In the integrated steel industries the sintering process plays an important role furnishing raw material to the blast furnace. In this work, a computational simulation of the sinter process is developed that is able to predict the most important phenomena within the sintering bed. The model is based on the multi phase concept with multiple components described by conservation equations of each component coupled with the momentum, chemical reactions and heat transfer. The model validation was carried out comparing the model predictions with averaged industrial data and local temperature measurements within the sinter strand. The model predictions presented good agreement with the averaged values measured on the industrial sinter process.

In the mining industry, it is common to have data collected in various formats. In an open pit mining operation, at the early stages of exploration samples are obtained from diamond drillholes. During the production stage, samples are collected from blastholes. The last is more numerous but less precise. From a geostatistical view, this dissimilarity has to be considered to integrate the two sources of information. To combine this different data, three methodologies were investigated: simple kriging with local varying mean, cokriging and ordinary kriging. The exhaustive Walker Lake data set was used and it is considered the source to obtain the true grades. Initially, samples were obtained from the exhaustive data set at a regular spacing grid of 20 x 20 meters. Next, samples were obtained again from the exhaustive dataset at a regular spacing of 5 x 5 meters and a relative error of 25% was added. Then, both data were used to estimate blocks using the three methods mentioned. The grade tonnage curves were compared with the true block grade distribution. Moreover, the block misclassification was evaluated. The results showed that ordinary kriging produced estimates closer to the true block grade distribution and reduced the block misclassification.

For product sustainability “closing the cycle” is the first requirement. If the materials used in making the product is not replenished at the rate at which it is being extracted, the cycle is open and the product would not be sustainable. This includes the materials used in generating the energy used to make the product, the transportation, use and disposal. If the materials used in a product, that includes lubricants, is one that cannot be replenished, it has to be recycled for the product to be sustainable. The other basic condition for sustainability is the eco-friendliness of the product. It is argued that the present lubricants do not fall in this category. Using the example of cutting oil emulsions we have shown that it is possible to meet the conditions of sustainability in terms of both the material extraction-replenishment cycle and eco-toxicity. Cutting oil emulsions made from coconut oil and natural additives are shown to have superior cutting properties and are completely eco-friendly. It is concluded that products made using these conditions are possible and is a necessity for man to lead a sustainable life. Closing the cycle, with respect to the energy used in the cycle will make the product completely eco-friendly.

This report gives in the first part the metallurgical basics for the production of AHSS grades in integrated steel plants starting at the melt shop and ending at the annealing lines of the cold mill. The corresponding process and plant technologies in each production step with its specifics and rules are explained. In the second part by way of example the practical requirements for TRIP 780 steel grade are highlighted like a recipe for process control in the steel plant, hot and cold rolling mill, annealing line and finally skin pass mill. Measuring of mechanical technological properties on samples shows that the specifications according to DIN EN 10268 are fulfilled.

Tandem cold mill (TCM) is a process to obtain flatness as well as thickness desired by the customer by rolling hot-rolled coils continuously. The final stand of the TCM plays the most important role of flatness control, which usually uses the real-time measurement at the exit. However, as the material property increases, it is not easy to handle flatness with only the final stand. In order to overcome such a limitation, we propose a feedback control method to strengthen flatness control for non-final stands. The proposed method was tested in an actual production line, and the effect is proved for 45K or less steel grade.

A new method of manufacturing the wavy-tilt-dam(WTD) mechanical seal has been mentioned. In this method, the special equipment is designed to provide a predetermined force to external and inner circular surface of the ring. After milling the end face of the seal by grinding miller and releasing the preload, the wavy-tilt-dam can be done on the seal surface. In this paper, a prediction model is built up to investigate the relationship between the predetermined force and the deformation on the surface of the ring by using ANSYS software. A WTD ring is manufactured by this method which approves that the prediction model is in accord with the real process and this manufacturing method of the WTD mechanical seal is a proper choice.

Due to growing concern about the ambient impacts, lignocellulosic fibers are been investigated to replace the synthetic ones in polymer composites The giant bamboo fiber, a relatively unknown lignocellulosic fiber with potential for composite reinforcement, still needs to characterize for possible engineer applications. However the giant bamboo fiber has low adhesion with the polymeric matrix. In order to understand the interaction that occurs between the bamboo fiber and the polymer matrix is necessary to evaluate its physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, the present work analyzed the giant bamboo fiber by means of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The spectrum revealed main absorption bands typical of giant bamboo fiber specific molecular interactions.

Energy efficiency is coming to the center of attention in the metallurgical and rolling mill industry due to increasing energy costs, limited resources and political requirements. Also, a green image and energy efficient production is a clear competitive advantage. SMS Siemag, being familiar with automation and measurement equipment, provides an energy data management system which gives transparency over the energy consumptions. All energy relevant media including electricity, gas, water, compressed air and further more can be recorded. The system is manufacturer-independent and allows the use of already installed measuring technology with the possibility of subsequent extension. So potentials for improvement can be recognized and energy savings can be estimated and proven after the implementation of the measures. Being familiar with the processes in the metallurgical and rolling plants, the system by SMS Siemag allows the assignment of the energy data to the production and plant data. Only by this connection, the data can be reduced to key performance indicators allowing authoritative evaluation of energy efficiency. The results are clearly represented on dashboards and support the continuous improvement process. The system also supports the energy controlling with an automatic reporting system, cost center assignment and in support with certification according to ISO 50001.

Electromagnetic based (EM) sensor technology has been shown to detect changes in the magnetic permeability of steel strip travelling down the run out table after rolling. Measuring below the Curie temperature, these changes can be interpreted in terms of the phase transformation from austenite (paramagnetic) to ferrite (ferromagnetic). These real time measurements provide a detailed insight into the changes in the structure at high temperature providing the steel producer with feedback on quality control, product consistency and product development. However unlike mill microstructure models, the sensor measurement provides a point reading at a distance through the cooling course. To map the transformation in more detail, a sensor array is required along the length of the Run Out Table i.e. to measure points on the austenite to ferrite transformation curve. This paper describes the process and metallurgical factors that should be considered in the optimum design of a sensor array, i.e. the number and location of the sensor heads. Examples of cooling strategies for different steel grades e.g. low carbon, structural and dual phase steels are used to demonstrate the importance of sensor location. In addition, the effect of variability within typical industrial parameters e.g. cooling speed, on the sensitivity of sensor output and location will be considered.

This article deals with a project to reduce the preparation time and threading the coils in the input section of a pickling line coupled to the cold strip mill (PLTCM) at ArcelorMittal Vega. The project developed serves for the detection and elimination of bottlenecks in the input section. The project was conceived by the philosophy of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and Lean Six Sigma (6 sigma), here seen as sequencing serial / parallel in the preparation and threading the coils. In this context, a proposal to modify the automatic sequencing and reduction of interruptions due to failure of the automation / equipment confirmed its effectiveness reducing the total time preparation time and threading the coils in the entry section by 15%. This project was developed without investment costs, bringing gains on the order of US$613,769.00.

A pitting corrosion study of welded joints of lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS) UNS S32304 has been performed. LDSS S32304 thick plates were welded by different processes commonly employed in equipment and piping construction: SMAW (Shielded metal arc welding), GMAW (Gas metal arc welding) and FCAW (Flux cored arc welding). The electrochemical behavior of different weldment zones (fusion zone (FZ), base metal (BM) and heat affected zone (HAZ)) was characterized both independently using an electrochemical microcell and together through whole sample analysis. The electrochemical method applied was performed in acidified glycerin, a process fluid of the biodiesel industry. The results were correlated to the microstructural features of the materials. Based on the results, is possible to conclude that the breakdown potential (Eb) of the fusion zone (FZ) was higher than the Eb obtained for the heat affected zone (HAZ). In general, top samples show higher breakdown potential than root samples and also the samples welded using filler metal 2209 has a better anodic behavior than the filler metal 2307. According to the results, GMAW welding process with 2209 as filler metal was revealed as the optimum chosen for application of 2304 duplex stainless steels in this case.

Gerdau Ouro Branco´s plate mill started the operation in 2016 with high level technology. Stands out the capacity to produce different thicknesses in a same plate, therefore allowing special service for sectors such as building structures, bridges, shipbuilding and mechanical applications. The purpose of this study is to present the first results obtained in this innovative product in Brazil. Some slabs of EN10025-2 S355JR+AR steel were rolled and were evaluated the dimensional tolerances, mechanical properties uniformity, grain size, surface and internal qualities. In addition, a correlation was observed between slab and plate thickness reduction and internal plate quality. The results show that this technology can be used with adequate performance for these steel grades in the current market.

Los aceros para armaduras de hormigón tienen que exhibir una buena relación entre resistencia y tenacidad que se ve reflejado en la performance del producto en servicio al ser aplicado a esfuerzos exigidos. Acerbrag es una empresa que produce aceros para la industria de la construcción teniendo en su gama los aceros de medio carbono para la fabricación de barras conformadas de dureza natural para armaduras en estructuras de hormigón. El objetivo de este trabajo es encontrar criterios de ventanas de trabajos operacionales y de control para la manufactura de aceros con buenas propiedades mecánicas en términos de resistencia y tenacidad. Este paper muestra los resultados de los trabajos realizados en las diferentes áreas productivas para conseguir un producto final con mayor resistencia a altas exigencias en servicio, además, reporta diferentes aspectos del proceso de manufactura del producto que van desde el ajuste de la composición química del acero, incluyendo criterios de propiedades mecánicas objetivos, criterios de calidad interna mostrando la microestructura de la barra antes y después de los cambios y finalmente la calidad dimensional y superficial de la barra nervurada, este último potenciando la falla prematura del material. Todos estos cambios, se ven reflejados finalmente en la performance de la barra, sometida a los nuevos criterios de exigencia en los ensayos mecánicos.

This paper presents the TMT “3D TopScan” profilemeter, which is a Radar-based profilemeter that measures the total burden surface within a few seconds and on a continuous basis. This equipment is based on an electronically steered solid-state radar scanner, such that a very large amount of surface data is collected within short time intervals. These new electronically steered antenna systems are the key to meet the demands for both accuracy and speed. The TMT probe is installed at a fixed location at the top cone, such that it does not interfere with the charging, enabling a continuous measurement and a compact design.Blast furnace charging optimization can be achieved based on its measurement data. The burden surface is continuously measured every few seconds, enabling the blast furnace operator to detect any details including asymmetries or irregularities in the surface pattern. A variety of process analysis tools are available. Due to the continuous and fast measurement, the burden descent speed can be supervised without process interruption on an ongoing basis. More accurate process models (layer models) than ever are obtained which fully consider the unsymmetries.This technology, developed by TMT Tapping Measuring Technology, is successfully in operation at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH at their blast furnace B. The probe and the data evaluation tools combine today’s technological capabilities in measurement technology with the practical requirements of blast furnace operation.

The paper describes the recent new installation and start-up of the second RH (Recirculation Degasser) in Rio de Janeiro plant of thyssenkrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico. The new plant is installed as part of the existing RH, the twin solution increases the overall melt shop production in the area of quality plates especially for deep drawing grades. With this new equipment, CSA is able to increase degassed grades production with a state of art asset that has the ultimate technology in operation, safety and automation. The description of the main components parts and the operational concept gives an overview of the latest experience in RH plant engineering combined with best operational practice of world class steel producer.

Optimized CAPEX, OPEX, new products, yield and product quality in new process equipment as well as by upgrading of existing facilities are the key factors for success and profitable operation. For this, innovation in processes and design is crucial. Danieli can support their clients by offering innovative and well-thought-out process equipment and upgrade solutions. In 2018, Danieli has put into operation a complete cold processing complex in Turkey, which includes a new continuous pickling tandem mill featuring latest generation of market oriented technologies. In this line, dedicated to run a broad range of size and grades (IF to AHSS as DP1000), the highly efficient Turboflow® pickling process was selected. This technology already proved its efficiency and ability in former applications handling ultra-thin gauges at speeds even exceeding 400 m/min in the pickling tanks. The 5-stand 6-high OSRT tandem mill features important developments, like actuators to improve significantly strip flatness and a special air knife arrangement on the tandem mill exit side to generate perfect strip surface cleanliness. In galvanizing lines, the zinc pot is the most effective area to reduce costs in operation and consumables and increase the product quality. Danieli has spent significant efforts in developing most advanced technology for the wiping process. A fully integrated system solution has been designed to perform a wiping process with high quality, economy, accuracy and productivity. The lubricant oil is a complex mixture of different basestocks and additives. Engine oils evolved from the use of pure mineral basestocks back in the early years of automotive industry to the advent of synthetic, fully formulated, low ash lubricants. This evolution was driven by a number of factors, such as new engine designs, extended durability needs, increased fuel economy needs, environmental concerns, feedstock prices and availability and legal issues. This paper uses technology prospecting on literature and patents databases to allow an investigation on the historical evolution of engine oils. Main basestocks (mineral, hydrotreated, polyalphaolefins, esters) and additives (antioxidants, antiwear, friction modifiers, detergents and dispersants) are characterized according to their research effort. Technology prospecting data is crosschecked against the evolution of engine oil classes, allowing an analysis of how the main drivers push the development of lubricant oil quality. A research effort was identified in late 1990’s until mid-2000’s and related to the adoption of chemical limits for lubricants. Different patterns for the articles and patents publication account for the high value technological knowledge has in this industry. Technology prospecting is seen as a useful methodology for the understanding and forecast of lubricant technology movements.

State of the art sinter coolers are working based on the cross flow cooling principle. Thus, only a part of the thermal energy can be used for heat recovery application. The other part of the cooling air is brought unused to the environment. Furthermore, environmental regulation regarding dust emission and intelligent usage of exergy are getting stronger. Therefore, Primetals Technologies developed sinter coolers based on the counter flow principle. The cooling air passes the sinter bed in counter-flow direction enabling a direct heat transfer from the hot sinter to the air. The exhaust gas temperature can be maximized by using the total heat of the hot sinter. Due to the possible usage of the total exhaust gas amount, diffusive dust emission is reduced to zero. Two types of counter flow coolers are in the portfolio of Primetals Technologies. One type is based on a stationary shaft, in which the hot sinter is charged. The flow of the hot sinter is in vertical direction from top to bottom, in counter direction than the cooling air. The second type is a circular hopper cooler. The hot sinter is charged on top of a moving bed. At the bottom of the bed the sinter is discharged. The cooling air flows also from the bottom to the top, following the counter flow principle. Depending on the requirements, one of the two counter flow cooler types can be chosen for optimized and efficient cooling of hot sinter..
