In a recently developed, long-term open pit production planning model, the optimal plan is found by exhaustively searching through nested pits of maximum metal contents. A more efficient, dynamic programming (DP) based search algorithm now replaces the exhaustive search algorithm that requires prohibitively long execution time in real life cases. The logic and formulation of the newly developed search algorithm are illustrated through a small hypothetical case. An actual gold deposit is treated to demonstrate that the algorithm does indeed find the optimal production plan among all possible plans. A comparison, in terms of computational savings between the two algorithms, is also given.

The purpose of developing this system is to monitor the operating status of the fully mechanized mining system in order to raise it's reliability. The completely mechanized coal mining system is a complex dynamic system, involving many sub-systems. It is the key of the mining process as well as a connected system composed of each working procedure. Any hitch in breaking, loading or transporting will interrupt the mining process. The analyses of the operating data has proved that the reasons causing the interruption of the extracting processes mainly come from the inner of coal face. Hence, after the installation of the MINOS system in England, the delays of belt conveyor sub-system were reduced. But the production increment was not as much as expected.

Subsurface construction projects are risky ventures and the decision to deliver a project using the Design-Build model does not eliminate those risks. Differing site conditions, inadequate design, and delays will continue to plague some projects. The Design-Build procurement model, however, presents a broad opportunity to allocate those risks much differently than in the familiar Design-Bid-Build model. Starting with a philosophical approach to risk and reward, this paper discusses the continuum of possible risk allocation strategies. It concludes with a proposed optimum strategy in terms of the project’s overall economic efficiency, and points to the dispositive contractual provisions that serve to contour the risks.

The removal of oxyanions of arsenic present in mine process water and drinking water to a regulatory level (i.e. below 50 ppb) is a challenging problem. Conventional water treatment methods presently used for controlling arsenic have several drawbacks and limited success. A new adsorbent (LS™) developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, has strong specificity for both arsenate and arsenite species present in process waters. The adsorbent in very selective to oxyanions of arsenic and competition of other indifferent ions is minimum. Water samples from different sources were tested and arsenic was successfully removed to below 50 ppb. This paper describes both batch and packed column tests conducted in the laboratory as well as at the plant sites using LS™.

By using a computer application to monitor all aspects of the daily production as well as the maintenance, a company can immediately effect a cost reduction by studying the down-time and delay trends on an everyday basis. This paper will outline how a company can use a program to not only put a stop to the increasing supply and maintenance costs but start trimming each of these cost centers while actually increasing the efficiency and productivity of the current work force.

Various types of commercial ion exchange resins were evaluated with respect to their ability to extract gold from cyanide leach solutions. Large differences were found among the various resins in terms of selectivity and gold loading. The hydrophi­licity and the charge density appear to be the main factors that determine the resin characteristics. Polystyrene weak-base resins, such as Dowex MWA-1, exhibited the best all-round performance.

Safety training requirements differ from mine to mine due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Accordingly, a microcomputer-based procedure has been developed to assist mine trainers is determining if undesired worksite performances result from lack of knowledge or skill, which are trainable categories, or from categories that are considered to be non-trainable (such as equipment limitations or management procedures). A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

Bonds are required by state and federal law to address reclamation when the permittee defaults. Under various principles of law, a bonding company may propose to perform the obligations of the permittee, however, the negotiations with the regulatory agencies, surface and mineral owners and other interested parties can create a very complicated scenario that requires an understanding of the law regarding environmental protection, bankruptcy and surety ship, along with technical expertise in land reclamation. This paper presents the engineering professional with a framework regarding areas of law that pertain to surety reclamation projects and negotiations with state and federal agencies and related parties. Though presented in the context of the coal industry, the principles discussed are generally applicable to the mining industry as a whole.

Significant economic deposits (> 4,000 ha) of heavy mineral sands (ilmenite, rutile and zircon) were discovered in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Virginia and North Carolina in 1989. The majority of these lands support highly productive row crop agriculture, and the development of restoration protocols that would return these lands to agricultural use was deemed to be critical to the long-term sustainability of mining operations. Virginia Tech worked closely with all stakeholders to develop appropriate restoration protocols and to coordinate their implementation. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc., and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical, and social issues. Return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production has been complicated by lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and limited topsoil return. Approximately 150 ha of land are in various phases of reclamation, and approximately 25 ha have been released back to landowners to date. Currently, the reclaimed pits are returned to pasture vegetation, but return to more intensive agricultural production practices may be possible as soil reconstruction procedures are improved over time.

Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell mine and mill at Balmertown, in the north western corner of Ontario. The mine operates at 1.3 kt/d (1,500 stpd). It produced more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold during the last three years. Changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10% to 15% increase in gravity recovery. The mill head grade at the Campbell Mill is relatively high, averaging 18.5 g/t (0.54 oz/st) over the total reserve tonnage. During the past several years, the head grade was averaging close to 20 g/t (0.6 oz/st). Before 1994, gravity concentration was achieved by using a combination of conventional mineral jigs and tables. Jig concentrates were upgraded on shaking tables to produce a concentrate, which was refined to bullion. In May 1994, management decided to buy two Knelson CD 760-mm (30-in.) concentrators. The objective was to replace the existing jigs and increase gravity gold recovery by up to 15%. Gravity recovery with jigs averaged between 30% to 35%. Gravity recovery was anticipated to increase to about 50% with the Knelsons.

A lot of work is in progress to improve copper recovery by leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning (L-SX-EW). At Outokumpu the focus of attention is on SX equipment development as a result of which a new mixing-settling technology, the Vertical Smooth Flow (VSF) has been introduced. Using helical stirrers in the VSF mixers a more gentle and uniform contacting can be obtained than in the mixing compartments of the low-profile design. The benefits of Outokumpu's new approach are an essential decrease in organic losses and in aqueous in organic entrainments. Separate pumping using a smoothly pre-contacting "Dispersion Overflow Pump" (DOP) is a key feature of the VSF design. The scale-up of this pump as well as the VSF mixers are shown to follow simple mathematical relationships which also have been confirmed by full scale experiments.

ABSTRACT Distinct patterns are identified in the associations, distributions, and levels of concentration of the silica minerals, boehmite, aluminous goethite, and phosphate minerals in the bauxite deposits of Jamaica. These result from syngenetic and diagenetic reactions associated with post-bauxitization tectonic and associated activities. Three basic types of bauxite are identified, viz., Jamaica-1 (< 3.0% boehmite), Jamaica-2 (> 3.0% boehmite and 30-80% of the iron as aluminous goethites), and Jamaica-3 (> 3.0% boehmite and > 90% of the iron as aluminous goethites). The Jamaica-1 type has a mean value of < 2% boehmite as A1203, while this level in the Jamaica-2 type is usually about 3.5%, and > 4% in the Jamaica-3 type. Similar discrete associations were found for the species and concentrations of aluminous goethite and phosphate minerals. The process and geological implications of these are discussed.

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

Starting with rutile, containing more than 55% TiO2 and of the proper particle size, the commercial production of titanium tetrachloride via fluidized bed chlorination is relatively very simple and economical. As compared to shaft chlorination, it operates at a much higher capacity for given sizing of equipment, and appears more foolproof, requiring less attention. Operating data were obtained on a 53" diameter fluidized bed chlorinator using Australian rutile and petroleum coke of controlled particle size. Production rates varied from 20 to 50 tons of crude TIC14 per day for a campaign extending over one month. Close to theoretical yields and efficiencies were obtained from the viewpoint of chlorine and/or rutile consumption. Details of important equipment design, critical operating conditions and pertinent results are described.

The introduction of biotechnological principles in hydrometallurgy has created new opportunities and challenges for the industry of mineral processing. During the 1950&apos;s and 608s, the mining wastes and unused complex mineral resources have been successfully treated in bacterial assisted heap and dump leaching processes, especially for the production of copper and uranium. The economic viability of bio- leaching technology lead to its world-wide acceptance by the mining industries. During the 1970&apos;s this technology grew into a more structured discipline which is called "biohydrometallurgy". Currently, bioleaching techniques are ready to be used, in addition to copper and uranium, for the extraction of cobalt, nickel, zinc, gold and silver from diverse mineral resources and for the desulfurization of certain coals. However, in a foreseeable future the biohydrometallurgical processes may be applied also for the treatment of high- grade ores and mineral concentrates using native and/or genetically engineered microorganisms.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. "Rock tunnels suffered severe damage from recent large earthquakes in Japan, despite the empirical knowledge that tunnels tolerate earthquakes better than surface structures. Seismic design for rock tunnels have therefore become a fascinating subject for many tunnel engineers. However, even basic behavior, including deformation mode and loading magnitude for hard-rock TBM tunnels and conventional ones during earthquake, has not been fully understood due to lack of actual seismic data; while EPB and slurry TBM tunnels take account of seismic design in Japan if needed. This study conducted a dynamic measurement in an actual road tunnel constructed in rock. The strongest aftershock of “the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake” (Mw = 7.1) occurred during the measurement, providing precious data to examine deformation mode of the tunnel. Considering the acquired data, numerical analysis was also performed to calculate loading magnitude to cause fatal fracture of tunnel lining during earthquake.INTRODUCTIONLarge earthquakes can pose serious risks even for rock tunnels, as evidenced by large earthquakes in the past. In the large earthquake in Japan in 2004 (Mw = 6.6), some tunnels suffered severe damage including collapse of their permanent lining (Mashimo 2005), even though the tunnels were constructed in ordinary ground conditions except for fault, fracture zone, portal area, etc. To mitigate such risks, mechanical behavior of tunnel lining during earthquake should be clarified; however, even basic mechanical behavior including load-bearing capacity of the tunnel lining against earthquake is not fully understood.Numerous damage modes were actually observed due to various ground conditions (eg. Wang et al. 2001; Mashimo 2005). Among them, major tunnel damage caused by earthquakes can be grouped into three main modes as shown in Figure 1, excluding extremely unusual conditions such as a tunnel located on a stratum boundary where the stratum stiffness varies significantly. TYPE-I shows flexural failure or crack by bending moment at shoulders; TYPE-II indicates compression failure or flexural compression failure at crown; and TYPE-III illustrates compression failure at sidewall, mainly observed on tunnel that was constructed using steel ribs and lagging method. These damage modes, Type-I, II and III, are predominantly caused by shearing, horizontal compressing and vertical compressing deformations of the surrounding ground, respectively (Kusaka et al. 2011; Asakura et al. 2001)."

Formalized technical audits for mining machinery during manufacturing are a fairly new concept to the North American mining industry. Although used extensively elsewhere, especially in Australia, the concept of independent auditing of machinery design and manufacturing has been slow to gain acceptance in the United States and Canada. Simply stated, a technical audit is an independent, third-party review of all or specific portions of machinery design, manufacturing and assembly to verify compliance with purchase specifications and suitability of the machinery for the specified application. If specified correctly, the useful life of different kinds of structural and mechanical components can be extended beyond normally accepted usage. There is no reason why, if properly designed and built for the application, major structural components on mining machinery cannot be made to last for 20 years before being rebuilt. Also, gearing can be made to routinely last for 15 years.

A new approach has been developed that is capable of ascertaining the ore component that is responsible for the preg­robbing of pregnant pulps. Many gold mines are currently treating ores containing a component that is detrimental to the recovery of gold, in that they "preg-rob" the pregnant pulp by adsorption of some of the dissolved gold. The identity of the preg-robbing component in this type of ore has been the subject of considerable debate over a lengthy period, th various suggestions including amorphous carbon, chlonte, chalcopyrite and layered silicates, such as the phyllosilicate minerals pyrophyllite, kaolinite, phlogopite and illite. A means is now available to identify and characterize the preg-robber in gold ores. This new approach consists of contacting the ore with a synthetic aurocyanide solution, identifying the mineral grains by optical microscopy and analysing each grain individually using high-sensitivity electron microprobe analysis. The approach is exemplified in this initial study by identifying the preg-robbing component in an active sample of gold-bearing shale to be an amorphous carbonaceous phase consisting of discrete particles of about 5 µm diameter interspersed with shale particles and agglomerated into grains of up to 100 µm diameter. Microanalysis of these grains as well as other mineral particles revealed that the gold content of some of the carbonaceous grains was close to 7000 g,lt, with no gold being detected in any of the other mineral phases that were found to be present (e.g. quartz, chlorite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, etc). Bulk analysis of the sample for carbon and gold confirmed that gold loadings of around 7000 g,/t would be expected if all of the gold were adsorbed onto the carbonaceous component. The carbonaceous constituent is probably also responsible for the anomalously high surface area measured for the material. It probably acts in a similar fashion to activated carbon, and the correct choice of organic blinding agent will decrease the extent of preg-robbing by lowering the activity of the material for gold, without causing any downstream problems such as fouling of the activated carbon used for gold recovery

Perhaps the hottest item on the agendas of most state legislators this year is the state budget. The main question: Where will all the dollars come from to finance health care programs, state jobs, unemployment compensation programs, and on and on? This is especially so since people are out of work, business bankruptcies are up, sales are down, and incoming revenues from some sources have decreased or dried up. A sure bet is that state taxes will be increased in some form or another. The mining industry could face increased income taxes, property taxes, severance taxes, or even a host of new taxes (if the state does not already have them) like a gross receipts tax, investment tax, or tax on revenues made outside state borders. That&apos;s bad news for an already depressed industry, even though increased taxes may be the least of the industry&apos;s worries in the current economic climate. While reopening existing mines and developing most new mineral projects depends primarily on higher commodity prices, new taxes still could pose long term concerns for mine project development. Just how mineral tax law impacts a project is not easy to figure. It involves a complex set of calculations based on interpretations of numerous federal, state, and local tax laws that change almost annually. At best, projections of tax effects for the life of a mine are educated guesses. At the same time, projections are necessary to evaluate the economic feasibility of a mineral project. At a recent Technology Transfer Seminar, the US Bureau of Mines introduced a computer software program designed to evaluate the feasibility of a mineral project and to determine the tax effects on the project&apos;s discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR). The program, called MINSIM, began in 1967 as a 200-statement FORTRAN II program for evaluating a hypothetical large-scale open-pit gold mine. This single-commodity oriented program employed discrete simulation techniques and a continuous DCFROR was used to measure the effect of changes in revenues and costs. Over the past 15 years, MINSIM has developed into a program 70 to 100 times larger than the original. Basically, it will analyze costs and parameters specific to an identified deposit, then determine the DCFROR. Or by using a specified DCFROR, it will determine the primary commodity price required to attain that specified rate of return. MINSIM, which is explained in detail in this article, is available from the Division of Minerals Availability, USBM free of charge. Written in FORTRAN IV, it comes on punch cards or magnetic tape and is compatible with most major computer systems. The MINSIM Program The main objective of any freeenterprise mining venture is to make a profit. To determine profitability of a given project, alternate methods of operating and financing must be evaluated. That is the purpose of MINSIM. While there are a number of methods of evaluating the economic profitability of a mining project, MINSIM uses the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFROR) method as its major criterion because DCFROR considers the time value of money and gives the truest measure of profitability. One disadvantage is that the calculations are deposit oriented. In other words, MINSIM analyzes only those costs and parameters specific to the deposit. It cannot be used to evaluate the overall corporate picture. The program is designed to simultaneously handle five different commodities and a leach operation for any type of mining project. For example, analysis of a coal project would include only one commodity-coal at the mine mouth. Analysis of a copper operation might include numerous commodities-from the raw material to the refined product. Input MINSIM considers capital investment-recoverable exploration, acquisition, and development costs; depreciable capital investments such as mine plant and equipment, mill plant and equipment, and infrastructure costs; all general and commodity specific operating costs; and the cost of alternate financing methods. The program has the capacity to incorporate different types of depletion allowances, numerous commodity-dependent severance taxes, variations of property taxes, and many methods for calculating state or provincial taxes. There are even many different ways to calculate federal and national taxes. The capacity to handle tax variations is generated from an internal subroutine in the program called the "open file." The user can reconstruct, customize, or evaluate any kind of tax desired. Outputs Given this kind of capacity for numerous input parameters, MINSIM is capable of the follow¬ing major outputs:
