In the USA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) does a lot of work and has provided news of interesting new developments. Marcia L. Harris describes an ?Explosibility Meter: ?In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. Federal [US] regulations require 65% and 80% incombustible content in samples taken in intake airways and return airways, respectively, assuming a nominal coal dust size of 20% minus 200 mesh. The Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM), a hand-held instrument developed by NIOSH uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture.? The CDEM is now commercially available. It provides real-time results during rock dust surveys instead of waiting weeks for laboratory results1. ?With real-time results, the potential for a disaster can be mitigated immediately. The CDEM displays the percent incombustible content as well as a colour indicating the relative explosibility of the coal and rock dust mixture. A red read-out indicates that more incombustible material is required to inert the coal and rock dust sample, while a green read-out indicates that the dust sample is sufficiently inert. When the mixture is marginally explosible, a yellow read-out is indicated. The red-yellow-green output depends upon the particle size distribution of the rock and coal dust mixture with the finer size fraction being more explosible.?

Nodular piles is to be piles provided with several nodular projections along the pile shaft, as shown in Fig. 1. Nodular piles are usually installed through either driving method with hammer or preboring method. This paper presents that the bearing capacity installed through each method is considerably higher than that of cylindrical pile without nodules. This paper also proposes the statistically analyzed unique formulae of the bearing capacity of nodular piles.

This report contains the practical application of a computer program for the simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires and other emergencies on five hardrock mines. The introduction describes the need for such a program, its basic features, and the range of its applicability which is mainly a function of the available ventilation data. The second chapter discusses program modifications, whose necessity or desirability was, during the application, discovered. The following five chapters, which comprise the major portion of the report, give the detailed description of the program application on the five mines. For every one of the selected mines, the ventilation system, the source of the used ventilation data and their preparation for computer simulations are outlined. Based on data for the airflow distribution solely, fumes concentrations in the mines are calculated for several assumed fire locations. Based on data for airflow and pressure distributions, ventilation disturbances caused by fires as well as the resulting fumes concentrations and temperatures are determined. The consequences for escape routes and the possible means to keep them free of fumes are discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the program, other contaminant sources and other potentially dangerous ventilation factors, like fan failures and changed surface temperatures, are simulated also. The results of the calculations have been entered into ventilation plans which makes them easier to scrutinize. All significant computer printouts have been attached.

This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

The resultant load vector is the representation of the forces applied to a longwall roof support element by caving strata into a single, quantifiable measure of support resistance. The relatively complex kinematics of the shield support prohibit a determination of support resistance simply by summation of leg forces. A method is being investigated by the Bureau of Nines to determine the resultant load vector by instrumenting supports with pressure transducers and strain gages to measure leg, canopy capsule, and lemnisoate link forces. This concept has been laboratory tested in the Bureau's Nine Roof Simulator. Functional relationships among variables have been assessed, and confidence intervals have been established for prediction of the resultant load vector parameters.

Building on earlier work, an analysis relevant to international (Australasian) minerals trade is developed which accounts for both the impetus of globalization and national reaction or protection. At the firm level, integrated multinationals are contrasted with trade service providers. At the industry level tariff and, particularly, such barriers as quotas, standards, labor and environmental issues are explored. Specific areas examined include: location of both inventories and processing, sources of finance and currency risk, shipping availability and terms as related to processing level, residuals management or environmental controls, and “fair” labor standards. Intraregional rather than global trade is currently most likely.

The successful expansion of crude oil production begun in late 1977, led to promising development of the nonfuel minerals sector. Although actual production of nonfuel minerals was limited both in variety and in percentage of output on a world scale, the potential for expansion with a rapidly developing infrastructure was significant. The energy base was expanding with construction of two new hydroelectric powerplants in addition to the existing plant near Edea. The Song Loulou plant will have a 240-megawatt capacity, and a hydroelectric plant under construction in the northern part of the country by mainland China will have 72 megawatts of installed capacity. Inflation of between 15% and 20% resulted in a real gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.8 billion2 in fiscal year 1980 (July 31 to June 1), up 6% from that of the previous fiscal year. Petroleum became the leading export item in terms of value, surpassing coffee and cocoa exports. Mineral exports as a whole increased eightfold in value, mainly because of oil sales. Oil exports also caused a reduction in the trade deficit by nearly one-third, and the Government expected its 1980-81 budget to be balanced at $1.17 billion. The Port of Douala accounted for about 8 million tons of cargo, or 93% of total maritime traffic for Cameroon. Expansion plans for the port call for an initial increase to 5 million tons, and a cargo handling capacity of 7.5 million tons in 1985 and 10 million tons by 1990. The Port of Victoria will gain importance with the startup of an oil refinery. The country's third seaport at Kribi was used solely for timber shipments, and capacity at the Port was to triple by 1981. The Government operated its own shipping line with six oceangoing freighters. France was the dominant trading partner, accounting for 25%

A new preparation scheme for a difficult-to-float coking coal from the Kailuan Mine, Tangshan, China was investigated. The results showed that grinding followed by column flotation was beneficial for obtaining products with low ash content. The positive effect of grinding on the coal floatability is attributed to the liberation of intergrowths and coal surface improvement. Tests indicated that 10 minutes was the optimum grinding time, and over grinding resulted in a deterioration in flotation performance. With a grinding time of 10 minutes, conventional flotation had potential to yield a product with around 12.42% ash content and 69.15% combustible recovery. Column flotation can reduce the product ash content to 11.15%and increase combustible recovery to 74.47%. Consistently better flotation results reveal that column flotation is more efficient than conventional flotation for such fines.

This report deals exclusively with roof-fall accidents that occurred during 1955 and 1956 in both anthracite and bituminous-coal mines throughout the United States. The report stems from a cooperative study conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the Roof-Control Committee of the Coal-Mining Section, National Safety Council. The study includes an analysis of individual accident reports, sets forth the measurable factors, and compares such factors with a representative sample of average data from 39 anthracite mines and 117 bituminous mines (appendixes A and B). Particular emphasis is placed on fatal roof-fall accidents with respect to their causes, locations, and the methods of support used at the point of occurrence. INTRODUCTION The purpose of the report is to classify all measurable details of the occurrences of roof-fall fatalities so that the material presented will assist those promoting safety and will serve as a manual for those whose principal duty is inspection of mines.

In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

Rock property data is needed over a wide range of parameters for the optimum execution of rapid excavation research. Eight rock types were chosen by the Bureau of Mines for a standard rock suite for such research. Large rock blocks were quarried and the standard physical and mechanical properties measured and documented. The eight rock types that comprise the rock suite are Barre Granite, Berea Sandstone, Dresser basalt, Holston Limestone, Salem Lime-stone, Sioux Quartzite, St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, and Westerly Granite. Geologic, petrographic, physical-property, and mechanical-property test data are reported for each rock type. The information is the first step in the building of a comprehensive property listing for the eight rock types. A limited number of rock cubes are available from the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Mining Research Center for use by researchers to broaden the information available on the suite.

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well-known that there are largo deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stock piled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines. This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3506, Manganese Investigations 1. Concentration of Manganese Ores from the Drum Mountain District, Utah, by S. R. Zimmerley, J. D. Vincent, and C. H. Schack. Other reports will be published as the work progresses.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., has developed a continuous-recording methanometer utilizing a catalytic combustion detector. The methanometer, which is presently operating at 22 exhaust fans at 14 mines in the Eastern coalfields, is reliable and simple to install, operate, and maintain. The instrument and the details of its installation and calibration are described. Analytical data obtained by infrared spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph are presented to substantiate its re liability.

You’ve probably heard the old expression, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” But the adage doesn’t seem to hold much water when it comes to making a telephone call on the road. Thirty years ago, a “powder hound” had to stop his 2-wheel drive vehicle at either a roadside diner or a telephone booth to make a call using a public telephone. But, fast-forward to 2007, and a contemporary “explosives engineer” driving his or her 4-wheel drive vehicle simply makes a call “on-the-fly.” The fundamental difference between these two eras is the result of the introduction and the proliferation of cellular or wireless technology. On the one hand, this fundamental difference is much welcomed in the form of personal and business conveniences; and improved productivity. On the other hand, this fundamental difference creates a new set of un-welcomed conditions causing a potential “digital danger.”

In this study, the reduction behaviours of MnO and SiO2containing slags by solid carbonaceous materials was investigated in both small and larger-scale laboratory experiments. Five types of carbonaceous material were investigated: 2 graphites, industrial coke, anthracite and eucalyptus charcoal. The effects of the reductant type/properties on the reduction kinetics, metal composition and metal yield, have been quantified. Results show that the reduction rate is highly dependant on the type of carbon used. It was found that the reductant type significantly influenced the SiO2reduction while it did not seem to have a large effect on the MnO reduction. This may be due to the different CO2and SiO reactivities of the materials.

The aim of this paper is the construction of models of systems with ionic and ionic-covalent bonds (molten salts) using experimental diffraction data and the calculation of their structure and thermodynamic and transport properties. Modelling was performed using algorithm BELION, in which the non-coulomb part of interaction potential between ions in the model was determined by the method of iterative simulation which targeted agreement between calculated and experimental partial pair correlation functions (PPCFs). The ionic charges in salts, which can be fractional, were determined by minimization of internal energy. In this paper, the algorithm BELION is applied for chlorides of alkaline-earth metals. Pair potentials, PPCFs, atomization energies, self-diffusion coefficients and electric conductivity are calculated. The charge of alkaline-earth metals was in the range of 2.0-2.1, slightly increasing from Mg to Ba. Partial pair correlation functions and atomization energies of models agree well with experimental data for MgCl2, SrCl2and BaCl2. "This paper examines the development of two new selective flocculation techniques for recovering KCI values from low grade carnallite potash ore.Direct recovery of KCI was achieved using one of two mid-range molecular weight polymers, one non-ionic and the other strongly cationic, in conjunction with the same selective anionic dispersant. From initial response studies on pure minerals and selective flocculation tests on synthetic mixtures, investigations were extended to recover KCI values from a natural carnallite potash ore. A single-stage process achieved products grading up to 61.3% KCI at recoveries up to 85.4% for the cationic flocculant suite and up to 64.8% KCI with recoveries as high as 90.3% for the non-ionic flocculant suite, with dispersant and flocculant dosages of 150-250gr1 and 10-75gr1, respectively. These results clearly demonstrate not only the feasibility of treating such problematic ores at low reagent dosages, but also the potential elimination of desliming prior to froth flotation.The experimental results presented are considered in terms of the reagent adsorption phenomena present in the system and various aspects of floe formation and cleaning.IntroductionAs high-grade sylvinite potash ores become scarce, lower grade sylvinite and carnallite potash ores are becoming more attractive. However, these ores often contain large amounts (up to 15% by weight) of water-insoluble slimes which must be removed prior to KC! flotation, owing to their high adsorptive capacity for the amine collectors used. The slimes are generally removed by scrubbing followed by hydroclassification and any residual material not eliminated is blinded with reagents such as guar gum or starch to inhibit interference in subsequent KC1 flotation.An alternative approach used commercially in Canada by Agrium Inc. involves water-insoluble slimes flotation prior to KC! flotation. In this process, the slimes are selectively flocculated and then separated by froth flotation. Losses of KC! to the slimes product and associated brine requirements are both reported to be less than those encountered in conventional desliming, but the technique is somewhat limited in its application at present."

When bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag may be incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not inixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below. In a foundry melting 50,000 to 80,000 Ib. of bronze per day, a week's accumulation of furnace slag and ladle skimmings amounted to 16,500 1b.—over three times as much as the foundry superintendent estimated before the accumulation was made. The Mission Valley Viaduct is located in San Diego, California. This structure is the intersection of Interstate 8 and 805. The project consists of the main viaduct, 8 connecting ramps, and one highway overpass. This job was originally built back in the 70's. After the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, Caltrans began an aggressive program to seismic retrofit all of its bridges throughout the state. Most retrofit designs required major upgrades to the existing footings. These footing upgrades consisted of either driven or drilled shaft piling. The existing footings of the Mission Valley interchange were supported on driven H pile. The soils throughout the site were dense sands and gravels, cobbles, occasional boulders with a dense sandstone bearing strata, which varied through out the site. It was this sandstone strata that the engineers designed their pile tips around. High ground water in sandy soils created a high probability of liquefaction in all of the upper stratas.
