Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

The Bibliographic Data Base is the result of a literature search con-ducted as one task of the technology assessment of current and advanced logging techniques, sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. After compilation, the bibliography was converted to an automated form for ease of utilization, and to allow for maintaining and updating the data base. The data base covers articles, symposia, books, patents, corporate and government reports, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging from January 1969 through December 1975. Periodic up-dating will be necessary to keep the data base contents in step with developments in the rapidly advancing field of application of borehole logging to mining. Many bibliographic indexes were scanned for entries relating to the subject of interest, and those entries which were included in our data base contain a reference to the bibliographic index in which they were listed (see Section 2.4.7). With the aid of these indexes, a vast number of publications, including foreign reports and publications, have been scanned for works relevant to borehole logging technology.

The various types of risks that arise in minerals industry projects are usually financial, technical, or environmental, and the key to valid risk analysis is complete integration of all risks, both within and between categories. Geographical information systems (GIS) and geostatistical simulation methods can provide a means of integrating data and conducting realistic risk analyses. Risk can be quantified but there are limitations to numerical approaches to risk assessment. Realistic quantification requires adequate models of the processes that give rise to risk. Risk perception must also be taken into account when conducting risk assessment and reporting the results, especially in public forums. The modelling and visualisation capabilities of a combined GIS/simulation system can provide the means of dealing with perception in risk analysis

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. Currently, the operation consists of an underground mine and integrated processing plant. Uranium is produced from leaching of flotation tailings and is a co-product to copper cathode with by-product gold and silver bullion. The Olympic Dam geometallurgy team began studying ore from the Southern Mine Area (SMA) in 2006 and soon discovered uranium behaviour was far more variable than the behaviour in the Northern Mine Area, which had been mined from the start of the operation in 1988. The primary objective of Olympic Dam geometallurgy is to develop metallurgical performance predictors that reliably describe the process performance of different ore types and distribute these into the resource block model for use as a fundamental input into mine planning. The nature of the uranium mineralisation (compositionally and texturally complex and highly variable) meant that classic mineralogy techniques alone could not provide the resolution required for prediction of uranium extraction. However, the combination of quantitative mineralogy, results from laboratory-scale leach tests and modelling within the geometallurgy program has enabled prediction of both uranium flotation recovery (via association with sulphides) and uranium leach extraction, including at variable leach conditions. These stope-based predictions have supported trade-off decisions between operating costs and uranium revenue, and have predicted the changing recovery as the mining operations have moved into the Southern Mine Area in recent years.

"The metal mining industry in Canada has been dramatically affected by the changes that have occurred in the world mineral market place. World economic restructuring in the post ""oil shock"" period of the mid-1970s, greatly increased competition from suppliers in the developing countries, and commodity price and currency pressures have all combined to severely test Canadian competitiveness. In the new mining world, the rate of growth of demand for metals has declined due to product downsizing, materials substitution, and a relatively slower growth of over-all world economic activity.The interplay of market and political factors is complex. Canadian metal mining companies must compete in world markets against low-cost producers in developing nations whose priorities often appear to be centred on maximizing foreign exchange earnings to foster development goals and debt repayment. Many of these countries have high levels of government intervention in their mining industries. The result is a greatly in-creased number of suppliers all vying for a share of a world demand growing at a relatively slower rate than in the past. To be able to compete under these circumstances, Canadian companies have had to undertake 'survival mode' measures and look to new ways of doing things. In order to identify the effects that the recent market and economic trends have had on the Canadian metal mining industry, a study was undertaken by Canada Employment and Immigration to assess these changes and their implications for the metal mining workforce.The Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS)—Sector Study Group with the cooperation of the Mining Association of Canada, undertook a human resource survey to gather current employment and occupation information. This formed an important part of the Canadian Occupational Projection System Metal Mining Sector Study. This article addresses the with survey results, a C.E.I.C. worker mobility study, and trends and issues that are changing the mix of jobs and the way they are being done.Figure 1 shows metal mining employment for the period from 1974 to 1984. It provides a clear picture of the employment swings that the industry has experienced especially during the recession period of 1981 to 1983. From 1981 to 1983, employment dropped by 14 000, from 68 000 to 54 764, and then dropped to its lowest point in 1984 of 52 783. We feel that employment in the medium term will be flat with growth in gold mines being largely offset by continued workforce rationalizing in other sectors.Perhaps the key point is that equivalent levels of output have been achieved in the recent period (1981-1984) with a workforce that is 25% smaller than it was in 1974. This also raises the questions which the COPS/MAC survey and COPS mobility study sought to clarify, namely, what jobs have been cut and where have these people gone? Equally important are the questions of occupational skill level changes, and what types of jobs are declining and which ones are becoming increasingly important, as economic and technological changes have altered the mining work place."

Perhaps this is the first time that an analysis of the industrial minerals panorama has been made in Mexico for that type of commodities. Because the non-metallic minerals lack the glamour of the metallic minerals and are usually of less unit value than metallics, a comparative study of these commodities has seldom been attempted. Sulphur, fluorite, barite and few others are an exception. Consequently, the statistics on the lowest per unit value industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, gravels, sands, etc., are usually scarce and not always accurate. The following, then, will be an attempt to show a general status of the industrial minerals in Mexico with due reservations regarding volumes and values. According to Kruger (1971), this group of minerals surprisingly very little known, and called non-metallics because the lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom. It constitutes perhaps 75% of all the mineral varieties. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of common acids, sulphides, hydroxides and two elements carbon and sulphur. The list of non-metallic minerals is therefore very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and less commonly arsenates, chromates, molybdates, sulphides, tungstates and vanadates. The latter group and many of the oxides are sought usually for their metal content.

Detection and assessment of severe geological anomalies ahead of a longwall face greatly benefits the mining operation. Electromagnetic-based Radio Imaging Method (RIM) is one of the most promising geophysical methods for this task. Based on two decades of development, the latest RIM instrumentation (RIM-IV) has expanded its operational range up to 1,800ft.A site demonstration of the RIM-IV technology was recently conducted within a longwall panel. An extensive ground truth study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the RIM survey results. This study compared the generated RIM tomograms of attenuation rate with the mapped geological anomalies. Three different approaches have been employed to examine the accuracy of the RIM results and to correlate the measured signal attenuation rates with physical properties of the coal seam. The study shows that the RIM-IV technology is able to identify and delineate those geological features that would severely affect the longwall mining operation.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. "For new mining projects or for medium- to long-term areas of existing mines, drilling data is invariably on a relatively large grid. Direct estimates for selective mining units (SMUs), and also for much larger block units, will then be smoothed due to the information effects and the high error variance.The difficulty is that ultimately, during mining, selection will be done on the basis of SMUs on the final close-spaced data grid (grade control), which will then be available, i.e. the actual selection will be more efficient, with fewer misclassifications. However, this ultimate mining position is unknown at the project feasibility stage and therefore has to be estimated. This estimation is required because any cash flow calculations made on the basis of the smoothed estimates will obviously misrepresent the overall economic value of the project, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the average grade of the orebody. Similarly, unsmoothed estimates will be conditionally biased and will give even worse results, particularly in local areas of short- and medium-term planning or mining.This paper presents a case study of indirect post-processing and proportional modelling of recoverable resources designed for mediumand long-term mine planning at the Gold Fields’ Tarkwa Mine in Ghana. The case study compares long-term indirect recoverable mineral resource estimates based on typical widely spaced feasibility data to the corresponding production grade control model as well as the mine production. The paper also proposes certain critical regression slope and kriging efficiency control limits to avoid inefficient medium- to longterm recoverable estimates, and highlights the danger of accepting block estimates that have a slope of regression less than 0.5."

The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

"This article explains the ways in which investment on mining infrastructure is a geopolitical issue. It discusses the effect of installing sufficient infra structure to get the product to the world market, and argues that there is a risk involved in depending on traditional suppliers who wish to invest in the infrastructure. It explains how to make a distinction between dedicated purpose infrastructure and general use infrastructure by examining the positions of the main actors in mining projects. It argues that these positions can not be understood as analogous to projects in developed countries. To conclude, infrastructure is a crucial link in the supply chain to market but the relative size of such projects in relation to the economy means that investors decisions in developing countries have quite different implications from those in developed countries."

West Virginia University researchers examined risk and exposure in the roof bolter operator's job and developed approaches for preventing accidents and for evaluating system and human performances that may be appropriate as a general application to improve safety and efficiency in the industry. Using a microanalysis of accident data and underground observations, the researchers classified bolting injuries within one of four work routines: 1) drilling bolt holes; 2) bolt installation; 3) machine tramming, (re)positioning and setting the ATRS; and 4) general face preparation. Time and motion studies were then combined with injury data analysis to develop risk and severity indices, as well as a severity-weighted index that served to determine the degree of risk and exposure by work routine. More than two dozen bolting-related problems were identified as potential situations that could lead to injuries or expose workers during their job. Approaches to avoid these situations were suggested and then applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. These suggestions encompassed the three E's of Safety (Engineering, Education, and Enforcement) and emphasized the analysis of worker behaviors that lead to human error accidents.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. "This paper will explain how the Contractor and Owner avoided a contractual dispute involving characterization, impacts, and final remedy for challenging ground conditions encountered during drill and blast excavation of the starter tunnel required for launch of the tunnel boring machine (TBM). During excavation more than 600 feet underground, the Contractor encountered a large complex fault zone subject to more than 14 bar of water pressure. Successive ground inflows from the fault complex over a six-month period presented significant technical and partnership challenges for the team and ultimately delayed the project by nearly one year. This paper will discuss how the Contractor, Owner, and their respective consultants worked together to address these challenges, make decisions, and ultimately move the project to successful completion. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven states of the western United States of America rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River basin, including the Rocky Mountains, the Wind River Mountains, and the Uinta Mountains. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. During the 1980s and 1990s, snowfall was relatively abundant and Colorado River flows were high on average. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present day, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished. In fact, a trend toward diminishing flows is evident during the period of the historical record. This variability in Colorado River flows and the trend to lower flows is represented in the following Figure 1."

The use of an equivalent continuum for a rock mass is not always suitable for situations where the failure is structurally controlled by discontinuities as in the case of wedges in the tunnel roof. In these instances, discontinuum approaches are usually preferred. Rock joints that are filled with soft infill are likely to be the weakest planes in a rock mass, having a dominant influence on its overall shear behaviour. In this case, the joint material model adopted for the discontinuities should be able to describe important mechanisms, such as asperity sliding and shearing, post-peak behaviour, asperity deformation, and the effect of the soft infilling. The latest version of a soil-infilled joint model is discussed here. It describes more comprehensively than previous models the occurrence of dilation and compression with lateral displacements, and also represents the hardening mechanism related to asperity interference as observed in the laboratory that cannot be readily captured by the existing joint models. An analytical approach for the analysis of rock wedges structurally controlled by soil infilled joints is presented.The analytical approach presented in this paper for assessment of symmetric rock wedges in the roof of a tunnel demonstrates, that the peak shear strength of the joint may not be fully mobilised before detachment of the wedge. The analysis verifi ed that an overestimation of the factor of safety may be observed when an elastic-perfectly-plastic joint model was assumed, whereas the computed maximum factor of safety was considerably less when adopting an appropriate soil-infilled joint model.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications. KEYWORDS: Gearless Mill Drives, Gearless Conveyor Drives, Availability, SAG Mill, Ball Mill, Overland Conveyor, Antapaccay INTRODUCTION – THE GEARLESS PRINCIPLE The principle idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump…) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch…), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment) Intermediate gearboxes are not required when a motor is used with a rated speed that directly matches the speed requirement of the driven equipment. Furthermore the VSD can be used to smoothly start the motor and to vary speed during operation, which means that it satisfies both requirements."

"Nickel concentrate smelting started in Harjavalta in 1959. First, flash smelting - Peirce-Smith converting route was applied, and the high-grade converter matte was further refined to nickel cathodes. In 1995 the original smelter flow sheet was simplified with the novel DON (Direct Outokumpu Nickel) technology. In Harjavalta with the DON technology, high-grade nickel matte with low iron content is produced in flash smelting furnace directly without subsequent converting stage. The metal values in the smelting slag are recovered in an electric furnace as an iron containing bottom alloy. Main special features in Boliden Harjavalta nickel smelter are smelting of high-magnesia concentrates, the high recoveries of nickel and copper, as well as those of PGM`s and cobalt.Sulfur and dust emissions to air can be seen generally as one main disadvantage of nickel smelting operations. In Harjavalta continuous improvements in environmental performance has been rewarded by minimum sulfur and dust emissions to the environment and working atmosphere. Today Boliden Harjavalta’s nickel smelter is presenting state-of-art-technology at nickel smelting.This paper describes the nickel smelter process and includes recent production and emission data. It describes features required to achieve environmental and occupational hygiene goals and compares environmental performance data to that published on other smelting operations. General description of New Boliden Way is presented and a case example of production stability project is also presented."

The use of solid state track deters allows totally passive, integrating measurements of 222Rn (radon) or of 220Rn (thoron) plus radon. A track-detecting solid is placed in a holder that is closed by a selective membrane and exposed to the atmosphere of interest to produce an accurately time-averaged record over times of interest that range typically from a week to a year. By selection of the proper membranes, dosimetry can be done for radon or for the sum of radon and thoron. A different membrane is appropriate for measuring radon under humid conditions such as are found in the ground. Large numbers of measurements have been made with these systems both in the ground, where radon levels are high, and in indoor environments, where levels are orders of magnitude less. Calibrations have been carried out at both high and low concentrations of radon. New results in the air at the site of the Shirley Basin mine and mill give reproducible results with month-long integrating periods. The off-site background levels are in the range 0.7 to 1.0 pCi/l (26-37 Bq/m3). The average yearlong on-site level is 1.5 pCi/l (56 Bq/m3); at the mill it is 2.6 pCi/l (96 Bq/m3); and the level measured at the backhoe in the open pit mine is 3.9 pCi/l (144 Bq/m3). The region of significantly elevated radon levels is confined to a radius of 1.6 km of the mine and mill. All of the on-site radon concentrations are less than but comparable to the typical values found in the living areas of modern energy-efficient homes.

This article focuses on TurkeyÆs gold potential with respect to exploration, development and operation after 1985. Apart from TurkeyÆs geology, which offers a substantial number of volcanic-associated gold (Ag) and gold-copper (Au-Cu) projects, there are numerous other factors which make the country a favourable place for mining. Turkey has a mining history which goes back to pre-Roman times and an excellent mining code which ensures security for long-term production. In the country, the Government and local villagers are very positive and the country works extremely well logistically with excellent road and telecommunication links. The opportunities for new discoveries in Turkey are very high. Moreover, Turkey has its eyes turned west as it moves towards joining the European Community and it is no surprise that international companies believe it has got its timing as well as its partner relationship right. Newmont, Teck Cominco, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Eldorado Gold, etc all have direct or indirect interests in Turkey, as do an increasing number of midtier and junior exploration companies. Turkish Koza Gold Mining is the first Au producing company of Turkey. The Eldorado Gold owned 245 t Kisladag Au deposit in Western Turkey is currently also producing Au. In the meantime Anatolia Minerals Development is advancing the 131 t resource at the C÷pler Au deposit in North Eastern Turkey. These are significant world-class deposits. Further encouragement for investment in the Au mining sector has been provided by the introduction of a new mining law in 1985. Foreign investments in the country were encouraged and have seen a rapid increase in the last two decades. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is in excess of five per cent per annum, inflation is down from 70 per cent to single figures, the budget deficit has been cut by 40 per cent to 11 per cent and industrial output and productivity are increasing rapidly. Turkey is politically and economically stable, is a member of the European Customs Union, has a supportive mining legislation, is highly prospective and under-explored and hosts significant recent gold discoveries.

"This paper presents the results of an industrial test using 8 t/d of Baotou concentrate (50% REO) of a clean metallurgical process, which includes: 1. Roasting with H2SO4 at low temperature (220~260 0C) in a batch roasting furnace followed by water leaching to obtain a leach liquor as feed with a yield of >95% RE and Th, recovering F as fluoride, producing a leach residue amounting to 1/3 of an equivalent high temperature residue and containing <0.03% Th and radioactivity < 3×104 Bq/kg compared to the normal high temperature residue containing 0.2-0.3% Th and 1×105 Bq/kg. 2. Separating Th with N1923 and extracting RE by P507 has been completed in mixer-settlers. Test results indicate that the ThO2 product has a purity of > 95% with a yield of 99%, and the RE has a yield of >95%, in which ThO2/REO <5×10-6, and that P507 loaded RE connect straight with separating RE using P507-HCl system. 3. Treatment and multipurpose use of "three wastes" (water, gas and solids) are discussed in some detail."
