IN 1947 the steel industry rebounded from its wartime effort and produced a record-breaking peacetime tonnage of steel ingots. During the first six months of the year the industry produced 42,000,000 tons of ingots and expected to produce 85,000,000 tons for the year. With a rated capacity of some 91,000,000 tons, production was at a rate of about 93 per cent of capacity. Credit must be extended to the steel producers who have maintained this steady state of operations while faced with many problems, not the least of which was a continued shortage of satisfactory scrap. Furthermore, the steel industry started a record-breaking peacetime expansion program at a total cost of more than $1,000,000,000. This program will increase the ingot-making capacity of the country by 2,500,000 tons and should be completed in 1948.

The estimated production of petroleum in the Dominion of Canada for 1931 was 1,582,000 bbl., an increase of 60,000 bbl. over 1930. Nearly all of the production came from Alberta, with a small quantity from Ontario, and a very minor amount reported from New Brunswick. At the beginning of 1931 it was hoped, and predicted, that a substantial increase in production would be shown for that year, but such was not the case, since Alberta did not show the anticipated gain. The production from Ontario and New Brunswick has not varied more than a few thousand barrels during the past 10 years and aggregated 124,000 bbl. in 1930, with 126,600 bbl. estimated for 1931. Unless new fields are discovered, production in 1932 will decline, with Ontario and New Brunswick showing little change and Alberta declining appreciably. THE Taka oil field is in the northern part of Titus and Franklin Counties, in north- eastern Texas. The small town of Talco, from which the field derives its name, is on the P. & Mt. P. R. R., about 15 mi. north of Mt. Pleasant, the county seat of Titus County. The oil field extends east and west from the town of Talco, the approximate center. In May, 1924, R. L. Cannon, while doing surface geology for the Humble. Oil & Refining Co., mapped the surface trace of this fault structure as evidenced by Upper Midway faulted down against Lower Midway. In the interval of sixteen years between the original surface work and the recent productive well completion, approximately eight wells were drilled into the Woodbine sand without success. This paper presents results on an extension into the realm of high-carbon steels of some work recently published1 on the effects of time at temperature, quenching temperature and prior structure on the hardenability of one 0.20 and four 0.40 per cent carbon alloy steels. It was shown at that time that unless the conditions of time, temperature and prior structure are substantially the same in performing the hardenability test as in conducting hardening of parts in production, the correlation of hardenability information with the hardness and properties of production parts is often not of satisfactory accuracy. The general effects of these variables on the austenitic grain size, distribution of excess carbides and critical cooling rate have been known for many years and one or more have been investigated by Shepherd,2,3 Davenport and Bain,4 Digges,5,6 Digges and Jordan,' Post and associates8 and Roberts and Mehl,9 to mention only a few. There has been no systematic investigation, however, into the quantitative variations produced on the hardenability of commercial high-carbon steels by changes in these factors of time, temperature and prior structure. Procedure A plain carbon hypereutectoid steel, S.A.E. 52100 and Graph-Mo, a molybdenum-bearing high-carbon steel containing some graphite, were chosen for this investigation. The chemical analyses of these electric-furnace steels are given in Table I. The procedure used was exactly that reported previously,' hence the details will not be repeated here. Normalized (165o°F.) and spheroidized prior structures were utilized on all steels with hot-rolled and quenched (I600°F. oil) prior conditions added for the plain carbon steel. The end-quench test developed by Jominy10 was sclected for use in this investigation and, with the noted exceptions, the American Society for Testing Materials standard procedure was followed. The effect of time at temperature was examined at intervals of o, 10 and 40 min. and 4 hr., and a few 16-hr. tests were run. ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.

LEACHING of mined-out areas at the Arizona property of the Ray Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., was started on Jan. 20, 1.937, and by July 1, 1938, 10,000,000 lb. of copper had been produced by this method. Leaching operations at present are confined to the western portion of the ore body and over an area of approximately ten acres. The ore in this area was extremely high in pyrite and the copper content, which averaged slightly in excess of 1 per cent, was the result of incomplete secondary enrichment by solutions which apparently worked laterally from the main ore body. Above the ore was an unaltered zone of primary or protore averaging 125 ft. in thickness and containing approximately 0.6 per cent copper. Above this was the capping or leached zone averaging 50 ft. thick.

For the year 1934, there were 382 oi1 wells completed for a total initial of 146,965 bbl. Fifty-three wells were deepened for a total increase of 8363 bbl., bringing the total volume of new oil to 155,328 bbl. As of Jan. 1, 1934, the daily potential of the field as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission was 159,740 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2682 bbl. is exempt on account of water. In December, 1934, the daily potential was established by the Railroad Commission as being 297,501 bbl. with a daily allowable of 56,800 bbl. Of this amount 31,993 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2183 bbl. is exempt on account of water. There has been no field-wide test made during the year, and as a result the rated potential of the field is in all probability much higher than the actual potential. As each new well comes in, a five-day test is made under the supervision of the Railroad Commission. The potential thus established is added to the field potential and shares its pro rata part of the market outlet, which is the allowable production, no allowance

IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. THE purpose of the Coal Division&apos;s Committee on Ventilation is to cover one principal aspect of mine ventilation thoroughly each year, instead of attempting to touch upon several different subjects. The Committee for 1943 consists of four members besides the Chairman. Members, selected because of both knowledge of the current topic of mine ventilation, and diversity of occupation, are: Carel Robinson, consulting engineer with an operating background; T. G. Fear, chief engineer for the Hanna Coal Co., an operator of varied experience in mine ventilation; E. H. Denny, chief of the coal mine inspection division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, obviously well qualified; and C. M. Smith, editor of Mechanization with a background of mine ventilation study as a member of the mining department of the University of Illinois, at present retained as a ventilation consultant by the Climax. The early history and progress of anthracite stripping, from the first known operation at Summit Hill in 1821 through 1917, was covered in 1917 in a paper by J. B. Warriner,1 then chief engineer, now president of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co., and stripping methods between 1917 and 1931 were the subject of a paper in 1931 by H. H. Otto,2 of the Hudson Coal Company. . The present paper is confined to methods used today on pitching beds in the western middle and southern anthracite fields. The anthracite industry, not unlike other large industries, had been affected for more than a decade by the adverse economic conditions of the country. High development and operating costs and the competition of other fuels caused some collieries to be closed temporarily, while others were permanently abandoned. In order to obtain a larger tonnage at a lower development cost, a larger stripping program was put into effect by many companies. In 1932, stripping operations accounted for 3½ million tons, or 7 per cent of the total anthracite production of the year, and in the next 10 years this increased until more than double that amount, or over 14 per cent of the total production, was from stripping operations. These figures represent the total production of the entire anthracite region; unfortunately, the figures have not been separated from the different fields. There are some operations in the southern and middle western fields where the tonnage obtained from stripping amounts to more than 30 per cent of the total colliery production. Stripping operations on pitching beds present difficult problems. Owing to the various geological formations, a different situation is encountered in nearly every stripping pit; and because of the proximity of an overlying bed, it is very often necessary to load the entire overburden into trucks and haul it out of the pit to the dump area, although back filling and casting is done whenever possible. Beds in the areas described in this paper pitch from 20" to 90 and some are on the invert in many sharp folds and faults. Planning The more successful strippings have had adequate engineering analysis. Some work is being done without much preliminary planning, but many strippings would have failed completely if close supervision by the engineering department had not been . maintained. The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

Minute of the Board of Directors, Jan. 26, 1917 In the name of all the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, this Board extends to. Mr. Herbert C. Hoover, an honored Vice-President of the Institute, on the occasion of his present temporary return to his native land, the cordial welcome of his colleagues, and their congratulations upon the noble work splendidly done by the Commission for Relief in Belgium of which he is the head. It is understood that a leading purpose of Mr. Hoover&apos;s visit to America at this time is the collection of additional funds, to be administered by his Commission in the care of the destitute children of Belgium. To this enterprise endorsed by both the belligerent parties, as well as inspired by the purest and tenderest sentiments of humanity, contributions are solicited from engineers, especially through an organization known as the "Belgian Kiddies Limited," which this Board, heartily approving its object and method, recommends to the consideration of the members of the Institute. On motion duly seconded it was unanimously VOTED.-That this minute be spread upon the record of the Board, and published in the Bulletin, and that a copy thereof be transmitted to Mr. Hoover, and to the San Francisco Section of the Institute.

LEAD has often been suggested as a protective coating for iron and steel. Such a protective coating should possess: (1) good adhesion, (2) durability, (3) ease of application, (4) freedom from pinholes, (5) good appearance and (6) low cost, but, unfortunately, lead coatings so far produced do not have all of these characteristics. Because of the necessity of carrying out the coating process cheaply, and because lead solutions have poor plating characteristics, most of the efforts have been directed toward the hot-dipping process rather than electroplating. The hot-clipping processes using lead have not been successful chiefly because of the lack of adherence between iron and lead. In any coating process involving iron a bond can be obtained only by the formation of an intermetallic compound, the formation of a solid solution, or mechanical means. Lead forms with iron two immiscible liquid solu-tions, and in the solid state no intermetallic compounds or solutions. It is necessary, therefore, to employ some other element or elements as a binding agent. Tin may be used as in terneplate, or copper in the form of a thin film of electrolytically deposited metal to which the lead will adhere. Because of its physical and chemical properties, lead as a coating medium would undoubtedly be limited in its use to sheet and wire and then only when the article is not subject to abrasion or wear. A very large tonnage of these products are being used under such conditions and a successful lead-coating process should be a valuable contribution to the science. Two other difficulties stand in the way of successful lead coating-that of poor appearance of the weathered surface and the tendency of the lead to form pinholes during solidification. Since lead is commonly accepted as cathodic to iron, these exposed areas are ones of accelerated corrosion.

The demands for increased productivity on the 1967 coal industry have generated new operating trends and fresh approaches to old methods, which have enabled the industry to keep pace with the expanding economy. Changes, while not radical in concept or design, have been plentiful and are marked by the refinement of the already tried, tested and proven. Perhaps not since World War II have there been demands on equipment manufacturers to design and deliver such diversified types of machines as those required by the industry in the past year. Equipment developments-following a plan which calls for higher productivity, lower maintenance costs and greater machine availability- have tended more toward increased horsepower and heavier, more rugged equipment. Electrical and mechanical components, designed in many instances with maximum reliability rather than initial costs as the main criterion, have contributed to the improvements in over-all performance. High-strength, specialty steels are finding use in a wide range of equipment applications. The horsepower capacity of electric motors being installed is more frequently being rated on a continuous basis rather than the former one hr or less and, as a result, fewer failures now occur because of overloading. These developments reflect the pyramiding cost of equipment down-time and represent definitive progress in reducing the magnitude of the problem.

Dr. Babcock—You have l x 10-4 as the component for the lime and 1 or 4x10-. Now, is it by dividing one into the other you get the 400? That is assuming equivalent activity on the part of oxygen, sulphur, and magnesia. Dr. Chipman—Yes, they are calculated for 1600. Now, the first one for CaO was calculated before we had a glimpse of Dr. Rosenqvist&apos;s paper." If you take his calculation you get 14,000 cal which is very good agreement, but our calculation would be superseded by Dr. Rosenqvist&apos;s new data. Dr. Babcock—The state you assume those to be in is the liquid state, as near as you can measure? Dr. Chipman—Naturally it is based on the solid CaS, but if you add the effect of fusion on both sides it just about balances out, so the ratio would be about the same. B. M. Larsen (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. J.)—If we knew the activity of sulphur in the slag instead of merely the percentage, we might be able to find some conflicting factors that balance one another out, and find that the FeO or oxygen pressure effect is really present over the whole range. Dr. Chipman—I am fairly sure we would. The activity of sulphur in the slag and the activity of CaO in the slag, if we just knew those quantities, would enable us to save a lot of this computation and assumption and all the approximations we are doing now. Mr. Larsen—Two other points perhaps should be included: 1—an independent effect of manganese in helping the desulphurization; and 2—the number of mols of constituents or number of mols of ions or whatever there is in the slag could vary with these compositions in such a way that you get dilution effects. Dr. Chipman—You can figure all that in if you want to and it might improve the degree of approximation a little bit. Maybe enough to justify the labor of calculation, inaybe not, but we did not do it. L. S. Darken (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. J.)—The authors have tackled a very complicated problem in trying to tie together in one picture the desulphurizing problem over the wide range of basicity and oxidation level from that of the open hearth to that of the blast furnace. The response of CrzO3 and C~304 to various heat treatments was studied in are-melted iodide chromizim over the temperature range 1000" to 1750°C. These oxides, which are present as impurity phases in this material, were identified by X-ray diffraction teclzniques which were supplemented by optical metallop-aphy. As a function of increasing temperature, Crs04 is first observable in samples annealed at 1300°C and coexists with Cr2O3 (the low-temperature oxide) over a temperature range exceeding 200°C. As the temperature decreases, Cr3O4 dissolves with the concomitant precipttation of Cr2Y2. Both oxides precipitate predominantly at pain boundaries. The reactions which occur are involved with at least ternary equilibria, possibly due to iron which is present as an impurity in arc-melted iodide chromium. HILTY, Forgeng, and Folkman&apos; reported in their investigation of the Fe-Cr-0 system that Cr3O4 (with about 8 pct Fe substituted for chromium) is a primary phase found in alloys with 9 or more pct Cr. They reported that this phase is stable only at high temperatures and that below the liquidus Cr3O4 is disproportionated into Cr2O3 and chromium-rich metal for both Fe-Cr-O alloys and in oxygen saturated pure chromium. Further, they proposed that CrsO4 forms by a peritectic reaction between Cr2O3 and the liquid. On the other hand, Hook, Garrett, and Adair2 found in their investigation of impurity phases formed in "pure" chromium (material consolidated from iodide chromium crystals) that Cr3O4 forms intergranularly and is stable as low as 1500°C which is 375OC below the melting point of chromium. The purpose of the research described herein is to determine the temperature range of stability of Cr3O4, and to show the nature of its decomposition. This further investigation indicates that Cr3O4 undoubtedly occurs in this material as low as 1300°C. The chromium studied was consolidated and fabricated from iodide chromium crystals (ICr-5) and contained Fe r 135 ppm, Si = 20 to 100 ppm, and 0 = 35 to 137 ppm. A complete chemical analysis is given elsewhere.&apos; Annealing was conducted in 1 atm of purified helium and all samples were rapidly cooled (-200°C per sec) by withdrawing them from the furnace hot zone under a high flow rate of helium. The details of the electrolytic-etching technique and electrolytic-digestion techniques for preparation of insoluble residues for X-ray examination are given elsewhere also.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The Starting Material. The as-swaged rod (final swaging done at 900°C) had a wrought grain structure and contained a dispersion of CrzO3 inclusions of maximum particle size of about 2 or 3 p, Fig. 1. Processing kaolin clays from the sedimentary deposits of Georgia and South Carolina is described in this article. While the major processing steps are touched on briefly, emphasis is given to the dewater-ing of the clay-water slurries (slips) formed in the processing of kaolin clays. The dewatering steps discussed include gravity settling, centrifugal dewatering, vacuum filtration and thermal drying. Particular attention is given to vacuum filtration and the variables affecting filtration of these kaolin clays. Kaolin consists essentially of the mineral kaolinite, which is a hydrated aluminum silicate (Al2O3 . 2SiO,). Commercial deposits of kaolin occur in several areas of the U. S., but approximately 90% of the kaolin produced in this country comes from Georgia and South Carolina. These deposits are of sedimentary nature and occur in a geological fall line in the Tuscaloosa formation at elevations between 300 and 450 ft above sea level. Over two million tons of kaolin clays are used by industry in the U. S. each year. A big percentage of this tonnage is used in the paper industry for coatings in making glossy and high quality grades of printing papers. In addition, large tonnages are used as pigments; as fillers for rubber, plastic and fertilizers; and in ceramics. Properties of kaolin that make it widely used in the above applications are its particle size fineness, natural whiteness, chemical stability and non-abrasiveness. In addition to these desirable properties, it is relatively inexpensive. The finer coating grades of clays range in price from $15 to $28 per ton while the coarser filler grades sell within a range of $7 to $13.50 per ton. Pure kaolin particles are small hexagonal flat platelets. Above the 2-p size, the particles usually consist of stacks of plates, while below the 2-p particle size they occur as individual flat, hexagonal plates. Since these individual platelet particles provide the most desirable coating and flow characteristics, major importance is given to particle size fractions of 2 p and smaller. Generally, coating grade clays are those with all particles smaller than 15 p and at least 70% of the particles less than 2p. These coating grades also have 50% or more of the particles smaller than 1 µ in size. The extremely fine grades of coating clay currently being produced approach the range of 100% smaller than 2p. The filler grades of kaolin have 100% of the particles passing 325 mesh but have less than 70% of their particles below the 2-p range. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of the major processing steps involved in preparing kaolin clays for marketing. MINING All kaolin mining is open pit. The ratio of overburden to clay will average 3:1, but this ratio can, of course, be much higher depending upon the grade of the clay and the size of the deposit. Most of the commercially mineable deposits occur from 20 to 120 ft below the ground surface. Both draglines and pans are used in removing the overburden and mining the clay deposit itself.
