In the interest of safety in metal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: That underground metal mines be equipped with a main fan in a fireproof housing, located preferably on the surface. The fan installation should be designed to ventilate the mine adequately throughout and to permit prompt reversal of direction of air flow. Many metal mines depend for ventilation upon natural flow of air, assisted by the exhaust from pneumatic drills and by compressed air blown into the workings. Others also ventilate separate headings or sections with fans and blowers. Relatively few have o mechanical ventilating system that controls the coursing of air throughout the mine.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Its estimated recoverable reserves in Fayette County are between 670 and 800 million tons. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in determining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ton of coal.

As part of the current research effort in shale-oil chemistry conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines, reduced chlorophyllins were prepared and pyrolyzed in an effort to identify the role of plant pigments and their decomposition products in the nitrogenous compounds found in the product of oil-shale pyrolysis. The properties of the chlorophyllin pyrolysates were related to the composition of the reduced chlorophyllins with particular emphasis on the amount and types of nitrogen compounds formed. A comparison based on the types of nitrogen compounds present was made betvJeen shale oil and the chlorophyll in pyrolsates. In order to make this comparison, a sample of shale-oil light distillate was separated into polar and nonpolar fractions, and a careful examination of the polar fraction was conducted to obtain an accurate picture of the types of nitrogen compounds present. The information gathered from these studies was used to evaluate reduced chlorophyllin as a model of oil-shale kerogen insofar as the production of nitrogen compounds was concerned. The results indicate that the reduced chlorophyllin does yield nitrogen products which are directly related to the nitrogenous compounds in shale oil, and it therefore represents a good model of shale-oil kerogen.

"At the request of the Anthracite Institute, the United States Bureau of Mines during February, March, and April 1935, made a field survey of commercial anthracite shipped from collieries scattered throughout the Anthracite regions. In all, 268 samples were taken at 41 breakers from Carbondale at the northern end of the field to Pottsville at the south. These collieries ship approximately 50 percent of the industry’s total production. The geographical distribution of the breakers sampled was as nearly as practicable in proportion to the tonnage of the companies from each region cooperating in the plan.The following are the weighted average analyses, by sizes, of the samples taken in this survey;"

The Bureau of Mines measured surface subsidence above four small coal mine room-and-pillar sections in southwestern Pennsylvania, to obtain preliminary information on the magnitude and character of selected parameters, such as angle of draw and maximum subsidence, which are essential to the development of subsidence prediction methods. Data varied widely at the four sites; this is attributed to local geologic and mining conditions. Surface deformation at each site was of a magnitude normally associated with severe structural damage.

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recognized that Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational illness in the United States. The use of heavy equipment, the drilling of rock, and the confined work environment are some of the factors that contribute to high levels of noise exposure to workers in the mining industry. Every day 80% of the nation’s miners go to work in an environment where the time weighted average (TWA) exceeds 85 dBA. Moreover, 25% of the miners are exposed to a TWA noise level that exceeds 90 dBA, the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). Furthermore, a NIOSH analysis of a large sample of audiograms showed that at age 50 approximately 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/non-metal miners have a hearing impairment. By contrast, only 10% of the non-occupational-noise exposed population has a hearing impairment at age 50 (Franks, 1997) (Stephenson, 1998). Simply stated, the majority of miners have a hearing loss by the time they retire. While NIHL is the most common occupational disease in this country, this problem is especially acute among workers in the mining industry. There are several barriers to reducing NIHL in the mining industry. These include: gaps in knowledge of noise dose/source relationships, the unavailability of effective noise controls, and needs for worker education and worker empowerment. A related issue is the difficulty of communication in noisy workplaces by both hearing impaired and normal hearing workers. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) at NIOSH has strategically developed a hearing loss prevention program for overcoming these respective barriers in an attempt to reduce NIHL in the mining industry. This paper provides an overview of the research program being conducted at the PRL.

Various methods of monitoring slip movements on bedding planes, as well as examination of rock burst damage in stopes, suggest that many rock bursts in the Lucky Friday Mine are closely associated with these movements. Slip displacements along bedding simultaneously reduce the physical dimensions of stopes and increase compressive stress along stope margins. Such changes, in turn, contribute directly to sudden failures of rock and cemented sandfill surrounding stopes. We believe that the reduction of rock burst hazards must be based on a clear understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. The current work emphasizes the mechanical role of wall rock movement and seismicity in generating conditions that promote rock burst damage. Based on our interpretations of these mechanisms, we briefly address several hypothetical practices that could influence rock burst hazards in similar mining situations. The overall goal of this research is to advance the NIOSH mission of improving the health and safety of the nation’s workers.

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation. Methane is the chief constituent of natural gas, and large quantities of it are also obtained in coke-oven gas and in the off-gases from cracking higher hydrocarbons. Perhaps the most important potential chemical use of methane is in the production of higher hydro- carbons, both aliphatic and aromatic. The results of a relatively large number of researches have been published in the technical and patent literature on the thermal decomposition of methane, the objective being an industrial process for the production of "antiknock" motor fuel. No industrially feasible process has, however, been developed. An inspection of the literature on this subject indicates that the chief difficulty in the way of accomplishing this object lies in controlling the decomposition so that undesirable products are eliminated. A considerable number of quantitative experiments have been reported, the results of which provide only a vague and confusing picture of the various steps in the thermal decomposition of methane. The reaction mechanism has not been subjected to rigorous fundamental study, and the necessity for such a study is obvious if further progress is to be made. The thermal decomposition is only one of the reactions of methane which are of potential industrial importance and which require further fundamental investigation. The oxidation, hydrolysis, and halogenation of methane are other reactions which must be studied further. In view of the importance of methane as a raw material for various industrially desirable products, it is appropriate that a survey be made of the important facts concerning the physical and chemical properties of methane which will serve as an aid in subsequent experi- mental work. No attempt will be made to present a complete chronological review, but rather a condensed critical description of the important literature will be presented.

A quasi-steady-burning channel model is used in this Bureau of Mines study to describe the conductive heat loss from an in situ coal combustor to the surrounding rock strata. The calculated heat losses are significantly greater than those previously estimated, but are still very acceptable from the viewpoint of energy recovery. Approximately 80% to 90% of the heat of combustion of the coal should appear as sensible heat of the gaseous exhaust, with exhaust temperatures in the range of 1,000° to 1,200° C. The effects of burning stoichiometry and channel size on the heat loss are also discussed in terms of the model. Such effects are shown to be compatible with an in situ combustion process even in thin seams. However, these results depend on gas leakage and adverse roof falls not being important factors in deter-mining the heat loss mechanism.

Gold continued to dominate mineral production in the group of volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, which comprise the British Commonwealth nation of Fiji. The Fijian mineral sector, however, remained of minor importance in terms of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment to the economy of the country, which was primarily agrarian with sugar as its mainstay. The Vatukoula gold-silver mine on the north side of the main island of Viti Levu remained the largest and most important mining operation, as well as Fiji's only operating metalliferous mine. In October, Western Mining Corp. (Fiji) Ltd. (WMCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-registered Western Mining Corp. Holdings Ltd., increased its interest in the Vatukoula joint venture from 10% to 20% by exercising its option with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., also of Australia. The assumption of mine management operations at Vatukoula in 1983, with its attendant influx of additional capital and technological expertise, enabled WMCF to increase both efficiency and output at the mine during 1984. Higher output was obtained owing to an increase in underground ore production, which was partly offset by a reduction in opencut tonnage, as well as to modifications in the recovery circuit. Rate of recovery increased from about 15% to over 82% of the gold contained in the ore and from about 40% to 45% of the contained silver.

The extremely sluggish oxidation of steel scrap was appreciably accelerated when the charge was pretreated in aqueous solutions of sodium metavanadate or sodium molybdate. The degree of oxidation acceleration was inversely correlated with the melting point of the promoter oxide possessing the highest valency. The magnitude of oxidation enhancement exhibited a systematic inverse dependence on the duration of pickling processes; mere dipping of the oxidizable charge in the vanadate bath was most effective. In general, the rate of steel scrap oxidation increased with increasing concentration of the pickling reagent. The results are explained on the basis of the hydrolytic decomposition of the pickling agent with subsequent slow interaction with the metal surface, coupled with the tendency of vanadium to form polyanions in alkaline media. The data not only served to elucidate the mechanism by which catastrophic oxidation takes place, but also showed that the accelerating species need not be alloyed with the oxidizable metal; surface impregnation by minute amounts of the accelerating species can still produce catastrophic effects.

Examination of numberous disasters , such as fires or explosions , and the evidence at coroner's inquests following such disasters in several States , have shown the writer how frequently men in charge of the operation and safety of mines have forgotten, or have failed to learn , details of safe mining practices , After securing a position of trust as superintendent , or a certificate of competency to act as shot -firer , fire boss , or mine foreman, some men seem to have felt it unnecessary to keep safety principles in mind , or to keep abreast of current progress in safety ; they have concentrated on getting out maximum tonnage at minimum cost . • In coroner's inquests , the testimony after disasters has shown that firebosses , foreman , and coal -mine superintendents are noticeably lacking in knowledge of the provisions of the State mining law relating to fans or doors , frequency of crosscuts , nature of stoppings necessary , electrical equipment , records of daily mine examinations , quantity of air required , or splitting and overcasting .

Airborne dust generation is one of the byproducts of coal mining, processing, and handling. The amount of airborne total dust (ATD, respirable size and larger) and airborne respirable dust (ARD) generated is of primary interest for designing the level of engineering controls needed for adequate dust abatement. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel with a roll crusher to identify relationships among crushing parameters, product size, coal rank properties, and airborne dust generation. Through the first series of experiments, the effect of primary and secondary breakage processes on both product size and airborne dust generation was examined. Through a second series of experiments, the effect of coal rank properties on product size and airborne dust generation was studied using a uniform crushing process with secondary breakage. Laboratory results indicate that secondary breakage of a particular coal notably increases the specific amount of ATD generated, while negligibly impacting the specific amount of ARD generated. A strong positive relationship was identified between the specific amounts of ATD and ARD generated during the primary breakage process (with minimal secondary breakage), but a negligible relationship was observed between the same two variables when secondary breakage was introduced into the crushing process. This indicates that most of the ATD and ARD is generated from the primary breakage, while secondary breakage has a more of an influence on generating additional amounts of larger sized ATD. Additional experiments involving the uniform crushing of eight different bituminous coals showed that the coal rank, expressed as the inherent moist fuel ratio (MFR = fixed carbon =(volatile x inherent moisture)), had diverse relationships between the product size created and the amount of airborne dust generated. As bituminous coal rank or MFR increased, the amount of coal product fines < 250 gm increased while the mass percentage of ATD and ARD liberated from these < 250 µm product fines decreased. Air dry loss (ADL) moisture in the coal was found to be inversely related to the dust cloud electrostatic field, influencing dust liberation from the coal product fines. Since the MFR was directly related to the dust cloud electrostatic field, opposite the ADL-electrostatic field relationship, the diverse relationships between the product size created and the amount of dust liberated from the < 250 µm product fines were explained. Finally, 12 to 14 times more ATD was generated as compared to the ARD generated during these experiments. These results should provide a fundamental basis for initial estimation of the airborne dust loading requirements of engineering control methods for coal crushing.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements were made on samples of Florida phosphate slimes to determine the optimum conditions of coagulation and precipitation in aluminum sulfate solutions. The addition of silica sand and other selected materials as mutual coagulants has demonstrated the practicability of coagulating two dissimilar particle systems by elimination of the repulsive double layers. By proper selection of the solution and its concentration, the reduction of the double layer to a zero point of charge causes coagulation and rapid precipitation of both particle systems. Confirmation was found in filtration tests and sedimentation tests.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory beneficiation tests on four samples of waste. granite sludge to devise a method of recovering silicon carbide (SiC). Froth flotation using creosote as a collector in an alkaline circuit resulted in concentrates containing over 91 pct SiC from each of the samples. Recoveries ranged from 43.1 to 86.6 pct. Single-stage flotation of sample A using a column flotation cell produced a concentrate containing 92.0 pct SiC with a recovery of 71.4 pct. Flotation using petroleum sulfonate as a collector in an acid circuit resulted in a concentrate containing 95 pct SiC from one of the waste granite products with a recovery of 97.5 pct .?

Reduce longwall shearer operators&apos; dust exposures by more effectively suppressing the dust generated by the upwind cutting drum. Approach Direct more of the shearer water supply to the upwind drum, thus reducing the shearer operator&apos;s exposure to respirable dust while making more efficient use of water. How Proportioning Permits More Efficient Use of Water On most longwall mining operations, the cutting action of the shearer drums is the primary source of dust. Al-though the amount of dust generated is directly related to the amount of coal and rock cut by the drum, the exposure or the shearer operators to dust depends more on their work position relative to the upwind drum. When cutting with the airflow, the upwind drum, cutting bottom coal and floor rock, is the primary generator of dust reaching the operators. The lead drum is downwind of both shearer operators and is thus of less concern. (See diagram). When cutting against the airflow, the lead drum is upwind-taking a full cut, including roof rock-and both shearer operators may be exposed to very high levels of respirable dust. Currently, water sprays mounted on the cutting drum provide the most effective method of controlling dust from longwall shearer drums, and all longwall mining operations use some type of bit flushing or cavity filling water spray system on the cutting drums. Bureau surveys of longwall operations, conducted as part of its research program to reduce respirable dust, have indicated that six longwalls with better than average compliance records use higher than normal water flowrates to the cutting drums. The average water flow to the shearers at these six operations was approximately 60 gpm-about 50 percent more water than is normally supplied to double-drum longwall shearers.

Dense-medium cyclone tests in 4-and 8-inch-diameter units have shown the ability of cyclones to make sharp separations down to 100 mesh when washing coals of a finer top size than normally fed to dense-medium cyclones. The reduced top size of the feed apparently allows the finer size particles to report to the proper product by reducing the effect of very coarse particles in the congested separation zone of the dense-medium cyclone.

Stresses that damage coal mine trailing cables were investigated to obtain a quantified description of cable-stress locations, magnitudes, and frequency of occurrence. Stresses occurring in operating mining sections were measured and observed. Answers to questions that arose during the underground investigations were pursued under controlled conditions, both in the field and in the laboratory. Cable-handling suggestions that minimize or eliminate the stresses are summarized in the form of recommendations to mine operators.
