The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district's major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho's Coeur d'Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. Proof is typically provided by the feasibility study. Considerable man hours will be spent in assessing and evaluating data on the deposit, its environment, and the means of development. Impact studies must be made for various scales of operation, inclusion of by-products, new methods of treatment, deferent levels of integration, and infrastructure configuration. Examples of current materials handling cost estimates are provided from the ongoing investigation in which Amoco is a participant at Ok Tedi in Papua New Guinea and Gag Island in Indonesia.

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project's economic potential, if you can't finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today's price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today's dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today's project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes. "The construction of the three connecting tunnels between the east side and the west side of station C13, adjacent to the Vistula river, has a long and complex history, as they cross beneath one of Warsaw’s main road arteries (Wislostrada). After the attempt to excavate the first tunnel, the face of the tunnel collapsed on the night of August 13, 2012, and a volume of about 10,000 cubic meters of liquid mass (water, silty soil and sand) entered and flooded the west side of the station, which was filled with more than seven meters of material. Fortunately, the workers managed to escape, but machines and equipment were lost. This is the story of how the tunnels were completed, by adopting soil improvement, jet grouting, GRP bars, ground freezing and a careful choice of work steps. INTRODUCTION The Centrum Nauki Kopernik station on Line II of the Warsaw Underground is located alongside to the Vistula river (Figure 1). This station hereinafter is referred to as station C13.The station consist of three parts: the east and west part, and three connecting tunnels 40 meters in length with a large cross section (170 m2).. It includes the rails along the sides and the platform along the centre. The reason for the underground connection of two shafts with a tunnel is due to the presence of a road tunnel (Wislostrada, hereinafter called WS), which must be underpassed by the new metro line (Figure 2).The existing tunnel (Wislostrada) was built many years before, between diaphragm walls, and some foundation structures interfere with the underground tunnel. The challenge was to build the connectors without stopping the traffic of vehicles along the highway above. All works took place in very difficult geological and groundwater conditions due to the presence of Vistula alluvial deposits with poor mechanical characteristics. The soil profile consists of relatively loose sands on top, and silts overlying high plasticity Pliocene clays highly disturbed by the effects of the repeated over-sliding of glacial moraine deposits."

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

Statistically, the global coal mining industry suffered 12,489 fatalities in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900 to 2020. This review article discusses the occurrence, mechanism and explosibility parameters of coal dust explosions and presents a literature survey of the laboratory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation methods of studying them, as well as a comparison of the two methods.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

This paper reports on a study of the impact of fast growing new technologies on the market for copper over the next 15 to 20 years. The greatest threat is clearly the inroads of fiber optics on the traditional market for copper in communication cable. Opportunity areas identified include heat pumps, solar power and heat, desalination, electric vehicles and others. The overall impact of new technologies on copper is expected to be modestly positive if adequately encouraged by effective R&D.

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. Assembling consistent data for a 40-year time series is a challenge because of the many changes that have occurred in this period. In many cases, because of process improvements and consumer requirements, grades of materials change in a 40-year span. This can lead to a wide fluctuation in price data simply because of increased costs for premium grades. Sources for obtaining price data can also change during a 40-year period. Changing the data source also introduces anomalies in a time series. In some cases, published price data are not representative of the real value of the material and provide little basis for further analysis. For some industrial mineral commodities, there are only a few producers, and value and production data are considered proprietary. In the data presented in this chapter, every attempt was made to ensure that the data were as consistent and representative of the industry as possible. However, the factors mentioned above may have introduced inconsistencies in some of the data series. Many different factors influence trends for industrial minerals because of the diversity of end uses for these commodities. Trends in production and prices for most of the industrial minerals can be related to one or more of the following: changing demand or technologies in end-use industries, development of new end uses, the effect of environmental regulations, production and processing technology changes, energy costs, foreign competition and substitution by other materials, and production as a byproduct of other minerals. World economic conditions, such as recessions and inflation rates, also play a part in some production and price trends. Data for 40 years of production for industrial minerals in the United States are presented in [Table 1] in 10-year increments. Unit values for the industrial minerals, in actual and constant 1990 dollars, are shown in [Tables 2 and 3].

"Mine disasters, such as fires and explosions, can create a hazardous atmosphere due to the generation of carbon monoxide (CO). After a mine disaster, contaminated mine air can enter the refuge alternative (RA) as miners enter. Most built-in-place (BIP) RAs use an air delivery system to provide an unlimited supply of breathable air through a borehole which also serves to purge contaminants. In order to determine what levels of contaminants enter the RA, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Experimental Mine using groups of 5, 15, and 30 subjects entering the RA. The experiment used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas that was released into the air outside of the BIP RA to establish a uniform concentration. After the human subjects entered the BIP RA, the SF6 levels inside the RA were measured to quantify how much of the tracer gas entered the BIP RA. In tests conducted while the borehole air supply was left off as test subjects entered, interior contaminant levels were less than 3% of the exterior concentration. In tests conducted with the borehole air supply activated as test subjects entered, the interior contaminant levels were measured at less than 2% of the exterior concentration. Considering a mine disaster can result in 10,000 ppm of CO in the mine atmosphere, these percentages indicate that unhealthy CO concentrations that may lead to headaches, dizziness, and loss of judgement can occur in a BIP RA. This information will help mines make decisions concerning air locks, air delivery systems and a determination if purging mechanisms are necessary. INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and enforcement of mine safety standards (MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directs the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of RAs for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide RAs capable of maintaining a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either pre-fabricated or BIP shelters. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe, breathable atmosphere within RAs."

Under a contract awarded by the U.S. DOE-PETC, the Pennsylvania Electric Company and New York. State Electric and Gas Corporation are conducting a test program to evaluate and optimize the performance of a two-inch air-sparged. hydrocyclone (ASH) for cleaning fine coal. The test program is being conducted at the Homer City EPRI Coal Quality Development Center, utilizing Upper Freeport coal classified to minus 0.15 mm as the process feed material. A matrix of experiments has been conducted to establish the influence of significant design and operating variables (including overflow and underflow orifices, inlet slurry pressure, airflow rate, and reagent dosage) on the production of deep cleaned coal. Performance of the ASH is being compared to conventional froth flotation, utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. This paper focuses on work completed to-date to optimize the performance of the air-sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal. INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) have been evaluating advanced fine coal cleaning processes for the production of compliance grade coal (1.2 pounds S02/million Btu). Laboratory bench-scale froth flotation results were compared with results of advanced flotation processes as performed by various organizations, utilizing the same coal feed. Among the processes evaluated, the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) - developed by Dr. Jan Miller at the University of Utah - was considered to offer the best potential for retrofitting into an existing coal preparation facility because of the increased capacity per unit volume. The ASH has been shown to process over 100 times the throughput of conventional froth flotation cells. In May of 1988, Penelec/NYSEG was awarded a contract from the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy and Technology Center (DOE-PETC) to optimize the performance of a five cm (two inch) ASH for producing compliance grade coal from raw classified minus 0.150 mm (1.00 mesh) Upper Freeport coal, and to compare its performance with conventional froth flotation utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. The test work is being conducted at EPRI's Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania, utilizing a circuit processing 0.10 to 0.25 tons of coal per hour. Other members of the Penelec/NYSEG contract team include the University of Utah, Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., Davy Dravo, Kaiser Engineers, Ebasco Services, and Management and Technical Systems. ASH DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The ASH-2 System is a five cm ID (actually 4.76 cm) air-sparged hydrocyclone manufactured by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., under license from the University of Utah, for the purpose of research, evaluation and development. A schematic drawing of the air-sparged hydrocyclone is presented in Figure 1. Basically the air-sparged hydrocyclone consists of two concentric right-vertical tubes, a conventional cyclone header at the top, and a froth pedestal at the bottom. The inner tube is a porous tube through which air is sparged radially. The outer nonporous tube simply serves as an air jacket to provide for even distribution of air through the porous inner tube. The slurry is fed tangentially through the conventional cyclone header to develop a swirl flow in the radial direction. Air is sparged through the jacketed, inner porous tube wall and is sheared into small bubbles by the swirl flow. Hydrophobic particles in the slurry collide with these bubbles and, after attachment, are transported radially into a froth phase which forms on the cyclone axis. The froth phase is stabilized and constrained by the froth pedestal, thus moving towards the vortex finder of the cyclone header and discharged as an overflow product. Hydrophilic particles generally remain centrifuged in the slurry phase and are discharged as an underflow product through the annulus created by the froth pedestal.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

The properties of Neutra-Fix® and Neutra-Ment®, two new lime substitutes for treating acid mine drainage (AMD), have been compared with lime and Allcament®, two products presently in use for AMD treatment. The two new products are basically dolomitic byproducts and produce sludges that are more compact than those from lime. Sludge settling rates are faster than lime with iron concentrations after 24 hours that comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. Material utilization and optimum pH are reported.

Continuous miners (CM) are the most popular underground mining machinery in soft rock mining, playing a dominant role in the production of minerals ranging from coal to evaporites while finding increasing use in salt and potash mines. Along with the ongoing technological advancements in the mining industry and the underground equipment, new generation of CMs offer several new features that are designed to enhance their operational capabilities and production rate. In addition to new bits and bit holders, one of the areas of improvement is the cutterhead design through computer modeling and simulation based on the full scale cutting tests. This paper discusses the state-of the-art CM technology and development of the computer models for design analysis and performance estimation of CMs. The general approach used in the modeling, along with the results of field trials for several projects will be presented.

Speed and torque control of standard A.C. induction motors can be accomplished using a variety of devices ranging from mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical. Also, the motor can be specified as an A.C. wound rotor or D.C. motor using the associated controls. Normally, any one of these drive types can be adequately used to provide the torque control necessary to accelerate a conveyor belt system. The selection will depend on the economics, experience, and preference of the designer or end user. These drive types will be presented from a functional and performance viewpoint to assist in the understanding of the available technology.

Chuquicamata has added a new facility to their operations located in northern Chile. The plant demonstrates many unusual features including: underground collection of leachate, high copper tenors, extensive use of plastics and special corrosion resistant alloys.

During the last 10 years there have been many new developments in transport and handling equipment. Important technical and economic developments that can be used to reduce costs are; new terminal and materials handling concepts large river tows - 40,000 tons and 9000 hp towboats slurry loading and unloading of ocean vessels long distance pipelining of solids development of the shuttle train (unit train) large ocean barges ? 25,000+ tons ? pushed & towed 150,000 ton self-unloading super tankers - 300,000+ tons container shipping Some of these developments have been discussed at SME meetings in papers describing the transportation of minerals from new mines. But, only a few papers described improved transportation from older operations. Since transportation is a major part of the delivered cost for minerals, the economic benefits to be gained by putting new transportation developments to work are very substantial. Frequently good transportation planning and management makes the difference between a marginal ore body and a very profitable one.

The most widely used machines for grinding coal to the sizes prescribed for the pulverized coal firing of furnaces, boilers, and kilns are the vertical ball-race, roller-race and roller-bowl types of mills. However, the increased use of coal has led to an increased use of tumbling ball mills for coal grinding. Specifically, air-swept ball mills are now a part of many dry pulverized coal firing systems, offering the advantages over vertical mills of lower maintenance costs and the ability to handle strong or abrasive (high ash) coals. The current use of wet ball mills is to prepare coal-water slurries for direct combustion, although in time they may also find routine application for preparing slurry feed for coal gasifiers. In either application, wet ball mills ofer the advantages that coal grinding and wetting can be accomplished in a single step, and that the mills are readily used with fine wet screens to assure top size control in the slurry product. The simulation of tumbling ball mills with mathematical models has reached a fairly advanced stage, but the concepts have been applied only recently to coal grinding. As this paper will demonstrate, however, significant progress has been made in the use of models in ball mill circuit design for coal grinding. Included is a description of the techniques used for simulation, recommended parameter estimation methods, and demonstrations of process engineering calculations for large scale coal grinding circuits.
