There are many critical nodes along the mine value chain, from orebody to mineral product, and inter-disciplinary input is required to analyse the variability and uncertainty at each node in order to identify and mitigate areas of risk. Mining differs from many other industries in that the variability in the product is dictated largely by the inherent nature of the input material (the orebody). The true characteristics, including the variability of the orebody, are never known exactly and are instead based on estimates derived from sample data. A further difference is that bottom-line gains are largely controlled by world commodity prices, which can vary with time, rather than by local supply and demand issues. Methods for identifying, reporting and responding to this inherently variable raw material are discussed. These include analytical and reporting methods, equipment and software, risk analysis and reality checks (eg reconciliation). Sampling results, mineral resource and ore reserve estimates and economic assumptions are a function of the variability of the orebody. Risk quantification should be expressed as a level of confidence, which takes into account the scale or period over which the risk is being assessed (life-of-mine, annual or shorter production periods) and should convey the likelihood, severity and consequence of occurrence of a given event. The future generation of mining specialists needs to understand the entire mine value chain to better manage risks and maximise mine dollar-value.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralization occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydro- thermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz- adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy ana sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt. % NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei aria riroaolan¦s. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralization is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system.

"In some underground mines it has been observed that the primary focus during feasibility studies is to determine the best way to mine the defined orebody. Some studies have been conducted without sufficient consideration of the ventilation and cooling requirements or the risk from exposure to associated airborne pollutants caused by the mining operations.Following the hierarchy of control to manage risk, numerous problems of the ventilation systems in some underground mines could have been avoided if sufficient consideration was given to the ventilation requirements to manage heat, airborne pollutants and leakage during the feasibility study phase. If the constraints and hazards were well defined and understood at the time of the study, efforts could have been made to eliminate or substitute the hazards to decrease the risk. Some of these problems include but are not limited to: primary fan locations heat loads diesel exhaust ventilation design based on the production requirement fire/emergency response strategies.This paper highlights areas in the ventilation discipline that are sometimes overlooked during feasibility studies. It will also highlight the importance of the Ventilation Specialist during these studies. Experience and knowledge of best ventilation practices must be applied in feasibility studies.As a result of adequate consideration to all ventilation aspects in the feasibility study phase, risks will become lower in terms of health, safety, production loss and equipment downtime caused by heat.CITATION:Kok, J, 2014. Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure. William Poole was honoured to hold membership in the following organisations: Assoc M Inst C E, L S of NSW, M Aus Inst M M, Assoc Inst M & M (London).

Faced with rising costs and lower metal prices, several Ontario base metal sulphide mines have changed their method of mining to vertical crater retreat mining. This is a bulk mining method that utilises large diameter holes and mines successive cuts remotely by blasting and cratering the bottom of the drill holes. The orebody is mined from the bottom up. The method in turn has required a change in materials handling to cope with the greatly increased productivity.   This paper presents an overview of vertical crater retreat mining in the Sudbury area using examples from several producing mines. The paper reviews the history of vertical crater retreat mining, various methods of applying vertical crater retreat layouts, the development of in-the-hole drills capable of drilling the large diameter holes required, methods of explosives loading and blasting to achieve the required cratering effect, methods of ground support including backfill placement, and the ore loading equipment presently being utilised including remote control load-haul-dump units and continuous loaders.   The safety aspect of vertical crater retreat mining has been of concern, and was the focus of a provincial inquiry. The benefits in improved safety are demonstrated through an analysis of various records kept by the mines and provincial agencies.   Future trends can now be envisaged, particularly in relation to deep mining. Some experimental work which could have practical applications, is described.

Compositional geostatistics is an approach developed to ensure that the constant sum constraint induced by geochemical iron ore analysis is respected in estimation and simulation. Jack-knifing and cross-validation were used within this framework to compare the results from ordinary cokriging of the additive log ratio (alr) variables with those from conventional ordinary cokriging. Two methods were used to back-transform the alr estimates: the crude additive generalised logistic back transformation and numerical integration via Gauss-Hermite quadrature. Previous work on a blasthole data set from a Yilgarn iron ore mine showed promising results, with the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method returning results comparable to ordinary cokriging from the point of view of bias, but superior in that the constant sum constraint imposed by geochemistry of the data was honoured. Other practitioners have noted that the linear interpolation of non-linear log ratio transformations will result in biased results, and that this bias can be masked in a (grade control) setting where the spatial density is high. To test this assertion, the methodology has been extended to successively lower spatial density data sets. Iron ore mineralisation in the Paraburdoo environs is known to extend almost continuously over a strike length of 55 kilometres. Six formations of the Mount Bruce Supergroup con- tain high grade mineralisation in varying degrees of importance. Ore is currently being mined from the Joffre and Dales Gorge Members of the Brockman Iron Formation, with smaller, less significant amounts, occasionally taken from the lowermost units of the Weeli Wolli Formation and the upper parts of the Mount McRae Shale. Regional mapping has demonstrated the existance locally of a major unconformity at the base of the Wyloo Group sediments out- cropping south of the minesite. The basal con- glomerates at the unconformity are sometimes mineralised at Paraburdoo. A supergene enrich- ment process controlled by structure, strati- graphy and topography is the only one which can satisfactorily explain the disposition and chemistry of the Paraburdoo iron orebodies.

The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite,Fel_oS has been studied experimentally in the temperaturerange 200 DC to 760 DC. Nickel from both aqueous solutionsand salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphide latticewith ,an accompanying rel~ase of iron into the solution ormelt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion intothe sulphide lattice have been followed ,by opticalmicroscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser.Some geological consequences of this phenomenonaffecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associatedwith nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

SINCE 1900, five underground fires of consequence have beenrecorded in the Broken Hill mines. These occurred at the Junction(1906), Proprietary (1906 and 1916), Block 14 (1906), and Centralmines (1923). All have been extinguished, but at an enormouscost; e.g., in the eleven months following on the 1923 Central mine fire the sum of £187,123 was expended in fire-fighting operations.To this series may be added others, as the South (1925) and British mine (1918) fires, which were extinguished before serious damage had resulted. All, however, have occurred within a period of 28 years, and in a district where spontaneous combustion, a prolific source of fire in the U.S.A., has been practically nonexistent. Bauxitic laterite of variable thickness and grade is best developed in the Darling Range but covers a large part of the southwest corner of Western Australia. Its limits are defined by the rainfall isohyets to which jarrah forest is confined. Within this broad belt there is an increase in arable land southwards concomitant with a thinning of the laterite layer.Bauxite quality and perhaps thickness as well are dependent on the type of source rock, and are influenced by topography. Economic deposits occur over a vertical range in altitude of about 1200 ft. Some bauxite orebodies appear shoot-like in character, and analogy is suggested with the ore shoots of syngenetic metalliferous deposits.The alumina is in the form of gibbsite enabling low temperature digestion in treatment.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of bauxite in Australia has been known for many years it is only recently that exploitation has commenced of the two most important deposits, strangely at almost diagonally opposite tips of the continent (Fig. 1).Recognition of the importance of the bauxite in the southwest corner came about initially through the efforts of Western Aluminium N.L. which, with some outside financial help, tackled the early exploration with commendable foresight and courage. The paper deals with the taking of soundings in connection with coal mining operations under part of the Pacific Ocean adjoining John Darling Colliery.INTRODUCTIONIn the early days of mining in the Newcastle District there did not appear to be any definite law specifying the limits to which mine workings, other than certain borings, could extend under tidal waters.As time went on, a figure of 120 ft. was fixed as the minimum thickness of strata between the roof of the seam and the sea bottom; beyond this mining operations are disallowed. Slag fuming (SF) is a critical process for recycling zinc-containing slags, but the corrosive nature of molten slag poses challenges to the reactor durability. The freeze-lining (FL) technique offers a solution by forming a protective layer on the reactor wall. It requires intensive cooling using watercooled jackets, which can stabilise the FL while compromising the energy efficiency of the process. This study presents a computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-based model to optimise the SF process by considering FL formation and its impact on heat transfer and reactor wall temperature. A volumeof- fluid (VOF) model is coupled with a mixture continuum (MC) solidification model to capture the intricate multiphase flow dynamics within the SF furnace. Two FL types are considered: FL solidifying on the reactor wall in the slag bath region; and FL solidifying on the reactor wall in the freeboard region. The FL of the first type forms when the slag temperature drops below liquidus temperature. The FL of the second type only forms when a splash-induced slag droplet collides with the freeboard wall and solidifies. A series of splashing events are necessary to coat the freeboard wall. The simulation was run until a global energy balance was reached. This means that the heat losses from the water-cooled jacket, bottom wall, outlet and fuming balance the heat gains from the hot gas injected through the submerged plasma torches. The increase in FL thickness, due to its low thermal conductivity, reduces the heat losses through the reactor walls. The calculated FL thickness and heat fluxes were in good agreement with industrial data, validating the model’s credibility. The simulation results provided valuable insights into the fuming process, including slag bath temperature evolution, slag splashing dynamics, FL formation patterns, local heat fluxes through the reactor wall and overall energy balance. These findings can inform process optimisation strategies to enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of SF operations. The authors have built a prior version of the model framework and applied it to simulate FL formation in an electric smelting furnace (ESF). The results from both the ESF and the current SF highlight the applicability of such model framework to a range of industrial processes involving FL formation. This model framework can ultimately contribute to more energy-efficient and sustainable industrial operations.

Two industrial case studies in which detailed investigation of the flow behaviour of mineral slurries is used to assess the feasibility of pipeline solid transport are described. The first example deals with the pumping of highly concentrated bauxite tailings to disposal, while the second exam- ple examines the possibility of transporting high-density Victorian brown coal slurries which previously has been thought as uneconomical. It is demonstrated that these typical solid handling problems can be solved by a good understanding of the rheology of suspensions.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. Two suites of dusts (waste-heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) collected in 1976 and 1980 from the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter were subjected to chemical and XRD analysis and were examined by SEM and optical microscopy. The spherical to sub-spherical particles contained oxide and glassy phases with small amounts of sulfide. XRD showed that the major phase was a mixed Ni-Fe oxide spinel with some hematite. These phases compared well with those predicted by thermodynamics. The particle size distributions showed that in the 1976 and 1980 suites 20 per cent by weight was respectively coarser than 60 and 115/lm (boiler dusts) and 40 and 30/lm (precipitator dusts). Maximum particle sizes estimated from sedimentation chamber theory were found to be in reasonable agreement with the maximum sizes found in the dusts.

Estimation of the semi-variogram is basic to the geostatistical processing of data. The most widely used arithmetic average estimator is here employed with various sampling patterns to calculate experimental semi-variograms in a deposit which is simulated to have a defined semi-variogram. Upper Cretaceous and Eocene coal measures of the Ohai Coalfield are stratigraphically complex, and coal seam geometry and quality are influenced by washouts and partings resulting from accumulation in a fluvially active environment. Mining efficiency is influenced by these seam discontinuities, which are difficult to predict in the absence of refined paleoenvironmental models of peat accumulation. Petrographic variations between the Upper Cretaceous and Eocene coals indicate differences in the environments of peat accumulation. Seams in the Upper Cretaceous Morley Coal Measures accumulated autochthonously (in situ) in predominantly forest swamps with a high water table. These swamps were occasionally subject to brief floods. No significant changes in swamp vegetation, as indicated by petrography, have been detected between seams. In contrast, the greater content of mineral matter and maceral detritus within the Eocene Beaumont Coal Measure seams indicates hypautochthonous (locally transported) peat accumulation under more frequently flooded conditions. A precursor forest-moor is again indicated but the greater resin content of these coals compared with the Upper Cretaceous examples may suggest a greater contribution from conifers. Integration of coal petrography with investigation of other seam characteristics and coal measure sedimentology is expected to result in a detailed understanding of original depositional controls on peat accumulation. Paleoenvironmental models derived in this way should facilitate prediction of seam geometry, roof and floor conditions, and variations in coal quality, with obvious benefits to exploration and mine development.

The general principles of technical due diligence best practice that are involved in assessing a mineral property in the early stages of its development are described and a bibliography of relevant papers is attached. The issues specific to the evaluation of gold deposits are highlighted. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's (The AusIMM) initiatives in this area, dealing with the proper public reporting of Reserve/Resource information (JORC Code) and property assessment/valuation (VALMIN Code), will be used as a framework against which the illegal tampering with drilling samples to artificially boost their gold content (salting) from the Busang gold deposit (Kalimantan, Indonesia), owned by Bre-X Minerals Limited (Calgary, Canada), will be reviewed. While the Busang saga was based upon fraud, through salting the samples, the general lessons to learn from such a scam are worth documenting. In Australia, most of those working in the mineral industry belong to long established professional institutes and consultant associations (eg The AusIMM or Mineral Industry Consultants Association [MICA]) that require their members to work within their technical limits and to comply with best practice guidelines, or risk being judged and found wanting by their peers in the context of strong Ethics Codes. There is also a strong interface between such representative professional bodies and the corporate and financial market regulators (ASC/ASX), which closes the monitoring loop. Canada has only now seen the wisdom of having this type of early warning system in place. Fraud and deliberate deception will be always possible, but deception on the enormous scale that occurred at Busang is most unlikely with proper surveillance systems in place and the use of accredited technical professionals. There should have been more hard data available about so big and rich a deposit owned by a C$6Bn company.
