with a fifth now being driven. The Ontario lower drain-tunnel is now more than 4 miles long. The formations are sedimentary, dipping about 30° NW. and N., and traversed by many fissures, dikes, and faults. The principal ore-bodies are found associated either with the contact of the basal Ontario quartzite and the overlying limes, or on a quartzite stratum within the limes, or in the fissures, or along some of the porphyry dikes. The district covers the intersection of the Uintah and Wasatch ranges, which explains the existence of large folds and faults, and fissures of great length, width, and depth. In a general way, the geology of the district consists of a basal quartzite dome, which has been exposed by erosion at the Ontario property. The Ontario fissure lies entirely within this formation. Members of the Society of Mining Engineers may well regard it as rather unusual that a paper on this subject is being presented by someone whose first taste of mining came at the age of 60 or so - someone who last heard of cathodes and anodes in 1938. On the other hand, the title does refer to the financing of a mine and at least I can claim to have spent all my business life since the war until 1981 in the world of banking, though this inevitably means that I have been used to looking at these and other problems through what you might regard as the wrong end of the telescope. The lending of money, and more particularly the provision of finance for commerce and industry, is the central job of a banker and I have been involved in this in various ways over many years, but regrettably only very marginally in the world of mining. As you will see from what follows, the rather specialised form of finance which RTZ required was, to my regret, not provided by the British banking community since the great majority of the finance came from American banks and, to a lesser extent, from German banks. I am most indebted to Mr. Roy Wright for a great deal of the nuts and bolts in this paper. He was one of the three central figures in the growth and expansion of RTZ during the 1950's and 1960's and was right at the centre of the negotiations with bankers, with governments and with many others. The going, as you will see, was far from easy. The essential basis for the financing of each of the RTZ group's mining projects was a firm long-term sales contract for sufficient of the output of the particular mine to produce the cash flow necessary to service the loans. Wherever possible, loans were raised in the same currency as the sales contracts were made. Each sales contract was designed to give the customer the product he wanted with a long-term assurance of supply and at the same time to give the bankers the protection they required. Thus the marketing concept and the financing concept for a particular mine formed one overall plan, and talks with the customers and the bankers were conducted in parallel until a satisfactory marketing/financial package was agreed in principle. Preliminary talks were begun soon after the discovery of a potentially viable orebody. As confidence about a discovery increased, customers were persuaded to enter into contingent sales contracts before the very detailed and costly business of the economic and technical feasibility study of the mine was launched; such a study might cost 10% or more of the estimated total capital cost. At the same time provisional understandings were reached with the bankers. The contingent sales contracts usually gave a period of grace of eighteen months to two years, during which time the decision whether or not to continue with the mine had to be made. This decision rested mainly on the result of the feasibility study and also on coming to a firm agreement with the bankers. If all went well and the mine went ahead, then the contingent sales contracts became firm, but they fell away if the decision was negative. The Company was fortunate that during the whole period when its major mines were being developed, world trade was increasing rapidly and Japan was becoming a dominant industrial power. The Japanese supported many of the mines, including Hamersley Iron Ore, Lornex Copper, Bougainville Copper to name a few, with the basic long-term sales contracts that enabled their development. The Germans supported Palabora and to a lesser extent Bougainville. The mines were financed as individual projects generally with a loan/equity ratio of about 65/35, without legal recourse to RTZ for the loans. RTZ was, however, responsible for providing any capital overruns required to bring the mines into commercial operations. Nevertheless, the RTZ management regarded itself as morally responsible to the lenders because, Palabora aside, the sales contracts had either a fixed selling price (like Hamersley), an indexed price (like the Elliot Lake Uranium Mines and Mary Kathleen), or a floor price (as in Lornex, Bougainville and Rossing). A ceramic product or processed material is a solid composed of materials which have been subjected to heat above 875°F. The raw materials, which are blended together (or in some cases used singly), are selected and utilized for various reasons such as ease of fabrication, aid to processing, to yield desired properties after processing, lack or controllable degree of toxicity or hazard, availability, cost, and perhaps other considerations. Almost all solid inorganic, some organic, and some liquid and gaseous materials have the potential to be used individually in some ceramic product. There are several fundamental functions to be fulfilled in every ceramic product and a number of secondary functions are desirable in specified products. These functions are generally met by the most widely occurring minerals and rocks of the earth and their debris. This fact characterizes ceramics as a field utilizing the raw materials most available to man. Of course, specified products utilize synthetics, organics, and rare inorganics to produce desired results. Any solid nonmetallic product processed by subjection to temperature above a red heat may be called a ceramic product. Widely used construction materials and units, domestic utensils and units, industrial parts to facilitate manufacture, technical components, and aesthetic creations are very often of a ceramic nature because of the durability, inertness, hardness, ease of fabrication, cost, and availability of the ingredients. Often, organics or metals cannot meet desired specifications for some of these products. The rocks and minerals and mineral debris of the earth are largely siliceous. Oxygen and silicon comprise roughly 75% of the earth's crust with aluminum, iron, calcium, and the alkalies following in abundance. Silica ( SiO, ) and silicates can be melted to form glasses. Alumina (A1,0,), present in a mineral com- pound, gives greater durability, hardness, and strength, but lessens the glass-forming property. Iron, calcium, and the other alkalies flux silica and reduce melting points. Thus, sand, which is generally almost pure SiO,, and clay, which is generally hydrated alumina silicate, are the most widely used of all ceramic raw materials-principally because of the glass-forming propensities of silicates. In ceramic formulations, clay is generally a refractory filler or skeletal material, having in the raw state a plasticity derived from its colloidal grain size and its water-loving nature. On the other hand, silica sand is a glass former or nonplastic filler. Clay and silica sand in pure forms are quite refractory, i.e., not easily melted. Clay, although siliceous, is less of a glass former than pure silica and is more refractory. Natural contaminants, such as iron oxide or limestone, adulterate many clays and some sands. These contaminants act as fluxes and reduce the fusion points of the mineral or blends. Glass is made from silica sand by fluxing the sand with strong bases, usually soda ash and limestone. Red building bricks are hard and durable because the sand and clay have been partially fused with help of natural iron oxide serving as a flux. The iron oxide per- forms a dual function, serving as a pigment as well as a flux. In a blend of clay and sand and iron oxide, the sand is more susceptible to fusion than is the clay. Although silica sand and clay are the most widely used raw materials in most ceramic products, many other minerals, and some non- minerals are utilized in products where these materials can produce or aid in achieving desired results. The discovery of phosphorous is usually credited to the German alchemist Brand, in 1669, and the element was rediscovered the next year by Boyle in England. IT was more than 100 years later, however, before its presence was detected in high-carbon iron produced in early blast furnaces. In 1781 the German chemist Meyer published the results of his investigation on the ?white earth? that he had found in cast iron made from bog ores. This white earth was metallic in appearance, it was extremely brittle, it was readily fusible, and it was not attracted by magnet. Meyer noted that cast iron containing this white earth was more fusible than other cast iron, and he was sure that he had discovered a new metal ? for which he proposed the name Wassereisen, or the Latin term Hydrosiderum. Two years later the distinguished Swedish Chemist Bergmann made the same discovery, finding a ?white calx? in cast iron, which he also mistakenly considered to be a new metal, and for which he proposed the Siderum.

The mapping of slant-hole oil fields is complicated by the fact that relationships between wells are subject to variations in three dimensions and are not readily adaptable to representation on a plane surface. Formalized perspectives usually expand into an undecipherable maze of lines and peg models with the necessary supporting dividers serve only to awe the beholder with their perplexity. The usual compromise arrived at is a plotting of the projection of the courses of all of the wells in the field onto a horizontal plane (Fig. I). These complicated plots, when used in conjunction with the individual vertical projections of the wells, heretofore have been the most practical foundation for the study of general field problems. This method has many shortcomings, however, which arc not found in the recently developed straight-hole equivalent projec-tion method. The new method supplies a series of maps similar to the type now in common use in straight-hole fields. It is remarkably simple to use and supplies a ready check on clearances between wells. Perhaps the method can best be understood if the steps that led to its development are described. Common practice of oil-well surveyors is to supply the owner with a tabling of the survey and a plan view plotted against the true meridian. If a vertical projection is plotted, it is usually plotted separately and shows vertical depths against the projection of the stations along a section line joining the top and bottom of the hole on the plan view. A more practical method would be to plot the section line of the plan parallel to the abscissa of the vertical projection (Fig. 2). If this is done, any line parallel to the "base line1' will pass through the points on each projection that represent a single point in the hole. Another very useful graph, which the well surveyor could provide, would be plotting of vertical depths against measured depths. Fig. 3 illustrates the next step facilitated by this form of plotting. The lines designated "well A" represent the proposed course of a hole to be drilled. Superimposed on the drawing, in its proper relative position, is the plan view and a portion of the vertical projection of a present producer, well B." From an inspection of the plan view we arrive at the correct conclusion that the only indicated possibility of collision is at the point of crossing of the wells on the plan view. Referring to the vertical projection, note that the vertical depths of stations on B, in the vicinity of the crossing, are plotted on the same plane of projection as A. The clearance is the indicated distance between the two vertical sections measured along the parallel to the "base line," which passes through the point of intersection of the plan view. Repeat this process for the other wells crossing the proposed course of A on the plan view and you have a preliminary check of clearance for the proposed course. A digital computer was used to obtain an exact numerical solution for the transient behavior of the insulation and earth adjacent to an isothermal, submerged flat surface for a single set of parametric values. Comparison of the computed results with analytical solutions for limiting conditions revealed that a complete and general solution for all parametric values could be constructed from these limiting solutions. Complete and general solutions for insulated spheres and cylinders can also be constructed from limiting solutions. The procedure is illustrated in part for an insulated spherical tank. The heat flow was found to fall rapidly to a pseudo-steady state; after some time, it then decreased slowly to zero for a flat plate and cylinder, and to a low steady-state rate for a sphere. The accumulative heat flow during the initial falling-rate period may be a significant fraction of the heat flow during the entire first year. INTRODUCTION Underground storage of liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas has received considerable recent attention. The rate of heat flow from the earth to the storage cavity and the resulting temperature field in the earth are important factors in the technical and economic evaluation of such storage facilities. The objective of this paper is to indicate how complete solutions can be developed for the transient flux and temperature field for various geometrical configurations. The representative properties and dimensions, and the resulting parameters utilized in the illustrative results, are indicated in Table 1. The results presented herein are for dry earth. The effect of the latent heat of solidification of water in the soiI will be described in a subsequent paper. The temperature field in the insulation and earth is determined by energy balances, boundary conditions and initial conditions. The physical problem can be described mathematically with virtually no idealizations insofar as physical properties are known. It appears possible to solve the equations by numerical integration on a high-speed digital computer for any geometrical configuration and conditions. For complex situations, however, the computations are expensive and the results are highly specific. Analytical solutions have been developed for a few simple but important geometrical configurations and conditions, including one-dimensional heat transfer from (or to) earth at an initially uniform temperature to (or from) flat plates, spheres and circular cylinders. The solution for an insulated flat plate has also been derived but is in the form of a slowly converging series involving taklated functions. It was planned to use a computing machine to evaluate this series for a number of representative conditions. However, upon examination of the results of preliminary computations it was discovered that a complete, general and accurate solution could be developed by interpolation between several much simpler solutions for limiting conditions. This technique then was used to develop a a complete solution for an insulated sphere. The equations presented herein are derived in Carslaw and Jaegerl and other books on applied mathematics, or they are simple extensions of these previous results. Hence, all derivations are omitted. The National Mine Health and Safety Academy near Beckley, W. Va., is dedicated to reducing accidents and improving health conditions in the mining industry through education and training. Though this basic mission remains unchanged, the Academy now serves a much broader mining community than it did when established in the late 1960s. From its original emphasis on training federal coal, metal, and nonmetal mine safety inspectors, the Academy has expanded its programs to reach mining industry and labor representatives, state agency employees, and university students taking mining-related courses. The Academy's resident programs, short courses, seminars, and continuing education courses cover a wide range of subjects and various experience levels, but all have been developed with one idea in mind - to reduce accidents and health hazards through education and training of the widest possible audience.

SUMMARY THE cost of labor turnover in industry is so large as to justify the adoption of almost any means to bring about its reduction. Intensive study has shown that faulty methods of hiring and discharging men is the most important factor in labor turnover. Complete control over hiring and discharging by the foreman is a relic of outgrown industrial conditions; centralized hiring permits this work to be put on a scientific basis and also does away with many serious evils that cannot otherwise be reached. Centralized hiring does not impair the authority of the foreman; he hires his men from the employment office and discharges them back to it, instead of from and to the street. The employment manager, being a direct representative of the employer, tends to restore the former relation of direct intercourse between employee and employer that was helpful in avoiding friction between them. Being a specialist, he is able to bring special knowledge and skill to bear upon the task of selling employment in his concern to desirable workmen; lie is also able to give the foreign workman the special attention he requires. Employment managers have been used for the past few years by a number of large organizations, a few of which are engaged in the mining and metallurgical industries. They have invariably reduced labor turnover, in some cases to as little as one-tenth of what it had been. So great a reduction is due in part to other changes made in the light of the data made available by scientific study of the labor problem. In my former paper on personnel work1 I advocated the more general use of the employment manager in mining and metallurgical enterprises as a means of reducing labor turnover. The form of organization recommended seems not be to understood by all, and I have requested the privilege of explaining it at greater length, since it is perhaps the most important factor of all in personnel work, and has a vital influence on the cost sheet of every industrial enterprise.
