Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation using NaOH (DPN) (~3 wt % Au) and urea (DPU) (~8 wt % Au), and calcined at various temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. They were characterized by UV-Visible, XANES, EXAFS and TEM. Their activity were tested in the reaction of CO oxidation at 5°C. After preparation, the gold species are in the oxidic state III. They begin to transform into metallic gold under air at ~100 °C for DPN and ~150 °C for DPU. At 200 °C, all the gold is metallic for the two preparation methods. The particle size increases from 1.5 to 3.5 nm with the calcination temperature. The catalytic activity for CO oxidation increases with the percentage of metallic gold, and it is maximum at 200°C for both types of samples. The activities (per mole of Au) are the same for the two types of catalysts. At higher temperatures, the catalytic activity drops. The decrease of activity is mainly due to a change of particle shape with the calcination temperature rather than to the increase of the particle size. At a calcination temperature of 200°C, the particles present small facets with rounded parts, and their outer surface contains a large proportion of low coordinated sites (steps and corners) while at high temperature of calcination, they are truncated octahedra with smooth facets.

The commercial carbonate industry of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, began about eighty years ago with the opening of the Sydney steel plant. Significant carbonate deposits are confined to the Precambrian George River Grav" and the Mississippian Windsor Group. George River Group carbonates are thought to have formed as part of a stable platformal sequence. They are crystalline and lie within a dominantly quartzitic sequence. Of the four major sites for George River carbonates on the island, the most commercially promising are the dolomite at Kelly Cove and the limestone and dolomite at Glencoe. Kelly Cove dolomite has good potential for metallurgical, agricultural and fettling purposes; reserves approach 13.6 million tonnes. Windsor Group carbonates were deposited as marine sediments in basins formed by pre-Carboniferous fault blocks. Windsor dolomite reserves at Stoney Creek are only fractionally retrievable and hence are of little economic value. The Windsor Group's Irish Cove limestone has been quarried on a large scale since 1964; no undeveloped commercial deposits, however, remain in the group.

The Canadian mining sector has to be innovative and invest in the development of sustainable mining technologies to maintain its international leadership. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) collaborated with the Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) to define the Green Mining Initiative (GMI) and in order to focus its R&D activities on industry and other stakeholders? needs. The GMI was launched in 2009 to spur innovation in the mining sector and further enhance its environmental performance. The initiative, led by CANMET- Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (MMSL), takes a holistic approach looking at the entire mining life cycle, from design to closure and beyond, through four innovation and research pillars: ? Footprint Reduction, ? Innovation in Waste Management, ? Mine Closure and Rehabilitation, and ? Ecosystem Risk Management. The Canada Mining Innovation Council has also been creating a new initiative on Sustainable Mining, which will bring further focus to environmental aspects of mining, and engaging wide range of research providers to develop research programs complementary to GMI goals.

Anyox, where the Hidden Creek mine of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company is located, is situated on an excellent deep-water harbour in Granby bay, at the head of Observatory inlet, about 600 miles from Vancouver and 90 miles north of Prince Rupert. Anyox is the Indian name for the little stream which empties into Granby bay, and means 'hidden creek'. The Ore-Bodies The ore is a replacement deposit and occurs at and near the contact between argillites and a later intrusive greenstone. This contact locally has a general north-and-south trend, an irregular westerly dip, and in the vicinity of the ore-bodies there has been intense folding, accompanied by faulting. The mineralizing solutions supposedly were derived from the Coast Range granite batholith, distant one to two miles to the east and north. The whole area is cut by many dykes of varying widths, which seem to have had but little part in the ore deposition.

This paper presents the shielding effectiveness (SE) of woven continuous carbon/epoxy composite materials. The theoretical and physical concepts behind the experimental results are demonstrated in details. The influence of frequency, the overlapping angle between overlapped layers and the number of overlapped layers upon the EMI shielding of composite sheets are discussed. In this work, in particular, the epoxy layers are considered as dielectric apertures of the conducting carbon fiber slab for the interpretation of the experimental results. The experimental results, using ASTM standard D4935-89, indicate that the SE can reach values greater than 90 dB above 500 MHz.

"With declining feed grade and increased production targets, it became necessary to upgrade Key Lake's eight stage counter current decantation (CCD) circuit. Following laboratory trials, mill operations recognized that dilution of the feed slurry and buffering of the feed density variations would improve thickener throughput. Plant testing resulted in the installation of Outokumpu's Supaflo ""Floe-Miser"" system. The circuit's flowsheet, instrumentation and control strategy were also upgraded along with the thickener feedwell modifications. The paper will also discuss these modifications and the implementation of the current control strategy.IntroductionCameco Corporation's Key Lake operation is the largest single uranium producer in the world. Current production is fourteen million pounds of uranium oxide (U 308) per year. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining with Cameco as the operator.The mine is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca basin. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.Process DescriptionThe Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants: crushing and grinding; leaching and counter current decantation (CCD); solvent extraction; yellowcake precipitation and ammonium sulphate crystallization; and bulk neutralization (Figure 1 -Simplified Mill Flowsheet). Three-dimensional models are in increasing demand for design, maintenance, operations and construction project management. Point-clouds are the main output of automatic data collection using laser-scanners and photogrammetric technologies. Pipe-works may comprise 50% of the value of important construction projects such as industrial and research facilities. We have developed a practical and cost-effective approach, based on the Hough-transform and judicious use of domain constraints, to find, recognize and reconstruct/model 3D pipes within point-clouds fully automatically. The developed approach allows pipe growing within a 3D point-cloud. It samples the point-cloud to sequential orthogonal slices, detects pipe?s cross-sections within sampled slices and grows the pipe along the cross sections centerlines. It is validated using laser-scanner data from construction of the Engineering-VI building on the University of Waterloo (UW) campus. The system works on a typical laptop. Recognition and localization results are within a few millimeters. The presented approach opens the gate to broad applications of pipe-network modeling.

DR. G. W. RAMSEY (l): A study of our non-treatment silicosis autopsy material for the years 1940-43 inclusive, in addition to the common findings of fibrosis, nodules, and emphysema, shows marked thickening of the alveolar walls. This change is due to one or more of the following factors: congestion, edema, accumulation of both small and large monocuclear cells within the interstitial tissues and large monocuclear cells attached to the lining membrane of the alveolar sacs. This alteration in the alveolar walls, we believe, is one of the most important factors in producing impaired pulmonary function. Comparison of our first autopsy material of a case receiving twenty aluminium treatments beginning June, 1943, shows a striking change in the alveolar walls. In all areas free of silocotic nodules and fibrous tissue, the alveolar walls approach normal thickness and are free of cellular deposits. No change was noted in the old processes and none was expected. We believe that these changes in the alveolar walls were brought about by the aluminium therapy and that they constitute a major factor in the improved pulmonary ventilation noted in treatment cases.

Based on the deep burial depth of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields, Anhui Province, China, this paper puts forward the concept of partitioning of coal deposits according to occurrence conditions. This process is controlled by tectonic forces. The classification scheme of coal deposits exploration types is presented according to occurrence and mining conditions of coal deposits as viewed from the perspective of deep coal exploration properties. The principles underlying geological exploration services for the resources development are incorporated. There are six exploration types of coal deposits in the Huainan and Huaibei coalfields. Exploration models tailored to different types of exploration have been established and exploration strategies corresponding to different exploration models have been proposed. Steady-state temperature must be measured for the deep heat-harm type of coal deposit. The sealing coring of mine gas samples should be performed for the high mine gas type of coal deposit. For coal deposits with complex structures, such as those located beneath nappes, coal-controlling structural styles must be performed. Existing data on shallow districts are very important to the research of folds and fault-block types of coal deposits beneath and peripheral to old and existing coal mine areas. For the types of fault-block coal deposits hidden by thick Cenozoic cover, particular attention must be paid to comprehensive use of research on regional coal occurrence law and geophysical methods. The present work promotes the exploration level of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields to best meet the need for sustainable development of the coal industry.

In the planning phase of every construction project, layout of temporary facilities is a crucial task; site layout can affect safety, travel cost and time, construction productivity, and space utilization. However, site layout planning can be a complicated problem, due to the interdependency of influencing factors. Although interaction among activities is one of the major drivers of site layout planning, it has not been properly addressed in past research. In this study, simulation is presented as a promising tool to address this gap. The capability of simulation technology to model complex processes in construction projects makes use of simulation tools in site layout optimization problems effective, while existing methods are unable to perfectly model these problems, in some cases. Additionally, the advantages and challenges of implementing simulation are assessed and a generic framework for simulation application in site layout planning is proposed.

The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the Havrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has Yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 3% Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of Havrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is situated adjacent to Highway 101, twenty-four kilometres east of the center of the city of Timmins, Ontario. Sulphide ore, received by train from the minesite twenty-nine kilometres away, is processed at a rate of twelve thousand metric tonnes per day. Saleable concentrates of copper, zinc, lead and tin are produced.The concentrator contains secondary crushing, grinding, flotation, gravity separation and concentrate handling facilities. The total concentrator manpower complement is one hundred and sixty-four which includes supervision and operating personnel. Twenty-one shift personnel are required to operate the processes involved and they occupy fifteen different operating positions in addition to that of the supervisor. Supply chain simulation modeling is taking on a more prominent role in mining project planning and decision making. Transportation costs for the supply chain can form a significant component of the overall cost to provide product to the end customer. In recent years, computing power has increased, simulation software has advanced, and simulation specialists have become even better equipped to provide sophisticated analysis and recommendations. This has led to a virtuous cycle of owners expecting and supporting data-driven analytics, which drives further advancement. This paper discusses developments in supply chain planning and two case studies from recent simulation modeling analyses.

"The Part of the Eastern Townships dealt with in this paper is shown in the accompanying figure. Each rectangle represents one of the topographic maps published by the Department of National Defence on a scale of one mile to one inch. Each sheet covers an area approximately 24 miles long and 17 miles wide, or slightly more than 400 square miles. The north-western part of the area figured, comprising the Upton, Aston, Becancour, and the two unnamed sheets, (Three Rivers and Yamaska), together with most of the Lyster, Drummondville, and St. Hyacinthe sheets, is largely covered by clays and sands deposited in interglacial and post-glacial time in the Champlain estuary, so that outcrops are widely scattered and in-formation is correspondingly sketchy. In the remainder of the area figured, comprising more than 4,000 square miles, outcrops are reasonably numerous and have been mapped on a scale of one mile to one inch, and the structure is moderately well understood.The Eastern Townships was an area of intense orogenic disturbance, apparently beginning late in the Cambrian or early in the Ordovician, and continuing till well on in the Devonian period. During this long period, which may have lasted for a hundred million years or more, the area was subjected from time to time to intense thrusts from the east and southeast. Each of these caused folding of the rocks, accompanied by faulting, raised parts of the area above sea-level, and presumably created ranges of mountains. Long periods of erosion cut away the mountains and reduced the area nearly to sea-level after which subsidence carried it below sea-level, and permitted further sediments to accumulate before the next thrust initiated the next cycle.The first of these movements, as stated, appears to have been in late Cambrian or early Ordovician time. The group of rocks known as Caldwell was folded and, south and east of the town of Asbestos, was thrown into great drag-folds before deposition of the next overlying series, termed the Beauceville, began. Unfortunately, the date of this orogeny is very imperfectly known, because both series of rocks have been so crushed and sheared that almost all fossil remains have been destroyed. Graptolites, found in one place in slates generally considered Beauceville, give that series a tentative Middle Ordovician age. In the Caldwell rocks, which underlie the Beauceville with great unconformity, no fossils whatever have yet been found. Thus, if the Beauceville rocks are correctly dated as mid-Ordovician, the best that can be said of the movement folding the Caldwell is that it took place at some time before Middle Ordovician."

Fifty per cent. increased lump coal production and at the same time a reduction of from 20 to 40 per cent. in explosive consumption. These results were achieved by the use of the rock-dust cartridge method of stemming shots in the Ruhr coal mines, as announced by Dr. Alfred Stettbacher in the September 1923 number of the Explosive Engineer. Immediately, the explosive and the coal-mining industries on this continent became intensely interested. Considerable experimental work has been carried on in a number of American and Canadian mines during the past year, by which our engineers have become assured that the use of rock-dust cart-ridges for stemming shots increases the efficiency of explosives and promotes safety in coal mines.

Since mid-1989, Cambior has increased its producing gold mines from four to six, having acquired the Chima Mine and brought the Silidor Mine onstream. In June 1990, the company announced that the Mouska project would also be put into production. Gold production reached almost 190 000 ounces in 1989 and is expected to exceed 220 000 ounces this year. Cambior has also a non-gold operation with an interest of 50% in the Niobec Mine and has recently signed an option agreement in the development of the Lac Knife graphite deposit in northeastern Quebec. During the past year, the company has extended its exploration activities to the United States and Indonesia, and now has interests in nearly 80 properties. Last May, Cambior signed an option agreement with Golden Star for a gold deposit in Guyana, the OMAI Project, containing at least 2 000 000 ounces of gold in situ.

Thioglycollic acid or citric acid depressed the flotation of pyrite but could not depress chalcopyrite when used alone; ! Combination of thioglycollic acid and citric acid had a much stronger depressive effect, and the mixture depressed chalcopyrite as well as pyrite between pH 8 and 11 without affecting the flotation of calcite and dolomite; ! Calcite could be separated from chalcopyrite and pyrite; dolomite could be separated from pyrite but not from chalcopyrite under the tested conditions.
