Barrick's Zaldivar operation in Chile produces copper by heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The heap consists of a dynamic pad, and its stacking and operating conditions have changed over its 11 years of operation. These changes have included pad re-mining midway through the cycle, tightening of the irrigation drip lines, an increase of the coarseness of the particles, and an increase of the heap height. This paper reviews the heap operating data to understand the effects of these changes on the kinetics and recovery of copper minerals. Field tests demonstrated that neither re-mining nor tightening the irrigation grid added value for both low and high grade oxide and sulfide ores. The P80 of the feed ore was increased by 0.8 mm, which did not reduce the copper recovery of oxide and sulfide ores. The increase of the heap height above 8 m lowered moderately the copper recovery from sulfide minerals, and very slightly the recovery from oxide minerals. Despite the lower recovery, the higher tonnage stacked in the taller heap increased the copper output. Optimizing the chemistry of the agglomeration and feed solution holds more promise for increasing the copper recovery than the above physical changes.

Over the years, several sources have stressed the need to better integrate the underground mine design and planning processes. The belief is that with better integration, better designs and plans will result - designs that are ?optimized?. Some researchers have focused their efforts on data integration, others have looked at closing the loop between production control & monitoring with mine planning & scheduling. In spite of all these efforts, fully integrated applications combining geological modeling, stope design and geomechanics, mine planning and scheduling, rock extraction and material handling system design, mine support systems, economic analysis with production control do not yet exist for the underground hard rock mining industry. There are several likely explanations - some economic, some technical. It is certain that the design and planning processes are interrelated and interdependent and thus are extremely complex to describe and understand. The mining engineer has an appreciation of the complexities involved - but how does he convey this knowledge to a programming team responsible for developing an integrated design & planning system. This paper will focus on software engineering methods, and other possible approaches, to describe and manage the complexities inherent in the underground mine design and planning process and the development of an integrated computerized system.

"I wish to thank you and your organizers for inviting me to address you at this point in time when we are all concerned for the future of the mineral industry in Canada.My topic ""Some Initiatives of Government Assistance to Industry Applicable to Mineral Processing"" is purposely limited in scope. To cover the entire range of initiatives in detail would take me all day, and at best, would be a mere recital of program titles, and a one sentence summary of the contents of the program. As you know, OREE or Regional Economic Expansion, is in the process of being amalgamated with elements of the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. We will become Regional Industrial Expansion or ORIE. If the name Canada Dry becomes popular, I don't think we will object as we hope to become a good mixer. The entire departmental thrust has been re-evaluated, and is in the process of being re-constituted to better serve the nation, and industry as a whole. Amalgamation of the industrial, trade promotion and marketing support skills of IT&C, with the regional development orientation and decentralization program delivery mechanisms of DREE, will, it is believed, provide better support to industry on a national and regional basis."

Abstract - Metalliferous precipitates from submarine hydrothermal discharges have been investigated at four inshore locations off Milos in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. The fine fraction of the sediments shows considerable variability in the concentrations of elements frequently associated with hydrothermal activity. Manganese varies from 30 ppm to 2500 ppm, encompassing the entire range of values found off Santorini also in the Hellenic Arc. Iron occurs in lower concentrations than off Santorini and Yali, while other elements often associated with hydrothermal activity such as Pb, Zn, As, and Cu also show enrichments in sediments from the hydrothermal vent areas. Selective leaching studies have shown that most elements are variably distributed between the different phases of the sediments but with enriched Pb, Zn, and Mn mainly in easily soluble secondary phases. Hydrothermal inputs are strongest at Palaeochori Bay, less at Voudia Bay and lowest at the Airport Springs and Rivari. The weathering of sulfide and possibly other orebodies is also thought to contribute to some of the elements enriched, while background concentrations are largely supplied from detrital sources.

In the flotation of Rare Earth Element (REE) bearing minerals, oxalic acid is reportedly acting both as a depressant and pH modifier. Testing has established the significance of oxalic acid in the flotation process however its specific role in either the recovery or selectivity of REE over their gangue minerals is not well understood. Pulp pH reduction trials with alternative acids have not shown the same effect on the REE mineral recovery or the depression of gangue phases. This work examines the effect of oxalic acid on the surface of gangue minerals (quartz and carbonates (dolomite and calcite)) in a series of conditioning tests. Gangue surface analyses by TOF-SIMS indicate that oxalic acid inhibits the transfer of secondary ions generated during the conditioning process from one mineral phase to another. In this regard, the oxalate anion acts to fix ions in solution through chelation, limiting their participation in surface adsorption.

Abstract -There are a number of sedimentary exhalative massive sulfide (SEDEX) deposits in the Proterozoic Langshan-Zhaertai rift at the western segment of the northern margin of the North China platform in China, including more than ten large, medium and small deposits located in a belt of 300 km EW by 50 km to 100 km NS, with large Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, and S reserves. In several representative SEDEX deposits in the rift, the mineralizing elements are prominently zoned, horizontally or vertically, with Cu decreasing but Pb increasing from west to east, Cu decreasing but Zn increasing from bottom to top, and Zn restricted to the bottom half. The ore-hosting rocks, characterized by a clear manganese halo, have developed a polymetallic mineralization in positive relation with their carbon contents. Their isotopic aspects are: ?34S has relatively large positive values, fluctuating between +5‰ and +35‰, compared with Pb isotopic compositions which are less variable, with a model age of 1600 Ma to 1800 Ma, showing that they are mantle-derived. The mineralizing materials were associated undoubtedly with the contemporaneously faulting events in the rift. The deposits owe their origin to seafloor exhalation, with sedimentary rocks as their hosts.

Electrospark Deposition (ESD) is a pulsed-arc micro-welding process characterized by using high current electrical pulses, of a short duration, to deposit an electrode material on a metallic substrate. The short duration of the electrical pulse allows for a low heat input over the substrate and an extremely rapid solidification of the deposited material. As a result, the ESD is capable of a wide variety of microstructures like micro-segregationfree solid solutions, nanostructured grains, metastable structures, and amorphous phases. The present work shows a microstructural analysis of rapidly solidified Al-Ni alloys coatings by the ESD process. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were performed to present the microstructural evolution as a function of the welding parameters. The phases and non-equilibrium metastable structures present in the alloys, and their distribution, were found to be a sensitive function of the alloy composition; hence its formation is governed primarily by thermodynamic considerations.

Falling asleep at the wheel of a moving vehicle is not only dangerous but avoidable. It is implicated in up to 30% of all road fatalities in general and up to 65% of mining incidents involving haulage trucks. These types of crashes normally result in serious injury and/or fatality due to the lack of breaking that occurs. However, when a 300 tonne haul truck has a sleep related crash it is not only the safety of the driver that has a high price but also the commercial impact on the mines? productivity and efficiency. We have been developing our ASTiD technology which stands for the Advisory System for Tired Drivers to seamlessly integrate in to Modular Mining?s Dispatch system to provide real-time early warning fatigue risk management. The benefits being driver shift optimisation, sustained productivity and of course less accidents. By monitoring the drivers alertness levels in real-time using ASTID, the Dispatcher becomes empowered to make critical, management decisions that will ultimately prevent serious injury or loss of life and the driver gets to stop when he needs to and not just when he is supposed to. This paper shows how this integrated solutions works.

Technical Sn- bronzes tend to form both macrosegregations and microsegrega¬tions during DC-casting due to the particular thermodynamic properties and kinetics of phase transformation. As a result a heterogeneous cast microstructure forms that is some¬times a reason for a decrease in workability. The extent of macrosegregations in DC-casting can effectively be influenced by casting parameters like casting velocity, primary cooling or inlet geometry which in fact change the relative flow between the melt and the forming solid. In order to understand the influence and interaction of the related phenom¬ena, simulation methods are applied. The solidification of the strand as well as the forma¬tion of macrosegregation are simulated with a two phase volume averaging model. The velocity field of the melt flow is explicitly calculated by solving the corresponding mo¬mentum conservation equations. Within the mushy zone the local formation of microseg¬regations in the presence of feeding flow is estimated. The thermodynamics of the Cu-Sn system is accounted for and it is distinguished explicitly between interface and average concentrations. To investigate the influence of feeding flow on the formation of mac-rosegregations, a study has been performed. Based on this result, the phenomena of mac¬rosegregations are described in a detailed discussion.

Interactions between A356 aluminum (Al-Si alloy) and dense fused silica (FS) riser tubes used for low-pressure casting of aluminum alloys were evaluated using a sessile drop approach. The tubes have a short service life, but cost and thermal shock resistance make them an effective solution. The main problem encountered during use is the reaction of aluminum with silica to form alumina and silicon, which causes failure. Tests have been conducted on as-fired (uncoated) and modified (coated) tubes. Experiments were carried out in a horizontal furnace at 1225°C under argon to minimize the effect of the aluminum oxide on the interactions at the alloy-silica interface. Images of the drop were acquired and contact angle values were estimated for uncoated and coated samples, but no significant differences in the contact angles were observed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of cracks at the interface between the reaction zone and the unreacted silica. The presence of reaction products (silicon in the reacting alloy and aluminum in a reaction zone between the alloy and the unaffected silica) has been confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy. A two layer coating system was found to be effective in reducing penetration of the aluminum alloy.

Coating systems that yield a thermally grown oxide (TGO) protective layer have been proposed as a potential method for extending the lifecycle of components exposed to high temperature corrosion. This is particularly relevant to the petrochemical industry, where any reduction in corrosion rates can yield substantial cost reductions. The primary goal of this project is to develop a coating repair procedure and to investigate the oxidation performance of the repaired location. Electrospark deposition (ESD) was used to repair spalled segments of TGO grown on MCrA1Y substrates using various electrodes possessing mixed crystal structures. Specifically, electrodes of NiCoCrA1Y (BCC-FCC mixtures) and CoNiCrA1Y (FCCBCC mixtures), were deposited and oxidized to develop the TGO using a heat treatment of 24 hours at 1000°C in air. This presentation will focus on the microstructural evolution of the base metal and ESD repair on damaged area, in both as- deposited and oxidized forms. Results of SEM and XRD analysis will be presented.

"The Ainsworth mining camp is on the west side of Kootenay lake; British Columbia; 14 miles south of the town of Kaslo. It is in one of the oldest mining districts in central British Columbia; for mining started there in 1888. Its principal production was between 1905 and 1920. Activity since then has been sporadic. According to available records; some 222; 000 tons of ore had been produced from the camp up to 1942.GENERAL GEOLOGY Bedrock in the district consists of a succession of quartzite, quartz-mica schist, hornblende schist, and limestone of Late Precambrian, Carboniferous, and Triassic age. Most of the hornblende schists are of volcanic origin but some formed from related intrusions. The Nelson granodiorite batholith of Jurassic age borders the camp on the west. There is also a series of basic dykes of much later age."

Various types of thin-walled structures have been frequently used as energy absorbers to mitigate the adverse effects of impact and hence protect the vehicle structure under consideration when subjected to different loading conditions. Compression tubular structures that buckle in a progressive manner, can be used to advantage, providing inexpensive and versatile, but nevertheless weight and stroke efficient energy absorbers. In this paper quasi-static nonlinear finite element simulations are performed to study the effects of number of corners of the cross-section, wall thickness, plastic hardening rate of material, foam-filler and load angle on deformation mode and mean crushing force of tube. Crush strength increases as the number of corners of the cross-section increases, though it almost saturates for the number of corners beyond 11. Higher plastic hardening rate stabilizes the collapse pattern. Foam-filled tubes seem to have higher critical load angles in oblique loading and display a more stable and gradual decrease in mean load over the transition region. Substantial decrease in the initial peak load and dynamic load at any a given deflection was observed as the load angle increases. The investigation of bitubal arrangements and Multi-cell tubes reveals that these may be preferable to monotubal specimens due to the presence of the inner profiles. In addition, a comparison is conducted between the numerical and experimental results of the mean forces of some special angle elements. Good agreement is obtained.

"Adopted in 2003, theses guidelines are intended to assist the Qualified Person(s) in the planning, supervision, preparation and reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserve estimates. The report is divided into two broad sections “General Guidelines” appropriate for most metals and “Guidelines Specific to Particular Commodities” for potash, industrial minerals, uranium and coal. “These guidelines are reference in the Companion Policy of NI 43-101 with a statement that a qualified person classifying a mineral deposit as a mineral resource or mineral reserve should follow them.”Executive SummaryThe following is a summary, in table format, of the main elements of the Estimation Best Practice Committee's report ""Estimation of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Best Practice Guidelines"". While the summary table is provided for convenience, the Committee recommends that the report be read in its entirety and the table summary not be used as a stand alone document. "IntroductionGravity concentration, the separation of two or more minerals due to the difference in their relative specific gravity and usually in a fluid medium, is the oldest recorded form of mineral processing.The principles of gravity concentration were known to, and practiced by, the ancients and Hoover's commentary to De Re Meta/lied'' notes many early references.Over the centuries, as direct smelting ores became more and more uncommon, the mineral processing industry developed and along with it many varied methods of concentration. Gravity concentration declined rapidly in importance in the early twentieth century, and it is only in the last decade that its advantages are being re-evaluated.A significant proportion of ores are processed by gravity; a large proportion being in the iron and coal industries<'>, or in the treatment at very high volume of relatively coarse alluvial deposits. The tin dredges of South East Asia and Beach sand plants of Australia are prime examples.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. Published data on thermodynamics of tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in development of thermodynamic solution models of melts. The developed model/database was applied in modelling the Sn deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste melting processes. The results show that Sn can be removed from the matte through evaporation of various volatile Sn species (with SnS the most volatile) and slagging during copper smelting. The Sn removal increased with increasing matte grade due to the increased gas and slag volume. In the e-waste smelting process, fluxing strategy was developed for smelting e waste to produce a slag with reasonable liquidus and viscosity. Modelling results show that very low amounts of Sn reported to the gas phase due to low S, hence low SnS partial pressure in the system. The black copper produced could contain a few percent of Sn depending on the oxygen potential. The Sn in the black copper could be removed to the slag phase during anode refining. INTRODUCTION Tin is an impurity element commonly found in copper ores, which will be dispersed into various solid, liquid, and gaseous streams during the pyrometallurgical processing of copper. Tin alloy is widely used in electronic soldering due to its low melting point. The growth in treatment of recycled e-waste through primary and secondary copper smelting has led to an increased tin input to the smelting system. Therefore, the deportment of tin between phases is of great interest to the operators of modern smelters. Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) is a thermodynamic package developed by CSIRO for simulating reactions between phases in multi-component and multi-phase systems (Zhang et al., 2002). Over the years the capability of the MPE model has been extended to cover the behavior of a large number of elements in high temperature system (Chen, Zhang, Wright, & Jahanshahi, 2006). In the present paper, the thermodynamic data on tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in the development of a database for Sn slag, alloy and matte phases. The model/database was applied in modelling the tin deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste smelting processes. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the chemical behaviours of tin in high-temperature copper processing and e-waste smelting.
