During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following; questions are arising n the minds of coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when storing coal? In regard to the loss of heating value of coal in storage, tests made by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh Gas, and Sheridan Wyoming coals. "The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases is well recognized. The cause of these diseases however. Is still uncertain. To study this cause-effect relationship, It Is necessary to characterize the coal mine dust In terms of the quantity of dust present and mineral content of the dust. Dust samples were collected using a Portable Continuous Aerosol Monitor (PCAM) and 4-stage cassette Impactors at various locations in an upper Freeport seam coal mine In West Virginia. The samples were analyzed using an X-ray microdiffraction film technique and energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. This paper presents the results of the first phase of this characterization work which Includes determining the size distribution of the dust and the mineral content of the size intervals.IntroductionDiseases associated with dusts in coal mine environments continue to afflict miners in today's modem mines. These diseases still persist because, as Olishifski points out an employee rarely experiences exposures to a single environmental stress but rather to an Intricate Interplay of multiple stresses.(1) In the case of coal mining the multiple stresses are varying sizes of dust particles originating from coal imbedded minerals. Immediate roof strata bottom strata. Incombustible rock and the coal itself. The site of this Intricate Interplay Is the miner's lungs and the resulting diseases are a function of the composite dust exposures.The proper study of coal mine dust toxicity requires that the dusts used replicate existing coal and mineral dust compositions in their relevant size fractions. The purpose of this project is to develop the size and mineral content data necessary to support this ongoing toxicological effort.Existing coal mining standards and regulations also address total and respirable dust exposures. These dust terms refer to both the quality and quantity of the dust segment in the mine atmosphere. Dust quality addresses its coal and mineral content. whereas dust quantity Is described by mass per unit volume (mg/m3) The comprehensive characterization of coal mine dust exposures will enable revision of these standards and regulations to address the specific minerals and size fractions found to be toxic to human lung tissue."

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. Nevertheless, these measurements are important since the same perturbations would also affect a receiving loop oriented to receive the vertical magnetic field. Dr. Rankin pointed

Vapor-liquid equilibria data for 65-34-1 and 25-27-48 mole percent helium-nitrogen-methane mixtures are presented for 12 temperatures from 76.5° to 164° K and pressures from 100 to 1,200 psia. These data were obtained in a windowed phase equilibria cell equipped with a vapor recirculating pump. Isobaric and isothermal K-values are plotted for both mixtures. Two isometric plots are included.

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The Act of Congress authorizing the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines became effective July 1, 1910. One of the most important duties Congress delegated to the Bureau in this Act was the study of health and safety conditions in the mineral industries. Early investigations of these conditions revealed the need of prompt Care of injured employees, as, under the difficulties inherent in their occupation, seemingly unimportant wounds if not treated promptly might become infected and cause permanent disability or even death. Many seriously injured persons brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers ignorant of approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation have been caused suffering and have had injuries accentuated to such a degree as to bring about permanent disability or death. The need of general instruction in first aid thus became apparent. BRIEF HISTORY OF FIRST-AID WORK The education of miners in the United States in first aid probably was conducted systematically first by the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, first-aid training was carried on actively in Alabama and Indiana. Meanwhile, a general training campaign was carried on among industrial workers by the American Red Cross Society; when the Bureau of Mines began its nation-wide campaign of instructing employees of the mineral industries, the Red Cross turned over that part of its industrial training work to the Bureau but continued to cooperate by furnishing surgeons as judges in important first-aid contests and demonstr tions and assisted for a number of years in determining training methods.

Investigations of coking properties of Washington coals made before 1939 and studies of coking precesses indicated that PiaTceC:Countyx:oals, particularly those from the Vlilkeson-Carbonado--Fairfax area, yield excellent coke structures. ThE: ash content of the cokes W2S relatively high, sulfur ordinarily.was low, and the phosphorus, although variable, was not excessively high for some purposes. For years the coals had been coked in beehive and standard byproducts ovens and had entered Pacific coast markets for every purpose to which coke is adapted. Certain areas of the Roslyn bed of Kittitas County also were known to possess coals with coking properties. This coal had been employed largely for bench-gas manufacture and occasionally, blended with other coals, in byproduct ovens. Coals from other western Washington areas also had baen utilized for coking in the past but were not of immediate significance.

This paper describing the mining practice at Mine No. 5 of the Marquette range, Michigan, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, tend costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The top-slicing system of mining, has been used ever since the present operating company took control of the property in 1903, the main level and sublevel layout being chanced only as local conditions required and the use of mechanical equipment increased.

The smoke problem means different things in different places . In the neighborhood of industrial plants , especially smelting plants and cement plants , the term " smoke " is applied to material discharged from these plants , consisting of a mixture of solid particles ( dust ) , fume which has condensed from vapors , and gases of various kinds that are produced in the operations . In the ordinary use of the word , however , " smoke" refers to the visible material which escapes from the burning of coal . White smoke usually owes its color to small drops of water which have condensed from the water vapor that it formed in the burning of coal . When smoke is black, the color is due to unconsumed particles of carbon and usually when the smoke problem is spoken of , it is this black smoke produced in the burning of coal that is referred to , Many inquiries in regard to smoke are addressed to the Bureau of Mines , and the following brief summary has been prepared as covering the usual questions . For references to the smoke problem in England , I am indebted to a recent interesting paper on this topic by David Brownlie .

One of the primary means of .control of health hazards from respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is through design and operation of mines to meet mine health and safety regulations and recommended practices. A U.S. National Academy of Sciences study concluded that for significant progress in coal mine dust control, research should be directed more toward obtaining fundamental understanding of the origin, transport and characteristics of respirable coal mine dust. Theoretical and experimental studies on transport of dust in mine airways, particularly coordinated efforts to validate theory with practice, are scarce. Some empirical models, developed on the basis of experimental data, are available but these models cannot be applied to new .conditions. The purpose of this paper· is to present the results of theoretical and experimental studies on the transport and deposition of dust in mine airways. This study is a part of an on-going research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust. In the paper, the assumptions of the modeling phase of the project and the development of a convection-diffusion equation for dust transport in mine airways will be outlined. The important aspect of the modeling effort.is the capture of the deposition phenomenon. The experiments performed under controlled conditions in a typical mine airway as well as under normal mine operating conditions will be discussed. The comparison of the model predictions ·with experimental results will be made to identify critical areas of agreements and deviations. The implications of the findings and areas for further research and development will be identified.

This report describes a study designed to evaluate a proposed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation as performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a "pull test" equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

The Bureau of Mines, in its investigations of respiratory apparatus for use in mines and allied industries; tests equipment that is voluntarily submitted by manufacturers in accordance with published schedules of tests. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. Approval certificates are issued for apperatus that meets the bureau's specifications, and the manufacturer is permitted to mark his equiment with a seal showing that it has been approved as "Permissible." A complete list of per- missible self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, gas masks, and hose masks tested prior to January 1, 1930, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 62309. The present list includes all equipment tested and approved prior to July 1, 1930.

A study was made of the United States Bureau of Mines' chlorine-oxygen leaching process for complex sulfide concentrates. The investigation sought to determine the kinetic order and IT mechanisms involved in the reactions betweens sphalerite, and galena with chlorine. The influence of copper on the extraction rates was also studied. It has been shown the rates of reaction of chlorine in aqueous solutions with sphalerite and galena are both zero order at 373K with the rate limiting step being the chemical reaction. Addition of cupric chloride increased the extractions of both lead and zinc.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook contains injury experience and related employment information for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1962. Injury experience is measured by the number of injuries sustained per million man-hours of exposure in each industry. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in volume III of the Minerals Yearbook. COAL The injury-frequency rate for the coal-mining industry of the United States increased less than 2 percent, according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines. The number of fatal and nonfatal injuries per million man-hours in 1962 was 45.86, based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines.

Gold was found in samples collected from Pleistocene and Holocene stream and terrace deposits. Approximately 15,000 cu yd (11,400 cu m) of small and discontinuous terrace and stream gravel deposits in the study area are composed of material derived from sedimentary and granitic rocks. The detritus is subangular to subrounded, and poorly sorted, ranging from boulder to sand size. Gold values in samples collected averaged 8.2 cents per cu yd (gold value of $500 per oz). Pan concentrates and rock chip samples collected from reported mineralized zones showed an absence of economic minerals. Stream placer deposits are uneconomic. No potential was observed for metallic or nonmetallic minerals in the La Panza study area. No potential exists for gas, oil, or coal resources.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated recovery of manganese from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slags because the slags represent a large potential resource of a metal for which there is no domestic production. BOF slags were leached using fluosilicic acid, a byproduct of the fertilizer industry. Manganese and iron were extracted as soluble manganous and ferrous fluosilicates while the calcium and magnesium remained in the tailings as insoluble fluorides. Treating the pregnant liquor with sodium chloride, precipitated sodium fluosilicate (Na2Sif6) which was recovered as a byproduct. Manganese and iron were precipitated as hydroxide-carbonate salts with the addition of sodium carbonate to the treated liquor. Recoveries for manganese and iron were 73 to 83 and 67 to 70 pet, respectively.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeSz) concentrates produced on the Lead Belt of Missouri typically contain 28 pct Cu and from 0.5 to 1.5 pct each of nickel and cobalt. Most of the nickel and cobalt are present as the mineral siegenite, (Ni,Co)3S4, almost none of which is recovered presently. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has been conducting research on the chalcopyrite to produce a marketable fraction enriched in cobalt and nickel. Ferric chloride leaching of various chalcopyrite (copper) concentrates has yielded residues containing from 10.2 to 16.2 pct Ni and 8.3 to 11.4 pct Co with recoveries of approximately 79 pct. In another approach, laboratory froth-flotation tests have been conducted to investigate the effects of regrinding, roasting, baking, and steaming prior to flotation, with a variety of reagents. The best laboratory results were obtained after regrinding the copper concentrate to 94 pct minus 400 mesh and floating the chalcopyrite at natural pH (6.5) with 0.48 pound of sodium diethyldithiophosphate and 0.01 pound of sodium cyanide per ton of concentrate. This procedure yielded a tailings assaying 20.4 pct Cu, 5.2 pct Ni, and 3.45 pct Co. The tailings contained 67.2 pct of the nickel and cobalt and 15.9 pct of the copper originally in the copper concentrate; the remainder of the values reported to the flotation concentrate, which analyzed 29.6 pct Cu. To verify the laboratory flotation results, a 60 kg/hr process demonstration unit (PDU) was constructed in the Cominco American Magmont mill, Bixby, Mo.

The mining law of the Belgian Congo does not cover the Province of Katanga nor the District of Kivu (in Eastern Province). Regulations of the Comité Spécial du K tanga are in force in Katanga and those of the Comité National du Kivu in Kivu. The three laws differ only in detail, and grants made by the Comité Spécial du Katanga or by the Comité National du Kivu must be approved by the Ministry of Colonies. The following résumé is designed to coordinate the three sets of regulations.

The Bureau of Mines for a number of years has been carrying on an investigation of properties of crude petroleum from producing, fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere, and has published a series of reports on these fields, including oil fields of Oklahoma2. All pipelines used to transport liquid fuels over coal mines are potentially hazardous; however, this publication deals only with dangers in transporting gasoline. Since transporting gasoline by this method is an established practice, the hazards connected therewith should he recognized by coal-mine operators and pipeline companies so that every known precaution may be used to reduce and keep the hazards to a minimum. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of coal-mine operators and employees, pipeline-company officials, and other interested persons to the explosion and fire hazards that arise from seepage of gasoline into underground mines. A hazard is not only presented in an individual mine when gasoline enters underground workings; but, in cases where mines are interconnected, a hazard exists in mach such mine.
