I. INTRODUCTION The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is a regional water and sewerage authority which provides wholesale water and sewer services to the Metropolitan Boston area. The MWRA was created by the Massachusetts Legislature as an independent authority in 1985 following the filing of a lawsuit in federal court to correct the pollution of Boston Harbor resulting from inadequate and inadequately maintained sewerage facilities. Immediately upon its creation, the MWRA began to tackle treatment plant issues, including addressing the need for a secondary treatment plant, planning for ceasing ocean discharging of sludge, and making interim repairs to the existing, antiquated treatment plants. The MWRA's initial activities led to a court-ordered schedule for construction of a single new primary and secondary treatment facility, for development of sludge management plan focussed principally on reuse, and for completion of a short term program of repairs to existing facilities. Once a schedule for completing these activities had been negotiated, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a plaintiff in the federal court case, asked that the MWRA take "responsibility" for controlling discharges from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) within its service area. Pumice and volcanic cinder are volcanic rocks characterized by a cellular structure. They are formed as gases (primarily water) dissolved in molten rock, or magma, exsolve to generate a froth that cools and solidifies into rigid foam. The cells or bubbles are referred to as vesicles and they range in size from a few thousandth of a millimeter to several centimeters. Due to their vesicular character, both pumice and cinder have lower density and higher porosity than most other rock types, and, as the vesicle walls are broken, sharp cutting edges are continually generated. These properties are the basis for their commercial value as lightweight aggregates, insulators, absorbents, and abrasives. There is a certain imprecision in the terminology applied to volcanic products, reflecting to varying degrees the diversity of volcanic rocks, the relative youth of volcanology as a distinct field of study, and customs and practices of commercial trade. In general terms, pumice is light colored (white, gray, pink, pale yellow, or brown) and highly vesicular, usually with vesicle walls that are visibly glassy. Many pumice fragments are light enough to float on water. Pumice is readily cut by steel tools and some can be crushed by hand. Individual pumice fragments may range from 1 or 2 m in one dimension to c1 mm. Commercially, finer fragments are called pumicite or volcanic ash. In volcanology the term ash refers to any fragment c2 mm in size regardless of its composition. Cinder, or scoria, is dark colored (black, red, brown) with thick vesicle walls that appear dull or stony and that may exhibit iridescence. Cinder typically is heavier than pumice and has a higher crushing strength. In volcanology the term scoria refers to dark vesicular material throughout a wide size range while it is common commercial practice to use scoria for larger fragments (usually greater than 2.5 cm) and cinder for smaller fragments. GEOLOGY Composition and Physical Characteristics Most pumice is silicic ranging from 60 to 70% SiO2, that is, dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Pumice of less silicic composition, including basaltic, occurs but it is less common and does not have extensive commercial use. Scoria and cinder are typically basaltic to andesitic with approximately 50 to 60% SiO2. Pumice and cinder may contain phenocrysts of feldspars and various ferromagnesian minerals that crystallized in the magma prior to eruption. Fragments of rock through which the magma has passed may be entrained in the melt and wall rock may be fragmented and admixed during an explosive eruption. Some scoria particles have lithic fragment cores. Phenocrysts and lithic fragments are relatively unimportant in cinder end uses but their presence may be detrimental in certain pumice products. Pumice typically has vesicles <1 mm in size separated by thin walls. Vesicle shapes include irregular, spherical, elliptical, and elongate to the point of being tubular with a silky appearance (Fig. 1). In some pumices, the vesicles are interconnected making the fragments permeable and highly absorbent; in others the vesicles are isolated forming a highly porous but very impermeable pumice. Floating masses of pumice fragments from the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 were reported in the Indian Ocean for up to two years after the eruption. Vesicles in cinder are larger and range from spherical to highly irregular in shape with much thicker walls and abundant interconnections. Scoria and cinder are typically heavier, porous, and do not float. Density and hardness of pumice must be expressed precisely to avoid confusion. Density may refer to the glass itself, the apparent density of the vesicular pumice particle, or the bulk density of pumice in a deposit or in a product. Pumice glass has a specific gravity of 2.5 or more depending on its composition. Pumice fragments typically have a specific gravity of 4.0 and so will float on water, at least until enough vesicles are saturated to cause them to sink. Expressed as density, pumice fragments typically weigh less than 1 g/cm3. Depending on moisture content, particle density, and particle size distribution, the bulk density of pumice typically ranges from 500 to 700 kg/m3. Typical bulk densities of cinder range from 700 to 900 kg/m3 for material used as lightweight aggregate while the bulk density of cinder used for highways and railroad ballast may be considerably higher. Hardness in pumice may refer to the glass vesicle walls, possibly including crystals or lithic fragments, or to the apparent hardness of the particle as a whole, which is more a measure of the strength of the vesicle structure. Pumice glass typically has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. A pumice particle may have a much lower apparent hardness and be easily cut with a knife or steel saw because the vesicle walls break readily. Pumice and cinder are primarily pyroclastic deposits formed as fragmental products of volcanic eruptions. Several classification - systems differing in various details have been proposed for pyroclasts and pyroclastic deposits based on particle size (Fisher, 1961, Schmid, 1981, Cas and Wright, 1988). Generally, particles >64 mm are referred to as blocks or bombs depending on their shape. Particles between 64 mm and 2 mm (4 mm in some schemes) are called lapilli and smaller particles are called ash. These names may be modified by compositional terms, for example pumice lapilli or scoria lapilli. Most commercial deposits are composed of fragments in the lapilli size range. In the United States, pumice fragments having one dimension of 5 cm or more are legally defined as block pumice. The procedures for acquiring pumice from federal land are determined in part by this definition and are described in a later section.

"This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."

"INTRODUCTION Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers, and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee Gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5oC to a high of 13.6oC, while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5 to about -1.5oC. The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary. MODELING OBJECTIVES The successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. Thermodynamic modeling of the heap provides the means to quantify the effectiveness of these different operational parameters on maintaining the required operating temperatures to avoid freezing within the heap. The operational parameters that were evaluated with the model included: • Burial depth of irrigation lines to prevent freezing during the winter months; • Variation in the temperature of the applied leach solution (to simulate heating of recirculated solution); • Variation in the rate of irrigation including seasonal variations between winter and summer months; • Seasonal versus year-round stacking of ore (to simulate the impact of the initial temperature of each ore layer as it is stacked); • Seasonal versus year-round crushing and stockpiling of ore, including the option to stockpile ore on the leach pad in the winter (i.e. stack but not leach fresh ore in winter); • Start date for seasonal stacking; • Variation of the heap geometry over time (both vertical and lateral expansion) and the associated heat storage within the heap; • Use of thermal covers (gravel or geomembrane) over the ore during the winter months; and • Effect of crush size on heat loss during crushing, stockpiling and stacking."

First Majestic Silver Corp’s La Encantada Silver Mine is a producing mine with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day. The La Encantada team is currently constructing two small-scale caving mines, including the San Javier breccia caving mine. The new mine is constructed within a mineralized breccia body composed of clasts of varying sizes and with very poor rock quality. Due to this poor rock quality, primary and secondary supports are required to support both the development and production stages. Since the proximity of the new mining levels to existing old workings, correct selection of the support system and proper production controls, instrumentation, and monitoring are very critical to maintain the stability of the pillars and fortification elements. An increased ground deformation due to the load transfer during the production stage is expected. This report reviews the primary and secondary support elements used in the different stages of mining, the monitoring of ground deformation, and the steps taken to analyze and visualize the collected data in order to enable the geotechnical team to manage caving stress and maintain pillar stability. INTRODUCTION First Majestic Silver Corp. (“First Majestic”) is a Canadian mining company focused on silver production in Mexico that operates six producing silver mines, including La Encantada Silver Mine (“La Encantada”). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. La Encantada is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Coahuila, in northern Mexico, in the municipality of Villa de Ocampo. The mine lies in the northern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental physiographic province. The mine location is shown in Figure 1. La Encantada is a producing mine, with a mill processing capacity of 3,000 tpd, and a 4,000 tpd capacity cyanidation leaching circuit equipped to process fresh underground ore and old tailings amenable to be reprocessed. The mine is currently employing several mining methods, including overhand cut and fill for narrow veins, small mantos, and other minor deposits. A subset of caving methods are applied on the larger, but weak, mineral deposits, such as at the San Javier breccia and La Prieta breccia. La Encantada consists of vein, manto, breccia pipe, and chimney deposits with concentrations of silver, lead, iron, and zinc in oxidized mineralization enclosed by calcareous sedimentary formations of Cretaceous age. At deeper levels, there is sulphide mineralization in skarn with zinc and silver concentrations associated with a granodiorite intrusion.

The use of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines has increased substantially during the last ten years in an effort to enhance mine safety and productivity. Pennsylvania and West Virginia are two of a number of states with regulations governing the use of such equipment. These states both developed and promulgated regulations before permitting diesel equipment in their underground coal mines because of concern for miners’ safety and health, especially with regard to the contamination of mine ventilation air with diesel exhaust emissions. The major components of diesel exhaust emissions are combustion gases and diesel particulate matter. The gaseous emissions consist of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons. The diesel particulate matter (DPM) is comprised of solid carbon particles, liquid and solid hydrocarbons, sulfates and moisture. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) also promulgated regulations in an effort to control diesel emissions in underground coal mines. MSHA has adopted threshold limit values (TLVs) for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust, which were established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). MSHA (30 CFR Part 72 Subpart D) has established a tailpipe DPM emissions limit of 2.5 g/hr for diesel engines used in permissible equipment, heavy-duty non-permissible equipment, generators and compressors used in underground coal mines. A tailpipe DPM limit of 5.0 g/hr has been established for light-duty outby diesel-powered equipment. The rationale for the tailpipe emissions limit was that an ambient measurement of DPM in a coal mine was not feasible because there is no established sampling method able to distinguish between coal mine dust and DPM. The stringent tailpipe emissions limit mandates the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices for most diesel engines used in underground coal mines today. One method by which tailpipe DPM can be reduced to MSHA limits involves using an exhaust cooling device in conjunction with a high-temperature, disposable diesel particulate filter.

The Expert Scheduling is a new, exciting method for scheduling underground and open-cut coal mines. A key feature of the Expert Scheduler is the adoption of an expert or artificial intelligence system. The expert system makes decisions regarding the schedule, such as which area should be mined. With existing scheduling systems these choices are made by the scheduling engineer. Developing one area may be better than another if it offers better quality or lower costs. Information the engineer considers in these decisions could be; • coal tonnage and quality targets, • equipment utilisation, • mining cost, • and other practical constraints. In expert scheduling a number of experts are appointed to make these decisions. A number of mining strategies are examined for each period. Information for each strategy is evaluated by "experts" and the "best" solution adopted. The method is based on the Blackboard Techniques. With this technique information is presented to "knowledge sources” or "experts" by the Blackboard Controller for their "opinions". These "opinions" are examined by the Blackboard Controller to select the best strategy. Engineers can readily add experts to the system, and modify the weighting of experts to suit mining conditions. Using an Expert Scheduler means that many schedule op- tions can be analysed quickly with full repeatability.

On August 29, 1989, the Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), published a Federal Register concerning a new proposed rule on air quality, chemical substances and respiratory protection standards. As of this writing, their proposed rule has not become a standard. However, with little revision it could be expected to become a standard, and we in the mining industry will be expected to adhere to and enforce it.

Attendance exceeded 4,500 minerals professionals from all over the world at SME&apos;s March 9-11 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Orlando, FL. The exhibit, of more than 600 booths, featured 398 of the mining industry&apos;s premier suppliers. The keynote session, "Change makers in the industry," opened the meeting. The session featured Jeffrey Clevenger, president of Cyprus Climax Metals; Mark Baker, senior vice president of Modular Mining Systems, a division of Komatsu; and John Correnti, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nucor. The SME meeting also featured four specialty programs: Bulk materials handling by conveyor belt, Latin American perspectives, plant operators&apos; symposium and waste characterization and treatment. Also open to attendees were more than 60 technical sessions encom¬passing coal, the environment, industrial minerals, mining and exploration, minerals and metallurgical processing and minerals resource management. Ed Dowling was the chair of the 1998 SME technical programming committee. And Dowling, director of process management and engineering for Cyprus Minerals, acted as the host of the SME keynote session. Dowling said the mining industry has undergone incredible change over the last decade. And the forces of change continue to accelerate. These changes include globalization, regulatory pressures, technology, labor, competition, pricing and other market influences, he said. With that in mind, the SME program committee selected as the theme of this year&apos;s SME Annual Meeting, "The changing world of mining ... our role." Given some of the current commodity prices, Dowling said, the theme is timely. He also noted that a large percentage of the 60 technical sessions spoke to the evolving operational and business aspects of the mining industry as the industry crossed international boundaries. The keynote session mirrored the meeting theme by focusing on the increasing challenges and required changes the minerals industry faces. Dowling reminded keynote attendees that change is not a new idea. He said Benjamin Franklin described three types of people: Those who are immovable, those who can be moved and those who are movers. And so it was appropriate that three of the most forward-thinking movers in the business - Clevenger, Baker and Correnti - address the keynote session, Dowling said. John Callaway moderated the keynote session. He is senior correspondent for WTTW TV, the public broadcast station in Chicago. For the past 13 years, Callaway has served as host of WTTW&apos;s award-winning, primetime news analysis program, Chicago Tonight. Callaway said that the keynote changemakers are recognized as industry leaders whose vision has led to significant business transformation and results. Lithium bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias in Brazil were investigated to determine whether there is a correlation between the lithium content of the mineral and the colour of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high grade ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tourmaline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but the colour of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink colour of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black colour of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepido lites appear to be lithium-rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or-Fe3+.

Renewed interest in the vast reserves of anthracite coal in eastern Pennsylvania led to the use of a numerical model for simulating the hydrologic effects of constructing an open-pit anthracite mine. The proposed mine would be approximately 1800-m (5900-ft) long, 1000-m (3300-ft) wide, and 300-m (1000-ft) deep. A two-dimensional, finite-difference, ground-water flow model was used to calculate ground-water seepage rates into the proposed mine, to evaluate the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering systems, to calculate drawdown in adjacent wells and properties, and to estimate the capacity of the water-treatment plant. Site-specific values of pertinent hydrogeologic parameters were used in the simulations.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. The performance of the filtometer was investigated by calibrating FT-IR data from DPM (dependent variable) to the filtometer spectra (predictor variables) using a partial leastsquares (PLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) approach. "INTRODUCTION Contemporary city is made of layers. Physical structures layers (built fabric, residential, commercial industrial etc. ), infrastructural layers (below and above ground), “green” layers (parks and open spaces), and also informational layers, i.e. connections, links, between sectors of the city and other territories. The “city of layers” concept represents the exercise of “rebuilding the city” per each layer, highlighting those physical built structures that are functional to define a relation. For example, if consider the “connection” relation, the city is re-designed by considering only transportation built structures. The layer obtained in such fashion is hence the “transportation” layer, including below grade infrastructures (subways) and above grade lines (rail, bus, tramways etc.), as below shown in Figure 1.In this sense, the contemporary city is represented by separate constructs assembled together according to a specific functionality (e.g. “connection”). As a consequence, the relation between what is built underground, and the related above-ground development, can be perceived in his most evident appearance. What could happen within the contemporary city if the planning process would begin from below to above and not vice-versa?INTERACTION The question risen in the introduction is strategic when approaching the difficult task of designing (or re-designing) a multi-level organism like the contemporary city. Nowadays, the theme of integration between underground and at-grade master planning has become the subject of many urban renovation projects, where the design process has begun within the transportation layer, underground, and further developed by interacting with at-grade structures already existing or in phase of design.A series of case studies where below/above interaction plays a key role in the project will be further analyzed. Moreover, it is relevant to understand the mechanics of an urban transformation process that originates within the transportation layer and ends up with the design of entire sectors of the city. The Transit Oriented Development approach is a useful tool to clearly understand such transformation process. TOD has become, in particular in the last decade, one of the most effective tools for urban design, in order to solve simultaneously the many different instances related to transit planning, urban design and real estate market."

The Larox Power PF Pressure Filter has been developed to meet the challenges of ever increasing output tonnages demanded by the minerals processing industry. This paper will highlight recent experiences at the Rudna Copper Concentrator in Poland, the Escondida Copper Concentrator in Chile and some large zinc concentrators in Australia. Detailed maintenance and operating cost information will be disclosed. Emphasis will be placed on economics on scale gained from higher machine throughputs.

The application of multiple point statistics (MPS) in oil studies has gained traction over the years; however, the use of MPS in mineral resource estimation and classification is still limited. This is despite MPS’ ability to deal with complex and heterogeneous geology better than the commonly applied two-point based methods. The availability and choice of a representative training image (TI) are often cited as the main challenge holding back MPS’ application in mining geostatistical studies. On the other hand, the general approach used in mining whereby early focus is on higher grade areas and lower grades are planned to be mined later presents a massive opportunity for the development of representative TIs. Mined-out areas provide large amounts of historical data that can be used to develop training images or training datasets that can be used to estimate in mining extension areas (often lower in grade), provided low grade areas are underpinned by similar geology analogue. This approach will enable more robust estimates in mine/pit extension areas for both high- and low-grade extensions than with traditional two-point geostatistical methods.

That is to say, the set of tasks ensures the geological data base at the stage of the deposit exploring and also its further use and. updating at the exploration stage. The following main elements may be ear-marked in the complex: (1) geological data base (GDB), (2) the data input system, (3) GDB maintainance, (4) "Geologist" geological application package (GAP). We have tended to classify these laws and their applicability into three categories: 1) coal mines, 2) metal and nonmetallic mines, and 3) mines with Federal supply contracts. With the growing attention which is being given to mine safety by the Federal government, the entire mining industry should keep aware of all developments in the administration of each of these laws.

The floatability of a bituminous coal in NaG solutions was evaluated using a modified Hallimond tube to delineate the role of the electrostatic interaction between bubbles and particles in determining the coal hydrophobicity. Zeta potential measurements showed that bubbles are negatively charged in the entire pH range tested, while coal particles are positively charged below pH 6.0 and negatively charged above it. Also, both sodium and chloride ions were confirmed to act as indifferent ions without any specific effects for both coal particles and bubbles. Flotation as a function of pH exhibited a maximum and minimum at low salt concentrations which is shown to be determined mainly by the coal hydrophobicity as measured by a new hydrophobic levitation technique. At high salt concentrations (above 0.1 mole/dm3), the flotation without such maximum or minimum is controlled by the electrostatic interaction between the bubble and the particle.

The Grants uranium region of northwest New Mexico is the largest uranium district in the United States (approximately 50% of U.S. production plus reserves) and one of the largest In the world, with approximately 900 million pounds U308 production plus reserves. Deposits of the region are unusual among sandstone deposits for their high content of epigenetic carbonaceous material, generally interpreted but not proved to be of humic origin--that is, co-extensive with uranium in the primary deposits. Virtually all production in the region has been from the Jackpile Sandstone and Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. The tabular uranium deposits contain, in addition to humate and uranium, significant authigenic phyllosilicates, quartz overgrowths, humate-replaced detrital silicates, and a trace-metal assemblage typical of other sandstone uranium deposit types. Surrounding the deposits in the two sandstone units of the Morrison Formation is an alteration zone within which iron leaching has altered detrital ilmenite-magnetite to residual masses of titanium oxides. Feldspar alteration is locally present within this zone, below deposits in the Jackpile Sandstone, and above those in the Westwater Canyon Member. The feldspar alteration increases in inten¬sity toward the Brushy Basin Member which separates the two sandstone units, ranging from partial replacement to replacement and dissolution of plagioclase and sanidine. Spatial relations among the epigenetic humate, authigenic silicates, and the broad alteration zones that extend from the Brushy Basin Member to and including the uranium deposits suggest that (a) the organic material was involved in the unusual silicate alteration, transport, and authigenesis, and (b) that the humates originated in shales of the Brushy Basin Member. Stratigraphic relations among the Brushy Basin Member and the overlying Jackpile Sandstone and underlying Westwater Canyon Member suggest [in turn] that there was continuous, interfingering deposition controlled in part by contemporaneous basement subsidence along northwest- and northeast-trending zones. Following minor erosion of upper Jackpile Sandstone and deposition of basal organic-rich Cretaceous sediments, the silicates of the Jackpile Sandstone were once again altered by organic-bearing fluids, this time permeating down from Cretaceous sediments and partly obliterated ore-stage alteration.

In-mine Continuous Wave (CH) Radio Imaging method (RIM) instrumentation has the capability of measuring EM wave propagation constants in layered formations. The RIM method is based upon the fact that seams of coal, trona, potash, quartzite, gilsonite and oil bearing sands form natural waveguides for low loss transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The waveguide forms whenever the seam is bounded by more conducting claystone, mudstone, shale or in the case of oil/gas traps, by a floor of saline water. Disturbances caused by faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the propagation constant. The analytical values of the EM wave propagation constants depend on the physical and electrical parameters of the seam. The values are presented in this paper in a graphical form to assist in the interpretation of RIM tomographic images. This paper compares in-mine geologic mapping obtained during mining to tomographic images of the geologic disturbance zones in a Central Utah coal mine.
