This report describes dredging and processing of sand and gravel from a glacial-fluvial deposit in the Raccoon River valley near West Des Moines, Iowa. Preliminary cleaning and separation of the sand and gravel at the dredge site with subsequent transportation to separate plants and the production and disposal of the various grades of aggregate material are also described. The geology of the deposit is summarized. A tabulated summary of costs in units of labor, power, and supplies is included.

The report recommends criteria for the design of safe surface mine haulage roads. Information relevant to road design at surface mine sites delineates vertical and horizontal alignment; subbase and surface materials; drainage; cross-slope, superelevation; runaway vehicle protection; and road and vehicle maintenance criteria. An appendix Is included which details the study methods used in compiling the final report information. A bibliography following the main text lists literature referenced for the report data and which is available as a valuable tool for use by individuals involved in haul road design.

Longwall mining of thin shallow coal seams utilizing open pits is technically feasible. The thinnest coal seam which can be mined using available technology is 34 inches. The capital expenditure for a 1,000,000 ton per year operation is $15,494,000, and the projected rate of return is 5 percent. Similar statistics for a conventional area surface mine are S18,937,000 capital and 14 percent rate of return. The longwall surface mining method disturbs 63 acres of land per 1,000,000 tons, and the conventional area surface mine disturbs 198 acres A significant bibliography of the technology involved is included.

The proper transfer of roof loads from props and bolts to ribs and pillars can result in appreciable savings. The author shows how to plan such load reduction in underground mines. For openings in bedded rocks, analyzed by simple beam theory, it has been shown that roof loads can be shifted from one support to another.&apos; This transfer is effected by controlling the relative deflection of adjacent supports. If this action is used to reduce loads in the props or bolts and increase them in the ribs or pillars, it could be productive of economies averaging 30 pct. Such savings can be realized by: 1) using smaller artifical supports such as props and bolts, and 2) increasing loads in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. Since the rib is relatively load-insensitive, it provides a natural load sink. However, caution must be used in applying such permissive deflections, for while the supports are being handled properly, the stresses in the roof itself are very sensitive to such manipulations.1 An underground opening overlain by a relatively thin immediate roof, and a thick main roof, is usually laid out as shown in Fig. 1. The total open span (T) between pillars or ribs is calculated on the basis of the main roof, and the secondary spans (L) on the basis of the immediate roof, so that a complete accounting of the existing loads is made. For this purpose the immediate roof is treated as a uniformly loaded continous beam, which is an indeterminate structure as shown in Fig. 2(A). The term systematic supports places the following two restrictions on the continuous beam: 1) Spans between all supports are equal: uniformity of spans. 2) Loads on all supports (excepting ribs) are equal: uniformity of supports. The usual mode of analysis of such a structure by beam theory is to divide it up into a series of simply supported beams with end moments as shown in Fig. 2(B)2 The problem now is to transfer a maximum roof load to the rib from the span immediately adjacent to it by permitting its support to deflect, and yet not fail the roof. Once this has been done, the load can be equalized on all other supports by permitting further degrees of relative deflection. It is necessary, therefore, to determine an expression for the constant load on each support, and the required deflections, in terms of properties of the roof. Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

Two Hg-Au occurrences west of Bangko, Sumatra occur within the West Sumatra Permian Volcanic Plutonic Arc. The Melipun Hg-Au occurrence was exploited in the past and mineralisation occurs within a hydrothermally altered cupola of a buried intrusion. The Salak Hg-Au occurrence occurs within the outcrop of the Dusunbaru pluton, likely within the remnants of a caldera in which hydrothermal mineralisation was developed. Both occurrences formed late in the history of the volcanic arc, probably between the Triassic and early Jurassic. The Melipun occurrence may have potential at depth, but that at Salak is small and lies within the area of a proposed Geopark.CITATION:Crow, M J, van Waveren, I M and Hasibuan, F, 2015. Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sublayer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

The worldwide budget for non fuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 27 percent in 2003 from the 2002 budget, according to the Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes after five years of declining spending for mineral exploration. For the first time in several years, all regional exploration budget estimates for 2003 as defined by MEG would increase from similar 2002 estimates. However, MEG included 193 more companies in its 2003 survey than in 2002. As with previous MEG survey reports, estimates reflect anticipated expenditures rather than actual dollars spent. Caution, therefore, must be taken when comparing 2002 and2003 estimates or evaluating the magnitude of regional changes from year to year. Sample variations and currency exchange rates may influence year-to-year variations of MEG data. Even so, it is likely that the general climate of improved metal prices in 2003 encouraged companies that had previously left the mineral exploration sector or reduced their exploration activity to once again focus on minerals exploration or increase exploration activity and budgets.

Analyses of statistical data indicate that haulage accidents are one of the largest sources of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines, and that the rate of accidents in transportation has been increasing during the past few years. These previous analyses were performed by correlating accident or fatality data at a rather high level of miner activity. In this present investigation, underground surveys were made by observing conditions and activities in some detail at a rather low level of activity in an attempt to understand factors contributing to hazards in the specific situations observed. The aim of the current study was to derive preventive measures that might obviate the hazardous conditions and unsafe acts observed; and, following this, to provide recommendations for additional research and development to reduce accident potential in underground transportation. The major project tasks are diagrammed together with the task outputs in figure 1-1. Initially, a preliminary study of ell underground haulage operations was performed in order to establish the kinds of data needed and to provide the rationale leading to the data requirement. At the same time, the various types of haulage equipment used for each operation were defined. A preliminary analysis of each type of haulage operation was performed in order to establish the sequence of tasks required to operate haulage equipment. These tasks were transferred directly onto observation forms, and were used in developing interview forms. In parallel with the task analysis, a review was made of accidents and hazards that might occur during each type of operation.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine is an epithermal gold deposit located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Surface operations are continuing along with an expansion for an onsite mill to take place in the next couple of years. The surface pit is currently progressing downward from an oxidized zone into a transitional, more sulfide/ telluride-rich zone. Gold mineralization includes native gold, electrum, and tellurides. Cyanide heap leaching is the recovery process for the oxidized ore with the sulfide/telluride-rich ore to be processed at the new onsite mill. Ore characterization prior to mining is vital when there are two possible recovery processes. This characterization is dependent on geometallurgy. To identify the causes of the variability, multiple parameters are analyzed and assayed. These parameters are measured by a variety of analytical testwork. The analytical testwork provides measurements for the desired parameters. Geometallurgical models are developed for the parameters per recovery process, so estimations can be inserted into the resource model to optimize operations and recoveries.

Suddenly, mining has been thrust into the limelight. It has a large image that casts its shadow over New Zealand. Is it any wonder that resistance has heightened and that an almost unprepared populous is currently struggling to protect the very land they hold dear. Next to the atomic bomb, mining has the demonstrated power to massively change the land and its side effects can pollute many miles beyond the operation. During the past year, New Zealand concern over the possible effects of the mining proposals has become acute. This was specially so in the areas of special environmental quality, such as the Coromandel, and here a very unhappy situation has arisen.

The 24th annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 76 producers in 20 States reported commercial production of peat in 1957. In addition to the States that reported production in 1956, Colorado, Idaho, and Wisconsin produced peat in 1957 Forty-four producers reported humus production; 21, reed-sedge peat; and 22, moss peat production. This total exceeds the number of active plants but several producers recovered more than one type of peat. Fifty percent of the total production was reported as reed-sedge peat, 36 percent as humus, and 14 percent as moss peat. About one-sixth of the total production was raw peat, with no preparation other than being air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, and/or kiln drying.

An Atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between hydrophobic silica surfaces. The measurements were conducted in the presence and absence of Cu(II)species in solution to study the effects of the cation adsorption on the hydrophobic force. The results obtained in the absence of the Cu (II)species showed that the hydrophobic force does not change with pH, while the electrostatic repulsive force changes substantially with pH. In the presence of the Cu(II) species, the hydrophobic force begins to decrease at a pH where Cu2+ions are hydrolyzed, indicating that the first hydrolysis product (i.e., CuOH+ions) are the species adsorbing on the surface of the hydrophobic silica. The results of the surface force measurements were used to develop a model for the adsorption of the hydrolysis product of Cu(II) species on the hydrophobic silica.

The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative&apos; to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners of tunneling and underground construction gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) to learn from their peers about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique fleld. Industry experts from around the world highlight their most recent projects and share real-world experiences. They also share with their colleagues new technologies and methodologies that attendees can take home to their respective projects. The 2013 RETC was held June 23-26 in Washing-ton, D.C., itself home to several major tunneling and underground construction projects. The conference is sponsored by SME. Attendance was 1,384 professionals. The accompanying exhibit hosted 159 companies in 188 booths. A few of the topics covered in the technical sessions dealt with caverns and large spans, contracting practices, tunnel linings, design and planning, geotechnical considerations and instrumentation. The conference was preceded by four short courses, all well attended. They were ?Grouting in Underground Construction,? ?Tunnel Lining Design,? ?Microtunneling Application? and ?Risk, Uncertainty and Hard Decisions.? In addition, a sold-out field trip to D.C. Water?s Blue Plains Tunnel took place following the conference. The Blue Plains Tunnel is part of the agency?s Clean Rivers Project. Also during the meeting, three students each received $5,000 scholarships from the UCA of SME, while another three students each received $2,500 scholarships from RETC (See page 53).

Primarily ferrochrome is used to introduce chromium into steels and alloys. Chromium enhances hardness, hardenability, corrosion, abrasion and wear resistance of the steel. High carbon ferrochrome is one the cheapest sources of chromium, which finds large consumption in foundries and steel plants. However, carbon leads to problems viz. weld decay and sensitization of steels at elevated temperature causing catastrophic failure. Thus high carbon ferrochrome which otherwise enjoys financial edge over its low carbon grade is not suitable for final alloying or adjustment of chromium content. Subsequently, its addition burdens a steel maker. Hence, metallurgists around the globe have researched on finding out suitable technique for refining of ferrochrome. Traditional production methods of low carbon ferrochrome have drawbacks i.e. high refractory consumption, losses of chromium in slag and fumes etc-. Later these were overcome by adopting relatively new methods namely, metallothermic reduction, triplex process, vacuum technique to directly produce extra low carbon ferrochrome.
