"The Ontario Geological Survey completed a regional till sampling project between 1984 and 1988 in the Black River Matheson (BRiM) area of northeastern Ontario. The project was designed to aid mineral exploration in the area by documenting the Quaternary stratigraphy and by providing a database of till geochemistry. This paper summarizes the results from the sonic overburden drilling component of the BRiM project carried out in areas of thick drift (> 5 m). Results from till sampling in areas of thinner drift (<5 m) have been presented in a separate paper. Approximately 1100 till samples were collected from 225 sonic drill holes. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (>3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically and visible gold grains were recovered by panning.Gold and other multielement geochemical data were plotted using proportional symbols to highlight anomalous areas and to demonstrate how to evaluate and interpret a very large geochemical dataset. Thresholds for identifying anomalous concentrations of Au in till samples, defined using the 95th percentile, are 1500 ppb and 12 ppb for the heavy mineral and fine fractions, respectively. The heavy mineral fraction of older ti1ls and to a lesser extent, Matheson Till, display a number of significant gold anomalies in the study area, which in a few cases, are associated with base metal anomalies. The vertical position of gold anomalies in Matheson and older ti1ls varies from directly on bedrock to several meters above the bedrock surface and can provide information of relative ice transport distances."

"The Fox Mine has been producing copper/ zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978all production was derived from longhole open stopes. In June 1978, a trial stope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both stopes and pillars at Fox Mine.When production blasting was started in the first stope, the biggest problem encountered was the production of large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas as a result of secondary sulphide dust explosions. This gas generation resulted in lost production time and caused minor damage to underground installations to the blast level, and to the headframe. Sulphur dioxide generation has been noted in secondary drawpoint blasts and, on rare occasions, in drift rounds.This paper discusses the occurrence of the sulphur blasts and the practices and precautions used to prevent their reoccurrence at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox minesite is located 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. With production startup in 1970, Fox Mine is owned and operated by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited.The Fox orebody occurs as a large lenticular zone of semi-massive sulphides approximately 1,500 feet long and 15 to 100 feet wide running east and west. A review is presented of the fundamental differences between the Superior and Churchill geologic provinces. Structure, lithology, grade of metamorphism and a single recent age determination suggest that the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake belts are remnant blocks of originally Superior rocks lying within the Churchill province. Major mineral belts occur along the main boundary between the Superior and Churchill provinces (the Thompson -Moak Lake nickel belt) and within the remnant Superior blocks inside the Churchill province (Fiin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake). During the Hudsonian orogeny, metamorphic gradients must have existed across the Churchill-Superior boundary and between the remnants of Superior rocks and the enclosing gneisses of the Churchill province. It is possible that not only the unusual nickel deposits of the Thompson belt but also the base metal deposits of the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake districts are due to redistribution, or diffusion and migration of metals to areas of lower-grade metamorphism during the Hudsonian orogeny.

"Sulphide ores under certain circumstances will react with explosives to generate an autocatalytic chemical reaction. This reaction is exothermic and results in the production of large volumes of poisonous gases and creates an unsafe, unstable condition with the possibility of a low energy deflagration or even a detonation of the loaded hole. This paper outlines the conditions that need to exist for such a reaction to take place and the precautions necessary to minimize or eliminate the problem in areas of reactive ore. A special case study involving a northern Ontario mine will be detailed.IntroductionOne of North America&apos;s leading underground gold producer&apos;s processes over 6500 tonnes of ore per day from an orebody containing high concentrations of sulphides. During the last few years, geophysical methods have been introduced to aid mining geologists and mining engineers in locating mineral deposits. These methods have been developed as the result of investigations of various physical characters of minerals and rocks. In prospecting for ore-bodies, electrical methods have proved most successful. These methods are based on the great differences in electrical properties, and especially in conductivity, between ore minerals and rock minerals. The electrical resistance of the common minerals, rocks, and ores in ohms per cubic céntimeter is given in the following table: [ ] The first attempts at electrical prospecting were based on observing currents of polarization around certain ore bodies, which currents it was possible to measure. This method has been developed by Prof. Schlumberger and has been utilized by him successfully. He is represented on this continent by Mr. Sherwin Kelly, who has successfully operated the method here.

The Autogenous milling of ores holds an increasing attraction as the focus moves towards reducing energy usage, both direct and embodied in grinding media. However, most of the early AG mills were converted to SAG for improved stability and increased throughput. This imposes a huge penalty in steel grinding media consumption. The LKAB iron ore operations in Sweden process highgrade magnetite through fully-autogenous milling lines to a final product P80 of about 45µm. The outcomes of P9O AMIRA research surveys, covering a wide range of mill fillings and throughputs and with different feed blends, are presented. Insights are provided on operational strategies, opportunities, the influence of feed size control and balancing the blend of competent gangue and softer magnetite. Areas of importance in the successful operation and control of energy-efficient autogenous circuits are highlighted.

Mineral resources estimation comprises basically two stages: (i) data collection, analysis and validation, and (ii) the estimate of the grades and tones of the deposit. The most applied method for sampling survey in mineral exploration is rotary drilling with total core recovery. High drilling costs make borehole geophysical logging attractive to obtain the maximum possible information from each borehole helping to understand ore intersections, grades variability, limits of the deposits and continuity of the mineralization. In this paper, borehole geophysical logging was used to enhance the sampling survey and to derive grades indirectly (without lab analysis) with a certain amount of uncertainty. Indicator kriging (IK) was the estimation method used, as it is adequate to incorporate the uncertainty associated with the geophysical derived grade values. The results were compared to the conventional procedures using grades determined via core analysis and ordinary kriging. Borehole geophysical logging proved to be efficient to define the essential features of ore deposit and IK provided results with acceptable precision and accuracy if compared to the model provided by ordinary kriging.

It deals mainly with the long tailing and concentrate lines. Subject matter is arranged under the following headings: pumps, lines, instrumentation, system design, operation.IntroductionThe Inco Metals Company is the mining and processing section of INCO LIMITED. In the Ontario Division, it operates 13 mines, 5 mills, a smelter, an iron ore plant and 3 refineries, all engaged in the mining and recovery of nickel and copper. This paper describes the slurry pumping practices in the mills of the Ontario Division.The PumpsWe have in our Sudbury area mills most of the available types of slurry pumps, in sizes from one inch up to twelve inches, a total of about 400 pumps. The rubber-lined, horizontal shaft pump is; most numerous. However, for certain applications, the hard-metal pump is essential, and is becoming more popular for general mill service. Two types of vertical shaft pumps are used. There are a few diaphragm pumps on small thickeners, but the larger thickeners have centrifugal pumps either directly connected to the under-flow or with one pump handling several gravity underflows. We have not used piston or plunger pumps in our mills."

Activated carbon is proven to be able to catalyze arsenic oxidation in aqueous solution under acidic conditions. A commercially available granular coconut shell based activated carbon (AC) has been evaluated for catalysis of arsenic oxidation in this study. The rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) has been developed to simulate and predict the performance of a carbon-based arsenic treatment system in a pilot scale reactor. Effects of residence time, aeration rate, and initial arsenic concentration in the influent solution on the AC catalysis of arsenic oxidation under dynamic and continuous conditions were studied by manipulating these parameters during RSSCTs. The effectiveness of the AC on arsenic oxidation was examined over the course of constant diffusivity based RSSCT operation. Residence time and initial arsenite concentration are proven to be the most effective impacting parameters on the arsenic oxidation process. For the 218 min residence time, the highest steady-state arsenic oxidation efficiency achieved was 98% with 1 g/L As(III) being treated at pH=1 under 0.05 L/min oxygen aeration. In a long-running RSSCT, the oxidation efficiency did not seem to deteriorate over a course of 666 hours operation, corresponding to 13986 mL total influent throughput volume. INTRODUCTION Arsenic is toxic to both animals and plants and inorganic arsenicals are proven carcinogens in humans. The increased extraction of low grade and complex mineral resources has introduced high ratios of arsenic into metallurgical processes. Discharge of arsenic by acid mine drainage resulting from mining activities has added intensive pressure on the need for proper treatment (Lawrence & Higgs, 1999). Since trivalent arsenite is more toxic and has lower affinity to solid surfaces for adsorption, many treatment systems initiate with an oxidation step to convert arsenite to arsenate and reach the ultimate immobilization of arsenic by the following precipitation of arsenate (Nazari, Radzinski, & Ghahreman, 2016). Scorodite precipitation has been studied extensively as a means of arsenic immobilization due to its high stability and negligible potential of releasing arsenic (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1997). As a stable ferric arsenate mineral, crystalline scorodite can contain up to 30 wt% arsenic (Paktunc, Dutrizac, & Gertsman, 2008). Arsenic must be in its pentavalent oxidation state in order for scorodite to be precipitated via oxidizing ferrous ions (Clancy, Hayes, & Raskin, 2013).

The increasing complexity of the ores composition worldwide calls for suitable collectors with specific properties, such as selectivity, wettability, and in regard to current regulations, environmental sustainability. Therefore, collectors have to satisfy many features to improve the efficiency of flotation processes. Cellulose nanocrystals gain more and more interest due to the versatile synthesis routes which enable the integration of specific functional groups and components with different degrees of hydrophobicity within the molecular structure. Consequently, cellulose nanocrystals can be employed in flotation processes as depressant or collector molecules, respectively. Nonetheless, the usage of cellulose nanocrystals is still limited due to a lack of the characterization of nanocrystal-mineral interactions and the change of the surface wetting properties of minerals after adsorption phenomena between nanocrystals and minerals. In these studies, butyl-amine cellulose nanocrystal (BAC) and quartz are used as model system to investigate physicochemical properties of both, BAC and quartz, and examine the applicability of BAC in flotation processes. Therefore, the surface charge distribution and electrophoretic mobility of BAC and quartz are investigated and compared to understand the effect of electrostatic interactions between BACs, and BAC and quartz. Based on this, the adsorption of BAC on quartz is examined. Finally, microflotation experiments test the efficiency of BAC to be used in flotation processes. The flotation response is correlated to the specific surface charge of BAC revealing the dominant effect of surface charges on effective particle-bubble adhesions.

"UNTIL the last few years, the collieries of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, while highly mechanized as to the cutting and transportation of the coal, still relied on the hand-loading of coal from the seam onto face conveyors. In these circumstances it was possible to assure that no large proportion of extraneous materials would be loaded with the coal, and the product could be quite well cleaned for the market by screening and hand-picking.Within the past few years, however, the Company has introduced an intensive programme of mechanization which will result in the virtual elimination of hand-loading .of coal. It has been the experience of other producers that mechanical loading inevitably leads to a very large increase in the amount of impurities in the product. This is occasioned by the fact that, at least up to the present, all types of loading machines have relied on the coal being broken from the seam by under-cutting and shooting. In this operation, a certain amount of roof and pavement material inevitably becomes mixed with the coal and, since selective loading is impossible with a loading machine, all this foreign material is loaded out with the product."

"The Young-Davidson mine is in the southeastern part of Powell township, in the district of Matachewan. It is 32 miles southwest of Kirkland Lake, 48 miles southeast of Timmins, and 25 miles by road Northwest of Elk Lake. The Young-Davidson and its neighbour, the Matachewan Consolidated mine, are the two present producing properties in the district. The Matachewan area is the southwestern extension of the Kirkland Lake belt or 'break'. The Young-Davidson mine since coming into production in 1934 has been operated by Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited. ""Desultory prospecting(1) has been carried on in the Matachewan area from time to time since the discovery in 1906 of silver in James township at Elk Lake, and some gold has been found in the southeastern part of Alma township and in the central part of Cairo township. The first real interest in the area, however, was started by Jake Davidson's discovery in 1916 of gold on Davidson creek, on what is now part of the Young-Davidson property, and by Sam Otisse's discovery shortly afterwards on claims a short distance to the east, now part of the Matachewan Consolidated property. In subsequent years both of these properties were investigated by various companies; the Young-Davidson chiefly by the Porcupine Gold fields Development and Finance Company, Limited, and the Matachewan Canadian by the Colorado-Ontario Development Company, Limited, which in 1919 was reorganized under the name of Matachewan Gold Mines, Limited. Work was discontinued as the ore was considered too low in grade to be mined"". However, in 1933 Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, undertook to bring the property into production and this became a reality in 1934.The total production to the end of year 1945 was 319,185.59 oz. gold and 73,541.94 oz. silver from 3,228,845 tons of ore. This represents an average grade of $3.67, including exchange and premiums."

PRACTICALLY all of Quebec's chrysotile asbestos production derives from twelve mining and milling operations located in the "Eastern Townships" area of the province. The annual output of these twelve operations exceeds one million tons of chrysotile asbestos, valued at over one hundred million dollars, and is shipped to manufacturers spread over all six continental areas of the world. A total of approximately twenty million ton of asbestos ore yearly, or about seventy-five thousand tons a day, is mined. Individually, the operations vary in size from about two thousand tons to thirty thousand tons per day. Removal of waste rock and overburden to develop these ore tonnages varies greatly from one mine to another, but would probably average out at about a one to one ratio.

"The three principal known mineral deposits of the Taku River area lie in the Tulsequah synclinorium. The axis of this north-south trending structure is along Tulsequah River valley; about 6 miles east of the eastern contact of the Coast Range batholith.The one proven mine of the area, the Polaris-Taku, is on the west side of the valley. It is a gold property, the gold occurring in fine needles of arsenopyrite disseminated in carbonatized volcanics. The mine was originally called the Whitewater, and the adjacent area the Whitewater gold belt. During the years 1937 to 1942 gold having a value of $3,284,000 was produced from 313,500 tons of ore milled."

This work explores the effect of ore hardness variability on the design of a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage and grid backup, to operate a semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). First, a case of two synthetic ore populations was studied, without any consideration of spatial distribution. The mean and variance of the ore hardness (measured in specific energy consumption) of both populations were subjected to a sensitivity analysis. The operation was evaluated with one and two stockpiles. The latter allows classifying according to ore hardness to adapt the SAG energy consumption to the solar cycle. The results show that using two stockpiles allows achieving a larger autonomy (i.e., fewer energy imports) at lower total costs, especially when the difference of mean hardness between the two populations is large. The difference in variance (between the two populations) has a smaller impact on the design recommendations. Second, a case study was performed considering the spatial distribution of geometallurgical units. Two cases were considered: (a) brownfield, when there is historical information of the actual variability of the ore hardness; and (b) greenfield, when the system design relies mainly on geometallurgical modeling. Brownfield and greenfield planning result in similar sizing recommendations of the solar power plant if precise drill cores are available. In this case, geometallurgical modeling is an effective tool for forecasting the energy demand necessary for designing the power plant. INTRODUCTION Solar energy can help make mining more sustainable (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017). With falling battery costs, an autonomous solar supply is soon to become an economical alternative in many parts of the world, even in the presence of a larger power grid (Child et al., 2017). Although this, places with high solar radiation such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, nowadays show a large potential of incorporating solar energy as a supply of energy. Many of the Chilean copper mines are in this zone making it interesting to study their compatibility and potential of integrating this renewable source to their operation. The power demand in a copper mineral processing plant is determined by the main power loads in grinding and flotation, with grinding typically the largest power consumer, especially the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills (Wei and Craig, 2009). In Chile, it corresponds on average the 50% of the electrical energy consumption (COCHILCO, 2013). Solar energy production is determined by the irradiance perceived into the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (which varies through the geographic location) and several other climatic parameters such as the current season, humidity, temperature, altitude, and others (Molina et al., 2017). Also, solar energy is only generated during the sun hours, getting to a maximum generation at a certain peak hour during midday, and finally dropping to zero during the night. This shows a cyclic parabolic profile as shown in Figure 1. Due to the SAG mill operated continuously, the power supply always must be available. During the night, to continue supplying the energy, it is necessary to complement the solar power generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will act as a power backup and a buffer. For the optimal sizing of this PV- BESS system, information of the demand profile is needed (Pamparana et al., 2017). In the case of the SAG mill operation, the resulting demand relates to the ore-hardness for a specific throughput and grind size (Morrell, 2004). Therefore, for a given throughput and target grind size, a harder ore would require more power, and variable hardness results in more variable demand and a subsequent need for larger energy storage (Bueno et al., 2015). "The Michipicoten-Goudreau area, bordering on the northeast corner of lake Suferior, has had a tectonic history related to that of the geosyncline occupied by this lake. This basin has been a major structural feature in the Canadian Shield since at least late-Precambrian time. It has been extensively faulted and was the centre of great igneous activity in the Keweenawan feriod . Many of the faults, folds, dykes, and sills in the surrounding regions tend to head directly or indirectly into this basin. Some of the faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area appear to run under the eastern part of lake Superior just as the large Keweenaw fault in Michigan extends into the lake on the south side. Some of these faults may even be extensions of or counterparts of the faults on the south side of the lake. Another set of faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area runs nearly transverse to some of these major faults, and it is evident that in some places movement has recurred at a later time on faults formed in an early period.STRATIGRAPHYThe rocks of this area, with the exception of Pleistocene and Recent formations, are all Precambrian:"

In 2006, the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.6 mln tonnes of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is about to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 mln tonne HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50% high basicity sinter and 50% acid pellets, both produced in-house. To enable an increased iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needs to be raised to 5.0 mln tonne per annum. The capacity is increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

Positron-Emission-Particle-Tracking (PEPT) has enabled the non-invasive observation of charge and slurry transport in model mills under operational conditions. We use high quality PEPT data to infer that the charge motion can be effectively described by a non-Newtonian granular fluid. An improved theory for slurry transport, including inertial effects, is presented.
