During early 2004, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) began an aggressive exploration and drilling program in the Chichester Range, targeting iron enrichment developed in the Nammuldi Member at the base of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation. The timely recognition by FMG of distinct zones of (hypogene) microplaty hematite (mplH) enrichment overprinted by extensive supergene mineralisation led to an early reappraisal of the geological history of the area and characterisation of the possible structural and stratigraphic controls on mineralisation. Regionally, the Chichester Range dips gently at less than 5¦ to the south, however, detailed mapping shows that this regional limb is overprinted by low amplitude, long wavelength, north/south to northeast/southwest trending folds. The locations of major structures in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, combined with spectral analysis of known mineralisation, allowed extrapolation and prioritisation of exploration target areas. The delineation under cover and understanding of these structures was enhanced by detailed airborne magnetic data. Recognition that supergene mineralisation was associated with a palaeotopography that continued significantly under cover to the south under sediments of the Fortescue River valley led to the discovery of extensive supergene mineralisation together with additional mplH mineralisation. A model for the landscape evolution and preservation of enriched Nammuldi Member was generated in order to help communicate both the complexities involved with targeting drill holes beneath cover and the potential limits to the lateral extents of mineralisation.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors-include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other i changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

Prior to 2001 Yallourn Mine has pumped approximately 1000 Megalitres of water per annum from aquifers beneath the mine floor in order to control aquifer pressures that were thought to have an influence on mine floor and permanent batter stability. In 2001 one of the deep aquifer pumps was shut down for five months in order to measure the aquifer recoveries. Prior to the shutdown a UDEC model was created in order to predict what level of recovery in the aquifer pressures would be critical to mine stability. The shutdown showed that the aquifer levels recovered and stabilised at levels that did not threaten the stability of the mine. The aquifers recovered to levels below the critical levels identified in the UDEC model.

Marketing of mineral products has not yet succumbed to the degree of pre- dictability and exactitude that is fam- iliar to the engineer or metallurgist in pursuing their profession. Whilst the Great Market of the world economy dic- tates circumstances for the sale of min- eral products, there are more than just buyers and sellers in the determination of the revenue received by the producer. For the engineer or metallurgist he will be required to gain an understanding of these participants and of the peculiar languages of the market place. This will be only one of his tasks in learn- ing to communicate with society, as his responsibilities increase as he climbs the ladder of success. There is un- doubtedly a need for better statistical information so that producers and sell- ers can make an appropriate and earlier response to market conditions. There is in addition, a need for more aggressive concern by raw material producers for the development and promotion of better end use of their products. Undoubtedly the marketing of mineral products will be more influenced by the direct involv- ment of government agencies than has been the case in the past. Whilst that 1. Interpreted geologic domains provide the geologic architecture of many current models used to estimate the potential economic resources in mineral deposits. The spatial extent of each domain is usually defined by a three-dimensional wireframe or triangulated surface.The set of geologic wireframes forming part of a resource model might generally be called a spatial interpretation of some set of geologic features coincident with the mineralisation, based primarily on logged and mapped properties of the samples and other exposures of the mineralisation. The interpreted spatial distribution of rock type, alteration and grade of drill hole samples above a particular grade threshold are commonly used criteria in constructing the geologic domain wireframes. Frequently, the grade threshold is closely related to the anticipated economic cut-off grade. The boundaries or spatial limits of different domains are most commonly defined as æhardÆ or æsoftÆ. A æhardÆ boundary usually means no dependent relationship of any kind is defined between the properties of samples inside a particular domain wireframe and those samples outside the wireframe. A æsoftÆ boundary commonly implies that some kind of dependent relationship does prevail between the properties of samples inside and outside the particular wireframe. Many ways are used to describe those relationships, few of which are based on spatial analysis of the continuity of sample attributes across the domain boundaries. In local estimation procedures such as ordinary block kriging, æhardÆ boundaries act as a total barrier to the influence of samples on either side of the boundary depending on the location of the block being estimated. In some instances, æsemi-permeableÆ boundaries are used in which the samples inside a domain wireframe are allowed to influence the estimates outside but not the reverse. This can lead to many undesirable effects in estimates of block grades.This paper discusses the value of this approach to geologic domaining from a viewpoint of model complexity, as well as in relation to the implications for both linear and non-linear estimation methods and contrasts it with alternatives. It also explores some important consequences of using æhardÆ and æsoftÆ geological boundaries with the commonly used modelling methods: excessive smoothing of estimates near domain boundaries and conditionally biased estimates of grade at the global and local scale.

This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes. The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste land form. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using the Daydream embankment at Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG's) Cloudbreak Operations as a case study.

LKAB is a mining company situated in northern Scandinavia, manufacturing blast furnace- and direct-reduction pellets and sinter fines. Pellet development at LKAB comprises testing at laboratory and pilot scale. The LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) is a unique test facility and an important tool in terms of product development and process research. For a better understanding of pellet behaviour in the blast furnace process, LKAB has started to use automated mineralogy for the characterisation and quantification of its iron ore products and pellets. A mineralogical evaluation of iron ore olivine pellets, taken from a test campaign in the EBF, has been performed. The studied materials were samples from excavated pellet layers through the entire EBF at different positions. A large number of iron ore pellets was analysed using a combination of automated mineralogy, using QEMSCAN«, and chemical analysis. Important information about the performance of pellets in the blast furnace process, such as a quantitative description of mineral and iron oxide alterations at different temperatures, Fe-reduction and alkali deposition, was obtained.

This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.

Strip mining offers the advantages of high productivity from both human and capital resources as well as high rates of production. Experience suggests that it will be advantageous to extend strip mining to the maximum pos- sible depth in order to minimize costs and maximize the recovery of the in situ coal reserves. Highwall and spoilheap stability pose significant problems. Deep working in strip mines is likely to produce a change from methods which are based upon the elevation of material followed by dumping, to methods involving elevation and horizontal transport. There is considerable scope for optimizing the types of machines and minimizing the amount of double handling.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan will total approximately 3.3 billion tonnes. Approximately 15 per cent of waste materials contain zones with varying amounts of sulfides and carbon and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has the potential to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulfide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments. Safe storage of reactive shale is the focus of ongoing research. Since the mid-1990s, a number of trials have been undertaken at Mt Whaleback in order to further the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of reactive shale. This paper summarises some of these trials, and discusses key learnings arising from interpretation of results. Ultimately, the learnings from this research will provide the guidelines for successful storage of reactive shale.

Rock cutting excavation technologies and particularly continuous excavation technologies, can offer benefits in the areas of reduced costs, higher revenue and increased safety in a variety of mining situations. Non-explosive rock excavation technologies for example, can deliver significant benefits in the areas of dilution and improved ground support (no overbreak). This paper is an attempt to focus on the development and future of alternative rock breaking technologies and to provide some insights as to why and how we should proceed in this direction. The market size for underground hard rock excavation technologies is examined. A short review of the evolution of various rock excavation technologies in terms of cost and production rate is given and a summary of the state-of-the-art technology is presented. Mechanical excavation technologies (TBM) have very high production rates compared to D&B and the gap is widening, however, they have not been successfully applied to mining applications. Operating costs for mechanical and D&B systems have been dropping over time, however, D&B costs are the lowest. Given the current state of knowledge it appears that with regard to hard rock underground metalliferous mining that R&D efforts should be focussed in the following areas - disc cutter tool development (materials and design; operation; presentation to the rock surface), hybrid cutting systems (consisting of water jets and disc cutters) and development of pressurised hole breakage technologies. It is also possible that two techniques known as the pulsed laser and pulsed water jets may have some potential. The generally agreed specifications for a widely applicable underground hard rock excavating machine are - disc cutter based, a minimum production rate of 100 t/h, be flexible, manoeuvrable and deployable, weight of less than 100 tonnes and be economically competitive with D&B in rocks over 150 MPa UCS. Such a machine would seriously challenge the position of conventional D&B in a wide range applications and provide some of the benefits of mechanisation and automation that the mining industry is pushing so hard for. However, technology developments in the D&B area are not static and hence the target is moving and is increasingly difficult to overtake.

Multi-seam mining under the western portion of Lake Macquarie NSW commenced in 1982. Up to three seams separated by partings ranging from 10 to 30 metres are mined simultaneously by Newcom Collieries. A feature of these workings is the minimal bedrock cover, which ranges from 130 metres down to only 40 metres. "Surface" subsidence control has an over-riding influence on the design of the workings. Subsidence considerations govern both the selection of the mining method and the dimensioning of the workings. To date, workings have been designed in accordance with the "Wardell Guidelines for Mining Under Tidal Waters". These guidelines are tabulated and evaluated in the light of advances in rock mechanics knowledge and local subsidence data collected since the Guidelines were formulated in 1974. The local and regional stability of shallow workings designed according to the Guidelines is evaluated.

Drilling has been accepted as a major exploration tool. However its use in mine planning and development has been overlooked.This need for drillhole data was highlighted during the redevelopment boom of the central Victorian gold mines. During the 1980's numerous old mines were evaluated and successfully drilled to yield mineable parcels of quartz reefs close to existing workings.Invariably the initial decision was always to attempt reopening and rehabilitating existing access. The four case studies described have proceededsufficiently to show that major cost savings would have been made if underground drilling had been used as the main tool in mine planning.Savings not only in expenditure, but in the time required to make key decisions. In two cases the mines would have experienced far earlier expansions in production. In one case the mine would be currently producing rather than awaiting further finance. In the fourth example, the decision to case development would have been much earlier providing capital to other projects.

The authors have used the geotechnical study for design of the South Wall of Mt. Newman Mining's Mt. Whaleback Mine to illustrate how geotechnical studies can be economically justified. This is achieved by relating the savings resulting from increased ore recovery and prevention of failure to the cost of the study. An outline of the geotechnical study is provided in the paper, including a brief description of the innovative methods used to investigate geological structure of the mine and descriptions of the methods of slope reinforcement adopted.

BackgroundIn March 1990 Pasminco resolved to replace and increase the capacity of the underground pumping system at the Southern Operations, Broken Hill. The existing pump station was built 23 years ago while the rising main had been in service for 38 years and was subject to frequent failure.The old system was a conventional slurry/clear water separation and multi-stage pumping system. It was inadequate in the following areas:ò insufficient capacity to handle current and expected future flows;ò unable to consistently dewater lower production areas; ò pumping capacity restricted sandfilling rates;ò dirty water dams had insufficient settling capacity and were difficult to de-sludge;ò the operating costs of dewatering were high; ò it was labour intensive; andò it did not offer enough protection to the 25 level loading station.

In-situ experiments were performed in a tunnel built in loess soil with the displace- ment components of the tunnel lining and the acceleration components of the tracks measured during the passing of trains. The measured parameters were then studied by the spectral method. As a result, the dynamic forces of trains was simulated numerically and a deter- ministic dynamic nonlinear analysis was carried out by means of finite element method. The results obtained by two different approaches were in fair coincidence. Results of the study indicate, that the low and medium frequency components of the dynamic train loading would be crucial for the dynamic responses of the tunnel lining and surrounding mass, and their effects would increase with the speed of passing trains within a certain range.

The Kanowna Belle deposit was discovered in 1990 following encouraging assays from soil sampling and RAB drilling. At the end of September 1993, diamond drilling had been completed to a vertical depth of 1,000 metres and a resource of 22 million tonnes grading 5.73 grams of gold per tonne containing a million ounces of gold had been defined. The deposit remains open at depth. Pre-production mining for the open pit began in November 1992, construction of the oxide treatment plant began in January 1993 and the first gold was poured in September 1993. Sulphide ore roasting commenced in December 1994 and the underground mine development commenced in July 1995. The Kanowna Belle project is owned by the Golden Valley Joint Venture (GVJV), an unincorporated joint venture with equal shareholdings between North Gold (W.A.) Ltd and Delta Gold N.L. North Gold are the managers of the development and operations and Delta Gold are the managers of exploration throughout the GVJV tenements.

Mechanical models are established in accordance with the degree of mining on both sides of the coal pillar, and formulae were derived which calculated the superposition stress distribution and the width of the plastic region. The stability of the coal pillar was analysed and a reasonable size of coal pillar determined, in accordance with the elastic region rate. Further practical examples for the stability of the coal pillar are calculated and simulated.

Traditional techniques for extracting pillars in thick underground coal seams in India are reviewed. Problems encountered are principally control of roof strata and low recovery. Recently developed mechanized methods and projected newer techniques are discussed.
