"INTRODUCTIONGold tailings retreatment plants have been operated for many years throughout the world. Several large tailings retreatment facilities have been operated profitably in South Africa since 1976 and there are tailings retreatment operations in Canada currently in production with more in the feasibility stages.The Timmins Gold Tailings Project of ERG Resources Inc. was designed to treat 8,000,000 tonnes per annum of gold tailings for an eight month operating season, and commissioning of the operation began in July 1988. The payback period for this project is about 3 years which corresponds to an IRR of 30%.This report summarizes the metallurgical characteristics of the reclaim tailings, describes the process flowsheet which was developed to enable ERG to economically recover gold from the Timmins area tailings, and reviews commissioning activities."

1972 constituted the second year of the projected five-year study on constitutive relations of coal. The schedule adhered closely to the five-year outline which is summarized in Table 1. This chapter is intended to serve as introduction and concise synopsis of the year's activities and results, which are presented in greater detail in the following chapters, which have been contributed by the individual researchers in charge of the various aspects of the project under study. Coal Sources, Material Procurement, and Sample Preparation Most of the studies performed during 1972 were done on coal from two sources: the Old Ben Mine #22 in Illinois, and the Bruceton Mine in the Pittsburgh seam of Pennsylvania, which may be considered typical of coal sources of economic importance in the Midwestern and Eastern part of the U.S. These two mines have proven to be reliable suppliers of coal material for our research. We have been able to establish good working relations with their personnel and feel that we can continue to count on their cooperation and help.

Of the 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project, connecting the cities of Taipeiand Kaohsiung, the 23 km alignment on Contract C230 required the construction of5755 m of shallow mined tunnels ranging from 137 m to 1285 m in length. All nine of these tunnels were mined using NATM methodology. On September 6, 2002, a collapse occurred in Tunnel T08 that affected approximately 50 m of tunnel. There was little warning. However, the crew was evacuated approximately 45 minutes prior to failure and thus, no injuries or loss of equipment. This paper will discuss the mining methods, jet grouting ground support, and the instrumentation selected for the rehabilitation and monitoring of the tunnel.

In this paper, the model of optimizing selection on preparation of Powdery Emulsion Explosives(PEE) is established by the Neural Net Theory(NNT). On the basis of some data in the study of PEE, the training, prediction and optimizing selection of the Neural Net (NN) model are finished by a compiling procedure. In New Zealand, volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are found in three main geological environments associated with: 1.   ophiolitic basalts of Oligocene age in Northland and East Cape (eg Pupuke, Pakotai, Parakao and Lottin Point); 2.   with chert and pillow lava in greywacke sequences of Permian-Jurassic age (Torlesse and Waipapa terranes; eg Kawau Island, Te Kumi and Maharahara) and their metamorphic equivalents (Haast Schist; eg Moke Creek and Waitahuna); and 3.   with greenschists (metabasalts) and metaserpentinite of Permian-Triassic age (Ponamu Ultramafics) in Westland (eg Bowen and Wilberg ranges). The deposits consist of small lenses of disseminated to massive sulfide minerals, mainly pyrite and chalcopyrite. Small quantities of copper ore were mined from some deposits in the 1800s (eg Kawau Island from 1846), with the last mining at Parakao from 1961 to 1966. Several deposits have been recently examined for their gold potential with assays on sulfide rock samples as high as 75 g/t Au (Lottin Point).

The current limit to power transmission for grinding mills through one mill pinion is approximately 7,500kW. Above this power rating either twin pinion arrangements or Gearless drives are required. The SMTP concept was developed to overcome this limitation by using two pinions with a single large drive motor. The SMTP mill drive offers major advantages in capital cost and greatly simplifies plant layouts, while using an innovative adaptation of industry-proven single helical gearing. Through the use of a single motor, provision of variable speed drive is greatly simplified. The SMTP can also be used for significant power upgrades on existing mills.

In attempting the predict coal cleat orientation in the subsurface for effective methane degasification of the coal beds in the Warrior coal field of Alabama, approximately 150 rock joint orientations and 45 coal cleat orientations were measured in each of 37 7 ½ minute quadrangles in Tuscaloosa, Walker, Jefferson, Fayette, Winston, Blount, and Bibb Counties. Data from these surface locations, and coal cleat data from eight underground mines was corrected for magnetic declination and titled beds rotated to the horizontal where necessary and plotted on rose diagrams for comparative analysis. Data collected on each joint and cleat consisted of attitude, quality, type, spacing, persistence, lithology, bedding thickness, surface texture, and filling. File data and published and unpublished reports from the State Survey and the State Mine Inspector's Office were re-viewed. Twenty-seven mining companies, most of which supplied information pertinant to the project were also contacted. The information obtained consisted of crop line information structure, and underground mine outlines, all of which were put on 7 ½ -minute topographic quadrangles. LANDSAT-1 imagery and Skylab photography were compared to dominant joint and cleat trends in the study area. Detailed results can be found in an open-file report entitled "Fracture Analyses in a Selected Area of the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama." A master's thesis entitled "The Relationship Between Surface Joints and Subsurface Structure in a Selected Area of the Warrior Coal Field" is being prepared to illustrate the relation-ship of the fracture system to the structure in the Warrior coal field. A proposal has been submitted for research on a project entitled "Rock Fracture Systems and Their Affects on the Extraction of Fossil Fuels in the Warrior Basin, Alabama"

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

Approximately 270,000 cu yd (20[0],000 cu m) of inferred subeconomic auriferous gravel resources were estimated in three Tertiary deposits in the Polk Springs study area (fig. 1 and table 1). These resources are exposed between tuff-breccia and lava flows of the Pliocene Tuscan Formation and Paleozoic or Mesozoic metamorphic rocks which suggests that although no deposits were identified in the other RARE II areas, they may be concealed beneath the Tuscan Formation. Difficulty in choosing drilling targets will make the likelihood of resource discoveries small. The development and production of these deposits would also be prohibitive under current economic conditions due to the thick covering of volcanic rocks. Recent stream gravels of Deer Creek in the Polk Springs study area contain enough gold to attract gold hobbyists; however, the stream gravels do not have sufficient volume to be considered a resource. Potential exists for additional auriferous gravels near the Occidental Mine in the Polk Springs RARE II area.

Uncertainty estimates on coal resources were computed as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Coal Resource Assessment study of more than 60 coal beds and zones in the Appalachian Basin, the Colorado Plateau, the Gulf Coast, the Illinois Basin, and the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. The estimates were made to provide zone specific measures of uncertainty on the historical categories of geological assurance, namely measured, indicated, inferred and hypothetical. Previous estimates were based solely upon distance from a drill hole. These new estimates incorporate site-specific variability and spatial correlation and indicate that there is considerable difference in variability within and between regions. Uncertainty estimates for the measured category are discussed in this paper.

The Automated Breathing Metabolic Simulator (ABMS) is a versatile machine capable of performing almost any physiologically appropriate respiratory simulation. The first ABMS was delivered to the Bureau of Mines by IBM in 1973. Since then efforts have been made to refine the systems and components which make up the ABMS including the Breathing Simulator Module (BSM), Gas Analysis Module (GAM), and Supervisory Controller (SC)-each of which are also capable of stand-alone operation. Since September 1980, Reimers Consultants has been testing and modifying the ABMS and its components in order to improve the equipment and to develop simulation criteria and parameters. Changes have been made to the Phase I Design Plan and Performance Specifications; future improvements based on current experience are recommended; and test results of full scale testing conducted by Reimers Consultants in November 1983 on several types of breathing apparatus are reported and illustrated.

A series of eleven full-scale production blasts has been earned out in a limestone quarry to study the effect of delay interval and its precision on overall blasting performance. The quarry employed ANFO and cartridged aluminized emulsion in 75 mm diameter boreholes with 2.6 m burden and 2.9 m spacing on a 6.7 m bench. Both V-cut and echelon designs were studied. The types of detonators tested were regular short period electric detonators with expanding delay intervals, a more precise pyrotechnic-based electric detonator (EXADET) with a fixed (25 ms) delay interval, and the ultra-high precision electronic delay detonator (EDD) with constant (but site-selectable) delay interval. The various techniques employed to assess the blast results are described, and the performance of the three types of detonators compared. The use of both EXADET and EDD lead to improved blast results in echelon design. Of the three delay intervals (25 ms, 38 ms, and 50 ms) studied, the best results were obtained with EDD with a 38 ms delay interval, which translates into a delay of 38 ms/m of effective burden. The results also show the need for modification of current V-cut delay designs to derive full benefits from these high precision detonators.

ABSTRACT: Strength, deformability and fluid flow properties of rock joints are to a great extent controlled by the surface roughness. The hydraulic conductivity of a rock fracture depends on the aperture distribution, the surface roughness and the contact area, each of which depend on the stresses that act on the fracture plane. However, despite much recent work, a complete understanding of the relationship between void space geometry, contact areas, applied stress, and hydraulic conductivity has yet to be achieved. Moreover, although in situ rock joints are subjected to both normal and shear loading, few studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of shear displacements on fluid flow through a single rock fracture, and which have addressed the issue of flow anisotropy induced by shearing. Experimental flow tests show that with increasing shear displacement, the fracture becomes heterogeneous and anisotropic, and becomes more permeable in the direction parallel to the displacement (Yeo et al., 1998). On the other hand, dry shear tests show that the surface fails in areas facing the shear direction (Grasselli and Egger, 2003). Moreover, the experimental results confirm that the shear strength of rock joints is direction-dependent. In this paper, a three-dimensional morphological description of several a natural fractures that have undergone shear displacement were generated using the Automated Topographic System at the University of Basel. The data analysis method of Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) is used to determine the surface parameters that are known to control the shear strength. Simulations of fluid flow through this fracture, in various directions relative to the direction of shear, are conducted using an FEM flow simulator. The results constitute the most detailed analysis yet undertaken of the relationship between shear displacement, shear strength, and fracture transmissivity. RESUME: La rugosité des joints en roche joue un rôle primaire sur la réponse hydromécanique du massif fracturé. En effet, la conductivité hydraulique des discontinuités en roche est influencée par la rugosité, et par la distribution des ouvertures et des zones de contact, dont chacun dépend de l’effort normal et du cisaillement qui agissent sur la surface du joint. Les essais d'écoulement en laboratoire montrent que si cisaillée, la fracture devient anisotrope, et plus perméable dans la direction parallèle au déplacement (Yeo et al., 1998). D'autre part, les essais de cisaillement indiquent que seules les zones de la surface qui font face à la direction de cisaillement sont impliquées dans le cisaillement (Grasselli et Egger, 2003). D'ailleurs, les résultats expérimentaux confirment que la résistance au cisaillement des joints de roche est dépendante de la direction. Dans cet article, plusieurs fractures en roche ont été analysées en utilisant un système de mesure topographique à l'Université de Bâle. Die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit einer Kluft hängt von der Verteilung der Rissbreiten, der Oberflächenrauhigkeit und den Kontaktflächen ab, die ihrerseits von dem auf die Bruchfläche wirkenden Druck beeinflusst werden. Obgleich in letzter Zeit viel in dieser Richtung geforscht wurde, kann der Zusammenhang zwischen Porenraumgeometrie, Kontaktflächen, wirkendem Druck und hydraulischer Leitfähigkeit noch nicht vollständig erklärt werden. Obwohl Klüfte in situ sowohl Normal- als auch Schubspannungen ausgesetzt sind, wurde der Einfluss von Scherverschiebungen auf den Kluftwasserfluss und die daraus resultierende Fliessanisotropie in einer einzelnen Kluft bisher kaum untersucht. Experimentelle Untersuchungen des Durchflusses zeigen, dass die Kluft für größer werdende Scherverschiebungen heterogen und anisotrop wird wobei die Permeabilität parallel zur Verschiebungsrichtung ansteigt (Yeo et al., 1998). Andererseits zeigen trockene Scherversuche, dass die Oberfläche an Stellen versagt, die gegen die Verschiebungsrichtung anstehen (Grasselli und Egger, 2003). Des weiteren bestätigen die experimentellen Ergebnisse eine Richtungsabhängigkeit der Kluftscherfestigkeit. In diesem Artikel wird eine dreidimensionale morphologische Beschreibung mehrerer natürlicher, durch Scherspannungen verschobener Klüfte vorgestellt, die vom Automated Topographic System der Universität von Basel erstellt wurde. Das von Grasselli (Grasselli et al., 2002a) entwickelte Datenanalyseverfahren wird zur Feststellung der die Scherfestigkeit bestimmenden Oberflächenparameter herangezogen. Mittels einer FEM-Simulation wird der Durchfluss durch eine solche Kluft in verschiedenen Richtungen simuliert. Die Ergebnisse stellen die bisher ausführlichste Analyse des Zusammenhangs zwischen Scherverschiebung, Scherfestigkeit und Durchlässigkeit (Transmissivität) einer Kluft dar.

Continued low prices and restricted markets for crude oil discouraged drilling activity in Illinois oil fields during 1933. Only 36 wells were completed in the state, the smallest number since 1904, and of these the majority were scattered wildcat wells, only 10 having been drilled in producing fields (Table 2). Production was curtailed approximately 40 per cent for the first half of the year. During July, August, and the early part of September there was no restriction on production. On Sept. 8, under the "code of fair competition for the petroleum industry," the quota of allowable production for Illinois was fixed at 12,000 bbl. per day. The state's production in 1933 was 9 per cent less than in 1932. What it would have been had there been no curtailment of production and if economic conditions had permitted a normal amount of cleaning out and repairs to wells, it is not possible to estimate, but it would no doubt have been considerably more than the actual figure. No new pools or new producing horizons were discovered in 1933, but the deepening of a Robinson sand well in Crawford County to the McClosky "sand" horizon (St. Genevieve limestone of the Lower Mississippian) resulted in a production of 3 bbl. per day (Fred Patchel, Savilla Shipman No. 5, NE. 1/4, SW. 1/4, sec. 26, T.6N., R.l3W., deepened from 1122 to 1388 ft., to be tested to the McClosky horizon, and, owing to the rapid variations in porosity within short distances, as shown in the Lawrence County field to the south, one test may not be considered as proving or condemning any large area. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1933, calculated from the posted prices as published in the Oil and Gas Journal and Oil Weekly, was $0.862 per barrel. This compares with a calculated average price of $1.032 in 1932 and 0.852 in 1931. The total value of Illinois crude oil produced in 1933 obtained by multiplying the average price (0.862) by the total production (4,227,000 bbl.) was $3,643,674. Of the 26 wildcat wells drilled in 1933, only one was drilled on known favorable structure. An environmental management system (EMS) is a key part of a company?s environmental stewardship. Procedures and practices to continually improve environmental performance can provide great benefits in operating the company. Managing site environmental quality data is a key component of this. An environmental data management system (EDMS) is an important element of the EMS for mining and other projects, providing project staff with the information that they need to make decisions that can have a significant impact on public health. Improvements in computers, data communications, and transfer formats have made it much easier to implement an integrated EDMS program for gathering, managing, selecting, and displaying data from the field and the lab. Software now lets users define sampling plans, create files for field data entry, and print Chains of Custody. Laptop and handheld computers facilitate field data entry and may provide automated communication back to the office. Most labs can now create usable electronic data deliverables. QC checks and limit comparisons can be largely automated. The result is organized data that can be efficiently used for reporting, graphing, and mapping, to better understand project issues.

This paper presents the details and results of a preliminary investigation into the response of borehole pressure cells (BPCs) in soft coal. Two parallel approaches, laboratory calibration and nonlinear finite element simulation, were adopted for deter- mining the BPC K-factor, which was defined as the ratio of cell pressure change to the corresponding change in external pressure. Results from both the laboratory calibration and the nonlinear finite element simulation revealed a nonlinear response of cell internal fluid pressure to external loading. The K-fact& also is shown to increase with increasing setting pressure and decreasing medium modulus. -Depending on the setting pressure, the K-factor for coal having a Young's modulus of 1.6 x lo5 psi ranges from nearly 1.2 at 2,000 psi of external pressure to 1.485 at 8,400 psi of external pressure. The improved under- standing of BPC behavior leads to the more accurate calculation of BPC K-factor in coal which significantly improves the correlation between pillar pressures measured in underground coal mines and those predicted by nonlinear finite element simulations of these pillars.

Abstract - Ore reserve estimation, based on sparse drill hole data, was conducted for a placer gold property in Nome, Alaska. A problem with sparse data is that random subdivision of the data into modelling and evaluation subsets (as is commonly done) becomes a problem, as random selection may result in biased/skewed subsets. Therefore, a technique that combined data segmentation with genetic algorithms (GA) was applied to divide the samples into three equivalent subsets: training, validation and testing. Data segmentation was done on the basis of the distribution of gold values. Neural network and a variety of kriging techniques were used to estimate gold grades. A multi-layer feed forward neural network along with "early/quick stop" training was used for neural network modelling. A comparative evaluation of kriging and neural network methods was then performed. The results revealed that neural network was generally superior to the kriging techniques for gold grade estimation in the Nome deposit.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district's office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM's Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease.
