Tests demonstrated that aqueous solutions of sodiu~n sulfide would dissolve over 95 pct of the cinnabal- in 5 pct Hg flrotation concentrates and 60 to 90 pct of the cinnabav in low-grade ol-es. Double-leach tests showed that potassiutn sulfide would dissolve 90 pct of the avsenic sulfide in Hg-As satnples and only 1 to 10 pct of the Hg; the sodium sulfide would then dissolve 80 to 90 pct of the rernaining Hg and 30 to 70 pct of the vemaining As. 1 HIS paper describes the extraction, by alkaline sulfide solutions, of mercury from cinnabar-bear ing ores and flotation concentrates. Leaching time and solution temperature had minor effects on mercury extraction when compared to the effects of reagent quantity and ore type and grade. Cinnabar, although readily soluble in sodium sulfide, was only partially soluble in potassium sulfide and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. A double leach process was developed to extract selectively the arsenic from Hg-As products with K2S and to treat the residue with sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions to extract the mercury.' Mercury was then recovered from the pregnant solutions either by precipitation with metallic aluminum or by electrodeposition. The solubility of HgS in alkaline sulfide solutions was first reported by Volhard in 1878.' The first reported commercial application was made in 1915 when Thornhill applied the method to the treatment of an amalgamation tailing.3 Mullhollen, in 1911. described the chemical reaction of HgS with Na,S and alkaline hydrate to be:4 Most investigators have reported using a 4-pct sodium sulfide and a 1-pct sodium hydroxide soluti~n.3-4 An increase in temperature or excessive dilution of the solution causes the reaction to be reversed. Church Holmes described a similar process used for the extraction of antimony from silver concentrates at the Sunshine Mining Company's mill at Kellogg. Idaho.5 More recently. Erspamer and Wells reported the results of leaching studies on a Hg-Sb ore from Alaska.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Leaching tests were made on samples of mercury ore from eight deposits in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In addition. tests were made on flotation concentrates from seven of the samples as well as a flotation concentrate from an operating mill. Since previous investigators reported reagent requirements greatly in excess of that required by the equation HgS + Na2S = HgS . Na2S, initial studies were made on chemically pure HgS. Results showed that the reaction actually required about 1 g of Na,S per g of HgS in an aqueous solution rather than 0.338 g of Na,S as indicated by the equation. To check further the matter of reagent requirements, Na2S and HgS were mixed together in equal mole ratios. Water was then added, a drop at a time, until the components reacted; X-ray diffraction analyses showed no HgS nor Na,S present. The yellow hydrate compound which formed would not redissolve until about three additional mole equivalents of Na,S were added to the solution. This indicated that a stable solution would require at least 4 moles of Na2S for each mole of HgS. While these implications may be valid for pure HgS, the possibility of entirely different results caused by the existence of other elements present in ores and concentrates was recognized. Consequently, experiments of the same order were made on samples of a flotation concentrate from a producing mill. The concentrate, containing about 18 pct

It appears that in the earlier days of anthracite coal mining, 1824-25, the Lehigh region mined 76 per cent. of all the coal sent to market. During the same period Wyoming sent 12 and 5 per cent. respectively, whilst the Schuylkill sent 11 and 18 per cent., the number of tons marketed being in those days very small indeed. In the year 1828 the Schuylkill region mined over one-half of all the coal sent to market, and continued to do so for thirty years (with the exception of the year 1831), until 1858 ; since that date the production has declined very steadily in comparison with the other regions, until, in 1876, it was only 34 per cent. Wyoming, in the year 1820, was mining 40 per cent., but the production of all the regions was very small; in six years it declined to 5 per cent., increased to 34 per cent. in 1831, declined to 10 per cent. in 1838. Since which time the increase has been gradual, until 1873-75 Wyoming produced over 50 per cent. of all the anthracite coal sent to market. In 1867 the production exceeded that of Schuylkill, and has continued to do so since that time. In the year 1876, during the existence of the "coal combination," Wyoming lost 9 per cent.; during the same time Lehigh gained 7 and Schuylkill 2 per cent. over their relative production of the preceding year, the decrease of Wyoming being two and a half million tons, the increase of the Lehigh one million, the decrease of the Schuylkill nearly three-quarters of a million. The extraordinary production of the Lehigh region at a time of decreased demand and in opposition to an agreement with the other regions to limit the supply to the supposed demand mas the cause of the disagreement which ultimately broke up the combination of the great coal-producing and carrying companies. The Lehigh region produced very steadily, from 1829 to 1854, an average of about 22 per cent. of the whole production. From 1854

GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES DIVISION OF ENGINEERING Government supervision of employment for technical men has been inaugurated by the United States Employment Service, through the establishment of a Division of Engineering, with A. H. Krom, of Chicago, formerly Secretary of the American Association of Engineers, as Director. War demands on the engineering profession have already caused a serious shortage of men with mechanical designing experience and those with practical experience in chemical engineering. At present the professional organizing mediums reach less than 20 per cent. of the estimated 300,000 technical men in the country. This is not a satisfactory arrangement for war times. All the technical men of the country must be reached and, in addition, all men with technical experience must be carefully registered so that they will be immediately available. The advantages of such a governmental registering and systematizing of employment will be apparent at once, to the engineer. Considering that this is principally an engineer's war, the importance of Federal direction of distribution and conservation of the technical service of the country is apparent. The Service will he started through the office of the Director of Engineering, 29 S. LaSalle St., Chicago. All technical men desiring to register for emergency Government work or permanent advancement in positions meeting their qualifications, are urged to volunteer at once for registration, classification and employment.

Though much has been written during the past several years about the Russian success in using hydraulic jets for coal mining, little or none of the published information, in so far as this writer has observed, has been of any use or practical application in this country. It is true, according to their published reports, that the Russians were pioneers in the use of high-pressure water jets in the mining of coal. They report the use of water jets for this purpose as early as 1936. However, according to a survey of foreign literature on the subject made by the U.S. Bureau of Mines1 a few years ago, water jets in the USSR, as well as in other nations including New Zealand, Poland and West Germany, were used principally to sluice the loosened coal after it had been previously drilled and blasted, rather than to cut or break it from the solid face. The interest of the Northern Pacific in the potential application of a high-pressure water jet to the actual extraction of coal, particularly in steeply dipping beds, originated in a visit by this author to the operations of the American Gilsonite Co. at Bonanza, Utah, in March 1958. After seeing the extraction, on a commercial basis, of gilsonite from a 22-ft wide vertical vein of this solid material with a 3/8-in. diam stream of water under approximately 2200 psi, it was felt that, with some modifications, water jets were the solution to the problem of economically mining the steeply dipping (i.e., steeper than 20º) coal beds in the State of Washington.

IT IS most appropriate for mining engineers and in fact for all engineers to perfect themselves in leader-ship, because in the last ten years there has been a growing realization on the part of capital that there is no man who by capacity and training is better fitted to manage industrial production than the engineer. In high places the engineer and particularly the mining engineer is coming into his own. We have Mr. Hoover as Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Hammond as the head of the Federal Fact-finding Coal Commission, and Prince Caetani as Royal Italian Ambassador, all mining engineers. More and more in all industries is the manager more likely to be an engineer than he was five, ten, fifteen or twenty years ago, and the feeling is that the man who has had a technical training, whether from going to a school or from burning the midnight oil, makes a better manager than the man who has not. We find in mining that the best man for a manager is one who has had engineering, training. The manager who comes up from the office, from the purchasing department or from the transportation department may make a fairly good manager but he is never so good as the man who has had a technical training. He cannot speak the language of his staff.

The interior of West Australia is an arid table-land, elevated 1400 feet above the sea. This plateau is flanked to the south by the Tertiary limestones which fringe the Great Australian Bight. It is bordered northward by the Carboniferous beds of the Fitzroy river and westward by the granite of the Darling hills, while to the cast this wide area, about 900 miles square, slopes downward imperceptibly into an undulating plain of sand, which stretches with dismal persistence across the boundary of South Australia. The waters of the ocean receded from this tract of land long ago; it is probably the oldest landsurface on the globe, and represents the basal wreck of a much larger continent. Fig. 1 is a map of this region. The Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie gold-fields are situated in the southwestern part of the region. The rock-formation consists of granite penetrated by diorites and andesites. The latter are occasionally associated with tuff's, which have been readily mistaken for sedimentaries. There are no fossil-bearing rocks, such as would afford a datum-line from which to measure the relative geological age of the prevailing formation. On the extreme edges of the mining territory there are, it is true, remnants of sand-rock which are considered identical with the " Desert Sandstone " of Queensland, determined by Daintree to be of Mesozoic age. But even this formation has evidently been laid down so long subsequent to the underlying rocks that it serves merely to emphasize their much greater antiquity. In their characteristics and in their relations to each other, the granite and the diorite of the Coolgardie region appear to me much to resemble the Laurentian granite and the Huronian

The direct precipitation of uranium with hydrogen peroxide has been known since 1877. Commercial use of the process began in the 1960s. During 1967 the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) assisted the Climax Uranium Co., Grand Junction, CO in the development of a uranyl peroxide precipitation process to control a molybdenum impurity problem (Shabbir and Tame, 1978). Atlas Minerals, Moab, UT has used hydrogen peroxide to control vanadium and sodium levels in uranium concentrates since 1969 (Caropresso and Badger, 1973). Recently, the use of hydrogen peroxide by the uranium industry has grown, particularly since the increased demand for uranium has led to the processing of low grade ores. Impurities present in low-grade ores can be concentrated with the uranium during milling and will substantially complicate the refining of uranium yellowcake concentrates. Consequently, commercial nuclear fuel processors have imposed stringent specifications and penalties to control these impurities. The ability to produce a pure uranium yellowcake can eliminate penalty or reprocessing costs. Hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium is specific and quantitative, producing a very high purity product. Although the hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium has, and continues to be used primarily as means of producing a high purity yellowcake, it has also become an important process due to the superior physical properties of the precipitate. Under normal operating conditions, the precipitate produced by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and uranium is dense, easily filtered and dried. The final dry yellowcake is pure, high U308 assay product. Consequently, processing costs such as filtering, drying and/or calcining and drumming, can be reduced compared to ammonia, caustic or Mag-Ox precipitation.

Friction hoisting has assumed a major role since its introduction to North America less than ten years ago. Interest was illustrated by a recent visit of the Adirondack Section of AIME to a new friction hoist at Chateaugay mine of Republic Steel Corp. at Lyon Mountain, N. Y. The 80-in. diam, 4-rope machine at Lyon Mountain is typical of modern friction hoists. The hoist is mounted on a structural steel tower without deflection sheaves.

In planning the present experiments, we have made a particular effort to secure that adjustment of working conditions which would render the forthcoming tests most serviceable by way of indicating the comparative properties of the three different commercial grades of copper used. More specifically, we have endeavored to obtain certain definite information with respect to the relative behavior under test of ordinary electrolytic copper and furnace-refined lake copper containing (a) a moderate percentage of arsenic and (b) a rather large percentage of arsenic, in addition to the usual content of silver and other impurities. These comparisons were made systematic and comprehensive by testing throughout a series of (eight) reductions running from 0 to 70 per cent. in the case of cold-rolled metal, and throughout a series of (15) temperatures running from 100' C. to 1,000" C. in the case of annealed metal. In other words, a survey of properties similar to that made by Grard,' in the case of electrolytic copper, was here repeated (with modifications) and extended to two other commercial varieties of copper. The great importance of copper both as a material of construction and as the base of our most important alloys (aside from steel) has led to innumerable investigations of its properties, particularly in commercial forms. Naturally, the merits of furnace-refined lake coppers us. those of the very pure electrolytic product have furnished the subject of much experimental work and animated discussion, wherein the effect of arsenic has by no means been overlooked. When a plastically deformed mctal is heated to a certain temperature, it undergoes a complete change in microstructure, the consequence of which is a marked alteration of mechanical properties such as hardness, strength and ductility. This change in microstructure occurs by re-crystallization and is a process involving the formation and growth of strain-free nuclei in the deformed matrix. These nuclei continue to form with time and grow until a new grain structure replaces the cold-worked structure. The formation of the nuclei in the deformed sheet of I per cent silicon ferrite is illustrated in Fig. I. If a recrystallization is conducted iso-thermally, a nleasurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time leads to an isothermal recrystallization curve, first established in 1942.1 Such recrystallization curves are shown in Fig. 4. These curves show that the recrystallization of a cold-worked metal is best considered as a rate process rather than a time independent process such as is suggcsted by the improperly named and misleading recrystallization diagrams involving deformation, temperature, and grain size.2-5 Any study of the rate of recrystallization resolves itself into a study of the component rates of nucleation and growth. The previous paper1 provided an account of the determination of the rates of nucleation; N, the number of nuclei formed per unit time per unit of unre-crystallized area, and growth, G, the radial growth in unit time, in the recrystallization of silicon ferrite (I per cent Si). A method was developed to furnish experimental data for evaluating the effect of the recrystallization variables on N and G. The mathematical analysis for the derivation of the isothermal recrystallization curve was developed for a two-dimensional case (in thin sheets where the diameter of the recrystallized grain is greater than the sheet thickness). The present paper is a continuation of the study of recrystallization of I per cent silicon ferrite begun in 1942.1 In this work the effect of the factors deformation, temperature, grain size, composition, and recovery is studied with respect to the rates of liucleation and grouth. At the same time it is shown how the cooperation of N and G affects the isothermal recrystallization curve. The study of these variables on N and G has a definite bearing on the mechanism of recrystallization and should lay a foundation for a rational theory on the subject. Procedure The procedure used in these experiments was essentially the same as that described previously but in certain details some changes were made in the interests of speed. With few exceptions, the procedure is the same for the study of all the variables. Where the procedure is different from standard manipulations attention is called to this fact.

The work-hardening behavior of surface layers of aluminum and gold single crystals was investigated by alternately deforming and then removing a thin surface layer by electropolishing or by etching. Aluminum crystals exhibited lower flow stresses after the surface removal; gold crystals did not. Abrasion of surface eliminated easy glide in both gold and aluminum crystals. By alternately deforming and removing the surface layer, it was shown that the abraded crystals work-harden preferentially under the abraded layer. It is suggested that this phenomenon is caused by the difficulty of propagating dislocations through the abraded layer. It has been demonstrated in numerous cases'-3 that the plastic behavior of metals in either single-crystal or polycrystal form is sensitive to the environment and to the condition of the surface; it has also been reported4-6 that single crystals of some metals, when deformed in tension, exhibit more work hardening near the surface than in the interior. A third type of effect that has been attributed to the special part played by the surface in plastic deformation is the influence of the dimensions of the specimen on the various parameters that define its plastic-deformation characteris- tics.?-'' Many of these experiments were made on aluminum, on which an oxide film is always present under available experimental conditions; many of the effects have been attributed to the oxide film, either in terms of its higher elastic moduli, which would cause local stress redistribution, or its higher strength, which would oppose the escape of dislocations at the surface of the metal. On the other hand, it has been suggested II,12 that the mere presence of a surface should be sufficient to produce the observed results. A rigorous examination of this question could, in principle, be carried out by comparing the behavior of aluminum with its oxide film with that of the same material without oxide. This experiment would present great difficulties. The most practical alternative is to compare aluminum with gold, which has no crystalline surface film at room temperature, and to study the effects of various surface treatments on gold. The experiments described in this paper fall into two groups, the objectives of which were to determine 1) whether single crystals of gold shared the property of aluminum that the removal of a surface layer after some plastic deformation reduced the flow stress for further deformation and, since the result of this was negative, 2) whether a surface treatment could be found that caused gold to behave in this way. I) EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS All the tests described below were carried out on single crystals of about 6 by 6 mm cross section and of sufficient length to provide a gage length of about 10 cm.

Rubber-tired shuttle cars are finding increased use as gathering units in under-ground mines. As the name implies, they shuttle back and forth between the loading machine and the section transportation system. In many mines their use has in-creased the efficiency of the loading and gathering operations, resulting in increased output per man employed and decreased costs per ton. A car motivated by cable reel is shown in Fig I, and a car with battery power in Fig 2. A brief chronological account of the development of rubber-tired haulage equip-ment follows: 1936. J. H. Fletcher1 installed his first unit for the Blue Bird Coal Co., Carrier Mills, Illinois. This unit consisted of a battery-powered industrial tractor and a trailer with drop-bottom doors. The coal was transported for short distances to a hopper for discharge into mine cars. 1938. A battery-powered self-contained shut-tle car with rubber-tired wheels was built by the Joy Manufacturing Co. Two units were installed for the Katherine Coal Co., Lumberport, West Virginia. The shuttle car consisted of a materials-receiving body with a conveyor in the bottom to move the coal forward during loading and to unload the coal at the discharge station. 1938. A cable-powered shuttle car with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer was developed by A. L. Lee. Special wheels mounted on king pins on the car permitted all four wheels to be steered. The cable reel was driven by a torque motor to give the cable proper tension during the payout and uniform tension when rewound on the reel. 1940. A Joy shuttle car equipped with trolley poles and a cable reel was developed to operate on a double trolley-wire system.2 This unit was installed at a potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemicals Corporation at Carlsbad, New Mexico. It is believed to have been the first installation of its kind, and the first of shuttle cars for handling material other than coal. 1941. Truck haulage3 was introduced in the Tri State District by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company. Storage battery electric trucks were rebuilt to handle a bottom-dump trailer. 1941—Joy shuttle cars were installed in a mine of the United States Gypsum Company, Oakfield, New York. 1943—Joy shuttle cars were installed in several bauxite mines.4,5 1945—Joy shuttle cars installed in a lime-stone mine. Because of the nature of bituminous coal beds trackless equipment has had its greatest application in bituminous coal mining. Usually a shuttle car is filled by a continuous type of loader. The appraisal of an oil lease may often be mad,? through production decline analysis, which requires description of the functional relationship between the oil production rate and either cumulative production or time. Heretofore, attempts to define the function appropriate to a given set of production data have depended to some extent on subjective procedures. The purpose here is to introduce an objective solution, obtained by combining the principle of least squares with the theory of equations. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS The fundamental differential equation appropriate to a general class of decline curves may be written. Solution of Eq. 1 for general boundary conditions may be written in terms of either the cumulative oil production or time: These equations constitute the mathematical expression of the so-called hyperbolic decline. Their complete description for a given set of production data requires the numerical evaluation of the three parameters1.', n, D, and (go),. This fact is of prime importance in the application of statistical analysis. . STATISTICAL ANALYSIS For a given oil lease, the time, production rate and cumulative production are recorded records. To establish predictive formulas from Eqs. 2 and 3, it remains to determine numerical values for the three parameters [n, D, and (q,) .] through an investigation of the past history. Upon interpreting a, s and b as parameters, Eq. 8 may be expressed for every time interval of interest, i, over the past history as follows. The work to be described was undertaken at various periods from 1937 to 1939 on the Busia gold field, in the eastern province of Uganda. It was decided to examine the possibility of reef prospection by the resistivity method, for it was not known how far the usually disintegrated nature of most reefs in the ubiquitous laterite near the surface would obscure indications obtained by resistivity traverses. The work at the commencement was therefore largely experimental, but the results obtained thereby were satisfactory, and a survey was started at the Government closed area at Amonikakine. With the limited time and resources at the writer's disposal, it was not possible to complete the survey to his satisfaction or to follow up exhaustively all the geophysical indications, but some of the results of the experimental work and the survey were of sufficient interest to be worth recording; in particular the relation between the width of reef, electrode separation and shape of the curve, and the interference effect of constant separation curves over zones of float are significant and useful. Three new veins were located, but only one contained sufficient gold to warrant detailed prospection. This was called the Geophysical reef, and was uncovered over a strike distance of 1140 ft., and there are indications that it extends over a distance of 1990 ft. These results and the recom- mendations consequent therefrom were embodied in a special report to the Uganda Geological Survey. History OF the Field The Busia field is in the southeastern corner of Uganda near the Kenya-Uganda border, and is about 17 miles north of the northeastern corner of Lake Victoria. Gold was first discovered in the area in the stream beds by Davies1,2 in 1932. Subsequently numerous small alluvial claims were worked by prospectors and the area was prospected for reef by a company for periods varying from three to nine months, but was finally abandoned, as the results were considered unfavorable. Further prospecting by the Geological Survey in 1935-1936 under Davies8 and later under the writer4 uncovered three reefs with sufficient gold values to be of economic interest. These were finally taken over by a company known as Borderland Syndicate, which still owns the area, and from September 1937 to the end of 1941 about 13,000 oz. of gold was extracted from reefs of the area proved by the Geological Survey. Opencast mining operations are still proceeding (February 1943). The Amonikakine area lies to the immediate north of that of Borderland Syndicate. A certain amount of prospecting had been done when the writer started work there. As a result of his report, this area was taken over by another syndicate, but little further work was accomplished before it ceased operating because of difficulties of wartime working.

The work at the commencement was therefore largely experimental, but the results obtained thereby were satisfactory, and a survey was started at the Government closed area at Amonikakine. With the limited time and resources at the writer's disposal, it was not possible to complete the survey to his satisfaction or to follow up exhaustively all the geophysical indications, but some of the results of the experimental work and the survey were of sufficient interest to be worth recording; in particular the relation between the width of reef, electrode separation and shape of the curve, and the interference effect of constant separation curves over zones of float are significant and useful. Three new veins were located, but only one contained sufficient gold to warrant detailed prospection. This was called the Geophysical reef, and was uncovered over a strike distance of 1140 ft., and there are indications that it extends over a distance of 1990 ft. These results and the recom- mendations consequent therefrom were embodied in a special report to the Uganda Geological Survey. History OF the Field The Busia field is in the southeastern corner of Uganda near the Kenya-Uganda border, and is about 17 miles north of the northeastern corner of Lake Victoria. Gold was first discovered in the area in the stream beds by Davies1,2 in 1932. Subsequently numerous small alluvial claims were worked by prospectors and the area was prospected for reef by a company for periods varying from three to nine months, but was finally abandoned, as the results were considered unfavorable. Further prospecting by the Geological Survey in 1935-1936 under Davies8 and later under the writer4 uncovered three reefs with sufficient gold values to be of economic interest. These were finally taken over by a company known as Borderland Syndicate, which still owns the area, and from September 1937 to the end of 1941 about 13,000 oz. of gold was extracted from reefs of the area proved by the Geological Survey. Opencast mining operations are still proceeding (February 1943). The Amonikakine area lies to the immediate north of that of Borderland Syndicate. A certain amount of prospecting had been done when the writer started work there. As a result of his report, this area was taken over by another syndicate, but little further work was accomplished before it ceased operating because of difficulties of wartime working.

THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [I] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such. a plot has been con¬sidered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative, thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase .4 The reaction layers tend to have a

A large consolidated sand core was used in this investigation. Four groups of experiments including gas drives, water drives, and water drives combined with gas injection, were made. The results of the gas-drive experiments indicate that greater ultimate recovery may be obtained by higher pressure gradients. However, other considerations challenge the absolute veracity of this conclusion. Results indicate that with connate water present and a low pressure gradient during a gas drive, less gas is required to produce a given amount of oil. The saturation gradient determined during a gas drive is presented. Results of the water-drive experiments indicate that the recovery of oil is not a function of either gradient Or input rate. The presence of initial gas saturation resulted in a slightly lower final oil saturation. Injection of sufficient gas to maintain the initial gas saturation during a water drive resulted in lower final oil saturation. Introduction With the demand for petroleum products reaching an all-time record high and the location and exploitation of new reserves becoming more difficult and expensive, the oil industry must look to more thorough and efficient methods of producing the petroleum already located. Much of the previous work along these lines is exploratory and suggests a more complete investigation. For example, a great amount of laboratory work has been done on flooding sands initially saturated roo pct with oil. Since sands saturated roo pct with oil rarely, if ever, exist in nature, and because the water content is a vital factor in the ultimate recovery from the sand, laboratory investigations on cores without water must be supplemented by comparable work on cores with water present.1'2 Other investigators have done a considerable amount of laboratory work using gas and water drives.3 Krutter and Day4 have reported results of investigations using cores saturated IOO pct with oil and have concluded that " the ultimate recovery obtained, using air drive, from a completely oil-saturated core depends on the pressure gradients used. The higher the pressure gradient, the greater will be the recovery until a certain Pressure range is reached above which the reward of increased recovery is much smaller for similar increments in pressure." Yuster and Day6 conclude that less gas and less time are required to produce a given quantity of oil at high pressure gradients than at low pressure gradients; they also conclude that an increase in the viscosity of the oil requires a proportionate increase in the gas needed for recovery. Their results indicate that the gas required to produce a given quantity of oil is greatly reduced by the presence of connate water. R. C.
