IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a 'Doodlebug' which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the 'Doodlebug' dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.

The Brisco Barite Mine lies 70 km south-southeast of Golden, British Columbia. Barile mineralization occurs in a northstriking brecciation zone within Ordovician-Silurian Beaver/ oot dolomites and quartzites. Brecciation was caused by faulting related to the Mount Forster-Steamboat Fault. The main barite vein occupies a fault zone and is up to 12 m wide and over 250 m long. It is light grey to white, fine grained and compact; BaSO4 content is 9/. 70 per cent. Production started in 1945 and has continued to the present. Barile originally was removed from an open pit; later, an adit, begun in 1957, reached more than 240 m along the vein, 15 m below the pit floor. Today ore is hoisted from a decline resting some 37 m below the pit floor.

"The Craigmont copper-iron skarn deposit is adjacent to the southern margin of the late Triassic Guichon Creek batholith in south-central British Columbia. Host to the ore are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the western calc-alkaline belt of the Upper TriassicNicola Group. In the mine area, the Nicola Group rocks are a stratigraphically complex sequence, at least 1800 feet thick, which have been subdivided into Basalt, Rhyolite, Carbonate and Clastic Sediment units. All the units strike and dip parallel to the margin of the Guichon Creek batholith and are within the batholith contact aureole. However, only the Clastic Sediment unit is in contact with the batholith.Most of the skarn and ore is within the Carbonate unit and more specifically within an Interbedded facies that consists of lime sandstone, lime siltstone, quartzo-feldspathic siltstone and argillite. The Interbedded facies and the adjacent barren Massive Limestonefacies are interpreted aspart ofa carbonate reef complex. The distribution of skarn and ore within the Interbedded facies suggests that the facies boundary was a physical and chemical barrier that resulted in concentration of metals adjacent to the Massive Limestone facies.Two stages of skarn formation have been recognized at Craigmont. In Stage I, ore-bearing magnetite-rich and actinolite-epidote-magnetite skarns developed both in basaltic rocks and in Fe-bearing siltstone and argillite of the Interbedded facies, while barren grossular garnet-epidote-calcite-pyrite skarns developed in Fe-poor rhyolitic bands within the Interbedded and Massive Limestone facies . In Stage ll, massive, barren grandite garnet skarn replaced mineralized Stage I skarns in the vicinity of diorite plugs. and specularite ore formed in brecciated Stage I skarn and clastic rocks away from the plugs. Theformation of Stage I skarns required no addition of material, only redistribution and concentration of elements already present within the Interbedded facies. However, the concentration of Cu in Stage lore requires a mechanism for more efficient leaching of Cu from the host rocks, an anomalous concentration of Cu at the site of the Stage I orebody or an additional input of Cu from an external source. The formation of Stage II skarn and ore requires only remobilization and recrystallization of Stage I skarn and ore.Copper and iron are the only elements in economic concentrations in the ore and chalcopyrite is the only significant copper-bearing mineral. Chalcopyrite is disseminated and interstitial to magnetite in Stage I mineralized skarns and is interstitial to specularite in the matrix of Stage II breccia ores. Chalcopyrite also occurs with pyrite as stringer ore in bleached • sediments and rhyolite tuffs in the stratigraphic footwall of the main orebodies.The Craigmont deposit has more features in common with Cu-Fe deposits hosted in metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks than it has with typical skarn deposits associated with porphyry copper deposits. The orebody is more likely a product of concentration of metal contained within the Nicola Group rocks than of the mineralizing event that produced the . Highland Valley Cu-Mo porphyry deposits in the central part of the Guichon Creek batholith ."

A glance at the map discloses the fact that the Pacific Great Eastern railway either traverses or crosses some of the most important rivers of the province: the Squamish with its branches the Stawamus, Mamquam and Cheakamus; and the Green, Lillooet, Birkenhead, Fraser and Quesnel rivers. Each of these and some of their tributary streams, having their ?sources and upper reaches in the higher altitudes in regions of abundant snowfall, is capable in greater or less degree of furnishing water under suitable heads for the economic production of power. Beginning at its present terminus at Squamish the railway has the only hydro-electric development within its territory among the whole list of streams mentioned. A 225 horsepower installation at the edge of the East branch of the Squamish river, using water from Stawamus river, a branch of the former, under a head of 418 feet, is a modest beginning. Two or three additional sites, where water may be used under somewhat similar heads, may be found on this little stream. Next above Squamish, along the route of the railway, is the Mamquam, a long tributary of the Squamish from the eastern slopes. It has a drainage area of something like 130 square miles with widely varying discharges of from less than 50 to about 14,000 cubic feet per second. The preliminary investigations so far have disclosed no suitable storage sites, so the Mamquam may be regarded as a small continuous power stream - probably less than 1000 horsepower.

"It is suggested that artificial supports might be used to increase, with safety, the angle of hardrock open-pit slopes. Guidelines for designing such a support system, based on a simplified analysis, are given. The installation, construction and instrumentation of a trial support system is described and a breakdown of the construction costs is given. On the basis of this cost analysis, the economic benefits derived from reduced waste-rock excavation are compared with the support costs for a typical mine. In an example, it is shown that the slope angle in an open-pit mine 500 ft deep, with benches 50 ft high by 30 ft wide, could be safely increased from 37Yz degrees without support to an optimum of 53 degrees with support. In this case, the support costs would be approximately $900 per linear foot of pit wall and the savings due to decreased excavation of waste rock (at $0.34/ton) would be approximately $1,900 per linear foot, yielding an increased margin of profit of approximately $1,000 per linear foot of pit wall. This figure could be increased to $6,000 per linear foot if the steeper slope were used to extract more ore.More than 50 per cent of the support costs are accounted for by diamond-drilling the holes for the deep cable anchors. The use of percussion drills for this purpose would seem to offer a means of significantly reducing the support . costs and thus further increasing the profit margin available."

The adsorption capacity of peat collected from a proposed mine development in northern Sweden has been determined using laboratory column experiments in which peat was irrigated with a simulated (acidic) waste rock dump leachate. The simulated leachate was made using a hydrogen peroxide leach of composite waste rock from the proposed mine development. The waste rock samples were composited in proportion to their predicted extractable tonnage for the mine development in order to generate a more representative leachate solution for the waste rock facility. As expected the test revealed that the peat material shows a very high affinity for attenuation with greater than 70% of Co, 90% of Ni and 95% of Cu removed from influent solutions through the majority of the tests demonstrating the potential benefits in mine water treatment. In contrast, it was found that Fe is initially released from the peat at concentrations up to 100 mg/L and can mean potential problems for the water released depending on the receiving environment. The exact mechanisms for Fe release is uncertain, though it is suspected that ion exchange / competitive desorption is responsible. Inspection of the laboratory results and drainage data from the natural peat wetland receiving drainage during overburden prestriping and mine development at the mine site are comparable, confirm the validity of the experiments, and further emphasize the potential for future use of pre-stripped peat material in managing water quality.

Deep-seated landslides are characterized by slow time-dependent movements induced by constant gravitational creep, and periods of acceleration associated with stress changes within the rock and the preexisting fracture network. Natural stress changes are typically caused by seasonal variations in surface temperatures and groundwater pressures, but also by rare and more violent events such as earthquakes. These processes are responsible for cyclic loading and unloading that leads to rock mass damage, fatigue and progressive failure with time, and may explain sudden, unexpected rock slope acceleration phases. In this work, we present a set of distinct-element models to investigate and compare the role of hydromechanical fatigue and seismic fatigue in the history of a deep-seated landslide. Hydromechanical fatigue arises from the fluctuation of pore pressure in fractures accompanying periods of significant groundwater recharge. In alpine areas, there are usually one or two cycles per year associated with snow melt and intense rainfall periods. In the presence of a deep confined aquifer within the rock slope, the amplitude of pressure fluctuations may reach values of 0.25-0.5 MPa. Hydromechanical models considering such pressure changes are able to reproduce observed slope accelerations-decelerations phases. Substantial accelerations may occur even in the absence of a cycle of exceptional amplitude, depending on the current state of fatigue. At a given time, one or more fractures may be critically-stressed, and a small change in applied stress is enough to cause local failure and induce a crisis of enhanced slope acceleration. This is augmented if the rock slope contains planes of weakness associated with its tectonic history, glacial debuttressing, etc. The corresponding behaviour is analogous to laboratory experiments on rock and metal fatigue. Similar fatigue effects have also been proposed for repeated earthquake events in seismically active regions. Unlike hydromechanical stress changes that occur in a more localized portion of the rock slope, those induced by passing seismic waves involve the entire rock mass. Moreover, the frequency and amplitude of stress perturbations due to earthquakes are different than those induced by pore pressure variations, although both likely contribute in combination to the degradation and progressive failure of large deep-seated landslides when both are present. The results presented illustrate that: (1) assessment of slope stability near critical infrastructure (e.g., hydroelectric reservoirs) should not only consider static stability, but also failure mechanisms related to fatigue that evolve over time and may result in an apparently stable slope progressing towards a critical state due to relatively small but repetitive stress changes; and that (2) characterization of fatigue processes affecting a deep-seated landslide requires multiparametric continuous monitoring at different observation points.

"This document highlights some of the topical problems associated with the design and support of deep tabular excavations in hard rock. The displacement discontinuity boundary element method has been used for at least five decades to analyse stress and displacement distributions around narrow width excavations with complex plan outlines. The assumption is made in most cases that the rock mass surrounding the excavation is perfectly elastic. Although this approach works well to minimise stress concentrations in practice, it has limitations as important parameters, such as the effect of mining rate, cannot be investigated. Recently, a limit equilibrium model has been studied as a means to enhance standard layout design exercises by including an interactive on-reef damage model. This approach can include explicit energy release dissipation computations. A second problem faced by engineers in the mining industry is the evaluation of pillar and remnant stress. The paper highlights two aspects namely the effect of element size in displacement discontinuity modeling on pillar stress and the difficulty to estimate the effect of total closure on the regeneration of stress in old mining areas. Regarding the support of the tabular excavations, current efforts are focussed on providing improved aerial coverage using hangingwall bolting and temporary nets. An unresolved issue is the installation of permanent mesh in low stoping width areas. INTRODUCTIONSince 1886, more than 50 000 tons of gold has been mined in the Witwatersrand Basin of South Africa (Hartnady, 2009). The nearby platinum mines also saw significant growth in recent years and more than 80% of the world’s platinum group metal reserves are contained in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa (Nell, 2004). Apart from the economic aspects, the mines served as an outstanding rock engineering “laboratory” for many decades owing to the deep, tabular nature of the excavations. The period from 1960 to 1980 was especially lucrative in terms of research and world-renowned researchers investigated the support and rockburst problems (e.g. see Cook et al., 1966; Salamon, 1968; Bienawski, 1973; Wagner, 1984). Many of the rock-related problems nevertheless persist up to the present day and this paper explores some of these problems and recent progress. The production of gold declined substantially in recent years (Hartnady, 2009) and well-directed rock engineering research can play a meaningful role to slow this trend. The objective of the document is to highlight critical areas requiring additional research and not to discuss the topics in detail. The reader is referred to the many references for additional information. The paper only focuses on three areas namely numerical modelling, pillar stress estimation and aerial support. Although these are diverse topics, it is included in one paper to illustrate the many unsolved and practical problems associated with deep tabular excavations."

"The Smoky Valley Common Operation is managed and 50 percent owned by Echo Bay Mine' s Round Mountain Gold Corporation. The other partners with 25 percent each are Homestake Mining Company and Case Pomeroy. The operation in central Nevada includes an open pit, 3-stage open-circuit crushing train and heap leaching on asphalt pads. Presently, about 18,000 tons per day of 0.039 troy ounce gold per ton are transferred to the leach pads, and a similar tonnage of leach residue is transferred to a waste dump. One million tons of ore are being leached at any one time.Gold and silver cyanide are adsorbed from pregnant leach solution on activated coconut shell carbon granules. Pressure stripping desorbs values from loaded carbon to electrowinning solution.Three electrowinning cells are operated in parallel. Each contains six cathodes. Each cathode includes about 40 troy ounces (2.7 pounds) of Number 2 medium coarse steel wool. The wetted area of each cathode is about 24 by 30 inches. Solution flow is 2 to 3 gallons per minute per electrowinning cell. Average current flow is 25 amperes per cathode. The voltage is controlled in the range of 3 to 4 volts to maintain desired amperage.Twice a week two cathodes are pulled from each cell and drained. Each cathode is split into four portions. These are put in a steel pan coated with WD-40 and dried overnight.Each dried cathode portion is put into a paper sack. Each group of four sacks corresponding to a cathode is weighed together. The typical weight ratio of loaded cathode wool to new cathodes is 9 or 10 to 1. To each sack is added 35 troy ounces of silica, 45 troy ounces of anhydrous borax, 35 troy ounces of nitre, and 5 troy ounces of fluorspar. The sacks are taped shut."

"The Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) brought together all of the key stakeholders in Canada's mining industry to develop a framework whereby the industry can meet the challenges that it faces into the 21st century. The WMI Accord7 which was signed at the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 137 1994, touches all of the important issues that confront the industry, including taxation. IntroductionSeptember 13, 1994, was a historical day for Canada's mining industry. On that day, on the occasion of the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) Accord was signed by the leaders of the five principal stakeholders in the industry: industry; government; labour; environmentalists; and aboriginals. The Accord is the culmination of two years of hard work and intense collaboration by these stakeholders. But, the Accord is not the end result. The Accord can better be described as a springboard to a prosperous future for mining in Canada.The WMI had its beginnings at the Mines Ministers Conference in Whitehorse, Yukon, in September 1992 (hence, the name of the initiative). At that time, the mining industry was well aware of the serious challenges facing the industry, including significantly increased competition for mineral investment from other mining countries, coupled with an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding land access, environmental regulations, and taxation. The diversion of investment abroad was hurting, and would continue to hurt, all Canadians. Something had to be done. At the 1992"

"Chalk rocks have been used for centuries as a strong building material and for the production of lime. The shallow underground room-and-pillar quarries where the chalk was extracted are now abandoned and endure the effects of time and weathering, increasing their risk of collapse. The risk of instability, involving natural or anthropic underground structures, is an issue for more than 10 000 towns in France.In order to investigate the causes of underground quarry collapse and to aid prevention strategies, we carried out a study of the physico-mechanical behaviour and ageing of chalk in abandoned pillars in two underground quarries, in situ-instrumented by INERIS, in the Parisian Basin, France. Core samples were drilled horizontally from pillars in the Saint-Martin-Le-Noeud dolomitic chalk quarry (Oise, France) and the Estreux glauconitic chalk quarry (Nord, France).Uniaxial tests were performed on dry and saturated cylindrical plug samples extracted perpendicular to the cores at regular distances along their lengths. Physical and mechanical properties were obtained. The dolomitic chalk (Saint-Martin-Le-Noeud) exhibits variation in mechanical and physical properties with horizontal pillar depth. Both density and compressive strength seem to increase outwards from the pillar-core to the pillar-wall. This is the opposite of that would be expected from a purely mechanical point of view. SEM analysis revealed progressive degradation and homogeneity of the grains from the edge to the inside of the pillar. At the pillar wall, the crystal faces are well-defined, almost euhedral, and the grains are of variable size. In contrast, at the inside of the pillar, crystals are finer-grained and are anhedral with highly degraded edges. In the physico-mechanical tests and SEM analyses performed on the Estreux samples, no significant variation was observed between the pillar-walls and pillar-core. However, dissolution marks were observed along the entire length of the half-pillar core."

In this study, to confirm the effect of depletion attraction on the flotation, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of the depletion attraction force on flotation. While varying the concentration of the depletion agent (polyethylene glycol), three different systems are studied: pure malachite, pure silica, and a 1:1 mass ratio of malachite and silica binary system. We find that recovery increases significantly as the concentration of the depletion agents increases for all three systems, as the depletion agent facilitates the adsorption of the particle on the bubble surface. However, the recovery suddenly decreases in a certain concentration range, which corresponds to the onset of the decreased surface tension when high concentrations of the depletion agent are used. This non-monotonic overall recovery trend implies the surface adsorption of the depletant on a surface. The decreased surface tension of the air/water interface suggests that the recovery rate is lowered due to the adsorption of the depletion agent to the bubble surface, acting as a polymer brush. Based on our observations, we conclude that the depletion force can greatly improve particle adsorption, as predicted in the accompanying theory paper, while simultaneously the adsorption of the depletion agent on the bubble surface plays an important role because it hinders particle adsorption. We also perform experiments in the presence of a small amount of a collector, sodium oleate. An extremely small amount of the collector leads to the increase in the overall recovery, which eventually reaches nearly 100 percent. Nevertheless, the grade worsens as the depletant provides the force to silica particles as well as target malachite particles.

"The susceptibility to intergranular corrosion modes is a major technical issue preventing widespread utilization of higher strength welded AA7xxx extruded beam profiles, in the peak-aged T6 condition, in automotive bumper assemblies. A study was undertaken to evaluate the relative exfoliation corrosion resistance (ASTM G85-A2) as a function of joint design parameters, namely the base alloy composition, heat-treated condition and beam orientation after exposure to a cyclic acidified salt spray test. This paper documents the major findings extracted from this study.INTRODUCTIONBumper systems play a predominant role in the passive safety of an automobile, since they are one of the main structures for absorbing the collision energy in the event of an automobile crash. Heattreatable AA6xxx-series (Al-Mg-Si) and AA7xxx-series (Al-Zn-Mg) Al alloys, with relatively high strength, toughness, energy absorption, weldability and formability, make it possible to design costcompetitive bumper systems to crush in a controlled fashion. In this context, Cu-lean AA7xxx extrusions, such as AA7003 and AA7108, which exhibit higher strength than AA6xxx extrusion, such as AA6082, represent an attractive light weight material from which to fabricate bumper assemblies (Clausen et al., 2000; Pedersen et al., 2008; Chen et al., 2009).Arc welding is a key joining process for AA7xxx alloys within the transportation industry. A major technological issue preventing widespread utilization of arc-welded AA7xxx joints is the susceptibility to severe localized corrosion (Kent, 1970, Reboul et al., 1985; Holroyd et al., 1987). It generally occurs as exfoliation corrosion within a heat affected zone (HAZ) a few millimeters from the weld bead, or a type of stress corrosion cracking (weld-toe cracking), which initiates at the weld toe and propagates into the interfacial region between the weld bead and the HAZ (so called “white zone”). In addition to the micro-galvanic cell activity induced by the intermetallic compound constituent and strengthening particles present, there is strong evidence that macro-galvanic cell activity between the weld bead and base AA7xxx alloy may be playing a controlling role. Electrochemical profiles taken across fusion welded joints, in cross-section, during exposure to saline solutions suggest that a significant potential difference exists across the AA7xxx arc-welded joint (Shumaker et al., 1967; Grauer and Wiedmer, 1980; Tuck, 1985, Onoro and Ranninger, 1993). These studies consistently show that the HAZ and base alloy are more electronegative with respect to the weld bead (arc-welded with AA5xxx filler wire). Despite this initial important work, the majority of the recent corrosion research effort on welded AA7xxx alloys has focused on the performance of friction stir welds (Lumsden et al., 1999; Wadeson et al., 2006; Hatamleh et al., 2009)."

In 2003, Phelps Dodge Mining Company decided to pursue the design and construction of a Central Analytical Laboratory to provide chemical analyses for their Arizona and New Mexico operations. This centralized approach was selected in place of refurbishing six (6) older laboratories that operated at the various Phelps Dodge sites, and which would not have permitted full automation and use of robotics. The new lab was designed by the Process Technology Center (PTC) Material Characterization Group in cooperation with IMP Group. The Central Analytical Service Center (CASC) encompasses fully automated sample preparation of blast holes and geological samples weighing up to 15 kg/sample. The CASC also includes the first "wet chemistry module" worldwide to be operated by robotics systems to perform Total Cu, Acid Soluble Cu, and Quick Leach Tests (QLT), and a fully automated lab for electrowon copper cathode. The new lab also offers flexibility for handling specialty samples and analyses by either semi-automated or manual mode. Data handling and transfer is accomplished using the commercially available StarLIMS system. Commissioning was accomplished within five (5) months of startup during which the CASC also handled 86% of a full production load. The 24/7 lab operation has already exceeded its design capacity, has achieved considerable savings in operating cost, reduced sample preparation errors, and significantly increased analytical quality.

Many gold treatment plants have sulphides and coarse particle gangue components that contain gold in their tailings (cyanide leach residues and flotation tailings). Coarse and very fine liberated gold may also be present in some tailings streams. Two issues usually govern the economics of recovering additional gold from gold occluded in sulphide and gangue particles. The liberation characteristics of the gold in the sulphide and coarse gangue (gold liberation versus grind size) is the first and most important of the two. If fine grinding can liberate a reasonable amount of the gold, then the next important issue is how effectively these two constituents can be concentrated. Flotation will achieve high sulphide recovery but is usually costly. Selectivity is also an issue because of entrainment. Continuous centrifugal gravity concentration offers a viable solution to the recovery of both sulphides and coarse gangue however selectivity is also likely to be a problem. The possibility of improving concentrate grade by using a Falcon B separator was investigated. This paper describes a program of test work carried out on a gold leach tailings using a laboratory Falcon '13' separator. The program involved three different bowl angles: 10, 12 and 14 degrees and two bowl speeds (giving 250 and 350G accelerations). A number of tests were also performed on samples that had free gold present to ascertain the size-by-size recovery of gold in these samples.

The Trojan Tailings Pond at Highland Valley Copper developed in only 15 years from a biologically inactive water body into a productive lake with a well established aquatic ecosystem. This process was assisted by a few simple and inexpensive procedures including fertilization and introduction of essential organisms. The success at the Trojan Pond has encouraged the use of similar techniques in other water bodies on the mine site. This paper details: ??The history, water quality and thermal behavior of Trojan Tailings Pond ?Techniques used in fertilization; introduction of micro-flora (algae etc.), large aquatic plants, zooplankton and invertebrates ??Selection and sources of suitable transplant materials ??Rate and extent of vegetation establishment ??Biomass production ??Rates of organic sediment accumulation over tailings ??Bacterial activity in the sediments ??Improved water quality through the bioaccumulation of aqueous metals in plants and the subsequent bacterial binding or precipitation of that metal during decomposition in the tailings sediment. Robert A. Hamaguchi graduated with a Mining Diploma from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1971, followed with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mineral Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1975. Since graduation, he has worked for numerous open pit mining operations throughout British Columbia. In 1991, he joined Highland Valley Copper working as an Environmental Engineer responsible for government liaison, reclamation, decommissioning and other environmental duties. Heather M. Larratt graduated from the University of Calgary in 1978 with a B.Sc. in Environmental Biology (First Class Honors). She has provided drinking water management and reservoir design for numerous cities and irrigation districts in British Columbia for 20 years. Heather has also worked for 12 years in reclamation of mine water, including passive SRB water treatment systems. Mark R. Freberg joined Highland Valley Copper in 1991 after working at number of mining operations in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mineral Engineering from the University of British Columbia.

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

We are developing a cost-saving and environmentally friendly process with low energy consumption to recover the metal content and recycle the acid from spent pickle baths. The metals are precipitated as metal fluorides, which can be turned into metal oxides and hydrofluoric acid by thermal hydrolysis. In the proposed process the solution is concentrated by nanofiltration and the metals are precipitated in a subsequent crystallization step. Different nanofiltration membranes have been evaluated in experimental batch tests. The membrane MPF-34 from Koch Membrane Systems offered both good flux and acceptable metal retention even after long periods of acid storage. The solubility of B-FeF3.3H20 has been measured at varying acid concentrations and at different temperatures. The solubility decreases with increasing hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid concentrations. This suggests that the crystallization process should be operated at high acid concentrations. The crystal growth rate of B-FeF3.3H2O is found to be quite low but increases significantly with temperature. This suggests that the crystallization process should be operated at higher temperatures (40 - 60°C). Within the project a pilot plant has been constructed where the spent pickle bath solution is concentrated by nanofiltration to the desired metal fluoride supersaturation, and B-FeF3.3H2O is crystallized in a 10 L continuous crystallizer.

Uranium is conventionally extracted using a process that employs strong acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant (MnO2) as leaching agents. This method often creates environmental problems, requires large amounts of energy, and involves a complex operational plant. It is not, however, economically attractive to extract uranium from low-grade ores by chemical leaching. Because the content of U3O8 in the Indian ore is usually below 0.1% by weight, it is necessary to develop an alternative process to enable the efficient and economic recovery of uranium. Uranium ore from the Narwapahar mines, UCIL is a type of vein deposit found in India, which accounts for ~54% in India. The ore (0.047% U3O8), though of Singhbhum area, possess exceptionally different mineralogy due to presence of some refractory minerals and richness of apatite (5%) resulting in a maximum 78% recovery through conventional processing at UCIL, with a very high consumption of sulfuric acid and pyrolusite, besides possible loss of uranium as uranium phosphate. To avoid usage of environmentally non-benign oxidants, remediation of influence of phosphates, and improve the overall process output of uranium; an alternate extraction technology using microbial isolate(s) is worthwhile exploring and the same is presented in the paper. The microbial isolate enriched with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans grown from source mine water was employed for bio-leaching of uranium while varying pH, pulp density (PD), particle size, etc. On varying pH at 35oC using 20%(w/v) PD and <75µm particle size, 83.5% and 78% uranium bio-recovery were observed at 1.7 and 2.0 pH in 40 days against maximum recovery of 46% and 41% metal in control experiments respectively. Whereas, it was observed that grinding of ore to finer size actually helped dissolution of uranium. Finer size particles (<45µm) gave a maximum biorecovery of 93% in 40days at 10%(w/v) PD, 1.7 pH and 35oC. The bio-recovery of uranium fell down from 93% to 82.73% and 60% on increasing the pulp density from 10% to 20% and 30% respectively for particles of <45µm size. The higher uranium dissolution during bioleaching at 1.7pH can be correlated with increase in redox potential from 433 mV to 664mV in 40 days.

"The name Barkc:rville district is applied loosely to the gold-bearing area around the historic town of Barkerville; the first mining camp in western Canada. The region is partly in the Cariboo mining division and partly in the Quesnel mining division. It contains two producing lode gold mines; the Cariboo Gold Quartz and the Island Mountain; and numerous other deposits. The regional structural pattern is outlined in this paper; the structural details of the producing mines are described in the papers that follow.The discovery of rich placer deposits in this district in 1860 was followed by the Cariboo gold rush. Placer mining in the area flourished until 1875 and then declined as the shallow diggings were exhausted, but important operations are still active. The total placer production amounts to about $50,000,000. An extraordinary number of quartz veins outcrop in the district, but many have only a small gold content. The miners soon recognized that the placer gold must have been derived from the erosion of these veins, and some directed their attention to the possibility of quartz mining. The erection of a 4stamp mill in 1876 was the first attempt at ore reduction in British Columbia, exclusive of arrastras. Efforts to mine the Cariboo lodes on a large scale were not successful, however, until 1933, when, due to the pertinacity of F. M. Wells and to the increased price of gold, the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine commenced production, followed by the Island Mountain mine in 1934. This success led to development work at many properties in the district, but the only ones that have reached production to date are the Columbia Tungstens, where scheelite has been mined intermittently since 1937, and the Cariboo Hudson, from which gold was produced in 1938 and 1939."
