Scaling of rockpasses was problematic at Tau Lekoa Mine prior to production commencing in 1991. High horizontal stress levels relative to the host rock mass strength have been instrumental in causing the observed scaling. Scaling has been more pronounced in the deeper rockpasses and these are monitored regularly. Rehabilitation of one of the reef passes and one of the waste passes was required in the period 1999 to 2001. This paper describes the extent of the problems experienced to date as well as the rehabilitation completed.

The Porgera Gold Mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, has produced over 5 million ounces of Au, since its opening in late 1990. The deposit is located within Upper Cretaceous Papuan Platform sediments approximately 25 km south of the Lagaip Fault, and is spatially and temporally associated with the 6 Ma alkaline Porgera Intrusive Complex.

This paper is concerned with mineral policy in Ireland and how it might be improved to encourage more exploration and investment in mining in the country. The approach is to first outline the main desirable characteristics of a comprehensive national mineral policy document. This aspirational document is then used to assess the current regulatory, legislative and fiscal frameworks for mining in Ireland. The analysis also contains a brief account of the history, structure and characteristics of the mining industry in Ireland. The main focus of the paper is to identify those aspects of the existing framework that erode Ireland’s attractiveness to mineral investment and to suggest policy improvements.

As the level of technology applied in the electrical measurement, control, and display portions of mine hoist systems continues to advance, the issues and concerns associated with the ramifications of the application of microprocessor technology on the safety-related aspects of these systems become paramount. This report, in part tutorial, addresses several aspects of these concerns. Beginning with discussions of microprocessor-based system architectures, the report addresses some existing and anticipated uses of this technology in mine hoist systems and discusses safety related considerations associated with the areas of data derivation; control and display panels; and system reliability issues. The report concludes with electrical maintenance and inspection considerations associated with the safety assurance of microprocessor based mine hoist systems.

As part of an initiative to improve value in mining, CEMI is developing a handbook on best practice in mine design. Various formats were examined, and of these, the wiki was selected as being most suitable. Being web-based, its global reach and capability of being continuously updated allows the wiki to evolve as new knowledge is generated, and to capture the diversity of experience of practitioners in the mining industry. While wikis have many advantages in terms of organizing content and searching, their ability to be edited by users is often seen as a negative characteristic for quality control. To ensure reliability of information content, author attribution, specific authorship models, and a peer review process have been implemented, in addition to the standard version tracking capability of wikis. The first phase of the project concentrates on topics related to underground hard rock mine design. The scope will be expanded to cover other aspects of mining as the project matures. Strategic partnerships with various organizations, such as the CIM, and CANMET, are being formed to provide a wide range of seed material to stimulate growth of the site. www.minedesignwiki.org

The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

The oxidation of structural materials at high temperatures in gas-cooled systems can be greatly retarded by the addition of small amounts of hydrogen to the inert coolant. In experimental equipment for gasifying coal with heat transferred by helium, the oxidation of graphite and metals (molybdenum, tungsten, and certain stainless steels) by trace impurities in the coolant helium was virtually eliminated by adding 0.1 to 1.0 percent hydrogen. The reaction of hydrogen with praphite does not preclude its use to retard oxidation; at 2,400° F. only 0.2 pound of graphite per square foot per year is lost for each percent of hydrogen in the helium. The addition of hydrogen appeared to prevent the mass transfer of carbon often associated with oxidation of graphite, without causing noticeable embrittlement of stainless steels and molybdenum or other damaging effects. This method has been tested in precision gas-recycle systems and applied successfully for more than a year in a pilot-scale unit operating at 250 pounds per square inch gage and 2,400° F. It is now used routinely and can be applied to many gas-cooled systems operating at high temperatures.

Suite à la publication du « Guide sur la gestion des parcs à résidus miniers » en septembre 1998, les membres de l?industrie minière ont appliqué les éléments de gestion du Guide, permettant ainsi une amélioration continue des opérations. En février 2000, l?industrie minière a indiqué le besoin d?établir des lignes directives plus spécifiques pour l?opération sécuritaire des parcs à résidus. Dans cette optique, l?Association Minière Canadienne a publié, en septembre 2002, un Guide pour l?exploitation, l?entretien et la surveillance (EES) des parcs à résidus miniers. Suite au développement du Guide et à son application sur plusieurs sites miniers, il apparaît que la mise en oeuvre d?un Manuel ESS des parcs à résidus miniers permet : ? d?établir les responsabilités des intervenants; ? de s?assurer que les critères d?opération sont appliqués; ? de mettre en oeuvre le plan de déposition des résidus et de gestion de l?eau; ? de rencontrer les normes et exigences environnementales; ? de définir un programme d?entretien et de surveillance des ouvrages; ? d?identifier les risques et de mettre en oeuvre un plan d?intervention d?urgence; de démontrer une opération diligente.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd. (Process Engineering) degree* The recovery of cobalt and copper from waste slag was studied in a plasma DC-arc furnace in reducing conditions. Three fluxes, CaO,CaF2, and TiO2, were investigated for their influence on selective recovery of cobalt into an iron-rich alloy. A further investigation on the influence of furnace power on the reduction of slag to recover cobalt to the alloy showed that a change in power setting had an unexpected effect on the recovery of metals to the alloy, in that selectivity of base metal recovery over iron recovery decreased at an increased power level. The predevelopment and preparation of a total infrastructure in a deep level mining environment, prior to the shaft system being commissioned has major advantages. This paper intends to indicate these advantages and outline an understanding of the disadvantages. These benefits can be classified in three basic groups: the financial and timing advantages, a knowledge of the ore body and the development of required technology to meet the design parameters. The required technology in many aspects was still to be developed prior to successful application. Stemming from the technological evolution are some secondary advantages which will be described in each of the groups. Safety and health considerations and some practicalities made some of the new technology redundant prior to the actual application. In each case the actual achievements and the anticipated benefits will be indicated to allow the reader to distinguish clearly between planned and actual achieved advantages.

One of the ways of trauma and occupational diseases level reduction is noted to be the improvement of the labour protection measures planning. As an indicator for prospective trends determination in the labour protection planning improvement sphere economic risk has been proposed to be used. The trauma and occupational diseases analysis based on the correlative and regressive methods has been carried out for the “Vorgashorskaya” mine of Pechora coal basin. Trauma and occupational diseases occurrences frequency and economic losses value have been estimated. In June, 1,334 underground construction and tunneling professionals gathered in Toronto, Ontario for the 2007 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). This biennial event, sponsored by SME, is one of the global underground construction industry?s major events. And this year?s RETC was the first one that included the new Underground Construction Association. [ ] (UCA) of SME. In addition, the conference?s exhibit attracted 125 equipment and service providers. The next Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference is set for June 14-17, 2009 at Caesar?s Palace, Las Vegas, NV.

The closure of the only professional mining school in New Zealand will mean that the minerals industry will have to explore other options to fill their mining professional positions. Globally mining is not seen as an attractive career option for young people and recruitment into mining courses is at a low level. Yet industry demands ever increasing competencies with respect to technology, environmental issues and legislation. This paper addresses this issue by first discussing the attributes required of graduate mining professionals. It then looks at alternative ways on how these can be met internationally and on the home front.

The Old Hickory heavy mineral ore body, which lies within the Fall Zone of south central Virginia, has been mined since 1997. There are many differences in this deposit when compared to humate-laden mineral sands mines of southern Georgia and Florida. These differences include an abundance of kaolin-rich clayey sands, highly concentrated and iron-colored heavy mineral sand units, and a base of mineralization that is undulating. For these reasons, the selective approach of dry mining with track excavators is ideal. Grade control in this deposit uses traditional panning techniques and requires an intimate working knowledge of near-by drilling data. Mine geologists train equipment operators to recognize the base of mineralization by such characteristics as a stark color change, significant changes in grain size, and/or considerable, recognizable shifts in the concentration of heavy minerals. The regular pattern of mine site drilling does not always prepare the geologist and digging crews for occurrences of near-vertical contacts between the saprolite basement and the ore sands. These deformed areas, combined with undulating and pinching ore zones, require close monitoring and flexibility by the geologist and the mine operators.
