Fall of ground is a leading source of worker injury and fatality indicating a persistent need for ground monitoring technology. The HRTMM is an experimental convergence monitor utilizing a digital camera and custom software to track the position of one or more lasers across the target. Apparent laser movement is proportional to target convergence. The HRTMM was installed in an underground mine near active operations to test its response to the mining environment. This included intense blasting vibration and mine fog. Results and potential of the new monitoring technology will be discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. The LBNF Far Site Conventional Facilities project will excavate and fit out a set of four caverns 4850 ft underground in which to place them."

Knowledge based applications are becoming important to Associated Manganese for efficiently dispatching ore of appropriate grades to customers on time. The G2 expert system shell has been used to develop blending and scheduling applications using a combination of object-oriented rule based, procedural, and heuristic approaches. The blending application, for example uses a heuristic approach for creating blends from thousands of small stacks of manganese ore of various grades and sizes, to meet customer specifications while fully exploiting the available inventory. Data capture and data warehousing have become important issues, and the Internet shows strong potential for distribution of pre-processed information.

J.R. Sturgul Thompson and Adler (1988) present a new simulator for use in designing conveyor belt systems for underground mines. Their model uses a large Fortran program to do a Monte Carlo simulation. Their approach is similar to that done by other researchers, such as Stanford (1965) and Newhart (1977). All Fortran based simulation models use an imaginary clock that is advanced a time increment. At each advance of time increment the program has to determine what is to take place in the system. Since many things can take place at different places in the system, this approach requires that a large amount of logic is needed at each step of the program. This, then, necessitates a great amount of jumping between different portions of the program. In fact, the Fortran program, CMBCS, takes up to 15 to 20 minutes to run on the mainframe and several hours for the PC. Such execution times are typical of Fortran based simulation studies. There have been other examples of Fortran based simulation studies in mining. Cross and Williamson (1969) presented a model of a working open-pit copper mine. Fosinato (1982) presented a model of the bucketwheel excavators for the large open-pit mines in Southern Victoria in Australia. These excavators discharge into a complex conveyor system, which can be thought of as being similar, but more complicated than the one modeled by CMBCS. All previous simulation studies using Fortran as the source code have several things in common: they all are very lengthy, often being of the order of 10,000 lines of code and take a great deal of CPU time to execute. The program of Fosinato takes more than 4.5 hours to run on a large mainframe. Also not mentioned by Thompson and Adler is the actual time it took to write the Fortran code. This, too, can be considerable, as Fosinato's program took several man years to write and de-bug. In order to change it, as the parameters change or as the mine increases, further large amount of time is needed. An alternate to such Fortran based programs is provided by using a special computer language known as General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS). This language is designed to solve a wide variety of discrete event simulation problems and appears to be particularly suited for mining situations as shown by Sturgul and Yi (1987). Although GPSS was introduced as far back as 1961, it has not been used in mining to any great extent. However, the original form was quite crude and inefficient compared to modern versions. Perhaps with the increasing popularity and availability of these recent versions, this will change. Two such versions are GPSS/H for the mainframe and GPSS/PC for the personal computer. GPSS/H allows for interactive usage, such as allowing input data to be entered via a menu. GPSS/PC has excellent graphical capabilities and one can actually view the simulation in progress. In addition, one can halt the simulation and change values of various parameters. If a particular portion of the simulation is in progress via a concept known as "microwindows." These new versions have greatly increased the potential for using the language for mining situations. Mining applications of GPSS have been given by Sturgul and Yi (1987), Sturgul and Harrison (1987), Sturgul (1987), and Sturgul and Singhal (1988). Poland in time of transition had been dealing with the remnants of the previous regime ? particularly in the field of environmental protection. The burden left was tremendous and there was a need for fast and effective tools for improving the environment. The idea of environmental protection had been supported by the introduction of a new environmental policy that underlined the importance of sustainable development in industry in the beginning of 1990s. This policy introduced high environmental fees and fines ? a concept not very popular in Europe in that time ? and good only for a country in transition to boost the protection of the environment. While this policy had its role to play, its role is now completed. It is time to move forward, especially when these environmental charges affect the international competitiveness of industries so much, and at the same time have virtually no influence on environmental protection investments any more.

The offered technological line includes a flotation pulp air conditioner operating on the impact-mechanical effect and two column apparatuses with a descending pulp-air flow mounted in series. The technology developed makes it possible to increase considerably the valuable component in the concentrate simultaneously with a reduction in energy consumption for the flotation process. The experience achieved with the technology showed the possibility for obtaining sulphide silver-bearing ore superconcentrates with the noble metal content 2-10 times higher than that in the concentrates obtained by the conventional technology. The same results were obtained in the process of calcium-bearing boron-silicate ore-dressing.

The decade of the 70?s saw a series of landmark environmental resource programs enacted by the Congress. Many states followed suit, so that by the end of the decade air quality, water pollution, and the conservation of other natural resources, including minerals, were the subject of a wide-ranging body of laws, policies, regulations, and procedures. Many of the actions required or permitted by this rule-making involved areas for which adequate information and substantial experience were not available. Moreover, goals and objectives were sometimes established which were enormously difficult to achieve technically, or of such formidable expense as to cause concern about their consequences in the marketplace. It is therefore hardly surprising that one product of all this activity has been a mass of litigation. Court dockets are crowded with suits and counter-suits involving both substantive and procedural aspects of environmental protection. Indeed, it is probably fair to say that the volume and range of environmentally-related disputes brought before the courts parallels that generated by the civil rights movement a decade ago. There were also some new dimensions to the environmental movement. For the first time, the national environmental policy act required agencies to prepare environmental impact statements when proposed projects or activities would have substantial impacts on environmental resources. Another requirement of many of the new programs mandated meaningful citizen participation in public decision-making. Here, as elsewhere, the purpose was admirable, but guidelines were vague, and the result often was inaction, polarization, and litigation.

INTRODUCTION In 1974 two of the present authors reported the results of a pilot study indicating an increase of lung cancer risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Muller, Wheeler, 1973, 1974) The study was based on data contained in a computerized Mining Master File maintained by the Ontario Workmen's Compensation Board that contained information on miners examined in Ontario who had either 60 months of dust exposure in mines or had signs of pneumoconiosis or tuberculosis. Including the above conditions the definition of uranium miners added the condition of one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario. This list of Ontario uranium miners contained 8,649 names. Following the results of this first pilot study, we embarked on creating a file of uranium miners containing information on men with one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario without any further conditions. This file was used by the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines in their study of risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Hewitt 1976) This file contained 15,094 names. In this report we give an outline and progress report on a study of Ontario miners that we are conducting at present. It was felt that the male population of Ontario is not necessarily an adequate control population for uranium miners. A preliminary examination of the work history of uranium miners indicated that the majority of them (about 90 percent) had other mining experience in addition to their exposure in uranium mines. We therefore considered it useful to evaluate the possible effects of non-uranium mining on risk, and for this reason decided to make the Uranium Miners Study part of a study dealing with the mortality of Ontario miners in general. Aims of the Study The aims of the Study include the evaluation of: 1) the risk of dying by cause in non-uranium miners as compared to the male population of Ontario and Northern Ontario. 2) any differences that might exist in the death experience of non-uranium miners by cause according to ore mined. 3) the effect of length of exposure in non-uranium mines on age-specific risk by cause. 4) the dose-response function for primary cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung from exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters. 5) the possible effect of the mining environment on deaths from causes other than cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung. The study will address itself to a number of other factors that might well affect the dose-response function. These include: a) factors in the mine environment - other than radon daughters - that might affect lung cancer mortality. b) the effect of non-uranium mining on lung cancer risk in uranium miners. c) the effect of age as well as age at time of exposure on lung cancer risk. d) questions of latency and the possible dependence of latency on age at time of exposure. e) smoking as an important factor in lung cancer risk. f) Histological type of cancer in relation to the various parameters of exposure and age. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Study is making use of existing computerized data files and has set up certain new files. These include the Mining Master File and the Model Development File. The Mining Master File This file is a computerized record of data on individual miners obtained at yearly miners' examinations that have been carried out since the mid 1920's. The conditions for inclusion in the Mining Master File have been indicated above. Information contained in the file includes: (1) Identifying information: a) Surname and given names b) Date and place of birth c) Miners Certificate Number d) Social Insurance Number if available. (2) Updated Employment data obtained at each miner's examination: a) Year of first dust exposure in Ontario b) Year of first dust exposure outside Ontario c) Number of months worked in mining d) Ores mined e) Mining areas and mines f) Occupations

Small tonnage ore bodies can be developed at a profit on a short life basis. Such is the case of the Bardon Mine in. the Big Indian Mining District in San Juan County. Utah. Faced with a small initial tonnage of high grade uranium ore, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation Engineers developed some new ideas for sinking the shaft and planned extraction to warrant the capital risk to mine a limited reserve. The Bardon Mine is located fifty miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the south end of the Big Indian Mining -district. Shattuck Denn Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation, manages and operates the property under an operating agreement with Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc. of. Oklahoma City. Oklahoma, and Anderson Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Based. on Kerr-McGee drilling., a tabular ore body about 350 feet long by 250 feet wide with an average thickness in excess of seven feet was indicated.- The ore body strikes easterly-westerly and dips from nine to twelve degrees to the south. Uraninite is the dominant uranium ore mineral associated with vanadium. The ore occurs in an arkosic conglomeratic sandstone with some interfingering of mudstone and shale in the Mossback member of the Chinle formation in contact with the underlying Cutler formation. The ore horizon is overlain with 40 to 60 feet of mudstone and shale. Fortunately, the back. immediately over the ore is a reasonable competent shaley sandstone which has made a fairly good. environment for roof bolting.

For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. "Mining began in the Erzgebirge (“ore mountains”) region of Saxony, Germany more than 800 years ago, and extensive underground workings cut through the entire area. Some of these old workings are still used today: not for production, but for offering an underground venue for research, tourism and university teaching. One example is the Reiche Zeche mine at the Technische Universität Bergakadamie Freiberg which hosts one of the oldest mining engineering programs in the world. It is imperative to keep all active mine workings well ventilated to make the mine safe for students, visitors and researchers. Since the mine workings at Reiche Zeche are so vast, extensive and, to a large extent unexplored and unmapped, it has been difficult to provide a complete, functioning and adequate mine ventilation model for this mine that accounts for all known and unknown leakage air flows. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have cooperation with their colleagues at Freiberg to establish a mine ventilation network model based on a limited number of air readings in known and accessible drifts. In order to balance the measured air quantities, leakage flows were quantified and mapped by comparing input and output flows of mapped drifts, and modelled using Ventsim Visual, a powerful visualization software package. The resulting mine ventilation model is used to locate and quantify the leakage air flows and to examine how much air is lost in each area. With this model, ventilation changes and improvements underground can be documented reflected in the model. This enables the Bergakadamie Freiberg to project air changes required for scientific experiments and to set up mine ventilation in specific areas and for specific needs. The model also enables better ventilation control and monitoring than before. Finally, the model can be used to predict ventilation changes and escape way contamination in case of a fire, ground fall or inundation in the mine. The latter becomes important as the lower mine workings are often flooded during spring runoff, which has created uncertainty about mine ventilation in the past. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The discovery of silver, lead, zinc, tin and other valuable metal ores in the Erzgebirge region of Saxony, Germany began in the12th century and started a mining boom than lasted for centuries. Surface mines quickly developed underground to access the higher grade veins. Explored by the early geologists and driven by the ingenuity of the miners, the underground works expanded vastly throughout Freiberg and the surrounding region. Development followed the highest grade veins, and engineers developed solutions to drain water and provide limited ventilation to the underground workings. Still, engineered and planned ventilation was usually not a priority in the development of a new drift, which today makes ventilation modeling a significant challenge."

The application per se is to some extent very simple. The main purpose of the paper, however, is to draw the attention of mining people to how the option pricing theory may be used to capital investment decisions. This topic in economics is quite new but is attracting a lot of attention.

The energy structure and consumption ratio in China determine the practical demand for the collaborative mining of coal and co-associated resources. The multi-layer mining of coal, uranium, coalbed methane, and oil and gas co-associated resources, represented by the Ordos Basin, Junggar Basin, and Tarim Basin, faces numerous challenges. Additionally, coal has been found to coexist with various mineral resources in 33 coal-bearing basins worldwide. The scientific issues related to the multi-layer development of coal related co-associated resources urgently need to be addressed. This paper discusses the unique challenges and potential solutions in the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources. The challenges include large extraction space, high mining intensity, intense overburden movement, rapid surface subsidence, and severe overburden damage due to repeated mining disturbances. Proposed solutions include the establishment of a correlation mechanism between multi-layer mining and the carrying capacity of the overburden environment, analysis of the impact characteristics of multiple field couplings, and exploration of their superposition evolution laws. The paper also proposes the development of a comprehensive evaluation and prediction system for overburden environmental capacity loss, a global sensitivity analysis model for overburden environmental capacity, and an intelligent identification and early warning system based on multi-source information fusion. These solutions aim to achieve scientific and precise mining with minimal overburden environmental capacity loss. And the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources is a complex task that requires a multidisciplinary approach and innovative solutions, and further research is needed to validate these strategies and explore new methods and technologies for efficient and sustainable extraction.

The R-N Process is an outgrowth of the development by the National Lead Company's Norwegian subsidiary Titania A/S, of a process for producing metallic iron and a high titanium content co-product from ilmenite. Development of the process for the treatment of iron ores was continued as a joint project of the Republic Steel Corporation and the National Lead Company in 1953. More recently in July, 1957, the R-N Corporation was created by these two companies to undertake the commercial promotion of the results of this joint project. This paper has been prepared with the permission and encouragement of these three companies. The R-N process has as its objective the making of metallic iron from iron ores or iron ore concentrates. The general principles of the process have already been disclosed in technical papers and patents. In general the process comprises the following steps: 1. Iron oxide in crushed natural iron ores or iron ore concentrates is reduced to about 95% metallic iron, without fusion in a rotary kiln in the presence of solid carbonaceous fuel,*such as, coke or char, limestone and combustible gases. 2. The kiln discharge, consisting of metallized ore, coke, lime and coke ashes, is cooled. The excess coke is regenerated and recycled to the kiln feed.

Many recent mine developments in North America are located in remote northern regions with extreme winter temperatures in the range of -20oF to -60°F. In addition, many locations are subject to very heavy snowfall. This paper discusses some of the key considerations in the planning and design of mine plant buildings, particularly concentrators, located in these regions. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS The subject is considered under three main headings: I. Building Out line and Structural Frame 2. Wall and Roof Materials 3. Foundations The plan outline of a mine plant building will naturally be governed by the scope and layout of the process equipment it contains. The selection of roof profile, on the other hand, will generally depend upon a number of factors extraneous to the process e.g. snow conditions. When these factors are considered for concentrators in cold locations, a flat or stepped roof will usually be more economical and suitable than a sloping roof. The materials normally used for the structural framework of concentrators are the same as used for other industrial buildings, namely steel, concrete and wood. British Columbia's physiography - the mountains, valleys and watercourses - provides the basis for rich and varied plant and animal resources and for complex land uses. Mining alters the physical environment in a manner that may create a disproportionate impact on biological resources and land use systems. The object of environmental legislation is therefore largely the protection of the basic physical environment: land surface, water, and air. The pace of mineral exploration, placer mining, and underground and surface gold mining has recently quickened in British Columbia, testing the ability of both industry and regulatory agencies to respond to legislative requirements. Some parameters of mining activity have critical significance for environmental protection, for example: the area disturbed; the physical and chemical qualities of ore, waste and overburden; and the nature of materials handling. Acid mine drainage is a particular hazard. Provincial legislation that applies to mining includes the Mines Act, the Environment Management Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Water Act. Government of Canada legislation includes the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations. Every new mine proposal in British Columbia is reviewed in the Mine Development Review Process, which receives its mandate from the Provincial Environment and Land Use Cabinet Committee. The Homestake Mine, located in Lead, SD, has been in business for 113 years. Until 10 years ago, conventional mining methods were used to extract ore. Due to complexities in the ore bodies and increasing costs, new technology was introduced to the mine. An integral part of this technology was mechanized cut-and-fill mining. This mining method currently produces about 50% of the annual production and has proven to he safe and economical. As a result, the Homestake Mine remains competitive in today's market.

The phosphate mining industry is confronted everywhere in the world with financial difficulties and low prices which prohibit further investments and development of new mines even in regions with a comparative cost advantage (North America/ North Africa/ and Middle East). But old mines are being progressively exhausted/ and if no replacement mines come on stream in the near future/ we may soon find ourselves (around the year 2000) with a global annual production capacity of 160 million tonnes of marketable phosphate rock instead of the capacity of 200 million tonnes existing today. Unless prices improve/ phosphate rock/ a non-renewable resource and a vital commodity to world agriculture/ may turn to be in short supply to world fertilizer industry. Whatever the extent of recovery of fertilizer demand/ the expected decline of the production capacity during the 1990 I s is bound to cause the disappearance by the year 2000 of the important surplus characterizing today the supply/demand balance.

"INTRODUCTION Mechanized underground mines often suffer from noise overexposure. Noise levels are usually above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) where underground fans are used. Sound levels in active workings can reach 121 dB(A), especially when fans are not equipped with silencers. Use of silencers seldom ensure PEL for various reasons. Overexposure of noise induces permanent hearing loss among mine workers. Recent field studies by a NIOSH-funded research project at six coal and non-coal mines revalidated the findings. The University of Utah has undertaken laboratory studies to reduce fan noise at the source. A new silencer prototype with varying noise dampening material has been designed and tested. The silencer and an associated extension which can be repacked with different dampening materials were used in various configurations. Attempts were made to simulate field conditions where installations are quick and not perfect. The test results are presented here. NOISE IN UNDERGROUND MINES Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a chronic problem in the mining industry. In spite of regulations being in place and elaborate hearing protection programs under way, hearing loss is prevalent among the mine workers (Bise, 2001). All production and support machinery in mining generate loud noise often beyond the approved exposure level. Researchers in the U.S. have identified auxiliary fans as one of the major sources of noise that can create noise exposure levels up to 121 dB(A), which is one of the highest in the mining operation (Bauer, 2006). Studies have demonstrated substantial reduction of noise level by using silencers. Adequate fan selection and proper utilization of silencers in auxiliary fans have great potential of abating the problem. In hard rock mines, auxiliary fans are used in blower configuration to ventilate development headings and large production stopes, and also to ventilate underground shops, crushers, conveyor transfer points, etc. Typical duct diameters in hard rock mines vary from 0.91 m to 1.21 m. Silencers are often omitted for cost reduction. In coal mines auxiliary fans are used in exhaust configuration with rigid ducts 0.61- 0.76 m in diameter (Hagood, 1982 and Moreby, 2009) to ventilate working faces in gate-roads and main entry developments. Sometimes, stone dusters are added at the discharge end to dust the roof, ribs and floor. AUXILIARY FANS AND SILENCERS Auxiliary fans are relatively smaller in size than the main fans and often have high rotational speeds (1800 -3000 rpm). Fans are selected based on pressure-quantity requirements and space restrictions only. Noise emissions are rarely considered during the selection stage. Installation of fans, ducts and other accessories is mainly based on best practices, which often do not include noise control. As a result, the operation of an auxiliary or local ventilation system normally produces excessive noise."

The hydrodynamic bearing was first described by, Reynolds in 1886, and has since been widely applied in motors, engines, compressors, hydroelectric turbines, and other machinery. For various reasons, the hydrostatic bearing currently predominates in the large, horizontal rotating machinery field (e.g. grinding mills). However, the current industry trend towards increasing size and energy efficiency has resulted in renewed interest in the advantages of hydrodynamic bearings. These advantages include structural improvements, reduced bearing friction, improved bearing life, improved transient characteristics, and reduced lubricant pump size and power requirements. In particular, the higher energy efficiency results in substantial savings on large machines. This paper describes some aspects of the design of large hydrodynamic bearings based on thirty years, of experience in the design of such bearings on grinding mills ranging in journal size from 2.1 m to 6.4 m, see Table 1.
